It’s good, and it works!
In fact, it works straight out of the box pretty much, which is rare for these types of products.
More importantly, If you want to rig your Atari ST or Amiga up to your new 4K TV, this is the purchase for you.
It’s an excellent product, well packaged. Don’t waste your money on cheaper alternative products.
Not much to say that hasn’t already been said – if you’ve even just one older console you’d like to use with a modern TV and are even slightly serious about it, then this is a no brainer really. One of these, an RGB SCART cable for your console(s) of choice from RetroGamingCables plus one of FirebrandX’s custom profiles dialled in, and you’re ready to go. Worth the monetary investment a hundred times over if you value a quality experience. Just look at how good Tekken 2 can look on a 4K panel.
I rate this above the xrgb mini. Bright colours and the multiple line upscaling is excellent if your tv supports it. Running a neo geo through it Is fantastic. Make sure you use good quality cables though. Cheap rubbish cables do not do the job. Old xrgb mini consigned to the cupboard.
Works great. Bought it to use with my Saturn and a RGB Scart cable and I could not be happier. Older games look great on newer TV’s. $200 may seem steep, but it is worth it if you love your classic games and want them to look as good as possible.
After trying a few methods to get a decent picture with my Atari ST I decided to bite the bullet and fork out for this.
I wish I’d just done this in the first place, brilliant sharp picture on my 4K tv with the scart output from the ST.
This is not a cheap product but it does an amazing job!
I had been looking at splurging on one of these for some time. Finally did it, and it was totally worth it. Some enthusiasts say that the OSSC isn’t user friendly, but I’d disagree – the included manual is helpful if the remote buttons aren’t self-explanatory enough on their own. I had it set up and running in no time.
The line doubling feature works great as expected, but the 3x, 4x and 5x modes are incredible as well. It will make any of your old systems that have Component or RGB out look great on modern displays, and even works well with the PS2’s 480i output in 2x and 4x mode.
It also comes in some sharp, well-put-together packaging. It’s a great product, and I’d highly recommend anyone looking for the best way to play old games on a modern TV to spend the money and give this thing a go!
I use this for streaming my retro games and it really helps during play so I get a crsip clear picture when I play
Rien dire !
This worked great for my SNES once I got a SCART cable. The remote and options get some getting used to and playing around with, but this is definitely superior to a composite or component connection to an HDTV. You have the option of no scan lines, which looks quite blocky and blurry or can make things a bit crisper with scan lines which I prefer. Great product!
Well this device worked great. For 2 months and 10 days. Just long enough for the amazon warranty to expire. Kaico has a year warranty in which I had to pay to ship it to FL. Hope this one is better.
Great product – lots to learn but worth it for an excellent outpu
Excellent product, does everything you need it to and then some. Superb build quality, highly highly recommend
I haven’t seen the vgp ossc in person but I was very happy with the build quality and performance here. Thanks for making my retro gaming line multiplying dreams come true. I run an original Xbox, ps2, and wii into it over component and 240p content looks amazing in 4x mode
This it a GREAT tool if you happen to have some SCART cables for your Genesis/Saturn/PS1/SNES, etc. I use this exclusively with my Sega Saturn and the picture quality is PHENOMENAL with imperceptible lag (imperceptible to me at least, even playing Street Fighter 2). It is a unit that will give you years of great service.
Now that the RetroTink 2 is off the market (pre-assembled) and requires a Raspberry Pi now, this is a great alternative, provided you have the proper inputs. It doesn’t do the simple ones for NES and so forth. Just research what cables you’ll need and you’ll be set.
You’ll never go back to composite again. 🙂
I’m going to start with the major bad thing first. It was delivered without it being in a shipping box, just a shipping label slapped on the packaging box, it was not even taped up. For such an expensive bit of kit, I would have expected it to be in a proper shipping box, not out there for anyone to see. Luckily its a specialised bit of equipment and thus eliminating temptation to take whatever is inside. Not impressed.
