I bought this for use at my office, which has a fairly long walk to the closest microwave, so I don’t keep having to heat up my coffee. I’ve had it for about 2 months and it works perfectly. Even though I’m not really a “smart device” person, I set the temperature on the app once and have not had to fuss with that since. The device seems to know whether or not there’s liquid in the cup, so it turns on when I pour in my coffee and turns off when I’m done. I keep it on the charging plate pretty much at all times, so I haven’t really tested the battery life. The reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of one little design annoyance that the designers didn’t quite think through: the plug. I would think a small device like this would have just a regular old plug, but instead the plug is a box that extends 3 inches below where it actually plugs in, much like I would expect from a larger electronic device. Because I’m using this at my desk with a power strip (where my monitor also has a large plug), it prevents me from being able to plug everything in at once. I would suggest updating the design so the plug swings out to the side rather than down.
I’ve had three mugs during the past few years that stopped working. They either wouldn’t hold a charge or the “pins” on the coaster stuck down, making charging impossible.
Customer service is available if you can wait a few days for an emailed response.
As advertised, this cup dials in your coffee to the temperature that you prefer and holds it for a little over an hour. Things to note this is a hand wash only item and do not use a metal spoon to stir or at least be careful not so bang the sides. Luckily I read this beforehand and corrected my ways before use.
Then the battery won’t hold a charge. Lasts about 10 minutes at this point (if that). I have an extra tray to keep it on so it’s not a HUGE deal for me, but if you didn’t, it would be a pain. I’d recommend it if you could get this much time out of it, though the fact that it just dies after effectively 20 months is a little shifty. Battery level won’t go above 5%
Anyway, just keep it in mind if you get one.
This was a gift and gets used every day. The coffee stays hot all morning the charge holds and is easy to replace when needed. The black cup is sleek and comfortable to hold.
This is a great product and I love it and I will use it every day. The The only slightly disappointing thing is it only keeps a drink warm for about an hour. As many other reviewers have said, however that is still much better than your piping hot coffee going cold in the same period of time. So it’s disappointing that It doesn’t meet the claims, nevertheless it’s still a great product, hence my four star rating and I’m happy I bought i
Bought for my mom for mother’s day and she LOVES it. She literally uses it every day at work and loves that she can drink her coffee slowly with out it getting cold.
I gave this to my son-in-law for Christmas, and he loves it and uses it every day. Only mug he now uses, I hear, which I would say is the mark of a perfect gift.
Bought this as a gift for my husband. He loves it soo much and uses it every day. Easy to use with the phone pairing. Keeps the coffee and tea at the perfect temperature for as long as you need. Might buy for myself and great gift idea for anyone else
I absolutely love the Ember mug as it keeps my coffee hot. I’m a slow coffee drinker so it’s nice to have every sip the same temperature. My only complaint is that the battery does not last as long as expected. I try to keep it on the charging platform on my desk to help extend the battery life.
I LOVE this mug and use it every day. However, I previously purchased a mug in the same color as my ceramic mugs and I accidentally put it in the microwave and that was the end of it. DON’T put it in the microwave and you’ll be fine! my replacement Ember mug is in a different color .
I like my coffee hot. I have a mug warmer on my desk that can be set to 131, 149, or 167 degrees, and I find the highest setting to be perfect. I take a while to drink a cup of coffee, and almost never finish a cup (or repeatedly microwave it) because it is gets cold. I hoped this Ember mug might keep the coffee warm for my first couple of cups of the day, when I’m not at my desk using the mug warmer.
It doesn’t. The highest temperature setting for the Ember mug is 145 degrees; cooler than I prefer but still acceptably hot. But I’m guessing that the 80 minutes they promise is based on a lower temperature setting. The mug shows a white light when your selected temperature is reached. Since the coffee is hotter than 145 degrees when I first fill the cup, it immediately glows white. When the white light starts flashing, that means the Ember mug is warming the coffee to maintain the temperature, and when it turns red, that means the battery has died and it is not warming anything. The light usually goes to red just as I’m finishing my first cup. No doubt it draws a lot of current from a battery to run a heating coil, and more so for a higher temperature. At least for my slow coffee drinking ways, it apparently needs a bigger battery.
So why do I still like it? I know that my first cup of coffee for the day will be hot from start to finish, without multiple trips to the microwave.
As a regular tea drinker, I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be able to set my tea to the exact degree I prefer and have it stay that temperature to the last drop. No more reheating in the microwave!
Received this for Christmas from my wife. Good looking mug and the app is easy to use, though I rarely use it. I’ve used this mug every day for the past 6 weeks with zero issues. It definitely keeps your coffee warm and it isn’t hot to the touch at all. However the handle isn’t the most comfortable and the battery isn’t going to last long, which will be a problem if you drink multiple cups and don’t have the charger on your desk.
I was skeptical to buy this mug, worried about some of the issues posted here. But the concept was exactly what I was looking for. I drink my coffee slowly throughout the morning, and before having my Ember mug, I would microwave my cup of coffee 3-4 times before finishing it. I’ve been using the Ember mug almost every day since buying it more than 3 years ago. It works absolutely perfectly. Keeps my coffee the perfect temp for me (I have it set to 136F). I haven’t had a single issue with anything—it charges, holds it charge, and the mug itself looks like it did the day I got it. I do take good care of it but my co-worker has one and she takes very bad care of it and hers is still working perfectly as well. Highly recommend this mug.
I started looking at Embers in 2020 when I started working from home. I just couldn’t justify spending $150 for a coffee cup, and ended up buying a coffee warmer instead. And while there is nothing wrong with my $20 coffee warmer…it sits in my home office, and that is not the only place I drink coffee. I really wanted to be able to enjoy a hot cup of coffee anywhere.
I finally bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn’t be happier! It works as advertised and stays charged for about 1.5 hours. The mug, itself, is beautiful and feels great in your hand.
The only negative thing I would report about this product (which really isn’t a big deal for me) is that it does take several hours to fully charge. So, if you do run the battery down, it’s going to take several hours before you can really use it and walk away from the charger for any length of time again.
