Yeah not much to say, for $100 on sale and actually knowing how to set up my audio equipment unlike some users in the reviews, this little beast does it all. No need for a shure SM7B if you know your stuff, simple as that.
To anyone checking reviews, research mics and how to properly power and set them up EQ wise before buying any mics using the XLR interface, hell even usb mics, learn to find some EQ software. Those are cheaper and will probably do you just fine if you take the time to learn.
I love the build. I think the recording clarity is excellent for the price point. Looks grea
Son was very happy with this unit. It’s definitely an upgrade from basic microphones and is built well also. Good investment for sound quality in home recordings.
Great microphone for podcasting. Have two of them for that purpose.
Love it because it’s good for belting and quiet singing. Definitely a good mic for the price and I love it!
It’s a good microphone, easy to use, great finish, optimal range, good for voiceover.
I purchased a Shure SM7B around the same time as this and the quality of the Shure is definitely better but I found the value with this mic far exceeds the shure… with this at2035 mic it adds a little extra bass when you speak close to it which sounds nice with voiceover and it also doesn’t require a ton of gain (fethead or cloudlifter). With the Shure I could barely hear myself even after processing the audio and turning up the preamp. So I went from spending $550 to $150 and am just as happy with the sound.
Product came quickly, sounds wonderful but mine has some issues that may seem nit-picky, but for 200 bucks I figured the issues wouldn’t come out of the box.
The first is an aesthetic defect on the mic, which appears to be metal or ceracoat/powder coat spatter. It’s not oil and it won’t come off without risking scratching the coating. Sure not an issue when I have it in the shock mount, but when I want to drape it over my amp for recording it’s all I can see.
The second issue is that the switches on my model are very inset and stiff to toggle (Giggity). I need to nearly flip a nail back trying to switch it sometimes. Yeah… There’s a cringey feeling for ya. How can that not be a faulty unit?
To put it bluntly, I feel like the QA Dept should have caught this in the floor. Mind you this could be a one-off and, if AT is willing to replace the defective one, I will gladly rate this 5 stars. I understand that unexpected things happen in manufacturing that can slip through the cracks. “Real boats rock”
I love this mic, have it set up for streaming and it is such good quality for its price
The quality of the playback is really high and personally believe is worth it’s price plus more. Highly recommend this microphone for vocals and instrumental recording.
Good microphone i use daily for over a year and still works great. Comes with a nice shock mount and very well packaged
Although it is a condenser mic, you don’t have to handle it with too much care because it is a “Fixed-charge back plate” mic, not a “true bias DC condenser”. The sensitivity is a little lower than the AT4040, but they have a similar sound. Considering it price, solid quality, and the ease of use, it’s one of the best choice for home recording.
Bought three mics total now.
They are awesome.
Great rich base.
Clear as can be.
Everyone comments on the clarity and richness of these mics.
Nicer low tones than my friends mxl v64i
Use it for podcasting.
Was so nice i ordered three and tossed my other mic.
I’ve not used it for singing or music.
But crystal clear voice mic.
Get second opinion on music recording.
They say its the best mid-range mic on the market, I agree.
I upgraded to this mic from a blue yeti about a year ago and to this day I have never had a single issue with this mic.
Use for vocals, acoustic guitar, spoken word – you name it. It’s the most versatile, best sounding condenser mic at this price point. Massive upgrade over SM57/SM58, and other Audio-Technica mics at lower price points. Finally “that” sound you search for.
This mic is impressive and I was blown away with how well it records audio. Can play a song through it and it sounds no different on the other side basically.
Great value for your money !
Update: after one year still sounds good and smooth, I recommend it. Cheers.
I mean, what can you say, its an amazing condenser mic. It is a big step up from the yeti, and the next step up from this is the Shure sm7b. For what you pay, this is 5 stars all the way. You cant ask for much more especially around this price. This mic will defiantly get you started. Just remember to pick up a USB interface for the XLR if you are planning on using this for PC. I recommend, Scarlett for USB interface. Its simple.
I use this for streaming and it’s perfect. I’ve had it for a few months now and i’ve had no issues. super easy to set up and perfect sound quality
This is a legit mic Ive been using it since the past month, Records amazing and reduces noise. Worth the money! Even if you are beginner this mic will help you. If you’re looking for a Condencer Mic in a budget I insist you to stop browsing and buy this one!
