I was a bit surprised to find that 2 of these I one room, when grouped, didn’t emit the same colour/intensity/brightness. I do love these lights and remember paying about 90 for my first one about 10yrs ago… It’s still going. Just a bit disappointed that two grouped in the same room don’t match, it’s subtle enough not to be picked up on camera but bugs me. Otherwise 5*

These blow Philips hue out of the water in terms of both brightness and colour saturation and accuracy.
These are Wi-Fi bulbs so no hub required just download the app and follow the instructions.
After a bad experience with smart bulbs that use a hub that left me helpless in total darkness (I am disabled) I wanted a solution where that would never happen again, and I literally stumbled across these when they we first on crowd funding, and have not regretted it once since.
The early ‘offerings’ were just a white and a coloured bulb, which I was grateful for, but they have now expanded to every type of bulb you can think of.
From the time when I bought my first ones (still going strong by the way !) the prices have gone down, yes, they are more expensive that a standard LED bulb but each one has it’s own little hub (if you like) to connect individually to your Wi-Fi so IF a bulb does fail (none of mine ever have) all the others will still continue to work and for me you can’t put a price on that !
Having a hub for anything is literally like putting all your eggs in one basket.. and NOT a good idea.
Next along is the brightness… compared to other smart bulbs these are MUCH, MUCH brighter, in fact I run all mine at 80% brightness and they are still VERY bright, with my original bulbs where the hub failed, even 2 of those bulbs wasn’t anywhere near as bright as one LIFX at 80%… fact.
People don’t realise this because unless they have experienced the brand leader and compared it to LIFX, they think that the brand leader is bright.. check on YouTube for more on comparisons and see for yourself.
Setting up is a doddle and the App is a joy to use and there are no electrical wiring to install or switches to change/wire in as with some other systems.
You just take out your existing bulb, plug in the LIFX bulb, turn the light switch on (I taped mine in the on position until we got used to not using the switch) set it up on the app and that’s it.
If you move just take out the LIFX bulb and put in the original LED bulb, that it.
You don’t need an electrician or an expert, if you can change a light bulb that is all you need to know.
You can then can control the lights, including brightness and colours either via the App or via Alex and/or Google (I have both) and also Apple Homekit.
Now to this specific bulb, my first LIFX bulbs cost me 60 each and they were 1,000 Lumens.
This ‘Nightvision’ bulb is now 1,200 Lumens and works out a LOT cheaper, and to be honest I didn’t mind paying the 60 because of the advantages, but not only is this a colour light with a massive range of colours (1 Trillion – you will not get better and deeper/richer colours with ANY other bulb !), and also a big colour temperature range (1,500 – 9,000K) but it also has built-in ‘Nightvision’ (Infra Red) to help any cameras you have to see better, even if they themselves already have IR, you can set the IR from 0 (default) 25%, 50% and 100% and it is programmable too, you don’t have to use the Nightvision at all if you don’t want to, but it is there if you add a camera in the future.
Although I am in VINE VOICE, I have purchased every single LIFX bulb and as you can tell I am very passionate about them and honestly can’t recommend them enough, they are extremely well made too, the main body is metal (aluminium I think) with a very strong translucent plastic to let the light out.
They have a predicted life of 22.8 years (Based on 3 hrs/day) , I have had mine since November 2016, 5 years now and I have had not had any problems with then whatsoever… as they say “They just work !”
You also have to factor in reliability because of the old saying “Buy Cheap, Buy Twice” and I have fell victim to that a few times now, to know that cheap stuff isn’t worth the bother, you might as well get the best fron the start.
I you give any LIFX bulbs a try, I assure you, like me not only will you be impressed but you will always buy them in the future too.
I am not a salesman, nor do I have any connection whatsoever with the company at all other than a very satisfied customer, but I have spent a lifetime in the electronics industry in various roles, and know a really good thing when I see one !
I would give more than 5 stars if i could but I will have to settle for ‘just’ 5 stars for now !
May Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope it helps someone.
These are great bulbs and we have about 11 around house, colours and whites are exceptional.
But, they are expensive and I do question if the price is worth the extra brightness, colour etc – there are good one’s available for a lot less.
Not always easy to set up and one gripe is after a power cut they all come on – surely they could be set to remember last state.
Brilliant smart bulb with lots of different lighting choices.
The bulb is controlled via an app, that you download. It is very easy to set up and you can add other products from this range and control them separately.
