Great Product. The only problem was that the box did not include the UK style adapter for the plug. Fortunately I had a spare from a different hue product so it didn’t have to be returned.

    No UK adapter included

Very nice. Very simple setup. Nice colour.
Only thing to complain is that the charger makes significant buzzing noise when lights are at full brightness. Very disappointing for such an expensive product. Should be premium quality when premium price.

We have an ambilight TV which came with LED’s all around the back of the screen which dynamically extends the colours of the image on the screen onto the wall behind the TV and really enhances whatever you are watching. I also have a large 4K monitor on my computer and wondered if it would be possible to do the same thing to the monitor. I had some sticky led strips and tried those, but they weren’t that bright and do not change colour synced to the screen. Eventually I chanced upon these Philips light bars, my first thought was: that’s exactly what I am after, my second thought was: they are a bit expensive. However, after reading umpteen reviews and watching several videos about them, I just had to try them. A word of warning: If you buy two LED units, you get that plus a power supply which can power up to three LED bars. If you buy a single led bar (known as an extension), it does not come with a power supply, this is not obvious from the description and Philips do not sell individual power supplies. I also bought a Philips Hue bridge which serves as a hub for lots of hue lights, not just light bars. The bridge must sit next to your router, or at least be connected to it by Ethernet cable. Next, download the Hue app onto your phone and get it to find the bridge, which is a doddle. Next install the power supply and light bars and put the light bars behind your monitor, or you could just sit them on your computer desk, they come with mounts to fit them either vertically or horizontally, I used the supplied 3M sticky pads and stuck them to the back of my monitor. Next download the app for your PC or MAC and run that, at which point you should be able to dynamically sync the light bars to whatever is on your PC’s screen. Within the computer app is a setting to start when your PC starts, without that it would have to be started every time you turn your computer on, with that set it just starts from the word go, when you power up your computer. As I type this waves of colour are washing all over the wall behind my monitor, so I don’t really mind spending a small fortune on this as it makes me happy (the dog likes it too :-).

Yes Hue is expensive but it’s an amazing product..it just works and is very effective. These play bar lights are brilliant, very bright. I have them on 40% and that’s enough light. If I was being criticalI have one design floor and that is the stand. It functions but has not been thought about the cable can still be seen. It should be fed through and disclosed

I could buy LED strips to compensate for what these Hue lights provide, but the problem with strips are that unless they’re hidden enough to diffuse the light only, the strips themselves don’t look attractive.

These Hue bars fix that issue; (and note there’s a white version which I really wish I knew before buying the black ones), these bars are a joy to physically look at, and they provide great ambient lighting of any colour with a decent range. I think out of all LED equipment I’ve bought, besides the nanoleaf which I use as a featured LED light, these are one of my more prouder investments.

Very happy with these lights, nice diffused light with fittings to go behind the tv.

The twin pack has the power adaptor, the single bar does not.

Works without the hue hub and connects to zigbee including amazon echo with bulit in zigbee. The lights can be grouped to work as one, but of course the colour is qcsingle static colour.

The hue hub and hdmi interface required to match the screen image.

    Pro:
    – sehr viele Farben
    – Dimmbar
    – Smart Home steuerbar ber Alexa / Google
    – niedriger Stromverbrauch
    – 2 verschiedene Stnder dabei
    – mit PC Software als Ambilight nutzbar
    – gute Qualitt der Lightbars

    Contra:
    – Normalpreis viel zu hoch (das Set sollte 70-90 maximal kosten)
    – Hue Bridge wird bentigt
    – Fr TV extrem berteuerte Sync Box ntig

This is my second lot as the first had a faulty light which Amazon swapped. I love lights, be it these, fairy lights or LED strips. I’m not a “big lights” fan so as soon as sunset arrives these are on. I just wish the app was a bit nicer to use when you want something more complicated than a static light.

Es war die absolut richtige Entscheidung, das Set um eine dritte Playbar zu ergnzen. Vorher hatte ich immer eine strende Lcke in der Mitte.

I have always used Phillips hue products and never had an issue and the okay bar is no exception.

