Tiny, but powerful yet handy with variable speed control. Collecting dust really well even though it has a tiny pouch – need to connect the wet-vac hose for large project. Love it!!!

Could not wish for more. Used the same model sander for the past 10 years and got good service from it. The new version feels even more sturdy.

This thing is awesome. I had a Bosch orbital sander that I thought was good but this thing is so much better in terms of power and ergonomics. I used to hate sanding projects. I still don’t like sanding but this had made is much better.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI also have had the cheaper single speed version of this ROS for many years. I had replaced the velcro a couple times, and I decided to devote that one to rough sanding duty using a dura-grit pad. I keep sanding discs from 60 to 320 in bulk on hand for all other sanding duties with this ROS.

I like the second handle to add stability. I haven’t really used the variable speed function much for my uses, as I tend to just keep it on the highest speed.

Dust collection honestly isn’t that great. The bag does collect dust, but the channel gets nearly clogged pretty easily. I also have a Dylos DC1100 pro that I use when I’m sanding, and there is a lot of fine dust that get emitted into the air, sometimes up into the range of over 26000 in the .5 micron and greater range. The only ROS that i’ve heard that has good dust collection performance is the festool rotex, but man is it expensive! It also hasn’t been tested with an air quality monitor, so we don’t actually know how well it filters down to the .5 micron range.

Even with the poor fine dust collection, I think it is a great value and workhorse ROS, and I expect to use it for many years. I do keep a spare set of brushes on hand, as that is a wear item, and I want to make sure I can replace them as needed.

Worked like a champ. Appreciated the extra handle. Size is great especially for big jobs. Thought I would go cordless but I have a dust collector hooked up when using anyway. Recommended!!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought this one to replace a Makita BO3021 which had bit the dust after 20 years of service. It had been the family sander for 3 households. We never had any issue whatsoever. I seriously considered a Bosch or Dewalt locally since I was in the middle of a project and didn’t want to wait on shipping. I even had the Dewalt in the checkout line but took it back. I don’t have the strength in my wrists that I used to to and feared being able to handle a palm sander. I decided to spend the extra $10-15 and get another D-handled sander like my old Makita.

I ordered late one night and was surprised to receive my package at noon on the 3rd day. Great work, Amazon! My only regret is that it is about 1/4″ taller than my old sander. Getting into the old case is a tight squeeze but doable.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA good orbital sander is one of the few tools I still prefer to be corded. There are some good cordless sanders available, but they eat through batteries and don’t seem to give consistent performance.

This is one of the best corded orbital sanders in it’s price range. The ergonomics of this orbital sander, the grip and switch placement, extra handle, and weight make it easy to use for extended periods of time. Aside from dust collection, this is about as good as it gets without stepping up to something much more expensive.

One drawback of this sander is the size and acoustics of the dust port. The port is so small that you’ll need to find a specialty adapter to hook up any dust collection hoses, and when you do it will howl and whistle very loudly. Most of the time I just use the dust bag because even with hearing protection the noise is loud. The bag works ok but not as well as some other sanders.

Uses the common 8 hole 5 inch discs. I find the Mirka brand discs available here on Amazon to work very well with this sander.

Unless you are going to spend the big bucks on a Mirca or Festool orbital sander, this one is an excellent choice. Not sure why you would need variable speeds but the adjustable handle and dust collection work great! good holding position and does not leave swirly patterns in surfaces like some of the cheaper models I have used.
Overall a great choice and I will be buying again.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis tool just cut my time to finish a project by 75%, no joke. The ergonomics of this sander are amazing, allowing for a complete finish to my boards without having to come up with work arounds. I was a little intimidated by reading about the variable speed, but as in Makita’s other devices, the speed does not hinder the ability to hold or enhance vibration. I’m truly impressed by this device. I struggled with the price a bit, but I found this without the case, and since I don’t go on job sites, I’m just a hobbyist that keeps his tools on a shelf, buying without the case made it palatable. Now that I see the consistent quality behind this brand, I’m thinking of returning a planer I purchased and just spending the extra money. Great job Makita!!

