Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUpdate 11/12/2021: I have recorded hundreds of synthesizer and electric guitar tracks with my MV88 connected to my iPad 7th generation. The app works great and I can record on the fly. I have connected my synthesizers to a setup of three pairs of studio monitors and this is a massive soundscape. Each of my synths is connected to one pair of studio monitors so I do not get a mushy sound mix. The MV88 is that good that it records even the slightest pitch changing from each synth. It is also very sensitive so when you have a midi controller with clunky keys it will record these noises and add it to your recording. I solved some kind of challenging recording situation by placing my iPad on a separate Stativ so that there is no connection to any of my keyboard stands and synth racks. The MV88 is every musician’s dream by simply plugging in a mic into an iPad and starting the recording in full stereo mode. And the output quality is sheer amazing. I play my recordings from my iPad directly through a Hi-Fi stereo system and no one who listens to my tracks would ever guess that these recordings are just made by this small mic. A winner by all means.
MV88 delivers excellent quality and by far more than what I expected from such a mini-looking device. I bought this to record some of my synth and keyboard tunes without having to use the periphery of a mixer setup. Well, with this simple mic connected to my iPad recordings work out pretty well. The output quality is not too mushy and one can clearly hear and distinguish between the synth pads, the synth keys and the sequencer and arpeggiator sounds. Awesome! And of course, if my playing is recorded with a software like Ableton and connected thru a mixer, the quality is like when you make a studio recording. This is what the MV88 cannot deliver, because it is placed in front of my studio monitors which means the audio signals it receives and transforms into wav.files are different as if one records his playing with a complete software/mixer setup. A no-brainer . But for recording on the fly, this mic is priceless. The manual is worth to study, especially the settings part is a must to read. Try every knob and turn on/off every feature, you will be surprised what a difference it makes e.g. when it comes to using the compressor and limiter functions. Use ALL of the setting functions in different setups and you will be rewarded by a superb recording quality! Today I recorded for the first time some tunes I played on my electric guitar thru a stereo setup by using two ampheads and cabinets and various delay/echo pedal settings In my home studio. Wow, the MV88 is able to produce a superwide stereo image, I can hear the ping pong trails note by note, and there is no loss in low and high notes. Chords sound clear too! I converted each song into 256 bps mp4a files and emailed it to friends. Their feedback was positively overwhelming! It is true, size does not matter, and in this case I can say that the MV88 delivers such outstanding quality that even a 5*rating does not even come close to what this mic is able to handle when it comes to recording songs on the fly. I use it now every day for each and every recording as it is also a most valuable tool to improve on my playing quality, it is the perfect trainer for anybody who seriously likes to improve his playing abilities! A top notch mic at an affordable price! Superb!! EDIT 04-17-21: I recorded all my studio synth tracks via my iPad by connecting the MV88 to my iPad nd by positioning the MV 88 on a stand between both monitors (Edifier series). The recording quality comes close to recording with a DAW. I played the saved recordings through my amp system by connecting the iPad to my Onkyo system. You can’t tell the difference between playing a CD and playing these recordings. It is that clear in sounding. This mic captures every noise, so don’t cough, sneeze or shuffle your feet during recording. It even captured the chirping of birds in our backyard when I left the window open during my studio sessions. One needs to balance out the input impedance to prevent any distortion. However, this mic is the BEST in terms of recording quality. The Ahure engineers did a truly great job on this one.

Best product in the market which supports iOS devices, when you have an option to hear the output on real-time is the best feature you get along with the microphone.

Shure has provided two applications such as Motiv audio and Motiv video, where we can juggle around with the audio settings, which gives control in our hand to make the audio feel more refined and structured.

Shure is a well known brand and best for microphones, Go for it to explore many things! Cheers Shure Team!

The Shure MV88 is a great mic for my IPhone 11. I chose this mic so that I can record my acoustic practice sets w vocal and guitar, live music and family vlogs. With the different polar patterns to choose from it also captures great audio when I record videos of family and friends. The sound quality is excellent. I had purchased a shot gun mic for 1/2 the cost but I didn’t care for the dangling wires or extra accessories so I gave it to my daughter. It’s plug and play with option to use the Free Shure MOTIV Audio / Video App which gives you access to the the settings. This unit was purchased from Adorama via Amazon. I am very satisfied with my purchase and would buy this unit again. Highly recommend. 5 Stars

I loved the clarity and depth that this little mic picks up. I use it for doing audition self tests . It’s so great at getting every little sound and detail from what you’re saying . Unlike the standard inbuilt mic for iPhone .

