I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 and seen many reviews that this microphone coupled with a good pair of headphones like mine are a very good combination, and they are. Microphone sounds a lot better compared to my Razer headset.
Good quality overall, easy to use, clear voice and useful sound control.
Ideal for PS4 users – easy to use and high quality
Excellent attachment for a Sony MX 1000 M3 for use of gaming
What can i see about this mic, well, it’s clear, very clear in fact it’s better than my go to Sennheiser Game One mic.
Now there is a bit of a few downsides to this, the first is that there is no noise cancellation, so it will pick up a lot background noises & static, however there is a fix for that & it is to activate any noise suppression feature. I personally recommend Nvidia RTX Voice if you can install it.
The mute feature is also a strange one. When i hit mute, my voice still shows as coming through, but nothing is picked up on playback. This was tested on Xbox chat with my friend who noticed this oddity & didn’t hear my voice either, but could see i was speaking.
If you’re fine with the above minor issues, then i fully recommend this mic and as for the headset, look no further than the Philips SHP9500. A great headset with superb sound imaging. You won’t be disappointed with this superb combo.
Neat design, I was worried the microphone boom would move away from my mouth in use, but it does not. The recording levels can be a little low but the volume is fine to trigger in an event in VoiceAttack. No loss of audio quality on the 1000’s. Recommended.
I bought this for use with my Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones as the mic on these Sony headphones is terrible. This set plugs into the headphones perfectly with the mic boom positioned just where you need it. The quality of this set is fantastic, the cable is the braided kind and never kinks, the plugs are high quality and the volume and mute controls work flawlessly.
I use this headset plugged into my PC for gaming, for work and with my mobile phone. For gaming, this setup is far superior than other dedicated gaming headsets that I have tried.
Highly recommended and a bargain and the RRP.
Bought this so I could use my Sony wh900 xb headphones for gaming. Works perfectly and the audio quality is really good so I have been told. Finally have all in one headphones now that I can use for music or gaming
Really good quality, works well and my mates can hear me clearly when playing online.
I bought this after my modmic failed after a couple of years of use and I wish i’d done so sooner. Sound quality is better than the modmic 2 that I had, from others i’ve heard it’s on par with the new modmic uni but literally half the price.
Massive pro is only needing to manage one cable vs the modmic having two cables to manage. Only downside is your headset needs to have a detachable 3.5mm cable to use this whereas the modmic is universal. I like how I can completely remove the mic if I want to take my headphones out of the house with me now, with the modmic I would always have the base stuck to my headphones and i’d need to unclip all the wires.
Great investment if it’s compatible with your headset. Highly recommended
Bought the V-MODA BoomPro Microphone to use with my Xbox and Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones, it work fantastically with the headphones and sounds very clear on the other end, my only very slight negative is that it picks up your breathing very easily but moving away from mouth and nose sorts this out.
Very pleased and would highly recommend if wanting to use your own headphones.
Super simple and nice mic, plugs directly into my headphones, has a splitter cable into headphones and mic, plug them in, done! The sound quality is fairly decent to other people. As it’s a 3.5mm connection it can swiveling quite far from you face. The cable is covered, so feels nice not being plastic.
Just what I needed , have to use in conjunction with W 2.5 adapter for my Bose over ear headphones but does the job
Fantastic sound quality. Really surprised. This has allowed me to use a microphone with my Sony MX4’s.
Great mic sound quality and overall build quality is very well too. Would love it better if there is better noise cancellation especially on reducing the keyboard noise. And at this price it should comes with a pop filter!
Really good microphone to use with a Phillips Fidelio X2HR. Sound output is clear and voice communication is clear through the microphone as well. Mute button included as well. However, I have given it 4 stars as the volume control can mess with the headphones and turning the volume up can make one side louder than the other. There is a level where both are the same noise level so i guess this isn’t a massive issue but just a bit annoying when changing volume.
For some reason, Sony doesn’t support their flagship headphone range (albeit an older pair) for use with the PlayStation 4, so I was searching for a solution to use the headphones I invested in as a gaming headset. Step forward the BoomPro. The headset attachment fits well with the headphones, contrary to other reviews. The 3.5mm port on the headphones is capable of easily holding it in place. The cable has an in-line mute switch, volume wheel and lapel clip. The end of the cable simply plugs into your controller and you’re good to go. I’ve used it on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 with great results. The microphone is very sensitive so it’s a good idea to get a cheap pop filter and to adjust your microphone level via software. Product seems durable. Absolutely recommended!
I love my Audio-Technica M50xBT headphones, I got them after about 3 years of owning the original wired M50x’s, and was really excited when they added a Bluetooth version. One thing I always wanted to do with my original M50x’s though was gaming, with a boom mic like a headset for chat, as I never really liked most “gaming headsets” and didn’t see the point in having a second set of headphones like that when I like my M50s so much and they sound good with so many different audio types whether it be music, movies or games. Unfortunately though because of the proprietary cable it uses, the only solution I could find was something like an Antlion Modmic. That leaves you with 2 cables and 2 plugs to deal with, and a very long cable coming from the ModMic, and since I mostly play on console I would have to adapt them to 1 TRRS 4 pole headset jack to go into my controller anyway. Far from elegant. So when I found out the M50X BTs have a 3.5mm jack for wired audio, I was super excited! I could use this V-Moda Boompro. And what a pairing! The plug is slim enough to fit the recessed jack on the headphones and I like the 45 or so angled plug on the end that goes to your PC/controller better than both straight plugs and right-angle plugs. The cord itself feels very premium too, and the mute/volume module is in a good spot along the cord to reach by feel. Also like the clip on the back of that module to clip it to my shirt and take some of the weight off, and to keep any tugs on the cable from affecting the connection to the headphones. The sound quality into the headphones is unchanged, sounds just as good as the included cable, and the mic quality is crystal clear! Lots of compliments from others when testing it in a chat party. There is no pop filter, but P and B and S etc. sounds don’t seem to be a problem, plus it keeps the mic nice and slim. The boom is nice and flexible, but stays where you put it too. Overall very happy with this accessory, and it’s become indispensable in my gaming setup! Oh, it of course also comes with a splitter to go to separate mic and headphone jacks for the PC Master Race peeps.
This was recommended to me as a mic replacement for the HyperX Orbit S — and sure enough, if you plug it into the AUX socket on the headset, it works fine. In standard 2Ch stereo mode.
This isn’t good enough.
The Orbit requires a USB connection in order to function in the hardware-driven High-Res or 8Ch 3D modes. For this, it has a dedicated 3.5mm microphone port — however the BoomPro only functions when plugged into the AUX port, which overrides/turns off the USB connection, thus disabling the very features that I shelled out a premium on the headset for.
It’s a shame, because the mic quality really is very good… but not like this. Returning.
