My wife loves cooking and our Turkish cuisine is famous but this cooker (it is more than a fryer) brought so much to our kitchen. Fast, healthy and tasty!
This airfryer is a great product and absolutely brilliant. It reduces cooking time and the food is beautfully prepared and tastes delicious. It is honestly the best product we have bought in a long time. With an initial issue, the Philips customer service desk was really good to help us sort it out. The online app is a real bonus. Well worth the money.
If anyone is on the fence because of the price and who has bought a airfryer in the past and it hasn’t been that great. Forget the other ones you’ve used. This is amazing.
Cooks beautifully and the food tastes so nice, easy to clean and setting the timer is so easy too.
Really pleased and things are improving all the time as I familiarize myself with this new way of cooking
Works like a dream – food tastes so much bette
Excellent product. I don’t use oil at all and the taste of the food is great. Easy to clean and goes in the dishwasher. I like the display, looks modern and sleek.
easy to clean, healthier food prepared quicker food preparation and less energy used when using in comparison to oven. We learnt to buy the high quality food for cooking and frying and think carefully about nutrition content.
If you are curious about air-frying, and wonder if it’s worth it (like I was).
Then be assured it is, friends and family comment on the taste.
Much better than an oven or frying pan, and this Philips unit is undoubtedly worth the money.
5* all around from results to the quality of this unit itself.
Highly, highly recommended.
You get what you pay for and this product doesn’t disappoint.
I bought this to help save on electricity, no heating the oven up. I have to say I’m impressed by how moist the food is inside when cooked. Food seems to cook more quickly and there are attachments to buy that increase the range of foods that can be cooked in it.
I’ve found that food does need turning to be evenly browned. The way the fat is channelled in the bottom works well and it is easy enough to clean. You can cook at 200C but I find that I get a haze in the kitchen and the fire alarms go off but 185C is what I use for everything now and it works for me.
Very useful, I like my Philips air fryer the French fry is really delicious and you can make very quick you can make pizza tost.10 out of 10
Makes nice and crispy chips now! I hardly use the oven now. Love i
Love the way it separates fat but the food remains tasty! So easy to use, child friendly too, the children use it with minimal supervision. Love this purchase
The best airfryer I have had and I have had a few., easy to clean and cooks well.
Extremely versatile and easy to clean and a much lower carbon footprint.
Highly recommend getting one of these,haven’t used another brand so Couldn’t compare. But this is great for a family of 5.mostly used for chips as there is no smell at all. And cooks alot better than oven chips in half the time.cooks lovely crispy chicken, even done a full breakfast. Still haven’t cooked alot of recipes which come on the free app.But am sure they’d be great.
Very good apart from the high price compared to rivals in UK market. This is our second machine of exact model. No complains.
This has been one of the best buys I have made. I haven’t used my oven since purchasing this as can do most things in the air frye
Was looking for a product that produces crisper food than the convection oven. This product delivered.
Tested frozen chips and spring rolls. Chips with no oil took about 15 minutes and fresh spring rolls lightly coated with oil done in 9 minutes. Both turned out nice and crispy.
Tried steak and chicken. Temperatures above 180 will cause a large amount of white smoke to expel from the exhaust. Recommend low temperature initially and high at the end to crisp.
4 parts can be taken out to be washed. Relatively easy to clean. Simple wipe down of the heating element required after oily food.
Overall, fantastic product. If considering, make sure you have a well ventilated room or canopy.
Love this air fryer. Holds so much more than my previous air fryer. Saves me so much time cooking lunch for the kids.
Arrived on time and well packaged…very pleased so far…only one minor niggle…the plastic lid on the top of it vibrates alot in use…if you press it with your finger it stops vibrating and only the fan can be heard….otherwise all ok..
Excellent in every way. I read plenty of reviews, not just on Amazon and decided to invest in this one. Extremely happy I did! It gets used everyday, easy to clean & operate. Superior quality, I highly recommend this 5*
Heats frozen food the best. Better than any oven. No preheating needed
Fantastic product.wife uses it and seems delighted with it.
Absolutely great staff my wife and I we love it very easy to use
I brought this XXL frier for two years now, use it almost 2to 3times a week. Just love it so much.
Couldnt have got better.
This is….. THE must have of Air Fryers
Great space and EXCELLENT to work with.
