Maravilloso.
It s working so nice and it’s came after one day but its fine
Best for Vloggers, Musicians, Filmmaker’s & Podcasters;
Best product in the market which supports iOS devices, when you have an option to hear the output on real-time is the best feature you get along with the microphone.
Shure has provided two applications such as Motiv audio and Motiv video, where we can juggle around with the audio settings, which gives control in our hand to make the audio feel more refined and structured.
Shure is a well known brand and best for microphones, Go for it to explore many things! Cheers Shure Team!
Thank you Amazon for delivering the kit early.
I love the mic. Just wish I knew how to use the app bette
This is truly an excellent microphone. The audio quality is really nice and the shure app does the rest. The quality of each and every components is rich. The seller has got the best price and I’d recommend this seller. Also, the packaging is top notch and I appreciate it. Time to deliver is highly appreciated and amazon scores it even during this pandemic times.
Overall, I’d say this is one of the best.
This is a great item and it works well the sound quality is A1 – recommend
Good sound quality. The cable is shorter but that makes sense with the phone dock on the stand.
***UPDATE*** May 2021
Since the iOS 14.6 update (24/5/21) this appears to have resolved many of the issues the mic and the associated MOTIV apps were having on the iPhone 12 Pro range.
This is my second unit in a week! The first I received I had a major sound issue with, and after various conversations with Shure Technical Team, it was agreed that the mic was faulty. I was concerned in case it wasn’t the mic but my iPhone 5s and iPhone 6s + were the issue. I immediately arranged a replacement with Amazon, who were brilliant in handling the issue. (Thank you)
Today, I received that replacement and plugged it into my iPhone and SUCCESS.
I desperately wanted this to work as it is a beautiful piece of kit.
It is everything in a box that you need to create self-tapes, video content or voice over or podcasting. It’s a clever piece of equipment that has presets for Speech, Singing, Music, etc.. It comes complete with the cables, micro B to USB and Lighting, the phone holder with cold shoe and Pixi Manfrotto tripod desk top stand.
The entire set up can easily fit inside a case or even a handbag. In fact there are various ways the kit can be set up for whatever use you require it for.
As I said I wanted this to work and am delighted that it now does. The only other cable I had to additionally purchase is an AMV-USB, which will allow me, should I wish, to use the mic with my iMac.
Shure also produces two free apps that work seamlessly with the MV88+ MOTIV Audio and Video, these ensure the content you create is easily shared.
All in all an impressive kit that I look forward to familiarising myself with and creating and sharing professional work related content in the months and years ahead.
I loved the clarity and depth that this little mic picks up. I use it for doing audition self tests . It’s so great at getting every little sound and detail from what you’re saying . Unlike the standard inbuilt mic for iPhone .
A nice little tripod stand that works well with our android and iOS phones. Only criticism is that there should be the option to tilt the upper section and even elevate it an inch or two more. Found we had to go Jenga style and build platforms for the tripod to sit on to get to a reasonable height!
This microphone is really cool and the app is great! Easy to choose from presets for recording and streaming whether it’s just a voice recording, music, or loud concert. Easy to use manual settings also. I recommend downloading the manual for a simple read. The mic can be adjusted for many scenarios. Problems that I think need to be addressed for improving this mic are having a bypass to plug in a power cord when the mic is being used, possibly a head phone jack (although most people use blue tooth headphones now) and a longer blade to plug it into the iPhone as you have to take the phone out of the phone case to plug it in.
Super super happy with the Shure MV88 video kit. The kit itself is easy to assemble and sturdy and allows for excellent quality video recording. Download the Shure app once you have the product and you will see what I mean, super good sound quality. Really really happy with this, would highly recommend!
Fantastic sound and functionality with many accessories included. Premium quality and fast postage by Amazon.
Excellent product and easy to set up. Takes some setting adjustments to get the right level for your requirements but the app registers your setting and saves it for next time.
I make casual YouTube videos- nothing serious, only around 1.5k subs. I use Final Cut Pro X and this mic is great for voiceovers and for taking out on the road! More on that in a moment…
Unboxing the very nice box you find inside the mic itself (with a foam cover for it), sure stand, phone attachment and a range of cables with the usual paperwork/instructions. These cables include lightning to micro usb, usb-c to micro usb. These made it quick and convenient to connect to your mobile phone (iOS/Android) and/or iPad. The sure (Manfrotto) stand has some adjustment (swivel.turn) but not for height. I find this okay to do some solo unboxing with, and for taking out as it is comfortable to hold. I found the phone attachment to be convenient, but need to be careful as my phone slipped out once!
The sound quality is very impressive! You can record on you mobile with the voices app on iPhone, or there is a dedicated Shure app. I found recording directly into FCPX easy as well. The usb-c cable means it attaches to my MacBook directly, and it is great that companies are included these cables now to reduce dingle clutter!
Overall, a very well build mic that is convenient and practical both on my desk and to pick-up and take on the go for easy transportation. Would highly recommend. 5/5
The mic is robust and with the App vey easy to use. I have recorded solo cello which is a hard task with very satisfactory results. The only issue I had with the App was not realising that there are different edit and share option on the portrait screen from the landscape version. Changing the file type and export are really easy.
