Looked around for a decent lock for a shipping container. The firm we bought it from recommended this lock and could supply one if needed. Shopped around and Amazon was the best price I could find at the time.
Does the job and seems decent quality. The keys are just normal type so don’t strike me as very high security but once the lock is in a lock box can see it being very difficult to get at and remove.
Expensive compared to lot of the other locks out there but gives peace of mind if its insurance rated and has a boron shackle.
Excellent lock, very easy to use. The only issue was getting the keys out of the packaging as tough plastic but at least they were secure.
Solid!- The “ne’r-do-wells” will probably have to Dynamite the door to get pass this lock.
I recently bought one of these for my scooter, partially because the insurance company mentioned it in their application form and partially because the padlock that came with my chain was really unimpressive.
Mine is the 55mm model, which is big enough for a single loop of chain, as in the picture. I can’t rate its effectiveness because after two months no-one seems to have had a go at it. My hunch is that it’s not impregnable, but you can mitigate that by parking next to a scooter that has a cheaper-looking lock – on the “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you” principle.
The little instruction sheet says it’s a CEN 4 lock. It came with two keys; replacements are about 20. The weatherproof flap at the bottom works, but after a downpour the lock does retain water, so it’s a good idea to shake it out when you unlock it. It holds the key in place until you close the lock, which threw me at first but I suppose it stops the key falling out when you’re fiddling with a chain.
And it’s rubberised, so I don’t worry too much about it scratching the contents of my scooter’s storage bin. Which is nice.
Very strong and secure padlock excellent quality would definitely recommend
Excellent product, and you def get what you pay fo
I use this to secure the ramps on my trailer, it’s exposed to all the water, grime and road salt chucked up under the trailer. No issues with it in 2 years, no sticking or corrosion. The cap on the bottom seems to work well and stay secure. The lock’s a decent size and robust with a good cylinder.
Well worth it, a good purchase.
Second time buying a squire ws75, they play out in all weather with high security rating and are UK made
This lock is outstanding. No maintenance for 5 years out in all weather and no problems.
You get what you pay for. As pointed out by other review. It won’t stop an angle grinder. Guess what! Nothing will resist that for more than 3 minutes. NOTHING.
I bought this to upgrade my bike locker security after my bike getting stolen after thieves used bolt cutters to break in. I was unsure if this lock would fit, it does just. it’s bolt cutter proof, leaves no room for cutter to get to the shackle, add a couple of washers and there’s zero chance, I just hope it’s strong against hammer blows, but it looks and feels solid, has a water resistant key cap, and comes with 3 keys. Highly recommended.
Extremely strong and sturdy lock and worth the money if you want to protect something!
Great, sturdy safe. Worked very well in the last 2 months.
The first thing I noticed when picking this up was the weight, this isn’t your cheap pound shop lock, this lock means business and has a hefty weight.
It’s coated in rubber and weatherproof. I’m using this on a shed so it fits the bill. The base with the keyhole has a rubber bit that pops on and off. You get 2 keys with it.
The lock is designed in a way that the shackle is hidden into the padlock leaving little space for cutters or snips to get to it.
I like i
Not a huge amount I can say about a padlock. But this beauty is a beast! I have never seen a standalone padlock like it.
Super chunky, super tough I have no doubt this will last a lifetime! The key area at the bottom has a proper click on cover to keep water lut of the mechanism so even more protection.
My girlfriend now uses this to secure her work equipment in place (her gear needs to be left at a location for up to 3 days and is worth over 15k) as it will take some serious powered equipment to breach!
I don’t really know what i can say about this padlock other than it’s an absolute beast of a padlock, the incredible hulk of padlocks.
Squire are a well known and well trusted brand this padlock is very good quality, it has a baron shackle, 80% stronger than steel, I like how the padlock is coated with like a rubberised material to stop the padlock feeling so cold in your hand , great for unlocking it in a cold freezing morning.
I like how the keys are a good size too, some padlock keys are for too small and misplaced easily and fiddly to use , the keys are nice and big and the padlock is easy to unlock and use, not fiddly one bit.
There is like a rubber flap at the bottom too that protects the key hole , stops dirt or rust building up , that’s a nice feature.
Overall this is a solid padlock, very well presented with nice features, but built like a tank using premium quality materials.
This will now guard our garden lockup , our tools and some kids toys , I’m confident it will do a great job too.
A solid padlock, would recommend.
Really durable and weatherproof. The lock seems smooth and the keys are strong. Would recommend.
Really pleased with the lock, good price, delivered really quickly and does what it’s supposed to do
I can confirm that this is a CEN 4 lock which I can only thank another reviewer for pointing out else I would have gone looking for a different lock make; as it isn’t mentioned in the description at the time of purchase. FYI the CEN rating is a European lock rating/security standard. I wanted to make sure I could prove to my insurer I had taken suitable precautions when locking the container at a new storage facility. Rather than just buying a cheap standard lock!
So to get the keys out you need to score through the label around the plastic door hidden (secure ) under the label on the front. See unboxed picture.
For the rest well it’s a lock and it functions like a lock and unless someone breaks it I’ll hopefully continue to consider this a wise purchase.
