After reading some of the less positive reviews, I was a little apprehensive after buying this. The product I received is sturdy, well made, practical and polishes really well. I’m no professional car detailer but for a home or DIY user, it’s a great polisher.
I used this in combination with Meguiare’s Ultimate Compound and the results are nothing short of astonishing. I’d never used one of these before, but after a few YouTube tutorials I gave it a go.
So easy to use.
Used on my car great with different speed settings and ease of changing pads
This is a 5 star plus product.
Situation
I’m a complete noob to DA detailing having only ever used manual techniques before. I had watched a lot of videos on detailing with a dual action and I decided to have a go myself.
I’m not paying 400 for a Meguiars machine so I looked at the best of the rest and this machine came up looking good.
I’ve been waiting for the weather to be good enough before I tried it out as it’s been very hot and not great for compound or polishing in the heat. This is why I’m reviewing now.
Set Up
Firstly I’m using good quality 5″ pads such as these;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07WCT7QJ9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The machine comes with a 6″ disc and so I got the 5″ backing discs;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09F66F4JS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Please note that any discs you buy must have the M8 male thread, this is the thread the machine uses.
The reason I bought the 5″ discs as it seems like they are the standard size that most detailers use, so I wanted to keep parity. I’m sure that 6″ which comes with the machine is fine, but some reviewers have said the supplied pads are not of the best quality. I haven’t used so I can’t comment.
Review
As I said I’m a complete noob and so I spent a long time watching videos on Youtube before I took the plunge. If you go to the Meguiars channel, there’s a series called ‘Detailing 101’. If you don’t know what your doing and all this is new to you then I strongly recommend you watch this series, in particularly the episode ‘Removing Swirls & Scratches with Ultimate Compound – Meguiar’s Detailing 101 — UK Edition’. The next video will take you through the polishing step using a DA and I recommend this as well.
Ensure that you’ve watched this a few times and don’t skip, let it sink in and just do a quick refresher when you’re ready to start the operation.
Make sure you prime the pad with the product as shown in the video, and ensure you only mark out enough of the area for a 2ft ish by 2ft ish (50cm square, 500mm square) work area.
1. Put 5 pea sized lumps of product on the pad so it looks like a 5 on a dice
2. Set the machine to setting 1 on the rotary dial.
3. Put the machine on the paint surface WITHOUT yet turning on the machine.
4. Once on the paint surface, switch on the machine.
5. WITHOUT APPLYING ANY PRESSURE ON THE MACHINE, rapidly spread the product over the area.
6. Switch off the machine while still on the paint surface – this is to ensure that it stops the machine without flinging tiny spots of product all over your car – believe me I’ve forgotten and it makes a real mess, or I’ve lifted the pad off the paintwork, so it does take some getting used to but you’ll learn if you do it enough times
7. If using compound set the dial between 4 and 5. For polishing I used 6 (maximum speed on this machine).
8. With the disc on the paintwork switch the machine on and move it in across the paint work in a linear direction until you reach the boundary of your area, move up 1 pad width and draw it back in the other direction until you reach 1 pad width above where you started. Repeat until you’ve completed the area. Next move the machine up to down in a similar fashion until you completed the panel you’ve marked. So you should have completed a left to right then up and down pass on the area.
If using compound move at 1″ (2.5cm, 25mm) per second. DON’T RUSH IT AND NEVER PRESS ON THE MACHINE TO STALL IT let the machine’s weight do the work, you are only guiding it with you hand NOT APPLYING PRESSURE. If polishing you can go quite quickly, but still don’t use any pressure. Finally, stop the machine with it still on the paintwork.
9. Set the machine speed down to 1 again and repeat on the next area.
Many reviewers on here have complained that the machine stalls. This is because they’re leaning on top of it and pressing down hard. This is not the way to work, and you’ll burn out the machine. They are not designed as sanders, you’re not sanding floorboards you are polishing your car. It cannot be overstated to just allow the weight of the machine to do the work while you’re only guiding the machine gently with your hand.
Also, the compounding takes time and so I’d recommend that you pop a tinny, put on your headphones and go into the zone.
