I recently purchase a large upright freezer for the garage. Although the existing centrally located tubelight was adequate for the garage it wasn’t illuminating the freezer contents very well. Wife not too happy. I wired some mains lighting cable to this fitting, easy as it has a connector block inside, and fitted a 13 amp plug with a 3 amp fuse. I screwed the fitting to the ceiling above the freezer door and clipped the cable neatly down to the socket outlet by the freezer. It works a treat. As soon as the kitchen door is opened into our garage new light comes on and stays on until you leave. The sensor is very accurate. The light goes out in 3 minutes after you have left. Wife is now very happy. The light is bright enough to light the whole garage and I’m going to get the other one installed in our understairs cupboard, but that will need an electrician to take in a supply. The light would be ideal in my opinion for an enclosed porch or outbuilding as well as a garage. Highly recommended. However there is no way that I could see to adjust the time on or the ambient light setting if you think you may need this.

Great quality, bright with a precise sensitive sensor and timer.

Easy to install and makes your life a lot better especially if you are having kids that always forget lights on. We are using them in bathrooms and the light is much more brighter than the usual light. Highly recommend

Perfect for our under stairs cupboard. Hard wired so always comes on when we open the door. Excellent lighting. I cannot comment on ease of fitting as this was done by an electrician as part of a wider rewriting of the house.

Really bright, quite a harsh light for an under stairs cupboard, expect the second to be good in the garage though

Sensitive and bright these work as they should. The odd shape is the puzzle to me. But I woudl suppose most people buy these kinds of lights for the function not the form – and on that score these are a very good buy.

Firstly I’d suggest having a good look at the photographs on the product’s page; what’s missing is (1) some detail about how the lights are fixed to wall or ceiling; and (2) there’s also a suggestion that wires need to be inserted into the terminals.

    1. The light is supplied with a hanger bar that can be screwed to a wall or ceiling, and the unit is then screwed to the bar using the supplied screw. Alternatively, the light can be fitted to an octagon mounting box (they fit flush with the wall or ceiling). The hangar bar is likely to be the easiest option, unless a mounting box is already present.

    2. The unit is already wired with about 170 mm long tails exiting from the back of the unit, The wires are black (live), and white (neutral). No earth is required as this is a class II double insulated unit. The unit has an IP43 rating, so it can be used outside, but must not be exposed to rain etc.

Size-wise the light is approximately 175 mm long, 130 mm diameter and 60 mm deep. The light source is 95 mm diameter.

Whatever mounting is used, the wiring is designed to go through the wall or ceiling. Should one want the cable to run on the outside of the wall or ceiling a little ingenuity will be required as there is no provision made for the wires to exit through the sides of the wall plate. Depending on location, I can see no problems with getting a power supply to the light for a competent DIY person; failing that you’ll need to get an electrician in.

The light is very good, the PIR sensor works well and after activation the light stays on for about 3 minutes, unless re-triggered. I think this is far too long and really an adjustable time would have been ideal.

Apart from mounting and powering the light I think the main issue is that these light are so utilitarian and have little aesthetic appeal. Garage, shed, cupboard? Yes! Living spaces? No!

Have another look at the photographs!

This light is definitely bright and strong. Sensor detects movement without problems. It maybe doesnt look so pretty but as long as it works. It requires additional wiring to work and connection to main energy supply.
I wonder why this light stays on for that long- it’s like 3 minutes.. a bit to long. It wastes energy when we need it for few seconds and it still stays on for 4 minutes. I will be happy with this light if it’s on only when movement is detected.

Good strong light but stays on for to long

These motion sensor lights by Umi – an Amazon brand – are not the prettiest lights you’ll find in the market place, but they are more than adequate for purpose. They’re unsuitable for outdoor use, and need to be wired in to mains electricity, which may be somewhat off-putting for some potential users, but armed with that knoweldge, any customer should be able to make an informed choice. I gifted them to a friend, who has recently moved into a house with a garage, and he fitted one of the lights there, and is pleased with the lights motion sensor capability and the illumination offered.

My main criticism is that the lights are functional rather than aesthetic in their design. There again, they’re not an ornament or a piece of furniture – you’re not going to spend hours looking at them! The other point to bear in mind that there is a lot of choice for lights such as these, and there may well be others that look better and competitively priced.

These lights perform as expected, despite looking a little quirky. They provide a bright light and the sensor works well,.making them handy for an entrance porch, hallway or garage.. Unfortunately, they do not have an IP rating, so they cannot be used outside, which is a little disappointing. Also, they need wiring in rather than being battery operated. Overall, a decent light.