Fantastic product. It’s so good, I’ve not had to use handheld mic! Many thanks.
After watching several YouTube videos on this product, my expectations were exceeded with the quality of the mic. Great for making videos with decent audio.
It is a great microphone but having JUST a lightning connection directly limits its use (can’t use it with my dJI Osmo Mobile 3). It would have been handy to have the option to use a cable and mount it on a cold shoe etc. And no, THE MV88+ is different but doesn’t solve those problems for mobility either.
I love this mic because it looks awesome, comes with an amazing case, it is strong and indestructible. Portable and so simple to use when you download the app. Watch a couple youtube videos and you will know how to use it in less than 20 minutes. Highly recommend it. I am not that technically inclined but I am a musician and youtube guy so this mic made my life so much better…
Compra recomendada.
Shure products are always top quality. Easy and convenient to use. Sound is grea
As expected from Shure, this mic offers superb sound quality, and both the audio and video apps are easy to use. Excellent piece of kit.
The plug-in bit won’t work with most cases, so be prepared to get an extension, or modify your case, or take it off when recording. Not a big deal for me, but it may be for some people.
Great product, I now have fantastic sound quality on my videos.
Surpris par la qualit du son capt . Je recommande le produit .
Very very good for its money, I’ve used other iPhone XS compatibles and no special difference, but this mic!! Is great! It has an easy to use app, both for video and music/speech. Does exactly what it describes, if there are any bad reviews about this then that person is broken or a potato
Superb product, plug and play, easy app available, fantastic sound quality and all coming in a handy travel pouch. Mini tripod is the ticket for VLOGs plus super quick delivery and well packaged.
I keep my Shure MV88 Digital microphone in my handbag and in three seconds I can transform a mediocre video into a much slicker production with enhanced audio.
This microphone exceeded my expectations. I took it to the royal Albert hall in London for a classical music event and I was blown away with the sound quality. Delighted with my purchase.
I have an associate who travels and uses this to record his podcast on the road. It blew me away so I had to buy one!
It’s the real deal and I love it!
I upped my rating to 4 stars do to the improvement of this Mic over the built in iPhone 11 Pro mic. I was upset with the short connector as many were. Some said they cut notches in their cases etc….what???? I ordered a small lightening extender and it works perfectly. Stays attached to the MV88 and it is very stable. No need to destroy your case.
I also ordered the MV88+ and am not impressed. There was a firmware update right away so maybe something is screwy but the audio of the 88+ is worse than the MV88. Even the gain setting are not the same. MV88+ has much less reach than the older model. Again…maybe the firmware update messed something up, but I have done about 50 side by side videos with different settings on both and the MV88+ is just not that good.
I’m no sound tech but I think it work on my iPhone?
Seems pretty good. The only glitch (?) I found was that the software, MOTIV Video recorded the video on its side when I had fixed my iPhone7+ to maintain a portrait aspect ratio. Probably my mistake but it would have been helpful to have known in advance.
I make a lot of videos of myself playing trumpet and other instruments for my instagram account. I take this really seriously and I wanted to start taking my sound quality really seriously too. I’m a rising Sophomore in college, music ed major, and I know that for my quickly growing instagram and video competitions like NTC, I could no longer use just my iPhone’s mic. This is so easy to set up, I’m not tech savvy at all and I had zero problems. I love how you can rotate the mic and it has a really well made case for when you’re done using it. It seriously is so easy and convenient. That’s one of the main reasons I love it, it’s just plug in and go…no wires, no heavy stuff, no complicated programs! Here is a short clip that shows dynamics, range, etc. and just how well the mic handles it. Granted, I just got the mic today so this is the automatic setting, no mic gain or compressor adjusted yet. I was about 1 foot away from the mic, trumpet bell facing right at it.
This is far and away the best mic I have used on my iPhone X. It has been used to record interviews and podcast episodes in the field. It feels of solid quality and the sound quality has been great. The MOTIV Audio app has some great and easy to understand info on how to set up your mic for different recording situations. I did purchase a 6′ lightning extension cable so I could put my phone in my pocket and hold the mic in my hand while walking and recording. If you will be recording on the move and or don’t want to hold you phone all the time while recording then I highly recommend this. I also purchased different microphone windscreen. The one that is included is a little bulky for what I wanted. This mic also has a nice little zippered carry case to protect your mic when not in use. I highly recommend this mic for anyone wanting to capture get sound recording on their iOS in all settings!
Back in the analogue days when Shure made Phono cartridges I was a big fan of the brand and tried most of their V15 models, as well as a few others, in my SME tone arm. Shure were also known for their professional microphones as well so I was interested to see that they were now producing products for the digital age with this MV88+ being an advanced AV kit for some Apple and Android devices. At the best part of two hundred pounds currently from Amazon the Shure MV88+ is a premium device that comes with a comprehensive selection of accessories included in the kit. There is the tripod (a Manfrotto PIXI mini) plus various mounts, clamps, clips, cables and a neoprene storage bag, and as the device is Apple MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) Certified it should work trouble-free with any iOS device. On the negative side when you have the Lightning cable connected you can’t also connect an external power bank, but there are some combined battery/phone-case products that do offer this facility so that may be an option for extended use. The Shure MV88+ is not really a replacement for conventional video camcorder but it offers a lot of convenience and features at a price that compares well against the traditional alternative. Designed for musicians on the go, vloggers, YouTube contributors and the like this is a handy device for modern AV recording that offers a lot for the price — others may be cheaper but probably not as good.