I ended up buying a second charger, so I can have one upstairs in my office, and one downstairs. At the end of the work day, I wash it out, and leave it charged downstairs. Chargers are highly portable, so if I’m sipping away on a leisurely weekend day, I just move the charger to where I am hanging out.
Highly recommend.
This product wouldn’t pair with the app. I followed all of the trouble shooting advice and nothing worked. Customer service only through email or text and they are slow to respond. Will probably return and get a Nextmug so I won’t have to deal with this. Life is too short.
Updating my review because now that I got it paired with the app it’s a nice mug and provides an enjoyable coffee drinking experience. Still knocking off a star because I never heard from customer service and pairing required quite a bit of tinkering.
Ok I have to admit it that I was too skeptical about purchasing this mug. I mean I never thought that I would spend $100 over a mug. However, I work remotely and I take my time drinking my coffee, so I thought why not giving it a shot. I am in love with it. I told all my team in company about it. My only complaint is the app, and that’s why I took one star off. The app is glitchy and I have to restart the app several times before it gives me accurate reading. This company really needs to invest in developing a bug free app for Android (don’t know how it is on IOS)
This is a great mug for keeping your beverage hot. No, the battery will not last all day, but for me, it lasts long enough.
The problem is not with the mug but with the charging coaster design. When the mug is placed on the charger, the battery in the bottom of the cup naturally warms up a bit. The coaster is cooler so condensation form in a ring which goes right over the spring activated charging pins. (see photo) In time, this dampness causes corrosion and at least one pin will get stuck down. There is another picture in the reviews showing the damaged pin.
An electronic handyman would be able to change the pins but that’s a hassle. I haven’t found another solution yet beside wiping the moisture away. Maybe a drop of WD40?
Ever get annoyed because your coffee always gets cold too soon? Microwaved coffee is nasty. I was skeptical, but this thing really works. It’s got a lot of features and an app for your phone which lets you adjust temp & stuff. But heck, it works great right out of the box.
It looks classy too. The power light is just right, not annoying but informative. Really great.
I never thought I’d spend this much on a heated mug. After all, can’t I get a fancy Stanley or Thermos mug for $20-30. This mug is so much better!
This mug keeps it at a constant temperature. You select the temp on the app. It took almost no time to set it up. The instructions say it keeps coffee hot for 80 mins, but I get at least 90 minutes. It’s a good size. It’s easy to clean. It’s a little heavier so I don’t I’ll be knocking it over.
I can’t drink out of anything else now. I even took it on vacation. I highly recommend i
I was skeptical if this was worth the price point. I tried the desk hot plate warmer but those don’t regulate the temperature. So if let it sit for 40 mins it can be burning hot.
The battery life works fine for me. I get at least an hour or more depending on heat setting . Someone reported a 15 mins battery life but that sounds incorrect or possibly defective. I keep my coffee temp at the standard 135 degrees for 60+ mins every morning.
I wish there was some type of manual setting for temp or on/off. It seems like everything must be done when paired on your phone through their App. That’s the only downfall. I need their app to do everything, even turn on/off the heater.
My wife was always having to warm up her coffee after long meetings. This is perfect to keep it warm and the battery life is fine if she’s gone from her desk for a few hours.
This is a great gadget. My espresso machine is turned up to as hot as possible, and my coffees are still not as hot as I’d like. Then came this mug, and now my coffee is piping hot! It’s an excellent addition to my morning coffee experience and highly recommended. It’s ridiculously expensive, but so worth it.
I purchased this mug after I had weight loss surgery because I couldn’t drink my coffee very fast and it’s nothing short of amazing. I think I could have avoided 3 cups of coffee in the past if I had just had this mug because I can sip it. It keeps my coffee PIPING hot for at least 1.5 hours (why I gave it the 4 stars instead of 5 because it advertises 2 hours) but i’m still really pleased! Totally worth the money in my opinion. It’s easy to clean with soap and a sponge, then just set it back in it’s charger to get ready for the next morning. I ordered the larger one because there is a large section of the cup for the “battery” so the large one holds more coffee.
Gave it to my son for Christmas. He loves it. So it must work great!!
Keeps coffee warm for hours! Set your favorite temp and sip here and there without the drink getting cold. Ii love it!
This coffee cup has been an enjoyable addition to my morning routine. The App interface, which allows you to change the temperatures as desired and get feedback on charge level and status, is quite intuitive. I do not use any utensils to stir anything inside the cup, so I cannot comment on other observations about susceptibility to chipping. It seems to be fine for hand washing and drying and putting it back on the charger. I am also glad I purchased the larger size.
Seven days of use so tentative review but it all works as it’s supposed to. The software has not required re-pairing to the Ember. Being able to walk around with the cup and not have it too tethered to a heating coaster is a good feature.
The battery charge is enough for leisurely sipping all the way through the mug and a refill. But in my experience the charge always runs out during the third mug, so now I tend to keep the coaster near and use it some of the time.
145 F turns out to be hot enough but just barely. Didn’t realize I favoured the hotter temps of coffee drinking but apparently so. If you add cream, you’ll find it drops the temp a lot so if your 2nd or 3rd cup is coming out of the pot not as hot as your first, and then you add cream, your temp will be 130F or so. The cup is not designed to heat your coffee from a lower temp. For me it’s managed to get a up up from 130F to 145F but slowly, and I’ve taken to heating water in the kettle to pre-heat the Ember for each cup. It’s winter and the house is colder so maybe this will be less necessary in other seasons.
The heating function doesn’t turn off immediately as soon as it’s empty so it does tend to cook some coffee onto the bottom surface after your last sip, but I’ve found it to be easy to clean.
I had sipper mug lids that fit this cup already in my cupboard so you may already have something that fits. A lid does improve the heating efficiency a lot if you’re trying to raise the temp after adding cream.
So, overall I use this the same way as I used any other cup, still pre-heating with water from the kettle etc., but the difference is the last sip is as hot as the first sip. That alone makes it worth it.
Very tricky to remain connected to an android phone. Ember IT could resolve this, although maintains chosen temperature with or without Bluetooth once synchronized.
The little traveling coffee pot.
Keeps coffee hot.
Only possible drawback is I have the app on my phone and have to pair the mug everytime I leave home. Maybe it’s me. There has to be a solutio
Got this as a gift for my daughter. She absolutely loved it!
