I upgraded to the 100 Masters from my 10 year on Sennheisers. Before my purchase, I went through tons of research and actual comparisons and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase especially for the price.
In the end, it was between these and the Pioneer X10s and the M-100s were substationally better. The x10s were all highs with no bass. Not my favourite at all and were much more expensive. I use headphones primarily for DJing and also for regular listening. The V Modas have a rich baseline but not over the top with crisp mids and highs. They’re honestly perfect and I can’t imagine anything better at this price range. Comfort is great but I do wear glasses and they do squeeze abit more than I like. If you don’t wear glasses then these are awesome in the comfort category. Get these and stop your search.
Nutshell, is that I have gone through several sets of headphones for my DJ gigs, but always balked at the price of the Vmoda. They work perfectly, have enough power and clarity that I can hear my mixes and previews even in the middle of a dance at full volume. I do a lot of school dances so I need to be able to hear and censor some songs live, other headsets just were not up to the task. With these, I can hear every word, every nuance of the music.
I gave it 5* for noise cancelling for that reason. Call it ‘passive noise cancelling’.
They’re comfortable enough that I can wear them all night, and flexible enough that I can pull one off my ears and rest it on my head to hear the house mix. Just about the only gripe I have with these, is that they require twist lock pins for the wiring, so if you lose your cord you’ll need to get a compatible cord or if you’re in a pinch may need to shave down an existing one to fit.
Brilliant sound quality, comfortable to use even for a long period, and it looks stunning.
Love
Sound Quality 5 star , Build Quality 5 star , Packaging 5 star
Hate
As someone who loves to mix , hours at a time , I find myself constantly adjusting them as they become uncomfortable over time and I imagine as they get worn they will become more uncomfortable.
Questioning
These headphones cost almost 400 Cad and don’t even come with a spare set of earphone pads. yet my Hyper x headphones which cost 3 times less came with a spare set. I think for that price that should have been a no brainer.
SEGUNDA OPININ:
I am a bass player, needed a pair of headphones to replace a pair of Shure’s that were less than 6 months old and already buzzing like crazy, buy cheap buy twice as they say. I spent a few hours researching and these Moda’s kept popping up as the best for bass players. I have neighbours to the left of me, neighbours to the right, I’m stuck in the middle so obviously volume is an issue. These Moda’s, whilst pricey are exceptional in my opinion and well, well worth the money. Mostly metal construction and unlike some other comments, I found them quite comfy. they sure seem built to last. Granted I’ve only had them for a couple of hours but I can tell you now, I had to adjust all settings on my amp and guitar to get that sweet Joe Dart sound I’m currently loving.
Bass is chunky without being muddy and doesn’t flood the mids and highs which are well represented.
Sound reproduction is accurate and really pleasing to my lugholes. I’m not into technicalities but they sound pretty awesome to me. They are a considered purchase but you get what you pay for and you get an exceptional pair of headphones. If you’re a bass player, can afford them and need to practice quietly, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these.
Utilizzo a 360 gradi.
NEXT…
Also die Musik Kopfhrer Suche geht weiter.
Beyerdynamic Custome One Pro: Hm.
Naja was solls… Gnnt man sich dann mal.
Und wow, was soll ich sagen… PERFEKT. Also fr meine Elektronische Musik einfach perfekt!
Wahnsinnig gute Qualitt.
My first pair of v-moda headphones was the m100 crossfade. They lasted five years before showing signs they needed to be replaced. So I bought the m100 master and so far they are just like the crossfade. Altough the first thing I noticed is these are super uncomfortable. Less comfortable than the crossfade. It’s not acceptable for V-moda to charge $250 and make the ear cups so unbearable. I am constantly adjusting these on my head to try and find a spot they don’t hurt my ears. They also aren’t deep enough, so your ears will most likely touch the inside of the ear cup. If you want to buy these, expect to pay more for the better ear pads.
This is a great product, I was a little hesitant buying them because 200 pounds its quite a lot of money for me but I’ve wanted a quality set of headphones for a while so I treated myself. As soon as I looked at the box I felt like I was looking at quality, beautiful packaging and it comes with a 2 year warrantee from the manufacturer if you sign up for it on the V-MODA website. I was a little worried that I wouldn’t get this because I didn’t order it from their website but was pleasantly surprised to find that I do. The sound is great, they are very sturdy. Would recommend to anyone considering this product.
Leute, der Sound is super!