A very solid lcok that you would expect at the price. Idela for containers locks
If you want to protect your valuables stored in your container, look no further.
Easy to use, and solid as a rock.
I have already had an attempt at trying to cut it and they failed, miserably.
Worth its weight in gold
We own a good few Squire locks. We just had the situation that our insurance wanted us to get a different lock for the Squire SS80CS ( they have new lists for CEN6 locks accepting only certain cylinder brands and types) . After not getting much help here in the Irish Midlands I contacted Squire UK. Very professional and thorough. Ordered the complete Upgrade set for the Mauer NW4 for a very fair price . We were also offered an exchange of the lock by the Squire Technicians in UK AND postage paid by Squire which I find not only thoughtful but very generous. Since we think that our specialist here should be able to do the exchange we didn’t use this offer, but do appreciate this way of customer service very much! That is SQUIRE for you! (Thanks Marian!!)
Update: received the Mauer lock, easy to install. This seems to be quite a mechanism, judging by the complexity of the key. Even though I believe that the Squire 6-Pin S Lock is an excellent and safe locking mechanism, I do admit that the Mauer NW4 system is quite something. I recommend this upgrade if you really wish to own nearly ”undefeatable” padlock or your Insurance requires you to do so. Pricewise it is a no brainer, just a touch over 60.- including postage from Squire GB to Ireland, VAT and everything you need to change the lock. The standard SS80CS is a CEN6 lock, with the Mauer NW4 it is sold as a CEN6+ padlock.
A mate used a cheap lock in a lock box. Bought cheap, cost him to cut open the lockbox and cut the seized lock. Plus he had to buy a new lock. I simply copied his choice of replacement lock. British made too.
Appears to be an extremely robust and solid lock. This lock has a CEN rating of 4 (CEN4 – I was surprised this information was not detailed in the Amazon listing) which at this price point (49 at time of this review) is exceptionally good value. The packaging details a 10 year guarantee and also describes the lock as “all weather”. It is easy to operate. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a container or straight shackle lock.
Oh this thing is a beast. Comes very well greased and also the email support from the manufacturer is excellent. Just give it some love every now and then and it’ll last decades. The barrel is replaceable as well which is handy as this is the part most likely to fail in time with general use. The only thing I’d say is it would be nice if there was a cover for the key hole but you can easily put some tape over that if you’re in an environment that warrants it. It will take a 19mm chain. I would definitely buy this thing again.
And yes, an angle grinder will take it out. The difference is that this is unlikely to be cropped by hand tools. This means they must make a lot of noise to get through it. What you’re looking for with security is to add time, noise and inconvenience to the thief. This increases the risk and you want them to look at your security and decide that the risk is not worth the gain. If you therefore have a high value motorcycle then the gain is huge and they’ll go all out and prepare and nothing will stop them – they’ll be in with powertools and have it gone in a van. If you’re doing this for a mediocre bike (like mine!) then they’re just going to look at it and go elsewhere as there will be easier pickings. Combine this with a decent chain (remember you’ve spent a few grand on a bike so a couple of hundred to stop it going walkies is relatively small change – if you cheap out on the chain you’ll lose the bike easily, I know, I’ve done it) and some variety of noisy thing (my preference is an alarmed disc lock as the bloody thing wails like mad and also smashing one off to wheel the bike away is noisy and damages the bike they want to later sell) and you’ll make it so difficult to steal that they’ll just move on to softer targets.
This is a very well built, durable lock. A police officer friend was quite impressed. However, the lock has a very useful feature that means it won’t release the key if the lock isn’t locked properly. The lock I have isn’t functioning properly, and often won’t release the key. When it does, the lock works perfectly, but it can be frustrating at times to have to align the shackle so very precisely to make a good seal. In a way, it’s good that the manufacturing tolerances are so precise, as it shows a very high level of craftsmanship. It’s something of a pain in the bum, though, when it’s pouring with rain and your padlock is playing you up.
Cheaper than high street prices, this is a heavy and tough lock for your expensive items. Heavy!!
Shame about the low reviews – that was about the wrong item being delivered.
Great padlocks, have used several over the years and they have not been broken, even though attempts have been made. We do not look at any other makes when buying new padlocks.
I bought this lock knowing that the Squire product is a leading brand. I’m using this lock to secure my garage and as of now i have not had a break in or attempted break in to my garage. The lock itself is very heavy and feels very solid indeed. The locking mechanism ensures that you can only remove the key once the lock is locked so there is no chance you could think you have actually locked it when actually you have not , a great feature in my eyes. The only downside about this lock is that the tumber started to rust after about 8 months (i used WD40 to lubricate it. I have since found out that it is best to use a dry graphite powder to lubricate locks rather than use a liquid) . These locks are guaranteed for 10 years so i returned the lock to the manufacturer and they quickly replaced the tumbler and it now works as good as new. I would definately recommend this product.
1 kilo in weight the lock is a proper theif deterant.
i have one of these with a 1.5 and 2 meter almax chain. unbreakable lock and chain. nothing except a angle grinder and time will get through this. if you want to protect something use this.
no one will even look twice once they see it.
