Really good set, very accurate to the real thing apart from the size. However that’s not to say it’s small, as lego goes it’s a very good set for the price.

As something of an Apollo geek, I’ve had my eye on this kit since it’s first release. To celebrate getting to write about the space race for an astronomy magazine, I decided to finally treat myself.
I’ve not built anything from Lego in about 40 years, but love watching the amazing creations built by contestants on the various Lego Masters shows. As ever, the instructions are clear and easy to read. As others have noted, you do end up making multiple of the same or similar sub-assemblies, so it isn’t the most varied build, but if you’re more interested in the finished model, that’s not a huge issue. Everything is there to illustrate an Apollo lunar mission from lift off to splash down. The one slight inaccuracy; the third stage detaches as one piece, rather than the booster then interstate, but that is a very minor quibble.
As the Saturn V takes up a lot of room when displayed horizontally on the included stands, I added a compatible stand to hold the rocket vertically.
Highly recommended for any Apollo fan.

As an adult this ticked all the boxes for me, best Xmas present for years!
An excellent model of the Saturn 5 and easily worth putting on show somewhere in the home if you have the space.
A nostalgic model for those of us that remember those early space flights and trips to the Moon…

We have loads of Lego sets in our household but this is my absolute favourite.
Although the build is quite repetitive and predictable, it is still enjoyable. The finished product is fantastic, impressive size at great value. Highly recommend this set!

Good experience and techniques to achieve the angles in the build. My 14 year old lego fan built this on his own. He had it built over several days, but his estimate is 3-4 hours build time with 12 bags (approx) in the box. Looks good can be displayed stood up and is tall or led down on the included stand.
With regards to sturdiness, when led down, the nose cone section can srop off due to the weight of the built, wike us up one nigh

Note this model is aimed at 14+ age and not really suitable for someone younger without supervision.
If you have not done one of these major Lego models before, take a few moments to look at the instructions to first familiarise yourself with the iconography. It is straight forward but worth taking the time. After that you should have no problems.
It is pleasing to see how the model builds from the inside out and gradually reveals itself in full glory.
Be aware the completed Saturn V is over a metre tall, so think about where you want to finally display it! (Though you can always break it back down and build it again at another time!).
Have to build the Shuttle and Hubble next!

Very good model you must be careful though the orientation of some seemingly insignificant parts at the start have to be right or some parts later on in the build won’t attach and you could end up having to take some of it apart again. Follow the instructions very carefully.

If you love LEGO and like me getting back into it at…cough…50 something and love Space stuff then this is for you. Yes it’s not cheap and Yes you can get a replica of it from a certain country for 1/4 the price (without official box) but you have to remember the LEGO engineers and designers who sat down and thought “How can we do this”? and then figured it out.
You can see their thinking when building this and you complete a section and go “What? Who thought of that”?
This isn’t a 3 foot 3 inch high tube of bricks. It’s a solid multi stage build that I loved every minute of so much I’ve ordered the Space Shuttle from LEGO (haven’t told wifey yet…yikes).
Take your time, pour a drink maybe and enjoy it.

I wanted an interesting object for my desktop. This proved to be perfect.

I bought this to wall mount and display because I quite like the Apollo program. It took about 3 days to build because I only spent a few hours each night after work with my dad but it was a repetitive but enjoyable build. As an Apollo geek, I suppose I was always going to like this, so maybe this is a biased review. But I thought this kit was superb. My family of 4 built it as a ‘team’, which maybe mitigated some of the ‘repeat 4 times’ boredom other people have complained about. The result is a thing of beauty. For added geek value, I recommend the Saturn V “Haynes Manual” as well, which has more information than you could possibly imagine about how they designed and built it – I found it a very interesting companion to the Lego build.