Fantastic sound. Comfortable Have had Vmoda headphones before and quality is still the same top of the line
Consiglio a tutti
Amazing set of cans. People say these are for bass heads but I couldn’t disagree more. Yes they do have amazing bass but it’s not like having a 15″ sub in your trunk. Couldn’t be more pleased with this purchase. I do a lot of recording within my home studio and am an avid gamer as well. Noise isolation is decent with the stock pads but I HIGHLY recommend going with the replacement pads by AHG. Sound quality is really good. I’ve owned my fair share of cans from audio technical to senheisser and these hands down are by far my favorite. Whether I’m in the studio tracking ( I mix with my LP6s ) making beats, watching a movie or enjoying a gaming session, these headphones give me the immersion that the others were always lacking. The bass is spot on giving you a nice FULL sound whatever your doing without being to overpowering. The build quality….. honestly…… I have yet to own a pair of headphones that are as well built as these while still retaining comfort for the user. Solid solid SOLID construction. Great job V-Moda on an amazing set of cans!!! Highly Recommended for anyone that does studio work ( hip hop, edm, rock ) is in to gaming or anyone that just wants an amazing headphones with amazing build quality that will truly immerse you into whatever your doing with a rich full sound.
I have been using these headphones for over five months now and I love them! I used to have Klipsch Image One headphones and while the sound was great, the build quality and comfort left more to me desired. The Crossfade M-100 Master solves both of these issues and sound slightly better than the Image One.
The Image One was made of plastic and my most recent pair broke twice in two different spots around where the earcups meet the headband (I glued them back together the first time this happened). I take meticulous care of my things and it isn’t like they broke because I sat on them or something like that. The Crossfade M-100 Master is made of metal in these areas and so I don’t expect these to ever break in the same way. Another problem with the Image One is that, once the cushions began deteriorating, I couldn’t find replacements from Klipsch. Not only did they look unsightly, but I would find small pieces of the cushion in my hair! I can purchase new cushions easily from V-MODA’s website for $15! The last issue I had with the Image One in terms of build quality is that the cable could not be disconnected from the headphones. Once the cable began falling apart, I essentially needed to replace the headphones entirely. With the Crossfade M-100 Master, not only is the cable seemingly much stronger, but it is also removable. If it fails in the future, again I can go on V-MODA’s website and purchase a variety of new cables in a variety of different colors. Their cables also only connect to one earcup, instead of both like the Image One. This makes the Crossfade M-100 Master less restrictive since I don’t have a cable dangling under my chin like a chin strap to a helmet. I expect these headphones will last me an exceptionally long time!
The final issue I had with the Image One was with comfort. If I had them on for more than two hours, my ears would start to hurt. I would need to take them off to give my ears a break. The first few times I wore the Crossfade M-100 Master I experienced slight discomfort after extended listening sessions, but that issue quickly disappeared. Perhaps the headband loosened up a bit with use? I have since enjoyed many months of extended listening sessions with zero discomfort!
You do pay more money for this increase in build quality and comfort, but for how much I use these for TV shows, YouTube videos, and video games the investment is well worth it for me.
I’ve bought these headphones for Dj-ing purposes, which I’m quite satisfied with. It’s not an audiophile pair of headphones, but the sound what you get is excellent! For me, the bass is bit too harsh, which fades a bit the mids a bit, but for Dj-ing it’s perfect!
These headphones are amazing! Best headphones I’ve ever had!! Very comfortable and brilliant sound quality
I have these and Sennheiser Momentum 2. They sound almost the same, but V-MODA Crossfade M-100 one has bit more (low low end) bass, but at the same time, the Sennheiser Momentum 2 has a bit better high end. If I picked either headphones at random, I probably wouldn’t notice the difference without listening very carefully. To summarize, both headphones are almost unnoticeably better than each other, V-MODA Crossfade M-100 with better bass and Sennheiser Momentum 2 with better highs. For me, bass is life, so V-MODA Crossfade M-100 is my choice.
Insgesamt also ein warmer Klang.
We have a lot of headphones in this family because we listen to a lot of different material – movies, gaming, conference calls, rock, jazz, classical and, of course, EDM. I have been looking for a good EDM headphone for years including owning a couple of Ultrasones and a Vmoda M80 on-ear.
This Vmoda M100 Master is it! Beyond the bass, it provides that inexplicable energy that you want to hear from EDM.
The Beyerdynamic, AKG, and Sennheiser headsets in our stable have other uses and I still have not obtained the “endgame” headphone. But I will have to look no further when listening to electronic music.
BTW – the Vmoda site is great about providing replacement earpads and cables for older gear and for customizing options.
