The perfect Companion for Twilight Imperium. The box and components are well constructed and durable.
if you know anything about ti4, you will most likely want this, it’s a great expansio
This is just one of the best games ever. Travel space, conquer planets, and maybe even conquer a few other players. The win is up to you…and a few good dice rolls
Long game, but enjoyable every minute. Not as rules heavy as I expected but still decently heavy. An absolute blast, components are well made. Price to content ratio seems about right as well for RRP.
Most people considering buying this probably already know what they are getting into, it’s a very long game, not as complicated as people say it is though.
As much strategy as it is gut check.
As much space opera as it is slugfest.
As much awesome as it is ridiculous.
If you can gather a group of 6 eager gamers you may get a better game out of some other box but NONE will give you the same preposterous thrill-ride that Twilight Imperium has been imparting since the 90s!
If you play TI4 then this is the next logical step as it makes the game so much better. Would buy again if I didn’t already own it.
Amazing game with quality cards and pieces. The ability to make your own map/board is awesome. However this is an intense game to learn! The rule book is huge and even if you read everything that is no guarantee you will grasp it at the beginning.
Incredibly in depth game, my family and I have loved i
For your first game, understand that you won’t get everything right, there will be some debate about the rules, there will be times that you will do some “house rules” just to get past some rules that don’t make sense, AND you will not play your best game: you will not use your faction’s abilities to the optimum, you will not employ the best tactics nor the best strategy for your faction – BUT it will still be rewarding, and you will want to play it again.
In my family will set up the game and played it over the course of days(!), putting in 1 to 2 hours per session. It was loads of fun, and I found myself thinking about the game even when I wasn’t playing. I didn’t win, my 10-year old beat me, but it was because I failed to see a turning point in one case, , and didn’t implement the correct tactic in another. I lost but still had a lot of fun. The loss didn’t diminish the enjoyment … and that’s what gaming should be..
Prophecy of Kings is a worthy expansion to one of the greatest strategy games of all time. If you’re looking for this you’ve probably already played TI4 and know what you’re getting into.
The package arrived in excellent condition and quickly despite this currently being an under-printed game.
Ampliamente recomendado si quieren algo complejo y disfrutable.
I was afraid my copy I bought might have some of the more egregious printing issues I’ve seen, but overall I’d say it’s pretty unnoticeable. The two worst things are the mechs and some of the system tiles, but it’s not even close to as bad as some of the cases I’ve seen
(Ordered my copy from Gamezenter when it was in stock)
This game has everything – quality, complexity, depth, replay-ability, large player community, etc.
I cannot recommend this game enough. It takes a while to learn, and it takes some dedicated friends to actually play a full game, but no other board game offers an experience like this one.
Totally worth it for the hours play.
Best with 6 players but long day. Fast with less but this game is best with 6 due to the politics.
For people who want an all day event. Takes a whole day to play it casually and especially when learning. So be prepared. Must revise the rules beforehand for a smoother game. But in all honesty it’s amazing. Take a look at the Shut up & Sit down review!
After playing TI3 for many years I didn’t think they could make this game even more awesome, but TI4 is better than TI3 in every possible way.
This is my favorite game of all time. It is not very easy to learn but once you get unto it and play a game, everything makes a lot more sense. It is a good mix of Risk and Scythe. Amazing game
My husband is a board game enthusiast and requested this for his birthday. Since we already have the third edition (and we had already spent 2 hours punching out all of the pieces for the last version a few years ago) I was hesitant as to why we had to spend another $100+ on this new version. After playing it, though, I will freely admit that this version is better. The pieces feel great since there is no annoying hard plastic punching required. Some of the new mechanics also create a really nice flow to the game. Everyone is involved throughout the turns. Some of our factions were not completely utilized to their full potential due to some metagaming and how they interacted with each other, but I think this also happens when you have an experienced group that knows how to block power moves before they get out of hand. It took 5 hours for 4 people…not bad for TI…and an hour of that was set up and explanation/ prep. I really like the new ship upgrade cards- these are really helpful and make keeping track of that much easier. Battling and tech upgrades are still tricky to keep track of. All in all, a great game that will keep everyone engaged!
This is the best all day board gaming experience you can have with your friends! It has so many interesting mechanics that it quite literally is almost every board game in one. If you can afford it (it is quite expensive) there is nothing that comes close to this game in scope and grandeur!
My son and husband love this game! It is challenging for some though.
