great ice cream maker expensive but you get what you pay for makes ice cream and gelato to perfection mixed greek yogurt and cream together with a little sugar and set it to gelleto wow came out creamy and set to perfection great buy
Good machine, the only bad thing i can say is that seems to struggle sometimes when its full
Very happy with this ice cream maker.
Very easy to use and clean.
Quiet and efficient. Makes great chemical free frozen confectionery. Frozen yogurt, gelato, and more!
Sage product at their best, we have 2 Sage Barista Expresso Coffee machines so when it came to purchasing an Ice Cream maker I didn’t look anywhere else. The build quality, ease of use and of course brilliant Ice Cream makes me highly recommend this product.
Hi
Had the Sage for a couple of weeks now. Made 6 batches of ice-cream in different flavours all have tasted excellent.
1 problem I have noticed is the paddle struggles to turn & almost stops when the progress bar goes into the 1st notch of the ice-cream section. Is this normal
A fantastic Sage product as always. Exactly as described. Easy to use and easy to clean. Perfect.
This is an excellent piece of kit. Could possibly do with having a larger capacity but otherwise no complaints
What I was disappointed with was the lack of recipes in the box, in fact the lack of Heston Blumenthal anywhere in the instructions. Has Heston parted company with Breville’s Sage brand? However, nip off to Lakeland’s website and look up the info on Sage’s Smart Scoop Ice Cream Maker and you’ll find the original Heston’s recipes to download and print, but buy your ice cream maker from Amazon as they’re cheaper. I recommend the quick vanilla ice cream recipe using a can of condensed milk, with milk and whipping cream and plenty of vanilla extract for the perfect vanilla ice cream that’s dead easy to make, omit the vanilla and use it as a basis to many other flavours too like chocolate, strawberry, coffee, mint chip choc or whatever you fancy. You can mix in the ingredients before or add ‘add ins’ whilst the ice cream is churning it will let you know when to add things, like chocolate chips or fruit. I’ve found using frozen fruit from the supermarket works great in ice cream, as do cookies, mini marshmallows and fudge. Caramel and vanilla is heavenly too. I have yet to try a gelato or sorbet, but I will soon. It’s a worthwhile purchase for the quality of churned ice cream you can make with it, without the hassle of having to pre freeze a bowl in an ice cream maker without a compressor. I recommend putting the pre cool button on first, the machine then let’s you know when it’s ready for the ice cream mixture then simply press the start button. I haven’t tried the keep cool button as I tend to take the ice out and put it into a tub in the freezer. I have learnt that more vanilla extract or a drop of vodka to the mixture helps it freezing up rock hard, making it easier to scoop out once frozen in the freezer. I’ve had one experience of a crunching noise whilst it churned, but I think that was adding sticky ingredients like syrup which I think made it difficult for the blade to turn, I didn’t experience it the next ice cream I made. Stick to adding syrups after it has churned in the tub before freezing. Add sugar to the mixture and blend before churning. The times vary not just on type of ice cream but on the temperature outside the machine will affect it I’ve noticed. Hot days it takes longer. The most is 52 minutes plus pre freezing, so plan ahead if you want it after dinner. The ice cream van bell at the end is fun and makes all big kids smile, including me. Enjoy experimenting with your flavours and venture forward with making ‘proper’ ice cream making an egg ‘custard’ as a basis, I have tried ready made fresh custard from the supermarket, it doesn’t work well just frozen on its own. Stick with the condensed milk version to begin with until you feel more confident.
I hope my review has been helpful, I know I rely on reviews too to make my mind up when purchasing on Amazon.
What an amazing mahine that makes superb sorbets / ice creams. Freezes very well. So eash. Very sturdy.
I read lots and lots of reviews before I bought this and compared similar machines to this one before purchase as well , my only previous experience was using a slightly bigger machine in a cookery school class ( and I cannot remember the brand )
This machine has lived up to all my expectations and makes delicious ice cream, it is soft scoop when it’s fully churned and finished , it’s almost pourable to get it out of the machine then you harden it up in the freezer , lots of reviews seem to think they should have a brick of solid ice cream as the final product but common sense must surely see that it would be impossible for the machine to produce it any firmer and still be able to churn ?
I have followed quite a few different recipes from my vast collection of cookery books but now most of the time I make a custard using a recipe from Willie harcourt cooze ‘s chocolate bible using 1/2 quantities and then I leave it to cool in the fridge until I’m ready to make my ice cream, I add 1/2 the custard and whatever I’m going to have as flavour then churn
Flavours of our favourites have been , strawberry ( pure strawberry’s then sieve ) gin and tonic ( generous glug of gin , tonic and a good couple of lines juiced ) chocolate ( melt good quality Belgium chocolate , add to custard whilst still warm and stir in ) coffee and Kahula ( double espresso plus a generous glug of kahula ) rum and raisin ( soak raisins in dark rum for a few days for best results ) – just to give you a few ideas !