Vielen Dank
Sound is great as is the built quality. Noise isolation in my view is good, maybe not as great as Bose QC35, but still good enough. My only complaint is that the standard cushions are not very comfortable at the beginning. Within 20-30 minutes of use, I would feel a discomfort. They gradually molded around the shape of my head and I can now use the headphones at hours at a time. V-Moda also makes extra large cushions which I intent to try out.
Overall, after 1 month of ownership and almost daily use, I am very satisfied with the headphones.
Well built headphones! they seem they’ll last for a long time. They look nice like some kind of lambos headphones.
Sound quality is very good but in some kinds of music it isn’t. Still I would recommend them as they are actually worth it.
Stra consigliate. Spedizione Amazon super ok.
I always wanted a pair of m100’s but opted for this because it is advertised as Hi res – which usually implies it can hear lows and highs up to 40,000 khz. I was going to get the m-200’s but the difference is just neodymium magnets, which could make a huge difference, but this should do fine.
I think the headphones are extremely sturdy. The masters have ear cups with holes in them for air, I guess. The sound is fine, but “s’s” are rather sharp and treble could be a bit too tough; which is fine. I use an external DAC and amp anyway. I’m hoping that the sharp trebles disappear after burning the headphones in. If the treble pain goes away, I’ll come back and edit my review and scoring.
Oh yeah, the amazon sold V moda’s? I could not register my product on Vmoda’s website. A technician told me to just hold onto the receipt and everything will be fine.. makes me feel a bit off that the serial numbers don’t register for amazon purchased v moda products.
I’m an audiophile. I have scores of headphones from cheap “came with the thing” earbuds to massively expensive Bose sets.
These are without any shadow of a doubt the best bang-for the buck headphones I’ve ever owned.
– the sound quality is AMAZING. Absolutely on par with Bose
– they are incredibly comfortable – they stay firmly in place but don’t at all grip your head like a vice
– they are built to last. Many metal parts vs. the plastic build of headphones twice the price
– they fold up into a very small but extremely durable carrying case (which I leave clipped to my backpack so I can have these wherever I go)
I’d honestly give them 6 stars if that was an option. There’s nothing at all I would improve on.
It is a very well built headphone. Sound quality is pretty decent. I have run it for about 40-50 hours ish, bass, treble and mids are pretty balanced. Bass and treble are a bit more than mids but not too over. The only thing I don’t like about the sound is high-mids are too soft, female vocal sounds very far away and weak. It isn’t that comfortable to have it on for hours. The headphone passed on the top of my head so hard, and it’s a little bit pressing on my ears… It would be a good headphone for gaming, movie, and music expect for classic and female vocal song. Btw, drum solo with this headphone is fantastic.
I can’t explain it but I love these headphones, and I have a few of them. These are closed-back and fit very well on my head. I have a medium sized head and they fit over my ears fine. They are very comfortable and light. I use all my headphones but I am drawn to these phones quite often probably because these sound amazing. When I use these I often use the ES100 dac. If you know anything about this dac it is a small pocket portable size dac and this dac sounds incredible for it’s size. I also use other headphones on this dac but the Cross-fade M 100 is my go to headphone for this particular dac. There are other dacs that I have, more expensive dacs that I use and I have use these phones on all of these dacs and the sound quality is a lot better but still produce the same result on these phones which is clear, clean, and bright sounding music.

Geniales.
As a former musician and audiophile, I’ve tried many headphones over the years. When testing the Crossfade M-100 I went back and forth between this headphone and my Sennheiser HD 660S and AKG N700 NCM2. The first thing that jumps out when I started listening is the warm sound, and I love it. The bass is full but it’s not overdone. I can plug this into just about any audio source and enjoy listening without having to mess with the EQ on the device. When I switched to the Sennheiser HD 660S, that one sounds lacking in the low end frequencies and so it’s not nearly as fun for everyday listening (but rather, for “reference” when a totally flat response curve is desired). This Crossfade M-100 seems to have a clearer sound with lots of 3D depth when there are many frequencies performing at the same time (bass, mids, highs of varied instruments all kicking in at the same time), whereas the Sennheiser HD 660S sounded one dimensional in the same part of the music (due to lack of exposing the low end color). The AKG N700 NCM2 is also wonderful, with a similar sound to the Crossfade M-100 when I tweak it’s EQ using the iPhone app, and I use that one when I need a wireless connection via bluetooth.
I got a pair of these for portable use in noisy places. I had the Sennheiser Momentum on-ear headphones and the Sennheiser Amperior headphones. I also have the NAD VISO M50. These are all excellent. In the summer, I’ll wear the Sennheisers since they are cooler, being on-ear, and in winter, I will wear the V-Moda or the NAD, since they are warmer, being over-ear types.