Philip’s has done it again. Its a wonderful product of hugh quality. Best part its dishwasher safe so you just wipe down the outside and add in the inners to the dishwasher. Fantastic! And perfect with the rack- it allows you to cook two meals at once.
Very easy to use and to keep clean, I tend to hand wash the basket and fat catcher but it says they are dishwasher safe.
Best gadget in the kitche
Fantastic product but not that easy to clean as advertised
Absolutely adore this. Keeps the flavours, doesn’t actually need any oil at all, much healthier and so quick and easy. Not easy to clean, and you have to do it often, but well worth the effort.
I think this product is a real saver for a busy family. Very good results. Feels very reliable and well designed and made. The price is high but I believe it is worth it for an important appliance that we need it to stay for long and feels more reliable and safe.
Very good! Easy to clean, easy to use and flavou
Amazing!.. just amazing in frying, grilling and roasting. didn’t try baking yet.. but yes it’s amazing get the food ready faster than normal oven and crispy from surface. in love <3
You have to be outstanding to get 5 stars from me so 4 is pretty good. Would recommend.
Great airfyer if you want to get healthy.
No oil needed and super fast cooking times.
This is honestly a must have in any kitchen. It has practically made the oven redundant. Chips taste like they’ve been fried with no oil at all. I use it for anything that I’d normally Chuck in the oven or deep fry. And this does the job perfectly everytime. It saves me going out to get take aways as now I can just quickly throw something in there and it effortlessly cooks it.
Does brilliantly and keeping odours to a minimum too.
Love everything about this model. Had the XL before for several years and now upgraded to this one. The one thing I didn’t like about the XL was the rim around the top of the airfryer but this one is flat and super easy to clean, the basket is loose bottom too so easy to clean too.
Delighted with the Airfryer. Great time-saving piece of equipment. Cooks chicken goujons, rolls, sausages, fish etc with little effort. Very handy for preparing lunch in the mornings
So I had the original Philips airfryer since 2013 – because of the weird design at some stage I pressed the basket release while in motion and the bottom dropped out and disintegrated. Nevertheless I kept on using it until this year when I decided to upgrade – plus sort of annoyed at the constant drips of oil from underneath the fryer. This year I bought the 11 litre tower oven – total waste of money – it’s just a wee oven – doesn’t compare at all to the Philips so donated to elderly mother.
This fryer is a vast improvement on the original. It doesn’t really take up more space in the cupboard. It is easier to clean, has a lovely design (takes a while to get used to how the basket and its drawer work), all parts fit the dishwasher, doesn’t seem to smoke as much as the original because the fat goes under a plastic plate so less surface to burn.
I nearly always use this outside – my big bugbear is that the digital screen is very hard to read outdoors. Would be better off with just a rotary dial for time and one for temp like the old smaller model as nearly everything goes in at 180 for 15 mins and it is a pain programming this every time.
Worth every penny.
This is an awesome airfryer. Sits nicely on our bench and I use it on most days for cooked breakfasts or for meat/chips for dinners. My favorite thing is doing a roast chicken in this. Won’t do them any other way now!
This is the second Philips Airfryer I’ve purchased. The first one was the smaller version. That wasn’t big enough for us so we gave it as a present. This one is perfect. We’ve had it for over a year now and we used it so many times. It’s an easy and quick way of prepping good, healthy food. We cooked all sorts of meat and fish and were very happy with how it all turned out.
Best item I have ever bought! Don’t hesitate to buy. I haven’t used my oven in weeks
I am in love with this product. A bit tedious to clean on the top around the coil especially if you are a clean freak. Advice avoid splash (use less marinade) and give it a quick wipe after use. Other components are dishwasher safe which is amazing.
The air fryer it self cooks amazing delicious moist food. Absolutely game changer for people looking to eat less oil.
I’ve had this for a while and it’s made me enjoy cooking as I hated how long it would take in the oven however with this cooking time is quick
Definitely a good buy and has reduced
waiting times to feed my children with quick cooking times.
Fish fingers , chicken nuggets etc.
I actually love this. When it arrived I couldnt wait to use it. I cooked anything I could find. I have to admit I had a big feast the first day it arrived. It cooks pretty much anything perfectly and quick and food tastes just as good as when its fried. It’s a bit noisy when it’s on but no worse than a microwave. I would reccomend
This is a replacement for our older model of Phillips air fryer which finally broke down after many years of use.