I also have read in other reviews about people needing 3 hands to operate the machine as the speed controller is set at the end of the machine. Frankly that’s nonsense, if you are using the machine correctly then you only use 1 speed on each cycle, you should never change the speed once the operation has commenced.
I’ve just finished my compounding and polishing and never has my car looked so good – even though I’ve hand detailed regularly in the past. It takes time – prepare to lose a day – but it’s well worth it.
Happy Days.
I tried using poor boys black hole by hand and i created more of a mess and marring.
Invested in this DA and finally used it this weekend with the same poorboys glaze.
wow the results are amazing. I did find the DA hard to use but that is more down to being a novice and trying to replicate the procedures shown on YouTube 😀
I am sure i will get better as i move on to using this on family and friends car (to perfect my approach).
The swirls on my car are now completely hidden by this glaze which is great. side note but related, i wont be using poor boys black hole on my next run at this, will be looking at Autoglym super resin polish or Meguiars equivalent.
I also sealed this with meguiars nanotech wax 2.0 by hand. super easy to apply and buff of by hand.
overall very happy with this beginners DA good one for all novices.
Sturdy well-built machine, and the pads that came with it have lasted well unlike others I bought on Amazon.
Wasn’t sure if the slowest speed would be slow enough but it is just right. Seems well built, sturdy and the motor sounds good. It would be good to have an option of 5 inch pads. All in all a good kit for the price
Excellent bit if kit….removed oxidisation from my Red Van with ease. The wide range variable speed is a real plus .
It also refurbished a large mahogany dining table using sanding pads.
Wow what can I say totally transforms your old dreary painwork, I can highly recommend this polisher the results are amazing
A good polisher for the money. After a lot of research this does the job.
Only used once and its well built and sturdy. I may upgrade to a smaller disc though as it’s a bit huge. Good product (so far).
To be honest the machine works with 220V and it written in the box itself, but the The specification which is written is wrong I think to be updated from the Amazo
Not used it yet but looks good in the bag.
Don’t get caught up in the detailing snobbery. This machines fine for the hobbiest.
I received this as a gift for Christmas from the missis. Just had a quick blast tonight on the bonnet and it’s a great machine polisher for the DIY’er that does their or families a few times a year. Not sure how it would hold up full time of course and I’ll never know. Plenty of pads and spare bushes in the carry case.
So far so good for the price.
A very good quality polisher, it did not disappoint my expectations …
Wanted to machine polish my car as it had quite a few swirl marks on it. Watched several detailing how to videos on Youtube and decided to invest in a polisher.
Saw this one on Amazon for a decent price so decided to take the plunge.
I was not dissapointed the polisher is easy to use if not a little on the heavy side after using it for a while.
The supplied pads are ok and it even tells you which colour pad to use for light / heavy cut etc. on the pad packaging.
Just take it steady, I started off with the speed set at around 3 to 3.5 and after i gained a little confidence moved up to speed 4.
Just watch a few Youtube videos on how to use a DA polisher correctly and honestly you cant go wrong.
Highly recommended.
I used a light cutting compound followed by Autoglym Super Resin Polish and the car is now like a mirror.
Finish off with a coat of wax and it shines like new.
Ok but the handle keeps coming loose from the vibration but it does a good job
found this very simple to work and results were better than I expected
I used this to cut and polish an old vw passat. Wow! It came up like new. So easy to use, and at a super low price. Absolutely superb.
Great product and good value for the money it cost; we bought it to buff up wooden floors and polish the car and it does both jobs well
Very happy with this tool
Reassuringly heavy and solid. Performs well, comes with a great set of tools & accessories and a spare set of brushes for the motor should they ever be required. Also includes a storage bag.
Brilliant piece of kit. Totally worth it. My sapphire black Z4 now looks so much better than before. Cheers.
You get so much for your money, the included accessories would really add to the cost if purchased separately, total bargain.
Ok this is not a sander like some posts say, it is a D/A polisher however you can sand with it with the right adaptor.
The posts which say the item fails to spin when applying pressure are either using it incorrectly or were sent a faulty unit. (most likely the former) The whole point of these types of polishers is to make them idiot proof. The item will stop spinning to protect your cars finish from damage when applying to much pressure which may burn the paint.
What you get for your money is amazing and so cheap that if it died I would happily buy another.
