Bought this based on a review of six garden rollers (2022). Not the most expensive or best in the review but for average gardener like myself, this is perfec
Excellent. I got a good tip from a review saying to use silver sand as it needs to flow freely to fill up the drum.
After researching rollers – I purchased this after reading other reviews.
Assembly is quite straight forward. Its well packed.
I filled my with sand – and like other reviews, the hole was a little too small but I made a funnel out of an old drinks bottle.
Added bonus of exercise whilst rolling your lawn.
I feel its a long process of rolling the lawn once a week and can start to see the benefit. Also provides nice stripes on a freshly cut lawn.
This is a pretty good roller in this size, weight and price category. The first one they sent had a bit of sand in andcthe bolt that covers the filling hole was damaged, so it had already been used, so i return it and reorder another, which was new un-used. Although i had my lawn stripped, leveled, then returfed, so is pretty flat, I’ve realised this size and weight roller have minimal impact despite doi g it a lot, but thats just how these are, not specific to this one, which is pretty good.
Does what it’s supposed to do. Make sure you fill with kiln dried sand.
A really sturdy bit of kit, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.
One tip, if you are going to fill the roller with sand do yourself a massive favour and buy 5 bags of kiln dried sand, if you don’t there is a fair chance the next ice age will flatten your grass before you get the drum filled up
I went for the slightly more expensive one for extra size. It is well constructed and I would recommend.
The filled weight is 70kg with water and 120kg with sand.
It is a lawn roller and as such will not flatten concrete hard, badly laid lawns! But performs well on my reasonable maintain domestic lawn.
Did the job perfectly when filled with kiln dried sand
I have only used this item once so my review is not based on a test of time. Build quality seems OK. Wasn’t hard to out together and it’s heavy enough filled with water to do the job. So far it’s worthy of five stars. I will be back on ranting should it fall to bits after a year outside
Easy to put together and certainly does the job. I choose to fill with ‘silver’ sand which took me approx two hours! With this exception, excellent roller.
Very good.the fill hole could do with being a larger diameter.
Arrived on time, very easy to assemble and fill with water. Haven’t tried sand yet, it seems heavy enough filled with water. Very happy with this product.
Glad I bought this at the amazon price as our garden centre had one that was 40% more expensive. It’snot real heavy enough when filled with water and filling it with sand is a pain.
his has been a great help in the laying of the base of my new shed, It has been easy to assemble and the service has was excellent.
A decent roller at a very decent price. I’ve filled mine with water to start with and it seems pretty heavy but will see how it goes with leveling out the lawn over the next few weeks. If I feel it needs a heavier weight to do the job, I’ll refill with sand. Once you’ve put sand in though, there’s no turning back. Water can be emptied but sand is there to stay so I suggest trying it with water first, just as I’ve done.
We had seen this in a local store but there was no delivery. The Roller is identical and delivered to the door! This did not save money but it did save effort and difficulty so I am pleased.
Great little product. Does its job. Can’t complain for the price. Avoid going over rough ground and you’ll be fine.
This has been easy to use and has kept me quiet and busy. Such fun and everyone stops and admires my new lawn. Thank-you
Exactly as described very good for the money. Was worried initially that there would be something wrong or not as expected, but my fears were unfounded and everything was in order, Very good value for the money and very quick service.
very good easy to assemble usually not very good at this sort of thing but it was easy would recommend
Was a bit suspect on buying at such a reasonable price but was delighted with build and quality.Easy to assemble and has good maneuverability.Great buy.
This is a great garden roller as it is very easy to fill, I would recommend that you fill with water as you can empty it when you finished the job, Putting sand in it would be almost impossible to empty
Roller excellent. Could have done with bigger filler hole on the product. Packaging ripped on arrival but nothing damaged inside.
Works well. Handy but leaky and fitting the handle could be easier, hence four not five stars.
Easy to carry when empty.
Hoping it will not rot away too quickly standing outside. Took ages to fill with dry sand because the filler hole is small.
I found the roller easy to assemble, some of the bolts took a little effort to fit but not too bad, the washers supplied aren’t really big enough for the scraper so I used two bigger ones. As I wanted the roller to be as heavy as possible to help level a rough lawn I filled the roller with sand. Building sand proved too wet to flow properly through the hole, but got 4 x 15kg bags of sandpit sand and a funnel which was miles better and mean the roller is now quite heavy and does a good job, but not exactly easy to push. I also put some copper grease on the bolt to try and prevent it rusting.
Promptly delivered in good order. We have used it to flatten horse and footprints and found it does the job very well.
Great product which had been well received. First use yesterday heralded great results. Water filled and made a great weight for the rolling effect o be good.