I’m amazed by this product. I’ve tried multiple microphones, including top brands like Jabra, and these ones are better on the voice quality. In the only aspect that top brands might be better, is in the microphone’s noise-cancelling. I’ve tested with some background noise, like typing in the keyboard or my daughter speaking around 2 meters away, and this noise is captured clearly unfortunately. So, if you don’t mind this, then you won’t regret to buy this at all. On the other hand, if you work or play video-games with constant noise in the background, then think twice. I’ve tried this mic on multiple headsets with 3.5mm and it works perfectly fine. I’ve used Amazon Chime, Google Hangout and regular calls on my phone (Samsung S9) and it works perfectly.
Great sound and overall good product with the one flaw being the cable. While it’s braided and durable it has a tendency to coil itself. So every time you pick your headphones up you have to uncoil it. I assume this is due to the way the fabric is woven but its very annoying.
Hopefully a further iteration can fix this.
Excellent quality product. Long braided cable, mic open/closed switch with lapel clip. Bought as a mic attachment for my Sony MX-1000-M3 headphones to play on PS4. Works a treat. Clear mic quality. Worth the investment even though a little on the expensive side.
Cable is thick, clip is fat and bulky.
Unless you position the mic perfectly, it picks up your breathing noise. Could use a bit of foam to protect from “wind”
However, sound quality is fine and much better then most “gaming headsets”, therefore, 4 starts.
I never liked the idea of a modmic so I went for a more all In one solution, the sound quality on this microphone can not be found on any gaming headsets. This turns most headphones provided they have a 3.5mm jack into a superb gaming headset. Very durable bit of tech and hasn’t shown any signs of needing to be replaced after a long period of use.
Previously I was using the Antlion Modmic’s and they were always breaking but I liked them and at the time didn’t know an alternative for Gaming with headphones, so I kept buying them, bought 3 over 4 yeas as even with taking care of them they would fray and break due to their design! But not this Mic! It’s amazing! Just plug it into your headphones and boom you’re done, gaming headphones, I use SHP9500’s and they work like a dream together, for 28 you can’t go wrong!!
Amazing product! Used with my X2HR and fits perfectly.
Bought for friend for gaming, no complaints. Seems happy so that’s all I can say.
The biggest debate since Playstation vs Xbox, Call of Duty vs Battlefield, or House Stark vs House Lannister.
Which is better, V-Moda or ModMic? Well, as a user of both, it really is just about splitting hairs.
The ModMic offers a plethora accessories that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them, but that you do pay for, an additional 20 in fact.
That aside, that really is the only difference, and if there is any difference in sound quality, it really is negligible.
Personally, I use the V-Moda with the Sony Wh-1000xm3 Headphones, and I must say, it’s the best headset I have ever owned, in my opinion.
Best mic I’ve ever used, crisp (although all I’ve used prior were ‘gaming headsets’)
I use it for conferencing in noisy environment. Coupled with software noise cancelling does a good job, none complaining anymore of noise from my line.
This is a great idea for turning a great pair of headphones (e.g. Sony WH1000-XM3s) into a brilliant gaming headset.
The best headphones for audio often don’t have an inline mic (or only support the built-in mic when in wireless handsfree mode, which disables high-fidelity audio codecs). This product solves that and gives you a nice sensitive, clear boom mic. Yes you’re stuck with a wire, but that’s a small price to pay for audio and noise cancelling that beats any gaming headset.
No issues whatsoever. I had feedback from friends playing my ps4 that the audio was alot clearer. No connection issues and audio quality for hearing in game sounds is amazing!
Works great, surprisingly good mic quality. Only “gaming” headset mic that comes close are the higher end Sennheiser ones. Most others, even expensive ones, are garbage compared to this.
A fantastic microphone for the money. Add it to a good pair of headphones like the Phillips SHP-9500 and you’ll have a much better headset than most 200 headsets on sale.
The mic is extremely clear. Not too trebbly, and has good lowend and depth to it. The only downside is it can pickup more background noise than I’d have wished for. It also doesn’t come with a boom pop filter.
The mute switch and volume slider is nice and works well. The cable is great quality, a braided black cable which is fairly thin and unobtrusive. Don’t let that put you off, it feels that it will last the test of time.
I had to use the provided splitter for it to work on my PC so be cautious. It wouldn’t work on the my PC IO with the single 3.5mm jack. I put the splitter into 1 mic input and 1 audio input on my internal soundcard to work.
Sound quality to the headphones is completely unaffected which is a huge plus.
All in all a great and clever little device
Does what it says, love the design and voice clarity. If it was under 20 quid then definitely a must buy for gamers! I use it with my MH751and its great 😀
Much better than my old g430’s. Just make sure your headphones are compatible.
I was using the corsair void pro wireless for gaming and got a new pair of Sony WH-1000xm3’s for music.
I loved my new Sony’s and ended up researching how I could use its mic when playing games, I discovered this wasn’t really practical.
I then asked reddit for a solution, and was recommended this product.
This is the perfect solution, audio is crisp and clear and everything works as expected.
A tip for buyers would be to look up how to play back the mic output through your headphones through windows sound controller.
Great Microphone!
love the sound quality and its very loud compared to its competitors on amazon.
Essential kit for online calls – flexible portable and good quality finish
No need for bulky, RGB blah blah gaming headphones. You can turn your headphones into gaming headphones in a blink of a second just plug it in and you’re good to go, clear sound, volume control and mute mic on the wire and it is compatible with lots of headphones
Been using this mic for the last 3ish years its great but not that durable. I use mine every day and am on my 2nd one now. The cable twists very easily
Wouldn’t say it’s Perfect but super high quality and worth the money.
Love this mic. Very high quality and works perfectly with Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones and Dolby Atmos for Headphones on Xbox One. I noticed one reviewer mention the connector isn’t great with the XM2s but the newer versions suit it just fine.
Can use with any head phones that have a detachable cable and turn them into a gaming headse
Works with any headset with a 3.5mm jack. The cable is very long and is like a shoe lace (what’s that type called again?). The only problem is I have yet to buy AND keep a really good pair of headphones that work great for music, TV and gaming.
The last one I tried was Fidelio X2
exactly what I was looking for, quality is very good.
First- Why I bought this.
I was tired of my GAMING headsets breaking. 3 units all from the same manufacturer and all breaking around the same time frame out of warranty.
Have to love contrived durability and how this is a legal practice.
I have spent as much as 150 Cnd dollars on these units out of loyalty to this manufacturer.
After my third headset in 7 to 8 years years I have decided to change this blind loyalty purchasing.
Why am I spending so much on the integrated headsets and mic? Because they have the word GAMING? Yes.
Well I am not buying it any more. Literally.
I almost bought the another modular mic set. But after watching some reviews and listening to the videos and how they sounded I thought for 1/3 of the price I will try the V-moda.
I use Voice Over Internet Protocol every day.