Great game. Well with the cost. You tube has great learn to play videos.
Epic is the adjective used by others board gamers, as with me, to describe Twilight Imperium 4 (TI4). Yes, like the other versions before it, the board game is difficult to learn. Yet the game ‘mechanics’ fit nicely together so as to insure a smooth learning curve; the more you play it, the more Epic TI4 gets. And the more you wanna tell others about it.
I’ve long loved Twilight Imperium and its subsequent expansions. The game is so rich in play, with each player having an asymmetric “character.” And every game played has a different set of objectives, which varies the play style each time you play the game. This edition takes everything that was great about 3rd Edition and streamlines it. 4th Edition is quicker to set up, easier to play, but just as rich as previous versions. If you want additional chunkiness, stick with 3rd Edition. But if you’re looking for the same game streamlined slightly, with instructions that are easier to understand, then 4th Edition is a stellar successor to the 3rd. (And yes, it is still a multi-hour game…)
I’ve played over 30 games so far in person and online. This is the most detailed board game I’ve played. Easy to learn only if you spend the time. Interesting races and hoping for more in an expansion. The online version is great if you don’t have people that can spend 5-7 hours playing in person. The online version is on tabletop simulator.
I never played before I bought it but I’ve always loved strategy games and I’ve heard amazing stories from friends. It turned out to be the best thing for quarantine as me and my roommates are having a blast with it. Things to consider:
1) Check to make sure you know some people who can play and make sure they have the temperament for a long game filled with high stakes combat and diabolical diplomacy.
2) Check out some videos and play guides to make sure this is a game you’d like and help you understand the rules.
3) Be prepared to reference the rules and be forgiving if players make mistakes.
Hope that helps. Have fun!
It arrived on time and in great condition!
The game is awesome. It does take a long time to play (typically between 4-10 hours) but each game you play will be very different. It can be a bit hard to learn how to play. Comes with two manuals.
Greatest board game ever made. Totally absorbing, great depth, great gameplay. A unique experience.
This is a GREAT game. Make no mistake though, it is a monster. Lots to learn, lots of stragedy to get your head around, and lots of time to actually play. 6 hours minimum (with full 6 player count). That said each playthrough was indeed (and I hate this word) epic! Got three under my belt with the same group and am planning a day for the next.
One final point I feel is missed or glossed over in a lot of reviews; this game can be mean.
For example, some races are better at taking what they need from other players. It is mean, but often the best move. Others can get ahead quite easily without conflict, but that means the best way to stop them is to systematically destroy them. Also mean. And often you find yourself in a moment where you CAN win, but you have to betray an earlier agreement with a friend to do it. And not doing it means someone else gets there first. That is so mean it deserves a new term like “@%$# move”.
Keeping in mind you have been at it for 6 hours to this point, everyone has a vested interest in their civilization. Seeing your fleets get destroyed, or worse, seeing an ally suddenly shift their troops to invade you homeworld straight up sucks. If you cant recover from that, or admire the overarching story of growth and betrayal, dont do this game. Stick with cosmic encounter. Still negotiating, but a betrayal after 1 to 2 hours will never hurt like a 6 to 8 hour one.
I own a massive collection of table games, filling an entire set of bookshelves spanning an entire wall of my home. TI4 is the crown jewel. This game is stupidly massive, it takes hours to teach, even more to play. However, a game of TI with a couple of good friends is unlike anything else. The game is well balanced, beautifully tested, and intricate; I play weekly with a group of 4 other guys, and never has the same thing happened twice. Ever game you will find different board states as players choose different factions, set up the board differently, or even just approach strategy from other angles. You’ll laugh, you’ll punch a wall in anger, you may even shed a tear or two.
The box arrived in perfect condition, packaged very well. I HIGHLY recommend you also buy the gamemat if you can find it available.
Amazon was out of stock for weeks. I thought I missed out on grabbing this. Suddenly, they were back!
This is an excellent quality game. Surely not for anyone looking to play a quick and simple game on family game night. It is very complex. If you like complex games and have the patience to learn the rules, you will be extremely happy. Not for kids unless they are extremely mature for their age.
Games like this tend to go up in price quickly, especially after they go out of print. If you’re willing to spend the money, then I’m sure you understand the importance of caring for it. It’s not just a game. Sometimes it’s an investment. 20 years from now I guarantee this will be a rare find and command a very high price.