I got this mic for long conference call sessions where voice quality has some importance as well as recording classes I teach and sound bites for imbedding in presentations for these classes. I have used these mic’s before for studio and recording work as well as live amping of classical cathedral choirs. They are awsome instruments that offer fantastic sound, reliability, flexibility of setting, subject and outcome and all at a price that can’t be beat. They are quite robust, bearing in mind they are precision tools, and offer the best range of audio stream or recording for a very reasonable price.
Excelente sonido, materiales buenos, y la ganancia es sorprendente. El precio es lo mejor del micro.
Wow. I searched for months before deciding on a condenser for my home studio. I eventually decided on this one and I haven’t regretted it for a day! I’ve had this for close to six months now and it’s held up amazingly. I even dropped it on my desk once (A big no no for condensers) and not only does it still work great, it didn’t even scratch the sturdy, all metal body! It sounds wonderful, especially for the price (but you may need to EQ it to your voice and application). Overall a phenomenal microphone! You won’t regret buying this!
Update: Nearly two years later and it’s still going strong! Just get a nice case to store it because the pouch isn’t very protective and may lead to its demise. Great microphone!
I use both obs and audacity as well as the stein berg ur12 audio interface to record with this mic and it works fantastically. Amazingly, even though my computer is right behind it and it’s fan can get pretty loud the mic barley picks it up at all which is a pleasant suprise
It’s great that a big name like they have is still willing to make a budget mic with the bells and whistles this one has. I also have an AT2020 and they both work great. Low noise, good sound quality and this one ads a low cut switch to give you a little different sound if you’d like and the 0 to -10 dB switch that really cuts ambient noise. This makes recording anything super accessible to the average hobbyists and without sacrificing quality. The higher level mics will give you a more custom sound depending on the mic, but this one does a great job capturing your natural voice.
I’ll make this short and sweet. AMAZING! condenser mic. I’ve been recording with my buddies $1500 condenser mic. And this thing sounds just as good if not better in a few ways. I’m honestly speechless.
This is a great microphone I would recommend you get a good interface though for i
I use this mic in combination with a RodePSA1 arm and a Scarleto 2i2 interface.
It comes with it’s own shock mount and I bought a windscreen sleeve for it.
This is by far the absolute best microphone you can buy without going upto a Shure mic in the 500$ range.
It picks up the depth in my voice and is just the right amount of warm for me.
Crystal clear and crisp without picking up everything around the room.
This was an upgrade from my Blue Yeti for broadcasting on Twitch. Love this new mic and the setup was very straight forward. The sound is great and gives a more professional feel.
Bought this after using the AT2020 for 5 years. Neutral-sounding, and beautiful on male and female vocals. Requires less EQ decisions. I love my 2035.
I purchased this mic to use for live streaming, podcasting, and YouTube video voiceovers to replace the Neewer condenser mic I was using. I plug into a Yamaha MG10XU mixer as a preamp/USB interface.
PROS:
– Rock solid build quality
– Very low self noise.
– Very good signal to noise ratio
– Built in high pass filter
– Pleasing sounding presence boost in the 10kHz-15kHz range
– Reasonably priced
CONS:
– 5/8 to 3/8 mic stand adapter is cheap plastic
– Carry case is flimsy
– Shock mount uses friction only (no indents or any other type of secondary lock), and while it hasn’t slipped yet, the plastic construction and lack of secondary lock doesn’t inspire confidence.
Overall, I’m very satisfied that all of the pros went into the construction and sound of the mic itself. While this isn’t going to force Neumann to slash their prices for fear of losing sales, this is a very solid price-to-performance condenser microphone that just sounds really good on voice. Recommended.
Got this mic to record vocals at home, and am quite impressed with the quality. I’ve owned several higher-end AT microphones in the past, as well as other brands of large diaphragm condensers, and this simple mic works perfectly for me and my current setup. It lacks a switchable polar pattern which may be an issue for some, but there is a more expensive version of this with that feature. This will also work well on acoustic guitar and other instruments with a similar timbre. The construction is solid as always with AT gear, and the shockmount is nice and tight. I predict years of use, and you could probably use it as a hammer in a pinch. Should also be good for podcasting/audiobooks/broadcast, and much cheaper than some of the standards for that (dynamic mics included).
