Got these for band rehearsals as an alternative to having to use (often horrible quality, poorly fitting) in-ear monitors every time. They are great. The tl;dr is at the end.
Let’s be real – unless your the guitarist from Linkin Park, you shouldn’t be playing shows with big headphones as a guitarist (and even then, it’s questionable lol). That being said – I was tired of having to clean my in-ear monitors all the time due to ear wax build up for jamming. Doesn’t help I have some cheap ones that immediately become useless if I don’t clean them after like 2 jams – sometimes they gradually get quite quiet. Then if I accidentally knock the cable they get loose, etc. Couldn’t hear my vocals at all for a month – was blaming everything except my in-ears (or rather, my poor maintenance of them)
I got these Vic Firth’s as I just sometimes I wanted to be able to come in and jam and actually hear myself sing without any variables that come with in-ear monitors. THey are great and isolate sound obviously incredibly well – I’m surprised the 25 DB reduction isn’t as much as most in-ear monitors (37 db for most) – but that figure on the in-ear monitors is assuming you have a perfect fit – which isn’t always possible if your in-ear foam pieces don’t fit perfect in your ears, or if you accidentally knock them loose, etc. We jam very loud hard rock covers (2 half stacks, bass rig, loud jerk drummer) and didn’t have any ringing in my ears. Unlike in-ear monitors – its totally consistent too since you’re not one weird arm movement away from knocking
The sound quality isn’t excellent (for me it was totally fine since I’m not doing any recording work with them) – but its still like good – far better than any in-ear monitor under $500 you’re going to get. We were only running lead and backing vocals through ours so can’t comment on how a full mix would do.
They aren’t incredibly comfortable – cups around the ears are fine but I just found the headphone and adjustment not perfect – but again totally fine for like a 2 hour rehearsal.
TL;DR:
I’ll still use in-ear monitors live for shows but these are a totally acceptable ‘on-ears’ monitor and hearing protection for rehearsals. Good enough sound, comfort and hearing protection. Isolates everything enough that you can hear whats coming through.
Replaced the older Vic forth model with this updated pair. The other pair lasted about 4pr 5 years then started to cut off and have static in the right can. This model seems essentially improved from last model regarding sound. Isolation allows more sound to penetrate than last model but given change in the plastic headphone shell properties, the drums seem to have a brighter sound rather than warm. Overall happy with purchase.
I needed headphones for practicing drums. That’s what these are for. You’re on this page because you know everyone uses these and there’s a reason. While the sound isn’t outstanding at all, it’s more than good enough (and better than a lot of drummer headphones). The exterior sound isolation is very good and makes it safe to practice drums and you can keep the music volume low in the phones. Very happy I finally bought these.
My child love the ear muffs especially when it’s storming outside. The quality is great for the money and it fits just right.
No nonsense, comfortable and with a balance of volume, tone and isolation that is almost perfect for drumming anywhere. Also, not priced crazy. Great for studio and practice work. I Highly recommend them. They are hands down better than all other alternatives near this price range. And many above it.
Took my 10 year old to his first loud rock show and he wore these. He had a blast. 10/10 would recommend. He said they were comfortable and didn’t hurt his ears or head.
Sound quality very good but fit very tightly on the ears, with no adjustment. Also no left/right channel indicatio
These are fantastic headphones. I have been recording the same way for decades: earplugs in, headphones cranked so they can be heard over the drums. When I put these on, the drums were beautifully attenuated, and as a pleasant side effect, the drums also sound really really good when these are on. I have been able to reduce my headphone volume by 75% which reduces the amount of bleed the mics pick up. They seal so well, however, that if you sweat while playing, you’ll be mopping your ears out. Overall, a fantastic addition to the recording set up!
Super Hi-fidelity they are not, but they still are well in the good range, especially for what are intended for, that is protecting an acoustic drummer’s ears while still providing for an enjoyable playing experience. They do fit tightly, which I have to believe is good for isolation, but you will know they are on your head. These are NOT active noise cancelling, but rather passive noise isolating. You can still read the drums acoustically through the cones, but I find that adding just a bit from the drum mics in the monitor mix brings out more of the clarity and richness of the kit. Still, there is enough of the drums reading through that it would be very reasonable (in my opinion) to play just hearing them passively through the cones, at least playing inside an enclosed cage. Bottom line, I was surprised by how much I liked these, especially for the relative cost.
hey’re a tad tight and always trying to fold up on themselves… however, for the $ and usage in studio, they simply work well
I’ve been looking for headphones that blocked enough sound out so that I didn’t have to blast music in my ears while practicing. Finally these do the trick. I’ve tried other headphones and some that were designed for drumming did a very bad job at blocking enough sound AND were comfortable at all.
I recommend these highly if you’re looking for a practice set that isn’t too expensive!
Bought these to use on my Roland drum kit (TD17 KVX) much better than what I was using before, sound quality is very good for the price
Good noise cancellation while still being able to hear my drumming; perfect balance for me. Comfortable for longer sessions and durable so far.
just bought a new pair, it fulfills its promise to shield your ears form high volume, and way comfortable! don’t scoff at the cost, you can’t afford to not have these! had an older pair from about 7-8 years ago that held up very well, still worked as promised, gave them to my neighbor who just started playing cuz she was complaining of ringing ears and headaches from her drum playing, absolutely no complaints from her. they still do the job after all these years.
Absolutely fantastic for noise isolation while playing drums. However, very mediocre-to-bad audio quality on the low end frequencies. Also, the tight fit that helps with sound isolation also make them a little uncomfortable. Would probably order again, but they’re are better options for a higher price
I like the noise cancelling effect, and the protection offered by the product.
Could be more comfy though.
I dont use these often. I bought them about a year ago as I was preparing to go into the studio to record drums. At the time I was also suffering from some sorta odd inner ear discomfort, and was worried that some of the reviews said these werent too comfortable. Fortunately, at the time, i got thru 3 days back to back, about 6hrs a day, with no issue. However I will say, they are tight, at least on my head, and there is a good deal of pressure on the ears. However, i removed the ear foam and found a very firm foam circle which I removed, and that relieved a bit of the pressure on the ear.
Isolation is good, but not perfect… though perfect isolation is impossible. Sound quality is good. Again, used them for 3 days with no issue recording drums, so I was able to hear the tracks to play along with, and not have them be drowned out by the drums right infront of me.
Build quality is solid as well. No issues so far, but again, they dont see a ton of use. Id recommend them.
My teenage son uses these while drumming. He puts his music ear buds underneath. They work really well, are comfortable and feel really good quality. Would recommend
Bought these headphones after trying a pair my drumming guru mate had and was blown away by the quality and reproduction of sound this pair produced. I had used Bose for 5 years previously but these are such a good drum oriented set that they are the bew kings of the kit.