The lighting choices are numerous, and I loved that you can change the ambient lighting to suit the mood. I was also impressed that you can change the intensity of the light and dim it, too.
Overall, super impressed and happy with how easy it was to set up.

This smart light from LIFX is indeed one of the most decent ones I ever tried. It packs 1200lumen brightness, app support, smart features, a spectrum of colour combinations and modes, very high and extremely low brightness level support, and amazing Alexa support.
Setup takes a while but following instructions as written makes the whole process straightforward. Linking it with Alexa is equally easy and just requires finding the compatible skill, naming the light and adding it to a group or room.
It is just amazing how responsive this light is, it is very accurate with Alexa, and asking for any colour is accomplished almost immediately.
The only downside is the price. I think this could be cheaper.
I got this for my living room as it looked like from the listing that it is a very bright light which would be perfect for our living room. I thought it would be cool to be able to control them through our phone and Alexa. We have smart lights almost through out our house but this was the only place where I had hesitated as I didnt want to ruin the look of the chandelier with some bulky smart lights. This looked really sleek so I went ahead and ordered them.
The setup was straight forward and instead of using the recommended Smart Life app, I connected the bulbs to another app which I am already using with my other smart bulbs and they connected without any issues. I already have my wifi setup in such a way that the 2.4ghz band is separate from 5ghz band so it makes the connection pretty straight forward.
Once connected, these lights were automatically detected by Alexa and I was up and running in less than 15 mins. They are not really bright but considering I am using 4 of them, I guess they look OK. They have a soft fade affect when switching off through Wi Fi which is really nice and gives a bit of a premium feel.
Pros
Good design
Easy to setup
Works well with other smart lighting apps
All 4 bulbs can be grouped together to turn on and off together
Color temp. can be adjusted via the app
Cons
The brightness in RGB mode is much lower
Bit expensive
Overall, if you want to avoid changing electrical wiring in your home, this would definitely serve the purpose. Recommended – 4 stars
This bulb is absolutely amazing and has transformed our dining room which is the main middle room in our house so the one that gets the most traffic and use.
We live in a tall Victorian semi-detached house which is narrow but long, with several rooms all in a row. The dining room is the middle “hub” of our downstairs floor, with a dining table and sofas round a fireplace. It’s always been a bit dark in there just with the positioning of the room and a lack of natural light. This lightbulb has really transformed the room both in terms of the ability to make it super-bright versus a more subtle mood light and also with some really amazing funky coloured lighting for when the kids are having a bit of a dance around!
The other amazing feature is of course the Alexa setup, which was straightforward and allows us to control the lighting with our voice. The kids are slightly obsessed with messing with it but I guess that’s part of the fun. The Alexa function allows you to turn the light on and off (great given that it’s the main room that you come into when you enter the house so in the winter months it’s nice to be able to just light the place up as you walk in the door.
You can also select the percentage of brightness, which is really great if you want to just either set the mood a bit more chilled or if you’re in the middle of chilling out and need to suddenly brighten things up (maybe if a spider runs across the floor!).
The range of colours is great and the effect it has on the room is wonderful. Really nice to have on after dinner and the kids are having a bit of a bonkers half an hour or so and want to play around with it.
We don’t have security cameras so I’m afraid we couldn’t test out the infrared setting but from other reviews this sounds like another amazingly helpful setting to make the most of a fancy home security system.
5 stars for a simply excellent product!
I’ve tried lots of smart-bulbs in the past but always settle on the Philips Hue system as (by far) the best but this LIFX Nightvision A60 LED Smart-bulb is the closest runner-up so far. Just used as a multi-colour smart bulb it’s impressively bright with strong saturated colours (maybe better than Hue) and a really good app to control them all. The app seems to be LIFX’s own and not just a reskin of the Smart Life app most companies use. It looks good and if you explore there are lots of clever tweaks like setting a transition time for each colour setting, so the light fades from one to the other as you switch. There’s a useful Day & Dusk setting which allows you to set the bulbs behaviour throughout each 24hr period, with 4 time zones each with their own setting. That lets you use it as a wake-up light (slow-fading up to full brightness) first thing in the morning, switch it off during daylight hours, switch on in the evening and then turn into a dim nightlight though the night. There are also dynamic colour cycles which change colour continuously and you can set and name any of your favourite fixed shades for use with the app or to be triggered by Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple’s HomeKit. The app takes a bit of time to explore and get the hang of but it’s worth the effort.