I’ve had this mic for about 5 months now. It’s paired with my Behringer U-PHORIA UMC22. It requires phantom power by the way, and an XLR cable for those who are unfamiliar with non-USB microphones. So if you’re going to get it for your computer, you’ll need an XLR to USB interface, such as a mixer, or preamp, or that Blue Icicle thing. I bought this specifically because I was looking for a larger diaphragm microphone, with directional capture, and I simply trust Audio-Technica. The frequency range, the warmness it adds to my voice, and how natural my voice can sound given the right proximity and mic settings, makes me genuinely love this mic. You will absolutely need to adjust the settings of your preamp/mixer and OS mic sensitivity settings to get it to sound how you want. But when you do it sounds so damn good. I personally keep the mic under my chin, about six inches away from my mouth, pointed straight up. This keeps my breaths from going into the mic, plosives are almost nonexistant, and it captures a more natural frequency of my voice because its far enough away, but not so far away that I need to increase the sensitivity and catch more background noise. If you’re curious, I use Windows 10, in the sound settings my mic is set to 80, and my preamp is set to ~55%. I also use a compressor at a 15 ratio, -17dB, and a noise gate at around -40dB.
I’m a bit picky with my mic audio so I’ve gone through many hours of research, test recordings, and tweaking to learn and get this mic working to its fullest capabilities. Generally speaking, no quality mic will sound its best, unless you know what you’re doing.
With that said I really can’t recommend this mic to people who know nothing about basic audio setup/engineering, or people just looking for a plug and play mic.
However if you’re willing to take the time to understand how audio works, or you already understand and you’re looking for a nicer mic than what you currently have (me before getting this one) I can absolutely recommend this one
Works amazingly! Tried on the Focusrite and it was okay, but paired with the UX2 this microphone is insane! People often ask me what mic I’m using due to how nice it sounds!
Lo recomiendo, tiene un muy buen aislante de ruido, a veces tengo problemas en cuanto a cmo agarra la voz pero se lo atribuyo ms a m tarjeta de audio o los cables
Good mic. Better quality sound and build compared to my Yeti. Really good product. The one I got wasn’t the bundle so it doesn’t come with XLR cable or pop filter though but still an overall good price and it came with the shock mount and a neat little carrying case.
Very good mic in this budget price
A little boost is present in highs but its ok you can solve it with eq or compresso
This mic complements an older mic that I am still using. Clear and reliable sound and the quality is pretty good. My 5 star rating is not overdone. The sound is very clear in all registers and it is best to limit the reverb to a minimum for the better sound results. I recently ordered the best quality connection cable available and the end sound results for recording purposes are excellent.
I upgraded from a cheap USB mic to this through a Behinger Q802USB interface. Yes it took some time to get the Amp settings tuned to my studio and voice. Now I sound like a warm hug. Real important for audio books.
I was skeptical about this mic for high-end audio work. Lately, looking for good condenser mics is difficult, because so many people review these “budget” mics for various podcast or YouTube/Twitch uses, and while they are happy with results, would those same budget mics work well in a small production studio? Unlike the social media uses, I’m looking for something that when in a properly conditioned room, does it capture a neutral response, have head room and provide little coloration?
I can say with this mic, all YES. For the price, this provides a very neutral color with little debit where it counts for most midrange instruments and vocalists. In fact, compared to some other mics in the studio, I actually prefer this for baritone-to-alto singers because of the clarity. There is a small decline in response on the high end (well outside most purposes), but that’s what the other mics are for.
This mic stacks up pretty well compared to some that are a few hundred dollars more, and for mid-range vocals or instruments, I think it provides a great sound for the money. I wouldn’t want to use this for higher frequency instruments or things like bird calls, etc. compared to some other mics. But, if you don’t have a choice (and many people might not), this mic would give very professional results for a really reasonable price. I am probably going to pick up another one soon.
I use this with a Mackie Onyx Artist and it’s able to pickup my natural bass voice and my wife’s higher pitch. Great mic and a popular choice of YouTube and Twitch content creators. Both At2035 and Mackie are quality products and have never let me down using them several times every week.
Great Microphone but i decided to go with a Rode Procaster and send the at2035 back i contacted the seller and he ignored the cancellation it later said it was shipped (day later) so i just waited till it arrived and shipped it back…lost the shipping on it. Back to the Microphone. to cut down floor noise you will need to do two things. Purchase a Pop Filter,PEMOTech [Upgraded Three Layers] Metal Mesh & Foam & Etamine Layer. it is 8.99 and put foam on the rear side of the mic or a square cut rubber mat type (i used a piece of a black yoga man cause its 3/4 thick you can use the bands on the PEMOtec to hold in place. . It helps with unwanted noise. dont crank the gain theres no need to if your podcasting or recording audio you can amplify the volume with audacity (free) and use noise reduction to eliminate any hiss..