Much bigger than our old one (which is great as I can cook bigger portions) and easier to clean.
Smelled of burning plastic for the first few times we cooked, but stopped completely now.
Very pleased.
Excellent airfryer XXL ! I’m very happy with this item. Very easy to use and clean. Highly recommend it.
Very expensive but well constructed and easy to clean. Seems a lot better design than some of the cheaper ones.
Very convenient and easy to use. It is really a great help for busy moms like me.
This is a review for Philips Airfryer XXL.
While it has “fryer” in the name, this machine requires NO oil to work. It essentially is a standalone convection oven. But boy is great at cooking food. In particular chips come out incredible – you would think they came out of a real deep fat fryer. Certainly nothing I can replicate in a normal oven.
The machine is incredibly easy to use. While there are a number of “preset temperatures” according to the food type you are cooking, in essence you choose the temperature (max 200 degrees C) and set the timer and away it starts. In general I’ve found the machine can cook food much quicker than a traditional oven – my rough rule is I follow the cooking instructions and then deduct 10 degrees C from the recommended temp for a fan oven and put it in for 2/3s of the time. You can cook pretty much anything in the airfryer that you could cook in a normal oven.
The fans are fairly noisy while in operation but I think this can’t be avoided. The machine is reasonably easy to clean as the basket and inside tray can be removed and are diahwasher safe – however I do not clean after every use and obviously it does get greasy after a couple uses.
One important thing to note about airfryers in general is that the basket capacity is fairly small. Therefore, while this fryer is the XXL version, and has a fairly large overall profile, is necessary if you have a family of 4 or more. The basket has a capacity of 1.4 litres, which if full is enough chips for around 4-5 people.
This is an amazing product that I find myself using almost every day and cannot recommend enough.
I am so pleased with my Airfryer. I’ve cooked a whole chicken in it. Makes lovely chips which are fluffy and crispy. Beef burgers, fish fingers, roast potatoes.
Give it a try
Since purchasing this item, I have very rarely used my oven. Chips are done in 12 mins and are crispy and soft inside. No oil is needed at all. Bacon is lovely as well. I have also cooked chicken wings inside it and when compared to the ones I’ve cooked in my oven, the taste is far superior. I also heated up frozen quiches and pizza, however you may need to cut up the item first before cooking so it fits inside the fryer.
This thing is fab and I have told everyone I know to buy one. It really is worth it.
I love mu airfryer! very ease to use. Healthier food with good result! Happy with my purchase
I love, love, love, LOVE my XXL Airfryer.
Pros:
Easy to work out the temperatures and timings for everything, whether fresh food or from frozen.
Makes yummy and health food in a fraction of the time.
Looks smart and tidy.
Dismantles and cleans easily.
Neutrals:
It’s rather large, but fine if you have the space (if not, is well worth making the space!)
Cons:
The app isn’t very good.
Accessories are for the smaller fryer, none for this big fryer.
It will replace most of the features of the oven. Save time and engery. Highly recommended.
Was originally planning to buy the smaller version but i’m glad I got this one instead. Can cook whatever I usually cook in the oven but without having to preheat. Chicken turned out very juicy, reheated spring rolls out from the fridge in 4 mins and they were crispy like they were freshly made.
I love this airfyer. There is a huge basket which allows for preparing large quantities of food. As a family of 5 we go through a lot of home made chips/wedges etc and this makes them easily and tasty. The controls are easy to follow and there are several settings available to make things easier. The manual setting gives you the flexibility to get your chips looking and tasting exactly how you want.
Cleaning the basket is a bit tricky and under the basket does tend to get quite messy quite quickly.
There are accessories available but they are very expensive and many of the recipes in the included booklet use these accessories.
This does take up a large bit of worktop space and it is heavy.
So far Ive cooked 2kg chicken (slightly too big for the frier, recommend 1,5kg max), chips, roast potatoes. Works well. I will try cooking other items in due course. I am using this instead of my main oven as its quicker and easier to clean.
1. Meat cooks quickly and is tastier than if cooked in the oven probably because less oil is used and it cooks more in its own juices / vapours. It is worth setting the timer for less time than suggested in the recipe book (supplied) because you can always cook it a bit more if necessary.