Have a seat and get relaxed when you first open it because it’s going to take awhile to remove all the punch-outs. Definitely nowhere as taxing as Gloomhaven, but still it’s going to take a bit. Also, the book lists the different pieces but doesn’t show all the tokens so there might be a little confusion about which tokens should be separated or lumped together. I like to organize into different baggies, but the manual didn’t state which tokens go with which colors or races.
I do have some complaints but nothing major. First I hate mini cards. I prefer full size cards. Also, for the cost, I think the tray is kind of cheap and not an optimal layout. Other games at this price point actually have boxes and nice containers for pieces. This game has a great outer box but it’s missing the extras that would really make this achieve a premium quality. Gloomhaven and even Axis&Allies Anniversary Edition blow this game away regarding quality. With those game you feel like the developers cared to deliver premium.
So in summary, the game is complex, fun,, but they cut corners on the quality. I think the reasonable price for this quality and contend is under $100.
This game in one word: EPIC.
This is a game you REALLY need to plan a day for. If you’re just learning, and aren’t quite sure what to do, expect to play like 8-10 hours. I’m not joking.
But if everyone at the table knows the game, and is actively trying to gain points, you’re looking at a game time of about 6 hours.
Awesome components. Awesome game play. Every gamer needs to play at least once in their lives.
If you have five friends with too much spare time and too much love for one another, this is the game for you. Bonus points if you appreciate a space opera setting, mercantile lions, and muttering “pew pew” while you play with your tiny plastic spaceships.
This is a fantastic game for strategy lovers. I’ve always been a fan of Risk, then I fell in love with Axis and Allies. After playing Axis and Allies, I learned about this game, and it is now by far my favorite strategy board game. It is an awesome blend of combat, diplomacy, and trade that really shines with the more players you can get to the table (max 6). The variable game board combined with 17 unique factions to choose from means each game plays a little differently, which is a welcome change for me.
Everything in the game is well-made (cards, map tiles, unit pieces, etc.). I love the variety of combat units, and the lore provided for each faction is very interesting.
All in all, if you have a few people you can get together with for 4-6 hours pretty consistently, I absolutely recommend this game. If you’re looking for a pure war game or for a short game, this may not be for you though.
If you’re new to Twilight Imperium:
– Do you like multi-dimensional gameplay? What about spaceships, politics, and strategy?!? Do you have friends who are willing to invest a day into the game? Also weeks of thinking about how to play and what your strategy will be? If so, this is the game for you. It’s not just fun on the day you play, but leading up to it.
– Note: Make sure to find someone who’s played before and have everyone watch the gameplay videos beforehand. This will help the first game be enjoyable.
– Protip: you win the game by getting points, that doesn’t mean having the biggest baddest military, make sure to go for points!
If you’re trying to pick between TI3 and TI4:
– TI4 is extremely streamlined relative to TI3. Our first game was with 5 players and we used a pre-made map. It took us less than an hour to setup and the game lasted 7 hours playing to 10 points. By the end we all agreed to play 14 points next time (unheard of in TI3). For those who like the extra complexity, I recommend bringing the TI3 box and adding in some of the features you like best to TI4.
– Note: I recommend getting an organizer to go with the game like broken tokens to make setup, gameplay, and cleanup efficie
Guaranteed to take at least 8 hours with 5+ people. Good times
If you like crunchy strategy games with everyone involved with each other’s turn you will love this game. My favorite board game ever. However, it is difficult to get it to the table because games can last for hours.
With all the punch outs and miniatures, I feel like I’m truly creating my own galaxy. Perfect for warmongers who have a god complex. Also, for the truly despicable and stealthy, you can win the game sneakily and out of turn if you’re paying attention. It’s fantastic! First time playing only took around 4 hours, which sounds long, but it didn’t feel long. I can’t recommend this game enough.
Finally bought this game after watching multiple videos about it. As others have said, it is a long game. However, even with it being the first time any of us had played, two of us had learned the rules well enough from a couple videos on YouTube to help teach everyone else how to play that we got rolling fairly quickly. By the end of the second round, everyone had a good enough understanding that the real fun began, and after the game we immediately planned to play the next day (it was a holiday weekend luckily). My group is diverse enough that we were worried a couple of them might have been frustrated trying to learn everything, especially because one gets bored with most longer games, but the rules all make sense and with so many races to choose from, you can find your play style and anyone can have a fun time. If you haven’t watched shut up and sit down’s review of this game, do it. They describe this game perfectly. Would absolutely recommend this game to anyone who has some friends who can all plan a day once in awhile to play, even if it’s once every few months, your group will talk about it well after and will create some great memories.