Just great. I spent a year for the best microphone in a reasonable price and finally made it. This is it.
Many phones have excellent cameras in them, but they are sorely let down by very poor microphones. This offering from Shure turns your phone into a high-end portable recording and filming unit.
This is a very good microphone, but you need to be sure it will work with your android phone. It doesn’t work with all of them.
This is a powered mic, running in a kind of phantom power method over USB, and so it won’t work as a passive mic. You need some sort of power supply to the mic to get it to work, which means it needs an android phone that will supply power out from it’s USB port. If you have a USB-C connected phone you should be fine, but I have a fairly old Android phone from an obscure manufacturer with a micro-USB connection and it isn’t directly supported by this mic. However, if your phone supports OTG charging then I think you can be reasonably sure it will work with this mic by using a Micro USB to USB OTG cable as an adaptor between your phone and the supplied mic cables. This worked very well for me and gave me full functionality.
It’s not advertised, but this mic also works quite happily with Windows 10 on a PC. You won’t get the functionality of the app, but it is immediately recognised by windows. It would be great if Shure were to fully support this with an PC app.
So, that’s enough of the technical side of things, what’s it like in use? It’s great. For journalists, musicians, filmakers, streamers, podcasters, vloggers or even students recording lectures, it’s absoleutly ideal.
Sound quality is extremely good, as you would expect from Shure, with a rich crisp ‘radio’ sound to vocals. The app has lots of DSP functionality, and you can change the behaviour of the mic from cardiod, stereo and so on to suit your needs. There are the usual gain and EQ controls you would expect, as well as a high pass filter, compressor, limiter… basically a mini-recording studio in your phone. If you’re a bit overwhelmed with all this there are pre-sets for recording voice, music, and so on to make life easier. The mic is a bit sensitive to handling noise, but not excessivly, just make sure the leads don’t touch the phone or microphone and you’re good. The included deadcat does an excellent job as a wind noise screen and a pop guard. Monitoring is done through headphones or you can just eyeball the levels on the app. Wonderfully, the headphones plug directly in the mic, not your phone, so you monitor directly from the source. This is as wysiwyg (wyhiwyg?) as it gets and is very reassuring that your getting what you thing you’re getting. You can even adjust the monitor mix between playback and the mic.
The included mini-tripod is a great bonus too. This is a high quality manfrotto and doubles as both a stand or a mini-monopod. Using this virtually eliminates the little handling noise there is.
The app doesn’t cancel out your phone from being a phone though, and incoming phonecalls and notifications will ruin your recordings. The app thoughtfully reminds you to go into Aeroplane mode, but doesn’t do it for you. It’s a good idea to do this though, as there is no way to charge the phone while using the mic so it saves battery life.
Ease of use is great. Plug it all in, fire up the app, and off you go. Everything comes in a neoprene toolroll style bag which is a bit too big to fit in a pocket, but is highly portable. Shame it’s not a brighter colour to find in your bag, but oh well. There is plenty of room to fit other leads and odds and ends in there too.
This is a relatively expensive mic, but the price is comparable to a decent sound recorder. I’m finding myself using it a lot. The very high quality and functionality of both the mic and the app, coupled with its high portability means it’s likely to be on hand when I find something I want to record and keep. If you work with audio in anyway, then this should definitely be on your to-buy list.
This is a useful microphone, which attaches to a phone, allowing you excellent video and sound. This has a very stable base, which feels solid and secure. There is a pouch, but will fit in everything, apart from the base. It is a little let down by the clip, which you can fit your phone into — the product description suggests you could use a tablet with this, but I can’t see how that will work, as the clip is too small. The microphone has good sound and I could fit my phone in easily, but the clip is plastic and quite bendable. Over time, this might break and, considering the build quality of the other parts, that is a shame.
The box contains details of what is in the box: microphone, windscreen, tripod, phone clam and mic clip, roll-up bag, lightning cable and USB-C cable. I couldn’t find an instruction booklet, and it says one-touch setup, but I would have thought — for the price — some basic instructions should have been included. There is a user guide available on the company website so, should you need some help to use this, it is best to look there.
This has lots of users. Great for vloggers, podcasters and musicians. I have used this at work, where we regularly record students who are making presentations, etc. The sound quality is much better and I am impressed with this. I am not sure whether I am just being stupid, but I really cannot see how you can use this with a tablet and, other than the fact that the clip is a weak spot, and there are no instructions, it works well and is easy to use.
This is by far the most advanced sound solution I’ve tried and I have to say that I’m suitably impressed! It should satisfy the requirements of most vloggers, podcasters, interviewers, amateur film makers or musicians
The box contains the microphone itself which has a headphone jack for monitoring audio and a USB connector plug. There is a USB C cable for Androids and a lightening cable for iPhones
A tripod that is well made and will help shoot stable videos. It has a nice adjustable phone mount which should fit about any phone you’d want to place there. The microphone sits at the top over the phone and if required it also comes with a windscreen for the microphone.