The finish you can get on a car is astounding and you need to use almost no effort. The weight of the machine is plenty, just push it over the cars surface and let the machine do the work. All you need is to watch a few Youtube videos for advice and your ready to go. Professional results are easily attained.
Cannot fault the product, I have used this to finish a project I’ve been undertaking, the image supplied is of a rattle can paint job and you can see how well this polished up, easy to use, sturdy build quality and high speed motor, cannot recommend enough for the price, 5*
It cleaned up the scuff marks and the rubbed paint to a lovely shine. I’m a DIYer whose filled in scratches and car park battle scars.
It’s not to heavy for my arthritic limbs.glad I bought this.No regrets.
This is a very good DA for the money, and gives you brilliant results. Comes with an assortment of sponges and buffing heads which uses Velcro to attach to the disc. It’s variable speed control gives you total control of your polishing. I used this for cutting in, application of gloss coat, final polish and seal. Cuts time down considerably compared to hand application and gives you the finish you have been looking for.
Easy to use, but obviously it’s only as good as disks you put on i
Sturdy build and comes with the pads. Must admit I’ve replaced the disc with a 5″ rather than 6″ that it comes with as was just too large a pad. It has a good action and decent cord length. Have used to apply polish to the car and used for buffing final protective coating.
Brilliant machine, been valeting for 4 years. Do customers cars. Use G3 and other compound products with this machine. Check the results on the photos. It speaks for itself, nice smooth and not too heavy either. Great on door frames
Very good product used on my car now looking dirt free and beading beautifully.
It comes with some firm and very firm pads for correcting (getting rid of swirls/scratches as well as some soft ones for polishing and a decent little bag to keep all the bits together.
There’s no description, but I’ve found that the yellow one is the hardest for correction, then white and black is the softest for polishing, the waffle pads are better for curved surfaces the flat ones for roof and bonnet.
Avoid T-cut (according to some friendly detailers this is nicknamed “devils juice”). I used either Autoglym restorer then super resin polish or a turtle wax “all in one” if the paint doesn’t need much work. Then apply and remove a good wax by hand (I was told to never wax with a machine).
It also has a lamb bonnet, but i was advised not to use it as I’m a novice, but to use a wax applicator instead to put on and then buff with a microfibre cloth.
I won’t be going back to old fashioned polishing now, it is noiser but I wear headphones and its a relaxing job.
Easy to use, and for the price the results are amazing. Great tool for beginners very forgiving
So far so good, I bought it to bring shine back to my dad’s car and it worked a treat, used maguires compound polish. Had a go at removing slight yellowing on headlights on my VW golf and it was really easy, bought a different cutting compound for that, just remember to tape of edges you don’t want to polish or get polish on and keep it moving so as to not generate too much heat. Really happy with it!
So easy to use and the results I achieved were amazing
Liked everything about it. I have not used it yet so I can’t tell you anything about it.
Although I haven’t done any polishing yet
It seems very sturdy and good quality
Good polisher for the money and does the job, however the pads are pretty crap. If you have heavy scratches you will struggle using the pads that came with the unit.
Cracking machine easy to use first time I’ve done a car look at the results !
Good value – easy to use and pads it came with are ok. Did a full 3 step detail on the car and worked well for hours on end… Bought a smaller plate and will use different pads next time but all good!
The main switch is a little fiddly but seems durable enough.
This is the one to go for. It is idiot proof and nothing can go wrong
Only managed to use this machine for the first time this weekend and was surprised how good it was. My only criticism is that the speed lever is under your supporting hand and sometimes you inadvertently change the speed of the machine. Could be repositioned to the top of the body.
Used it 3 times so far, it’s far quicker and takes most of the hard work out of polishing a car. My cars never been so shiny as it is now! No swirl marks with this polisher, due to the dual action. Would definitely recommend
Great Value for Money – Change the Grease on the internal gears immediately as it smooths out the action nicely – I have used it on 4 cars and it does a more than acceptable job
I used the product to polish a paintwork repair on my car-the supplied buffing pads are very good quality and the random orbit of the machine gave a superb finish.
Really pleased with the polisher easy to use and good value for money.
Would like to know if more sheepskin polishers available to purchase.