Based on feed back from 7 other VOIP users the sound quality is superior to my other Gaming Headset unit. With comments like, It sounds like you are in the room with me and that sounds just like you should sound.
I used the money saved in my GAMING HEADSET pot to purchase a Philips SHP9500S to go with this mic(Very highly reviewed entry audiophile headphones. Not from Amazon as it was 50 dollars more expensive than newegg.
The plan is if either of the two items fail, I only have to replace ONE of the Two items. Not both. Saving me money in the long run.
Not purchasing a gaming headset and purchasing higher quality headphones I am getting better overall sound as well. Quite a noticeable jump in sound quality.
The Mute and volume work as expected.
With one unexpected plus with the mute switch not being detected by my VOIP software, many of the other GAMING headsets cause the software to PING loudly or crackle up in volume as the mic comes back on line. This unit does not. Plus for V-Moda mute function.
Two issues with the V-moda.
The supplied cable is WAY too short for a desktop solution. This needs to be rectified by the manufacturer in my opinion in the next iteration of the unit. I would guess this might be designed for a laptop solution where you are close enough for this short cable to work.
I have had to source and purchase a 4 pole-3.5mm cable extension. So that needs to be accounted for in the cost. This than puts it at closer to 50% cheaper then the other unit and not the 1/3 as previously stated.
Second issue I have is the V-moda plugs into the headphones using a 3.5mm circular jack, It can and does spin from your optimal mic position.
It needs some sort of system to stabilizer the mic position. This is not a huge issue but it is a problem.
These two issues are why the V-moda lost a star.
Summary and recommendation
Over all the price and superior microphone quality of the V-moda makes me very happy. I do recommend this solution if you are tired of the GAMING moniker solutionscost and want quality and choice in a headphones and microphones.
Having tried more gaming headsets than I’d like to admit and being so very disappointed with the quality of the mic’s, I was skeptical that this paired with my Sennheiser 598’s would be any better. I could not be more wrong!
I stream games using OBS, and for every headset I’ve tried I’ve had to add suppression, gain and noise gate filters. Only one of the headsets I tried it actually worked on. But even then I was not happy. One of my main problems is I am a “nasal gamer” (as I like to call it) so all mics pick up my breathing in a bad way lol.
So onto this mic, WOW! First off, I was able to completely remove all filters on OBS. Didn’t need any suppression or noise gate to block unwanted sounds. This mic only picks up me. The sound is super clear, and it actually makes my voice sound like I would expect to here it. I can even move the mic well away from my mouth and it’s still loud and clear. I cannot stress how clear this mic is. Their is no breathing, no static, no background noise. Truly awesome. The box says professional grade mic… it sure feels it!
The stork is my next favourite feature. It is extremely flexible. You bend it, and it stays. Very nice. My only worry is whether this rigidness stays over time. We will see.
The control unit works well. It has a volume dial and a mute switch and a clip on the back to attach it to clothes. One criticism here though is I think that unit is too big. Many others have the same functionality in a lot smaller unit. It could be stuff that makes this thing so awesome and clear though is housed in there so I’m not grumbling. It doesn’t get in the way so its fine.
The braided cable is nice and long and comes with a nice quality cable tie. Useful as I use a game controller so I don’t have to have miles of cable all over.
In the box is an adapter to convert the 3.5 jack into a headphone and mic jack for those that prefer to plug directly into their computer sockets. All jacks appear gold so looks quality to me.
I was mildy disappointed that a mic this good let itself down a little by not coming with a pop filter, but I bought a pack of 10 mini’s off Amazon anyway for a fiver so at least I have spares.
Final verdict, this mic is the business! If you are struggling to find a boom mic style gaming headset, make your own. Having tried so many different high end gaming headsets, I’m confident I now have the perfect headset… Sennheiser 598SR + V-MODA BoomPro Microphone.
It’s a great mic, I used it with my Beats Studio.
Have been using this for a year and a half, very good quality. Much better than headset mics.
Works as described. Only got this as an interim until I bought a new headset but pretty much just sticking with this. If you already own good headphone that have a change able cable and want something to work with PS4 and XBone then definitely recommend this. Would like the option for the cable to be a tad shorter.
Great microphone. The sound quality is great and having a clip on it is a nice feature. There is one downside to it, at least with my set, there’s a bit of noise when you move around and the cable rubs against you clothes, but it’s not that noticeable while gaming.
Super quick delivery, actually arrived on a Sunday which was nice. Mic is super clear and fits nicely into my Crossfade LP2’s
As a non-gamer, I bought this for video voice overs, skype, podcasting and for use with my video camera. Now, I think this won’t work with my DSLR or Canon Vixia video camera, because they require a “line level” input from a powered microphone such as the Vid-Pro lavalier microphone sold on Amazon, which takes a button cell battery and has a tiny amplifier in it.
Cons:
The 1/8″ Y cable that comes with this is terrible. It plugs in very tight, and will never come out. But it feels permanent, once plugged in, and barely comes back out. I felt like I might break the cable trying to remove the 2 little 90 degree plugs from my computer. I would suggest buying a new headset microphone adapter Y cable, for $5 on Amazon that has straight plugs. The cord is nice and braided which feels nice, but it does create a little bit of noise when you brush it against a zipper on a sweater or coat. Not a big deal. The microphone picks up a very slight echo speaking into my custom cubicle style work desk, unless I turn it so the microphone holes are facing up and down, which completely removes any echo. The microphone won’t work with my Scarlett preamp designed for large professional microphones.
Pros:
This V-Moda microphone sounds more clear and accurate than a professional XM8500 stage microphone I recently purchased, which sounds very dense, muffled and muddy in comparison to the V-Moda microphone. After seeing how tiny the V-Moda was, holding it in my hand, I was extremely skeptical that it could reproduce the Human voice properly without seriously distorting the frequency and tone like many other tiny non-powered microphones or cheap headset microphones.
Well, the V-Moda BoomPro is not an ordinary cheap microphone. It was engineered by real sound engineers, because it blocks background sound better than my $100 studio microphone, and sounds almost as clear. The V-Moda is more a bass and mid range microphone, picking up the lows very well, without picking up the really low lows that cause distortion and muddiness. It seems to have just the right frequency response for picking up the Human voice. It does not pick up the ultra low rumbling frequencies or the ultra high shrill background noises. Somehow, the itty-bitty tiny little microphone that is nearly invisible, it records big booming sound, and reproduces my speaking voice with clarity and authority.
The V-Moda is worth every penny, because it is as good as advertised.