Just a great product. I really needed a good mic for my podcast and this made the cut. I had the chance to compare the mic with a Newman 102 which is about 5 times the price. The Newman is an incredible mic, but using the 2035 I had about 95% of the results I got from the Newman. So cheers Audio Technica for the 2035, this is a no brainer at around 200$ CAN.
This thing can pick up sound details that I have never heard before. I am pairing this with an H4N and it’s amazing what it can do. I am not experienced, but I know great sound when I hear it. Just hope it would come with a wind muff or one of those mesh screens.
I’ve been running this mic for over a year now and it’s a fantastic piece of equipment. Using with a Steinburg UR12 interface and Rode PSA1 arm, mainly for talking over Discord. The included isolating mount works great and the microphone does not pick up any conducted desk noise. The overall setup looks clean and professional. I have not needed to use the integrated padding or highpass filter options, but it’s nice to know that they’re present if required. In terms of performance, there is likely very little real-world difference between this and the (XLR,not USB) AT2020.
Not going to get too technical with this review but I will say that this mic is a great new addition to my studio and will be put to good use. Sounds great, feels great and built great. Another win for Audio Technica.
Hearing the playback is so crisp. Pretty standard mic. The shape doesn’t matter. It has features that are either too complicated to understand for a layman or unnecessary for stupid gamers like myself. Go down to the 2020 if you don’t care so much about tinkering with it. Love it to death.
Probably the best microphone you can buy that isn’t too expensive, would recommend to anyone
I’m not an audio expert but this is really easy to set up and use. The quality is absolutely great, but it’s an off axis dynamic with no pattern selection, so it will vary depending on how it’s used.
It’s not going to work very well if you like to “eat the mic”. I got decent results at about 30 cm with a wind shield, with the mic rotated around 90 degrees.
It also worked very well as a room mic hanging above several people.
It’s incredibly sensitive, and I needed to use a noise gate with my less-than-premium mixer because it was picking up everything, like mosquitoes buzzing across the street, or someone flushing a toilet across town.
If I had more expert knowledge I’m sure there’s a way to make this go away, but for a novice, it’s a bit of extra work over a less sensitive unit.
Quality is very good, but it didn’t worked with m-audio profire610 interface, I don’t know why it didn’t worked…
Amazon delivery, replacement, returns and refund….all went well
Thank you Amazo
Many years ago, I used to analog electronic music in a decent studio. This time around, I needed to do some voice overs for an iPhone app. To get the job done, I almost purchased a Blue Yeti + Blue Radius shock mount. But then read how analog plus a good digitizing preamp produces better results. So, I went with the AT2035
Along with the AT2035, I purchased the following
preamp: BEHRINGER U-PHORIA UMC202HD
cover: Sywon Metal Mesh and Foam Layer Mic Cover Handheld Microphone Pop Filter Windscreen Wind Screen Studio Shield Mount, Black
boom: RODE PSA1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm
cans: Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone
foam: Acoustic Foam Egg Crate Panel Studio Soundproofing Foam Wall Panel 48″ X 24″ X 2.5″ (2 Pack)
For editing the hundreds of clips, I purchased Reaper.fm (even though I have Ableton Live for recording keyboards). To learn the basics of voice over, I spent a day watching relevant videos from the “booth junkie” youtube channel.
The results have been amazing! 30 years ago, getting vocals this good would have cost many thousands of dollars.
Good for voice recording, but for guitar I don’t think so, there is some weird sound when I play the guita
This microphone is an excellent value. There’s a lot of competition on the market but for this price, it can’t be beat. This is the perfect microphone for someone who’s upgrading from a USB mic to an XLR setup with a concentration on capturing clean vocal recordings. The quality is right up there with the big boys yet it’s at an affordable price. As far as quality is concerned, this mic is an easy 9 / 10. Want to step it up to a 10/10? Be prepared to spend $700 (Neumann TLM 102) at a very minimum.
And on top of that, it comes with a shock mount that retails for $80 separately. Take that a step further and have Amazon Harmony call you… Saved me another 15%. When all is said and done, a mic of this quality and a shock mount for less than $150, new, tax included? Can’t be beat.