  21. AlyssaGirardin says:

     United Kingdom

I thoroughly enjoyed building this. But I have to question the apparent complexity of the internal structure which you don’t actually see once built. The designers used several small bricks where just one larger one would suffice – maybe I’ve missed the point. Maybe they just wanted to pad the number of bricks to 1969 as a nod to the year Apollo II went to the moon. The major design flaw to my thinking is that the black and white pattern on the upper part of Stage 2 is regular, whereas on the real thing it’s an irregular pattern allowing ground observers to determine the rotational attitude of the launch vehicle during take-off and flight. But, given the restrictions of Lego bricks, this is an excellent model.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI figured that by combining two of my loves, which are Lego and NASA, there would be no going wrong with this and I was right. Makes a fantastic “statement piece” and is a seriously impressive size as well. The designers have done such a great job that, from a few paces back, it gets hard to tell that it’s actually Lego and not just a model.

The packaging and booklet are equally nicely thought out and it was so satisfying to build. Also has some really lovely bonus features like the mini lunar module (that can fit inside the 3rd stage) and an excellent little command module in post-splashdown configuration.

Only real problem with this purchase is that it has ignited a bit of a need in me for more NASA Lego and I’ve ended up buying the larger Lunar Module and the ISS as well. Plus I had to get a decent sized display case to put it in… Could get to be an expensive habit!

This was my first Lego model I have put together and I was surprised how good the end result looked. I did have to backtrack at one point in assembling the stage two as I had misread the diagram at one point. It is a bit pricy as seems to be the case with Lego but it locks together very well as a finished model.

This was probably the best building experience I’ve had from a lego set. The obvious is its a massive really cool looking set, but the best bits for me was that it didn’t include stickers all the pieces where printed so there’s no wonky looking bits. I’m also really thankful for the minimal technic pieces, it’s not that I don’t enjoy technic but when it’s a large build with lots of technic it can be a pain but this set was really easy to build. I built mine in about 3 and a half hours and would really recommend as it looks great on display

This is a very well made model. The instructions are clear and you build the rocket in 12 sections each with a separate bag of Lego. A bit pricey but if you are enthusiastic about space travel and the moon landings then a model of the Saturn V is a very nice thing to make and have. Included is a small lunar site model and a spashdown model.

This thing is amazing. First, it weighs a ton, second, it’s huge, third, and my only real bugbear is that sometimes the instructions are a little vague and you have to pay super close attention to the orientation of the pieces you are attaching to each other (even then I sometimes had to dig up a Youtube tutorial to see what they were doing).

It took about four days doing a bit at a time. Now if only I had the money/space for the Discovery Shuttle.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have made a few of these over the years; all of them being airfix. The revell version has both pros and cons. The main sections do not pair together as well as the airfix version and will require more work to get rid of the seam but on the whole its a very nice model. The transfers are better and less prone to breaking up. The addition of a base is a very nice touch that grounds everything beautifully.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis Lego Saturn Rocket kit is a significant size and to reflect its vintage it has 1969 parts – also the year the rocket delivered the Apollo Lunar Lander to the surface of the moon. In the box, you also get three nano astronaut figures, a splashdown capsule and a US flag plus horizontal stands.

What I like about the Lego Ideas series is that, uniquely, the logos and decals are printed onto the bricks – no stick-on decals here. Having seen an original Saturn Rocket, the scale of this model does justice to it and features plenty of detail. The build also contains a lot of internal detail and the finished rocket is truly impressive. If I had a criticism it’s that some parts of the build are a bit repetitive but overall this is, without doubt, one of Lego’s finest kits and represents good value too.

The Saturn V rocket, which took the astronaut the moon, is an amazing human achievement. The Lego model at just over a metre tall is a great build to consider and reflect on that achievement. Built to the same scale as the Lego international space station it gives a real insight into the size of the rocket, as does the size of the command module compared to the booster rockets needed to achieve space flight. If you’ve not been lucky enough to visit Cape Canaveral then this will give you a small insight into the scale of the project.

Absolute Kaufempfehlung!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThis is a decent Lego build for children and adults alike. It wasn’t too challenging – so accessible to most people I’d say. I enjoyed how the kit came in 12 different bags which allowed you to pace yourself without fearing that you might accidentally loose a piece.