I have had essentially the same model sander for the past 20 years. It still works but the speed control has recently developed a problem. For that reason I ordered a new one while I debate having the older one repaired. These are just fantastic sanders and the new model has even been improved. You cannot go wrong with Makita.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThis is a great finish sander. Very comfortable to hold and use. Can be held in a couple of ways, from the handle or from the top, with the option of using a second hand on the other handle, which can be positioned anywhere around the body. The only flaw is the ridiculously small dust port. I have 2 different small port dust extraction hoses and neither fits. To fix this I took a piece of 3/4 sch 40 pvc pipe, heated it up, and stretched it over the sander port to make it large enough for my vacuum hose. A simple fix but the sander looses a star because I had to fix it. See picture for the fix. Other than that, I really like the sander.

I think Makita makes the best contractor/serious homeowner saws and sanders. Sure a Festool will out perform this sander, but it will be triple the money. Dust collection is on point, vibration is below average and the finished product is great.

For $10 more than some of the basic random orbit sanders (bosch, dewalt) you get a pistol grip and a second handle, which really are worth it for the ergonomics. Sanding is the worst part of the job, and if you can make it just a little more comfortable, do it.

The Makita BO5041 replaced my 20+ year old Porter-Cable 333. The Makita is very sweet. I like the ability to hold the sander with the handle(s) or like a palm sander. It is much easier to control than the old PC, and has significantly less vibration. My hands don’t feel numb after using it anymore. Also, it sands as well or better than the PC. It’ll take a little getting used to a trigger switch rather than the simple on/off, but that’s not a big deal. It’s hard to judge dust collection, but it may be al little better as well. I really like this new sander.

I love nearly everything about this sander. It’s quiet and the vibration is low. The adjustable handle is very nice for getting into tight corners. I didn’t think I would use the variable speeds, but I found this to be a very useful feature. The only complaint I have is that the trigger comes un-locked sometimes when I grip the handle because of the position of the trigger.

I do a lot of sanding as I rehab furniture. This is my first Makita orbital sander. In the past I have purchased the Bosch and find they do not last that long, the switches seem to go bad. This one is easy to use, except I don’t like the “trigger” on switch. It is located in the handle and you have to keep a tight grip to keep the sander running. For a female hand, this gets hard to do over a certain time period. Other than that, the variable speed setting works well, and it sands just great. Hope that I get many years of use out of this one.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersI’ve been using sanders for about 30 yrs and I have used everything from Bosch and Porter Cable to Rigid with some Harbor Freight ones thrown in just out of curiosity. I bought a Makita 1/4 sheet sander back in the 90s and it lasted well with lots of abuse, but for whatever reason, I went on to other brands. I came across this sander on a fluke and saw all the great reviews so I bought it. WOW! It is an incredible sander. The paddle switch is actually really nice to have and it locks so you dont have to grip the switch on long sanding sessions. I didnt think Id like the side handle, but I love it. Great control and comfort. I don’t know what makes the Makita different than other brands, but it does work better and I can remove material much faster and the built in dust collection is way better than any other. I liked this so much I went on and bought a 2nd one. I run my HF sander a few minutes and it gets hot. I ran this for about 45 minutes and it wasn’t even warm. Excellent built sander.

Typical awesome Makita quality. I have beaten this sander up for the past couple years, and damned near every day. It’s a great sander, variable speed is key for me. But it’s really hard to beat Makita quality and reliability. Main thing is, the oscillation isn’t so radiacal so it won’t make “pigtails” as easily as some other brands I’ve had. Get yourself one and thank me late

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI am replacing a 30 year old Porter Cable Quicksand. I have a whole pile of 5-hole velcro sanding discs and a couple of new extra 5-hole sanding pads. I found I can swap sanding pads. They both have the same 3-hole mounting screws. You need to cut a 29mm hole saw groove through the plastic face and a 1/2″ center hole, both only 1/16′” or so deep. I will use up my supply and then go to the 8-hole system.
The sander works just as fast as my PC, but is quieter and smoother. Overall I am pleasantly surprised.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersQuite nice, though it sometimes spills dust a little easier than I’d expect. That’s about the only flaw. I really like that the disc pad on the bottom is exposed on all sides (meaning I can get to the edge from any angle without it being blocked by a grip). I used this almost exclusively when refinishing my oak stairs; my handy Rigid lasted a long time and did lots of projects but had a dust vent port on one side that made certain angles (in this case on a stairway) a little difficult. On the other hand, that could be looked at as a good thing, the dust port would allow you to use it as a guide. Just a heads up from a woodworker. If this is still running reliably after two years I’ll update to 5 stars.