One feature that’s not that obvious in the app is how to control the invisible InfraRed light this bulb can emit to work with security cameras. There’s a little eye icon that appears on some settings and tapping that opens up the controls for the IR light and lets you choose three different strengths or disable it completely. The IR light comes on automatically when the lights visible brightness is at 5% or less (unless you disable it) so you don’t have to do anything specific to trigger it. Annoyingly the IR setting is not made available to Alexa or the other assistants and so you can’t control it directly from outside the official LIFX app. It’s worth bearing in mind that, unless you tell it otherwise, the bulb will switch on IR light during the day when the bulb is (visibly) switched off. You can use the Day & Dusk setting to avoid this happening, even if you don’t use it to switch the visible light on/off.
Your next question is probably, why would you want to switch InfraRed light off if it’s invisible? Good question, glad you asked. It depends on where you put this bulb, if it’s outside to help an outside security camera work then it’s fine. If you use it indoors then there’s something to be aware of – the InfraRed light it emits will interfere with any device that uses InfraRed, for example the remote control for your TV. When the IR function of this bulb is on it completely knocks out the remote controls for my TV and other devices, they just get drowned out by the amount of (invisible) IR light that’s in the room. So you have to place it carefully and use the app to disable the IR function until you actually need it.
Compared to the Philips Hue system the bulb itself is excellent, bright and colourful, and the app is excellent, but you don’t get any of the fun extra features that Philips Hue has, for example Entertainment Areas that sync with your computer or TV. If you use Razer’s Synapse on your PC then there’s a Chroma add-on for LIFX devices that syncs with your PC but it doesn’t quite match the Hue Sync app. If you don’t need the extra features then it’s a top quality smart bulb with a very useful InfraRed feature, but very pricey. Just don’t panic if your TV remote suddenly stops working.
I will admit that I have tried several colour bulbs to try and make my room feel a lot more exciting and exotic, but sadly other bulbs (on the cheaper end) wouldn’t live up to its potential. LIFX have changed the game and are bringing a bulb which seriously levels up your lighting capabilities for anywhere in your home. Integrated with Alexa, you can voice command Alexa to complete several simple commands such as dimming the lights and turning them on/off. This is great for when you’re lying in bed and don’t want to get up out of that comfy spot.
As for the colour and light quality, it is excellent. The app is pretty easy to setup, where the instructions are easy to follow if you need help along the way. The app did have a concerning low rating on the AppStore, however I have yet to encounter any issues regarding this so fear not :). You can customise colours very easily and even chose your favourite for quick access using the handy palette feature. You can even chose from preset mood settings which will definitely come in handy, whether you want to chill or get your gaming act on.
The colours are very rich and deep, even in mid lighting environments. This is especially evident for the cooler colours such as greens and blues. The white colour can get incredibly bright, I would say as bright as professional studio lighting. I am honestly so impressed with these bulbs and they have been a real game changer for my bedroom. Time to start saving up and get a few more to sync throughout the house. 5 stars!
Thank you for reading my honest review, I hope you found it helpful! 🙂
It’s fantastic the way that you can change the colors of the bulbs and different intensities really easy and simple using Alexa, is working really well, I didn’t expect less for the elevated price.
Looks durable to me and really well made, in fantastic quality, the design is great and is big the light is really powerful.
The infrared light is an extra point if you have a security camera.
The App is working well and is easy and simple to use. This light is great for when you are out from home because you can schedule to change the light and make it look like you are at home.
Is a fantastic bulb that can be a piece of mind at home.
Used as an outside replacement lamp it is ideal. Providing more light than my original tungsten halogen lamp and at a fraction of the energy. There are also lots of colours to play with – cool.
This bulb gets very bright and can be connected to your smart home devices without a hub can choose any colour you can think of the infrared night vision feature for indoor cameras works to some degree but is a bit of a gimmick for most situations as surely if you wanted the best indoor image you’d leave the light on great performing bulb but certainly priced way too high for a single bulb.

