The actual unit is good. We had it installed by our builder whilst constructing a new conservatory. We’ve experienced torrential rain and high winds since it was installed and it appears to be totally weatherproof. The negative to this item is that, whilst it is described as suitable for walls, it does not meet with a cavity wall. There is a gap between the two parts and no tunnel is available for this size. We had to construct a suitable tunnel from some left over flooring. Considering the high price of this item it should be designed and constructed for the UK cavity wall. Also, despite it being medium size suitable for up to 40lb, it is only just big enough for our cat and chihuahuas to use. I would not consider installing it for a dog larger than this.
Medium Door. This is a replacement after 7 years of our mini-schnauzer Smitty, super manning through the door. Very happy with the update on clean white color, we had old beige before. The doors are much more quiet and a clear frost tone color rather than old brown. Our 15 year old son installed this no problem. Also, props to the seller for replacing our original damaged shipment so quickly, the old door was broken. The delivery company must’ve played hot potato with it as they busted a corner. Overall, perfect for an 19lb dog and nice look
I own a Handyman business and have installed hundreds of pet doors. This dual flap from Pet Safe is always my go to for all applications. Whenever a client asks for recommendations for a pet door this is the one I recommend. Its a good quality product and it is easy to install. I specifically like the telescoping tunnel, this makes installation through the wall much easier than trying to assemble and install a separate tunnel that other manufactures use. Here is an installation tip, don’t use the butterfly wall anchors. Instead use a couple of 2×4, or 2×6 (depending on the wall construction)tucked into the wall prior to installing the pet door. This will give you a something solid to use the enclosed wood screws. A much stronger and secure way to fasten the pet door in place.
Looks good and works. Would not call it high end quality but does the trick.
NEED TIME TO INSTALL AND CARE, FREEZE IN WINTER -20 AND UNDER
Quedo excelente en la pared, mis perritos usan la puerta todo el tiempo, al principio les daba un poco de miedo
Wow so impressed the fellas installed in in under 2 hours looked really easy to install no problems seems to be weather proof although I do live in NM where have have very little weather mostly sunshine but when it rains it poors and so far so good. Very well made and has been a life saver we’re newly dog parents well 3 years now and having a doggie door is essential especially after adding a second addition to our pet family so yeah a must buy! I actually bought 2 dog doors one for the wall and one for the garage door and we love them so much not to mention how Bunky and Buddy just love having their independence the can come an go as they please as long as they stay in the yard lol
This pet door is extremely sturdy and I look forward to installing it.
Einfach toll, die Tr ist ihr Geld wert. Unser Westi Welpe drei Monate alt konnte es innerhalb zwei Woche!
Meant to buy a door entry
Returned this one and got a different style
Die Hunde mussten sich erst dran gewhnen, aber jetzt klappt es super. Die Tre kann jetzt endlich dank der Klappe zu bleiben das
I am replacing one that I put in 12 years ago, works very well.
Took a little while for our dog to work out the two more flexible rubber flaps from the single plastic one she was used to ..but shes got it now and for us its quieter and looks a lot more sophisticated. Would definitely recommend
Brilliant product to be used with the external dog flat kit. Will need someone reliable to make hole in the wall but any useful diy-er should manage. This product is just the tunnel and end door but it is needed to keep out cold from wall cavity and to prevent any creature that had got into your wall cavity from entering house. Product joins the the external dog flap easily. The 2 door flaps are strong and make it weather proof and there is a removable sliding internal door to lock it with.. Together they are a winning combination. Highly recrecommend.
This dog flat is excellent they got too used to it in one day I’ve only had a tiny bit of wet inside but overall waterproof best buy for my dogs
We placed our doggy door in the wall beside our door. Our cat and dog both learned to use it.
We loved to the 8- 3/4 x 14 1/4 drop-in closure panel that came with it, but we hate that only one is included. It’s $26 to get another panel. Our little dog gets anxious because she thinks shes locked in or out because she got on the wrong side of the door and did not see that the drop down panel on the other side. She ran into it, one time and has NEVER forgotten. She tests the door multiple times each time she uses it because of the single incident. We recommend getting a 2nd drop-in closure panel before you ever install this if you have an anxious dog, or ever plan to shut the door do pets (or racoons) can’t get in and out.