Golden Review Award: 94 From Our UsersAfter 15 years and about seven different disc/ sheet sanders from Black and Decker and Ridgid (rectangular flat sheet, iron shaped, orbital, 5″, 6″, …) and my 5″ Ridgid starting to give the ghost with some metal grinding noises (after probably 100 hours of sanding in many years) I needed a new 5″ orbital. I was tempted to go with another 5″ Ridgid but it had a few shortcomings: bit bulky to hold, the recessed on off switch, no pistol grip with trigger switch. So I looked at half a dozen other brands at the big box stores. Enter this Makita.
About $20 extra for this Makita, but with a pistol grip with trigger switch and second hand grip!
It is a LOT more comfortable to use than any of my orbital palm sanders. You can use two hands or single hand it, and give your hands a rest with a differing position during extended use as you can switch around using the knob, top and pistol grip.
It is also lighter weight, so easier to use above the shoulders and overhead.
The soft start and stop is fantastic, combined with the trigger switch. No more high speed circular gouge marks as with some other sanders.
It does an average job of sucking dust into its little baggy.
The shop vac port is rather small and the adapter is rubbery but seems to lack a bit of depth to latch on to the shop vac hose better. I have to reseat the hose every few minutes.
In my opinion, it should be redesigned with a bigger diameter tube and deeper connecting shop vac adapter.

In a perfect world it would also have a small vacuum shroud surrounding (akin Ridgid 2611) for a dustless experience when hooked up to a shop vac.

Besides the average dust collection and the so so shop vac connector, I love it and hope to use it for hours and years to come.

I have owned a DeWalt D26453K variable speed random orbital sander for 10+ yrs. It still works, i lost a screw from pad, and can not find a replacement (which says something about their custom service). This sander weighs about the same, height is comparable, but seems to have smoother operation, i.e less vibration on hand. Only two minor complaints…the lock on button releases with very little pressure, if hit accidentally. second, the dust bag, held in place by friction, fell off a handful of times during a days use. Nothing i cant adjust to. Overall happy with the purchase, my second makita tool.

Great tool for all the resurfacing / rust removing applications I have applied it to. If you can manage to attach a dust collection / shop vac to this thing it actually works pretty well to reduce dust mess. I highly recommend using a dust mask while doing any sanding as any small particulates even just wood can be hazardous to your lungs.

So I was shopping around for an orbital sander after I started doing more DIY projects at home. Specifically, this was for a grill cart project and an aquarium stand project. Since I already had the Makita drill and impact drill, I decided to ultimately go with this sander. Of course, the overall ratings mattered as well, so I was happy to see that this sander was well rated.

Since I have gotten, I can say I’m been satisfied with the sander. It’s made sanding so much easier, since in the past I had manually sanded all my projects.

    Pros:
Mechanical sander – no more hand sanding with sheets of sandpaper
Corded – I know this might be a con for some, but I love that fact I don’t have to worry about batteries to swap. Nice, constant flow of power with no worry of weakening batteries.
Front handle – Makes it easier get a grip and sand evenly.
Variable power – Really haven’t used the lower settings, but you can choose your settings.

Con – Weak vacuum. The suction of the vacuum is so so. I don’t think it really does much.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersSweet little sander and an excellent value. We purchased it to prep the wood siding and soffits for a major repainting of our 130-year-old house. With the right grit of paper, the sander had no problem getting through multiple layers of ancient paint where we tore off a porch that didn’t belong. The dust collection system works better than any sander I have used; that’s especially important to us with a house this old. It’s also super easy to change the sanding discs and the pad really grips, unlike some sanders where the sandpaper starts to migrate off the pad a few minutes after you change it.