Observations and Technical Breakdown:
The V-Moda doesn’t reproduce the Human voice accurately. None of the microphones I’ve ever used sound totally natural. Microphones convert your voice into an electronic signal, so there will always be some kind of coloration of the tone of your voice, music recorded in the background, etc. The V-Moda is a little bit heavy in the low mid range area, and a little light in the high end frequency spectrum. It’s designed intentionally this way to prevent background noise and to prevent shrill unnecessary high pitched sounds from being picked up by the microphone. I am perfectly happy with the sound tone of the V-Moda for Skype calls and phone calls, as it’s nearly perfect. Using default settings, the V-Moda sounds more clear and less muddy than my Behringer XM8500 microphone, which was pretty shocking considering the size difference. I’ve heard many small microphones that sound so muffled and terrible that they are mostly useless .The V-Moda sounds very similar to my inexpensive studio microphone, an AKG P120 condenser microphone, which uses 48 volts and a preamp, a Scarlett 2i2 2nd generation.
For video voice over work, the V-Moda is too mid-bass heavy for my taste. Surprisingly the V-Moda microphone seems to automatically block out frequencies below 100hz, preventing any heavy bass noises from ruining the sound. But if you want your voice to sound absolutely natural, you’ll need to do some editing in a sound editor or use some kind of an equalizer. This is for people who are using this to make professional recordings. Now, again I was skeptical that this microphone could be good enough to make a professional recording. But indeed it can. You will need to do a little editing. I’ll tell you how I was able to do it.
First, you’ll need a new computer sound card. Unless you you have a really good internal sound card in your computer, or a professional recording studio, you might get too much line noise from the cheap internal microphone port on your laptop or computer. Every computer is different. However, my laptop and my PC computer both have a lot of line noise when I use a microphone on the factory microphone input jack. I tried using the V-Moda on a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card and there was absolutely no audible line noise or hissing. This is called signal to noise ratio. Add-on sound cards that you purchase separately may be better than the internal sound card, so if you get line noise, I would recommend either buying a Sound Blaster Audigy (Open your computer and check for open PCI & PCI express slots). They make PCI or PCI Express sound cards. Or you can get a USB sound card. I found a really good PCI sound card that also doubles as a professional headphone amplifier. It’s called the ASUS Xonar DG 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card. You can get it here on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2AVdJQm
This ASUS DG sound card is designed for headsets, it has a very high signal strength so it doesn’t have any line noise, and it has a built in amplifier to power expensive headphones. People report a noticeable improvement using this sound card with headphones. The ASUS DG sound card actually has an adjustable output for different types of headphones, so it can work with cheap headphones or professional 600 ohm headphones which usually require an expensive external headphone amplifier. You can configure it for different headphone OHM ratings. I’ve never seen this feature on any other sound cards, especially internal factory sound cards.
Sound Editing:
Back to the V-Moda microphone. What makes a good microphone good is it’s ability to maintain the information being recorded. If you lose certain frequencies or distort the voice too much, you cannot use sound editing to fix the sound. No amount of editing can fix a bad microphone, because the sound is lost before it gets recorded. The V-Moda handles sound editing extremely well. Again, I was shocked. It’s not as good as my AKG P120, but it’s close enough after editing, that no normal person would ever notice a difference. The V-Moda does cut off a lot of the high frequencies and it does boost some of the low-mids, naturally, due to its design. You won’t be able to magically recreate the missing high frequency sounds, but for voice recordings, that’s perfectly fine and even desired in most situations. High frequency sounds are rarely desired in voice recordings, and the most popular radio broadcast microphones today have a sound tone that is very similar to this V-Moda microphone, with muted treble.
The V-Moda does’t have an absolutely accurate sound tone, it sounds a little bit amplified in the mid bass area, but with some sound equalizer adjustments in a sound editor program, you can make the tone sound more natural, just by reducing some of the mid bass. If you just get a free program like Audacity, then you can record your voice, then edit the sound using the built in equalizer to get the exact sound you want. I am convinced that the V-Moda records with enough quality that you can safely edit the sound recording without losing a significant amount of the audio integrity.
In conclusion:
The V-Moda sounds slightly muted, slightly muffled, and slightly boosted in the lower-mid bass region. But it appears to be perfectly tailored to picking up the Human voice, and blocking out things happening in the background. It’s obviously a very carefully engineered microphone, and is shockingly good for the price. Unlike other microphones which sound wretched and painful to the ears, this V-Moda microphone has a very smooth, very warm sound tone, that is very clear. I am so happy to know that engineers actually engineered this microphone, unlike 99% of the other microphones out there in this price range which appear to be random accidents, and have no ability to recreate the Human voice.
You’ll need sound editing to remove some of the mid-bass in order to make this microphone record more accurately, but with some sound editing, I think you can make this microphone sound good enough that you won’t need to ever buy a more expensive professional grade microphone. I would consider this a professional microphone for home users and hobbyists. If you need something better than this, than I would suggest getting a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM57 with an extra heavy duty gray foam wind sock, a Shure SM7, or an AKG D5. Then you’ll need a preamp like a Scarlett 2i2 USB, and a 15 foot XLR microphone cable. If you need super fine sensitivty and detail, then purchase a 48 volt powered condenser microphone like the AKG P120, and a microphone stand with a boom arm on it, then you can hear a pin drop, literally.
You’ll want to buy a Sound Blaster Audigy or the ASUS DG sound card if you are using a PC computer, if you hear too much white noise in the background in your recordings. Start first by turning down the gain, and looking for updated drivers for your factory sound card.
Edit: 11/23/2017
I received my Asus Xonar DG sound card for my 5 year old motherboard with a PCI slot on Windows 7. The sound card microphone input jack used with the V-Moda BoomPro is absolutely crystal clear, without a trace of any line noise or white noise. This V-Moda microphone sounds even better now, more natural sounding, and even more clear. I am shocked at how much better a $30 sound card can make the microphone sound. If you are having sound issues or having too much line noise, or not enough gain, try getting a new sound card.
V-Moda vs. Golden Age Project D2 microphone. I bought a new dynamic professional microphone and tested it against the V-Moda yesterday. The Golden Age Project D2 sounds much worse than then V-Moda BoomPro. The same for the XM8500, which sounds much worse, but better than the D2. Again, I am so surprised. The D2 microphone was $150, but it sounds like you are speaking into a plastic bucket, compared to the natural clarity of the V-Moda. The V-Moda so far, sounds better than 2 other non-powered microphones I’ve tried which are far more expensive. The ASUS sound card is not perfect, it has caused my computer to lock up a few times with a blue screen, if I try to use my Scarlett Focusrite at the same time, to record multiple devices at the same time. It also takes a moment to begin recording when you engage the sound card, because it has to charge up the capacitors. The Asus sound card software allows you to do realtime “EQ” adjustment of your microphone input, and it sounds excellent, with an improvement in the high frequency response of the Vmoda mic, which, for the price of the sound card ($30) is truly amazing. With the treble turned up, the Vmoda sounds even more clear and crisp.
Conclusion: Get a new computer sound card, and don’t worry about buying a professional condenser or studio microphone. Get the V-Moda.
Pros:
Fit and sits nice inside a monoprice headset.
