It took more than 2 weeks to deliver due to I am living in Spain.
However everything with the game is amazing.
😉
Good mechanics, and there is strategy to the way you play your heroes rather than just hacking at monsters. The heroic feats make your choices more interesting than some dungeon crawls. Having an overlord play the baddies makes this interesting, but sometimes if you always play the overlord you can come out wishing you could be a hero once in a while. There is an ap for that, but there’s a learning curve. Great components and as the missions get more complex there is a great urgency and a sense of consequence as you start to campaign. It does take a bit to get it to the table, however, as there is some set-up time and the rules are more complex than some table-top games.
Product arrived swiftly, as described and in the expected condition.
The game itself is a high quality dungeon-delving board-game built around tactical miniature combat in a high fantasy setting. A free application from Steam and the Android/iOS stores provides a full co-operative experience for those who don’t like the 1 vs All default game type.
A quick word of advice, the miniatures are in a plastic bag underneath the insert when the box is first opened.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark has quickly become a favorite weekend activity for me and my kids! With all the options available as far as quests, character and class choices, the versatility of the game makes for countless hours of adventures, rarely with the same outcome! And Lair of the Wyrm adds even more new content to further enhance game play. The expansion introduces Rumor cards so that side quests can be incorporated into a campaign (in which players can gain extra rewards for accepting these quests). There is also the Secret Passage search card and token that allows for players to investigate during a mission, offering more reward opportunities (the expansion also comes with a Secret Room tile that you can easily place against the edge of any constructed map). And of course, the additional heroes, monsters, and new class cards by themselves make this expansion worth getting! If you enjoy painting the models, I also recommend purchasing the Valyndra lieutenant pack (Valyndra is the main boss for this expansion).
Thoroughly enjoy this expansion. Adds two new heroes (a healer and a scout), along with two new monsters (harpies and worms). Nice map tiles too!
Really enjoy this game, Great solo along with the app Fantasy Flight Games developed to enable coop and solo games without the need for someone to control the overlord!
Shipped quickly, everything was there, but it did ship with a slightly dented box and one of the Ettins was sent with his club broken off. Half hour to 3+ hour game depending on TBTRPG experience, game/adventure familiarity, and general player competency.
Pros: Actually quite simple once you’ve started playing. Can be run with even more players than the description says if you split up monster teams between them. Well cast minis, and LOTS of them, lots of maps. At LEAST dozens of hours of gameplay without redoing anything, and great replay value due to nicely branching story paths. Enough objectives and characters, items, etc. to keep things fresh. Simple, engaging combat/skill check mechanics. Cannot attest to this myself but I’ve heard the company has good service.
Cons: There tends to be at least one damaged mini in the box of everyone I’ve known who has bought this game or its expansions, I even knew someone who got a broken die. I honestly felt fortunate to have only one mini broken as I dread customer service interactions, though I’ve also heard they’re pretty good about replacing anything broken. So their durability and/or quality control when packaging the minis loses Fantasy Flight a star. A little complicated for those with no experience in more involved board games. There are a Frickton of tiles to punch out, and figuring out where to store them is a bit trialsome the first couple times(the trick is to keep the cardboard dividers and store things under them. If you do it right its actually exceedingly neat and compacted).
We bought the game as a family Christmas present. My two teenagers and I love it. Combine it with the app which basically acts like a game master and its lights out! Plus the miniatures are awesome quality. I’ve painted a couple of them and they look good.
Having played Mansions of Madness which is based on the descent mechanic the one thing I do not like about this is the amount of terrain tiles that are non standard sizes and shapes. They don’t stack nicely into piles like the other set does.
Great “Big Box” Expansion with lots of new stuff. The ShapeShifters are certainly a new favorite Monster for me as an Overlord Player and add total randomness to the solo player app.
4 stars for a broken mini, which I will have to buy glue to fix.
Fantasy Flight have a poor replacement policy in the UK due to shipping from the US. Unlike others.
Great box and a must for any Descent 2nd Ed players!
Super fun & the instruction are pretty easy to read & understand. A great stepping stone into the world of D&D or Pathfinder if your wanting to corrupt your friends or coworkers!
2nd edition gets better with each add on i buy
Excellent large expansion to a large game. For those concerned, the copy I received was in English~
Very replayable game. Quality linen cards and good figures. I have since noticed there are a lot of fan quests on Fantasy Flight Games website.
Descent is a great fantasy dungeon crawler, which can be played semi-cooperative with up to 4 players vs an overlord or fully cooperative using the Road To Legend app. The game is detailed miniatures for both heroes and monsters across a modular board and comes with a variety of scenarios in the box, and an ever expanding range in the app.
Great game, full of replayability!
It is a great game! After the app was released, you can play it on your own.
Our first board game for me and my friends , we started with the Road To Legend app and did the tutorial Goblin quest on Normal , loved every second of it and got us instantly hooked!! so good!!