Furthermore there is a roll-up case cover to keep all the above items safe and organised.
All the above items are relevant and useful and I’m happy that there isn’t a lot of extra things that will distract more than help.
The app is very good and offers a large number of options for editing/adjusting the sound to be exactly right.
There are a number of different modes of using the microphone:
– Selfie
– Field (e.g. if you’re at a conference and need both sound and video)
– Bidirectional (e.g. interview or podcast where the side microphones are in use for two speakers rather than the main front microphone)
– Video (e.g. a concert or otherwise “normal” filming).
I’m in no way a specialist, but I’m very excited about the quality and opportunities for use of this kit and although it’s rather pricey, I’m happy to give it full marks just because it really is very good
The microphone comes in a roll pouch with a connecting cable for modern Apple devices and another one for Android devices with USB-C at the phone end of the cable (check their website for a list of supported Android devices).
My Sony Xperia X10 on Android 9 and Xperia XA2 on Android 8 worked first time with the ‘MOTIV Audio’ and ‘MOTIV Video’ apps.
Note: with the microphone connected audio playback is via the headphone outlet on the microphone.
The ‘MOTIV Video’ app is described as being in beta.
The ‘MOTIV Video’ app records video and with my phones in up to 4K using either front or rear camera (front camera of course not 4K). Neither phones I tested will playback 4K in the app but the default Sony video app installed does (HD modes play in the MOTIV Video app with no problem).
The audio recorded quality is very good (as you would expect) and no buzzes or hums are picked up from the phones (so far) and the app seems to offer the same audio features the audio app has seems to offer the same audio features as the audio only app (including reversing left and right channels).
My outdoor test were okay except for the dreaded wind noise and it was not even what I would describe as windy.
I see for the MV88 and MV88+ Shure offer an optional cover, ” Shure AMV88-FUR Microphone Windjammer for MV88″ which should help.
You can of course make changes in the app to try and reduce the low frequency response to try and fix wind noise.
Indoors using the provided tripod (the one provided I already owned) it all works very well.
The app also at least with my phones does not seem to offer image stabilisation so you may have great sound but rather shaky video.
Although I generally use a separate Panasonic video camera, I also have an iPhone SE and an older iPad Pro which I occasionally use for pictures and video. I am not (yet) a vlogger or U tuber. With the continuing improvements in video quality from iPhones and iPads there is a temptation to rely on these lightweight devices when travelling. Sound is frequently the poor relation, often ignored , which will make or break a video however.
So for this product — out of the box we have a nifty Manfrotto mini tripod ( rebranded Shure) and a nice folder package containing the Sure stereo microphone ( with windshield) , its support holder, a plastic (adjustable) phone holder ( not as flimsy as some have suggested) , a USB to USB C mini cable and a USB to iPhone/iPad lightning cable. There are guarantee and safety warning leaflets but sadly NO form of instructions as to how to use or details of the online App (You can use the microphone with or without the App!). You can also monitor the sound with headphones if they fit the minijack socket on the microphone.
Putting aside the lack of instructions (set up is not quite as simple as they think) when it is working is the sound with the microphone better than the onboard microphones? I was hoping that the fact that it is wind shielded and stereo justify the price (mono microphones are available on Amazon significantly lower prices.).
Test site 1 — garden with birds singing in trees both sides of the garden — slight wind (not me)
a) iPad
Sound quality — Enhanced sound compared to the onboard mike
Stereo effect — detectable when boards singing across the garden
b) iPhone SE
Sound quality — As for iPad
Stereo effect — As for iPad
Test site 2 — Inside — simple narration to device , in house sounds
a) iPad
Sound quality — Great for narration — gives a more solid sound compared to the iPad onboard mike — even without the app . When recording general sounds (TV on) — mike was very similar to the onboard mike. (This is playback through the iPad speakers!!)
b) iPhone SE
Sound quality — As for iPad
Note — the iPad recognised the app had not been downloaded and gave the option to immediately download — I initially tested without the app then checked — there are two apps — one simply for the microphone and the other integrating the video with the sound control.
So, overall a good package , albeit at a price.
The world’s most famous mic manufacturer has teamed up with the world’s most famous tripod maker to bring you the Shure MV88 + mic stand combo. First off, it’s not as easy to set up as the absence of instructions would suggest. My partner had a go first and gave up on it, not realising that the iPhone’s on board speaker is disabled when the cable is connected and sound can only be monitored and played back through headphones as long as the lightning cable is left plugged in. That hiccup aside we both love it. It has the rich, crunchy sound you would expect from a reporter’s mic but its stereo capability also makes it ideal for recording music. The App is not essential but makes for a slightly superior interface to what comes with most sound recorders. The tripod has a really smooth action but this and the mic have three bits that need screwing together in between shooting, and the grip could be more ergonomic considering you’ll most likely use the tripod as a monopod most of the time. Overall, this is a pretty important piece of equipment for the vlogger or YouTuber who wants to produce professional recordings. It cuts down considerably on wind noise outside and indoors it has a richer, more contained sound ideal for presentation. Above all, this is really high quality device that’s probably worth its price tag. I’ve no doubt there are cheaper brands more competitively priced but there is nothing about this that feels significantly wrong.