A nice little tripod stand that works well with our android and iOS phones. Only criticism is that there should be the option to tilt the upper section and even elevate it an inch or two more. Found we had to go Jenga style and build platforms for the tripod to sit on to get to a reasonable height!

This microphone is really cool and the app is great! Easy to choose from presets for recording and streaming whether it’s just a voice recording, music, or loud concert. Easy to use manual settings also. I recommend downloading the manual for a simple read. The mic can be adjusted for many scenarios. Problems that I think need to be addressed for improving this mic are having a bypass to plug in a power cord when the mic is being used, possibly a head phone jack (although most people use blue tooth headphones now) and a longer blade to plug it into the iPhone as you have to take the phone out of the phone case to plug it in.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersAfter researching lots of microphones of several different makes, I was deliberating between the MV88 and the MV88+ Video Kit. Even though the info pointed to the mics being used for iphone and ipad, I wanted the option to be able to connect to my macbook pro but I wasn’t sure it would work as it was unclear from the Amazon info. Only when I received the mic/video kit did I see in the info that it is compatible**.

I am a professional classical musician and wanted a decent mic that I could also record and teach online with. I would highly recommend. The video kit comes with two cables (Lightning cable, USB-C cable). I found them a bit short for what I need as I also use a separate tripod to the one included. I therefore purchased a longer USB-Cable.

SHURE MV88+ USE WITH MACBOOK PRO:
If you are using the MV88+ with an iphone/ipad, you can adjust the mic patterns/settings in the SHURE MOTIV app. ** The MV88+ works perfectly with my macbook pro. However, mic settings cannot be adjusted when used in conjuction with a macbook (as you need the app) as noted on the Shure website general info. However, the microphone does retain its last settings as configured by the MOTIV app which is great.

    MIC PATTERNS:
The Shure MV88+ offers various mic patterns (and other advanced settings) including Stereo, MonoCardioid, MonoBidirectional or RawMid-Side pick-up patterns.

N.B When you record video on an iPhone/iPad, be aware that you will not be able to hear play back unless you remove the microphone wire.

Excellent product and easy to set up. Takes some setting adjustments to get the right level for your requirements but the app registers your setting and saves it for next time.

The mic is robust and with the App vey easy to use. I have recorded solo cello which is a hard task with very satisfactory results. The only issue I had with the App was not realising that there are different edit and share option on the portrait screen from the landscape version. Changing the file type and export are really easy.

It is a great microphone but having JUST a lightning connection directly limits its use (can’t use it with my dJI Osmo Mobile 3). It would have been handy to have the option to use a cable and mount it on a cold shoe etc. And no, THE MV88+ is different but doesn’t solve those problems for mobility either.

Schade.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI upped my rating to 4 stars do to the improvement of this Mic over the built in iPhone 11 Pro mic. I was upset with the short connector as many were. Some said they cut notches in their cases etc….what???? I ordered a small lightening extender and it works perfectly. Stays attached to the MV88 and it is very stable. No need to destroy your case.
I also ordered the MV88+ and am not impressed. There was a firmware update right away so maybe something is screwy but the audio of the 88+ is worse than the MV88. Even the gain setting are not the same. MV88+ has much less reach than the older model. Again…maybe the firmware update messed something up, but I have done about 50 side by side videos with different settings on both and the MV88+ is just not that good.

