This is a great product, if more than a little fiddley to put together. Some of the plastic joints are narrow which is great for sturdiness in use, but it took a hair dryer to soften the plastic enough to get it together.
Assembly time was said to be 25 mins. Not in our experience more of a puzzle for the Generation Game taking closer to two hours the second one was done in just over the hour so it does get easier but…….? Once assembled do appear to be up to the job but it is early days ye
Given as a gift to my daughter, who is very pleased with it. I bought her two unfortunately one had the wrong fittings pack sent. I contacted Outsunny and they could have not been more helpful! Happy customer.
I really like this product and felt that I researched it well before purchase. IT was replacing a hardwood cold frame that was falling apart. It is a little light so needs to be located in a sheltered position. Im not convinced the plastic clips that hold the panels open will not become lose over time and when the wind gets under them they may come off. The reviews were complaining about the assembly difficulty. My advice is get organised and assemble it inside. Think of it as a Lego model or airfix model, once you get into it, its not that difficult. I have set mine up to have two compartments and not 3, which was one of the questions raised. I therefore have spare panels etc. It would have been too big otherwise. Can recommend and looks like it will be reasonably hard wearing.
Not the easiest too put together but worth the effo
Assembly is straight forward until attaching the top part of the frame. My advice is to attach the roof hinges first and then fix the roof on afterwards. Trying to fix the top on with the roof attached is a pain.
Trying to fix the top part of the frame on is tricky regardless. Once everything is assembled you have a fairly stable cold frame. Probably best suited for a wind sheltered part of the garden and even then best to make sure you weight it down. If you don’t want to pay a fortune for a cold frame then this is your product. If you need something more heavy duty look elsewhere.
A very nice and well constructed item. I have my doubts about those screws as they do not look to me like aluminium, but they are needed to keep the frame parts lined up while assembling.
I did not follow the assembly instructions for the lids and top of the frame. Big mistake, as I now have to start the lids and top again following the instructions.
If I had followed them, it would have been as easy as the base. By “as easy” I mean needing to click into place after (and only after) positioning aluminium strip inside plastic edges (ask me how I know ).
I’ve mangled the plastic connectors forcing them over the edge strips, so had extra difficulty putting them on properly at the second attempt. I also did not put the screws in and so made myself more difficulty for a while… you know, just follow those instructions, they even tell you the correct sequence for putting the plastic things over the aluminium things.
My mom likes this very much. Long may it last.
Read some of the low ratings about it being impossible to assemble, its not easy peazy but it’s not hard either, its nice quality and took 2 of us about an hour and 15 minutes to assemble but I may have done it quicker by myself, it was delivered straight from the seller within 2 days, and we are so impressed with it we ordered a second one…I would highly recommend this cold frame, its maintenance free and cheaper than making one yourself from wood…well worth it.
This product is extremely good value for money. It is very lightweight but a great size, being taller than most other cold frames. Mine is in a very secluded corner of the garden so it unlikely to move in a wind. The parts are all clearly labelled and is is very easy to see how it lays out ready to be put together. However the instructions needs to be much clearer as to how the actual parts fit into the plastic corners as it took me several goes to find out how to actually build this. It is only once the top is fitted that it becomes rigid so be very careful. The top was the most difficult to fit. The whole thing took around 4 hours to finish. I would buy this again though if I needed a second frame. If this had better instructions I would give it 5 stars throughout!!
The first one of these I brought was fiddly to assemble, however, second time round it was MUCH easier. One thing I found that helped was assembling it inside where you haven’t got to worry about the wind blowing it or moving pieces about when you are assembling it. The first one I built I needed another person to help me assemble it, but second time round I found it much easier and was able to assemble it on my own.
It works really well, is not too flimsy and is definitely a good value for money. It is a good size especially when compared to others which are smaller and more expensive. I will be recommending it.