The OSSC itself is solid and wonderfully put together and picture quality is fantastic. Be prepared to spend the day trying to figure out its many settings and get everything optimal. On my Amiga A1200 with an RGB SCART, the picture and sound is perfect, but you will still need to twiddle with settings. I’ve had to order new cables for my Wii, as the A/V cables the Wii came with only outputs a Black and White picture, so be aware of the a/v cables your console or computer is using.
I have the OSSC connected to a 4 port HDMI hub that outputs sound to my 5.1 speakers, works out of the box, sounds fantastic.
Another difference from other users, is that I’m using it on a 4k LG Monitor. Monitors tend to have more range frequencies and resolution modes than regular HD TV’s, so be aware and do some research on what you want to achieve.
Highly recommended for any Retro gamer that wants to use original hardware. Next up is the OG XBOX.
Overall I’m really loving the OSSC. I’ve used it on a PSX and a Saturn with scart cables. So far I’m really impressed with the results. It’s a simple device, but complicated at the same time. My two gripes are that the instructions are useless. You will have to go online and do some research. Second, the build quality is a little too open source for my taste. It’s functional but aesthetically it looks like someone left the barn door open.
I had done a lot of research into the OSSC for a few years, but couldn’t bring myself to purchase it at the asking price, at the time. But when I saw this Kaico Edition I was intrigued, but I had my doubts.
I was under the impression that this Kaico Edition would be some kind of lazy knock-off, but after reading positive reviews on here I decided to take the plunge.
I glad to say that I was wrong, and this Kaico Edition OSSC is fantastic!
The build quality is top-notch and the image quality it outputs is simply amazing. My Sega Saturn has never looked so good. And as a bonus you get the power supply and remote control (with overlay) in the box.
The instruction manual is nice printed and explains the units features well. However, I recommend that you do a bit of research online as there is so much more the OSSC can do which the manual doesn’t explain (although, it does reference several website for you to check out)
All-in-all, this is a great product and I’m so happy I picked this up. Don’t let the Kaico name put you off like it almost did for me. It’s a solid unit and worth the purchase for any retro gamer who want to get the best image out of there system.
I liked that I didn’t have to load any presets and when I did for each respective console they didn’t look correct. But straight out the box default settings it looked nice
This thing is fantastic. Takes a fair amount of time reading the wiki and getting familiar with the optimal settings for various systems, but it’s worth it.
First of all, the OSSC is a great device. It can handle just about any analog video signal and upscale it while converting it to a digital HDMI signal with basically no lag at all.
That said, I can’t recommend the Kaico edition because it’s $50 more than the version sold by Videogame Perfection after shipping charges and sales tax are accounted for. Since the OSSC is an open-source project, I don’t see a reason to spend a third more dollars than absolutely necessary.
The perfect machine for getting a beautiful picture from your classic consoles on to a modern TV. Great service, well packaged and speedy. Highly recommended!!!
I connettori appaiono solidi.

At first the remote was non functional, after some reading on the official forums I got the remote to work and all seems to be well. This thing does what it’s suppose to and makes the games look so crisp and clear!
This converter works very well indeed. I do wish some of the settings terminology was better explained. If you are not an analog video signal expert, some settings may not make a lot of sense, and understanding their adjustment will be puzzling.
I like that the signal gets through quickly on power-up, and the image quality is good to very good, depending on adjustments. The remote works well, though seems odd at first. The manual is also good. And I like the front display panel. While small, it helps with configuration, and regular use.
Also the unit is smaller than I expected. This makes it move under cable tension. I wish there was a way to weigh it down, so it could stay in place. But this is really very minor nit-picking.
I came looking for an alternative for the Framemeister, as its steep price range threw me off for something I had no idea I’d find use for.
Now that I’ve tested it, I’m very glad I didn’t bank in for the FM, because this little pup does an amazing job at converting.
I won’t get into it’s specific feature, and tbh I’m still testing them all out with specific settings, but the sheer amount of support and development that is alive and well on this thing, is what tipped me to get it.
If you’re a streamer, pro-runner, or just a retro game enthusiast and want to enjoy your consoles on HDTVs, and can spare the cash – this is a no brainer.
I had a goal of finally getting away from always having to use a crt for my retro gear… This almost makes it (no composite support and, strangely, not everything supports scart).