2. Juices collect in the bottom and can be used to make gravy or jus.
3. The maximum size of a whole chicken that can fit comfortably into this is about 1.4kg so you won’t be using this when all the relatives come round for a Sunday roast.
4. Can be used to fry, roast, grill or bake but we haven’t tried grilling or baking in it yet.
5. Even after several attempts, we have not yet worked out the best way to cook vegetables in this. Unless we blanch them first they seem to just dry out and burn. Next time we do a roast we will try putting the meat in the basket and the vegetables under the basket so that they cook in the meat juices.
6. Only 3 stars for versatility because we are not convinced it is any good for baking. As previously stated it does have a tendency to dry things out and it is not big enough to bake more than a few cup cakes or a small cake or loaf.
This product was tested by a family of six.
Pros:
: black shiny acrylic finish looks stylish
: easy to clean- just put basket in dishwasher or wash by hand
: great results with ‘fried’ foods, especially homemade chips, which come out tasty and crispy with just a thin coating of oil
: safe- no chip pan full of boiling oil
: quicker than oven baking
Cons:
: noisy when in use
: very large and takes up a lot of counter space – needs to be stored in a utility or garage really
A good product overall if your family love fried foods but would like to reduce the fat content.
However you need a large kitchen or somewhere to store it when not in use.
Some may find this XXL version too big for their worktops but if you have a large family then you’ll probably find the room. This well made product gets hot quickly and uses a fair bit of electricity like a proper oven. Food comes out like it has been cooked in the oven rather than fried but I expect that it’s impossible to actually fry without oil! So those expecting fried chicken and chips will have to be satisfied with this healthier version. I still getting to grips with cooking different things but I like it!
Used for first time today. So far I can say the build quality is much better than my previous (2) airfryers. Documentation is poor. Cannot figure out how to pause airfryer to rearrange food but waiting for a reply from Philips. Watch this space!
UPDATE 1. Downloaded pdf user instruction files. Answer in there. Why does Philips not include this in the box?
I have downloaded the app and find it annoying. Why is there not an index? I dislike intensely the modern trend of relying on electronic documentation, not only Philips, but most manufacturers, do the same. What if you don’t have internet access? What happened to good, old fashioned instruction books? The booklet supplied with the machine does not give any guidance for use, that comes in a very large paper leaflet, full of pictograms. Not the easiest to follow. The online instructions are much better if you can find them. Come on Philips, not everyone is computer literate and internet savvy. 4 stars because of the lack of good documentation.
UPDATE*** no doubt it cooks well but the longer it is in use the worse the ‘white smoke’ gets when grilling fatty foods. The kitchen disappears in a white, greasy smog (despite extractor fan an open windows). Putting water in the basket is supposed to minimise this problem but it doesn’t.
UPDATE 4 YEARS LATER!***
All my complaints still hold true but there are positives that weren’t obvious at the beginning. The removable base of the basket is non stick fine mesh, unlike most of the current popular models that have solid bases or removable bottoms with non stick coatings. The coatings on these begin to wear very quickly and I have seen more than one YouTube video showing some baskets have warped after 6 months of use necessitating purchasing spare baskets. I cut a piece of non stick silicon mesh to place in the bottom of my Philips air fryer and after 4 years frequent use, the base is as good as new. The fan is exceptionally powerful and food tends to cook on both sides so that turning the items, although best to do, is not as essential as with other airfryers I have had. Due to the power of the fan parchment liners, unless well weighted down with food, can curl up over the food. The circulation through the mesh bottom is excellent. The plastic cover of the power switch is now cracked and the shiny finish round the central button has disintegrated but the airfryer still works as it did when it was new. Not bad for 4 years hard labour!
i like it,the size suit our needs.. can take whole chicken cut it two half to be ready in 40 to 45 min… also a whole bag of fries fit inside …
Didn’t find any differnce from the other smaller version regarding the coocking time or quality of the food coocked .The moving basket net is very helpful in cleaning process that i don’t have to buy separate non stick grill pan only 4 stars coz it is alittle bit over priced but i hope it last long enough for that price
This is huge! It will fit a whole chicken easily. Arrived nicely packaged with the majority of packaging being recyclable. Booklet is simple with some nice recipe ideas (chips anyone?). The airfryer is so easy to operate, the food I have made has been excellent and even chips come slightly guilt free and taste fantastic. The airfryer is very easy to clean and looks great.