All of them are plenty efficient enough to be powered very well by any portable source without needing an extra amp.
All of them will be comfortable, lthough, for the V-Moda, if your ears are large, the available ($20.00) XL ear pads from V-Moda will be absolutely necessary. The Amperior and V-Moda will be stable and stay in place on the head for very vigorous activity. The Sennheiser Momentum, and the NAD VISO, are stable on the head for moderate activity levels.
They all offer terrific sound quality with wonderful deep bass, and great midranges and trebles.
To differentiate between the NAD and the V-Moda, as they are both over-ear with similar closed can sonics, The V-Moda has slightly better details in the highs, and a bit more laid back mids than the NAD. They both have excellent bass that is well balanced and extends as low as you can hear, tight, flat, and with low distortion and no bloat. In both, the frequency response follows the Harmon curve closely, which means, they carry a good amount of weight in the lows, a natural sounding midrange, and nicely balanced brilliance in the highs. Either pair work well in imaging, and instrument separation and placement in the sound field. The V-Moda has a slightly smaller sound stage…very slightly, but more than makes up for that by the great detail and resolution it can produce in the image. If I were forced to pick one of these two headphones as the only ones I have, it would be a hard pick, since they are both so good. If I were able to EQ the NAD VISO M50 up 3dB in the top octave (over 10Khz) it could be my choice. Straight from any source, the V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Master is my pick, for sound, and style. It is better looking for public use, without sacrificing comfort or build quality, and has the edge in comfort and stability.
Klare Empfehlung!
This is my “Big Boy” in the Media Room. This set gives you superior STUDIO QUALITY crystal clear sound. This is my personal set that I don’t allow anyone else to use if that speaks for anything. I have to say that this oen leaves all of my others (I have many sets) sitting in the dust as far as quality goes and it has never given me a speck of trouble with anything, it has been nothing but perfection for me. So is the price justified? If you are looking for Ultra Premium Quality and reliability then yes it’s justified. I wasn’t real convinced when it first arrived but that first use showed me the difference between mediocre sound and this great set. It’s comfortable to wear and easy to set up, just plug it in and go. As far as quality goes it’s a 5 star item but overall it’s a 4 star item.

If I were rich and didn’t have little kids, I’d be an audiophile. I’m not so I’m always on the lookout for the best sound under $500. I won’t be able to give you comparisons to truly excellent headphones or be able to tell your what they sound like through beautiful systems, but what I can tell you is if you’re listening to these through your laptop, they are the best sound you can get in this price range, and I’ve tested many many. They’re not quite professional studio quality, of which I’ve only sampled two, but they’re close. The detail is great without being too bright and the lows aren’t distorted. The one drawback for me is that they’re not the most comfortable to wear all day. I’ll take that in exchange for this level of sound quality, though. If you’re tight on funds but love good sound, get these.
Compared to some of my favorite studio headphones over the years these compare quite favorably.
The sound quality is very good. Not the absolute best I have heard but for the price they are comparatively great sounding. I do like the compacting folding design. The nice protective storage case. The quality cords and jacks. I find the metal frame and brackets a little hard around the edges and can catch your hair in them at times. They do fit a little tight and are good for a few hours at most for me. Still, I would rank them in my top 5 of all time. If your a V-Moda follower or new to them, they do have a large fan base and following. I can see and hear why. Excellent quality.
I now have purchased 3 V-Moda Crossfade headphones, Both pair with extraordinary clarity. Also, the ability to use the split plug-in dual end cable, allows two people to listen the output at the same time.
I highly recommend the Crossfade OVER-EAR headphones. You can trust V-Moda’s high quality sound reproduction which allows the listener to distinguish all the aspects of the source recording.
I got these for my dad to try because he loves listening to headphones. He doesn’t care for ear buds only over the ear ear phones. I tested then myself. The noise cancellation is fantastic. The music sounds great. Although they’re are si many things you can use these for (such as recording music/singing) For the basic music lover like us every genre of music sounds amazing. You can hear every instrument clearly. It comes with a great case to carry them in so if you drop it it won’t break. It comes with 2 wires one with a mic the other liner and fabric to use listen on a computer and or tablet. These head phones are worth every cent!
The Crossfade M-100 Master is far different than the high quality headphones I am used to wearing. I love music and simply cannot get enough of it and what to experience songs at the purest quality.