Does exactly what it says. It keeps my coffee nice and hot for a long while. Does not cook the coffee just keeps it hot. Feels solid in the hand and doesn’t give off a metallic or off taste.
I had no idea how much I would love this mug! You really do enjoy your drink, ALL of your drink, when it’s the right temperature. No more dumping out half drank tea or hot cocoa. Quick and secure delivery from Certified Brands.
Well, I gave this as a gift, but quickly found out since it can’t be microwaved, it’s a problem for them. It’s easier to microwave cold coffee than to try to use this to get there, even though this helps keep it warm.
Also, since most people just sit at a desk anyways, a plug-in hot plate for drinks is more practical and cost-effective; plus you can use whatever mug you want that way.
It’s a fun gift for the coffee drinker, but it’s probably just an expensive toy for many.
The ember coffee mug is simply awesome! It keeps your coffee at the perfect temperature thru and thru…what a difference this makes in a quality cup of coffee! Also, I truly like the quality feel of the mug itself and the charger. It’s worth the cost for regular coffee drinkers and work from home. Now ember needs to develop a lid that complements it’s elegant design, not just your typical plastic lid used by other brands. Highly recommended.
I bought this for my partner who was constantly getting up to microwave their coffee since they like it so hot they can only sip i
Too technical. Too many steps. And what if you don’t have a smartphone?
I’ve tried everything to keep my coffee and tea warm. In the winter, we keep the temperature low, which means my coffee gets cold even faster. And over the years, I’ve learned to drink it ice cold. The cost of the Ember kept me from buying one. But it was a great investment. Since I bought it, my hot beverages have always been at the right temperature. I went to visit family over the holidays and ended up with a cold cup of coffee–and it was awful! I may have to start bringing my Ember with me when I travel.
2hr charge for a hour and 45 last time. Does a great job keeping my espresso hot. Heavy with a premium feel. 10/10 for any coffee love
Bought this as a Christmas gift for the wife. She loves a cup of coffee in the morning. The family stood around the cup and looked at it like a bunch of cows looking at a new gate. Everyone was impressed. It keeps coffee hot and you can adjust the temperature by blue tooth with your phone. A very unique gift. I suspect other family members will own one soon.
My first review was 1 star because I never revived it on time come to find out Fedex is to blame sending it all over the place before it got to my house MY Apologies great produc
I like the constant hot coffee, however I purchase the 14oz cup and it overflowed when I made 12 oz of coffee. The mis representation was annoying and a bit false advertising. Perhaps it should state the true amount as 12oz and not 14oz. Wondering how the designers got this sooo wrong. If the price is determined by size, you owe me a refund.
Love this mug…it not only keeps my coffee at the perfect temperature, the texture of the cup feels right. It also does not absorb odors like the plastic one. Perfect cup at las
This is really nice for those who want a constant temperature for their hot beverage throughout the drinking experience regardless of numerous interruptions at the company desk or home office. Good solid feel.
Very nice for mulled beverages which benefit from steeping.
This is my 2nd Ember mug ,I use the 6 Oz expresso version with ease and no problem with the mug or app. This version is a Tina little strange but works as advertised.I charge the battery up to,100% and the light turns green,But right taking it off the charger it drops down to 91%,the heater will still make it through my 1.5-2 cups drinking within 2 hours. That includes the cooldown time when the coffee is about 150 out 9f the degrees out of the pot until it reaches 135.It stays at 135 very easily and at that temperature I get the best flavor out of the coffee,After about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours the app reads 6% ,which seems to stay there for quite awhile. The Ming works fine it just strange it like to start at 91% and the “bottom” is 6%.It does a good job at turning off when empty and reading temperature quickly.Great for slow coffee drinkers, excellent gift and very neat construction. It’s better than just a gimmicky idea for the serious coffee fan.Hopefully a software update for the mug will fix the strange battery readings.
I’m a mom of young kiddos. I’m never able to enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning. I’m always microwaving multiple times a morning. Until my husband gifted me my ember. It’s the one thing I didn’t know I needed. I love my perfect-temperature coffee while I’m doing all-the-things I’m the morning.
I drink a lot of tea. I multi task and often forget about it. The warming cup is a delight. My tea is always perfectly hot.
Overall it works well. Battery life is disappointing. I have it set for 139 degrees and it barely lasts an hour. It’s better than my standard coffee mug so I’ll deal with it.
This mug is incredible. I use it every day. It is incredibly excessive – just the thought that we live in such luxury and wealth that this thing exists is insane – but here I am, enjoying my coffee at the same temp every morning. If you take a while to drink your coffee, or get interrupted as you’re sipping, no worries if you have this mug.
My only suggestion to the manufacturer is this: bring us more products with this tech. Gravy holders, sauce bowls, etc. Imagine nacho cheese kept warm!
I have and will continue to recommend this mug, but that doesn’t mean its perfect. I do have to hold the power button everytime i want to connect my phone to set temperature and sometimes it doesn’t recognize there’s liquid in it and doesnt heat up. It does work 9 times out of 10 and it’s very good when busy in the morning. You can make your cup and come back to it an hour later and its still perfect *so long as you have it on the charging coaster*. Coaster and cup seem durable and water proof enough that you dont have to panic if you spill a little coffee down the side but I would still clean it asap. Speaking of cleaning it is very easy to do. The cup has a solid coat of paint that seems like its difficult for coffee to stick to or stain. Not perfect but it does change the way I drink coffee and I don’t want to go back to the old way.
Great idea for the cup. Keeps the coffee hot for longer then a traditional coffee cup. Battery Life needs help. I had coffee in it on a full charge and it died in 45 minutes. I think a 2 hour battery would be the best but for it to not stay hot for the advertised 80 minutes is disappointing. I keep my coffee at 134 degrees.
I’ve been wanting one for a few years and overall I love my mug. However, I have only gotten it to connect to the app one time. I almost returned it out of frustration when I first got it. I really thought it was broken, but after talking to a few friends they said it never connects for them either. I had to reset my device multiple times before it would connect. For the price I would expect better software – I could buy a mug warmer for like 20 bucks.
But I didn’t because I’m a bougie girl and targeted ads really work on me.