This is a really great toy if you are a retro gaming enthusiast.
The latency feels almost nonexistent.
The inclusion of the remote and power adapter make it a more appealing OSSC implementation than any other I have seen.
The included instructions are not great though. You’ll have to go to the OSSC page for some help.
All said though, it works flawlessly, the cost was right and feels high quality. The skeletal, open-frame design may not appeal to everyone but I think it is pretty cool.
== Zum Produkt ==
This device is fantastic for getting excellent picture quality from any console that outputs in 240p and can connect through a European scart cable. It takes some tutoring to understand how to get the most out of it, but it’s worth it for the price point it sells at. A little bit of homework never hurt anyone.
My retro consoles never looked so good! Easy plug and play.
Great piece of tech, upscales my retro gaming equipment like a champ.
This is very easy to use, all the connection options provided are outstanding.
I just wish it had an option for adding antialiasing
The OSSC is a great device for your retro consoles if you no longer have a CRT TV and want the feel of it this device does just that if you don’t want the CRT feel and wanna play a retro console on a HDTV you can also do that and if your not into scanlines…you can switch those off too. I mainly bought this device for my PS2 and sadly I returned it because I was just gonna use it for my elgato which has some problems with this device and there was a slight flicker in the screen which really bothered my eyes although the flicker didn’t really show in the footage I had captured but was present through the tv now don’t get me wrong if you are not into capturing footage and don’t care for it and wanna plug your retro console into your tv and play like you would in 2004 then this device will be for you. Kaico’s customer support is also a big plus which is why I’m giving this 5 stars instead of 4 after I had returned this device I got a email from them asking what problems I had and how they could fix them and so forth and admittedly it broke my heart returning this device but I definitely recommend this OSSC the customer service is outstanding and they are always always always looking for ways to improve the product and find out what problems you had with it and try to help you with it.
Works great and upscales all consoles I have tried very well. All the settings worked on my tv and it was very easy to set up. Highly recommend purchasing if you want to play your old consoles on a modern television.
Wanted a ossc for a while but price put me off but this is a good deal not sure how it compares with the official model but it looks well made packaging is very nice, comes with the remote and the consoles look great i have the ps2 and original xbox hooked up to it at the moment using component cables and a component switcher its flawless the logitech harmony works with it as well. Very impressed.
I like it for play station. But could not use it for play station three
I’ve tried the OSSC with several consoles and it works great.
I use component, VGA and SCART inputs.
Photo: N64 RGB modded Lin4X+scanlines to CRT computer monitor.
This is a amazing little gadget! I love the way it looks and it’s so easy to use! Just simply connect your retro console into it, connect your ossc to your tv, turn it on, select what component you’re using and away you go!
Highly recommend this to anyone who’s wanting to play their retro consoles on there hd tv!
It’s not some crappy knock off, this is the real deal OSSC. It works great for me! I’ve never seen games presented so clear on my new flat screen TVs in my life
its an amazing device that allows for lot’s of custom option to set to your prefrence and works with amost everything you throw at i
This product is A1 quality, once you use the remote you can tailor resolution and sound quality.best choice period for retro gaming image is super clear,I would suggest getting quality cables the cheap ones buzzzz.
Great product well built and well packed. Provides great pictures on a number of retro consoles that provide RGB output.
Comes with a Power cable and remote control so great for the price.
This one does exactly what it says on the tin. Zero reason not to choose this one if the “usual” supplier doesn’t have it in stockor even if they do! The support staff was great with me in troubleshooting a few quirks I wasn’t used to as well!
This product is great if you’re looking to play your old systems on high def TV’s with the best clarity and speed. Look into the proper settings/ timings for your console and carts and the video quality you can achieve with RGB scart cables is fantastic! I have mine set up on a vizio 4k display and I have had no compatibility issues. Slight learning curve to dial in the settings properly, get the correct cables, etc. (though both my snes and genesis worked right when I plugged them in, tweaking settings vastly improved picture) but if your willing to buy into RGB gaming at this price you are probably dedicated enough to do a little research. Thank you kaico for making this open source product available for purchase!!!