I’ve always loved the idea of an air fryer and therefore had high and slightly unrealistic expectations of what owning one would be like. Yes it is the healthy option, yes you barely need any oil, and yes it is so easy to use that a chimp could operate it…but the chips, the chips! Chips are obviously going to be healthier and therefore less fatty, and whilst not quite as tasty as their fat filled sisters they are pretty tasty.
Yet clearly it’s not all about the chips (well it is really) as you can cook pretty much everything that you would in a pan or oven, but without all the spitting, grease, or getting burnt. Surprisingly, vegetables also taste pretty good. They are still crunchy and full of flavour, even more so than when they are steamed.
The compartments are also fully dishwasher proof which is something that cannot be said of all air fryers.
An impressive little machine that is a must have.
I admit I can be a bit of a technophobe and have a nervous attitude to anything that gets really hot on my kitchen worktops; I am the person who would stand and watch over my old deep fat fryer to make sure it didn’t bubble hot oil all over — it never did but the nerves couldn’t stand it.
So when I got this piece of kitchenalia, I was not sure about the healthy air fryer malarkey everyone was raving about. I left it a week before I even got the instruction book out, then began reading all the small print (for safety reasons of course, not at all putting off trying it out). In the meantime a 13 year old relative calmly stocked up the pan with frozen fries, set the clock and had delicious hot crunchy fries served up before I had even got to the component description list.
We have fallen in love with Phil. The biggest problem I’m going to have with him – is keeping him, because everyone wants to have him once they taste what he can produce: Healthier fries in minutes, cooked thoroughly and crispy; whole chickens come out like rotisserie bought, with deliciously moist meat and crispy skin – in less time than it takes to oven cook; and any number of fish finger/ goujons etc can all be done in here. Basically if you can fry or roast it you can probably cook it in here in less time and with less fat.
There is a lot of info online about cooking with an air fryer, and that is useful for guidance on dishes and ideas. I can only say, after initial misgivings, I love it. Definitely the way forward.
The benefits of airfryers are clear for all to see. Fry your food using a fraction of the fat of a deep fat fryer with perfect results every time (as long as you follow the settings correctly). All models are, in theory, a good addition to your kitchen. However what sets this apart is that it’s just so easy to use and to clean. You can opt for the one-touch settings, or the simple to use temperature/time dial. No fuss. That’s just how it should be.
BOOK
======
It’s a superb kitch gadget, but I’d also recommend getting a book so you can get the most out of it. I got this Philips Airfryer: Philips Airfryer Cookbook: Quick and Easy Philips Airfryer Recipes For Your Health
PHILIPS
=======
These airfryers have been around for a few years now and I think there are quite a few competitors for this type of gadget now.
However, as the original creator: Philips, I think they make the best one ones.
CHICKEN
========
Wow. This has a unique, beautiful taste. You know that friend chicken can taste nice but afterwards you feel a little… heavy, this creates chicken in a wonderful way: very crispy whilst juicy. And not too much oil. And it’s incredibly easy to clean.
XXL
====
For a family this is the best option. But even a single person may want to choose this option.
This Airfryer cooks fish, chicken and meat, etc. and is much quicker than conventional cooking.
It does take a while to get used to it though.
It is not simply a plug and play type of gadget. Sometimes it takes a while before you know how long something will take to cook.
5 DAYS A WEEK
=============
Out of a typical 7 day week, I use this at least 5 days.
CLEANING
=========
Very easy to clean.
LEARNING CURVE
===============
I cannot stress enough that you will need to read the instructions and also write down your own tips of how to use it. After a while it’s straightforward but an investment in a recipe book will pay dividends. There is an enclosed 30 recipe book. (it’s OK)
ONLINE
=======
There are also loads of youtube clips with tips and recipes.
ATTACHMENTS
=============
I bought the baking one for bread and the one that creates an additional level. They’re not cheap but they do compliment this beauty.
FROZEN
========
Yes it can. I’ve made BBQ Chicken Wings and Sweet Potato Fries from frozen.
CHIPS
======
You will never go back to the old way. Perfect ‘healthier’ chips each time. 10 minutes and voil – chips.