I am slightly annoyed with myself that I like this bulb so much, but that is only because I would never usually contemplate spending over 50 on a single bulb, but it seems you get what you pay for…
Firstly this bulb is super bright in the white spectrum as well as in the colours of which there are oodles to choose from. Secondly you can set the bulb to emit Infrared light when it is switched off to help your security cameras cover a larger area. I set up a camera with IR vision in the hallway and gave it a go and the bulb worked really well, you can set it to 0% (default) 25, 50 and 100% although the cameras aperture makes it a little hard to see the difference between the settings you can see a dimming of the cameras own light on the right hand wall showing the bulb is washing it out. Its not a feature I will be using but for those of you lucky enough to be in a position to splash this amount on a bulb will probably have an extensive home security setup and could be a very useful feature.
The quality of the light this bulb emits is on another level to any other smart bulb I’ve tested, the red and blue colours are so rich and bright I felt like I was back at school setting up the lighting for a drama production. Even in the middle of the day they make a sizeable difference to the feel and colour of the room.
This bulb is now set up in a dark hallway with no natural light and it has made such a difference having it on during the day linking the two parts of our house. You can set up routines so it will emit daylight white in the day time and then a warmer white in the evening, and the app had lots of features and was easy to set up. I have so many bulbs on different apps that I tend to do everything through Alexa and this bulb integrated well and has behaved as expected using voice commands.
Overall very impressed and I have done a little video of commanding the bulb with Alexa so you can get an idea of the colours and brightness (although cameras always balance the light so its hard to reflect truly) oh and after rewatching the video there seems a slight flicker on 1% but this is not viewable with the naked eye.
So in summery if you have struggled to find a bulb bright enough or rich enough in the colour spectrum then you have come to the right place and it is genuinely the best I have seen, but your the only one who can decide if you can justify the price tag. If this were not a free sample in exchange for a honest review I’m not sure I could, but now I’ve seen how good it is…
I’m reviewing the LIFX A60 bulb. Mine arrived with the B22 bayonet fitting.
The bulb was very easy to set up. With the LIFX app and an account set up on my phone, I simply plugged the bulb in and followed the instructions on the app. Set up took maybe 4 or 5 minutes, but most of that was just waiting for things to connect – there was relatively little intervention required from me.
I’ve taken a few photos to illustrate the range of colours, but the photos don’t really do the bulb justice. The bulb at full strength produces 1200 lumens of light, which is apparently equivalent to an old-fashioned, incandescent 75W bulb. The bulb produces a near infinite number of colours and the LIFX app is very easy to use. I like the colour wheel on the app which allows all sorts of colours and shades of those colours.
I have tried several different types of smart bulb including the Hue system and other bulbs that are compatible with the Smart Life app. My favourite is actually the LIFX app. To me, the LIFX app seems more versatile than the Hue or Smart Life apps. In particular, I have found it easier to set complex schedules on the LIFX app than on the other apps. For example, I like the bulb to simulate a sunrise in the morning rather than coming on suddenly at full brightness. With the LIFX app, I can set it for the exact number of seconds that I want for it to take to reach full brightness – I haven’t been able to do this with the other apps I’ve tried.
Overall, this is a good bulb, but supported by what I feel is a great app.
This is a lightbulb that currently costs over 50. I really like it, it works great with the LIFX app or through Alexa and doesn’t require any kind of hub – it connects directly to your wifi. But crikey, the price of it.
Setup was easy. I downloaded the LIFX app which found the device straight away and I input the credentials for the Wifi network I use for ‘smart’ devices and it was connected to the interwebs in short order (I don’t allow such devices onto my main network).
Because it is cloud controlled a user account for LIFX is also required. It was quite straightforward – just an email and password – no personal data other than an email address was required. The LIFX account details were also required to use it with Alexa. You don’t get as much control exposed in the Alexa app but it works
The App is not too bad – it seems to have a lot of negative reviews on the play store but so far I have found no major issues with it. Changing colours/brightness levels etc. is easy and it seems to respond fairly quickly to adjustments. Also, there are a bunch of preset themes and animated patterns available in the app. You can also create a custom palette of favourite colours, which is nice.
I was hoping to be able to try out the IR light with my Raspberry Pi camera — but the camera module I have, as it turns out, does not support night-vision. Quite disappointing as this was the main reason I wanted to try this bulb. I will be ordering a new camera module forthwith.
To conclude — this is a good quality product — the range of colours available is vast and setup/control could not be simpler from my experience. I’m not sure >50 for a single lightbulb is a reasonable price, even if it is a very fine lightbulb. I am considered frugal — it is known.