Great game! We had played the first edition of the game and really enjoyed it. We really like how the encounters are broken down into more manageable amounts of time instead of only 7 hour blocks. We also really like how we can replay the campaign and it can be very different due to new characters or using other encounters not used before. Our kids are playing with us, ranging from 10 – 16 years, boys and girls. They need help with strategy still, but they are excited to play it.
A brilliant game with tonnes of replay value. Perfect for fans of the original and new players alike. Easy to learn but tough to master. All the usual sales tropes to describe this game. Excellent quality game pieces and construction. all in all a 10/10
The app released last year is a great addition and removes the need for a human overlord and also opens Descent to solo gamers. The components are high quality, artwork is great and the game itself plays very smoothly. Awesome game. Worth every penny
Game arrived exactly as the order showed. Saw other reviews where pieces had arrived broken – this was not the case for me. Everything was intact. Found instructions clearer than 1st edition. Did have trouble getting all the pieces back in the box. Would be nice if there was organization system to box..
The expansion is great, well produced figures, great quality cards and map tiles, very nice feeling dice. I have already played several of the new quests with the new heroes and me and my friends agree – the new questline looks excellent. If you’ve played the base game’s story entirely 5 or more times, like me, it’s a definite must-buy and an excellent choice for a first expansion to the base game. Also, thanks Amazon for delivering this so quickly.
It’s a good and easy to set up game, after 20 minute you will be ready to play and have fun. It’s a perfect way to slowly introduce someone to a table rpg since no roleplay is really required, it is more of a tactical game than a roleplaying one.
I mean the obvious is that it is better than having a flat cardboard coin. I am a little irritated that the game itself does not come with the bosses in figurine form making this obviously a money puller, however, this purchase also adds more skills for the Overlord player for his deck and also adds the Threat and Fortune aspect to the game. I really wish that the description would mention if they are for the base game or what expansion of the game they are for. It is annoying to have to do research to make sure that I am not buying a lieutenant that belongs to an expansion that I do not own regardless of the fact that the Overlord cards enable the use of the lieutenant as a random creature.

I bought this game looking to fill a nostalgic Hero Quest shaped hole in my life and this has definitely delivered.
Combined with the free to download companion app, the game offers fully cooperative play, removing the need for someone to become the overlord.
The box is full of detailed and well made components. The miniatures are good and will paint up nicely, but they are not to the standard of modern Games Workshop minis. The rules are easy to learn and above all the game is great fun to play.
Good game.
However, it can become quite repetitive. In many map, the dungeon master will only use the biggest creature to block the path of the player.
Great game. A must for fantasy and game fans. Tons in the box too!
I love this game. It arrived in great shape. The second edition rules are a wonderful improvement on the first edition. You absolutely need a storage system to keep the hero and monster figures separated and to divide the tiles up, especially if you are going to pick up the expansions because there is a ton of content available for this game now. It’s a lot of fun, I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy settings or dungeon crawl type games.
While this game has a much broader range of appeal than I am probably giving it credit for, I will say that this game is perfect for myself and those like myself that always wished they could have gotten into D&D and other roleplaying type games.
This is the “dungeon delving adventure” that the box purports it to be and once you understand the game mechanics you will be off exploring and battling across countless permutations of cardboard set-ups. This is truly one of those games that I find to be a marvel of design.
To get right down to it it, though:
– it is fun to fight these monsters
– it is challenging
– it is fun to explore the board and activate the various object and search tokens
The only negative I have is that it is difficult, for me, to get enough players together to have an Overlord vs. 2 adventurers game. That said, this complaint is mostly moot since the Road to Legend app (also from FFG) takes over the role of the Overlord. My wife and I have been playing in this manner for weeks now, totaling 14 hours, losing many times, and having a blast.
If RPGs, co-op, dice rolling, challenge, and complex, semi-intuitive game design are things you are in to- I recommend this game. I further recommend the Road to Legend app and taking the core game for a spin before diving into any of the expansions. We have played this game a lot here and I feel like we have hardly scratched the surface; I am certainly going to get some expansions some time but there honestly is no rush.
TL;DR – I like this game.
Really engrossing game with great options
I love the continuous campaigns
Ended up spending too much money on sideboxes and quests
10/10 would do agai
Great game if you have aDM/GM to run it for you… made even better with the free app, “Road to Legend” (and the TWO free adventures within) that DM’s the game for you, setting everyone free to play. Lots of good (but not CMON quality) mini’s, tons of variation and replayability, and challenge galore. However, this isn’t a lounging game when played with the app… it expects you to move and move with a purpose. If you aren’t killing, you need to be moving, as if you rest too long, or wait around, the app will surprise you with a “2 Rounds left to complete the objective” announcement and trust me, you will lose.
Otherwise, with those caveats in mind, this is a fantastic dungeon crawler with enough challenge for even the hardiest adventurers.
un producto perfecto,
las cartas de muy buena calidad, las miniaturas son soberbias (y mas si te gusta personalizarlas), el juego de rol es amplio y las misiones son fciles de jugar y bien definidas.