I’ve been making music content online for about a year now, and quite honestly, using and setting up quality audio equipment are tedious processes, and until I take a music production class, balancing vocals or doing anything to make my voice sound dynamic is something that I find incredibly challenging. In short, it is an onerous process that deters me from wanting to record.
    Enter the Shure MV88.
This device has given me the best of both worlds: audio that is crisp and accessibility like no other. This morning, completely on impulse, I took my guitar off of the wall, plugged my MV88 in, opened the Shure MOTIV Video app (the accompanying app specialized for recording and video production—- it’s free), secured my phone with a tripod, and recorded a cover. Entirely impromptu. The audio “sounded like me” (thank gOD) and in three short minutes I completed a process that would have otherwise taken days (downloading footage from my camera, syncing it with audio in garage band, editing that garage band audio, etc.). If you’re looking for a freeing way to tackle the daunting prospect of recording and producing music that combines convenience with the quality that Shure is famed for, the MV88 is the product for you.

    Totalmente satisfecho.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI make a lot of videos of myself playing trumpet and other instruments for my instagram account. I take this really seriously and I wanted to start taking my sound quality really seriously too. I’m a rising Sophomore in college, music ed major, and I know that for my quickly growing instagram and video competitions like NTC, I could no longer use just my iPhone’s mic. This is so easy to set up, I’m not tech savvy at all and I had zero problems. I love how you can rotate the mic and it has a really well made case for when you’re done using it. It seriously is so easy and convenient. That’s one of the main reasons I love it, it’s just plug in and go…no wires, no heavy stuff, no complicated programs! Here is a short clip that shows dynamics, range, etc. and just how well the mic handles it. Granted, I just got the mic today so this is the automatic setting, no mic gain or compressor adjusted yet. I was about 1 foot away from the mic, trumpet bell facing right at it.

This is far and away the best mic I have used on my iPhone X. It has been used to record interviews and podcast episodes in the field. It feels of solid quality and the sound quality has been great. The MOTIV Audio app has some great and easy to understand info on how to set up your mic for different recording situations. I did purchase a 6′ lightning extension cable so I could put my phone in my pocket and hold the mic in my hand while walking and recording. If you will be recording on the move and or don’t want to hold you phone all the time while recording then I highly recommend this. I also purchased different microphone windscreen. The one that is included is a little bulky for what I wanted. This mic also has a nice little zippered carry case to protect your mic when not in use. I highly recommend this mic for anyone wanting to capture get sound recording on their iOS in all settings!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAlthough I generally use a separate Panasonic video camera, I also have an iPhone SE and an older iPad Pro which I occasionally use for pictures and video. I am not (yet) a vlogger or U tuber. With the continuing improvements in video quality from iPhones and iPads there is a temptation to rely on these lightweight devices when travelling. Sound is frequently the poor relation, often ignored , which will make or break a video however.
So for this product — out of the box we have a nifty Manfrotto mini tripod ( rebranded Shure) and a nice folder package containing the Sure stereo microphone ( with windshield) , its support holder, a plastic (adjustable) phone holder ( not as flimsy as some have suggested) , a USB to USB C mini cable and a USB to iPhone/iPad lightning cable. There are guarantee and safety warning leaflets but sadly NO form of instructions as to how to use or details of the online App (You can use the microphone with or without the App!). You can also monitor the sound with headphones if they fit the minijack socket on the microphone.
Putting aside the lack of instructions (set up is not quite as simple as they think) when it is working is the sound with the microphone better than the onboard microphones? I was hoping that the fact that it is wind shielded and stereo justify the price (mono microphones are available on Amazon significantly lower prices.).
Test site 1 — garden with birds singing in trees both sides of the garden — slight wind (not me)
    a) iPad
Sound quality — Enhanced sound compared to the onboard mike
Stereo effect — detectable when boards singing across the garden
    b) iPhone SE
Sound quality — As for iPad
Stereo effect — As for iPad
Test site 2 — Inside — simple narration to device , in house sounds
    a) iPad
Sound quality — Great for narration — gives a more solid sound compared to the iPad onboard mike — even without the app . When recording general sounds (TV on) — mike was very similar to the onboard mike. (This is playback through the iPad speakers!!)
    b) iPhone SE
Sound quality — As for iPad
Note — the iPad recognised the app had not been downloaded and gave the option to immediately download — I initially tested without the app then checked — there are two apps — one simply for the microphone and the other integrating the video with the sound control.
So, overall a good package , albeit at a price.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersUsed for mainly for recording live music (rock, blues, folk) concerts and home instrumental and vocal recordings, not tried for purely classical concerts yet, although my last recording is of a rock band with full orchestral accompaniment. This is the type of item were you certainly “get what you pay for” having tried cheaper alternatives, the Shure MV88 is head and shoulders above the rest, as you might expect from the Shure brand. Once you have mastered the mobile phone app (I use the iOS app on iPhone 6s+ and iPad Pro 9.7″) which is worth taking some time over as the various setting are for very different recording environments and recording targets.
Monitoring through headphones whilst recording can be a bit hit or miss with connection (sometimes works straight away sometimes not?) but I’m not sure whether that is due to the app or my iPhone, but whether monitored or not the recordings are accurate, crisp and clear with a very good frequency range and response, with little to no extraneous noise, even though the microphone is highly sensitive.
Microphone gain is adjustable up to 36dB boost, as are other settings, microphone setup (there are actually 3 mics within the head) stereo width, compression, limiter, high pass filter, equaliser, wind reduction and left/right swap, with 5 recording environment presets. This microphone only works with Apple products fitted with a “lightning connector” and cannot easily be used if iPhone or iPad is in a case that restricts access to the lightning connector.
Overall I am quite happy with this compact microphone.