My hard to buy for husband says this was his best gift ever. A coffee drinker, he loves that the Ember keeps his coffee at the right temperature. Pricey but worth it.
I really enjoy my Ember mug. Got it as a gift. Avoids repeated trips to the microwave to reheat coffee. The battery does die fast. I mean really fast. 80 minutes would be on the high end. If it is off the charging plate for an hour you do get the app alerts to recharge. Not a big deal if you keep the mug charging while in use. Fits a 12 oz coffee w room for cream nicely. Keeps temp at recommended 135 degrees. Not an item I would necessarily buy for myself but I really enjoy it. Don’t put it in the dishwasher!
Easy to set up, easy to use. Down load the app, it paired easily, set your temperature and other settings and never touch it again. When you take it off the charger it wakes up but won’t turn on until you put liquid in it. Keeps hot for hours. Nice adjustable led light that meets you know if it’s on, working, standing by or if the battery is low. The best gift I got for my wife. Completely submersible to wash but can’t go in the dishwasher or microwave.
There are a few problems with the Ember stuff. If you do not dry the bottom of the mug the charge base can corrode and you have to buy a new mug. I would not put the mug in the dishwasher. Both of these things can be handled.
The bluetooth connection from the mug to you phone (for iPhone, I do not have Android to test) is flakey. Sometimes, even when the mug is within 3 feet of the phone, the App can not find the phone. When this happens I end the app, remove the mug from bluetooth, and start the App up again. It usually pairs right away and you are off. This has gotten MUCH better for me with my new mug. It used to be MUCH worse and harder, press the bottom of a full mug to start pairing again, with an older Ember mug I had.
These things are annoying. However, no other product does what this does. No wires while you are drinking your coffee. You can walk around with your mug, no problem. Keeps a constant temp. Set it in the App and the mug keeps your beverage at that temp. I had one of the mug and heated plate things and this is MUCH better. The plate always had to be plugged in and the temperature control just changed the temp of the plate, the temp of your beverage changed depending on how long the mug was off the plate. I drink coffee and tea, and I like them at different temperatures. Switching temps just takes a swipe and tap in the App.
It could be made better, but there is no other option out there that comes close.
It’s a bit expensive, but if you want your coffee at the temperature you like and you like to walk around with your coffee there is no choice.
I can be a bit immature. My favorite thing about this cup is telling my coworkers the exact degree of my coffee and how long its been that degrees. They are adequately annoyed and that makes me happy.
Very happy with this mug, normally I read reviews before purchase and for some reason in this case I read reviews after buying. I was therefore expecting a rubbish app and peeling surface after a few drinks. I like my coffee a little hotter than 62.5 C but can cope in exchange for convenience. The app has worked perfectly well(iphone13) and temperature of drinks consistent. I use a plastic spoon to stir in case it does scratch but no problems with surface so far. happy with product and price not bad at 119.
I like to drink hot coffee and read the paper. By the time I get to the last few sips of coffee it is cold. Saw this mug and decided to give it a try. I think the last sip now is hotter then the first. Great gift or for yourself if you like your coffee to stay hot.
Life changing maybe a bit too much but I couldn’t do without it now. I’ve bought another 2 for my adult daughters and they love it too
I love coffee, but hate it look warm or cold. This keeps my coffee at the perfect temperatures without needing a warm up from the pot. I also find I am not wasting coffee, and coffee like everything else, isn’t getting cheaper!
Bought this for my dad as a gift – thought he would like because it keeps liquids warm (145 degrees F). But he is super picky about the temperature of his coffee (even uses a thermometer to make sure it hot enough at 185 degrees F!) – and even this expensive mug wasn’t hot enough for him lesson learned!
It works well, and keeps my coffee warm for longer. That’s all I needed and I’m happy with this.
I saw this reviewed on America’s test kitchen and they said it was the best so I decided to take a chance. For an extreme coffee lover like myself who roasts his own beans and meticulously brews to perfection, this mug has become indispensable. I would sooner divorce my wife than not be able to have my ember mug! It’s an amazing experience to be able to have the last sip of coffee be just as hot as the very first sip even while leisurely enjoying my cup of coffee for over an hour while at the computer. This thing is built with the quality of an iPhone. The box is amazing and the product even more so. I know it’s a lot of money for a coffee mug, but believe me when you get it and start using it you’ll appreciate that it probably cost them A hell of a lot to design and manufacture this. The quality of the materials and the manufacture is absolutely fabulous. As an engineer with extensive manufacturing experience I can attest to the impeccable quality of this mug. My only suggestion to them is if they could incorporate a small digital display into the base that would read temperature and remaining battery percentage, this would be more useful than just the blinking light. Granted you can monitor these things on the iPhone app, but it would be easier if it were incorporated into the mug. I love this thing so much I just sent one yesterday to a friend who’s having a birthday.! It will change the way you drink your coffee, instead of rushing to finish a cup before it gets cold, now you can enjoy it at your own pace!
I always had a problem with ending up with cold coffee. I used insulated mugs and cups and they always were so-so. This thing has been great. Keeps the temperature at the perfect temp as long as I want. The only odd thing is if you leave just a tiny bit of coffee in the cup it will cook into a gross film. Easy to clean out, but easy to forget and pretty grossing looking when you see it floating around the next cup.
I love my Ember mug. I’m on my third one and will probably continue to buy them. BUT they have a design flaw. I’m on my third one because two base units (charging saucers) went bad on me. The third one explains why: they now come with little stickers warning you not to get them wet. Well, good luck with that. When you use this all the time as I do, it seems to me some sloshing and jostling is to be expected. Either the base unit should be very water resistant, or the saucer should be sold on its own.
Edited June 9: I see now the base is indeed available on its own. My mistake!
I didn’t want to hurry to write this review so now that 6 months have passed, this is what I’ve learned from every day use:
This mug stains. It’s black so you wouldn’t think it would get stained so easily but it’s nice sleek finish was toast by a month or 6 weeks in. I realise this is from tea sitting in it too long – but isn’t that it’s design? It gets rinsed a few times a day and then cleaned well at the end of the day but it’s clearly not enough maintenance. I’ve tried to scrub it out as much as I feel is possible without scratching it and using numerous other things to clean it (soaps, denture cleanser tabs, vinegar & baking soda, etc) Nothing really works which is sad because it looks great out of the box.