I received this item through the Amazon Vine programme. This is a pair of mains operated motion sensor lights, each giving out roughly the equivalent of an old fashioned 60w bulb. They are for interior use only and are not weather resistant. They are of a utilitarian, white plastic appearance: I did not find them unattractive personally, but they certainly aren’t (and aren’t intended to be..) a “feature” light.
One drawback is that they are made for wiring flush, that is to say wiring to wires that are coming out of a hole in the wall or ceiling, rather than surface wiring. The colour of the wires fitted do not correspond to European standard colour coding: the black wire is the live and the white wire is the neutral.
The light will come apart of you remove the two screws at the front, allowing you to mount the base-plate easily before putting the main body of the light in place.
All that being said, if you are a bit handy you can remove the supplied wiring and connect your own cable, put a couple of thick washers behind the mounting screws and surface wire them anyway, which is what I did.
A point of concern is that there is no wire lock or grip as a safety feature. I used a large blob of glue from a hot-glue gun to suffice.
The lights function well, detecting motion and remaining illuminated for about two and a half to three minutes. I put one in my garage (standard size) at the end where the freezer is, it saves the wait for the ancient fluorescents to flicker while they decide if they are going to come on or not. One light is sufficient to light half a garage well enough to see what you are doing. They’d be really bright in an under stair cupboard for example.
Once I’d got these lights up I liked them, they are effective and do what they claim. Currently retailing at 29:99 for the pair, they are about average price for mains lights. If you are only illuminating an under stair cupboard, do you need a mains light? Maybe not.
I do think you need to be a bit “handy” to install these: you certainly don’t have to be an electrician , but you will need to connect wires and be able to work around problems you may encounter.

These twin pack of lights are really solid and well made, and they give out more than enough light to be very useful in a number of different rooms in your house. They arrive packed nicely in a compact box along with some mounting brackets and the instructions.

Installation is fairly straightforward, and you can remove the rear plate for easy marking on the wall if you choose to mount it this way although the quick connect mount is nice and simple to install as well. Connect the wires (white & black strangely) and away you go. The sensor has a good detection range and the light comes on for about 3 minutes when activated. For how compact it is the light gives out is very bright and even, easily enough to light a small room.

Overall, I think even though they look a bit cheap, they are surprisingly very well made and solid. None of the plastics parts are cheap and flexible and the front lens feels thick and strong, enough that it could probably take a moderate hit from a football without breaking. Quality doesn’t seem to an issue here which is great. I feel they are worth the current price of 29.99, I’ve had no issues with them, and I’m pleased with the amount of light they give out therefore I’m happy to recommend this item!

    High quality, bright sensor ligh

I purchased these lights specifically to go in my under stairs cupboards as I’m in and out all the times and the light switch is outside in the wall and it’s a bit of a faff, and I’m forever forgetting to switch the light off. So these lights are the ideal low energy solution for me, as they don’t need to look pretty (good job!), just be functional; so I’ve replaced the standard ceiling light fitting with these. They are a bit fiddly to fit as others have mentioned, and you need to be careful with the wiring colours, but once up they work well. I think these would be a bit too big for a wardrobe personally, unless you have a BIG walk-in cupboard, if not then I suggest you buy one of the other myriad rechargeable LED wardrobe light out there.

I think for what it is and it’s styling that it’s a tad overpriced, even for two, though it does however do the job well enough.

Because I don’t know the first thing about wiring I would have to get an electrician in to setup the lights or a family/friend that could do it for me. The lights are made of a thick and durable plastic to which I’m sure would last many years to come. I am disappointed because I thought I could put in the cloakroom and wardrobe but it’s not so easy. The appearance of the lights are basic and I don’t have a problem with that, for me it was more about providing light without the use of a switch.

These lights are crisp and bright. Two mounted in a single car garage give more than enough light to work by.

The PIR sensor picks up the smallest movement, which saves waving arms if it goes out before you’ve finished in the garage (or wherever you’re using them). The sensor range is influenced by the mounting height, but it is a perfect circle so it gives a reliable, consistent beam.

The moulded/sealed units prevent dust build-up, a real bonus compared with ordinary fluorescent strip light. However, they’re not IP rated, so you need to make sure they’re clear of water.

    A few areas for improvement:
-You could use them in living areas of the house, but they don’t look very elegant- best confined to the garage, shed, under the stairs, etc
-Although they look like battery items, they need to be mains-wired; they come with very short wires, which makes installation harder, and limits choice of location/ease of re-location. NB the wires aren’t UK normal standard colours, so use caution when installing.
-When installing, you need to take care with mounting plates, as there isn’t the template you’d normally get with lights like this

Robust lights, quite large for motion sensor lights described as suitable for closets.
They are mains powered, come with clear comprehensive instructions and in sturdy packaging.
Obviously designed more with practical application in mind than aesthetics they nevertheless have a cute roughly tear drop shape and would likely be good in walk in wardrobe spaces or storage rooms/attics.
Quite lightweight but feel reasonably durable.
I would not recommend for small closets due to their size and being mains powered.

Bright LED light, not the prettiest, but does the required job.
One gripe is there is no edge cutout so wires can be surface mounted.
This was designed to fit over buried cables coming through the roof or wall, not something a PIR extra light would ever be needed for. The wires are pre-installed in entirely the wrong colour configuration for anywhere in Europe! Why? Tip, in case re-installation might happen, add a piece of coloured insulation tape to the wires.

Oh a second grip, I have just discovered there is is no template for marking out the screw hole positions.
You cannot take this apart, so mark and drill through is not possible. Measure up for circular fixing is not reliable.
Tip: make your own paper template before using and mark the drill holes, otherwise a few millimetres out and it won’t fit.