Great audio
Really long protected cable
Flexible yet it’s no flimsy like you’d expect.
Cons
Controller is a little plasticky.
Remarkable sound quality from this mic considering its price. Works seamlessly with my V-MODA Crossfade M100 headphones on both PS4 and PC. Fantastic quality and would definitely recommend this product.
have two of these one at work and one at home as I prefer my sennheiser headphones over any gaming headset I’ve tried.
mic is really good without picking up too much of the back-ground noise and mute button is always nice to have.
I also like how the include the splutter, so you can use it out of the box with laptops, tablets and desktops without any issues.
great sound quality and a fair price, love that you have a mute slider and a volume slider as well!
I dont like the look of normal gaming headsets, so what I did was using a very good headset made for music, then attached this microphone to it, works like a charm
It works as described, the sound quality if much better than in most headsets (if not all).
However, the microphone cable is a bit too fragile, so keep that in mind when deciding to buy this.
surprised on how clear my voice is and I can also use my headset!? prefec
Wanted to use my AKG headphones while gaming and waned a good quality mic. I was very impressed with the audio quality from the mic much better than most gaming headsets. The audio is clear and the mic ads a depth to the sound you will fail to get from other boom mics. The mic it self is very light and does not add much to the weight of the headset. The in line mute and volume is a blessing its self. The only complaint would be the cable length. I do wish this was longer, nothing that couldn’t be fixed with an extension cable. For the price i think this is the best bang for buck upgrade for any headphone. This is a great upgrade for any headphone.
V – Moda BoomPro Microphone for computer games / Internet telephony , Black
Pros:
Great Mic for speaking on discord or other VoIP programmes.
Turns your headphones into a better headset than your current gaming ones.
Clarity is amazing.
Volume is amazing.
Ease of setup.
Cons:
I received a faulty product when first ordered, but amazon were quick to replace it. The problem is that it was picking up my speaker sound and also giving me a lot of static. The volume was so low that discord was having difficulties picking it up even with mic boost at +20dB. It was really frustrating because it was hard to determine whether it was a faulty mic or just bad setting in windows so I had to spend 2 days messing with my computer before concluding it was the mic. I’m glad I did figure it out and now the replacement sounds great!
So for those of you reading this:
If you hear static and the recording volume is low, chances are you have a faulty product and you should ask for a replacement. Make sure you do some tests with an external sound card to see if the low volume problem persists and it still picks up your headphone sound (basically streaming what you hear) before making a replacement order though.
Hope this is helpful!
The microphone is crystal clear, however it is disappointing because it doesn’t have controls for your music. So I hardly use it.
I was sceptical purchasing this product given the price with others half of this product however with the mod mic being the only alternative at double the price with the disadvantage of an additional cable I thought I would give this a shot.
1. Cable quality — Excellent, a decent braided cable with an inline remote (mute and volume) which sits around chest height which although looks bulky is reasonable light.
2. Cable length — For some this may be too long but it’s of a good length if using at a desk. It’ll reach the back of your computer with plenty of slack.
3. Sound quality — Mic quality is good, some background noise but only in close vicinity i.e. keyboard. No loss of audio quality.
I spent a lot of time looking at different gaming headsets. The mic quality on many of them are questionable, but the biggest problem was the high cost. It is hard to justify paying hundreds of pounds on a gaming headset; especially when they all use cables that are physically connected to the headphones (so if the cable snaps, they need to be binned).
The beauty of the BoomPro mic is that they can be used with any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm headphone jack. This means you can convert your favourite headphones into a gaming headset. This makes much more sense to me as most gaming headsets are either too big, are bad for listening to music, or just too expensive. With the BoomPro you can get the best of both worlds.
The microphone quality is very good. It is more than good enough for playing games with friends or live streaming. I use my V Moda headphones when working at my computer and then simply take out the regular audio cable and insert the boom pro when I am playing games.
Check out my video review for more information as to what you get in the box and how the mic sounds 🙂
This is the ideal mic as opposed to buying a headset. Honestly this is one of the best quality microphones I’ve had. On top of that the clip and cable quality have still lasted all this time for me.
It is still lasting through pulls, tugs and all other types neglect.
These are great! A bit pricey but definetley worth spending the extra . Especially if you’ve got a decent set of headphones and like playing games
Pro’s:7
Really nice quality. Work straight out of the box and have had no problems with them.
Cons:
My team mates get to listen to me again 😀
The quality on the microphone is superb – on par or greater to many headsets I’ve tried. There is more bass to this microphone than others, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing; recordings are super clear.
There was originally some static, however this was resolved by disabling the AMD HDMI Audio drivers. Not all issues are hardware!
You will need a pair of headphones with a 3.5mm port, myself using the V-MODA M100 Crossfades however they will work with other brands too. I highly recommend this solution over the popular Mod Mic – less cables, higher quality. All I simply do is plug the top into my headphones, then plug the 4-pin jack into the included splitter (for computer use, phones and tablets would support a all in one 4-pin) to plug in the headphone and microphone ports of my computer.
Originally having the microphone to the side was a tad bit annoying while not-gaming. You can turn the microphone around to not be in your vision, or simply switch out the cable, else you’ll get used to it quickly and forget it’s there. The arm holding the microphone stays in place and doesn’t feel flimsy. Having the microphone itself detachable would make this product absolutely perfect.
The reason for 4 stars is that unlike other V-MODA products, the materials used aren’t super-high quality, although they do the job. If you’ve owned a pair of V-MODA headphones, you know the quality of the cables. While this is decent, it isn’t as good. Likewise the box with volume control/mute works but feels lower-cost than the rest of the product. I don’t fear this breaking, only that it could be made from a nicer material. However, this is acceptable as it keeps the cost of the high-quality microphone down, although it wouldn’t break the bank.
I’ll try to be brief… As someone else wrote, this feels like a decent “version 1” attempt. It’s good in some ways and significantly annoying in others. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could. 3 feels mean, 4 feels too generous.
Pros:
One of few comparable items on the market. Probably the best on offer.
Has mute and volume control. Though I actually would have preferred it didn’t.
Mic seems to work well.
Braided cable! Tangle-free and non-catchy.
Cons:
Cost. This thing costs more than I paid for a Plantronics RIG headset with USB mixer which I picked up in a sale and more than the Logitech USB headset I sometimes use which was not bought in a sale. It ought to be half the price I paid (mid-way between 20 and 30 quid).
The clip. It shouldn’t be there, or it should be less bulky. It rests nicely near your shoulder, so it isn’t hard to locate. But if I don’t use the clip, it constantly catches on my clothes and pulls the headset off my head. If I use it, I forget to unclip it when I take the headset off. Both outcomes are annoying.
The mic boom is too flimsy. It’s really thin and doesn’t feel durable. Perhaps it is, but I am worried about it. It’s easy to knock it and end up bending it away from where you want it.