OVERALL
========
I’m still learning to use it but so far, so good. If you have any tips, please feel free to comment. Thanks
I’ve had quite a bit of fun playing with this and trying different things out. I don’t usually grill much food, as I have a tendency to overcook things on the outside, whilst leaving them nearly raw on the inside. This machine has all the benefits of both a grill and an oven, and unlike a grill, doesn’t need watching all the time.
My first project was chips, and although they were crispy-ish, I thought they were a little bit leathery. These were just supermarket cheap frozen chips, so I later tried Aunt Bessie’s and found them much better, although not as nice as deep fried, although this might be the price you pay for ‘healthier” chips.
Bacon and sausages have both been very successful, although some fatty pork, followed by prawn toasts caused an incredible amount of white smoke, so we probably won’t do that again!
I cooked a Sunday dinner chicken in there just to try it, and although my chicken was smaller than the maximum, it was quite difficult to get into the drawer, and seemed to be too close to the element. However, it was cooked perfectly in just over an hour, although the fryer needed quite a lot of cleaning afterwards. This, for me, is the only annoying thing about it – it is a bit of a pain to wash. Most of it can go in the dishwasher, which is good, but every time it’s used it needs it’s drawer, mesh, fat drainer and base washed, which can be quite time consuming, depending on what you have cooked. This might put me off using it a bit once the novelty has worn off. It is also a very large machine, so it’s not easy to find somewhere to keep it, as it’s probably too big to keep on the worktop when it’s not being used.
Eventually, I’d like to get some of the accessories for this so that I can cook a wider range of items in it. I’m thinking it would probably do nearly everything that my old halogen oven could, so might be a good replacement.
Time to chuck away that revolting old chip pan, the Airfryer is the future. I’ve always hated using my oven to cook chips or roast chicken or really anything. It’s an ugly old thing with undiscovered horrors lurking within. This Airfryer is the soluction to all of my woes. Just dump in the load, set the timer, and forget about it. When the clock hits zero your food is ready and all without the use of fats. Infact, this device actually reduces the grease and fat already contained within foods. Also, it’s real easy to clean as barely any residue is left behind.
This will now be my main method of cooking foods in the kitchen. The oven is retired.
The Philips Airfryer xxl is my first go at an “Airfryer” — I liked the sound of getting a similar result to frying without the need of huge amounts of oil. With these you really need the bare minimum of oil.
The unit itself is quite large — like a squarer, squatter microwave so you need a decent amount of kitchen side space for it. Also you shouldn’t put it too close to the wall as in needs the air circulation. Luckily it fitted into a corner of my kitchen no problem.
The instruction booklet you get with it is next to useless — there are some pictures without any text that relates to them. Luckily I managed to quickly locate and download the PDF version of the proper 25 page user manual and this is very good. It is a real shame though that they cannot supply these when you have shelled out over 300 for this item! I’ve put the url of this manual in the comments section. You can also get a 200 recipe book on line also — which is handy for the more adventurous (I’ve already downloaded mine).
You pull out the “fryer” by the handle and see the basket inside that and then the oil catcher in the pan below. As a trial I tried out 300 grams of frozen chips — I put just a tiny bit of extra olive oil on them and air fried them for 15 minutes. They came out really well — very similar to fried chips but without the calories. Most importantly they didn’t come out dried out like they do from the oven — perhaps the little olive oil helped them from being dried out. I also did some homemade chicken goujons and again these were nice and crisp like they had been fried and not dried out.
You are advised to wash the unit inside before first use (either with a non-abrasive sponge or in the dishwasher — all component parts are dishwasher safe) and also after each use. One small word of warning — if you take out the basket and inadvertently close the unit it is difficult to open again as the handle for doing so is on the basket — luckily my wife has “lock-picker” fingers so no real problems but it is something to be aware of.
Will I be using this now as my go-to cooking unit? It hasn’t yet taken over from the oven or microwave as I am still getting used to its merits. It does get quite hot and is a little noisy (a bit noisier than our microwave) but it does heat up really quickly, is nicely self-contained and clean and tidy on the shelf so I can see myself using it more and more.