This is a well-designed game for up to five players. In a two-player game, one player must control two heroes while the other acts as the overlord. The devs took the time to balance the mechanics as well. This game is somewhat easy to learn compared to others of this type. The campaign is written well and will take several sessions to complete; however, you can play a single encounter instead of the campaign. The miniatures are nice as well. They do not give you a mini for the lieutenants though and this is why I did not give a five-star rating. If you want a miniature to use for a lieutenant you will have to buy them as they are sold separately. This being said the supplied lieutenant tokens work just fine in place of actual figures. The expansions to this game are also worth looking into if you enjoy the base experience.
Fast combat rounds. Balance game play. Loads of scenarios. Miniatures to paint and cooperative expansion rules available – can you ask for more. Rules can be a bit tricky to get your head around but we’ll worth the perseverance and internet is full of video tutorials. So grab your sword and cloak and get adventuring!
good game..lots of bits…takes a while to set up first few times…not much space to store bits in the box..i have used a plastic compartment box to store counters and cards etc..lots of add ons for continued play…
Nearly a 5 star… love this game! Really good if you’re also in to painting miniatures.
A great fun game – if a little daunting at first. Takes a little while to fully understand the rules but once you get going it is an excellent game which you can easily lose hours playing. Got a few of these types of games and this is definitely one of the best – I look forward to trying out the many expansions
Great game to play with a group of friends or with family
Great expansion. I love the heroes, classes, and monsters. A quick overview of the classes: Apothecary = mobile potion master; Beast Master = melee with a wolf companion; Hexer = control mage; Treasure Hunter = tough class to play, based solely around search cards. Best of all, LOVE the new overlord Basic 2 deck. Each card in the deck adds a twist where you have a baseline effect, then an additional or altered effect if you target a specific archetype (mage/warrior/scout/healer).
One heads up: the quests are noticeably more complex than the original (which were already relatively complex). This is probably due to the inclusion of the “5th hero” ally character you receive. While I personally enjoy the complexity, you definitely need to have the overlord read two or three quests ahead of time so he has a good grasp of each of them before the heroes pick the quest.
Awesome game, A+
I used to play DungeonQuest and HeroQuest, this captures my memories from those but builds on them exponentially!! Highly recomended!!
Very happy with the mould of this miniature, the detail around her collar and shoulder pads are particularly impressive
Love this game….have had hours of fun with i
Hours of fun have been had, although feels slightly under powered as the Overlord. Hopefully expansions will fix this.
There are several expansions for Descent 2nd Edition like this one. Each expansion contains new heroes and monsters, new campaigns and all of the dice, cards and rules required, plus a new set of dungeon tiles to recreate the new areas. It’s very high quality, and the box is packed full of items. The contents can be used in either campaign or skirmish mode, and it’s fully compatible and interchangeable with the core game components.
This pack contains a “Lieutenant” character for use in the Descent 2nd Edition board game. “Lieutenants” are the “boss villian” characters – they are quite tough and require a certain amount of strategy and teamwork to defeat them. Also included in the pack are all of the cards and data sheets required to use the character in a game of Descent 2nd Edition.
There are numerous “Lieutenants” and they can be used in a campaign or a skirmish.
The figure is very well sculpted with plenty of detail and it’s cast in light grey plastic. A careful paint scheme will finish it off nicely. The figure can be used in any fantasy-based tabletop game, as well as being used in a display.

Descent 2nd Edition is similar in style and gameplay to D&D combined with Heroquest. The game can be played as either a series of campaigns or individual skirmishes. One player takes the role of the monsters and sets the pace of the game, i.e., the dungeon keeper, and the remaining players take the role of one or more heroes. The cardboard tiles are used to visually represent the game area, and there are cards for certain encounters and items like potions and weapons. Encounters are resolved by rolling dice. The game includes a full set of pictorial dice representing power, attack and defence, making the results easy to understand at a glance.
Each hero and monster has it’s own reference card which contains all of the necessary data in one place. Heroes can advance and get tougher, whilst monsters have two sets of data, one for “minions” and another for the “masters”. There are also “Lieutenants”, which are the final bosses that the heroes have to overcome.
The game has a lot of depth and strategy and can be played either with full detail or more simplified if desired. The miniatures are finely scuplted and will look great if painted carefully. The level of detail put into this game system is simply stunning, both in terms of the stories and the quality of the components. Skirmish mode basically lets you make up your own games, and you can even create your own campaigns to share online.
You can download the rules from the Fantasy Flight Games official website. At the time I write this (Sept. 2015) there are numerous expansion packs that contain more cardboard tiles and more miniatures, plus packs of heroes and monsters and packs of Lieutenants, and more packs are set to be released in the near future.
wonderful game, delivered fast. Usual quality Fantasy Flight product. The miniatures have great detail especially the Players Characters.

