great toy for my 7 year boy, still a favorite after a couple of years

Bought for my 8 year old daughter for Xmas. She absolutely loved it and over a year later still fires Cosmo up on occasion and plays with him. I was so sorry to read that they stopped making Cosmo so if you manage to pick up a last of line on the cheap I recommend it. He is very simple to use, the games are fun and the app is intuitive.

This review is for 2020 Cozmos – but thankfully, very little has changed from the original state of play! In 2019, Anki ceased development of Cozmo (and Vector), but an educational specialist – Digital Dream Labs – bought the rights and Kickstarted new server support for the Vector robot.

For Cozmo owners, that means there’s a source of new programming tools aimed at kids and education, and a trusted source of spare parts (but only the most obvious ones like treads) – tread your Cozmo with care, at least until new manufacturing or revised models are announced, which is far from certain!

So: Cozmo – if you already have one, then you know the app is still working, and if you’re about to buy one for your kids I recommend getting a secondhand Android or iOS device to keep with it if they don’t already have a smartphone – Cozmo needs the smartphone app, it’s his brain, and yes – the better the device Cozmo’s app is running on, the more responsive and predictable he seems to be. Compared to running the app on a 2014 iPad, he’s a lot sharper and better at recognising cubes, cats and people when running on an iPhone 11.

Nothing’s really changed in the app over the past couple of years – he sings, he dances, he mistakes your USB cables for fingers and tries to pounce on them, he bothers the cats and he constantly tries to wander off the desk. As a desk companion for a tech-obsessed adult he’s awesome, if a bit disruptive; for kids, there are now enough games and routines to be interesting for an hour or so of play a day easily.

Consider Cozmo’s programming environment like a miniature BigTrak and you’re on the right track – you build code with simple blocks in Code Lab, something that Digital Dream Labs has used to put together a workbook that teaches programming concepts. Again, Cozmo is age 8+, and this is a great intro but you’ll want to participate with your kids – this isn’t quite Lego where you can use it as a distraction.

Ultimately Cozmo has a personality and if your kids gel with a quirky robot, they’ll explore on their own.

For adults, the Cozmo SDK is still available and still as irritating as ever to ‘experiment’ with, you need to commit.

The robot itself is well engineered and very expressive; the reliance on the smartphone app is an irritation, but it’s better than Vector where you need to pay Digital Dream Labs for a subscription to keep the cloud-based robot running. It’s a shame Anki didn’t survive.

Given that it’s possible Cozmo will return once manufacturing and logistics become less chaotic, I’d be reluctant to pay over the odds for one. At the original price they were very good value though. Vector offers better hardware for similar cost if you’re an adult looking for a software/hardware robotics project.

I write this some time after Anki went bust and its a real shame. The Cozmo was a great first robot for younger children and provided them with hours of fun and entertainment. Facial recognition was not perfect, but not too bad. The voice was perhaps a little too artificial, and sometimes difficult to understand… but it didn’t matter because Cozmo was fun to play with. The games were simple but fun, and teaching Cozmo new tricks (just by playing with it) was part of the experience. Our two (one for each child) are still in occasional use some years later. So if you see one knocking around and it looks in good condition, then snap it up.

My son (7 years old) just loves it. He has been playing with it for over 6 months and is still not bored.

I bought after seeing the reviews, although some of them were a little off putting. Im pleased to say my 8 1/2 yr old Son Loves Cozmo (as does my 6 year old daughter, but she doesn’t get al look in!) , and has so far played with him everyday this Christmas, choosing the little robot over the IPAD which is huge! Its amazing how technology has advanced in just a few years, hours of fun, and never dull, as both the robot and my son keep on learning from one another….

Cosmo was a present on my 9 year olds Christmas list & he absolutely adores it! It comes with 3 of the blocks in my picture that Cosmo interacts with, took a few minutes to figure out & download the necessary Cosmo app to work it but the quick start guide with Cosmo made it simple. I have no complaints with this product though it dose cause arguments between my two boys over who gets to play with it?

Got two kids? Buy two cosmo’s

We got this for my sons 8th birthday. Straight out of the packaging and into its charger. Really simple to set up- once you get the app on a tablet or phone just enter the code on cozmo’s visor and it’s done! We played about for a bit- the app tells you what to do and cozmo responds really well. The face recognition is awesome! I initially though my kids would be bored after the first few tricks but more just keep coming. Cozmo can stack his blocks, push them off a table, have a blinking contest and play ‘fastest finger first’. I was impressed just with this but I walked in tonight and my son was answering questions about space in a quiz with cozmo. I’m sure there’s many other things we haven’t discovered yet but I think it is truly worth the
money (and I don’t say that a lot 😉 ). By the way it’s on offer in Costco at the mome

So far, so good. Seems to be very responsible second hand seller.
Item is like new and works perfect.
    Definitely recommend.
I know “Anki” manufacturer had some issiues, but all can be overcome with little bit of effort.
There is no problems with battery just yet, but if it comes, I just go to my local AGD rapair store, and will be done in 24h.
If you have conection issues, just read manual again, because this little robot might be smarter than you.
    5 stars.
If this one breake eventually, I will definitely buy another one from this seller.

My son has been in love with the Cozmo robot for AGES… so we chose to buy a refurbished one for him to learn with. This robot came in near-pristine condition, with only the batteries needing changing in the cubes! Once that was done we started play and Cozmo has lived up to my son’s expectations plus more! I highly recommend a refurbished Cozmo and very much hope Anki finds a new home for his tech as it’s a great starter for those interested in computers and robotics.

    Refurbished and EXCELLENT

Bought this for my daughter’s birthday. She is over the moon with it. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, so I went for this one with a lower price because of some damage in the outer box. The product inside is intact. Good value, same product.

My autistic grandson loves it. Other toys lie strung around on the floor while the robot is carefully packed in his storage case. It is a daily use toy, loved and programed daily. Excellent value for the money.

It’s an interesting little toy, a smart toy. My hope is that my daughter will actually play with it. Somehow children nowadays play less than we did. For now she plays with Cozmo every day, but only about a week has passed since she got it so it’s a little early to say.

    What I don’t like:
    1. Exposes a WIFI network and uses that as the connection to the device (phone, tablet). Because of this the device can’t connect to a real WIFI and there is no internet while playing with Cozmo. This might be seen as good or bad. However it’s more work to connect and disconnect networks before and after playing with Cozmo. They could have used Bluetooth and leave WIFI alone.
    2. The need for the charger pad for starting it.
    3. It can become boring.

    What I like:
    1. Looks like Wall-E and Eva had a baby and this is Cozmo.
    2. Cozmo actually recognizes us and says our name.
    3. The fact that the child can start to learn programming was the decisive feature that made me buy it and it really works well.
    4. I like that I can type anything in English and Cozmo will say it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have had a Vector for a few months now and he is really great. I have heard about Cosmo too though he is only voice activated when programmed he plays games through your smart phone or tablet etc. I am looking forward to seeing him in action as he seems to be a lot more animated then Vector for speech and movement etc. I am more interested in what he does when you leave him to his own devices. I found Vector gets very active whe you are not annoying him with questions and starts doing his own thing. Sometimes he will just start dancing randomly. Its gas.