I have a huge collection of smart bulbs, from the high-priced (the VERY well known brand) to the lower end ones that retail for under 20. I have discovered that price is not always the criterior that separates the good from the bad. I have observed the LIFX bulbs for a long time, in fact they were there in the market right at the very start of the smart bulb emergence. However, they are one of the very most expensive bulbs out there, but they have always looked ‘different’ and intriguing. When I was given the opportunity to review one I could not resist.
When you handle a LIFX bulb you know from the start that it’s a quality item, with an eye-catching design. It’s weighty and the plastics/material all look premium (which they should for the cost).
You do not need a ‘bridge’ for this LIFX bulb so that’s a plus point, and the bulb will function with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and SmartThings, and of course the LIFX app.
I consider myself quite well experienced in setting up smart devices… I have over 70 such devices currently; plugs, cameras, bulbs, smart displays, clocks etc. My collection includes a wide range of brands which have different apps and some individual traits. Sometimes it’s frustrating when a smart device seems to be ‘tricky’ to set up, but that certainly happens. The instruction book with the LIFX tells you hardly anything, other than to download and install the LIFX App (and then the app will guide you through). That’s exactly what I did.
The LIFX App was installed and I duly registered an account with it (you just need an email & password… nothing else). All the stages of installation were pretty standard: install app, power on the bulb, select ADD DEVICE in the app, allow the app to access your internet (you will need your network password), then the bulb is recognised and you wait patiently for the app to get everything up and working. For some reason, even though the LIFX bulb was identified during the installation (and I DEFINITELY entered the correct password for my internet WiFi network), it kept telling me that it couldn’t connect to my WiFi. Hmmm.
I have a mesh system that offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to anything requiring it. I must have tried 8 or 9 times and still the same problem. I moved around the house, reset the LIFX bulb (by powering it off and on 5 times, it then flashes colours to let you know it’s ready for setup), used different plug sockets etc. I kept coming up against a message that said if I still could not connect then contact support (usually a disastrous bad-mood evoking suggestion!). I knew I was doing nothing wrong so just kept trying. Then, suddenly Eureka! It successfully linked the bulb to my app and my WiFi. I have no idea why it had taken so many times, performing the same steps… but all I can say is that if you have this type of problem, and if you are sure you are doing all the right things (passwords etc.) just persevere and hopefully you’ll get up and running!
Okay, so that’s dealt with the installation glitch. The LIFX app is quite good and there are many areas and features to investigate. I have to conclude that this LIFX bulb can do pretty much anything you can think of functionally, millions of bright rich colours, scene settings, timer settings, security settings, night-vision with infra-red ‘black light’, voice dimmable, security schedules for when you aren’t at home etc. They have thought of everything!
The quality of the light output is stunning. Really bright and vivid or soft and ambient. The white colour temperatures seem virtually limitless and if you can think of a colour that the bulb can’t do then I wouldn’t believe you! I tried to photgraph the beauty of the light output but I failed rather miserably, sorry.
The infra-red feature is something I haven’t seen on this type of light bulb before and it’s very much a USP for the LIFX in my opinion. Most smart cameras can generate infra-red to illuminate the scene in the dark, but often their ‘reach’ isn’t great. With the LIFX being capable of quite powerful infra-red then it will undoubtedly add far more scope and range which will mean any smart camera will have all the infra-red light it could want and your night-scene will be well lit. This feature alone could be a deciding factor whether to buy the LIFX. I think it’s a great feature.
So, overall I do really like the LIFX. I would not let my setup experience unduly influence you as it did connect (eventually) and you may well not have any issues at all. I say this because the setup procedure is literally so simple, just a couple of steps and the LIFX app kinda does everything for you… so, in principle this bulb should be really easy to install because there’s not much you can actually do wrong.
I am however giving the LIFX 4 Stars because of my installation experience and the price, and because not everyone actually needs such a sophisticated smart bulb. I do love the LIFX bulb modern design a great deal.
A great bulb and very easy to install. There is no bridge needed and you can simply pair to your existing wifi. It can chnage colour and the app is very easy to use and lets you configure groups of bulbs to great a mood. You can even integrate it with the home app which means you get get it to come on at certain times such as when you arrive at home. Quality of the brightness is very good but you really needs a few of these in a large room to make a difference. I have used Philips hue bulbs and they are similar to that. Alexa intergration is great, just added the skill and I was able to use my voice to turn it on and off. The infrared feature is great if you have night vision cameras in the house and it enhances those. Easy to install and great performance.