LOVE this! My cats have their own room for litter box, toys, perches etc. This keeps my sweet kitties contained with all of their stuff-including litter dust and tracking, in their own space. Then they can come into my bedroom when they want to cuddle during the night. I keep all the doors open during the day inside my house, but at night I don’t like them going throughout my home getting into things. This was the perfect solution to keep them comfortable and exactly where I want them to be at night. They can go between my room and their room. I’m lucky my master is right next to theirs for a seamless transition. Looks great, tucked in the corner and took a handyman less than 30 minutes to install. Will be easy to patch and close if I ever need to.
Seems strong. Door flap can be changed next time instead of whole door.
I had this installed on my outbuilding for 2 medium/large dogs. It comes with one door lock which is good enough really. Great in cold weather too. I had my builder cement it in.
1 dog got it straight away. The other was far too scared at first but we trained her.
For training, I recommend removing one of the 2 flaps at first or even both and reward with a high value treat when or if they come through. You might need to start with rewarding them near the flap, head through the flap, head and paw through the flap, etc. Be patient, do not physically force. If it helps, start by lifting the flap for them at first. We also had a rule, the dog was not allowed to use the main door ever again, this meant we were constantly training and it paid off.
This flap has changed our lives! Dogs are able to find indoor space and go outdoor to wee themselves. This equipped with a 2 way audio cam is amazing when you have to go outdoors without the pups.
I wish it was more winter weather built. Let’s frost in the corners. We use it in our heated well house for the cats. It’s been good so far.
Love the product. I have 6 yorkies so this is just awesome. I only wish I could have a second door to close it for the winter time
I like pretty much everything about this “doggy” door. I think more cold drafts come in through our human door vs this doggy door.
One down side is that my psychotic bird and squirrel killing cat also uses this “doggy” door. Hence the quotes. Now you may be thinking to yourself, why would you ever have let your cat outside to begin with?? Well, the answer is…he was a stray that is as cute and damn cuddly as all get out! So I forced him to be my cat. Because I love him. And he loves me. I think… Now he brings in dead birds through the “doggy” door.
Oh! My old, fat husky fits her lard ass through this large size “doggy” door pretty well too. She’s about 55-60 lbs, but any larger than that….go xxl on the door size. The only thing worse than a dead bird in the kitchen is a fat sausage dog stuck in a “doggy” door.
We used this for our cats. Looks great and works really well
Was what I expected only it turns out it was too small for my dog, so had to return it.
I have a log house so this was a bit harder to install as I had to install thru a wall that was quite thick. Took a bit more time but it works very well, glad I bought it.
Just installed this summer, never tried in winter. My husky and cat both use the door to come in and go out.
Buensima y sper segura para el perro y para seguridad de la casa
The product looked great but I didn’t notice that it would only fit in a 7.5 inch thick wall. Our walls are brick so were more than 7.5 inches thick.
Used the medium dog door for our two beagles! You might think your dog is a certain size without measuring; but I would definitely suggest measuring like the company suggests as it may be a tighter fit than you realize. Our dogs fit great with the medium door; but one of our beagles has a heftier build, so this door will keep us motivated to keep him trim or he won’t fit through it!
The door itself is wonderful. It took about an hour and a half or two hours to install (getting through siding/finding wiring in walls, etc. made it a little longer); but overall happy with the installation of it. We are very surprised at how soundproof it is. We had to lift the flaps to talk back and forth to each other when installing, which gives me a good indication of the weatherproof/insulation it has. Very glad we went with this product!
I have used their other doors in the past and have found them to be of good quality and easy to install. I would have given this a 5 star but I am going through a 6″ wall with cladding and found the telescoping section did not go far enough leaving the centre section exposed. For the average wall this would not be a concern.
We installed the pet door without any issues while following the provided instructions. We did however find that because it was going through the wall we needed to reinforce the bottom of the pass through because it was quite flimsy and it definitely would have cracked over time or with our weather fluctuations. Trained the dog on how to use it and now she lets herself in and out all the time.
Excellent dog door, with nice easy installation instructions… but when installing into a UK brick cavity external wall there is a2 to 4 inch gap between the front and back parts. So you have to fill with something – either cement or expanding foam, then you need to use something to cover that up to give a single, clean continuous internal surface. Sounds more difficult than it is, but just be aware that it is slightly more work than you expect. Never-the-less would recommend.
I really like the double flap doors to keep wind and cold weather out. I now have 2 of these small dog doors. In Alberta and Arizona and they are awesome.