Definitely would recommend this machine the ice cream it produces is delicious and perfect if you are an addict as we are , ir mostly stays out on the counter as it’s about the size of a small microwave and we use it a couple of times a week on average , it is reasonably easy to clean most but not all bits go in the dishwasher , not the churn bucket Though but it’s easy to wash in the sink by hand ,
Last but important note – don’t over fill the churn bucket as the ice cream does grow as it churns and it needs room to move around
Please spend a moment and hit the helpful button and make my writing up of this review worthwhile
This is a great machine for a complete novice like me. I am now making the most wonderful ice creams. The machine does it all for you. And then you can tweak it to exactly the way you want. Simply a wonderful machine delivering perfect soft scoop flavourful ice cream.
I’ve read reviews of people trying to make their churned ice cream look like the stuff that comes in the tubs in a supermarket!
That’s never going to happen! Even the supermarket stuff isn’t solid ice cream when the factory machine squirts it into its little environmentally conscious cardboard tub. Otherwise it wouldn’t be squirtable (it’s not churned solid into the tub).
It’s only through FREEZING does the ice cream become firmer.
This machine will churn to a scoopable consistency. You can’t expect a churner to make anything solid. That defies the point of churning.
Once the machine has churned it to a scoopable point, the onus is on you to stick it in the freezer if you want firm ice cream.
I try to leave fair and honest reviews, as I myself, really appreciate a genuine review before I decide on my own purchases.
Hope this review helps you decide whether this product is for you. If not, I am happy to answer more questions!
The ice cream truck music when the ice cream is ready is a great fun touch for the whole family.
Bought this as an upgrade to my lakeland starter ice cream maker. With this I don’t need to have pre-frozen bowls which is a definite plus. Had some issues at first with the machine cutting out. Moved it so it had more space around it and it worked fine. I have used it 3 times so far and opted for the gelato setting. However I found this still too soft so next went to the end of the scale for firmer ice cream. It wasn’t a lot different to soft set gelato!
he sage BCI600UK ice cream maker is the tops i have uesd my ice cream maker only a few times and i love it i only made ice cream so far and look forward to doing the rest i had to get a recipes book with over 200 recipes in it that means lots more to do.if you thinking about buying a ice cream maker than buy a sage it is the best it came before time and it very good for the money if you want the best pay more for it.
Cant give it five stars, due to lack of instruction manual. I’ve never bought a gadget before that has NO instructions or guides before, so unless you already are well acquainted with the workings of fully automatic ice cream machines (which I am not) then you’re a bit stuck. Even a trawl through youtube only returned videos of people extolling the virtues of the machine and how fantastic it is, but no clue as to ingredients, quantities, order of addition etc.
I had to purchase a book, and hope I was doing it right. The couple of times I have used it the ice cream has turned out very nice, My granddaughter was disappointed not to have the ice cream van chime playing when it finished – still not managed to work out how to get this to sound!
I’m sure this will be a machine that is used a lot once we’re used to it. But I still think a basic instruction manual wouldn’t go amiss
My 18year old absolutely loves it…my budding engineer/chef.:0)
Love it, does exactly as expected, if you’re looking for an Icecream maker then this is the one. The kids love the Icecream van music when it is done
Did not know what to expect from this stainless steel machine with some buttons and a display. Actually it does very good ice cream from all the ingredients we have thrown into it. The LCD does not lie and the pre cool and keep cool functions are really handy.
I did a lot of reviewing of other products and I liked the fact this one does actually cool the ice mixture as it is being made, unlike some where you have to put it in the fridge first, this one you don’t, and I love the Jingle after the ice cream has finished.
Would highly recommend this.
Very easy to use and makes excellent ice cream I don’t have experience from other products but this one is grea
I’ve also made some ‘skinny’ strawberry ice cream – creme fraiche, strawberries and a couple of spoons of half spoon sugar. Again worked perfectly.
Watermelon sorbet – just using watermelon and nothing else. This one turned more into watermelon granita than a sorbet but that might be because I was impatient for it to be done.
The pre cool function is really good, as is the auto function and being able to just tell the machine whether you want sorbet, frozen yogurt, ice cream and the level of hardness you want and then off it goes.
Has a really nifty keep cool function – most ice cream makers you have to take the finished article out as soon as its done otherwise it will melt – with this one it keeps it at the chosen setting for up to three hours.
And it plays an old fashioned ice cream van tune when its finished
I ordered on prime and had next day delivery – however, the box was delivered upside down. As it was a heavy box I couldn’t see that the delivery driver would have turned it over when taking out of the van (why would he?), so I assumed that it was transported upside down too. Having read about this happening to someone else on the reviews I was aware that this could cause damage. I pointed out the fact that it was upside down to the delivery driver, and his reaction was to turn the box over (as if that would solve the problem!!). It clearly said on the box that it had to be kept the right way up. So I rejected the delivery as it would be a bit like receiving a freezer upside down and not knowing what damage had been done.