Its a really nice microphone. Great alternative for Antlion’s Modmics since it doesn’t bring another cable into the play. The mic mute on the knob doesn’t work properly and the knob is way too close to the microphone so it gets easily stuck on my shirt and chair. Voice quality doesn’t change much from the HyperX Cloud headset mic, or that’s what my friends told me on TeamSpeak/Discord.
All in all, its a great microphone for headphones with a removable cord and a 3.5mm jack. I personally use the microphone with Fidelio X2 headphones and it works brilliantly with them.
Good microphone and the cable is also very good too. I’m using a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter to plug this in to my m50x headphones.
Had this for years now, still works. The cable has outlasted the controllers (thanks to conceding 90th minute goals on fifa)
I’ve been shopping around for a replacement cord for my Razer Electra as 1) Razer no longer makes replacement cords (if they ever did in the first place, as I’ve never actually seen any case where anyone was able to buy one), and 2) the inline mic on the Electra was okay at best. The cord could lock into position in one of two ways: facing towards the user, and facing away from the user. If you weren’t paying close attention, this was a pain the behind, as it sounds to other users like you’re in another room.
Thankfully the Electra uses a standard TRS 3.5mm jack on the headset itself, which opens up options to replace the cable. Since the Electra cables twist and lock into place, though, whatever replacement needed to have a fairly thin jacket/sleeve on the jack so as to not be obstructed by the lock mechanism.
The V-MODA BoomPro fits without a hitch.
In addition to having a well-placed boom, I now have volume control and a mute switch, both of which were sorely missed. I actually use my headset for conference calls and listening to music rather than gaming, so being able to mute/unmute quickly is a blessing. Sound quality is about the same as the standard Razer cord, but the cord’s a bit longer (by about a foot), so now I have a bit more room to move. The braided cord is nice, though I kinda miss the silicone used in the Razer cord. It’d be nice to have a microphone button for Android and/or iPhone, but I don’t use this with either, so it’s fine. In the product image for the BoomPro, it looks like the plug has a twist/lock design. This made me a little apprehensive to buy this, as I figured it wouldn’t be the same as the Electra’s, but the actual product doesn’t have this lock design. It’s just a plain plug. While this was most likely helpful for me, it does show a discrepancy between V-MODAs picture and the actual product itself.
Breakdown:
PROS:
+ Solid build quality
+ Volume control and mute switch
+ Boom mic is in a good position
+ Cord length/strength is near-perfect
+ IT WORKS WITH THE RAZER ELECTRA
CONS:
– Price is a bit high
– While the product image shows a twist/lock design on the plug, it’s not present on the actual product
– Cord doesn’t twist/lock into place (wasn’t designed to, though)
– No included boom cover for pop stopping (I’m clearly reaching a bit, here)
OVERALL:
I’d give it a 4.7/5, but since we’re dealing with whole numbers here, I’ll round it to 5/5. It’s good. And since it’s one of the only options for the Razer Electra, it’s darn near perfect.
UPDATE (1/20/17):
I’ve since been using this with my Status Audio CB-1 cans Status Audio CB-1 Closed Back Studio Monitor Headphones and this works out even better than it does with my Razer Electra. The recess for the cord on the left headphone cup is more pronounced on the CB-1s, so the adapter sinks in a bit further. What does this mean in the long run? The BoomPro ends up holding in place as if it were locked. That was one of the more annoying parts of using this with the Electras: the adapter would rotate freely. It was kinda like a “feature,” as I could swing it away from my face when I didn’t need to talk, but the stem on the mic itself is plenty flexible. The BoomPro still doesn’t actually twist-and-lock in place, but it does hold its position. I DID have to use a bit more effort to get the BoomPro in the recess, and it DID leave a little groove on the microphone stem (I’ll add pictures later), but the plug stays in place really well. I’ve only ever had it come loose once, and it was a pretty decent tug.
So I’d say I’d bump this thing up from a 4.7/5 to a 4.8/5, but I can’t do that as we’re still dealing with whole numbers. Oh well.
The sound quality of this microphone is astounding, when compared to even high-end headsets. The microphone boom is surprisingly thin and it feels even flimsy at first when compared to common headsets. Despite this, it keeps the microphone in place and does not seem to degrade with time, so do not be worried about it. The in-cable volume adjustment simply works as expected, nothing surprising there for the better or the worse.
Highly worth it.
This product is what every gamer or even non-gamers need if they want to use a microphone with their quality headphones. It truly turns any headphones with a 3.5mm (or even 2.5mm if you can mod it, which I will explain more about) into the best headset ever.
First off, if you do use something like the mod-mic, you’re sticking something onto the headphones, it will be a mess if you want to take it off and clean all the gunk off. Plus it adds two cords that dangle and get snagged on everything beside you or under your computer chair or something extra to trip on, just annoying. This thing adds a microphone but also keeps everything to one high quality braided cord.
Secondly, this thing sounds amazing. I mean that in both ways, the voice on the mic sounds great and no loss of quality on the headphones. Like, legit, it sounds super clear. V-MODA did a great job in designing this for quality and practicality. How nobody else has made something like this yet that sounds this good is beyond me. It has a mute toggle and volume scroll on the line, which is awesome. The mic is so easily adjustable, feels like it would be annoying and flop down a lot because of how easy it moves, but it really doesn’t.
They also made it so you can plug it into your phone or anything that uses a 3.5mm jack that can use mic and headset or just headset. Or you can put that single 3.5mm jack into the included splitter for computer use. They pretty much thought of everything.
Now, as other reviewers have said, I got this for my Sennheiser 558 headphones (it also works for the 598 and 518 the same way.) So because they use 2.5mm, I had to buy a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (I got it on amazon, just get a 3 pack as some don’t work right and cut out sound, if none work, send it back and try again) and you have to open the headphones up and remove the little black locking mechanism out so you can plug the adapter in it. I used a tiny piece of gorilla tape to make the adapter a little larger so it fits in snug without ever falling out.
Also, they include a 1 year warranty. I’m a V-MODA fan now. Next set of headphones I get will be V-MODA.
If you’re debating on getting this, don’t. Just do it, it’s best thing you will ever do for your headphones.
Pros:
– Great sound quality
– Single cord so no worry to have to cable manage it
– In line mic mute and volume wheel
– Can just spin the mic around if you don’t want it near your face, no need to flip it up or anything.
– Can use in phone/music player with mic or on computer with included splitter
– Easily detach it if you want to plug another cord in.
– If the cord does get caught on something while you get up or are moving around, it will simply just unplug out of your headphones instead of potentially damaging the headset or cord
– Bends any way you’d like super easy but holds to it’s shape
– 1 year warranty
Cons:
– I truly can’t think of a downside to this
Apologies for the flash in the pictures, I did this review pretty late at night. Shows the little 2.5mm to 3.5 adapter with it.