Had this installed by a builder during renovations. Very good quality.
like the 2 flaps which help keep the cold outside. i have 2 100 lb dogs who now have a huge dog house.
Fitted well and is a solid piece of kit. Dog is in and out all day now.
Easy installation. Good size. We have a 110 lbs dog who gets in and out easily. Seems very durable and has with stood a Manitoba winter. It enters to my garage and it seems to block the north wind pretty good but don’t think I would truste it for entertaining to the house.
I really like this door, however there’s some things you need to consider. First, you need to know how to reinforce the wall. What I mean is I actually built a 2×4 frame around the outside of the mold. Also, the stencil isn’t a perfect fit. It doesn’t account for the screw holes in the corners. I didn’t use the toggle bolts. I used 1 1/4 in screws with a washer that fastened into the 2×4 frame I made inside the wall. I also used a heavy duty caulking around the outside of the mold. I seen reviews that the inside of the mold is bowed in and the flap can’t close. That’s because the hole is too tight. This door CANT be a snug fit. It has to be large enough for the two doors to slide together in with no effort. Try to find a place next to a stud and frame it out front there. Trying to fastened this to sheet rock is going to cause a head ache. My door is so strong it’s going to last a long time.
We got this to put on our dog kennel door to keep the wind and snow out. It was easy to install and the double flaps do help to keep wind and snow out most of the time. However we live in Ontario, Canada and When temperatures drop the flaps seem to shrink and the magnets at the bottom don’t connect and keep them shut. Good for a doghouse or kennel but I wouldn’t use his on my house unless I lived in somewhere with mild winters.
Excellent product…puppy still in training but now doing well. Have removed inner flap to assist with training. Good sturdy product.
Keeps the West coast winds at bay and our furry kids have freedom. Love it.
Don’t know why I waited so long to get one of these. Haven’t had to clean up a mess since we took the flaps off. Found that the flaps were a little stiff so we took them off for the cats and little dog to get the hang of it. Sure beats keeping the kitchen window open year round!
Love this in-wall pet door! With 5 cats and 2 small dogs, there was one of our fur babies constantly sitting at the door waiting to be let in or let out. Not any more. Our pet door leads into a porch and grass area that is totally enclosed so they are allowed access to enjoy the “outdoors”. I am a 60 year old woman with some handy skills and installed totally in 2 hours.
After install I taped up both outside flaps and inside flaps to the walls with heavy duty masking tape so no barriers for them to get through yet, and within 5 minutes the oldest of our cats (12 years) was using it, within 10 minutes they all were (cats 1 year old to 12 years old) and one of the dogs (the other dog is disabled so I knew she wouldn’t use it) going in and out….. will put one of the flaps down at a time to get them used to it later….the install instructions are very clear, with templates. I did not follow the instructions for measuring the pet at the shoulder etc because of all our pet difference in sizes, I just averaged the sizes and put it closer to the floor than they recommended. The only issue I had was that the vinyl siding prevented the tunnels from overlapping (in a 2 by 8 wall) so the tunnels just touched where they joined, to get around this I used contrasting duct tape on the seam and it looks great. I also made sure that because we live in Canada that i put good insulation back in the wall cavity around the pet door and siliconed the outside frame of the pet door where it meets the siding. Really, really happy “Mom” is not always letting a pet baby in or out….. ps, love the hard door we put in the frame every night so they can’t get out after hours.. hope this helps someone else.
I’m a 30 year old female DIY newbie who didn’t have much trouble installing this myself. The directions are easy to follow and there is a great installation video on their website. Using a jig saw was the toughest part. I also didnt like the screw assembly that came with the set. Its crap. Instead, I built a frame in the wall, which i believe will prevent the bottom from falling out as some reviews have mentioned, and screwed the door directly into the frame. I also took one reviewers tip and glued a piece of carpet in the bottom of the door for traction and debris removal help. For the price, its a great, functional door. Make sure you caulk around the edges when you are done. It isn’t mentioned in the directions but you will need to do that for weather proofing. Mine had gaps on the outside part due to having wooden siding. Caulk was vital.
I had this door built into my newly built home by the builders (see pics). I moved into my new home in the summer of 2018. I live in central Alberta, Canada.
My third picture shows the inside in temperatures from -5C to +37C. The fourth and fifth pictures show the door in temperatures down to -25C from the inside. And the sixth photo shows the outside at -25C. (I’m not sure what the wind-chill temperatures were.)