Will write a more in depth review upon extensive use, but through-out the entire process of setup, ease with equipment, it’s been nice. Very clean packaging. Product came spotless. Already having a great time. Awesome mic for streaming, people can hear you very well when you have your audio interface. cheers
Great quality. I am far from being in the studio environment, but most of the time I do not even have the noise pick up. What was surprising if you move away from the mic it still picks up voice fine (but in this case with noise). I am happy, had no issues with i
This is a absolute upgrade from the cheap Leagy L-58 i used. on the end with that one it’s sounded like my audio was in a blender but this new mic it’s clean and beautiful . well worth the cash
This mic is ideal for the Behringer U-Phoria UMC404 series audio interfaces. Get a good well-balanced XLR cable, and you’ll get great, well balanced mids, lows, and highs out of the large diaphragm on this mic. I stepped up from an ATR2500 (USB AT2020) to this + the audio interface when running into issues with Reason 9.5 and the whole ASIO4ALL memory leak/screeching/distortion issue. The ATR2500 is a perfect mic for all digital internet voice applications, including video conferencing, streaming, VOIP for games, etc. but working with a proper studio mic is basically necessary for digital music production/live recording. The ATR2500 has a studio-quality physical design and sound replication, but the USB-microphone protocol causes inherent issues (with Windows at least).
The mic performs extremely well, and I like that the package includes a noise damper and stand head. It’s great for recording dynamic sounds, like human voice and instruments, as well as for recording impulse responses. If you want to record things like effects, get a stereo mic for environmental or shotgun mic for point, this is not the mic for you (basic cardioid shape picks up too much of the reverb of the room for single point sound recording, but too little of the ambiance for environmental, also it’s mono). But if you’re looking for a dynamic musical recording mic, pro-quality studio recorder, or smooth deep mic for varied vocal recording in a talking setting, get this and an appropriate phantom power supply (required).
A very sensitive Condenser Mic on a good budget. Versatile enough for the wannabe home studio engineer I mean…Its Audio-Technica, what more can I say..
i love this mic but i just wish that it would screw to spider shockmounts
Absolutely love this microphone. I have used it for over a year now, and it is incredible. The sound quality is outstanding, it can be attached to many different types of stands and boom arms with the provided AT adapter that unscrews to reveal a standard threading for most stands etc.
The low cut filter provides excellent vocal quality and when used in conjunction with Adobe Audition audio mixing software with added effects, the results are PHENOMENAL.
5 stars, absolutely recommend for podcasting, even instruments from the research i have done (Please note, I do not use it for instruments so keep that in mind)
I will very likely be purchasing more of this product, or the newer version of it at a later date. Excellent produc
Works like a charm. After using USB mics I wanted to try something that gave me more control over what is heard. Using it with the Line 6 UX2 audio interface. Managed to cut out most noise from my PC and outside sound. Couldn’t be happier.
Used this for an ambient side fill on accoustic instruments via Presonus Firestudio with 48v Phantom power into Logic Pro X at 24 bit 96Hz and it delivers a natural warm sound that balances off the onboard pickups really well. This makes a good solution for rehearsals with a quality audio for the band to listen back at a very good price. Brilliant.
Great product, great sound and worth the purchase so long as you have a good audio interface to go with it.
At this price range, nothing really can beat it. It’s a good looking and great sounding microphone. Just remember that this isn’t usb so if you’re hooking up to a pc, get an audio interface or go for the usb version (at 2020?)
Coming with it’s own shock mount is also a nice plus.
If you need a microphone with a good audio quality then look no further. The sound is great and the switch to add a -26db padding is a nice addition.
The mic is however slightly hard to push in it’s suspension holder, but it’s an included addon and once it’s in place it’s clearly going nowhere.
All in all if I ever need a second mic for my small studio, this will be it.
Great microphone. I won’t go into too much detail as there are other reviews that cover that, but it sounds great and produces a great sound.
While not a terribly big jump from my previous AT2020, the addition of the High-Pass filter and the 10db pad are surprisingly useful and definitely is noticeable in difference. Not to mention the wider range this mic can capture. Would definite recommend to others and honestly have been advertising the AT2020 and AT2035 to everyone who compliments on my mic quality.
Perfect. If you’re a male with a bassy voice, you probably want this. If you’re a female, or want to avoid bass in your recording, I would get the AT2020.
Sure, you can turn on the high pass filter, but you can save money with the AT2020. It’s not the only difference, but it’s one of the bigger differences. Just throwing out some options.
The build quality is very good and sturdy, producing very low interference which is a huge plus. This microphone also provides crisp recording of vocals. A must have if you are entering into studio recording on a limited budget. The shock mount it comes with is also great.