I’m familiar with brands such as Audio Technica and usually the ATH-M50X is my go to. The Crossfade I have found out creates an extremely enjoyable pair of headphones to appreciate and or create music with, but in certain situations I find them to be somewhat lackluster.
One of the first things I noticed about these headphones are they’re small and heavy. Unfortunately I have been blessed with a big head so these things are noticeable to me, around 4 to 5 hours of use I begin to feel discomfort.
Aesthetically these headphones are amazing and deliver an extremely sleek design. Sound quality wise these headphones are on par with other headphones within their price-range. I noticed one area in which these headphones stand out is bass oriented songs. Hip hop is the main genre I listen to and everything sounds notably different than other headphones.
Whenever a new album comes out these are typically my go-to headphones, any activity beyond a few hours I’ll usually resort to another pair of headphones.
Overall, if your head is smaller these headphones would be perfect for all activities, if your head is on the larger side, I would look into other options. Quality wise, as I had mentioned before, these headphones are amazing and perform perfectly in studio environments.
Wow they are an awesome headphones, it was looking between Senheisser Momentun, Bose, and Sony, the problem with Bose it the sound que his ANC, it change the soung when we have the ANC off, and after few days i really love this headphones!!! they are warm but clear, they are analitycal but same time warm and enjoyable
I’m not sure if the perfect headphones exist, however these are pretty close. Let me say right off the bat that I am not an audiophile or a sound engineer, so others may have a different opinion. My opinion is coming from your average music listener. I do have a bit of a headphone problem, constantly buying different types in search of the perfect pair, I do have some noise canceling wireless headphones that I’m really happy with. These are wired, so I only use them at my computer for gaming or music while working. I have to say that the clarity of sound through these is pretty amazing and the whole range is represented well, good bass, mids, and treble. I sought out some audiophile test tracks to really put them through their paces and they did not disappoint. Construction is also really great, high quality materials, very comfortable. So yeah, they’re perfect for me, until I find a better pair. 🙂
I am not a gamer but am a former showroom sound engineer and still love playing with audio gear. I am over 50, however, and therefore can’t claim that my hearing is what it used to be. So I enlisted the help of a 16 year with great hearing and a love of music to help with this review.
First, the M-100’s are super comfortable and very musical. They have a pleasing sound and the over-ear design keeps them comfortable for hours. From all appearances, this is a premium product, and the build quality is great. They come with a nice case, two cables, and fold up nicely. I’m not going to focus on these details, however, as the big question is “how do they sound”?
We compared these headphones to a sound system with JBL 4313 studio control room monitors, as well as a pair of Oppo PM-3 closed-back planar magnetic headphones (over the ear, a comparable design), and a pair of Phiaton MS 400 carbon fiber headphones that are described as over-ear but are really on-ear. We used a
Behringer Control 1 headphone amplifier to match levels when doing comparisons. Pricing for the various headphones was Crossfade at the lower end, Phiaton in the middle, and Oppo at the top, although the price difference from top to bottom (when the Oppo was available) was about $150.00.
We started with comparing the headphones to the speakers (we both liked the speakers better), but moved on to headphone comparisons. All sounded good, although the Phiaton dropped out of the running quickly. The on-ear design was less comfortable and it was hard for us to compare that. So, when comparing the Oppo with the Crossfades, the accuracy of the Oppo showed up better. When listening to the bass guitar on Toto’s “I Will Remember”, you could hear the individual notes and the attack on the string; with the Crossfade it sounded like a synthesizer with no attack on the notes. Similarly, you could pick out individual instruments much better on the Oppo; the Crossfade was pleasing but a little muddy and lacked detail.
In an objective test, with 16 year old ears, Matt liked the Crossfades better. To my trained ear, I liked the Oppo. However, when we did A/B blind comparisons, the Oppo won every time. Keep in mind these (Oppo) are exceptional headphones and known for detail and accuracy. The Crossfades were no slouches; very comfortable and pleasing, and if you’re looking for a “musical” pair of headphones with some coloration and a little loss of detail, look no further. If you want accuracy, there are some excellent alternatives in this price range you might want to audition as well. These are good for the money, but a little more money can get you a lot more accuracy.
These Crossfade M-100 Master Over-Ear Headphones were actually recommended to me by a fellow audiophile. While I’m no expert, I still love great quality sound, and I’m finicky about my headphones. I have a couple of sets of favs as far as wireless Bluetooth headphones go, but I haven’t really given more expensive, wired ones a big enough shot. When these came up for a chance to check them out and review them, I jumped at the chance.