The product works well, as advertised! But I’m taking the time to write this review because of the wonderful customer service. I have accidentally plugged in my OSSC using the wrong power supply, essentially bricking the device. When I sent an e-mail asking whether or not this is covered by the warranty, KAICO offered me a replacement without hesitation!
Sharp and crisp pixels, blazing fast line-doubling, and excellent quality components. This is THE product to get if you want to hook up your RGB or YPbPr enabled consoles to your HDTV or capture device. Just keep in mind compatibility may vary, as some capture cards and TV’s play nicer with out-of-spec resolutions and refresh rates than others.
I got mine mainly to use on the PS2 and it works wonders, definately 100x better than all those cheap analog to digital converters or upscalers. The firmware gets updated constantly and new features are added so make sure to check that out too. Image is very clean and you can also add scanlines in the mix which I like alot.
Works like a dream, with right cables in hand you can expect good quality picture out off your retro consoles.
This OSSC converter works fine with my Sega Saturn. I was able to use it on my 4K TV with no problems at all. I used the Scart with sync on Luma option.
Super nes work 100 ok but mega drive I only get pic but no sound
I’ve been messing with it non-stop and I’m very happy! Once you dial in the timings and other settings, the picture is incredibly sharp. There are ten profile slots so you can save your settings for each console and on top of that you can import settings from an SD card. I used firebrandx’s settings and it looks unbelievable!
It came really well packaged and the build quality seems to be good, but time will tell. I took it apart and everything looks solid. If anything happens to the unit, I’ll update the review.
P.S.
The OSSC just got a firmware update a few days after I received it and it updated just fine. The new features are working great!
Update:
I’ve been using this with a SNES and a PS1 using scart cables and the picture looks beautiful! Yesterday, I received some GameCube component cables and tried out game boy interface. GBA games look fantastic! With GameCube component cables this thing can upscale GBA games all the way up to 1080p and it doesn’t dissapoint!
So far, I’ve used this with both my PS2 and Sega Saturn and both work perfectly (note that the PS2 needs to have an RGB lead). The picture is great quality and there are enough options to tinker with the picture to get it how I like it. So far, very pleased.
Jetzr funktioniert alles super.
First of all, the notion that this is a “knockoff” OSSC is pretty dumb; it’s an open source project after all. I’ve had no issues with mine regardless of the console in question, other than one of my two TVs not supporting line 5x mode, which crops the image and isn’t desirable anyway. The only thing to keep in mind is that if you plan to use this to capture/stream gameplay, it’s notoriously uncooperative with most capture cards, including those made by Elgato. I found that my Elgato HD60s would record anything up to 4x (960p) if you use OBS and manually set the resolution to 1080p, then just correct the aspect ratio as needed. Overall, this device works brilliantly for my needs, but definitely do some research before picking one up! Might not work super well with your display/capture set up!
This is not going to be a review of the OSSC in general, for that, check out retroRGB or my life in gaming. This is specifically for this version/manufacturer. It appears to be very well put together, and on a side note, the community has checked into the solder work and decided it was fine. My personal results for hooking up my Wii via component video has been great so far. It looks just like the VGP version of the OSSC, so I can easily recommend this version. It comes with a remote with an overlay, and a decent enough psu, they both seem to work fine. Overall a good version of the hardware.
Delivery was fast and so far the product has been performing as expected with no issues to speak of at this time.
No issues with the quality of the converter unit itself. The included wall adapter felt a bit cheap, but that would be an easy replacement if I end up really worried as it’s just a 5v 1.5A round plug. The battery compartment on the remote was a bit too snug and the batteries were quite difficult to remove with just my fingers.
I’m not invested into the whole SCART ecosystem so I can’t speak to the quality of that input, I’m going to be using the unit with all my component video cables. I’ve only tested with a PS2 so far, but it was basically plug and play, video was output right away after selecting YpbPr on the remote and tweaking the image to my liking was simple enough. I anticipate the SNES and Wii will be a similar result.
I didn’t run into any video output incompatibility on either my LG 4K monitor or an old Samsung FHD TV.
I’ve been looking at the OSSC for a while and was going to get a DIY kit but time constraints stopped me.