Fantastic mic I have it upside down in my arm and use it for live streaming and podcasting
Excellent quality and the little bag it comes with is so cool
Looking for a mic for my new Youtube series Creative Bar. This works perfect. Great sounding quality in what some would say a “small” mic!
This replaced my Rode Procaster in a streaming setup and I’m really happy with it so far. Using it in conjunction with a Behringer MIC200 Preamp and a Scarlett 2i2 Audio Interface, sound is perfectly clear. I added an AT8137 windshield to mine as an alternative to a pop shield and it fits perfectly.
Great mic. Greatsound. Love tht the shock absorber comes with it. Great purchase.
No bad microphone, it’s definitely a good upgrade from my blue nisso
What a great microphone, FIRST THINGS FIRST if you want to use this with USB on your computer you need to buy a phantom power stick, it will not work any other way via USB. its sound is great . works great with my arm i have for it, i use it for livestreaming and can’t think of a better microphone to use. The phantom power i bought was BLUE MICROPHONE ICICLE XLR to USB from amazo
Fantastic sounding microphone with a sleek black exterior. Solid steel construction so it can take a beating, but hopefully it doesn’t. Included shock mount fit well, but lacks the ability to pivot side to side. If you are using a boom arm, I recommend getting an adapter to be able to swivel the mic 360 degrees. Shock mount is also plastic so it leaves something to be desired. I will likely pick up a steel one at some point.
I’m really happy with the flat response on this mic. I had been using a Shure SM-58, and with the AT, I can hear a lot more of my lower midrange. My voice is probably a fairly typical female alto, strongest about G2-G3. Definitely a step up for me. Not sure how I’ll use the 10dB pad–wish they had a graph of what that does to the response. I personally like it that the switches can’t be accidentally moved. Nice shock mount too.
So confusing to hookup as it was a gift; I do not know about microphones. Bought some attachments that are also available on amazon and am told it’s great quality.
Crystal clear microphone. Use for commentary while gaming. I don’t exactly have Mariah Carey’s vocals (then again, she doesn’t nowadays either) so I can’t tell you what singing is like on it – although I’m sure it’s wonderful. Is quite expensive when considering that you need an Audio Interface and more than likely a mic boom/stand as well, however, if you’re looking for a high quality XLR microphone this should be expected. Comes with a nice branded leather pouch to store the shock mount, too.
Needs testing through a mixer. I have bought a lot of AT stuff, and have been impressed with the lot of it.
It has a German minimalist feel to it,. This mike has been used to record a digital piano. Pianos are notoriously difficult to record, Had an AT shotgun mic at the bass end of the piano. A sound engineer suggested I should reverse the arrangement for an upcoming recording of a classical pianist. So I did, letting the Audio-Technica 20 Series AT2035 Cardioid Condenser record the top to middle of the piano, and the AT shotgun record the bass. Great, The Mix Pre D helped me sort out the levels and the results were very good. Ive been worrying about this gig for a while, so am very happy with this great mic.
Correctly positioned on a boom mic stand it did a great job , I used the AT monitor headphones to catch the audio, and the combination surpassed my expectations .The Audio-Technica 20 Series AT2035 Cardioid Condenser Side Address Microphone is a great product, just make sure you have the active side of the mic facing yr audio.
I use this mic for voice over work for marketing videos and it works quite well in that roll. The unit appears to be very well made and is an excellent looking mic. I also have a Rode NT1A that I use in my home office and I will say the Rode is just a tad more quiet than the AT, but the AT2035 has a high pass filter and 10db pad that is lacking on the Rode.
The extremely low circuit noise makes this a true pro option. It has excellent overall pickup and quite a rich sound although this can be a little muddy in the mix without EQ. My go to vocal mic for recording. Picks up low frequencies very well so bottom end on a guitar is bass rich (if thats what you want) and it is also great for bass drum and low end percussion.
I lucked out when I bought this microphone, as it was only $70 and was practically new. And I can honestly say, it was worth every penny, and then some.
First things first, as this IS a condenser microphone, you HAVE to give the room you plan to record in proper treatment. Otherwise it WILL pick up a lot of reverb and background noise. I have actually surrounded the microphone itself with studio foam inside of a cardboard box. It’s not the prettiest sight, but it was inexpensive and works just as well as the upwards $100 screens they sell for these.