Very pleased with the mic. Is as advertised. The software works very well. A good product.
Used for mainly for recording live music (rock, blues, folk) concerts and home instrumental and vocal recordings, not tried for purely classical concerts yet, although my last recording is of a rock band with full orchestral accompaniment. This is the type of item were you certainly “get what you pay for” having tried cheaper alternatives, the Shure MV88 is head and shoulders above the rest, as you might expect from the Shure brand. Once you have mastered the mobile phone app (I use the iOS app on iPhone 6s+ and iPad Pro 9.7″) which is worth taking some time over as the various setting are for very different recording environments and recording targets.
Monitoring through headphones whilst recording can be a bit hit or miss with connection (sometimes works straight away sometimes not?) but I’m not sure whether that is due to the app or my iPhone, but whether monitored or not the recordings are accurate, crisp and clear with a very good frequency range and response, with little to no extraneous noise, even though the microphone is highly sensitive.
Microphone gain is adjustable up to 36dB boost, as are other settings, microphone setup (there are actually 3 mics within the head) stereo width, compression, limiter, high pass filter, equaliser, wind reduction and left/right swap, with 5 recording environment presets. This microphone only works with Apple products fitted with a “lightning connector” and cannot easily be used if iPhone or iPad is in a case that restricts access to the lightning connector. Overall I am quite happy with this compact microphone.
Obviously, your iPhone mic sucks. That’s a given. You want to record podcasts, or lectures, or even a tune you fiddled around with on your guitar, but you want to send it to friends and it sounds grainy. You won’t have this problem with the Shure MV88.
With this handy tool, your voice will no longer sound like an embarrassment that makes you consider playing mute when talking to a Tinder date. It’s incredibly portable, links straight to your phone or iPad the second you plug it in, and your device will automatically default to the mic for voice memos, video, and many other 3rd party apps, without you having to sync it or download additional software.
I added to Shure app to my phone just for additional accessibility, but it is not necessary.
So buy this mic, add it to your studio collection, throw it in a backpack, and secretly record your friends conversations for party favors that will never end (besides ending your relationships). Make music, happy people!
Excellent little microphone which captures sound superbly. Good app too!
So here’s the bottom line. You are paying for the mic itself, which is great. However the phone clip is incredibly cheap (it’s why they lost a star) and will probably break after few uses. Why they went to the trouble for a great mic and mini tripod and then skimped out on the phone clip is a huge head scratch. Now is this worth $250? No. You can build you own system for much cheaper with the MV88 or another mic like the Rode or the BOYA mics and get the similar results. Hopefully they will update the mic clip to a metal one. Then, just then, maybe, this will be worth the money.
Great mic
Doesn’t work with “voice memo” though which is a shame.
I was immediately impressed by the quality of recordings I can get with this little mic. The only downside is that I have to take my iPhone out of (slim) case to use it. I wish they included an extender or adapter or something so that I could keep my phone in its case.
It’s only happened to me a couple of times, but it stopped recording when my phone went to sleep. I’m not sure if this is an app bug, an iOS bug, or a hardware bug. In any case, I’m a bit paranoid about checking to see if the recording is still working when using this mic.
I so much want to give this 5 stars for the sound quality, but the other two issues prevent it. (I’m keeping it… good enough for my use case!)
Excelentes vdeos! Excelente audio!
Buen micrfono.
The sound quality and pick up range with this mic is really good – would recommend. I’ve shot inside using it so far so can’t vouch for outdoor shoots.
Excellent quality. Already tried and sold a Zoom version, this is much better.
Very good sound quality and lots of settings to choose.
I do quite a bit of studio recording and needed a high quality portable device, and this is great. Very solid build quality, great pop-shield and strong protective carry case. The audio quality is very good. On a direct comparison, recording using the iphone mic, then using the MV88, the quality difference is stark. The MV88 is studio quality, the iphone mic sounds poor. Be aware that you’re not going to hear much difference if listening to your recordings through the iphone speaker, but once you put on a decent pair of headphones the quality difference is obvious. The MV88 has a tiny bit of hiss when on full gain and recording quiet sounds, but way less than from just the iphone mic, and that’s completely to be expected and probably in-audible to many ears. Its only once you go up to more expensive mics / pre-amps etc… that you get the next stage of quality. The app is also very good. All in all – very happy.
This is one of the best accessories for a musicians iphone! Great quality recordings that can be downloaded to youtube with a sense of pride!
The quality of sound reproduction is outstanding and the set up is very easy and intuitive. You can vary the angle of sound which the mic takes in, you can increase the mic volume a lot. There’s various equalisation sliders for those wanting to colour the recording. Used it on an ipad, it’s tiny and by far the most convenient method of doing a quick on the spot recording there is. There is absolutely no background noise when you crank it up and no distortion in replaying music recorded which has large changes in dynamics. You can immediately divide a recording up into sections afterwards, and saving and sharing files is a doddle. You can fast forward and back with the slide of a finger on the screen. I am extremely fussy about sound and know how difficult it is to get a decent recording of classical piano, which is what I use it for; it’s really outstanding for this (although of course not the same as a thousand pound mic and recording desk!); even recording a string quartet from the back of the room gave really good sound. Thoroughly recommend
Couldnt ask for any better from amazon
Arrived safely and for Christmas prizzie
Thanks again amazo
Xoxo
Update 16Oct2021 – iPhone Xs Max in 2018 finally introduced stereo mics. The MV88 is still superior in frequency response and doesn’t require the always-on compression in the iPhone.