My 18-pound dog uses it freely. It makes things so easy for him and me. As the temperature gets cooler, when he goes out, the inside flap gets stuck on the side insulation of the outer flap, leaving it open a bit. This is probably my most disliked thing about this door. So, occasionally, I’ll check the interior door flap and make sure it is shut and the magnetic bottom is sealed.
The sides of the flaps, when closed, are insulated well. As for feeling any cold or draft through it, I have felt almost nothing, even in cold temperatures. That part has surprised me the most. When it’s really windy, I put the hard door on to prevent the flaps from moving a bit. Also, when it’s very cold, like below -15C, my dog has to push on the exterior flap harder because the magnetic bottom freezes shut.
Overall, I love this door and I’m so glad I had it installed.
Bought this because it seemed to be the right size and would work with an exterior wall. Watched the video and it seemed straight forward. Then read through the instructions and got started. I was installing the small door for two cats, but still took the extra time (minutes) to frame the opening with 2×4’s. For the extra couple of minutes I got a sturdy base that I could screw the frame into rather than depending on the toggle bolts. I understand why they provide the toggles, and they probably could have worked, but I tend to do things for the long-term.
Total install time, start to finish was less than 3 hours, including 2 trips to the home improvement store. In that time I had to move an electrical supply line plus get a masonry bit and grinding wheels for my angle grinder, so that I could fight through the concrete exterior wall surface. But those are issues with my home, not with this product. The product and the included instructions were every bit what I hoped for.
I taped the two flaps open and the cats were going in and out within a few minutes.
Perfecta para muros. La estructura es de plstico y de aluminio es el marco en blanco. Pero an as est muy bien diseada, es estanca a fro y viento con su doble cortina y hace poco ruido al ser usada.
High quality and solid build. Highly recommended.
Minor observation. Small size is too narrow for Shih tzu but the medium one looks too big.
Good quality. works well, fairly easy to install with decent instructions. Has been great for our two beagles..
Best freedom ever!!! No more opening and closing the door. Our dog feels free as well. Thanks!!!
My wall was too thick for this so I’ll have to purchase the extender. Currently, I have duct tape closing the gap until I can find an extender. Otherwise, it works great. Seems to keep the drafts out, I don’t feel the cool air coming through the doorway. 🙂
Quality product, easy to install with a professional looking finish. If my dog wasn’t afraid of the dual flaps, it would be perfect. Lol
Was easy to put together and works perfect for our Shiz Tu
Looks good, well made. Have yet to fit it. It could have been designed for a cavity wall by having a longer tunnel assembly. As it is it can still be used but will require extra surround pieces.
Five Stars But For Hardware. I installed the small pet tunnel between an interior room and the enclosed garage. The walls are standard 2×4 stick construction and there was ‘just enough’ overlap of the two halves to complete the tunnel. Exterior walls may well require the purchase of the extension. The tunnel material is a little flimsy and I could have possibly used the extension to firm up the tunnel. The directions do include guidance on adding wood support under the tunnel inside the wall, which I did. After the two halves were assembled in the wall I used an expensive duct tape to seal and align the overlapping halves. The result inside looked pretty good.
My only real beef was over the molly bolts that are used to secure the tunnel in the dry wall. They were so cheap I had to bathe the wings and springs in WD-40 and exercise all 8 of them to get them to pop open. When I had initially compressed the wings to put them through the dry wall I had to pry them back out to the open position. Cheapest mollies I have ever encountered.
Super. Just as advertised. Easy to install. Have ordered an additional solid door, and one additional flap, as winters can be hard on plastic. I would recommend to anyone with a small dog.
This is an awesome little cat door. I wish I had purchased one slightly smaller as it is almost too small for our cats but they still squeeze through it. It is deep enough to go through most standard wall thickness’s and is relatively easy to install. Was a bit finicky to try and install in cedar siding but managed to make it work and looked great in the end. I love the double flaps because it makes a huge difference to air flow coming through the cat door. Definitly a good quality product.
Installed easily and it keeps out the drafts with the double door. I love i
Perfect for our cats to get into the garage! Our male is about 20 lbs and fits fine.
Terrific dog door! A bit tricky to install but it looks great and is well sealed so there is little to no change in temperature surrounding the door.
great product. easy installation, good video on their website/youtube explaining installation.