I am doing my house and garden up. Last summer I wanted to start laying lawn where the previous owners had laid flag stones. My son (15) did most of the work, clearing the ground. I found this roller after much searching, as its not something you need every day, so I wanted something affordable but still sturdy enough. Arrived quickly and very easy to put together. We put water in for weight and were very pleased with the ease of use. The grass laid so far looks great. We emptied it out over the winter so it doesn’t freeze or rust inside..
This roller does what is says on the tin – a very sturdy roller and extremely heavy when filled with sand!
I decided to fill my roller with sand because I recall my father filling his roller with water and the welded seam bursting when it was left out during a severe frost. Having seen the comments about problems filling with damp sand, I decided to use Kiln Dried Block Paving Sand from Wickes at 4.29 per sack. The sand was very free running and went into the drum quickly and easily through a funnel. I used three 25 kg sacks of sand and these filled the drum almost completely.
I have an established lawn that over the years has become a little bumpy with worm casts, ant nests and general use. I assumed that before rolling it would be best to wait until some rain had dampened the ground, but being impatient to try out my new roller, I went ahead and rolled my dry-as-a-bone lawn. Not really knowing the best technique for using the roller, at first I tried rolling up and down the whole length of the lawn. This provided a good physical work out, but not any noticeable results. So I tried working on a high spot, just rolling back and forth two or three feet at a time and changing direction slightly each time, to avoid making a channel in the lawn. By rolling over and over the same small patch of lawn it resulted in a circular area of about two or three feet diameter that was nicely flattened. No doubt, when the ground gets softened by rain it will need a lot less work, but with perseverance this technique does produce results on dry ground.
I spend some time looking at previous reviews to identify the best value roller that was substancial enough for my needs. This, as previous reviews, is great. It’s held up really well and have been used extensively. Filled with water has been heavy enough and sand is the other option – as pointed out before the hole is small so filling it may test my patience. Looking for a good reasonable roller – this definately ticks the box.
Very speedy and efficient delivery from Amazon. Roller is easy to assemble. Looks a sturdy beast but will not get a try out now until the Autumn. Will keep you posted.
Product was received without any fixings to assemble it but replacements were quickly supplied by Handy. Easy to assemble but a nightmare to fill with sand! As I had a pile of soft sand in the garden I thought I would use that. The filler hole in the roller is quite small for sand and getting it through a funnel meant it needed to be dry. I spent several days drying 2 barrow loads of sand! 1 barrow load made the roller heavy but it was a nightmare to push as the sand settled at the bottom of the roller. The second barrow load makes it really heavy but easier to push. After all the rain, the ground is soft enough to flatten – although a large area of grass means I could get quite fit from rolling it! Would highly recommend the product especially if you have access to large quantities of dry sand.
Tempted though I was to track down a beautiful vintage roller with cast iron roller and wrought iron handle like we had in the garden when I was a kid (wonder where that went!) an urgent desire to bash down the bumps in the lawn while the ground is about as soft as it gets sent me hunting around for something available right now. The Handy Garden Roller is pretty large, with a strong enough steel roller. The handle is thin soft steel but it seems strong enough, although time will tell, and the rubber grip pleasant to hold. The scraper removes grass cuttings as the build up on the roller head – an unexpected bonus, as it’ll make it much easier to get the excess grass cuttings off the lawn than trying to rake them. It took about 10 minutes to assemble – nothing difficult at all.
There is just one irritation – and that cost me about 3 hours before I got to assemble it. The instructions state that the roller will be about 30Kg heavier if it’s filled with sand rather than with water, so I thought that’d be a worthwhile additional investment. Problem is that the bung in the roller is just 20mm in diameter. Getting three bags of sand through that hole took two hours or more. I’d bought sharp sand initially, but after the first one I changed them for the smoother builders’ sand. It might only have been marginally faster, but at least it abraded my hands a lot less. Absolutely dry sand would probably have been a lot easier – I had thought that it would be possible to pour it in through a funnel – but all the sand from the local builders’ merchants was just slightly damp. So “The Handy” – if you’re serious about a sand-filled option, how about a wider bung in the next version?
By the way: while I’ve got three Wickes bags of sand in so far, I suspect that there’s room for another one if you really want to go for maximum weight.

The roller arrived within two days of placing the order. Build quality is very good and it’s easy to assemble. Only one problem – the plug that retains water in the roller was cross-threaded. This prevented it from being fully tightened resulting in a leak (even with the use of plumbers jointing compound). However, on contacting Handy, a replacement plug was sent out first class post without any hassle. Excellent customer service.
Moles trashed my lawn a couple of years ago, so this year I finally got round to repairing the various dips and mounds created by collapsed tunnels etc. I wouldn’t use a roller to spread sand/soil, but definitely makes a massive difference when you compact the stuff with a roller and then bed-in the grass seed on the worst affected areas. This garden roller is easy to put together, the water doesn’t leak out of the seal and is good VFM IMO!
I bought mine to roll a football pitch so needed a decent weight at a good price – which this is.