The app is pretty useless. Good thing you don’t need the app to use the mug because it needs constant pairing and makes you want to throw the whole thing out the window. If the app is something you plan to rely on, skip this. It’s pointless.
The mat has started to become sketchy about charging and I worry that I’m going to have to return this before the year warranty period. I’ve got it marked down in case it needs to go back because you have to sit it “just right” sometimes to get it to make perfect contact.
But why 4 stars? This sounds like a 1 star review, mate! Because the mug really does work. It’ll sit there and keep your coffee or tea toasty warm for a good long time. If it’s sitting there on it’s mat it’ll keep it warm until your cat knocks it over or the milk skims over. If the extras and bells and whistles are important then upgrade to something more than the 2.0 or skip this but for me, it’s saved money and improved life (less tossed out coffee, less tea down the drain, fewer tea bags, much less milk, etc)
Hi, the mug took about 30 seconds to connect to the App and so far has been totally reliable. Connection was with a IPhone 11 using the most current IOS. The mug keeps Tea/Coffee to the exact temperature and is always spot on. Due to the build quality the mug looks like a top quality item which is extremely well manufactured.
It’s really great at keeping my hot beverages hot. There is a nice range of temperatures from suggested tea and coffee temperatures to manual settings. I like to slowly sip my coffee in weekends and had the problem of having to pop my regular mugg into the microwave twice before I finished my coffee. I can now enjoy 2 consecutive cups of coffee on a single charge. Be aware that it doesn’t heat cold beverages but instead keep temperatures. It can increase the temperatures a couple of degrees but using it for that function will deplete your battery faster. The only consideration is the cost of the mug. I wouldn’t have bought it on my own. I received a generous Amazon gift card which I used to purchase it. If you have a few extra dollars to spend I highly recommend it.
First of all, this mug isn’t perfect. Mainly the not perfect part is the battery life. They say it’ll keep something warm for 80 minutes, but they don’t say at what temperature. I keep my coffee at the max, 145degrees, and while I haven’t timed it I would guess that it will last somewhere around the 50-60 minute mark.
That’s really the only negative thing I have to say. I’ve read some people’s mugs are chipping so I’ve been careful not to use metal spoons in mine, or if I do I don’t let it actually touch the mug. Most of the time I have my charger base right here with me on my desk so the battery life really isn’t that big of an issue for me. The app works very well. I haven’t had any connection issues and whenever I’ve changed the LED color or the temperature it does so immediately.
I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and I love this thing! No more having to either drink cold coffee or keep running to the microwave to reheat! This was a great gift for me and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
I bought this mug as a present for my wife as she drinks her tea so slowly.
It has been on the whole a great product but its been really let down by the fact that after a few months of use the ceramic coating at the bottom of the mug has started to come away. This is after washing the cup with mild detergent and using a soft sponge on the bottom of it.
The bottom of the cup over time has got worse and worse and I feel any scrubbing I might attempt will make it worse. I did think It was quite expensive for what it was but I am super disappointed by the poor quality of the inside of the mug where the material has come away.
I will be going through the warranty process, I thought this would be long and laborious process. But after emailing the customer service team they were excellent.
They dealt with my issue really well and immediately despatched a replacement for me without any issues whatsoever. I am very impressed by the customer service displayed and shown here, I wish all companies were as easy to deal with as this. Brandon from their team handled our complaint well and very speedily.
I will not hesitate to buy an ember again.
Received as a gift and I enjoy using it. It just bothers me that part of the advertisement is false. This is not a 14oz mug. You can get 12 oz in it only if you slurp out of it before picking it up. So if you said 12 oz that would be at least technically correct. Now way it is 14oz. From the reviews, there is a similar problem with the 8 oz cup. Why?
I received it as a gift from a person who ordered it from Amazon, it has a nice design and the tea drinking action is smooth.
Now for the science bit, as an Android user with an apparently supported device I was most frustrated by the constant nag to update and then it would fail every time. Contacting the customer support department with full information went round in circles as they dodged dealing with the problem and just requested more information that I had already provided, serial number and so on….
A small look on a popular search engine revealed many other frustrated owners all running Android in one incarnation or another and many with apparently supported devices on Embers list.
I got lucky in the end with another Android phone that was able to install the update, a Moto G 5G Plus. Since then happy with the mug and no more complaints.
Working great right out of the box! I didn’t pair it with my phone (135 is perfect). I put a lid on it which has extended the battery life way past the advertised time and seems to keep the coffee at the top of the cup hotter like it is at the bottom of the cup near the heating element. It is a standard size cup so I used a travel mug top that I already had. The first Ember mug I received would sometimes stop heating before the battery died. I could turn it back on from the app if I messed with it long enough but that was frustrating, tedious, time consuming, and often left me with a warm cup of coffee. I called Amazon and they replaced it. I haven’t tried the app with the replacement cup yet because 135 is a very good temperature; no need to change it. I also tried the mug warmers that heat your ceramic cup. The new ones are good but they can’t compare to the Ember (with a lid).
Works fantastically! Keeps drinks hot for a long time. More colours would be an advantage in same size especially the copper one. Feels like great quality too.
Good:
– Does what it says on the tin: Keeps my tea nice and hot for around 80 minutes normally, or indefinitely on the coaster.
– It’s easy to clean, and the material feels good to drink from. It’s plastic but it’s a high-quality good feeling plastic.
Bad:
– The app is dreadful – but you should only need to use it once to set your temp and then you’re fine.
– If you like your tea VERY hot, it may not be enough. I’ve set my temp to 61c and it only goes up to 64c, so it’s a little close for comfort (I think a fresh cup start around 85c for reference)
– It’s annoying to remember to charge it back up again after any use away from your coaster.
This technology is what I was looking for. A slow one cup drinker while surfing the Internet for my morning ritual. It keeps my coffee temperature at a constant, pleasing temp. I don’t use the app. I set it once and happy with it’s consistency. I purchased the larger version as it holds (300ml), my typical pour over volume. So far so good. I only have to remember to set it on the charger at night and it’s ready to go in the morning.