Only had it a couple of weeks, but seems to work well, though I see knock volume a little. I brought these to work with some Sony headphones, which unfortunately have a narrow access to jack so needed a Ultra-Slim extender ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016E5PEXC ) which still works well
Does the job well, however the headset side of the connector has too much plastic – requires some DYI in order to fit in most headphones, didn’t fit into any of my 3 sony’s (770, 1abt, 1a). Still probably the best option you can found if you like your quality headphones, but you need a decent microphone too. Using it primarily in the office for meetings on skype, gives a much better sound quality then the one comes with my sony mdr-1a
Cable is maybe a bit too long, however for some that might be important.
Sound quality is really clear. No one is complaining about the background noise, no static noise. Perfect for the mic which has a flexible adjustment itself. It would be great if the volume adjustment is less easy to turn when accidentally grabbed it. Had to taped it to avoid adjusting volume by accident. In addition, I wish the controller can be abit less bulky and less heavy. Braided cable makes sound when rub against my hoodie’s zipper.
It would be a huge improvement if V-MODA agrees to my feedback!
Excellent compliment the Philips SHP9500 headphones I bought at the same time
I’ve got this microphone back in 2014 and it’s still going strong.
It is very well built and what’s the most important sound quality is extremely sharp, I have never had any complaints about background noise even though my computer is just like few inches away.
It is basically plug and play microphone, there is no need of setting up any software or drivers, it is really as easy as that: just plug in and use it straight away. It has small control panel, makes it easy to adjust sound levels and of course when needed muting your microphone.
Cable itself feels quite nice and doesn’t often get twisted (especially comparing to my apple earphones…).
Having microphone next to your mouth can be advantageous to one who is not able to speak loudly or is surrounded by people. As mentioned before voice quality is crisp and clear, and another great thing is that it will fit to basically any headphones. If you have audiophile headphones which didn’t come with build in microphone, this is the best way to transform it.
I have been extremely satisfied with this microphone and I would definitely recommend it. It could be a great solution in many different scenarious, from gaming to more professional related use.
Definitely highly recommended!
Reasonable-good quality mic, awesome as a replacement wire too. As it looks. But a wee bit pricey.
bought it for my V-Modas M-100 to use it with PS4 and it works just great… Love the quality of the product…
Using this with Philips Fidelio x1. Mic is great, sound to the headphones is great.
Working with no problems for over a year now. Fantastic.
I’m writing this review as an update because i notice most of the other reviews seem to be a little old and didn’t really address the questions i needed answered before I purchased. after hours of research, i still felt like i was taking a risk by buying this, so here goes my attempt to help some people before buying it:
First and foremost, I purchased these to use on an XBOX ONE with my brand new BEATS PRO HEADPHONES that i bought a few days ago at a black friday sale. I have BOTH microphone adapters for my controllers, that is to say, I have the adapters with and without the keyboard. I figured since my Samsung Galaxy headphones worked great, a pair of Beats would be even better. i was wrong. I was sorely disappointed to find that the original microphone cable would not transmit the sound of my voice, and it felt like i had just wasted a few hundred bucks. Especially after i asked around at best buy and the associates told me that beats headphones wouldn’t work with anything besides a Beats brand cable. That seemed odd, so i did more research of my own… which brings me to the meat and potatoes of my review.
after viewing a few videos on YouTube, i stumbled upon this cable. Let me tell you right out the gate that IT WORKS PERFECTLY WITH MY BEATS AS IS. the quality is actually much better than I had even anticipated and I didn’t even need to buy any extra adapters. Just plug and play. that’s why I’m giving it 5 stars. Definitely worth the 30 dollar investment to make good use of a set of headphones you already have instead of buying another set of Two or Three hundred dollar headphones to achieve the very same quality.
Now that we’ve got that settled, I’d like to address some questions I had that i couldn’t find an answer to. Here’s what I found for those of you who may be wondering the same things (Please keep in mind, this my experience with BEATS PRO. outcome may vary depending on whatever headphones you’re looking to augment with this microphone:)
The Y cable that youtube and amazon recommend you purchase alongside this microphone is NOT NECESSARY because it plugs into the xbox controller perfectly even without it. The microphone is built with a regular jack that has the THREE BANDS on it, just like the microphone that came with my Samsung Galaxy. I should also note that it comes with a Y cable that converts the jack for use with a computer or anything else that might need that sort of thing.
Something else that was recommended to purchase alongside this microphone is an adapter for the jack that plugs into the headsets themselves. it’s supposed to convert the TWO BAND jack into one with THREE BANDS. This is also NOT NECESSARY. I bought the adapter and tested the microphone with and without it.Turns out the headphones worked perfectly with and without the adapter. there was no real sound difference that I could notice, so it seems to just be a waste of 5 bucks for me. whatever though, better safe than sorry when it comes to these things.
As for sound quality, this cable seems to be just as good as the original Beats brand cable that came with the headphones themselves. I’m super impressed with these, and I hope this review helps somebody looking to convert their beats into an awesome pair of gaming headphones.
Good value for money. Glad that I finally found a reliable microphone with decent voice quality which did not stop working after a few months.
This is recommended for gaming and speaking to people online.
Does exactly what you’d hope. Adds a clearer voice and the convience of a bendable microphone to your already great V-Moda headphones.
The cable is plenty long and just a durable as the original cables, the microphone itself doesn’t add lob sided weight and is quite robust. The arm of the cable is stiff yet malleable so it conforms to most desirable shapes and has the length to reach almost anywhere around your mouth(those with a big head need not worry). Basically does everything you could ask and is a steal for the price.
great boom mic clear and does what it says on the box
I brought this mic for my xbox one as u already had the headphones and after 6 months of use I would recommend them to anyone. Just remember you still need the mic adapter for your controller.
exactly what you’d expect. much better than buying a separate headset.
Very simple to use and ideal if you have headphones like Sennheisers that have a 3.5mm socket.
I was looking for headphones that worked with both xbox and playstation but I couldn’t find any. I came across the microphone as I already had the headphones and it works. Great for music and if you need a head set for gaming
Stops your POLK 4shots from echoing in a party. Perfect!
Xbox one gamers this is a MUST purchase and the best add on i ha e managed to pick up so far.
I was sick and tired of using TB headphones and the standard ones supplied. Either too many wires, charging batteries and hassle overall.
Then I had a vision 🙂 what if I could use my over ear headphones that cost me a bomb with xbox one ? I purchased the official xbox one adapter / converter then picked up my BOOOM MIC.
One day I might use DRE Headphones. The next my studio AKGs.
What do u need ?
Any headset that allows you to plug in a new audio lead. Example: Beats Mixx headphones allow you to disconnect the read audio cable with mic. You plug the Boom mic into your head set, you then plug the other end into your xbox one controller.
10/10. Mic / game chat / game audio.