I installed through an exterior 2×4 wall with stucco exterior. The alignment tool (cardboard box you place in the wall and drill from inside out to line-up outside template) worked very well. i used a sawzall with a diamond blade to cut the stucco.
I decided to put a 1×4″ in the wall underneath the dog door to give it some support. Otherwise, I think the dog would be afraid to step on it.
came with lots of screws and even toggle bolts. about the only thing you’ll want is some caulk around the outside frame if exposed to the weather. mine goes to a covered porch, so I didn’t bother.
tip #1: make sure that the two halves of the dog door are really lined up with each other before final mounting. If they are slightly shifted (left/right) of each other, the edge of the inner flap will rub on the outer frame and may not fall back into place once the dog goes out.
Tip #2: to get your dog trained to go through a double flap, take off the outer flap for the first week or two until the dog is comfortable going in and out, then reinstall it.
Very easy to install – the hard part is getting the dogs to use it!
We are not skilled carpenters but the two of us managed to install this door with little trouble. The instructions were remarkably well written, clear and easy to follow, and the graphics helped. Both templates were well cut, marked and accurate, and all of the screws, washers and toggle bolts were included. I’m quite sure that the completeness of the directions and pieces were because it seems that this product is made in the USA! We could only imagine how the instructions would have read had it been made in China or elsewhere where English is not a natural language. (btw, the instructions are also included in French and Spanish).
The only glitch we encountered was really our fault. When you get to step 4B, where you insert the cardboard folded piece into the front/interior side of the door, be careful that it is lodged securely and straight. Ours skewed a bit resulting in a slight misalignment of the outside hole with the interior holes that we sawed out. But, given that there was sufficient ‘play’ in how the two pieces met inside the wall. the result was most satisfactory. I would also say that for those with lesser carpentry skills it is easier for two people to install this item, rather than just one.
This door has made our lives so much better! Our rescue kitty, Zack, was hesitant to use it at first (he’s small and shy, is hesitant about everything), but after a couple days, he got the hang of it. What we like most about it, is that it has the two flaps for an air lock effect. It has no problem keeping the inside of our house cool in summer, much appreciated as Vegas summers run as high as 115 degrees. Because he was a rescue, and, we think, was abused, Zack is naturally skittish and holding the patio door open for him for a full minute while he peeks around and decides whether or not to go out is a thing of the past. We did add a little stairway (stairway? OK, so it’s really just bricks stacked together) on the outside of our home as the exterior lip of the cat door is a tad high for him. If you buy this product, my only suggestion would be sure to install a block under the tunnel for support as it looks like the plastic might crack if your cat is heavy. Have no idea how long the integrity of flaps will last with our drastic temps, but the box included a reorder slip should the need arise.
Door works great! Love it and was easy to install. My 2 dogs love it.
The only thing that is aluminum is the white frame
A well made product with easy to follow instructions…the installation went smoothly very pleased with everything would highly recommend !
Overall, this product is pretty solid. The only metal part of the product itself though is the frame right around the flap, don’t let the “aluminum pet door” title fool you. The interior connector piece itself and cover are all plastic. Just make sure you don’t over tighten it. The flap is fairly durable, but the magnet on the bottom of the flap…. definitely not puppy proof. My corgi had both flap magnets chewed off within a week or two. Now I don’t have a proper seal and I don’t feel like spending $30 for two flaps just to replace the magnets, that’s a little too expensive considering I paid about $68 for the whole package. All in all it’s easy to self install depending on what type of exterior material you’re going through. I’d recommend this for someone with a senior dog, but not for anyone with a puppy. I’d stick to metallic or solid type door systems.
Update. 4/9/16 Contacted the company to register my product and explained the problem with the puppy tearing the magnets out. They were happy to send me two replacement flags as a courtesy replacement and recommended a few ways to prevent him from chewing on it again. Thank you for your great customer service even when it was no fault of their own! Now 5 stars due to the outstanding customer service!
Have had this for almost 2 years. Easy to install in wall. Works fine. 2 flaps with magnets keep it closed and I only stuffed it with insulation to keep out the -20 weather for a short spell last winter.
Perfect for my new dog house. Was looking for a robust doir which can hold a 10cm insulated dog house.
Great product and easy install! No more getting up in the middle of the night to let the dog out!
Door seems good and solid. Install into my exterior wall in my garage was a breeze, an hour max to complete. Althought it is a Large, it will not fit a Large dog, we have 2 12 year old lab/retreivers and they will not fit.