And wow, I’m glad I did. The quality of the sound and the ranges of this set are amazing! Not only that, but you can REALLY hear ALL the details – whether you’re listening to music or using these for other things. There is a night and day difference from these to just about any other over the ear headphone set I’ve used before – and boy, have I used a TON of them! Everything is crisp and clear – like turning up a dial of pure clarity, for lack of a better term.
Listening to any kind of music – old or new – is a treat while using these, thanks to the incredible sound quality. Wow. WOW. Wow!
Not only that, but the ear cushions are well-crafted and very comfortable, even when you are wearing them for hours on end. Not that I’ve been doing that ever since I put these on or anything….;)
I’m going to have to rank these as my new fav now – if not my all-time favorites, then a very close contender with another $300+ pair of incredible wireless Bluetooth headphones that I own that I can’t get enough of…and that’s pretty hard to do. I thought I would be annoyed with these being wired…but it’s not all that bad…I’m just spoiled a little. That said, the quality more than makes up for that in spades, and that says a lot coming from picky ol’ me.
Overall, this is just something where I can’t imagine someone not being impressed with these. Sound quality is exquisite, and I’m shocked that I can hear details in stuff I never knew was there before in some things I’ve been listening to recently, which just makes the experience that much cooler and more fascinating. These are just plain ol’ awesome – two thumbs up from me!
Nothing beats a pair of wired headphones. The sound and bass is quite nice. These fold up and store well. The cord is made of a clothe material, so they bend nicely without bunching up or getting tangled. All around solid design.
Bought these for music listening, gaming and DJing. Really impressed with the durability and sound quality. Only thing is I didn’t find these that comfortable out of the box despite having thicker cushions than the original m100s. So I got the xl cushions. I bought some custom shields for them with my dj name on them and those look great. I also bought a wireless adapter from btunes which I use with my phone. Overall really good. Bit over priced in my opinion, but its actually quality compared to beats. Overall would recommend.
These are fantastic over-the-ear headphones, especially for studio monitoring and mixing/mastering. I am an amateur producer and sound engineer that has been recording, mixing, and mastering tracks for 10 years or so, so I was happy to test out these new M-100 Master headphones.
Likes:
– Sound: frequency response curve. Sounds nice and flat with very low lows and high highs.
– Clarity. These put out remarkable separation and clarity which expose all the parts of your mix. Nothing can hide from these headphones, you hear it all. Thumping bass playing at the same time as some delicate upper mids does not mud or mix up the sound. You can still hear the different parts clearly even under high volumes.
– Comfortable. Lightweight and very nice cushions make extended wear no problem.
– Foldable into great included case. To protect your investment. The case even has optional air vents so they won’t get moldy if you store them after a sweaty show.
– Good isolation. These are pretty aggressive at isolating sound, cutting outside noise by a pretty large amount.
– Includes multiple cables.
– Compatible with smart phones (mic and button in cable).. in case you want to use the good headphones with your mobile.
– Value. Lower price than the predecessor yet these seem to be improved a bit. Now that Roland owns v-moda they’ve produced professional class headphones at a lower price. Roland has amazing sound tech so I’m glad to see these two companies join and work on the same headphones.
Dislikes:
– No complaints so far. These are a joy to use. Will update review if I hit any issues in the future.
Caveats:
– These are designed for monitoring. The bass is not boosted to make music sound “better” because audio engineers/ producers need a very plain, even response curve where the different frequencies (from low bass to high cymbals) all get the same amount of volume and clarity. Monitor speakers and headphones may sound “flat” or “plain” compared to consumer speakers and headphones. This is by design. As a listener, it allows you to hear music as the artists / producers intended. It may take some getting used to but IMO is the only way to listen to music.
Like the original M-100, it has a strong mid and low end and the highs feel warm. The lows appear to be cleaner and firm compared to the original M-100s. I’m definitely a guy who prefers tight lows and crisp highs with a moderate mid range, but these are still really enjoyable; especially when watching videos. The ear pads are really comfortable. As much as I love utilizing Bluetooth with the wireless headphones from V-MODA (I’m using an IPhone 8 Plus), it’s nice to enjoy an analog pair due to the reduced weight for comfort. Fans of the original M-100 will definitely enjoys the Master as well.
This has excellent, very flat sound quality, an easy way to fold up into an included case, and a couple of options for braided cables. One of the cable options adds a second jack so a friend can plug their earbuds (or headphones) into the same sound source. The sound detail on these is incredible – it really highlights the difference between poorly-mastered and carefully-crafted music. They are comfortable, too, though my ears tend to get hot after a while with full surround cans like these. The only negative is that there isn’t a wireless option. These are wired, period.