Obviously, your iPhone mic sucks. That’s a given. You want to record podcasts, or lectures, or even a tune you fiddled around with on your guitar, but you want to send it to friends and it sounds grainy. You won’t have this problem with the Shure MV88.
With this handy tool, your voice will no longer sound like an embarrassment that makes you consider playing mute when talking to a Tinder date. It’s incredibly portable, links straight to your phone or iPad the second you plug it in, and your device will automatically default to the mic for voice memos, video, and many other 3rd party apps, without you having to sync it or download additional software.
I added to Shure app to my phone just for additional accessibility, but it is not necessary.
So buy this mic, add it to your studio collection, throw it in a backpack, and secretly record your friends conversations for party favors that will never end (besides ending your relationships). Make music, happy people!

UPDATE Sept 2021: I’ve been using this mic since 2018, but now that I have upgraded to iOS devices that have a usb-c port, I would really love an iOS compatible/usb-c version of this microphone and it’s truly a pity they don’t offer one because based on the lightning version, I’d buy it in a heartbeat! It’s really convenient being able to plug a mic directly into an iPad Pro without having to deal with additional cables or mounting systems.

Love the portability factor; recording quality is significantly better than a lav mic I had been using. Really like the small form factor, portability and that it works perfectly with the lightning port on the iPad, and no wires. Feels like a quality build, as well.

I’m not a professional videographer, and this is not as good as, say, the Blue Yeti (which is actually less expensive now, but quite heavy/you cannot travel with it) but I think the sound quality is pretty good for YouTube videos and great for those who need to do audio/voiceovers on the go. I purchased based on numerous positive reviews on YouTube and am very satisfied with it.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBe under no doubt this mic give great results and by far outperforms the microphones build into the iPhone.
I use it to record my kids live gigs; so a very loud environment which benefits from the adjustable gain.

One big oversight is the fact you are not able to plug the microphone into a device that is still in its case. You will also have difficulty if you want to use with a gimbal. The microphone fits (assuming phone is not in a case of course) but faces backwards.

To try and workaround these issues I bought a extension cable (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KDPRPKL) this allows the mic to work with a phone in a case and/or allow the mic to be mounted on the front of a gimbal. Note I tried several extension / splitter cables before finding one that has all connections required for the mic to work.

It seems these are common complaints; maybe Shure should consider bundling a cable/extension (ideally with a right angled lightning connector at the phone end), maybe they could do this in lieu of the rather pointless bundled headphone extension cable.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI was immediately impressed by the quality of recordings I can get with this little mic. The only downside is that I have to take my iPhone out of (slim) case to use it. I wish they included an extender or adapter or something so that I could keep my phone in its case.

It’s only happened to me a couple of times, but it stopped recording when my phone went to sleep. I’m not sure if this is an app bug, an iOS bug, or a hardware bug. In any case, I’m a bit paranoid about checking to see if the recording is still working when using this mic.

I so much want to give this 5 stars for the sound quality, but the other two issues prevent it. (I’m keeping it… good enough for my use case!)