Besides that, great door, good price.
Great product, just what we were looking for. Using it for cats though as this would only accommodate a small dog. Great price & very quick shipping, very satisfied
Great product! This is actually the second one I’ve installed (new house) and I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it at how thorough the instructions were for my particular application (last time is was wood siding to cut through, this time it was stucco). While I did google and read about cutting into stucco, the instructions were detailed enough to guide me through it with no complications. My children enjoyed watching me do the project (especially the Skilsaw portion) and they and the dog, were very happily crawling in and out the moment the weather-proofing silicon (not included) was dried. My only criticisms are to do with the attachment hardware and the frame. Firstly, the toggle bolts are a pain to deal with. Thankfully, I had studs on either side and was able to mount it and anchor directly into the solid house structure, making it feel much more well-supported to me. Structurally, if the mounting holes on the frame were metal reinforced, I’d have more confidence in it for durability, I fear that eventually the plastic will weaken around the screws (even with the washers in place). Time will tell, but for now we have a great new wall door for the doggie (and the small people who refuse to close the patio slider door on their way in and out).
Good quality, Fast shipping at a decent price. I would buy another. Thank you.
For the price, it was better quality than expected. Time will tell how well the flaps hold up, but so far it looks promising.
I love this little door. It is being used by my cat. When he is outside it is easier for him to come and go as he pleases even when we are out. The door was installed so that he can comme into the garage for safety or food.
Plastic inside along the bottom (where dog’s step) got broken on mine over time. Did not take long for the dogs to figure out how to use it and we do not notice a draft around the door in the winter. It get’s below -30 C where I live during a few days in the winter.
Great product. Solidly constructed. The flaps are too heavy for our small pets, though.
Easy to install, fits perfectly. I am using it on an inside wall, so I removed the flaps as my cat really didn’t like them.
This went in easy with a few tweaks. My two new puppies learned to use it after a couple of hours no problem. Not so much for our 10 year old dog, he will go out it but still gives me his que he wants and stands at the dog door until I say go go and then he goes out. Hopeful he will catch on soon. I only use one flap for now but in colder weather we will use it.
WE HAVE MANY CATS AND DOGS SO IT IS A NON STOP TRIP TO THE DOOR TO EITHER LET SOMEONE OUT OR BACK INSIDE. HAVING THE DOOR LEFT AJAR BECOMES A NEW ISSUE WITH THE FLYING PESTS THAT TAKE OVER OUR HOME AND END UO DRIVING US
“BUGGIE!”. THIS LET DOOR IS WONDERFUL AND THE PETS AND US LOVE IT! IT WAS EASY TO INSTALL AND EVERYONE WITH FOUR LEGS COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!
For years we used a doggie door that fit into our sliding glass patio door. But we recently replaced the sliding glass doors for french doors and had to find an alternative for our little Chihuahua to get in and out at will.
No matter how “easy” the directions imply, it seems that my husband and I always will find a way to screw it up. This installation was no different. It is a little harder to install a pet door through a wall than through a door. Our problem came when trying to line up the cut from the inside wall to the outside wall. Even with the template, we did not line up exactly. But we weren’t off too far and were able shave off the uneven parts to get the door to line up. (I would suggest using a level to line up the 2nd cut.) The project only took a couple of hours and it works and looks great. Since this door has two flaps we had to tape up one flap until our dog got used to used to walking through a double flap wall instead of a single flap door. But she is fine with it now. We also love that the double flaps helps with drafts. Our old single flap door let in a lot of cold air. Having the two flaps makes a huge difference.
I have two 50+ pound dogs that try to go out this door at the same time. You will want to reinforce the opening like other reviews have stated. I built a frame in the wall out of wood after cutting the opening, and then had more “meat” to secure the door to, as well as adding insulation before bolting the door in. I had to get washers for the part that secures to the wall, and use wood screws to screw it into the frame. I also got 8 bolts and nuts to secure the white frame door flap to the opening (you’ll need to do this before putting it in the wall). The supplied screws for the white frame were a joke, and wouldn’t even stay in against your smallest dog. I think for the money, these improvements could have been included in the kit, but did not cost me more that an extra $5 at the local hardware store and some scrap wood, but just make sure you get short enough bolts (mine were the same length and diameter as the supplied screws).
Since the reinforcing, the dogs run through the door non-stop. My child has also found that putting things through it makes them temporarily disappear, so the included door slide to keep it closed is helpful.