The play bar comes in a box with multiple attachments to have the bar mounted portrait or vertical or you could just lie the play bar on its side due to the angles edges. In the box you will also find two sticky pads to stick to walls or behind TVs and finally you will get the power supply.

The play bars themselves come in black and are very minimalist and hide easily behind furniture. I have used the landscape holder and placed them to the back of my tv, just ensure when you are using the sticky pads you are certain as there is only one set of these.

The play bars connect quickly with Phillips Hue bridge which is needed if you are going to use these lights, however once connected they work seamlessly with other Phillips hue and work great with Amazon Alexa & Google Home.

I would highly recommend these lights are they are subtle and great to place behind furniture.

The colours themselves are amazing there is endless colours along with shades of colours, the lights can be deemed to almost off or set to maximum brightness which for me is way too bright which shows the quality of the bulbs I guess!

I have bought these and heave them set up to my tv. I’ve ordered the hdmi sync box just waiting for that to be delivered and I’ll be hooking up these lights to it. These were very easy to set up to hue app. I seen videos of people having trouble setting them up but I had no problem at all. I’ll report back when the sync box is connected but so far so good.

  31. Anonymous says:

Arrived today. I purchased the double pack and hub. Works fantastically well. I luckily can run the sync app via my Nvidia shield for movies I have and it’s really cool. Will use it more for static lights.

One day I’ll maybe consider the sync box but at the price for that it’ll be a while I think.

Would definitely buy more lights to add to the set up.

I also saw a previous comment around the sticky tape not being good. I have both my light bars stuck onto the back of my TV and it is very secure.

Video showing two play units connected via hue bridge to wired network in conjunction with pos 55 9002 oled.

If you’re wondering if this works with your Philips ambilight TV, then yes, it does. I got these because I found the main lights a little weak but love the effect.

Set up the bridge, add the hue app and set up your lights for TV off mode and then set up your ambilight and hue in the all settings, ambilight section.

The lights are wireless and there is a slight lag compared to the TV lighting but happy overall. You can configure the lights as normal lamps, when the TV is not in use, using the hue app.

Some people are buying these as just lamps. Which seems kinda nuts. These are not cheap in the slightest but the ability to swing the lights around for a living room carpet party in music mode is too good to miss out on. 😀

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA-MA-ZING!!! I had my eyes on these for a long time but I’d been postponing due to the price. Got a nice deal on Black Friday 137 for 3, so I thought “OK, these do worth 45.66 each to me”. They certainly do! Don’t think about these just as “lamps”. A lot of money goes into software development as well, and that’s what makes these unique!

It took me about 5 minutes to set up 3 of these Play Bars. I had watched some review videos on YouTube before receiving them, which certainly helped me speed up my setup process.

I use them with my 34 inch ultrawide monitor which is connected to my PC. To be honest, I wasn’t impressed in the first couple of minutes because I had VERY high expectations. I thought that they were too bright and the colours weren’t mixing well between the 3 play bars. That turned out to be due to my placement of the lights though! I had placed the right and left ones facing the wall behind the monitor, vertically, and the middle one facing 30 degrees upwards, horizontally. I played around for a few minutes and found the best position for each light in my setup. I repositioned the right and left ones further to the sides, closer to the edge of the monitor, and also had them face outwards about 25 degrees. That’s when they definitely lived up to my expectations! The lights sync and spread so perfectly. You may think that in my video the colour of the one on the right is not very accurate. That’s actually because of the led lights from my PC mixing with the light of the Play Bar, otherwise the Play Bar displays the colours accurately.

Hue Sync app works well on my PC. It uses less than 1% CPU, and around 200MB Memory. For the experience it delivers, I don’t mind that at all.

I’ve never been disappointed by a Philips Hue product. The Play Bars deliver what they promise as well.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGreat addition to the hue set up, we have them behind the sofa and works great for lighting up the wall, using both of them.

They synced straight up to the app no problem and using the bridge it worked as an extension to the ambilight on the tv.

The plug has 3 power points so you could add a 3rd light from the same power point.

Wish the wires were a little longer or if they could be daisy chained together.

Al in all great light very responsive to light changes and bright enough for most set ups.