The Philips Airfryer Xxl is large and heavy and buyers will need to make sure they are able to handle it and make sure there is enough space in their kitchen. It uses Rapid Air technology to heat the food from all angles and it can fry foods without the use of oil with up to 90% less fat. It comes with an instruction manual and a recipe booklet. Noise is minimal when it is switched on, sounding more like an electric fan than a machine that is actively frying its food. The frying process involves removing the basket at intervals to inspect the food. Chicken pieces were fried unevenly and so required movement with a utensil. Potato chips are fried evenly in around twenty minutes. Users with larger hands may find accessing the food inside the basket difficult. Also removing the basket and mesh can be cumbersome.
With little or no oil usage there is very little mess on the mesh and on the tray after usage. This means it may not be necessary to clean the components after every use. All removable parts are safe to clean in a dishwasher. These Philips Airfryers are recommended by Gordon Ramsay. They must be good.
This is my first foray into airfryers and I have to say I am very impressed. I looked at them before and it was between the philips and the tefal one.
What swung me to philips was the compact and vertical nature of it allowing it to fit into the kitchen environment that bit easier.
This one is the xxl version and it is massive! It’s worth bearing this in mind if you intend to store on the worktop or if in a cupboard you’ll need a big space for it.
It is well made as I have come to expect from philips over the years. It looks premium and is reasonably dishwasher friendly.
The tray is xxl and holds up to 1.4k of chips or even a whole chickem. This large capacity draw is very versatile. Chickens, chips, both and everything inbetween.
The digital display is easy to read and makes getting the settings right easy. There are five presets and a really handy book included for recipes.
It has a handy fat collection system and the removable bits go in the dishwasher.
IN terms of versatility you can by some extra accessories that allow you to use the machine for baking. I havent tried this function yet.
This is convenience cooking and a much safer alternative to deep fat frying which causes a lot of fires. The downside is you lose some of the taste which you would get from deep frying. It is however a decent balance. Really like i
I am trying to make my mind up about this. I think my biggest issue is it is not really a fryer. You see the definition of frying in the Cambridge Dictionary is “to cook food in hot oil or fat” and that is not really how this works. Think of it as a tightly contained fan oven and you are much closer to how it works.
This version is the XXL model and this was confirmed when the large box was delivered. It is supplied with a basket, rather basic instructions and a well-written cookbook. Ensure you remove all the packaging from inside before you attempt to use it and heat it up first before putting any food in to remove odours from the new device. It looks to be well made with a solid construction and clear digital display on the front but is rather large for its capacity measuring 32 x 43 x 32 cm and weighing in at a hefty 8KG and this is exasperated by the black finish. However, there are smaller versions available if space is an issue although you do obviously lose capacity. The instructions warn to place on a heat resistant surface although it seemed fine on our standard laminate worktop you may want a ceramic cover for extended use.
The controls are easy to work out with a dial used to set temperature and timing and the device does heat up quickly. It is reasonably quiet in use with just a hum from the fans but does use a lot of electricity rated at over 2200 watts. The device works by circulating hot air around the product you are cooking. Any oil required is added in small quantities by yourself and usually rubbed or sprinkled on the surface. This is a healthy way of cooking but it isn’t frying. I cooked some frozen chips with it following the instructions which came out nice and hot, if a little dry, rather like they have come out of the oven and with similar cooking times. The main time saver is it heats up extremely quickly and is quick and simple to clean with all the key items that touch the food being dishwasher safe.
I will experiment with it further but I suspect that while this is a healthier way of cooking which is to be applauded it does not quite match the taste of fried of grilled cooking where the fat is a greater part of the process. I have had the same experience with George Forman grills for example. That said this can also be used to bake and roast and used for cakes puddings and pastries so it is potentially very versatile. So despite being rather expensive, it does seem to be a quality product. I am just not convinced about the process of “air frying” if the taste is your priority.
This is a fantastic product with one HUGE drawback – and it’s one that’s obvious when you’re ordering.
I was very impressed with the speed and efficiency of this Airfryer. It uses very little added oil, so it’s healthier, and it cleans very easily. The boast that it can fit a whole chicken is quite accurate – preparing a full family meal is easy and quick.
I have no hesitation recommending this to anyone.
Oh, the HUGE drawback? Well the clue is in the name: this is an XXL Airfryer. It measures 322 x 433 x 316mm, or a foot wide and a foot and a half deep. To give it a home, you need to have an XXL kitchen to match, but if you do I think it’s a fabulous fryer.