I modified a 2021 Spigen Ultra Hybrid case with an X-acto knife to clear the MV88 (see photo). It was possible to leave intact the top edge over the Lightning connector–unlike some cases with an open area there
to I’ve used the MV88 for live music performance video recording in stereo, with a handheld iPhone 6s Plus since Dec2015. As of 04Jul2017 there is no competition for this application. As a musician and software engineer coding audio signal processing, I’ve found the sound quality to be excellent. Amazing lows and clear, extended natural highs vs. mics like the Zoom iQ7 and the old Tascam iM2. Amazon apparently doesn’t allow external links, but google “youtube electric eye lucky strike” should yield two videos of the same performance, with audio from the Zoom iQ7 vs. the MV88.
There are other great stereo mics from Shure and Rode, but they’re significantly bulkier and heavier—impractical for handheld video. And there is no contest vs the mono, overload prone built-in iPhone mics—optimized for noise cancellation and monaural voice, rather than stereo live music. You may burst out laughing hearing recordings with the MV88 for the first time. Commenters saying there is little or no difference—maybe are listening on the iPhone speaker? Headphones, external speakers, are the real test.
The MOTIV app is easy to use. Documentation is a joy—clear and detailed, often answering not just how, but why. Its Band preset works amazingly well for rock concerts—just a touch of compression and limiting, to the point i’ve never heard distortion on live performances, other than traceable to overloaded mixer/monitor/amps in the original performance. Even on video of Motley Crue’s Final Tour 31Dec2015, the explosions weren’t distorted (google youtube motley crue antera77, at 27:42)
The highly elegant pivot and twist system for the stereo mics gives correctly oriented stereo audio for landscape mode (“horizontal”) video. Mics like the Rode iXYL and the apparently abandoned Blue Mikey Digital Lightning (Blue’s website as of 04Jul2017 touts iOS 7 compatibility—a version introduced Sep2013) require portrait mode for this—rendering them essentially useless for landscape mode video. The jewel-like, all metal construction screams quality, vs. plasticy, deformed Mickey Mouse ears looking mics like the Zoom iQ7.
Suggested improvements, 0-10 scale, 10 being highest priority/cost:
10/10: Recording level indication on the mic – add two or three green LED level meters to the single MV88 “Communication Established” LED.
My biggest disappointments have involved not knowing audio levels while recording video. Excellent workaround has been an iOS video app like Filmic Pro with on-screen audio level meters. Apple’s default Camera app has none—suggestion to Apple: Make audio level meters a Preferences-selectable option! Much less elegant workaround: carry earbuds or headphones to the live show to monitor the audio. Earbuds are hard to hear in a live music setting, and more bulk and kit to lose and fuss with—especially with iPhone 7 and newer needing an adapter for headphones.
The $100 Zoom iQ7 Lightning mic has three LED level meters, so they’re likely cost-effective.
4/10: “Turn Airplane Mode On When MV88 detected” option in the Shure MOTIV app
I’ve come home to interference-riddled audio several times, because I forgot to turn Airplane Mode on. No reliable way to tell if interference is occurring while taking video, even with an audio level meter-equipped video app like Filmic Pro.
You wouldn’t want Airplane Mode automatic:
* not clear that iOS would allow this
* some would like to do live streaming, and/or to take calls while recording even if it interrupts the video app
3/10: Improve software system reliability in establishing MV88 communication
I don’t know if this is practical. But I’ve had big disappointments from not paying attention to the MV88 green LED. Not noticing the serial data connection wasn’t established meant the horrible, built in mono iPhone mic took over, or worse, no audio. Even using an audio level meter equipped app like Filmic Pro, sometimes I haven’t noticed if the on-screen audio meters were showing stereo vs. mono, or no audio. Apparently it’s fairly common even with the MV88 plugged into the Lightning connector, that a serial data connection is not established. Understandable given several systems have to interact perfectly:
* mechanical Lightning connection
* three software systems—iOS, video app, Shure MOTIV app
The ideal live music recorder would be a dedicated video camera and permanently attached stereo mic and integrated software. It may be that Shure has already maximized communication reliability, given the constraints of integrating with the iPhone hardware and software.
1/10: Add RFID—MV88 is so tiny, it’s easy to lose!
A passive 916MHz RFID tag would add an insignificant $0.15 (in volume as of 2006) to the $150 cost. You’ve got the radio hardware to sent out RFID signals right there on the iPhone. Most practical would be just a response—tells you the MV88 is in the room somewhere at least, vs. lost at the gig. GPS chips and a beeper in the MV88 would be nice, but almost certainly not cost effective. Source: wikipedia RFID.
——
I’d like to address the remainder of this review to errors in the review “Not $150 worth of mic, just ok.