The flaps are easy to clean dirt/grime/dog snot off of.
This door was used to replace a single door unit. It is a much better weather proof door and was an easy installation. We will save considerably on our heating bill this winter because of this dual flap door.
I really like this product. We are renovating our house and decided to put in a larger cat door for my big butted cat. We put it in the wall and it wasn’t that hard to figure out. My cats have been going through a single flap door and I was worried about the double flaps, but no problems at all. My big boy (20 plus lbs) doesn’t have to squeeze himself through a normal sized cat door. It also has a door to lock them in at night, which is one of the things I looked for. It was a good price and I received it very quickly. I do recommend this product for anyone thinking about putting a pet door in the wall.
Very sturdy , good functioning door , appropriate size for my Siberian Huskys. Great for giving your dogs access to a garage or shed , but wouldn’t use for a house as it cannot be secured shut to insure only your dogs come through it.
I don’t know who loves it more the dogs or the owners. Our dogs love being able to let themselves ou
This Pet Door is as described, except as stated by others, the outer frame is plastic (I have no issues with this). The instructions to install this door are lengthy, because they assume you have minimal tools. (It is stated to use a jig saw, which is the easiest way to cut the holes). Once you have cut the first door in, they tell you to fold up the paper template and insert it to the end of the channel and drill holes through to the outer wall. This allows you to take the template to the other side and cut that side out. Rather than try a fold the paper just right, and then get it placed at the end of the channel perfectly, I used a long drill bit to drill each corner of the channel. This made it easy to locate and cut the other side. I had this door installed in 2 hours, from assembling tools to finish. Note: if you are installing under a window, remember that the window sill angles down outside, so this can be an issue if you install the door too high on the inside. Read the directions though, there are some good points. If you are not handy at all, I would suggest paying the money and having it installed
Overall this is a good product. I have 2×4 construction w/ stucco and didn’t have any problems with the installation. However I built a 2×4 frame inside the wall to secure this unit. Works much better once you figure out the dimensions. There really isn’t much aluminum on this unit though, the only thing that is aluminum is the frame that holds the doors. The rest is heavy duty plastic for the outer frame and flimsy plastic where the two sides slide into each other. In fact, with my setup the inside ‘box’ had the edges pushed out where the other fits in.. reducing the acutal opening size. A little bit of two sided velcro and it kept the plastic near the outer box. Problem solved. Two flaps instead of one is nice for keeping out the cold/heat and any small bugs etc. It does make it a bit more of a challenge for the dogs to go through though.. and sometime the magnets stick to each other.. but I think this will go away with use. Overall I am pleased… just know what your getting as cuting into walls / doors is kinda permanent.
I didn’t have any install issues. I almost missed it in the directions but they provide a simple way to line up the 2 sections of the unit pretty flawlessly. It includes part of the packaging that I threw away initially. One of the cardboard pieces in the packaging is used to line up the holes so both sections come together. Easy. I placed filler pieces under the unit so it didn’t flex and wear so quickly as the dogs go in and out. I also placed a small piece of carpet on the floor between the two flaps–kind of cleans their feet a bit as they come in.
Training the dogs, I pinned up both flaps for about 4 days. Once they came and went pretty frfeely, I put one flap down. About a week later, I was able to put the second flap down.
It isn’t as sturdy as I would have liked but once installed, it holds together better than you think. I don’t think there will be any issues.
Unless you spend a lot more money, I don’t think you’ll find much better. This unit is fitting our needs just fine. Not bulky. Sturdy enough (after install). Go for it!
I have a glass door that leads to my backyard and there was really no way to install a dog door in the existing door. I’m pretty energy conscience and was a bit concerned over how much air leakage there would be. I installed the large dog door a few months ago and wanted to wait until the temperature dropped before submitting my review. Well, it’s cold and rainy outside now and I can say with confidence that the air leakage is minimal. The hardwood floors directly under the dog door is not noticeably colder than rest of the floor. I caulked the heck out of it both inside and outside around the frame and would definitely suggest doing that. It seems to help. The installation went pretty smoothly. The only improvement in the design that I would suggest is that the rounding of the corners is a bit problematic if you stay within the lines of the template. You’ll have to go back and drill out a bit more material for it to actually fit into the wall. Other than that, installation was really easy. (Drywall inside, a concrete composite material outside) The magnets do an excellent job of keeping the flaps in place but aren’t so strong that is causes difficulties for the animals to get in and out. My 60 pound Golden Retriever and my cat (unfortunately) jump in and out all day long. I have noticed that there is a schmutz mark on the flaps from where the animals push it open. A damp wash cloth is all it takes to clean it off.