Great addition to the hue products

These things are great! I love all the Philips Hue range of light – but these are really cool. Full spectrum colour fittings, with awesome control capabilities. Can be used in so many settings and locations. I currently use them as a back light behind my computer screens (helps reduce eye-strain). This allows me to vary the brightness to get it just right. Also allows for some ambient lighting depending on circumstances, with the ability to choose just about any colour you like! 😀

They’re not cheap – but they’re just so good. The physical design allows for a variety of mounting options. Stand them up, lie them down, attach them to the rear of your telly (especially if used in conjunction with the Hue Sync box) and you have a great “bounce it off the walls” lighting option.

They look great – but are best used where you can’t actually see them, just the light they produce.

As I am gradually adding more smart bulbs to my Hue set-up, I thought these would be nice behind the TV. They work really well, adding a nice ambient glow to the corner walls behind the TV, which put’s the TV into relief and makes the screen appear even crisper and brighter than it is. They are very effective (if a bit overpriced), and work well when combined with the Hue Bridge and my Echo Studio.

When I opened the box I was a bit disappointed with the actual size, I was thinking they would be a bit bigger. Another slight issue for me was the size of the plug.. This is due to the type of extension lead I have so with this and another HUE product plugged in I lose 3 sockets. With this aside once placed and set up the light they give off is bright, and adds some much needed vibrant colour to the walls. In all I think these are great, and looking forward to being able to sync with movies. These will not be for everyone but it depends on what you want them for.

I was hoping these would work with a Firestick 4k without the exorbitantly expensive HDMI gizmo, but alas, no. They do work great through a Windows PC with the free software installed, both for games and movies. They could do with being brighter as I have a gap between my PC and the back wall, but with the main lights off they do add a lot of ambience, particularly to games. There is a Linux project to add support to Hyperion which I haven’t tried, but will when I get round to it. Worked for all of a day with the Echo Plus which caused a bit of consternation trying to get connected. Think I completely misunderstood how these things work and ended up biting the bullet and bought a Hue Bridge – which really changed my whole perception. With the Alexa app, it just gives you basic control over lighting, which to be fair, is probably how they’re able to provide an all round consistent set of functions with all the smart devices available today. The Bridge really does offer a great deal of functionality over and above what Alexa gives and I’d highly recommend, if you’re looking at this and don’t own one, you also look at buying that too.

However back to the Hue Play – I personally find them to be pretty bright and vibrant colours that are perhaps closer to the intended colours than many other of these types of lights by other manufacturers. Always find that the reds are somewhat closer to maroon or purple than red – not with the Hue Play, reds actually look red. I also quite like how the lights work in Entertainment mode that provides ambient lighting when you’re watching a film – really nice effect.

Four stars because colour representation is really good and general usability is pretty straightforward if a little restrictive when not used with a Hue Bridge. Alexa still also works with the Bridge and I have the full suite of voice control if somewhat indirectly.

Great little lamps but the DOUBLE pack does not give you two stand-alone units. It feeds both from the same PSU with long cables which is of no use if they are intended to be used different rooms. I guess this configuration saves the extra plug socket from being used if they are placed close together, but ultimately you have far more flexibility in buying the individual units separately. The units themselves are compact, bright and the usual Hue quality.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPurchased these on Prime Day for some extra ambient light in my living room to the side of my television. I originally planned to use the lightstrips on the rear of the television however I’ve seen equal amounts of good and bad executions and was unsure how it would look as my television is quite a flush fit to my wall.

The light these output is fantastic – not only is it capable of great brightness but the colour pallette is extremely vivid and has a great spread. On top of this, the light unit itself is not obtrusive. I don’t like to have the source of the light itself visible, and this really suits me. I currently have a GU10 in a modified wall bracket placed on a sideboard behind an ornament to illuminate the wall there. Whilst this is sufficient, and uses a Hue GU10 colour bulb, the light output does not match the Play at all and I shall be upgrading this in the future.