The art work is vibrant, the miniatures of the ships are surprisingly well made. The rules are extensive but not confusing. My three friends and I played for 14 hours straight to finish and were entertained and engaged the entire time.
I had never played this game before, but the rulebook was one of the best I’ve ever read, which is a huge compliment, because there are a lot of rules to this game.
Unlike many games that have a lot of rules, though, this game is balanced so well that you feel like you can choose so many different strategies and still come out victorious, which keeps individual players from getting a lead and running the table. If they are winning, you just change your approach and mess up their plans.
This is not a casual game, though. If you have players who struggle to remember rules then you will be in for a long game. The rules are ultimate logical and intuitive enough that most semi-experienced gamers who want something a little deeper than what they’re used to should have a blast.
Tightens up what was already an excellent game. All the various components, from the ships the the hexs that make up the board all look and feel much nicer. Game plays faster as well, although its still by no means a fast game. I don’t like a lot of the new art as much, particularly with regards to the playable races, but really the only gripe I have, and doesn’t take away much if anything from the overall excellence of the game.
Such an epic game. So much love used in its creation. Not for the faint of heart or casual gamers though. This is a life choice.
My husband loves playing this game! He has a group of friends that play for hours several times a year. It’s a very long playing game, so not a frequent occurrence.
I’m obsessed. I’d love if map expansions would be released because me and my friends created our own map with the tiles, and it was a blast. We’d love if we could customize the maps even more!
Me and my friends have played this game 5 times now and every time is a new and exciting experience. This game is for those who like a marathon and not a sprint and takes a couple tries to get everything right but would highly highly recommend.
I bought this as a gift. And they love this game. They play the game all the time. It would be nice if they also sold small container for the pieces of the and separated by color for each player of the game.
Lo
Compre para mi hijo, disfruto mucho verlo jugar con sus amigos. Juego de estrategia muy elevado para chavos
First of all, to the other reviewers that say that this board game “is really simple,” you are objectively wrong. This is perhaps the most advanced, rules dense board game on the market, next to Gloomhaven. Don’t get me wrong, I understand some reviewers don’t want to scare you with the rules, but it is misleading to call this game anything but a high skill, time consuming game.
To give you a perspective on the game components in this game, you have 8 strategy cards, an agenda deck, secret objective deck, stage one and two objective deck, technology deck, action card deck and a planet deck. There are 8 separate piles of cards to keep track of in this game and that’s not even mentioning your commodities or promissory notes! This is a fantastic, deeply intellectual sci-fi diplomacy, conquest and negotiations game that is really quite unique. The only other game I could compare it to is Risk, but far more complex with more features and unique abilities. That being said this game is not made for the faint of heart. You will be spending many hours analyzing your next actions and decisions as you attempt to slowly acquire the 10 victory points necessary to win the game. However, if you enjoy deep, tactical and strategic games like chess, you will most likely adore playing this game, as it demands 100% of your brain power to keep track of all the different abilities, cards, actions and possibilities in a single round alone.
Finally, I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys risk, chess or sci-fi themed games in general to at least give it a chance. Amazon has an outstanding refund policy, which essentially mitigates any risk. However, if you only play that one game of life board game with your suburban family once a year, and don’t want to invest yourself in a thematic, complex sci-fi galactic council and conquest board game with a 38 page booklet of rules and clarifications, then pass on this and try another, much simpler (and affordable) sci-fi diplomacy game like Cosmic Encounter.
Probably the best board game. Not much else to say. Played quite a bit of it now.
Do you enjoy hours of incredibly entertaining and overly detailed gameplay? Do you enjoy being a rules lawyer while enjoying a game of political intrigue? Do you like a simple yet thorough combat system? This game is for you.
Seriously loved this game, it’s best with 4+ players in my opinion and has incredible replay value. Though a serious warning, expect your first game to not be finished and take 6+ hours. This is definately a game that will take up your entire kitchen table possibly for days. Gauranteed that you will enjoy every minute of it win or loss.
Love this game. It has a little bit of everything. It can take all day to play but it’s well worth the time and investment. I highly recommend this for serious gamers!
There’s a lot to read but it’s so worth it and it’s so much fu
Such an awesome game! This has kept our friend group connected even though we live in different cities. It was a great investment!