quick, cheap, my mate was pleased (was a birthday present) – crack on with the gaming
The game is great but… the box is not. The box does not have the compartments just plastic bags. The game is very interesting for me and my kids.
what can I say but awesome love this game tons of cards & map tiles, plus minatures.
A great little expansion that adds variety to the whole adventure, I would recommend purchasing the Lieutenant model as it adds further life to the ques
I have a love/hate relationship with this game, but I feel that anything less than a 4-star rating would not be fair to the game itself. The game has solid mechanics and quality pieces. Scenarios get played based off wins to one side or the other, showing some replay value. Some cons: with only one set of dice in the box, you have to keep them where everyone can reach, and having to constantly pick out only certain ones can be tedious (when some players are OCD and color code them and others do not). There is no co-op mode for two players to play against the game, they are on different factions against each other. The game has lots of pieces, several decks and tokens (easily managed with small ziploc bags). With the different tiles, cards, figures, etc, and having to read through each scenario before playing each time, setup can easily take 30 minutes (unless everyone pitches in).
While one of my players gets wrapped up in the hack and slash action, he often forgets that combat isn’t always the way to win scenarios. Definitely a great game overall
Extra stuff is always great for this game but there are better expansions to get first, if you have lair of the wyrm then I would get this as well.
When I was 12 my mum bought me a copy of Hero Quest, and we spent one night playing through it as a family. It sticks out as one of the most fun evenings that I can remember at that age, but its the only time I can actually remember playing the game in full.
I have a vague recollection of getting it out again to try and teach my friend, who became instantly disenchanted with it because I was insistent that when I played a certain card that I’d dealt for myself, it meant that his character instantly died.
Anyway, here I am in my 30s and looking for that ‘dungeon adventure’ type experience once more. A quick peek at eBay tells me that my near mint copy of Hero Quest – played properly only once, and played like a spanner perhaps once or twice more – was worth the better side of 100…. Excellent, I’m so glad I’ve still got it.
A brief phone call to my mother leaves me lost for words, as she ever so calmly advises me that most of my old toys went to charity. I don’t talk to my mother any more.
So, where now? I’m not forking out silly money for a board game, but there’s a certain itch that is becoming more and more prevalent and uncomfortable.
I REALLY REALLY WANT TO KILL A DRAGON!!!
Fast forward some extensive internet searching and I get the distinct impression that Descent SE is the way forward.
Too bleedin right it is – Dragons aplenty, magic coming out of your ears, and more goblins than you can shake a stick at.
If I were to give it one criticism, maybe its a bit too imbalanced in favour of the heroes. That said, the Overlord is a great role to play for the evening….. Lots of MWAHAHAHAs and such.
This item was lost in the post the first time around, but after contacting them they resent the order. Well packaged, great game ( though I have only played twice) , lots of components
An expansion to the the game that introduces two weird critters and some new esthetics to the game (neat tiles), that can change Descent play. Retail on these sets are a little high for the contents, so much so I was dissuaded at first. It’s scenario book supplied the first three matches I’ve played, and the scenarios are cleverly engineered. I also encourage owners of Descent to check out the FFG website, there they have a layout developer called the Quest Vault where you can virtually design your own scenario, or check out the community’s tribute. Well, as always, play what ya got.
I was doubtful at first, but love the games readjustment of game play mechanics. This game became reborn so much so the first edition owners like myself had to buy a converter box just to keep up and since then Fantasy Flight Games has been systematically draining my wallet every six months with new expansions. Each time a new one, like “the Manor of Ravens”, comes out I get giddy as a schoolboy to check out the new skill cards and new class of heroes, that the expansions provide. I always recommend to the Descent 2nd ed owner to also take some time to set up your account at Fantasy Flight Games, and play in the Quest Vault. The Quest vault is an editor in which you can design your own scenarios, based on the tiles from all your currently owned expansions. The style is that of the patently “Descent” for game play credibility. You can also contribute to the community’s tribute of scenario ideas. Keep flourishing Descent two and thanks for keeping it interesting.
Amazingly fun! Have only played the first mission of the campaign so far, but I can already tell that my family and I love it.
We are all fans of D&D type games; however, we have a few younger family members (younger meaning 13 & 15) who don’t have the patience for the long set up / play time D&D requires. This game still requires at least 2 hours per sitting to play, I would estimate. However, it’s far easier to set up and jump into a game than many other of its genre.
It’s also worth noting that both the game board pieces and hero and enemy miniatures are absolutely beautifully detailed in a way that you don’t see too often in board games of its price range.
100% worth it on all aspects.
The game is a musthave for boardgame/RPG fans, even non-geeks can enjoy it. Nice artwork, easy to learn rules, fun story, etc…
The only thing i do not like that the boss miniatures need to be purchased separately. I don’t like collectibles, stuff should be available in a deluxe edition package.