Arrived on time and all the parts were there. Instructions poor as it mentioned a hinged door (non existent) and suggested you may need a stepladder which I doubt as it’s only 18″ or so high. Claims to take 25 minutes to assemble but took me many hours especially as it didn’t make clear how the aluminium strutts snap in not just push fit. All labelled even down to inside and outside surfaces. Polycarbonate very thin but works. The diagrams take a lot of getting used to and must be done in the same order.. Eventually I cracked it and nothing left over at the end (a good sign!). Pleased with the end result.
The product is a bit over priced for what it is, its takes ages to assemble because the channels grey plastic fittings are so tight, the ends of the aluminium extrusions, that have been machine cut, are razor sharp and do not easily squeeze into the fittings. Take care when doing so or you could end up with a really bad cut from the corners of the aluminium framework. I did manage to assemble all of the panels and all but one of the top fittings, one of the two in the middle of the back. I note that other reviewers have had the same problem. If you are patient, careful and have 4 to 6 arms, you should get it done in about 3 hours. Once fully assembled is is quite good, but the two centre hinge brackets on the frame, are quite thin and these will obviously not take too much strain.
This is just what my hubby required for his seedlings. He is happy with it.
It says allow a minimum of 25 mins to assemble. Don’t be fooled by this, I am very comfortable with DIY and it took me over 3 hours!!!
I like the finished product, but it took 1hr to assemble the parts and over 2hrs to get the top to fit onto the bottom section due to the T pieces with hinges being far to tight to slide down onto the bottom section , I had to force the plastic apart to enable them to fit , this product definitely needs 2 people to put it together , as someone who has worked in the building trade I found it a tricky assembly for one person . But now that it’s assembled I am more than happy with the product, just sort those T-pieces .
I liked the price of this product and not easy to follow instructions was a small price to pay.
This is a great cold frame, pretty easy to assemble, if you follow the instruction, which you really have to do. Dead easy as every single piece has a sticker, so it is very clear what belongs where and one just clicks it all.. I used a rubber hammer for some of the pieces and that worked really well. Once it was assembled (it does take 2 hours by the way), I secured it with pegs to the grounds and my plants are really happy and it all survived two big storms already. For that price one really cant complain!
Once assembled correctly it is good product and pretty sturdy. However, getting there requires patience and a good look at the relatively poor instructions. 5 star because of the price.
Parts clearly marked and instructions ok but still took me 3 hours to construct. Well designed and final product very stable.
The instructions can be a little confusing at first, I do recommend laying all the pieces out in order to begin with (diagram in the back of the instructions). Unfortunately, at the end of the assembl,y the top three windows would not connect completely with the back joints – the two middle joints would not accept the roof despite numerous attempts at trying to connect. Luckily the corners are in secure, so the windows are still functional. The item is probably a little overpriced for the build quality overall.
Arrived promptly and easy to put together. It is perfect for my needs. Not the sturdiest cold frame but I’m very pleased for the price.
Good size, easy to build but took a while. Very sturdy too
Put together in a few hours and perfect for what we were looking for.
Unless you are really good at flatpacks or really enjoy being frustrated this is not for you.
If you carefully follow the perfectly adequate instructions then you will not go wrong. If you don’t then you will get in a mess. The instructions show how all the pieces slot and screw together and each piece is numbered. I have never put one of these things together before but by myself, studiously following the instructions I assembled it by myself in three hours without any snags.
The assembly is broken up into steps, I started with the base first by putting the well numbered parts on the floor in the right place and then simply slotting them together. I then added the upright struts, inserted the side windows, making the top windows and then constructing the top of the frame & adding the top windows, which was the trickiest part but still not difficult.
All the parts were machined perfectly, the aluminium seems strong enough and when assembled correctly is quite sturdy. As it is quite light there are cross struts along the base in two places which you can place bricks on as well as in the corners to stop it being affected by the wind.
The only thing I would change is the windows have paper stickers attached which don’t peel off, instead I had to pick them off with my fingers and then use white spirit to get rid of the glue left behind. Plastic stickers would make things much easier. Apart from that I am very happy with it.
Bottom line is don’t rush into building it, study the instructions and the labelled pieces and then put it together as though you are a kid making a Meccano set.
Good value, and when made good. Allow lots more time than the instructions specify, Straight forward but needs to be a very flat surface.