There are actually 2 downsides now that I think of it. First, the mug’s battery life doesn’t last 90 minutes as advertised, it’s more like 45- but I have it set to the max temp of 145 so it could just be that I’m pushing it. Also, this thing is hand wash only. Not that big a deal for me, because I don’t really wash my mug. I only use it for coffee and I’m the only one that uses it so I don’t see why you would need more than a rinse. However, I can see how this would be a downside for some. Other than that, it’s a great mug. I don’t recommend buying it from Amazon though as Costco has it for $100 and amazon is pushing $150 (at the time of writing this review).
Other than that, great mug. I can recommend it and would gift it to someone if it weren’t so expensive.
I’m so excited for this coffee mug! My working teams definitely know about my coffee obsession. So, of course, this was a must-have. Overall, I am in love! such an amazing addition to my daily routine.
A few caveats:
1. The LED is only on one side. This is disadvantageous to left-handed drinkers. I really hope in a future version of this mug that the LED is on both sides.
2. The handle sturdiness is suspect, and the sharp edges are slightly uncomfortable. I have a similar size mug that has been my go-to prior to this purchase and the handle is curved, with rounded edges, and the point of attachment is more substantial. After about a month, however, no problems, but definitely not as comfortable.
3. The volume is EXACTLY 14 oz. My previous go-to mugs held 14 oz with some syrup, half and half, and a quarter inch of space to the lip. So when I saw 14 oz., I thought Awesome, perfect! My bad, totally not the designer’s fault.
4. The battery life is more like 60 min (in my experience). However, my daily use is at my home office desk, so I just keep it on the charging coaster and no issues. I also purchased as second charging coaster for the living room for weekends.
5. I would love it if the mug was smart enough to know when it’s 1/4 full and back off a few degrees. The last few sips seem warmer than the initial mug.
6. I love the copper finish, but wasn’t available in the 14 oz model.
All of this aside, SO HAPPY with my purchase! I hope the designers take my feedback into consideration ( and yes, I’m available for follow-up, wink wink*)
UPDATE Now extremely pleased, everything’s working faultlessly and really enjoying coffee at my new favourite of 58.5 C!
Original review: Initially very disappointed. Coffee 3hrs to charge and went cold after 50 minutes when I still had about 1/5 of a mug to drink.
I found two work arounds which mainly solved issues.
1. Preheat ember with hot water and also ensure coffee is 2 to 3 C above desired temperature.
This allowed the coffee to stay hot untill the last drop 86 minutes later with 6% charge remaining
2. The Bluetooth is infuriatingly terrible and I hope that can be improved during updates. Luckily the work -around suggested by another user works.
You need to delete Ember from your phones Bluetooth then add it via phone, not the app. Finally ensure Bluetooth is still enabled on the mug then open the app. Works fully then
I would have given Just 4 stars due to the inconvenience BUT I so thoroughly enjoy hot coffee and not having to go put it in the microwave every 10 minutes
So if: You accept the very high price, can live with a longer Bluetooth install each time and love hot coffee then reluctantly highly recommended.
Footnotes for developer: Sorting Bluetooth is a priority especially if this can be improved by an upgrade. Ember 3 needs to have a charge time of about 1 hour and designed to keep coffee hot for at least 90 minutes, 100 would be grea
The good news is the technology built into the actual mug is solid and works very well so far. The app, on the other hand, is one of the worst apps I’ve ever used (android). This is the reason I dropped a star. Luckily, you can use the mug without the app and it’s fine. Since I’m primarily a coffee drinker, my usage doesn’t vary much either. So far, I’ve actually seen good mileage out of the battery. Most of my usage takes place in my home office, where I use the charging coaster anyway. Again, everything physical (mug + coaster) is solid. No complaints there yet. I saw some reviews about the finish coming off. We’ll see if that occurs on mine, and I’ll update my review if it does. I do plan on strictly hand washing this thing, so I won’t be using any sponges or anything of the sort. I’m hoping I can avoid the finish wear, but we’ll see. To summarize, the mug is great. The app needs serious development.
As others have mentioned, there are problems getting the mug to stay connected to the app. This affects all features of the app, from setting temperatures to changing colours and performing updates. I found a workaround on Reddit that works for me that involves pairing the mug first through your phone settings, then through the app:
1. Hold down the power button on the mug for about 14s until it flashes red, then release.
2. In the app, go to your list of devices and long press your mug to delete it.
3. Open the Bluetooth settings in your phone, forget the mug.
4. Once the mug LED flashes white, hold the button down for about 4s until it flashes blue
5. In the Bluetooth settings app in your phone, find the mug in the list of available devices and pair it
6. Open the app, it will tell you you have no devices paired, follow the instructions to pair the mug, including holding down the button for 4s again and pairing the mug through the app.
Once I had done these steps (the key part is pairing it first through the phone) I was able to perform an update and the mug reliably connected to the app each time.
Once this was done I have been happy with the mug.
I always have a tea on the go and this is awesome. It connects without a problem to the app on my iPhone. I have the temperature set to 55c and my tea is mostly always good.
I say “mostly” because if I leave it too long, a skin forms on the top of the tea. This normally takes an hour or so to happen, so is probably not an issue for normal use. I get lost in my work and can forget about my hot cup of tea.
I also like to drink herbal teas. I use a tea infuser with ginger and lemon. I’m able to pop the infuser in my cup and leet it steep for 15-20 mins before drinking and it’s a perfect temperature.
I can’t speak highly enough about this mug, I absolutely love it.
There is one negative and that is the tea stains, but I suppose that’s probably due to not washing my cup between cups of tea through the day. So, I suppose this is the o be expected?
The stains do come out with a bit of elbow grease and some dish soap, so not a deal breaker by any means.
The mug itself is amazing. Keeps coffee at your perfect temp until the last drop. It will go for about an hour plus by itself, or indefinitely on the charging coaster. It will actually charge up while keeping your cup warm on the coaster. Neither the coaster, the bottom, nor sides of the mug get hot. Nice.