Take my review with a grain of salt since I haven’t played through a whole campaign but what I do know is
– A lot of minis and a variety of them. Don’t let the red/white scheme scare you away
– Lots of good quality cardboard and cards. Colorful art.
– Essentially a tactical miniatures fantasy game of 1 vs 2-4
– Meant to be played as a campaign and requires a dedicated group of consistent gamers
– Fair amount of setup time needed, but well worth it.
– Not a dungeon crawl / exploration since both sides have goals to pursue.
– Lots of small and large expansions which can use up your savings but do not require any expansions to have a good game.
If you are okay with all of the above then this game is for you.
Fun and engaging even with its setup/clean-up time, and the occasional drag of checking forums for doubts. Lots of colorful cards and bits, and lots more available through the pile of expansions Fantasy Flight puts out for it to keep everyone giddy. If you like the game you’ll probably end up picking some. If you don’t think the overlord player wont be overwhelmed by a little bit of extra rules, I recommend getting one Lieutenant Pack (~$9 with Prime), as the included plot decks add a nice layer for decision making. There are 16 available for now, and I’d recommend one of the following: Bol’Goreth, Merick Farrow, Ariad, Tristayne Olliven, Splig, Verminous.
A game to play with fellow board game or video game geeks, and not with the family on Thanksgiving. It requires a steady group to play the campaign mode, which utilizes the fun part of XP and purchasing weapons with gold. Look for the How to Play video series on YTube, it helps.
While Fantasy Flight has labeled this companion set to the 2nd edition Descent base game an “expansion,” it takes us a little further than Lair of the Wrym and the Trollfens. The Labyrinth of Ruin is designed to be an alternative to the Shadow Rune campaign setting provided with the base game, and it matches the Shadow Rune in depth, play time and complexity.
In the box you can expect the usual: cards, maps and token punch-outs, character cards, rule and quest book, figurines. Obviously, you will need to buy lieutenant packs if you want figurines for them.
I am not too keen on the modeling for the Carrion Drakes, but some epoxy will correct the casting gap in their necks and provide some strength. The detail could have been a little more interesting, like the work done on the Arachyura and Volucrix Reaver.
1st edition players will recognize more elements from Altar of Despair, The Tomb of Ice and the Well of Darkness in creature/character attack styles and abilities, as we already saw mixed into the 2nd edition base game.
One of the new features in this expansion is the “Basic II,” alternative Overlord Deck which has effects that trigger against specific character types -just for added evilness. The map tiles also have great thematic elements to add to your arsenal if you are into crafting your own quests using the Quest Vault on FFG’s website.
It’s definitely worth getting if you enjoy Descent and play frequently. The storyline and twists in the new quests are enjoyable and intriguing, especially if you like genres that deal with lost civilizations, conspiracies, archeology, etc. My only criticisms are: the compatibility of certain lieutenant agent decks with this expansion (check the Descent community message boards on FFG’s site). And, as you can guess, the system behind these releases designed to make heaps o’ cash for FFG: in a box this big, for my money, I want at least 6-8 new characters and 6-8 new monsters, not 4. But…perhaps the price of game designers, printing punch-out sheets and casting figurines has gone up? Who knows…
I have always been disappointed in some way by most of my role playing experiences. Too time intensive, too dominated by one player, too much planning, etc… I specifically bought Descent 2e as a stripped down alternative to playing DnD and i was not disappointed.
The scenarios are well designed and implemented, there is a huge variety to the role of overlord with the deck building mechanic. The same can be said for the Heroes who also get to choose advances and war gear. For me and my friends who have played, we found it to be a good tradeoff in comparison to the much more complex roleplaying games in terms of time investment and fun. you lose out on the role playing in the literal sense and just move from quest to quest, shop for items, level up your character. The quest outcomes impact future quests which is a nice aspect as well.
I love everything about the game, the fact that they captured what l love about role playing and dungeon crawling and packaged it into a much more approachable form with some (in my opinion) acceptable compromise.
This was the first board game I played.
Dungeons, and dragons and heroes and trolls, what is there not to like 🙂
First of all the components are great! The figures are nice and come color coded. The boards are 2 sided and assemble like puzzle pieces to create a variety of play areas. This game comes with a ton of cards that allow you to change the way the game works; there are many different character classes for you to choose from, different monsters recommended per encounter, cards that are only used in campaign play in order to level up… If you win or loose encounters determines what happens next in every quest, and depending on how you do in a quest the story branches out to a different quest. The game is very replayable.
This game feels like a good way to introduce people to table top RPG’s. It’s a great dungeon delve and the expansions are great.
The only negative thing I can say is that the Overlord’s Lieutenants are represented with a cardboard token, if you want a figure for the Lieutenants you would have to buy them each, separately. There are 6 Lieutenants available for the base game, luckily they each include new gameplay mechanics and new cards that add extra variety to the game.