I also enjoyed that the different sections were able to come apart just like the stages of the actual rocket. Finally, I liked the small custom Astronauts, and the details on the Moon Lander and Command Module.

One very small complaint. One piece was missing (I suspect that another piece of equal weight was included in the pack by mistake). This meant that I was unable to connect a part of the exterior properly. This was a first for me (with decades of Lego experience) and I made sure I opened the bag and decanted the contents properly. However after rechecking everything (and the floor) I went on the Lego Website who then sent me out a replacement piece.

All in all, very fun and I would definitely recommend

As all lego usually is, high quality but expensive and overpriced. Amazon sell at the same price as the Lego online store and I haven’t found this cheaper (new) elsewhere. However, the price is my only gripe. It comes with a really nice glossy booklet which explains all about the Apollo programme, the Saturn V rocket, the mission to land on the Moon, and the fan designers who came up with it. I was able to use this to educate my 6yr old, which was a catalyst for excitement when they helped to build it. The instructions are thorough enough for children though I reccommend supervision as there are some symetrical diffrences occasionally.

The rocket itself is sturdy enough though should be treated as a model, I don’t think it would last long as a toy. It’s size is impressive and inners were complex enough for an adult to enjoy building. The display stands are simple but look great in adding to the showpiece. There is also the landing module and command module as additions included.

Overall a great model, if your a lego fan, or space geek its worth the cost. If you just think it’s cool and you don’t mind the price then go for it. There’s little to be dissapointed about, it’s just expensive.

    Pricey but great model.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis reissued Lego set is perhaps one of the greatest sets Lego has designed and made available for release.

Obviously based on the original Saturn V rocket – it very cleverly uses 1969 bricks in order to build, the same number as the first year man stepped onto the moon.

It is impressively large, standing over a metre tall, and it can be displayed in a vertical, or horizontal (with included Lego stands). The use of to scale micro figures also gives a sense of how massive the actual rocket really was!

I absolutely loved this build, and found it incredibly interesting as some rather odd techniques were used to make the cylindrical shape. What was also nice was the distinct lack of stickers – and the actual printed bricks!

The rocket itself ‘splits’ into its separate launch stages, so it can be displayed as 5 individual models (3 stages of the rocket, lunar lander & returned capsule). This can prove as an educational tool as well – which the manual itself provides, including a nice 2 page spread highlighting Saturn V’s launch procedures and what happens in order for it to reach the moon.

Perhaps my favourite set, and I’m so glad that it was reissued. If you are a fan of Lego this set deserves to be in your collection! If you are a fan of space as well – this could possibly be the crown jewel in your collection.

One small step for man, lead to the greatest Lego set!

This thing really is a meter tall. It’s a bit tricky in parts so definitely one for older kids but it is an absolutely awesome build and final result. One of, if not the best, Lego sets we have and we have a few!!!

A lovely model to make and looks great. Only pity is that much of the work is unseen in the final model.
Best to shop around for best price.

his was fun to build but once assembled i found that it is very easily broken when you move it about. apart from this i was really pleased with the value for money that this set gave me.

Great Lego rocket both my grandchildren are in the process of building it They wanted a Lego space rocket that was more complicated so they love this they are aged 12 and 15 Although have to say this was in my opinion overpriced but then it’sLego !

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFantastic way to spend some lockdown time getting back to my childhood by building a great looking and incredibly detailed Saturn V rocket made from Lego. Would highly recommend if you once played with Lego and remember the Apollo programme of the 60’s and 70’s. Just over 1 metre tall (or long) so you will need to think about where you are going to keep it – looks great on its side or stood up on its end.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersWhen I first ordered this I didn’t look at what size it what it was more a case of wow that looks so cool and for such a good price too. Having built it and seen the overall detail that goes into and how easy it goes together. I would highly recommend this build to anyone. If you love the Star Wars Lego but not the price tag that comes with it this is a great set to have. My next challenge is finding somewhere safe for it to go.