Great sander. Not too much noise or vibration compared to my Ryobe. But thinking I need a 6″ as well for larger surfaces. Having trouble finding aan adapter that fits my Shop Vac vacuum though.

I needed a sander that could sand through 5 layers of paint since the 1960’s. I tried many sanders do the job but they couldn’t. This sander is a great addition to any diy’er collection.

An exceptionally good performer. I would recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a random orbital sander.

I used to use a quarter-sheet palm sander, and it was a pain. The sheets would fall off every time. Sanding was a dreaded task. With this guy, I actually ENJOY sanding! The discs stay put without any problems, and changing them takes a second. So far, it’s been an awesome tool!

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersI bought a Makita finishing sander (also from Amazon and still available) two years ago when I first started woodworking for fun and it blew my mind. Albeit I bought it because it was cheap, I was comparing it to hand sanding and obviously it did the job quicker and better.

Two years later I knew a bit more about wood working and understood what the “finishing” in “finishing sander” meant. I was able to finish/clean up a surface, but even with a 60 grit sandpaper it was having a hard time chewing away wood from uneven surfaces. I bought this and upon using it my mind was blown again.

It made surface blemishes disappear with minimal time and effort. I was able to smooth out a leg for a stool and level it in no time. I was able to smooth out the two pieces of wood I glued together in no time. I was able to sand away the wood glue and dried wood potty in no time. It’s a bit aggressive and I’ll still be using the finish sander for finish business, but this will be my all-else sander.

Excellent – quite – much better than my old orbital sander — highly recommend

This thing is a beast. I used 100 80 grit sanding disks during a very long weekend of deck sanding and this sander keeps asking for more. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants a very well designed sander that will keep working around the clock.

So far, so good used it for almost strait 12 hours sanding log wall. No problems, kept at max speed whole time.

his is a wonderful product. I bought it without the case and saved a few bucks. So far I’ve only used it to sand between a paint layer and a varnish layer on a table. It is surprisingly quiet, and though not perfect the sawdust bag worked pretty well; the residue was easy to wipe off the table after sanding. Great way to get a professional looking finish on painted or varnished surfaces. Very easy to handle and control. can’t wait to use it again!

Excellent sander for the price. Nice smooth sanding action. Comfortable to use. it is not a Festool, but it is also not $300. The Makita hose for it is, however, not the best hose in the world, but it works. I am therefore giving the package a 4 star. The sander alone would be more of a 5.

Excellent product for the price. The adjustable speed control is definitely a must have. Fantastic build quality.

Not an ounce of dust goes into that dust collector. It sucks up virtually no dust at all, but I expected that so it does not affect my review.

I’ve used a lot of different Electric random orbit Sanders. This one is one of the best that I’ve used. The ergonomics of it are outstanding and the adjustable speed allows you to go from a near polish to a high-speed cutting with a flick of your thumb. Currently, I’m using it to sand the body of a 60’s truck during restoration. Easier to use than an air DA. Very happy with this purchase.

Best small sander I’ve owned. I have a commercial woodworking shop (just a hobby but make furniture cabinets etc.) and have burned up 5 small sanders (Dewalt and Rigid) in the last few years. I like this unit and will try and update this review if it makes a few years

Great sander and good value. Easy for me to use with one hand if needed but may be a bit large for people with smaller hands

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI saw a similarly equipped Bosch for nearly twice the price. The nice thing about this kind of sander verses a simple palm grip is that there is less vibration on the hands so you can work with the sander longer. Palm grip random orbital sanders are cheaper but these also give you a better grip on the sander and you can work for longer periods.

A lot of people prematurely discount these sanders because they eventually have to replace the hook and loop pad. They’re replaceable and you will eventually have to replace the pad no matter what brand of random orbit sander you buy. Please take that into account before leaving a review for any brand. Normal wear and tear will eventually take their toll on the pads.

Makita’s typical high quality. Removable handle well designed and removes easily.