A bit hard to understand the rules at first (check youtube videos with rules, its faster and easier) but when we start to play we didn’t want to stop =)
Great game, very fun and balanced
Good expansion for the base Descent 2nd ed. well sculpted mini’s (4 adventurers and 13 monsters) and high quality cardboard components I’ve come to expect from FFG. Its a good additional campaign for once you’ve finished the one in Descent Journeys in the dark.
I play a lot of strategy type board games, which led me to purchase Descent. The concept and gameplay are very interesting and change each time you play it. there is a great deal of strategy involved which adds to the challenge of the game.
The most disappointing aspects of the game are the rules. the pages and pages of rules. Which lead to some rules being an open ended rule where you would have to make an executive decision to determine how a scenario will be played out. The FAQ forum for the rules contradict the rule book ending in confusion of how the game is to be played.
I would definitely recommend this game to a friend, but keep in mind the open ended rules where you will have to decide on gameplay.
The game is good fun, easy to learn and relatively speedy. We have two heroes vs the overlord and the low numbers mean you really have to focus on the victory conditions and a win feels like a win. We lost the first quest which was surprising, annoying and why the game is fun. Perhaps the monsters are underpowered with a big party but you win by objectives and strategy not overpowered heroes or monsters.
This is fun and we will be buying the expansions. Other good games are bloodbowl, pandemic and arkham horror, not similar to this game but worth a look.
I have only played the 2nd edition. This is a roleplaying game made into a boardgame, and it is done very well indeed. I bought it for my 18 year old son, and he and I, and others, have had a ball with it. All the components are good quality. The ability to have characters work through multiple sessions and grow as they are played is wondercul. There is a moderate amount of strategic choice, and random events keep the outcome uncertain while never overwhelming the play. One player will invest extra time planning a dungeon, but it is not a lot f time. Possibly just 15 minutes, after you’ve done it a few times.
Great fun, with no disappointments. Some do not care for the fact that nobody can “die” – the worst result is losing a turn and some of your options for the remainder of the session. But the game is balanced with this in mind, and it works just fine. Definitely recommended for fantasy adventure enthusiasts new and old. You will want a medium to large table space to play.
As opposed to some of the criticism this game has had I felt it was a fun game to be the GM (or Overlord as it is referred to in this game) as long as you play with the mindset of aiding the player characters as opposed to playing against them. I find this game to be a real social experience and lots of fun because of it.
As per usual with FFG games it chockfull with components amongst them to be some of the most beautiful & detailed mini’s I have ever seen outside the wargaming scene. Also worthy of special mention are the tiles which all connect nicely without problems but most imortantly are friggin’ gorgeously drawn. Some of the more intricate ones really evoke a sense of adventure and awe which is so needed in a high fantasy setting.
I feel that for the money you’re spending you more than get your money’s worth contentwise.
The game itself is solidly designed and I love that there’s a campaign option coupled with a simple but cool levelling-up system. Definitely my fav board game and in essence an RPG-lite for people who lack the time to invest in a full-on RPG and therefore of course sacrificing a great deal of customisability but it’s definitely worth it in my eyes.
Descent is an excellent tabletop game that is great for players looking for a fun time, but something that’s a little more structured than an RPG like D&D or Pathfinder. One player is the Overlord, and one to four other players are the heroes; for each quest, the Overlord and the heroes compete against differing objectives. This asymmetric gameplay element is a lot of fun, and keeps the game exciting as players try to accomplish their goals while denying their opponent theirs.
The campaign included with the boxed set (the Shadow Rune) is a lot of fun, and is an excellent entry point for new players while providing enough complexity for more advanced players. In addition, once your group has played through the content of the base game, there are several expansions available (currently two small and one large) to provide additional heroes, monsters, tiles, and even new game mechanics.
My group had several players who were new to tabletop gaming, and had a lot of fun with Descent. It’s an accessible game that provides enough structure that newbie players can follow along and have a lot of fun, while still having enough flexibility to tailor their character as they earn additional skills and equipment. I highly recommend Descent 2nd. Ed. to any gaming group!
Lair of the Wyrm is the first expansion for Descent 2nd Ed., and is designed to be used as an “add-on” to an existing campaign (such as the Shadow Rune campaign from the Descent base game). Using the new Rumor cards, the Overlord can make additional “side quests” available. While the quests from Lair of the Wyrm do not grant experience (as this could skew the game balance for the main quests), it does provide the opportunity for players to earn some additional artifacts.
The new monsters are both good at what they do; the Hybrid Sentinels give the Overlord a sturdy shock troop option with a high amount of maneuverability (due to Flying) and a bonus when attacking weaker heroes (those with Strength 2 or less). In addition, the master Hybrid Sentinel has Fire Breath, which can provide a devastating area-of-effect attack when the heroes are clustered together. The Fire Imps , though easily defeated, can provide a significant amount of firepower due to their numbers. Additionally, there are a couple different versions of the quests available, so even with multiple playthroughs the Lair of the Wyrm content can still be something new for the players.