Superb. It does take 8 hours to play, but somehow never becomes boring. An epic space opera that makes for hilarious, tense, tactical and political games. If you’ve got enough keen friends to play, this is great value for all of the entertainment you’ll get out of it.
Just an excellent game. Does take awhile to actually finish a game. Fantasy flight is the best.
Excelente producto para los amantes de los juegos de mesa.
I gave this to my 25 year old son and he loved it. The whole family played it for hours. Very engaging!
Great game, we already played the game several times and love the challenge it is to learn the many different strategies.
This game is outstanding. The 4th edition really makes everything more streamlined and easier to play. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the things you can do, but once you get past that it’s really a large collection of intuitive actions. Don’t think of it as “All these rules I need to know” but as “There are rules here for anything I’d want to do”
This game is awesome, very fun, great replayability and deep strategy. Still you have to have in mind that there’s possibly 8 hours of more of gane ahead of you when you play it.
Absolutely the best boardgame I’ve ever played, hands down. Things to know before buying, if you don’t have at least 4 to 5 people to play with its not that much fun. Almost all the fun is derived from interacting with the other players, bargaining, threatening, and making secret deals.
It requires a large time commitment from everyone involved, my first game with 4 other people took 3 sessions of 4 to 5 hours each. Your mileage may vary depending on the group, it’s also really important to keep the game going and not let people get distracted.
It also requires a large table to be able to play, I have a 4x4ish table and every inch is used with 5 players. All that being said, if you have the cash for it and the friends willing to set aside 8+ hours over potentially multiple sessions.
With all that being said, if you have the cash and the friends willing to set aside the time necessary, it’s absolutely an experience that everyone should have at least once. It will ruin more relationships than monopoly.
Amazing game takes time to learn. Not many will want to play a game for this long lol. But absolutely amazing!!
My husband has played the older version of this with his friends so was very pleased to get the latest one – describes it as Risk in Space. Apparently complicated and takes hours to play but a lot of fun if you like sci fi and strategy games.
Do you like adult games that challenge your intellect, take hours to play, and create unforgettable interactions with friends? Then TI4 might be for you. The structure of TI ensures that no two games will ever be alike, and the debates, deals, back-stabbings, alliances, and epic wars it creates will create stories you’ll recall long after.
The greatest thing about TI is that it’s a game about resource management and strategic decision making. You have so many options available to you, almost all of them good, but you can only pick a few at any given time. The best players will sketch out their plan and make decisions accordingly.
Twilight Imperium requires a good deal of rule learning and your first few games will be learner games. The Rules Reference, subreddit, and Board Game Geek forums are excellent resources that can usually answer your questions quickly.
TI4 is my favorite board game. It requires time, study, and friends will to play, but man is it worth it. Go buy it!
This is the biggest, baddest board game ever created. If you’re looking for the most lifelong memories a box of cardboard and plastic can offer, this is your game.
This boardgame is one of best designed, most thought out games ever made. It is filled with a variety of different options for playing so that it is different each time its played. The miniature ships, tokens, board tiles, and different rules for all the different races make playing it worthwhile and meaningful.
I finally played this game yesterday with five other brand new players and we had a total blast. It took a hecking long time (9+ hours, with breaks) but that was mostly because we were all learning as we went along. Every aspect of the game is exciting and it really feels like a grand space opera playing out on your dinner table. I couldn’t recommend it more highly and that’s after just one play through. If this sounds like your bag and you can find a reasonably committed group of people to play with, you owe it to yourself to get this game.
This game is well balanced, loads of fun, and the quality of the pieces are excellent. It’s our new favorite.
Had so much fun playing this with my friends! Only downside is it takes hours to finish.
Reasons to buy this game:
1. You dig the idea of Space Lions
2. The words “strategy”, “tactics”, “diplomacy”, and “back-stabbing” make your happy bits tingle.
3. You know 4-5 other people with whom you would enjoy spending a whole day of gaming.
4. Having two books worth of rules and a lore book all in the same box gets you a little giddy with excitement.
Reasons not to buy this game:
1. You think the concept of Space Lions doesn’t make much sense and you just want to go back to watching America’s Got Talent
2. You think Settlers of Catan is a deep strategy game and you think Carcassone lasts a bit too long.
3. You fail to see that taking a negative attack modifier to gain an advantage in tech researching is absolutely worth it
4. The phrase “40 pages of rules” makes you wrinkle your nose and suggest that maybe the group could just play Cards Against Humanity again.