I used the Amazon call back process to find out if I needed to reorder and they were really helpful. Original delivery was about 4.30 in the afternoon, they immediately reordered another for next day delivery and that one was sent by DPD. Was delivered around lunch time, the right way up. And I had checked that it wasn’t the same one recycled for me as I took note of the item number on the original delivery item!
You have to wait for 12 hours from removing from the box to use to allow the freezer compressor (or whatever its called) to settle, so the next day I was up and running with making ice cream.
One previous review mentioned that the central pole in the bowl can’t be removed. This is correct but I can’t see that this will cause any issues as it is easy to remove all the ice cream from the pole once you have taken the mixing blade out so I don’t see this as a problem.
Best ice cream ever, and you know exactly what is in it.
I personally find the ‘Keep Cool’ setting very useful as it gives me the option of going out and leaving it/ eating supper knowing that pudding is ready!
The whole family each has there favourite ice cream and this macheine makes it possible to always have them in the freezer! Much cheaper than buying tubs in supermarkets.
I have made many batches of gelato with this machine. Had it for many years now, still working first class. It plays a tune of an ice cream van when it’s finished, lovely touch.
great if you want to eat healthy without additives. would recommend highly, well worth every penny .
This model is heavy, but that is to be expected given the built in compressor. It cools quickly to temperature, and when in auto mode, you can choose what type of ice cream you want to make and it will churn until the correct temperature and consistency is reached.
However, like most things, the end result is only as good as the ingredients, and don’t underestimate the skill and effort needed to make a good base. My issue is that most of the recipes I have found, especially for Gelato, result in an end product that is too eggy in flavour. This is most likely to do with when the custard base is being prepared and the egg is over-cooked. I consider myself a good cook but have not yet perfected this!
The best revenue I have found was using the B&J non-custard base recipie, the book is available on Amazon and I’d recommend.
Back to the device itself, my only problems with it are:
– Noise, it really isn’t the quietest
– Paddle is difficult to get out of the mixture when it’s done
– Doesn’t have a separate Gelato paddle, which Sage say isn’t necessary but I’m not too sure
Ultimately it’s a very good machine, not sure if it’s really worth the premium over other makes of the same type as I don’t own those, but I consider the build quality and reputation to be good enough to believe it is
Can you imagine having your own ice-cream parlour? Well, that is what it is like having the Smart Scoop. I have made loads of different types of ice creams; vanilla, cookies n cream, fresh banana, fresh strawberry, salted caramel, frozen yogurts. They are all absolutely divine. My favourite is always vanilla but the others are delicious too. I have used most of the recipes from the book and also trawled the internet for other; all of which have turned out perfectly.
We are ice cream addicts in my house and this has been used nearly every day. The ice cream is better than anything you can buy in a supermarket including the top end brands. It is super easy to make and quick. It freezes beautifully.
This machine is absolutely amazing. The only drawback is that it is huge; but it is worth it!
It’s a bit noisy, but not as bad as a bread-maker 🙂
The supplied recipes are a good start, but I would recommend experimenting with them.
I’ve managed to reduce the quantities of whipping cream and full-fat milk by adding special ice-cream emulsifier and the results are fantastic and less guilt-inducing 🙂 They also scoop straight from the freezer!
With a bit of maths, the recipes can be made more shopping-friendly too. For example, I scale-up the recipes that use 5 eggs to 6 (which increases the fat and emulsification properties) and reduce the whipping cream down to 300ml (which is a full pot)
makes fabulous ice cream, sorbet’s,frozen yogurts & love the gelato ice cream would highly recommend
Brilliant piece of kit, its been almost in constant use!
I just love it. I am a bit lazy so I tend to make it with natural ingredients and do not cook. The ice cream is gorgeous
This is a fantastic machine and so quiet compared to my last icecream machine … The main reason I swapped was the noise but I was please to find that is is by far a superior machine with so many options
I was looking for a machine that would save me the hard work, but produced *at least* the same smooth quality.
I tested the Wilfa icm-c15, but it took nearly 60 mins to churn 800ml of caramel ice cream, resulting in noticable ice crystals. After receiving the Sage, I tested the exact same recipe, expecting it to finish in about 40 mins. I was blown away when it chimed the “ready” sound after only 20 minutes.
The ice cream turned out to be amazingly smooth with no noticable ice crystals at all. I’d be surprised if you could get substantially better results for less than twice the price of the Sage.
It’s easy to clean, the paddle is easy to quickly scrape off remaining ice cream, operating it in general is as user friendly as they come, and it feels sturdy and well built.
Needless to say, I highly recommend this machine.
You’ll enjoy the ice cream van tune at the end much more than you will ever admit.
Just before if finishes it beeps to let you know when to add your mix. I love the keep cool feature, I left one of the mixtures there for 1:30 hours post churning at the consistency was still perfect.
The only reason I did not give it a 5 star is because of its 1 litre limit, I wish it was at least 1,5 other than that its the best buy and I will do it again..