Another new feature is the Secret Room mechanic, which can show up in the Search card deck. This can provide the heroes with the opportunity to pick up additional loot, but it can also be manipulated by a crafty Overlord to slow down greedy heroes!
I never played Descent 1.0, so those who hold that dear to their heart may not want to take my review into account.
Overall, it’s a pretty streamlined dungeon crawler. You get a good combination of having a bunch of bits and pieces on the board to entertain you without it becoming overwhelming. The story and flavor text are your typical fantasy tropes, but they get the job done of adding a little ambiance to the game. The game pieces are your typical high quality Fantasy Flight ones, thick, durable cardboard and well molded plastic figurines. The game board pieces fit together incredibly well.
Gameplay wise, there are some balance issues. 2 and 3 hero games tend to favor the Overlord, but 4 hero games seem to be pretty well balanced. The game is definitely designed for campaign mode versus individual quests. Individual quests can strongly favor the heroes or Overlord, but that balances out throughout a campaign. I’d advise finding a core group of players to play the campaign. The only other major issue I have is that the game box doesn’t come with any containers for organization. You’ll either want to buy some containers from a craft store or make your own using foamcore.
I bought this with the idea that it could serve as a gateway game to pen and paper RPG’s for some of my boardgaming and MMO playing friends (including my wife) and after playing several sessions I think it will ultimately accomplish that goal, but in the meantime we’re having a lot of fun playing. Compared to the previous version (which I’ve played but don’t own) it’s much more streamlined and plays faster. Because of that streamlining there are a few rules that don’t pass the common sense test (line-of-sight for instance) but do help keep things simple and balanced. Like most games with asymmetrical sides, a well-organized group of heroes will decimate a tactically weak Overlord player, but if you have an experienced Overlord life won’t be easy for the heroes. Like most FFG products the components are impressive and well-designed and opening a big box-o-stuff is always fun. I was a little disappointed in the inclusion of tokens instead of miniatures for the lieutenants, since they’re so critical to the game. Apparently, Fantasy Flight will be releasing lieutenant packs to help remedy the problem, but obviously this adds and additional cost. There’s every indication that FFG will be supporting this game with lots of expansions like they did for the previous version. Combine that with a good amount of replayability and you’ve got a game that could be in your rotation for a long time to come.
A dungeon crawler that is designed well. This isn’t D&D you can’t compare it to that but that being said some of the mechanics are similar to it. There are no opportunity hits if you walk by monsters like D&D. It is a lot of fun I’m a new player and have only played the introduction so far but can’t wait to move to the first quest in the campaign. This comes with some fantastic quests and it will take a long time to go through them all. You can also download user created quests online which is great for the replay value of the game. This game consistently gets good reviews — check boardgamegeek. You can’t go wrong buying it.
The only CON I would give is that the rulebook is lacking a few things that my wife and I are still trying clarify.
I have played Descent journey in the dark 2nd edition a few times, the game is easy to pick up even for a beginner, also there a lot
of tutorials online to help you how to play the game the only thing I wasn’t used to is the set up of the game it does take a while to set
up, because I came from a person who plays rpg game on a console which is a lot easier just turn it on and its done. But to be fair
it is a board game and it required to be set up, but the advantange of this game is easy to get into also the game is broken into several scenarios or missions perfect when the power goes out it doesn’t stop you from gaming or anything time when you feel the need for a good board game with a deep adventure play.
This is an excellent game to play if you have a few hours spare. The story is good and engaging with interesting characters. Someone has to the bad guy though!!
This suppliment brings more map tiles, character cards, archetype decks and various other cards which extend the playability and re playability of the base game.
This also includes a side campaign which can be added to the main campaign in the base set.
Excellent production values.

Unique classes with individual abilities, well thought out campaign with good story, fun leveling experience for both hero players and Overlord, adventures can be played singularly if you don’t want to get into a full campaign, and very detailed, high quality miniatures are only a few reasons that make this game great.
My one and only complaint is that it is a little unbalanced. There are some quests that the heroes steamroll the Overlord and vice versa leading to some very not-fun playtime for the one getting creamed but this by no means happens for EVERY quest.
I Highly recommend giving this a try. I personally can’t wait to dive into the two expansions that have been released so far.
Impressive models and improved game play, reduced tokens and useful play sheets/cards now included in the game.
I like it…..
A nice selection of models provided within the box, I still have to finish painting the contents of the main box but I look forward to these in the near future.
This game is out of this world. The expansion isn’t part of the main quest but adds even more variety to a game already packed with it. I can not recommend it highly enough.
An expansion for the very popular Descent Second Edition dungeon crawler. It introduces some new heroes, new monsters, new map boards, new quests and new travel cards and loot. Features some more highly detailed miniatures to add to your gaming sessions.
Another quality product from Fantasy Flight Games.
A must for anyone who loves Descent: Journeys In The Dark Second Edition.