Pairing the mug with the app and getting the firmware to update was an adventure on Android, due to incorrect pairing instructions. If you pair the mug with your phone first, then pair with the app, the Bleutooth connection works properly. If you skip phone pairing, the Bluetooth connection will not work properly for firmware updates. On Android, the app puts empty notifications in the notification bar, even if notifications are disabled. Oops. You only really need the app to change the temp setting of your mug and personalize the LED color, so once that is done, you could just close the app or disable notifications in Android. The mug tells you all you need to know through its color coded LED. The app has lots of features, but you may not, need them to enjoy the basic functionality.
Supposedly, the ceramic coating is susceptible to damage. I’m using a plastic spoon to stir, and hand wash carefully. We’ll see how durable it is but I suspect most slow coffee drinkers will love this mug. I keep the charging coaster on the side table where I normally have morning coffee. I’m thinking about getting a second coaster for the kitchen.
Held back my review until tried and tested.
Used it for a couple of weeks at default 135f, with no problems.
My preferred temp, is 140f, hooked the mug up to the app. Up until now, it has worked perfectly.
I now make my morning coffee, take the dogs out, before going to work, coffee remains at the same temp after walk.
All I can say is, I’m over the moon.
Review Updated – May 2022: After a ~year of (daily) use I noticed the ceramic on the bottom of one of the mugs starting to flake away. I contacted Ember support to see if anything could be done. They asked for a photo of the problem and the serial number. As soon as I emailed the photos I received a shipping notification, and a follow up mail letting me know that a replacement mug was on the way! Thanks to the amazing customer support (Thanks Michele!), and being a company that stands behind their product, I have updated my review from 4 to 5 stars. Ember has really nailed customer satisfaction – it’s really refreshing to see how well they do it.
Overall I really have been enjoying the Ember 2 Mug.
It works well, seems durable and keeps my coffee at the perfect temperature.
The only negative I see is the battery life. At the temperature setting I use, I don’t get the full 80 mins out of the mug. I’d say it is probably closer to an hour (and this is consistent for both mugs I own).
Most days the 1 hour life is plenty, but sometimes I’m a little slower drinking, so I was going to buy an extra charging coaster to keep on my desk. But after seeing the price of the coaster ($40) and the delay in getting one (it was 3-4 weeks when I looked), I just decided to buy a whole new mug. Now I keep one set in my office, and one in the kitchen, and I’m able to keep my coffee at the perfect temperate for hours. However, in my experience after about 90-120 mins of heating, it starts to taste more “burned” and eventually (after 2+ hours) turns into gross, burned “stale office coffee” that tastes like it has been sitting in a pot for the whole day. Again, I have my heat set high, so I am sure at a lower temperature you’d get better coffee after a few hours.
PRO TIP: I was considering buying the travel version of this mug, but didn’t like the smaller capacity, nor did I really think I needed to spend money on a 3rd Ember. As it turns out, the Yeti Magnetic Lids fit the Ember 2 mug perfectly, and turn it into a great travel mug. I used the lid from a 20oz tumbler, but I’m sure other ones will fit too.
Working from home I have found this mug invaluable. No more heating my coo fee in the microwave 2, 3 times (yuk) you can set the temperature at the right drinking temp for you. And it will then keep at that temp all
Day if on coaster or about 11/2hrs without.
—-Original Review—-
I have to first say that I love this mug. The look is sleek, the technology is cool, and it works quite well! I was the envy of my office mates. I really enjoyed using this mug…. while it lasted.
The biggest problem is that I cannot use it anymore because the black coating is peeling off inside the cup.
I have always been very careful when I clean this mug, because I figured the mug was coated with something. So I used a soft sponge to clean out the coffee residue. Much to my dismay, the finish still flaked off after about 1.5 years of use. I’m pretty sure I’ve ingested it.
I’m very sad that after a very short life, and after the warranty period is gone (1 year), that my mug is totally worthless. I expected more out of a mug that cost me $137 bucks.
—-Updated 7/23/2021—-
I contacted Ember support directly, and told them about the problem, and other than giving them a picture of the cup, including the serial number, they didn’t ask any other questions and sent me a new mug, even though my warranty was clearly expired. Three days later I’m drinking from my new Ember mug! That’s pretty great customer service. Updated review from 1 star to 4 stars. We’ll see if this new mug suffers the same finish issue. Fingers crossed!
I’d give the product a 4.5 out of five stars thus far. Had since April 2021 so I’m new with it. It does keep my coffee hot enough even at 145 (max) or a bit below. I do wish it were a bit wider and held a few more OZ of liquid. Not a big deal but my older mugs were larger. Occasionally the product “thinks” the mug is empty when it isn’t, so it doesn’t heat. A ‘hard reboot’ fixed this but I’m not sure it will revert. I have no issues washing by hand, I always washed my mugs this way in the past so I couldn’t care less that it can’t go in a dishwasher. Plus I use it every day so quick wash, dry and ready to go. No issue with the battery as I drink my coffee and read the paper in the morning next to the charging coaster. If it heats for half an hour without the coaster, fine with me. No chipping issues. It IS great to not to worry about the coffee cooling down, no need to futz with the microwave to heat it as desired. Overall, very happy but yeah, this product isn’t inexpensive. But compared to a standard mug and mug warmer (and I’ve tried many), this product does keep my coffee as hot as I desire throughout the cup. I’d pay a bit more for a slightly larger mug if the company ever goes that route.
Update: February, almost a year after purchase. I am seeing the ceramic coating coming off the bottom of the mug. I’ve sent a request to Ember and hope they replace the unit. I only, carefully wash with soap and water so I just think, as others here have commented on, the material (mine is black) isn’t built to last. I’m still going to give the product 4 stars IF as expected, they replace the unit but this is concerning to say the least.
The firmware update is finicky and I still haven’t managed to get it to update.
Keeping the cup connected to my phone is a nightmare too. But once you have a good temperature set, the app isn’t needed.
Not very useful if you switch up drinks though.
Overall, the build quality and feel of the cup is very nice. Very well built and insulated.
It is a little pricey, but it does it’s job and I’m pretty happy with my purchase.
So much better and safer than those heated mats you get.