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe quality is solid and rich compared to the iPhone’s sound. It is robust and easy to use. The sound app and the video app work well. However, if you wish to use the iPhone with the mike on a selfie stick for video, then beware that the Shure Motiv Video app does not work with a bluetooth device, so any use of the app means post editing each video to remove the movement caused by hitting the start button in the app and moving the stick away for the selfie. Best to put the iPhone camera on 3 or 10 second delay and use iPhone’s camera app. Otherwise it would be absolutely amazing!

I do quite a bit of studio recording and needed a high quality portable device, and this is great. Very solid build quality, great pop-shield and strong protective carry case. The audio quality is very good. On a direct comparison, recording using the iphone mic, then using the MV88, the quality difference is stark. The MV88 is studio quality, the iphone mic sounds poor. Be aware that you’re not going to hear much difference if listening to your recordings through the iphone speaker, but once you put on a decent pair of headphones the quality difference is obvious. The MV88 has a tiny bit of hiss when on full gain and recording quiet sounds, but way less than from just the iphone mic, and that’s completely to be expected and probably in-audible to many ears. Its only once you go up to more expensive mics / pre-amps etc… that you get the next stage of quality. The app is also very good. All in all – very happy.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe quality of sound reproduction is outstanding and the set up is very easy and intuitive. You can vary the angle of sound which the mic takes in, you can increase the mic volume a lot. There’s various equalisation sliders for those wanting to colour the recording. Used it on an ipad, it’s tiny and by far the most convenient method of doing a quick on the spot recording there is. There is absolutely no background noise when you crank it up and no distortion in replaying music recorded which has large changes in dynamics. You can immediately divide a recording up into sections afterwards, and saving and sharing files is a doddle. You can fast forward and back with the slide of a finger on the screen. I am extremely fussy about sound and know how difficult it is to get a decent recording of classical piano, which is what I use it for; it’s really outstanding for this (although of course not the same as a thousand pound mic and recording desk!); even recording a string quartet from the back of the room gave really good sound. Thoroughly recommend

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHonesty was not expecting much from this. I was going to buy a separate mic and a mixer, but they were too pricey so I ended up with this thing. I use it for my drum set. Sounds are basically the same as my built-in mic, but it was really balanced. Under the built-in one, the ride cymbal would cover the ringing of the toms, making them sound like cardboards; Under this mic, they actually sound like drums. The mic gain is helpful as well, as I need to keep track of the inputs. One thing I adore is that in some magic ways, nearly all the snare buzzings are eliminated, whereas, through the built-in mic, they are as loud as my floor tom.
Do note that it would take some experiments to get the right gain at the right position, but who cares anyway lol!

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI love this mic. The design is solid and it allows me to capture great sound when I record audio or video. But… the mic I got had what sounded like a short in the recordings… a loud pop followed by a serious of less loud pops. The signal was not peaking either. It was past my return deadline for Amazon so I contacted Shure and they were great about replacing it quickly. They accidentally sent me 2 replacement mics and I’m glad they did. one of the replacement mics had the same problem as the mic I sent them. One did not. I kept the one that worked well and sent back the other one. Once again, I love this mic but if 2 out of 3 of the mics I tried had issues, then that represents a serious problem in manufacturing. I hope Shure handles this issue. I generally like and recommend this brand.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersVery nice, feels well built and produces much better sound than the iPhone 7 internal mic. Does it produce excellent sound like a larger Rode? Well, no but then you can’t expect it to when you compare sizes. It is fairly easy to use with the Shure app installed on your phone but do remember to turn your phone onto airplane mode or you will get cellular signal noise on each and every sound recording you make. I use it with iMovie or just record sound using the iPhone native sound app – it’s dead easy to export recordings into iMovie when you’re done. I did read in other reviews about some compatibility issues with third party apps but I don’t use them so can’t comment.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersAstounding sound from any mic especially a lightning mic. I used this mic to record our large church choir’s and orchestra’s Christmas cantata and the results were truly impressive. I am an audiophile and I know when music is properly recorded. This mic performs perfectly on my iPhone 6s+. I set the mic and iPhone up using Shure’s Motiv app and then record in either the Rode Rec or Alon app. Once you select the microphone settings in Motiv those settings are stored internally in the iPhones audio circuits and are used by any app you subsequently record in. That is very nice. The purpose in using the MV88 in this way is that it avails you of the added greater recording flexibility that Rode Rec and Alon offers in addition to what Motiv gives you. By the way all this information was given to me by a Shure tech rep and confirmed by me in use.. The principal advantage in this approach is that it allows you to bypass Motiv’s limited mic gain when recording low volume sound among other things. I then edit recordings in Audacity for amazing results.
As others have said plug in the MV88 last after headphones since the iPhone recognizes as active what was plugged in last. Some have also mentioned that twisting the capsule clockwise or counter-clockwise is very hard. Go ahead and twist, per the manual, it is a very solid mic.