A great game, and a good improvement on the first edition. I describe Descent to people as pre-packaged D&D, good for casual playing. I’ve so far only played this edition as the Overlord, which is enjoyable because you get to be an opponent of the heroes some of the time rather than the person managing and creating the game. Fantasy Flight Games has also introduced a website that allows you to create new quests for the game. I played the first edition on a weekly basis with a group of friends for over a year, and it would often take us 3 hours to get through an encounter — with the new edition, I’ve been able to play through encounters in just about an hour. I miss some of the complexity of the first game, and I worry that this version of the game is tilted towards the heroes, who are “knocked out” and can get up in a turn instead of having to reenter the dungeon; the Overlord also doesn’t get any type of bonus for killing heroes.
All in all, this is highly
This game is what helped me pull my 12 & 13yo sons away from the XBOX and play board games with me on a regular basis. Having liked Skyrim on the XBOX, they understood the theme immediately and really wanted to do the campaign style playing. Though is can be played not as a campaign, I am not really sure why you wouldn’t. I play the Overlord. We have just about finished “Act 1”. I have won about 75% of the time, but they still enjoy it and I have too. Not too easy, not too hard, though some scenarios do really seem to favor one side over the other. I suspect we will keep playing in this until done and then buy the expansions.
It is a good expansion. More flavor, more quests, but not as many as I thought it would be. Two new classes are solid. My largest gripe is the lieutenant Valyndra. THey give you this massive token rather than a lieutenant token similar to the other lieutenants. I know that some of it is due to her being in “vapor” form. It just seemed to be unnecessary. But my gripes are nitpicky. If you love the original game, you will love this expansion. I do. This is a small expansion, not going to wow or dazzle you with mega changes. It will just give you more flavor to your already existing product.
Even if they decreased the number of miniatures (compared to 1st Edition), and made a smaller box, the game is now fluid and the new rules make finally players think about strategies and not about what they can do… I didn’t like the 1st edition for this reason but now it’s almost perfect! 5 stars game!
The game setup is only a few minutes, possibly 5-10minutes. Not all the spell descriptions are in stated clearly so I would recommend you use the online wiki as a reference. I played as the overload and my other 4 friends played the heroes. I had a lot of fun trying to defeat them and they had a blast. The game is wonderfully balanced. I would recommended that all heroes and overlord read all there skill cards and get use to them. That way when they see them again, you aren’t trying to figure out what they do.
One thing that I’m considering on doing is making custom character sheets. Since the characters are already per-created it kind of takes away from the personal feeling of a character. I think a custom sheet would better fill that void, that way players can name themselves and perhaps draw their own avatar. And they can then use miniature from other games.
We started around 7pm and didn’t notice it was 2am when we stopped. Very fun, I would recommend this game to anyone that loves tabletop. Its quick to setup, easy to make your quest and campaigns.
I bought this to be a simple Dungeon-Crawl game to fill out nights when I wasn’t ready to GM Pathfinder or The One Ring RPGs. Descent Second Edition, isn’t quite the Dungeon Crawler I expected. The “Dungeons” are often outdoors, quite small, and the objectives are almost never to simply kill the enemies.
Much of the time, each Quest, revolves around speed and positioning, racing against time to accomplish an objective, while the Overlord maneuvers his overmatched forces to try to slow/stop you. Sometimes the roles are reversed, but time is always a factor. It seems very well balanced between the Overlord and Player roles, I have played both, and it was tough both times. There is a good selection of Characters for the players, and Monster’s for the Overlord.
The Game plays best as a campaign style, with both Players and the Overlord earning XP as the game advances from scenario to scenario. Depending on the results, different special items/abilities can be gained as well.
The Presentation quality is wonderful, as with most Fantasy Flight games. The mini’s are well made, the cards have nice quality art, and are made from the waxed linen that holds up well to use. The Cardboard Map tiles are solid as well.
All in all, I am very impressed with the game, and have had a blast playing it with my gaming group. Highly recommend!
This was a gift for someone who loves it. Got together with frends and had a great time. Great grea
They seemed to have fixed all the problems from the first edition without losing the depth. A great game for dedicated dungeon delvers.
Really fun game!
If you like dungeon crawler Table top games I would recommend this!
Only thing I would say is that the box was slightly damaged inside when I received the item.
I was a little disconcerted from some reviews I read online (mostly people who owned the original Decent and were grumpy about the change in rules), but recently I decided to just go for it and I regret nothing! This game is a perfect mix of meaty rules, easy set up, and reasonable game length. A while back I was on the search for a rood RPG that harkend to the Heroquest RPG but didn’t cost $250. After scouring 100s of reviews, with my friends, I settled on this gem. I highly recommend this game if you are looking for an RPG that hits all the notes Heroquest had and actually exceeds it in gameplay. Average game time is about 45 minutes which is nice if you can’t dedicate your entire life to an RPG game. If you are trying to decide between Heroquest, Runewars, Small World, War of the Rings or Decent: Journeys in The Dark….go with Decent you won’t regret it.