Use it with Maguires ultimate compound worked a treat on flat paint kept it at speed 4 paint came up shiny
Really good quality and sorted out scratches on paint work
Works like a dream makes black paint on my car super glossy helps remove swirls high gloss shine
Haven’t used it yet waiting for the good weather to come first but seems like a solid machine
Only used it once, but it seems a really good quality machine.
So far so good, seems to work really well, solid and well made. Great value.
Better explanation ,for use of pads. Waffle etc?! I use for minor scratches ,mild polish, and waxing
Nothing not to like. Pads easy to use and remove. Gives a great finish to the paintwork on my car.
Bought as a pressie for my son, he loves it, uses it on his pride and joy so must be good
The polisher looks good when taken out of the included carry case which is compact and sturdy. Not had a chance to use the machine yet, turned it on and seems to be powerful capable of doing a good job of polishing a car. Only time and use will tell, will leave an updated review with pictures of the results.
***UPDATE*** used the polisher couple of times with Autoglym Resin polish, and does an amazing job of removing minor swirls and scratches better than a hand polish, well worth buying the DA Polisher.
This item is asi ready to use, built really well and is solid. Tried on the car before it got cold and it polished perfectly well
I can’t wait for summer to get out and polish my car.
Very impressed with it for the cost and seems to be lasting pretty well. The pads supplied are ok, but I recommend getting a 125mm backing plate and some Lake Country pads, plus an 80mm backing plate and pads comes in handy.
The only annoying part is the position of the speed dial, it would be better if it was positioned elsewhere as you have to move the polisher to see what speed you are moving to and reposition your hand to make speed changes whilst polishing.
In my opinion, for the money you can’t go wrong. It works well, it’s light enough, I find setting 4 seems to be about the sweet spot.
I haven’t tried the pads that came with it, I can’t imagine they are any good. If, like me, you’ve watched loads of YouTube videos then you’ll know that having a decent pad is as important as the product you use.
Having now machine polished 4 cars with this polisher I can say it’s worth it money. And it’s actually paid for itself several times over compared to if I was to have paid a professional.
My husband tried it yesterday and was amazed how easy is to work with it. The product does what it supposed to do.
Works really well. Makes your hands feel funny in a good way.
Would recommend.
Great product used to give my cars a good polish for the winter. Not too heavy. Would not hesitate to reccimend
Great product , cleans up my car perfectly and makes it allow me to not clean my car so often.
Silverline 432202 Hook and Loop Backing Pad, 125 mm, 5/16 inch UNF
Well built, maybe the speed regulator can be placed on the top part of it for easier reach but apart from that all good
Great bit of kit makes polishing out swirl marked a breeze.
Just beware of the spray, put too much polish on and it goes everywhere and it’s a nightmare to get off the trim.
I got great results using this polisher on my car. I recommend buying a 5inch backing pad with a 5/16″ x 24 thread for the 6 inch foam polishing pads. The only improvement I could suggest would be to put the speed setting near the power switch as the position of it makes it hard to see and adjust the speed setting when the polisher is in use. Great DA polisher though, excellent value which gives showroom shine.
This is a great machine, I have used this to detail polish my car and it’s done a fantastic job.
Easy to use, soft start, used twice and didn’t experienced any problem, also this one does not vibrate too much. Polish very well.
Brilliant product, easy to use and gives an exceptionally good finish. Nice carrying bag too. Well pleased.
Great bit of exiptment polished missis car with 3 stage polish. Well impressed
Already using this R/O rotary buffer/polisher and I’m well pleased with it.
Great product. Upon opening box you can tell its a good piece of kit. Very easy to use however can be heavy on the arms if used for lengthy periods. I polished and waxed an estate car with it and my shoulders were screaming at me afterwards. Only downside… foam pads shrink a bit after being washed.
Very easy to use and great value for the money
Wasn’t expecting the same results as the professional’s i managed to remove 80 percent of the light scratches on my car and with ease compared to hand buffing. Would reccomend to anyone.
Only had weather to use it a few times but definitely makes a noticeable difference and easy to use.
Wow.
What a deal, and what a result. This was bought on a deal. I was skeptical, but it is a great DA polisher.
Used for polishing resin works as described need to buy extra pads as the two supplied is not enough