Another thing to remember is to buy a proper interface for this. Especially if you are recording on a PC. I suggest using a Line 6 Pod Studio UX1, I managed to find one of those on eBay for about $45. It has an excellent noise gate with it that filters out the background noise in real time, without giving the vocals that robotic sound that noise removal in post tends to leave.
Please note, the UX1 does not supply phantom power, so you will need a phantom power supply. I use a Behringer Micro power supply P5400 with it ($20). You will also need to buy at least two XLR cables, one for the power supply, and one to connect to the interface, but you can find some decent ones around $7 -$14, so that is no big deal.
As for the sound quality, it is PHENOMENAL. Every syllable comes out clearly, and distinctly. Subtle nuances in tone that some lesser mics tend leave out are crystal clear, and, best of all, it can handle high vocals without peaking as easily like my other microphones did. I managed to go to ear piercingly high pitches, and still managed to keep it from peaking.
If you want high quality, professional sound, and don’t feel like spending over $300, this is definitely the microphone to get.
Two 2035s about 3 feet in front of the flautist.

This one, I wasn’t thinking. One mic is by the stage (in the shot). The other is behind the camera. So instead of right & left channels proper, I have front on the left, and back (with a speed of sound delay) on the right.

This this is great. It is my first condenser mic, and at $149 it is a steal.
I’ve always used Shure or Heil mics that cost over $250… This mic in a studio application smokes them. It is obviously more clear and pure the moment you try it. But if you really want to be amazed, do an A/B comparison.
This mic has convinced me to purchase the Audio-Technica AT4040. Cant wait to get it and I will review it also.
This is an excellent studio mic to have in anyone’s home studio. For that matter, it’s an excellent mic in a professional studio.
I’m a professional recording engineer, and I’ve always said there are NO RULES, JUST GUIDELINES. I’m not going to go into the technical whys and how comes of what makes a great microphone. You can read the tech specs and study that for yourself.
I say use your ears as the best judge as to what sounds good. For me, the AT2035 is a goto mic for a lot situations in recording voice and instruments. It’s reasonably priced so you can afford to have a pair. I’ve used this mic in live sound as well as studio applications, both indoor and outdoor venues, and the results are no less than perfect.
Clean, clear, and hits everywhere in the common frequency range of human hearing. It’s a warm sounding mic; very elegant and captures the natural timbre of unprocessed, acoustic sound. I feel this is a great choice for podcasts and even live radio broadcasts.
One of my favorite times in using this mic was for an acoustic classical guitar played in a stairwell at a college. I placed one in front of the player, and another on the first landing of the steps going up to the second floor to capture the natural reverb of the room. Outside of “tuning” the room with EQ there was no other processing used and the recording was spectacular. Very powerful sounding, yet all the nuances of classical guitar playing were present.
Bottom line is you can’t go wrong with the AT2035. If you’re new to recording and trying to decide what kind of condenser mic to get – this should be a first choice for you.
Before purchasing a pair of these I did quite a bit of research on mics in this price range and nobody has anything bad to say….only good reviews. I’ve used it for the past few weeks to record acoustic guitar in stereo. I can get a very nice natural sound..so the mic must be accurate. Build quality is really good and the shock mounts they come with are helpful. I’m really happy with the at2035!
I write and record my own music. I use this microphone for vocals and acoustic guitar. I replaced the cable that came with it with a Mogami and it sounds great. Crystal clear and it doesn’t color the recordings. It will pick up ambient noise from the front, but that’s to be expected. It does a pretty good job of blocking ambient noise from the back. Be sure to get a pop filter to go with it.
Bought for use in filming a theatre production. With my portable mixer only able to output 24V phantom power, I needed a mic that, didn’t require only 48V. This mic utilizes 11-52V DC. Also in this type of setting low frequency noise and rumble is predominate. Used the high pass filter for that without having to correct in post. Has great frequency response and the cardioid pickup pattern was very effective in picking up a great balance of the performance vocals vs audience response. Has the added use for studio work and voiceovers; great price; solid construction; good looks… comes with a very nice shock mount. I love my new AT2035!!!
Arrived quickly, exactly as described. This mic has a very natural sound and is suitable for many recordings such as voice, guitar, overheads, sax. I use it on everything without worrying, and recordings always come out full of character. Don’t think you can do much better for large diaphragms for the price.
Great price for quality kit and it works in our live performance context. Also very good at voice overs and spoken word recording
I bought two AT2035 mics for live stereo recording. In the short time that I have had them, I found them extremely sensitive to the minutest sounds and yet with a great dynamic range to handle loud passages. Being a proponent of accurate sound reproduction, I like the extremely flat frequency curve throughout the audible spectrum. Don’t forget that if your recorder doesn’t provide it, you will need some way to provide so-called phantom power to these condenser mics — without phantom power, they don’t work!