Golden Review Award: 362 From Our UsersWow – there is a huge difference in the performance of this microphone versus the stock iPhone mic. As a matter of fact, this mic is so good I’ve actually recorded two radio commercials on it in my studio and no one could tell I wasn’t using my standard EV RE320. You will need the free app to use it as an audio only recorder, but it automatically picks up this Mike with the phone’s video app and uses it if it’s plugged in. The free app is really nice, complete with level meters and its own Library System. Noise level is noticeably different when using this microphone. Although the iPhone picks up more sound, it also introduces a whole lot more noise. And what’s really surprising is the bass pickup for such a small microphone. You’ll have to hear it to believe it. I had a hard time choosing between this unit in a separate digital recorder, but I figured this made more sense since I always have my phone with me. Now all I have to do is remember to throw this unit in the glove compartment.

I like the fact that you can use it while recording video. The only reason that it didn’t get 5 stars is the fact that your battery will deplete from full to nothing in 75mins (iPhone 6s, whilst using video). Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersI must have bought and returned at least 4 mic in the price range of $90 to $150.
I use this mic to record instrumental playing from less than 1 foot away. Although I am still in the testing stage but so far I am happy with it. App is easy to use. It’s a plug and use . No instruction needed. It doesn’t pick up unwanted noise when recording at close-up. What impressed me the most is that you can listen to your recording without pulling the mic out . Less frequent of pulling and inserting the mic to your device means less chance of breaking the charger. It’s very well built with little plastic which is uncommon in today’s product.
    Why four stars only?
    1) Just as other reviews say , this mic can only tilt ONE WAY . You would have to pull and turn it to get the angle you need.
    2) The form ball that comes with the mic doesn’t really fit inside the case. It made a dent to the form
    3) you can not use this with a Ipad or Iphone cover on unless your cover is completely open at the bottom.

This is an excellent product for improving the sound recorded via an iPhone device. You do need to download a free app to go with it, but once downloaded the device is essentially plug and play.

One note – when I was doing YouTube live video streaming with the iPhone 5s, we did find that we had to turn the phone off and back on to get the mic to activate. I am not sure if that was an issue with the mic and the streaming software … or what the issue was.

For shooting videos, recording voice or any other purpose, once you have the associated Shure app, you literally plug it in and record.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersAudio quality is insane compared to what you’d get on your phone by default. There’s less static, and yeah.

The price feels kind of high. There’s no cord to convert it to USB, and no extension cable/ability to hook this up somewhere else. There might be a way with third party cables, but it’d be cool if they included something at the price it’s at.

I don’t regret buying this. I enjoy using it, and people notice the difference. I’m looking at some of their other products (the XLR thing?), but I’m not familiar enough with audio to make that much of an investment. But the Shure line of iOS stuff is definitely worth checking out.

I’ve used it to record small concerts, presentations, and one-on-one talks. The resulting audio is pleasing to listen to and noticeably better than the built in mic on the 6s+.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersI’ve used it several times to record big band rehearsals and it has been terrific. The big advantage is the MOTIV recording app which makes this mic really shine. The presets are very helpful and I’ve been able to record 2 hours on one file. For my purposes I convert the native WAV files to compressed versions to quickly upload. Shure made exporting easy with interfaces to most clouds (Dropbox, etc.) a snap, something I cannot say for other recording apps which make uploading a miserable, time-consuming experience.