Buying one pre-built can be a risk as you don’t know how well it’s been put together. The reviews were good for this so I had a punt.
I was not disappointed. Build quality is excellent and the remote is perfect.
The OSSC does everything I need and more. Picture quality is stunning and there’s zero lag.
You can set up profiles for each console/computer to ensure it’s tweaked to your liking.
Lg
I just upgraded my gaming TV to a 4K PC monitor so obviously there is no SCART connection. I had one of those cheap generic HD scalers before but it wasn’t perfect as there was a little input lag and there was ghosting when the image was moving. Then it died on me out of the blue so I looked into the OSSC. I’ve been hearing about for a while and thought I’d give it a shot now its readily available.
I have to say the first impression was jaw dropping at 5X line doubling 1080p with 25% scanlines. My Sega Saturn has never looked so crisp. I also tried my Megadrive and Snes, both work great too although not quite as clear as the Saturn which is to be expected as its a newer console with better RGB over the SNES especially.
You can also mask over ugly overscan areas on some Megadrive games like the orginal Sonic.
No detectable input lag as advertised.
The unit itself is nice and small and came well packaged with full colour manual and remote control with overlay already applied (some other sellers don’t do this) and the official power supply.
I have been well into using my Amiga`s for a while and been using cheap upscalers which work fine, and i decided to try one of these, and wow. So much better. Well worth the extra money, spend the extra and get one of these.
flexibility is great.ossc housing could be better because it looks home-made.lcd display is good.
Came in a box that included the unit, a universal power supply with adapters for all regions, a generic remote with a custom OSSC overlay and an instruction booklet in 6 languages(English,German,French,Italian,Spanish and Japanese)
Unit was well built without any sketchy chinese components. Came preloaded with firmware version 0.82.
Tested with a Playstation 1 model SCPH-7502 with an RGB SCART cable and it managed to scale 240p,288p,480i and 525i signals to signals a cheap 720p TV could display without any issue.
SCART / RGB :
SNES, Mega Drive, GameCube, PSOne, PS2, Sega Saturn
Component:
PS2 und PSP nativ
Mittels AVRa als Converter Composite auf Component ohne Scaling –> N64 und Atari 2600 (mit Composite Umbau)
VGA:
Great packaging, manual, Superb little converter, works well on Amiga, Atari ST and Sinclair Spectrum 128, very easy to use .
This is the best solution for playing games on a flat panel and I even prefer it over my two PVMs. I debated between getting Kaico vs “original” OSSC from Video Game Perfection. I originally purchased a refurb from the latter but they emailed me to tell me it was out of stock. Wasn’t the warmest customer service and I don’t get the best vibe from the owner of that site.
Pros:
– Near zero latency: I play some arcade games to a pretty decent standard and even a few frames of lag can be the difference between a 1cc or not. OSSC is as good as a CRT.
– Totally tweakable: So many settings to get your games looking how you want them. Including dimming scanlines.
– Well boxed, with it’s own Kaico-specific manual (not rip offs).
– Includes everything you need, including the power supply, remote and remote overlay (already attached). So you don’t have to purchase those additionally, as with VGP.
– Continuous development with firmware upgrades coming frequently.
– This is the version with audio and HDMI.
Cons:
– It’s not a plug and play solution, so you’ll need to find specs for your specific device and input that. My Neo Geo MVS, for example, took a lot of Googling to get working.
– Kaico is the original dev so you’re not supporting the project, but you can make a donation to marqs and the OSSC project.
– Open frame design (rather than enclosure) means that the boards are liable to be shorted, damaged or get dusty. It’s also a little ugly.
– They’re known to be a little unreliable, so Amazon’s good returns policy is a bonus here.
I’m so happy with this purchase. If you want to play retrogames on a modern flat panel (including 4k) then this is the one.
I got way more than expected when this turned up, the packaging and build quality including soldering are excellent its a very professionally finished product (the box now lives on my shelf!) someone has put a lot of work into getting this produced and out to gamers. I found none of the issues some cheaper units have had when reviewed such as the bad PSU and component connectors and feel its worth mentioning Kaico have not ripped off other peoples manuals and artwork – seems Kaico are doing their own thing with this, i’d seen the name on forums but will be keeping an eye on their products from now on.