    Wow it's so big

Brought this for son (24yrs). He loved it, kept him busy all day. Instructions surprisingly clear (its a whole book) and bits are packaged in separate sections. I was very reluctant to buy this as expensive but actually its brilliant and looks great.

My son was so disappointed when this was retired first time around as we had just missed getting it for his birthday.

He is 9 and it took him about a week to build it so kept him busy for a while.

Great detail and a lot of thought clearly went into the design. Even the parts of the rocket that are covered in panels try to recreate in Lego what would really be there in the real thing. At some point I hope to be allowed to play with it….

This was exceptional. My 12 year old spent chunks of time every day over the Christmas hols until it was built. He already knew a good amount about space travel but this gave him hands on fun. It’s robust and separates into components easily. We watched Apollo 13 once constructed and he took great delight demonstrating the different stages of the mission using it. Not sure where we will display it now!

    Exceptional, robust, educational

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat way to spend a day during lockdown, looks great on its side or stood up on its end. Bit delicate though so don’t pick it up with 1 hand during a conference call or it will fall apart 😉 Very happy with it!

This Lego set is more like a model construction kit when finished. Take your time on the build, and reflect on each stage that you complete of this, the most powerful rocket the world has ever seen. A very rewarding 3 days to build 1,969 pieces into a real educational and collectable Lego Set.

I thoroughly enjoyed constructing this kit and the end result is a fantastic and highly detailed model of the Saturn V. The instructions are simple to follow and the quality of the parts is brilliant. I am absolutely over the moon with this kit!

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersI was thrilled when The Lego Group decided to reissue this set as I was really disappointed that I had come back to Lego too late to get it. It had been on my “want list” for a while and in the end I decided just to take the plunge and get it. I hadn’t realised that it was not just the Saturn V rocket model but also included a small Lunar Landing Craft and the Landing Capsule which are nice little builds in their own right.

The rocket itself uses some build techniques that were new to me and highly effective. I was worried in the early stages as it does look as though the exterior is made from tall curved pieces but these are merely internal structure and the outside uses tiling to create the heat panel effect. ALL of the detailing is via pre-printed bricks so NO stickers which is definitely a bonus.

Build Time on this was extended because I got over confident and did not read the instructions properly so had issues connecting Stage Two in to Stage One and it took me a while to realise I had a 1×4 out of place which was why they would not connect. The connections are really secure and yet allow you to break the rocket apart easily should you wish to display it in stages rather than one huge rocket. When I say huge, I mean HUGE. Yes, the decription tells you it is just under 39.5 inches tall but somehow until you have built it the true size just doesn’t compute. There are 3 “braces” included in the build so you can display it on it’s side – good job too as that is pretty my only option at the moment.

As a final touch can we just talk about the piece count? 1969 – just how cool a detail is that!

    Number Of Pieces: 1969

    Approximate Price Per Piece: 0.06

    Build Time: 5.5 Hours

This is the kind of set ups be building more of… one that triggers the imagination and bring the child out in us. It was fun to build and looks even more amazing on the shelf. My eyes still after building over a year ago glance over at it frequently. Sits next to my Yoda build… another fun build to make.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe LEGO machinery park under the NASA banner is gaining momentum. It looks like a large copy of a lot of fun as well as frustrating panel combinations. The most important thing will be the finish and adding a recoil effect with LED backlighting. The opinion will remain completed.
And here’s full and complete huge rocket who’s now waiting for proper acrylic display and LED. Now we are on the open space sky with huge military project’s landing on the Moon and maybe Mars by Artemis or Blue Origin.

    Saturn V by... LEGO exactly!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought this from Lego themselves so I could get the VIP points which I recommend doing as it can save you money for future purchases. it’s huge about nearly 1.5 meters if you don’t have the room for it don’t bother but if you looking for something to spice up your room or just wow people I can’t recommend this enough and the price is pretty decent compared to other sets with around the same piece count and size.