I use headphones daily; mostly listening to classical music with other genres sprinkled into the mix. The headphones I use most are a Sennheiser HD800S plugged into a Woo Audio WA2 OTL amp and a HiFiMan Ananda plugged into a Burson Audio HA160 amp. I also have a HiFiMan HE5se, a Sennheiser HD700 and a Sennheiser HD650. Until recently, I also had a Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Generation.
I recently had the opportunity to get a V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master headphone free in exchange for my review so I thought, why not? When I first opened the box I was surprised by how small the case is. It’s very compact and relatively light. Upon inspection of the headphone I found the build quality to be very good, materials used are good and the headphone looks very durable. This headphone is designed to be transported and it should hold up quite well.
I had never heard a V-MODA headphone before and wasn’t expecting much. After all, my everyday headphones cost many times more. I thought I’d listen to it for 15 to 20 minutes and stick it back into the box. Boy, was I wrong. Right out of the box the sound really impressed me. This is not a neutral headphone. The sound signature is slightly V shaped and biased toward the lower mid-range and bass frequencies which gives it a very robust and well-rounded sound without being muddy or boomy. It also has fairly good bass extension. The highs are also very good and have good clarity and sparkle. What impressed me was how airy the highs are for a closed back headphone. At times, even delicate. Very impressive. The center of the mid-range frequencies could be a little stronger but that would affect the overall tuning so maybe not a good idea. The soundstage isn’t as good as open back headphones but it’s good for a closed back headphone and quite acceptable. Sound isolation is about as good as it can be for a headphone without active noise cancellation. It’s very enjoyable to listen to for extended periods of time. My sound quality assessment was conducted using an iFi Micro-iDSD Black Label portable amp/DAC and a Burson Audio HA160 amp with Ustars AK4497 DAC playing FLAC and DSD files.
I’m not saying that the Crossfade M-100 Master sounds better than or as good as the HiFiMan Ananda or the Sennheiser HD800S. It doesn’t; but we’re talking about a different class of headphones. What I am saying is that spending $250 on the Crossfade M-100 Master will put you ahead of the game and you probably won’t find better sounding headphones for less than $500, let alone a portable headphone. I can honestly say that these are the best sounding portable headphones I’ve heard. Better than my Sennheiser PXC550 and easily better than the Bose QC 25 & 35. If you don’t need active noise cancellation, get the Crossfade M-100 Master. That’s my opinion, which is purely subjective. If at all possible, try before you buy.
Headphones like the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master and the HiFiMan HE5se are good examples of the 80/20 rule. You’ll pay 20% of the cost for 80% of the sound and 80% of the cost for the remaining 20% of the sound. The Ananda costs 4 times more than the Crossfade M-100 Master and the HD800S costs nearly 7 times more. By no means are they 4 and 7 times better sounding. They are incrementally better.
Your source and amplifier will affect sound quality. When I listened to the Crossfade M-100 Master using my Galaxy S10 cellphone, the sound was somewhat anemic and hollow. When I listened to the headphone with my Burson Audio HA160 amp, the sound quality was so improved that it sounded like a different headphone. A cellphone cannot do this headphone justice. If you must use this headphone with a cellphone you should use a portable DAC/amp for better sound quality. Especially if you’re listening to hi-res music. I connected my Galaxy S10 to a Fiio E17k Alpen 2 portable DAC/amp and the sound was much improved. Not as good as when connected to the Burson Audio HA160 but much better than the Galaxy S10 without the Fiio.
The only negatives I experienced with this headphone is that the stock ear cushions are small and they get warm after a while. I will try V-MODA’s XL ear cushions to see if there’s an improvement in comfort. I have not tried using the headphone to make/receive phone calls.
I give the V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Master 4 and a half stars, rounded up to 5.
UPDATED 8/26/19: I received the XL ear cushions a couple of days ago and have been using them since. They were fairly easy to install but the tricky part it the removal of the old cushions. I used a hard nylon pry tool for opening cell phones and other electronics to separate the old cushions from the ear cup housing. The new cushions are easy to snap into place but be mindful of it’s orientation in the ear cup. There is a top and bottom. The XL cushions are a real blessing for me because the comfort level of the Crossfade M-100 Master went way up. My ear fits into the XL cushions whereas the stock cushions sat partially on my ear. Over heating is not so much of a problem with the XL cup as long as I’m in a relatively cool environment. Sound quality is unchanged. I give the XL cushions 5 stars.