This is an updated review. I would buy it again. I have it in and it works. Does it seal out the weather, yes, and we are talking Alaska here. The edges of the flaps leak but only just a minute amount. You can stand by it and you won’t get cold and want to move. The magnetic bottom edges hold it in place very well indeed. The one I bought is a large. This means it will not fit in between the studs and so some carpentry and dry wall repair has to take place. The install video and the instructions reference the “A” side alot but neither side is marked in any way I could find. I assumed the side with the box like object fitted from the inside was side “A” and I seem to have been right. The door is not all aluminum only the frame that holds the slide in door in place the rest is plastic. The verticle aluminum side pieces are just cut from longer pieces and left open at the ends, if not caulked will leak water into the interior of the door. Not hard to do, it just seems that the manufacturer would design it better considering its intended use. If you have two dogs of disparate sizes the template installation method can be forgotten. Still, if you can think you can do it, go for it. Took me about 12 hours all together and that’s about what I thought it would take me.
I already had a dog door on my home before I bought this. I built it myself and used a heavier plexiglass door. The end result was that my dogs didn’t like it at all..
So I bought this door instead. Two of my three dogs started using it almost instantly. The third is a bit more timid so I’ll have to take more time training him. However the other two love it.
Installation only took about 30 minutes because I already had a wall opening that was big enough. I also had solid wood behind the wall surface, so I didn’t need to use the butterfly nuts that came with the door. I used stainless steel screws instead. However I also added stainless steel washers under the screw heads because the plastic for the frame is kind of flimsy. You’ll push the screw head right through the plastic if you’re not careful. Adding washers resolves that problem.
Additionally, I used “Good Stuff” expanding foam to insulate around the tunnel. Make sure you leave the drainage holes open. I also put silicone caulking around the frame to weather proof it. When doing this, make sure you don’t put caulking across the bottom of the frame. This will also fill up the drain holes.
All in all it is a great product. It could use just a little more refinement but better products tend to cost a significant amount more. However, most importantly, the dogs actually use it.
I bought this to replace an existing electronic dog door. I have to say that I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. The double flaps offer superior insulating value over the single pane of the existing door. It did take quite a few treats and a lot of patience to get the dogs to actually go through the door initially. They were used to the previous electronic door opening for them so something touching their backs was making them nervous. Initially we removed one of the doors until getting them trained and once they were comfortable with the process I installed the 2nd door. It took about a week to get through the whole training process with our bulldogs who are very “bull headed” with new things.
My only regret is that we bought a much more expensive electronic door originally thinking it would be superior to an “old school” door. Boy were we wrong. The electronic version is nothing but a money pit with replacing collars, limit switches, and gear motor assemblies.
You will need to frame in a box for the opening as the tunnel is somewhat flimsy. This is very easy to do and took no time at all. This is stated in the manual that comes with it. I read some other reviews that complained about this but all I can say to them is; “When all else fails, read the directions!” Common sense dictates that the tunnel will need support while you are putting the thing together. You will also want to make sure to caulk the exterior so that it is completely weatherproofed. This is also stated in the directions.
Thanks PetSafe and Amazon for offering a great product at a great price!
This dog door has been great for our Yorkie. However, we did remove one of the flaps (it has a double flap) and just use the one. It didn’t take long to train him to go thru either. We just tapped the one flap up if we were going to be away for the day and he would use it. Then we gradually worked with him (I would use treats and have him go in and out for about 20 minutes), and got him to go thru holding the door half open. At the second or third time (these sessions were several days apart) he finally got it. He always used it from then on.
As we have been approaching fall, I did try to put the second flap back on, and realized we were starting completely from scratch (ugh!). And since he went out so well before, I don’t think I am going to use it with the 2 flaps.
Installation was a little tricky, but not because of the product – going through stucco was difficult, but can be done. We love the dog door and when my dad came and stayed with my kids, he commented on how he would like one like that too for his cats.
Plus, buying from amazon saved me about $10.00 (it shipped free too) over the pet stores by me.
Revision: cold weather hit and we did feel a draft with only the one door flap on, so we are training him thru the second flap.