By Amazon Customer #99 on March 7, 2017”, as these are common misunderstandings that could dissuade many from making an excellent choice in the MV88:
“Bottom line: It’s good but, frustratingly, not $150 goodZoom makes oneat least as good forless.”
I disagree completely. Superior performance, build quality and features are well worth $150 vs competition like the $100 Zoom iQ7. This is generally echoed by the majority of other reviews here.
” “It’s fine for speech and podcasts and YouTube videos, but not really good enough for a musician. It is noticeably noisy (hissy)”
For conversations, and live music performances at least, avoiding distortion and overload, is far more important than background hiss—a comparative non-issue. As a musician and audio engineer, I’ve found the MV88 audio excellent—extended bass and highs, and if there’s any distortion, it’s been from overdriven mixers/monitors/amps in the original performance. On quiet passages, audience noise has been more an issue than background hiss.
From Shure:
“The MV88 was designed primarily to record loud sounds, like a rock concert, or medium sounds, such as conversation. As the sounds gets softer and/or the MV88 is placed farther away from the sound source, at some point the self-noise (hiss level) of the MV88 might become noticeable or objectionableThe MV88 does not have an exceptionally low noise floor like a Shure KSM44A (4 dB SPL-A), however the KSM44A is nearly seven times the price. If the requirement is to record very soft bird sounds in a forest, or the barely audible whispers of wind in the trees, the MV88 may not be appropriate.” (google Shure Customer Help MV88 recording soft sounds)
Further, the biggest source of background hiss is presets with Compression on, rather than quiescent mic capsule noise. Turning it off or using Flat preset in the MOTIV app will help. Just be careful to set recording levels low enough to prevent overload.
“even when the phone is in airplane mode.”
Airplane mode being off, and microphone signal-to-noise performance are two different noise sources. Airplane mode turns off the iPhone cellular/Bluetooth/wifi radio frequency transmit and receive, which can cause static and other intermittent noise at audio frequencies. This has nothing to do with steady background hiss from the MV88 ADC and mic capsules’ combined signal to noise ratio.
” It has weak midrange and bass response”
Compared to what? I’ve found the MV88 to have excellent bass response vs other Lightning connector mics like the iQ7. Shure’s User Guide lists response as 20-20kHz. Its frequency response graph shows a gentle rolloff below 300Hz but no dip in the midrange:
(From Shure MV88 User Guide – Specifications)
You may be comparing the MV88 to a mic with artificially boosted midrange and bass.
” although it’s tweakable in the MOTIV app up to a point.”
Indeed it is, with the MOTIV 5-band graphic EQ:
(From Shure MV88 User Guide – The ShurePlus MOTIV App – Mic setup)
“It is heavy and cumbersome unless you hold the phoneon a tripod.”
Maybe if you’re a leprechaun. The MV88 mass is 40.5g vs. your favored Zoom iQ7 at 30.5g. Using the MV88 handheld for shooting live music performances with my 192g iPhone 6s Plus and approx 24g Incase Halo Snap case increases the mass as a unit by about 20%. Or the mass vs. using the iQ7 by about 4.1%.
(192+24+41)/(192+24).
(192+24+41)/(192+24+31)
Claiming a 4% increase in mass would push an iPhone-plus-mic into tripod territory is baffling.
“It won’t work with many cases”
It fits Apple, and some Incase cases. Making sure your case provides clearance around the Lightning connector is a reasonable tradeoff to get the excellent MV88 features. Shure also addresses this:
(google Shure Customer Help MV88 use with a phone case)
“Alesis and Rode make better ones.”
As of Jul2017:
* The RODE iXY-L orients its stereo mics incorrectly for landscape mode video. This can outweigh possibly better sound
* Alesis lists no mics on its website
“It’s an improvement over built in DAC/mic but not a huge improvement.”
DAC (digital to analog conversion) is irrelevant to an analog audio source like a microphone. You might be thinking of analog to digital conversion (ADC).
“An iPhone really needs a full outboard DAC to record decently. This seems to share”
You seem to be suggesting the MV88 relies on an iPhone internal digital to analog converter (DAC). If so, this is false.
Again, digital to analog conversion—outboard or otherwise—is irrelevant to an analog audio source like a microphone. You might be thinking of analog to digital conversion (ADC). This is necessarily done by the MV88, since the iPhone Lightning connector has no analog data signals. It only has pins for a serial digital data stream. That is, the MV88 indeed has an ADC “outboard” from the iPhone.

Very good mike. Easy to use and excellent control with app. Sound quality is amazing.
I love this mic. The design is solid and it allows me to capture great sound when I record audio or video. But… the mic I got had what sounded like a short in the recordings… a loud pop followed by a serious of less loud pops. The signal was not peaking either. It was past my return deadline for Amazon so I contacted Shure and they were great about replacing it quickly. They accidentally sent me 2 replacement mics and I’m glad they did. one of the replacement mics had the same problem as the mic I sent them. One did not. I kept the one that worked well and sent back the other one. Once again, I love this mic but if 2 out of 3 of the mics I tried had issues, then that represents a serious problem in manufacturing. I hope Shure handles this issue. I generally like and recommend this brand.
Great sound quality! Bought as a gift for my girl friend and she likes it so much!