The AT-2035 is a superlative device and an outstanding value. I use a pair of them to record amateur piano; the results sound excellent, rivaling some commercial recordings.
The piano is a very demanding instrument to record; its frequency range covers the entire audible spectrum, and it has a very wide dynamic range. The AT-2035 is more than up to the task. It produces a nicely balanced neutral sound across the entire frequency spectrum. Its ability to handle the highest peaks allows crystal clear recordings of the loudest piano passages to be made with ease.
A particularly nice feature is that the AT-2035 has a very low noise level. This allows very low noise floor on recordings and makes it possible to cover from the softest to the loudest piano levels with a fixed mic pre-amp level setting on the recording equipment. Less fiddling with settings, less fuss, and more music.
Overall the AT-2035 is a bargain considering the level of quality it offers. Two points to keep in mind: It is a bit on the heavy side so requires a solid stand, and it does require XLR phantom power of around 4mA.
Best bang for the buck! Pretty versatile: Great for vocals (even though it’s a little bright, my voice sound very natural with this mic), the high pass filter its great for vocal recordings and also for acustic guitars and other stuff. It also have a -10db pad, which is excelent when you are recording a pretty loud sound source, like a guitar amp… I really recommend this mic for begginers and for those who have a home studio and want a really good microphone… Remember that this microphone is a condenser mic, and it would need a phantom power source, like most of the interface and preamps have (and some mixers) or you can buy a external one.
I have a Blue Snowball Usb condensor mic already and i realized soon that i needed something that was alot brighter and clearer.
The blue snowball is an awesome mic but its definetly on the lower grade for professional recording.
So i invested my $150 in this mic!
It comes with a spider shockmount also!
No xlr cables.
It has an awesome Low cut filter switch that i use now to kill out aany extra humming sounds in my vocal booth!
This mic brings out the brightness in my voice alot more!!
I used to rely on using vocal plate plugins alot with the blue snowball cuz it made my voice almost sound a bit muddier.
But now with this mic i can tell a major difference as im no longer overkilling my vocals with excessive Reverb.
It has a very crisp clean sound and espcially brings out the clarity in your words very nicely.
it also filters the low sounds out very very well.
there is also a -10db pad on it which cn b used to drop the volume of the mic when u r recording drums or instruments that tend to get very loud.
But this mic is definetly more built for SIngers and vocalists alike!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!
I had purchased this mic for my rapping and singing studio in hopes of an amazing sound and this is exactly what I got ! Along side my Alesis io2 (which is a great audio interface for very cheap, and has 48v phantom power which is needed to power the at2035) it was perfect! I use logic to mix and master my vocals btw. This mic is very similar to the AT2020 but is better by a long shot ! I have used the at2020 and the mxl 990 but I LOVE THIS MIC THE MOST ! It is the best in its price range and i would have had no problem paying 500$ for this mic. Although this mic is not SILVER at the picture shows , it does come with a very durable shock mount that allows the AT2035 (and the at2020 usb and xlr) to slide in and out with no hassle. This mic is perfect for anything and I highly recommend it ! It is perfect for starting studio and pod casting. It does not come with a stand and does require an audio interface with 48v phantom power (Alesis i02 is recommended) and XLR cable. I use a mac book BTW. I AM VERY IMPRESSED! 5 STARS ! PERFECT. COMMENT WITH ANY QUESTIONS !!!
It is great quality and the price is awesome for such a high quality microphone! It is well built so it should last a couple of yrs and it’s shape, color, and metal are very attractive! Beautiful addition to your studio if you have one. Nice professional mic. I actually prefer it to my more expensive Studio Projects C1 mic for voice over plus I like that AT/Audio Technica is smaller in size than the SP/Studio Projects mic.
Well built item that comes with a nice shockmount and padded pouch. Fortunately it sounds as good as it looks.
Coupled with the lovely Centrance MicportPro it produces a pleasantly smooth and detailed sound. It requires phantom power, but is very sensitive and doesn’t require much juice to get high levels.
I use it for speech and was expecting to have to use some post processing to warm things up a bit – I was wrong.
I actually compared this with the Shure SM58 and Heil PR-20UT. The Heil came a close second, and the Shure third (for my purposes, anyway).
Highly recommended.