My only complaints with these lights are as follows:-
    – The units get warm and whilst this is not an issue for me I believe it should be highligted.
    – The supplied cables are annoyingly short, as a result I have had to modify one of the cables and extend it. This is relatively easy as it is a simple two-cable 12v supply and can be carried out by anyone with a basic knowledge of electronics. They also sell the extension cables if you do not have the confidence to carry this out, which would also retain the product warranty.
    – The cables from the light units come from the side of the light (the short edge) – this is not a huge issue but it would be better if they were in the centre of the longer side, or at least had a cable channel to output the cable here if you preferred.

One thing to mention is the ‘additional light pack’ you can purchase. I chose this, and the supplied socket in the starter kit has three outputs on it. The connectors are unique, however I believe you could use a single ‘extension’ if you powered it with your own 12v supply as I believe the receiver is in the unit itself rather than the socket. I can’t confirm this and will attempt to do so when I replace my GU10.

This was my first step into the phillips hue smart lighting range. This is a great well designed product with multiple brackets ect for easy installation. The light is very bright for the size of the light and colours produced are also very bright. The only down side to the light is the price but i managed to pick mine up on prime day. Overall a great smart light. Howevever hue sync only works when linked up to a computer but seems to run quite smoothly on mine despite others saying it doesnt but it is not the strongest feature of theses lights but i am sure phillips will make it better over time.

Love it and great colour range

This is a great addition to the Philips hue lights family, it’s exceptionally easy to pair with the relevant bridge, (brought separately) As you would expect from Philips the build quality is very good and there’s a multitude of colours you can have displayed each lamp can be set to show a different colour or the same. The ambient light isn’t bright enough to read with or to have as the main light in a room; its more of a mood light/accent lighting. The reason it doesn’t get 5 stars all round is due to the cost of the Hue ecosystem, whilst I have personally found them to be the most responsive, brightest and best available that doesn’t negate the exceptional high cost of Philips hue products. Also to have the lights sync with sound then you either need to use a third party app or use it via a laptop/P.C. I feel very few people watch their respective T.Vs this way.
As I say there are ways around this problem and I don’t think it should really put you off purchasing it.

Another great item from Philips hue. Good quality colour, nice small unit.
Loses a star because they’re too expensive really, and also the cable run is a bit short, and the transformers give off a squeal in certain colour/dimmed combinations.

If you can justify the price, these are very nice units.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWith a compact food print and the ability to either surface mount of place on the supplied stands, these lights can accent most places in a room or provide a backlight.

The Hue software for your phone works perfectly with these lights. However the Hue Sync software available for PC and MAC is does have some issues synchronising the lights with the TV. If you are buying this for your TV, I would look at reviews online, as at the moment the lights are not compatible with iTunes or other DRM enabled players.

I’ve been using bulbs from Hive for over two years and they’re great, but the lighting choices are limited. I bought these lights with a Hue Bridge and set up was very easy.

The main difference for me was the vibrancy compared to the Hive coloured bulbs. The Hue Sync application is great too, being able to sync them with games/videos/music is a really neat feature. Note that you can’t hook these up directly to your TV, the Sync application runs on a PC, so that’s a definite negative.

I have far too many Hive bulbs to start again, but in future I’ll definitely be buying Hue instead. Overall it’s four stars because they’re a little bit too pricey, and no direct sync to a TV.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI have fully invested in the Philips Hue lighting system.

My house is full of bulbs, switches and also IR motion sensors.

Having finally decided to put our 55inch TV onto the wall I wanted some lights behind it.

Originally planning on using a Hue lightstrip behind I changed my mind and ordered 3 x Hue plays.

Attaching the plays behind the TV was very easy using the included plastic brackets and 3m tape.

I chose to put the lights to face outwards rather than directly at the wall as this gives a better “spread” of light.

Although each play has its own power lead they can all attach to the 1 included plug which is great as I have limited sockets behind the TV.

Linking everything to the PC/Laptop program is very simple and the lights sync to what’s being displayed on the PC/Laptop screen very well.

Having 3 separate lights behind the TV is much better than 1 lightstrip. 3 lights enable you to change the colour and brightness individually whereas as lightstrip can only ever be one colour/brightness at a time. You can get really creative making different effects.

I have also added a lightstrip to the unit just below the TV (see photos) which adds an even more powerful lighting effect.