Very nice, feels well built and produces much better sound than the iPhone 7 internal mic. Does it produce excellent sound like a larger Rode? Well, no but then you can’t expect it to when you compare sizes. It is fairly easy to use with the Shure app installed on your phone but do remember to turn your phone onto airplane mode or you will get cellular signal noise on each and every sound recording you make. I use it with iMovie or just record sound using the iPhone native sound app – it’s dead easy to export recordings into iMovie when you’re done. I did read in other reviews about some compatibility issues with third party apps but I don’t use them so can’t comment.
Really good quality sound though.
The Shure MV88 iOS is a digital stereo condenser microphone. It is compatible with devices running iOS 8.0 or higher such as iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices with lightning connectors. The top of the device rotates for flexible positioning that supports multiple recording angles
The Shure MV88 has multiple presets which allow for specific gain and stereo widths for different situations. The device also allows the user to choose from 4 different polar patterns which determine how the mic captures sound around it. This unit comes with the microphone, a windscreen, and a case. We go over all of the items that come with the device and explain how they should be used in the video review.
I recommend this device to anyone who is looking to record video using an iOS device. It definitely provides you with improved audio over that of the internal microphone on your iOS device.
Excellent product! Entirely meets my expectations. Shure have a reputation to sustain and this product certainly adds to it!
Full marks.A bit steeply priced.
Astounding sound from any mic especially a lightning mic. I used this mic to record our large church choir’s and orchestra’s Christmas cantata and the results were truly impressive. I am an audiophile and I know when music is properly recorded. This mic performs perfectly on my iPhone 6s+. I set the mic and iPhone up using Shure’s Motiv app and then record in either the Rode Rec or Alon app. Once you select the microphone settings in Motiv those settings are stored internally in the iPhones audio circuits and are used by any app you subsequently record in. That is very nice. The purpose in using the MV88 in this way is that it avails you of the added greater recording flexibility that Rode Rec and Alon offers in addition to what Motiv gives you. By the way all this information was given to me by a Shure tech rep and confirmed by me in use.. The principal advantage in this approach is that it allows you to bypass Motiv’s limited mic gain when recording low volume sound among other things. I then edit recordings in Audacity for amazing results.
As others have said plug in the MV88 last after headphones since the iPhone recognizes as active what was plugged in last. Some have also mentioned that twisting the capsule clockwise or counter-clockwise is very hard. Go ahead and twist, per the manual, it is a very solid mic.
The microphone quality is quite good. Useful features in the dedicated app include the ability to control gain, change polar patterns and use compression. I like the fact that you can use it while recording video. The only reason that it didn’t get 5 stars is the fact that your battery will deplete from full to nothing in 75mins (iPhone 6s, whilst using video). Unfortunately there is no way to charge the phone whilst recording. For this price tag I would have liked to have the option of external power.
This is a really well made and cool little mic. Having researched the options, the Shure MV88 came up best of the bunch. The Software is also really useful which is what gave it the edge over a couple of otherwise desirable options. It is easy to use, quick to set up and gives plenty of “ready to go” choices for recording different environments. There is also a choice of Compressor and Limiter and EQ!
I expect best results will be achieved by placing the device in a cradle or tripod to avoid recording rustles and bustles ! I have some pretty amazing mics in my studio but this little mic is a great addition, especially for quickly recording ideas, songwriting etc plus numerous uses outside the studio, including recording live performances. The quality of recordings I’ve done with Guitars etc is surprisingly good! It comes in a cute carry case with windshield and extension cable for headphones.
You can record at 4.14 or 48Khz and up to 24 bit which is great. Exporting the wav audio can be done in a variety of ways, so far I have found emailing it to myself or to my Dropbox account the best options.
Also this Mic can be used when recording video on your iPhone or iPad which combined with the camera improvements in recent Apple devices is a bonus!
All together, I’m very pleased with this purchase
I tried the Rode video mic me first and got terrible interference crackling while streaming live video, this little mic is much more expensive but has been completely flawless. If you are a Mobile Journalist streaming from events or news stories, this is the one to have. It uses the lighting connector on the iPhone and the quality is perfect.
This is an excellent product for improving the sound recorded via an iPhone device. You do need to download a free app to go with it, but once downloaded the device is essentially plug and play.
One note – when I was doing YouTube live video streaming with the iPhone 5s, we did find that we had to turn the phone off and back on to get the mic to activate. I am not sure if that was an issue with the mic and the streaming software … or what the issue was.
For shooting videos, recording voice or any other purpose, once you have the associated Shure app, you literally plug it in and record.
I am really impressed with this mic. I teach journalists to shoot video on iPhones and also do some podcasting. This could be useful for both. It prompts you to download the Motiv app, so you can control the microphone pick-up pattern. This means you can make it better suited for recording music or voice. The processor, limiter and other settings allow you to sound more like a radio presenter than the tinny sound you get from the in-built iPhone microphone. It is very sensitive to wind outside so a fluffy mic shield may be a good idea. It comes with a foam one, but I don’t think that is enough for strong wind. I’ve added a video so you can check out the quality.
This is a really versatile mic, although may be a bit much for a casual user. Anyone who appreciates recording live stereo at 24bit on their iPhone will likely appreciate this mic’s capabilities – and results.