Delivery was spot on, ordered Thursday afternoon, delivered Monday.
Box says 102kg but the actual weight is correct on the supplier site – it weighs 120kg when filled with sand.
Darend good value for money.
Great product and does the job well. I filled with water and used vasoline on the thread. Easy to assemble and use.
A high quality and practical tool, I purchased it for rolling earth flat in preparation for laying turf and it did a great job. You can fill it with water or sand to add the weight, and then remove it when you need to transport or store it; which is very practical. It was easy to put together and also to take apart if need be. If you do fill it with water the seal around the plug can leak, but this presents no problem when using the roller. No complaints.
my handy roller is just fine at last i have finally got my lawn nice and flat, and now my grand children can play without tripping over uneven lawn, i would recomend it to any one who as the same problem. bazzo
After reading good reviews, I bought this roller to use on a newly laid lawn. I was probably very unlucky, but it leaked from a faulty weld the first time I used it. However, top marks to Handy, the service/support phone number was clearly marked on the product, and when I rang them they couldn’t have been more helpful. I was given the option to contact the seller who would arrange to collect and replace, or Handy would despatch a new drum to me immediately if I was happy to dispose of the old drum myself. I took the offer of a new drum which arrived the next day, fitted it and the roller proved very successful. (I put the old drum on my drive marked “scrap” and it disappeared by itself!) It’s a 5-star review from me because the product was excellent once the leak was fixed, but particularly because of the first-class support in dealing with a problem.
Yes, its great what a fantastic idea to fill with water as we can take it with us when we move, and my husband has used it for his beloved lawn.
Delivery came within 48h of placing the order. Assembly was easy. Water-filling was easy but the roller was not heavy enough for my lawn so I replaced the water with sand – that took about two hours using a funnel. I greased the sealing nut so that it will not stick or rust. Now very happy.
I was looking for a garden roller that would be easy to handle but heavy enough to deal seriously with the improvment of a very badly maintained lawn. My impression was quickly gained that garden rollers have gone out of fashion and that the average householders with a garden tend nowadays to replace their lawns with decking, concrete slabs or patches of Zen gravel with the odd carefully placed monolith. So I was delighted when I was able to locate a supplier of the “Handy Garden Roller”. It is delivered ready for assembly. The roller part at this stage is light and has to be filled with water or sand to give it the weight needed for effective lawn flattening. I found it easy to assemble and filled it with water. This made it heavy enough for my purpose. To have filled it with sand would have been more difficult and would have required a filler funnel and would have increased the weight about two and a half times making it much more difficult to handle. Partly filling with sand might not be a good idea as it might give a bumpy ride, especially if the sand is not bone dry. Changing the filling from water to sand would wet the sand. Changing from sand to water would be more difficult as getting the sand out could be difficult and time consuming, especially if the sand is damp and when sand filled the roller must be very heavy to handle. So it is best to decide from the outset whether you want a heavy, or less heavy roller. I would have preferred a roller that was split in two as this would have made it more manoeuvrable but this would have complicated the design and increased to cost. Overall I am content with the roller, have found it fit for purpose and, filled with water, can handle its weight without undue stress, Filled with sand I might have to take up weight training!
Good product – does exactly what it should. Only small negative is that the hole for putting the sand in is too small and it took ages. Water is an option but we didn’t want to keep emptying and filling the roller. Overall I would recommend.
he garden roller came within the week have had to use it only the once last week when a lorry went on my new laid turf and the roller done the jobit was made to do.
A very good handy roller, we use ours at the cricket club, and it is ideal for between innings. The only problem we found was we wanted to fill it with sand,so we could get the maximum weight, trouble is most bags of sand you can buy are damp. we found it took ages to fill up the roller, has it has only got a very small filling hole,ok for water, but painstaking for sand.makers need to make a bigger hole and cap.once full though it does a excellant job.
Arrived very [promptly. The item is good value for money. Wish it was a bit more heavier.
This delivery of this roller was outstanding – next day in the morning. It is robust and the roller is of steel rather than plastic which I was very happy about. It is exceptionally easy to assemble (just the the handle and the scraper). I filled it with water and it is heavy but not too heavy in use. I would recommend putting some petroleum jelly (or grease – but this might perish the washer) around the threads of the filler cap and this should keep it from rusting. An excellent piece of kit which does the job.
A good quality roller delivered within 48 hours. However, when I filled it with water and tightened the stopper, it leaked. I contacted the helpline, who despatched a new stopper and washer – unfortunately, the new nylon washer was broken! I contacted them again and asked for another new washer and to please check that it was not broken. No apologies – and it never arrived. I bought a rubber washer locally for 49p and it’s now fine. A pity that an otherwise good product was let down with very poor after sales service.
fine little rooler for small tasks. not much one can say about a garden rolle