Other less expensive external iPhone mics from Tascam and Blue left me disappointed with the results so the first time I listened to the recording from the MV88 recorded with the MOTIV app I was thrilled. I used the DSP preset for Loud which sets the polar pattern at the widest setting, lowers the input gain and adds moderate compression. The full range was evident from good solid, but not booming, bass to the upper harmonics from brass and saxes. It was the equal to recordings I’ve done with two AKG 414 mics in a coincident pair setup.

I’ve videotaped an entire two hour concert on my iPhone with this same set up I just described and the results were terrific, as well! Of course the iPhone’s 1080 P video format is well respected, so the addition of the Shure MV88’s high quality sound made an altogether excellent live recording. I expect equally great results recording other musical styles, such as solo piano, chamber music, solo vocal and choral, orchestra, concert band, etc.

For anyone involved in music it’s a must-have tool for accurate audio recording on the iPhone.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI bought this product primarily for broadcasting on Periscope from my phone. I broadcast speaking as well as live shows, so I’m hoping for much better quality audio for my broadcasts. I *think* it’s going to be great based on the audio demo I got visiting a Shure booth at an exhibit recently. Super excited about it. I felt it was my duty to let everyone in on a major flaw in the design. The plug piece that goes into the lightning jack is very short. I have three different cases and it would not plug in with any of them. This is especially bad for me, because I use a product called an olloclip (wide angle and zoom lens) for all my broadcasts – the olloclip comes with a phone case that the lens slips into. I have to be able to use both simultaneously. You cannot use the product if your phone has a case UNLESS you buy an extension adapter for any additional $20 or so – I bought this extender http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KH08E1A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 I’m unsure at this time if this adapter causes any quality issues with this product. I’ll try to provide an update after I’ve had more time with it, but I had to share this info.

Golden Review Award: 135 From Our UsersIt’s about time someone made an iOS mic that ticks all the boxes. I’ve been tempted to buy other options, like the iXY, but it’s static construction (lack of rotation) made me shy away. A little background on me- I’m a former professional recording artist (Intangible) & am still an active home recording enthusiast/ producer/ musician. I purchased the MV88 about 3 weeks ago & LOVE it. I’m not going to get into details about what I like because every review already posted pretty much talks about the same things I would. Really the only complaint I have is that the software compressor and limiter add quite a bit of background noise, as if the gain were turned up 15 db. I think the best option is to use it in “flat mode” when recording and manipulate your audio recordings as needed in postproduction. As stated in previous reviews, the build & audio quality are top notch. The software is solid but could benefit from a bit of GUI tweaking to make it a bit more “intuitive”. For instance, the monitor function is in the “info” menu, which doesn’t really make sense. It should be accessible on the main (record) screen. I’m sure these sort of things will be addressed and changed on upcoming revisions of the software.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThis is a really versatile mic, although may be a bit much for a casual user. Anyone who appreciates recording live stereo at 24bit on their iPhone will likely appreciate this mic’s capabilities – and results.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersBeen using this pretty much daily since I got it a couple of weeks ago recording AP lectures for school, and I’ve also used it to record 2 concerts. It has done a great job at both. For AP lectures I use the Shure Motiv app on the Speech preset and record audio only, works great. To record the concerts I selected the Band preset in the Motive app and then recorded video with the built in iPhone video recorder, also works great. Whatever setting you choose last is what the mic uses even if the Motiv app isn’t being used, so it should work with pretty much any video recording app.
For AP lectures I don’t sit in the front row and my teacher will walk around as well but the clarity is still good. However, where this mic really impressed me was recording concerts. I had previously tried a Zoom iQ5 which got returned after 1 week. The Zoom was acceptable for lectures but not great. For concerts the Zoom was horrible, whenever the volume approached red it would very noticeably compress the signal and just crush the sound. The Shure doesn’t suffer from that problem at all. The concert audio was excellent even from the raw video recording, volume is great, and the LED indicator never flickered from green. Once I run the audio through some cleanup it will be amazing. Additionally, the build quality of the Shure is so much better than the Zoom, makes the Zoom look like a dollar toy….which sadly it’s not.
Hopefully this doesn’t get jacked by security at any of the upcoming concerts I’ll be going to, but if it does, I’ll definitely be getting another one.