An amazing game! Complex and fun. Not for the faint of heart. To learn this game will take you hours but it is worth absolutely every minute.
My gaming friends and I go through withdrawals if we don’t play it often.
If you have a group of friends that love complex and thought provoking games, buy this now, you will not regret it.
The 17 races you have to play are varied and have many nuances, tons of fun to learn how to play and how to defend against.
Very elaborate agendas and laws to vote on during the game can change the game significantly. So can the repeal of the laws to totally mess with your friends.
Only real drawbacks are some rules aren’t explained well, but you can look at multiple websites and fansites for clarification. You can even ask questions of the experts at Fantasy Flight Games. I asked a question of them and they responded via email within a couple days. Answered the question precisely.
One more thing, make sure ypu have a TON of space to play, so many parts and the board is huge.
If you have 4-8 hours to play something this is the game for you. No 2 games are ever exactly the same, certainly worth the price.
Okay, in interest of full disclosure, I will list my ‘Cons’ first: a card misprint in the Technology decks for the 6 sets of playing pieces. Also, typical game takes 5-9 hours for a full play-through (this doesn’t faze me, but some gamers would find it daunting).
Now to the ‘Pros’: the game is an epic space opera that succeeds on many levels… it lends itself to role-playing, but also is strategically deep. It is a 4X space-opera with a grand scale and fleshed-out backstory. There are opportunities for player interaction generously spread throughout play, including trade, diplomacy and voting. There is a good balance between ‘perfect information’ and ‘random elements’, the latter including variable victory point conditions, and decks of player and voting cards. The factions that the players can play cover a range of qualities, from the strong and warlike to the subtle and sneaky. So far, I have played over a dozen sessions, and keep discovering new dimensions to play. Highly recommend!
Bonkers money for this, but our lad wanted it for his birthday and he reckons it is the dogs bits… He says there is Huge gameplay to be had and since him and his crew like board games, 5 stars it is…! Too heavy for me, I will stick to Yoo Loo … (that is five stars too, and really simple…two reviews in one!
It’s one of the all-time greats – if you can get a good squad to play it with. I would focus on that as your main consideration for whether this game is worth your purchase. If you can assemble at least 4 people then I would say go for it. I think it’s best played with the max number of players (6), but four or five work just fine.
If you have the right group of people, who like to interact, exchange, betray and you are also fine with that, this is the perfect game for you.
One way to be sure to invest the money in this game is to read the “Learn to play” on the official website of Fantasy Flight games.
Real playing time is around 12 hours, but time passes so fast playing this game.
Looking forward to play this game again.
This game is amazing. It has everything. That being said, make sure you have friends who are willing to devote a day to playing.
So far played two very good and very different games. A 6 player trade/cold war game and a 4 player warfare/scheming pacts game. I wouldn’t normally rate 5 star after two games but the content has been so good it’s hard to imagine even a subpar game dropping below 4 stars.
Although expensive and vast I would recommend if you have some spare cash and some equally minded (or patient) friends.
A very complex and deep victory points game. Yes you have a starfleet, and yes there are attack dynamics, but to win you must score more points than your opponent. Its extremely rules heavy, almost to the point of being an RPG. Be sure to block of 8 hours to play, but those are 8 wonderful hours caught in a grand space opera. Big downside it that the box insert is barely adequate. Its important to bag each factions stuff together and then pray it all fits.
The game arrived in excellent condition. However you will need several plastic baggies or a tackle box to keep all the pieces sperate.
This might be the best board game ever made. Complex, but not needlessly so. For a game that can take 8+ hours, it never feels slow. Every decision matters, and there’s enough verity in play style that we never have one person just runaway early and win the game. Take the time for everyone playing to read the rulebook beforehand, and you will keep coming back to TI.
Incredible game, but be warned takes the best part of a day to play (especially with 5-6 players).
This game is amazing. I got it based on reviews to play with friends. After the first game they told their friends about it and they’re now traveling 2 hours to play it here. Given how long it takes they may need to spend the night though…
This game is remarkable! A full experience. I loved TI3 and this is an improvement in nearly every way. The political system is more substantive, the tech tree overhauled, the player cards and UI improved drastically, new and improved beautiful artwork (except Clan of Saar!) ,… and yes, the War Suns have bottoms 🙂 This game is streamlined and clean, and plays much easier than the previous edition. A game takes about 50% – 75% as long with my group of friends and the pacing is way better. Less turtling and fewer huge fleets and more tight, strategic play and dynamic, VP-driven action. It incorporates nearly all of the expansion elements too, which is just great. A+ game.