What was a completely blank and bland wall is now “full of life”!

They are not cheap but as with all of the Hue system you are investing into a quality system that works.

I would highly recommend these lights.

Perfect addition to our growing Hue family!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWork well but big so can be difficult to fix behind a tv if its a flush finish to the wall (samsung no gap bracket with Q9Fn tv)
Used to use the led strips on a wooden frame behind the tv then i broke it while decorating so i thought i would try these?
Preferred the led strips as they give off more colour all around the tv. Im sure i will get used to the play bars but the short flex does not help either as had to spend more money on the 5m extension leads at 15 a pop! Expensive just to add colour but i have already wasted over 500 on hue so im a sucker! Lol

Ok but depends how you use them?

Golden Review Award: 46 From Our UsersMy lights and bridge turned up today. The hardware is good quality and simple to put together – so much so that you should have it installed in no more than 15 minutes. However, then the fun starts. Put simply, the Philips software is lousy if you want to do anything other than project colours on to a wall. If like me, you want to sync your PC’s display with the lights, the Philips Hue Sync software just isn’t up to the job. Don’t waste your time trying. After a bit of research, I found a different piece of software – HueDynamic – on the Windows store which cost a few pounds but worked instantly. Surprisingly, there’s no lag – the lights project the colour as quickly as the PC can display it and there’s no performance overhead (CPU and RAM) that I can tell.

It’s a shame Philips can’t get their own software working but if you don’t mind using 3rd party software, ultimately this is a better solution than many alternative products such as DreamScreen (I bought that from the US but see Amazon is now selling it. Avoid – it’s temperamental, poorly made and unreliable rubbish for the bargain basement price of 250).

Works brilliantly for pc gaming / watching videos and syncs to music too.
Easy to set up and can get them up and running in a few minutes if you already have the hue light bridge for other lights in the house.
You can have these horizontal or vertical on the stands but i found for the most impact it was best to stick them to the back of the monitor using the included sticky pads.

Highly recommended if you’re after adding something a bit more cosmetic to your gaming.

These lights are really wonderful, you can place them horizontally or vertically and they are really bright and really light up the wall. The best thing about this light is that you can run 3 off one adapter so it only uses up one plug.

These lights are just great. So easy to fix to the back of my TV. Provide really good backlight and can be very bright indeed if you need them to be. I think they’re my best Hue product to date

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersI’ve got a lot of hue products and these are superb, they are very bright on white and all other colours, you can have them lay down or on stands of stuck to the back of you’re television, the reason I chose these was the portability of them,I was going to get the hue led strips but wasn’t to pleased about sticking 60 worth of lights to my TV as once hey have stuck they will remain there and if you take them off they will never stick again do these play lights are absolutely perfect.
The plug can accept 3 of these lights but with them being so bright (on full) and wide spread of the light I will only need 2,one more thing, the leads are not that long but perfect for behind the TV.

Golden Review Award: 64 From Our UsersAwesome lights… Bright, discreet, easy to setup on hue system. Looses a star as it wasn’t obvious in the description that you need to connect a computer to the tv in order to sync the lights with a movie. Other than that minor thing these lights are awesome!

Great lights. Research what you’re buying

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersHave a number of Hue lamps already. Set up was simple via hue app. After that I used the apple Home app to control them. They are certainly bright enough, and paint the wall behind the TV beautifully. They add more class to the already impressive hue effect. Haven’t used with hue sync yet so can’t comment on that.

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersFirst thing I noticed was how bright these are compared to the (already bright enough) Hue Go. Pictures show comparison prior to placing behind my monitor and installed behind monitor with a test pic. Seconds to mount onto the vertical stands (box also contained two small screws, tool, horizontal and vertical mounts, stickers for direct mounting on back of monitor if preferred…).

Easy to add lights with the Hue app as always, added to room and Entertainment area (along with an existing, looped, Hue LightStrip behind monitor for now). Colours really pop during games and movies, very responsive and immersive!). Can see myself ordering more of these to add to growing collection… you know how it is 🙂 Recommended!

    Bright, responsive, compact colour!