One other thing I should note and that is the sound quality when the Crossfade M-100 Master is used with a DAP. I listened to the headphone on my old AK70 and it sounded great. Almost as good as on my HA160 amp. I was quite surprised but I guess the AK70 has a better DAC than my cell phone and a lot more power. That means I can travel with my AK70 or AK300 DACs without the need for a portable headphone amp. Fantastic!
Upon opening the box, I could tell that these were pricey consumer-grade headphones from the look and feel of the materials used. Lots of metal, with smooth paint free of imperfections. Most non-metallic surfaces are wrapped in a delicately soft imitation leather material. Briefly describing the sound quality, I would call it crisp and clear with a wide range.
Putting these up against Sony’s WH-XB700 headphones, these provide notable clearer sound, which allows for more of the light details in music to come through. They can’t compare to the heavy bass of the WH-XB700, but that is what Sony designed those headphones for. That said, these provide good bass at levels the studio intended. Unless I’m looking to blast the bass, these are my top choice every time.
And for gaming, I have put these up against CORSAIR’s Void PRO. While the Void PRO has the advantage of digital USB connectivity for true surround playback, they once again cannot compete with the clarity of M-100. Paired with virtual surround sound software (I use Razer Surround), these outperform the Void PRO.
Overall, these are one of the clearest headsets I have used. They cost more than each of the headsets I compared them against, but they demonstrated their value by outperforming each in sound quality, for two very different applications. If this is what you’re looking for in a headset, I would definitely consider these in your search.
But that’s JustMe.
I can understand the difference between a cheap bluetooth headset and a wired one … but this one is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY above that … I could hear the music and not the surrounding people
let a few people from work try them and they were blown away with the audio quality
even has someone compare them to there beats that these sounded WAY better
I listen to a wide variety of music but so far this things are AWESOME
I got these for my daughter because my son and I already have another brand but they’re wireless. She’s always borrowing ours.
She’s been wearing these and loves them.
She also Just use them while she was mowing the grass. She said she could barely even hear the lawnmower. She said it’s great quality no crackling or anything like that. We already had an adapter to go with her iPhone XR.
Now, I don’t have to lose my mind when I get to the gym just to find out that I don’t have my headphones in my truck. She now has her own she can use.
I’ve had nearly every pair of headphones that V-MODA has made throughout the years. I started with the M80 (on ear) which introduced me to the V-MODA sound, which I fell in love with. As a hip hop aficianado the emphasis on the lower end without muddying up the mids and highs was really a remarkable accomplishment, especially in an on-ear model. I used them for a few years until the update (The XS) came out and then the original M100. Both headphones refined previous models and added a lot more features (hello cliq-fold hinges) while keeping with the sound signature that V-MODA had established as their house sound. The original M100 was truly a work of art and for anyone that desired a little bass w/ their headphone, it was definitely a go-to recommendation.
A few years has passed and the drivers in the M100s have evolved. There seems to be a much cleaner and balanced sound overall. The bass has been slightly reduced, but not enough for you to really notice without listening back to back with the original. It just seems like it’s faster and tighter, which adds to the texture and responsiveness of the headphone. The mids and highs are a touch smoother with more articulation as well. The sound stage seems to be the same to me. So it really is just an evolution of the M100 sound…just refined V-MODA goodness.
The only real downside to them is the fit…for me, the ear pads were too shallow and too narrow (even with the XL pads). So I was hoping that the Master version would fix that issue. They tried, and mostly got it right, but they are still a touch too narrow for prolonged use. I can listen for about an hour to an hour and a half before my ears need a break. If I could give 4.5 stars, that’s what I would rate the Masters.
I just wonder where V-MODA goes next given that Roland owns them completely. Are they even going to exist in 2020?
The original M-100’s are a great pair of headphones. The Masters are packaged in similar high quality fashion. You can tell V-Moda cares about their quality. These build upon the original M-100’s and increase the clarity. I quickly sampled a handful of 192kHz/24bit Hi-Def songs, everything from Jazz, Progressive Rock, Techno and more. Every song, had new life. Ran a drum set on my Roland TR-8S and a DJ set on my controller, I couldn’t believe the difference these cans make. I also noticed when DJing that they seem more flexible than the regular M-100’s. The bass is low and very punchy but not muddy. The highs are very crisp, but not harsh. They seem to have a very well-balanced frequency response. Very durable feeling, just like the original M-100’s. The newer pads are almost as thick as the XL pads, have a high-end feel and are comfortable enough to wear for prolonged amounts of time. I may not switch out of the pads to my XL ones, but time will tell. I am a professional DJ and music producer and will be using these all the time. Super happy with this purchase, now to get custom plates made for the sides.