Worth the upgrade from the 3rd edition (I own and have played both). Better and more streamlined game play. Better quality and detailed game pieces. Ships come pre separated, which if you are like me and your fingers where bleeding after separating them for the 3rd edition, this is a huge pro. The art work for the galaxy tiles are nicer as well. The race sheets where reworked and improved their functionality.
TI4 is the worst game I’ve played for 2 months daily. Just the worst, I cant wait to play it again.
T.I. 4th Edition is a large improvement over 3rd Edition. It includes everything from the base game as well as all additional races from the 3rd Edition expansions as well as most of the base rules all in one box. The rules for action cards, technology, trade, and diplomacy are completely overhauled to provide a better experience with less rules restrictions without allowing certain races to cheese their way to victory with one game mechanic. Definitely worth the money if you’re a fan of complicated board games or scifi.
This game has reputation of being complex and taking long time. THe game is rather simple but sheer number of options available to players can slow down game. It is important to play this with players who do not over-analyze their moves. Once you have group that is familiar with the game, it takes about 4-5 hours to play. This is 4-5 hours of pure 4x fun. Very few games give you this type of gameplay. If you want something faster and with easier learning curve, try Eclipse.
Phenomenal game! The criticisms of it being a beast to learn are not the case, maybe were when it was created 25 years ago but it is easy to learn once you get going. Also some are put off by how this game typically takes a long time to play (1.5-2 hours per player) but every player is engaged the whole time because actions taken by opponents allow you to take actions as well. Thus when it is not your turn you are still highly engaged. TI:4 has massive replay-ability seeing as it has a modular design and there are 17 races that come in the box. This creates more possible combinations than I will ever get to the table, but I am excited to try to do so. Cannot wait to get this to the table again. Easily one of my favorite games in my collection now.
Twilight Imperium is definitely the best board game of all time. I have played more than 60 3rd Edition games and getting the 4th Edition truly was a breath of fresh air, new and streamlined mechanics helped make the game even better.
For anyone who loves a great strategy game, this is it, buy it now and never look back.
Gift to my adult son. He and his friends raved that his parents are so well connected to his age group’s interests.
This is probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing a board game. There are countless scenarios that can play out and it is a lot of fun fighting for control of the universe against your friends. The only problem I have with it is I wish I had time to play it more (because the games take several action filled hours).
Fantastic game, timely arrival, much more streamlined than 3rd edition. There is a misprint on one of the cards so hoping fantasy flight games sends out a replacement tech cards for the misprint but overall I’m very pleased with this purchase. 10/10 would recommend.
Beautifully made game; I’ve heard a lot about this one for a while, but once you get the rules down, its an amazing game to play. You need to set a day aside to get through it though.
Got this after watching the documentary and review on Shut Up & Sit Down, and had a BLAST playing it with a group that has played TI3 in the past. The refinements versus the 3rd edition are incredible, as is the build quality. Now I just hope that Broken Token will make a box organizer for it!
Gioco arrivato leggermente in ritardo rispetto ai tempi programmati, ma d’altronde l’ho comprato fuori italia perch nessuno dei miei amici, me compreso voleva attendere la versione in italiano. Imballaggio perfetto, il gioco corrisponde alla descrizione. Non manca nulla.
Let’s play.
As an Eclipse player I always wondered about the 3rd edition of this game, so when 4th was announced I decided to take the plunge.
After playing a 5 player game for 7 hours I’m in love with this game! So many options all the time and the politics and trading that are missing in eclipse make this game amazing. It’s so fun to threaten, negotiate and bully the other empires then alley and backstab!
So this is just a preliminary review as I haven’t played this edition yet so take it for what it is worth. All of the pieces are amazing. I really only have one complaint which isn’t a huge deal, but I was kind of pissed when I found out that there aren’t any bags for the command and control tokens. I used snack sized ziplocks, but I wish it would have come with them. For me 5 stars is perfect so 4 stars isn’t a bad review from me.
If you have the time and the friends to play, this game is a must. Deceptively simple, but lot’s of moving parts and a beautiful design. Just a great game.