Also the Xbox one adapter is great to watch movies in bed.
issue there is with the product is that the kinks in the cable are almost impossible to get rid of and it would be nice if the mic jack had a way to stop swivelling when plugged into my m-100 as it is annoying when in the middle of a fast paced game. for this reason i am reluctant to use it on the go….the build quality is amazing until you look at the inline control…but as a gamer its a nice add-on for the m-100 and aesthetically pleasing even down to the small gem like style of the mic piece.
It’s great to find a boom mic at all these days, and this one is good. It’s designed for the V-Moda M100s, primarily, but I’ve found it works with M80s and even Philips Fidelio L2s. Check the female jack socket on your headphones for compatibility if they’re not V-Modas.
The sound is pretty good. Not astounding but better than the vast majority. Sennheiser booms may have the edge on sound quality, but it’s marginal. It’s a very robust little boom, too, despite deceptive flexibility.
Two gripes, though. Firstly, the cable is *so* darn long. It gets caught in everything. Yes, you might be sitting some distance from your computer when gaming, but what if you’re walking around making voice notes on an iPhone or pocket recorder? It’s a real pain.
But secondly, and even more of a pain when compounded with that cable is what’s hung off it – the most unnecessarily massive (in both senses) clip. It has a mute button and a volume button, which are useful, but no switching/pausing/transport back to the source device or anything else useful, so why so big?? It swings that long cable out into practically *everything*. I’ve had the headphones ripped off my head passing through doorways where the cable’s swung around the handle; I’ve got caught on trees and street furniture; I’ve even become attached to a supermarket shopper’s coat.
It mystifies me; V-Moda are all about design, and this product could be perfect – the easy best of a thin field of competitors – if it weren’t for the dumb cable. It would make much more sense if they actually had the courage of their convictions and went fully modular: male jack plug above and female below so you can attach the boom mic in line to the cable you need, just as you can with the headphones themselves.
Anyway, I’d give these 3 stars if the overall quality weren’t so good, and if there were much in the way of real competition to it. The price is about right. So think of this as a three and a half star review…
Initially I looked into purchasing this for my V-Moda Crossfade LP (original, not 2) as I prefer the idea of a boom mic, rather than in-line mic for playing games and using voice chat through Steam.
I was rather surprised to find that this will not work with only V-Moda products but any headphones that have a standard 3.5mm jack (there might be exceptions, but I don’t know), as the mic aspect is only in the cable. That’s excellent news for future purchases of headphones and my recommendations of headsets for other people.
Mic quality has been reported to me as being exceptionally clear. It’s a mic so don’t expect to sound like you’re in the same room as another player and, obviously, it will depend on the quality of their headset as well but the first description was that I sounded like I was talking on a phone with good clarity. It’s a mic – there are variables galore but positive feedback all round.
The cable itself is pretty decent. The cable has a standard 3.5mm jack that works with Apple products, 3DS systems and the like. There’s a separate adapter for plugging into the PC. I’m not sure about the in-line controls but I’m going to leave it out of pros vs cons because I can’t make up my mind; there’s nothing that I can put my finger on that is “bad”, let’s put it that way.
The boom mic, astoundingly, feels solid and flimsy at the same time. It’s extremely easy to bend the mic (cable? Pole? I don’t know the term) but at the same time it doesn’t feel like it’s going to break any time soon. I can only assume that it’s that well-made.
If I had one niggle about the cable it’s the inability to vary the length; it’s too long for where I have it plugged in and I can see that other people would have a similar issue if they plug this into the front of their PC, for example. I can’t call it a negative per se, however, as it’s a cable length. Some people may need it to be longer.
One negative I do have is that the PC adapter could have had a clearer way to illustrate which is the mic and which is audio. There is a symbol on the side of the jacks with headphones on one and an arrow on the other but I would have preferred coloured bands (do they have a term?) on the jacks, rather than them both being black.
Not much else can be said, really. It’s a cable that works with the headphones and the mic is clear.
Good mike. Very good placement on my Phillips Fidelio X1s.
This review is intended for GAMERS, so if your looking at this mic for other purposes, you may be better off reading another review. That said, I have the UE 6000 headphones, which are Apple ready, and wanted to use them for online gaming and chat on xBox One online. Because the UE 6000s are Apple-ready, the inline mic will NOT work due to ground and mic rings on the jack being flipped from the “standard” used in the xBox One headset adapter. But, using this mic with the UE 6000s WORKS PERFECTLY!! This cord will work with ANY Apple based headphones (so long as your headphone cord is detachable).
The cord is of impressive build and performance quality! Other player’s voices are clear (limited by your headphone quality of course), and everyone you’re talking to will hear you clearly. Nobody has complained about the quality of this mic. The mic receives sound on both sides, so it’s basically “reversible”, which means it doesn’t matter if your cord plugs into the L/R side of your headphones. As for the mic stem, it’s perfect! Very flexible, and will retain whatever shape you place it in. It’s lightweight, so it’s not going to fatigue the wearer after long term use. And the max volume while playing online is LOUD (though this may be attributed to the UE 6000s). Many people have complained of low volume while using the headset adapter with whatever headset they’re using. The quality of the cord exceeds the $30 cost, so it’s a value purchase. Rather than buying a new set of Turtle Beaches, Trittons, etc, this mic’s value becomes an even greater value.
***- The xBox One Headset Adapter is a MUST! This cord will not bypass the need for the adapter.
Because this cord wasn’t designed exclusively for gaming, the cord is on the long side (6ft long). However, it does come with a velcro strap to tie the cord and shorten it. It’s a solid solution, or you could just use a twist-tie for the same purpose. The only slight complaint that could be made about this mic is that if you rub it, you’ll hear some SLIGHT muffling in your headphones. But, you only really notice it if there’s no sound coming through the headphones. When playing, I never noticed any sound interference at all.
Rather than buying the Polk 4-Shot gaming headset for $160, or the XO Sevens for $135, I’d strongly recommend this alternative for the same price- this V-Moda mic ($30), the xBox One Headset Adapter ($25), and the UE 6000 headphones. As of 3/26/2014, these headphones are listed on Amazon for $80 (in white), and $100 (in black). I did a side-by-side comparison with Beats Studio, and these 6000s sounded better/clearer with just as much bass if you wanted. Plus, you can then use these headphones “on the go” unlike turtle beaches, tritons, etc. And their build quality is far superior to the Polk and others.
In conclusion, this mic is perfect for turning ANY pair of detachable cord headphones into a gaming headset when used with the xBox One Headset Adapter. The construction and performance are top notch, and the mic stem is highly customizable. If you already have a quality pair of headphones that you feel would make a great gaming headset, then buying this mic is a no-brainer. If you don’t already have a quality pair, it’s worth your time and money to put together a gaming headset using this mic. And if you go this route, start by looking at the UE 6000s!!