At this price its incredible value for money, you get everything you need in the box ready to go and I got next day delivery free with Prime so it turned up quickly. I had seen the OSSC for 10 cheaper elsewhere but Its worth considering there are no import charges to pay with this one as Kaico are a UK based company and theres no waiting 30 days for it to arrive either, you also have the assurance of buying from Amazon plus I can tell you its good quality, are you really saving 10?!… (nope). I have seen Kaico branded OSSC on other web sites but I am informed they are not official so please just buy from here to make sure you get the same thing as me (I don’t know if Kaico also sell on famous auction sites?).
The actual operation of the device is just like any other OSSC the quality shocked me I did not know an analogue signal could be made to look so good. Im using a mid range Samsung 4K TV which always struggled with upscaling various scalers and line doublers it always looked blurry but now this TV supports all OSSC modes up to 5x and i’d say my setup looks subjectively better than emulation with practically zero lag (I think my TV is about 8ms slower than a CRT and the OSSC adds nothing). Even if your TV will only support a line x2 just go for it anyway as on my other TV a simple line double looks great and authentic once you add the scanlines, its also much sharper in line double than other devices I have tried.
There are a few settings to learn as with any high end AV kit but im getting the hang of it now after a week or so and navigating around the menus, it pretty much works out the box however just make sure you have good quality component and RGB scart cables (and PSUs in the case of the megadrive) and you will be very happy.
Excuse some of the pictures the aspect ratios are off as I am still setting up, I struggled to take pictures of the TV with a camera phone it looks better in person. Pictures are from a mix of x4 x5 modes for 240p and x2 with allow upsample for 480p.
This is a fantastic piece of kit which I bought in the hope to replace and old Sony DVD HDD which I was using to upscale an input fro SCART to HDMI out at 1080p then then onto a 4K TV. Also I wanted to let go of my my old Commodore and Amstrad CRT monitors however I a not sure I can bring myself to let for of these. The other reason for this was portability.
The first thing to mention was the quality of the product and packaging which sees some great effort made to give a quality feel. The build is solid and I do not feel as through anything will break or come loose. A manual is included and it’s easy enough to use more or less out of the box. There are a lot of functions to adjust however and these understanding behind many of these will require research unless this already your thing but I have been successful with just the basics.
If you are buying for a specific computer or console, it would be worth looking for some vids online to check there are no device restrictions, for example the Commodore 64 doesn’t actually output a signal in a similar way to other devices and at this early stage I do not know if I hardware mod on the 64 or an additional component might be required. Additionally, I’ve ordered another cable for my SNES which I believe with both of these machines is related to sync? That’s a new subject for me to learn.
OVERALL, this is the best product I could have possibly bought anywhere near this price. There are no lag issues, bizarre artefacts on screen for what i have tested and for the time being I am using this in a HP 27FWA Monitor and images are crisp. The audio out function is handy to plug into an amp as the sound is poop on a monitor of this size although I think a Bluetooth audio transmission would be fab provided it didn’t introduce interference. There are some great vids worth watching that explain in more detail different screen issues not uncommon when upscaling and especially on cheaper devices. Look for a vid by ‘My Life In Gaming”.
What I can tell you so far:
Sega MegaDrive 2 / MegaCD 2: good image and no lag or screen issues with fast scrolling (Sonic CD)
SNES: works well with the sync on luma cable however bit as pin sharp as other consoles which having read more about it’s a bit of an Achilles heal for the OSSC however it’s still very good and not a disappointment. It’s just not pin sharp. No biggie.
GameCube: a little fuzzy but still good, the likely issue was my cheap lead
Amiga: images above, actually really impressed with the colour and sharpness. Have noticed on Shadow of the Beast there are odd flickers but need to read up about this. Having seen YouTube reviews I have confidence this will be remedied in settings
Spectrum +3: Robocop was very clear and sharp
CPC464: I just received my TV kit. Fantastic. Works perfect. Now time for some Ninja Scooter Simulato