This is actually the second Ember mug I’ve gotten. I got the first one a couple of years ago, and recently I noticed that even though I never (not once) used a metal spoon on it, the surface at the bottom was scuffed up enough that I was nervous about ingesting small pieces of it. So I threw that one away. But this time I got the new version that claims to have an improved surface, and so far so good. That said, I love the fact that I can set the temperature to the “perfect” coffee temperature (in my case 138 degrees) and it stays that way! If I’m using it at my desk on the charger, I can have it at that temperature all day if I want and just take sips as I choose. I hate having to chug the rest of the coffee because it’s getting lukewarm. If I’m not at my desk, I know I have comfortably over an hour to drink it before it starts cooling. I would have given the first one five stars, and this one is bigger and has a longer battery life (and hopefully a more resilient surface). I gave two of these to good friends of mine for Christmas and they love them too. (I’m only giving four stars for “giftable” because of the price.) At work I have a cup warmer, which is OK, but I strongly prefer this mug because I can choose the perfect temperature. But more importantly, my office at work is a confined space, while at home I can take my Ember mug with me anywhere in the house and it’ll keep the temperature where I want it. As an aside, within a few days of getting it I accidentally dropped it, and it didn’t break. A regular mug would have shattered. Don’t try this at home, but it’s somewhat reassuring.
I don’t give 5 stars very often but this did get them and I’ve bought several of these as Christmas and birthday presents … they are really awesome.
I make coffee and often get side tracked and come back 30 mins or an hour later to Luke warm coffee. Not with this. If you leave it on the stand it stays roasting all day. If you walk around like I do then it stays super hot for about an hour. It really is very good.
Only Drawback? Not dishwasher safe !
Expensive product but works perfectly, as advertised. The battery life is about 2 cups for me but appears to charge quickly.
I got white as the black version was not available at the time. Stains quite easily so takes a little more to wash than simply rinse and repeat.
Great product. Keeps the temperature exactly the way I like my coffee and tea. Also like the app that it comes with. The only problem is the price, it’s over $$225 Canadian dollars and doesn’t come with free Return shipping. So be mindful when buying since you have to pay for the return shipping cost.
I think heat plates will work just as well when at home or in the office. If you really want it, consider buying the the travel version for car or outside use where you don’t have access to a plug. But if you want one for home use, I say it’s overpriced.
Update:
16 months later I still use the ember mug every day and like it. But something is loose in the charger base. I have to turn it upside down and place the inverted mug underneath it. I guess a wire is loose or something of that sort so electricity only flows with the whole set-up inverted. So I can’t place the mug on the charger to keep my brew hot for a long time. Since I finish off any given dose of Java fairly fast, this is not a problem. I can do at least 2 cups before I have to recharge. I hope the charger doesn’t die completely.
Crazy expensive, but Ember uses induction heating to break the 125 barrier. The “hot” plate never gets hot. All the heat goes into the coffee. It holds a healthy 9 oz.
Hand wash. Do NOT microwave.
I never seriously thought I’d own a Bluetooth coffee mug and be happy I did.
The usual run of nearly identical coffee warmers are just miniature hot plates that, for safety reasons, do not dare go over a certain temperature; around 185. That temperature, transferred to your mug or cup, just can’t keep your coffee more than about 125 tops in a room with normal temperature. That just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t want warm coffee, I want a HOT coffee.
In the past — and by the past I mean about a week ago- I would get up literally every three minutes and warm up my cooling coffee in the microwave for 15 seconds. That worked, but it was tedious.
With the Ember mug, You download the app, easily pair your mug to the app after pressing the bottom button and set your desired maintenance temperature. In my case that temperature is 145. I would go to 155 if it would let me but 145 is the max and will do. If you’ve poured a cup that is hotter than 145 the temperature will gradually lower, accurately displayed on your phone or tablet screen if you care to look, and when your target temperature is reached you get a little notification and the temperature stays there very reliably. This is so great. No more getting up from the table and doing The microwave thing.
You don’t even have to keep it plugged in once it is charged. The ember mug is good for at least a couple of cups of coffee before the battery inside the mug runs out. If you keep it on the little induction plate then there is no limit to the number of times you can refill. You don’t have to drag around a little induction plate with its cord and transformer if you need to switch rooms.
Due to its induction style heating, the bottom of the mug does not get hot. The mug knows when liquid has been poured into it and turns on by itself. A neat thing: if you have half an inch of liquid in the mug it somehow knows that the liquid still needs heat. But as soon as the mug is empty, the mug knows the score and turns off.
As long as this thing keeps working reliably, as I pray that it will, I will regret the high price less and less as the months go by.
So buy buy buy Ember Mug!
This was a work-from-home impulse purchase that I made as a result of COVID-19. Now that I have to pay for my own coffee (k-cups), I care much more about being less wasteful and drinking every drop (yes — I’m one of those people who are completely useless without a constant stream of coffee). I tend to nurse my coffee, and I would only get through half of a cup before it was too cold to be enjoyable.
I bought this Ember mug to combat my wasting coffee problem and I absolutely love it. I love that I can set my coffee to exactly the temperature that I want and that I receive a notification when the coffee “cools down” to that temperature after being made. It stays consistently hot with every sip, although the last sip or two is sometimes a bit hotter than expected.
I agree with others that the battery life could be better. However, I pretty much leave it on the coaster (charging device) all day, so it really isn’t an issue for me. I didn’t get this so I could walk around with my coffee, but rather just so it would stay hot while I’m at my desk. However, this is still the reason I dropped a star.
My only feature suggestion is to reposition the charging light on the coffee mug itself. It changes color to indicate whether it is charging (i.e., properly resting on the base), fully charged, almost depleted, etc. However, it is not positioned well for left handed people. I would recommend either putting a light on both sides, or else moving the indicator light to a more universal location, such as the handle. This didn’t impact my rating.
Overall, highly recommended if you want to keep your coffee hot and don’t really care about the battery life.
This mug is great because I never really have to worry about forgetting about my tea, and then coming back to a stone-cold cup 4 hours later. I even accidentally let the cup completely drain the battery, popped it on the charger with my cold tea, and it even reheated the tea to the temperature that I set. The battery is really only good for about an hour but it will work quite happily on the charging base and keep your drink warm. I’ve not been game enough to drink tea or coffee with milk in it, but if you’re looking for a beverage to retain a nice drinking temperature, this cup rocks!