These headphones offer great hearing protection. I used to practice the drums with a regular pair of earbuds in, and I could sense that it was damaging my hearing. Sometimes I would use musician’s earplugs, but those aren’t great if you’re trying to play along to something. That was my motivation for getting these headphones, and I haven’t looked back since. I have had them a little over a year and I use them every day.
The sound quality is decent. In my opinion, these are ear protection and the fact that you can listen to music through them is a bonus feature. They’re great for playing along to something on the drums, but I wouldn’t recommend them as ‘listening headphones’.
They look pretty cool compared to other ear protection, so I guess that’s a plus.
My one complaint is that they are uncomfortable to wear for long periods. I usually take a 2 minute break after every 20 minutes of practicing because of this. You could probably get around this by putting some foam on the headband, but it doesn’t bother me enough to want to put in the effort.
Overall I’d highly recommend these to any drummer, even in light of the discomfort issue.
As a guitarist I want to play my guitar with the headphones plugged in without having to turn them up too much to compensate for the natural sound of the guitar. It’s not very loud, but I have sensitive hearing.
This product line seems to be marketed at drummers, at least on Amazon. I wanted a combination of passive sound deadening and inbuilt speakers because normal headpohnes of the type I was using didn’t block enough background sound.
The lead is a bit short. I’m standing up and I can’t really move around much so it’s not ideal. The ear pieces are too small to go over my ears. I had some old ear cups from another set of headphones that put between my ears and the headphones and my ears happily fit in those instead. Because they didn’t fit my ears they pressed a bit in the wrong places that wasn’t that nice and my ears started to get hot very quickly. The retrofitted ear cups fixed that. Different material, bigger space for ears.
I can still hear the electric guitar, but I don’t have to turn the amplified volume up as much to compensate.
I think they’re OK overall. They do the job I was after. They seem a little expensive when I’ve got cheaper, better sounding headphones and cheaper bigger sound deadening ear defenders, but I guess that’s a price you pay for a more niche product.
It’s a good idea though.

I’ve owned a pair of these for about 3 years at this point and they see pretty regular use. To get right to the point, they are great at isolating you from outside sound will letting you listen to a monitor mix or music. The audio quality isn’t perfect but it’s not bad for the price, especially considering the other qualities of the headphones. I have a pretty big head and wear glasses and find them comfortable enough for extended band practices. They do eventually start to wear on you and need a break, though. I have other audio-focused over-the-ear headphones I can wear comfortably for significantly longer than these and it is for the reason that I’m deducting one star.
Ultimately, I bought these to protect my hearing and they do that perfectly. I developed tinnitus at a young age and am now very careful with sound levels. These have ensured no progression of my hearing loss thus far. Take care of your ears! The added features of being able to listen to your monitor mix is a bonus and I believe the whole package to be worth the price.
A longer lead would be fantastic, preferably twice the length.

These do the job and sound great.
You wont be disappointed.
Bought these for my son to use in his drum room, he needed ear protection but also needed to be able to wear wireless headphones underneath. These are deep enough to allow him to wear his beats headphones and still offer good protection.
As any musician knows, Vic Firth is a big name in the drumming business, providing quality hardware at a good price. So when I saw this pair of ear defenders under the same name, I jumped at the chance to get a pair.
Drumming is a great pastime, but as important as the drums, cymbals and sticks one chooses is adequate ear protection. And in my case, where my kit is housed behind a perspex drum shield to reduce noise to the neighbours, I am taking the full force of the drum and cymbal reverberations, so it is essential I have very good ear protection.
I received the ear defenders very promptly from Amazon direct and the first thing that struck me after taking them out of the box was how light they were. Placing them over the ears, they felt really tight, but then they need to be to do the job they are intended for — to reduce the volume of the drums to your ears by 25 decibels.
But despite the snug fit, they are really nicely cushioned and in just a few minutes I realized they were not uncomfortable. Now to test them with the drumming. Impressive. Everything is nicely muted, but you can still pick out the strokes and, equally as important, the metronome click. The holding strap on the set slides back and forth to accommodate the most suitable fit for each person’s head size.
These ear defenders are great value for the money and if you double the price you can get a set that you can listen to music on as well. In addition, there is special set for kids.
I have used Vic Firth sticks from day one for my drumming and I now have the perfect solution for protecting my hearing with these ear defenders — and at a great price too. Great buy. Five stars recommended.
Thanks for reading my review I hope you found it helpful.
The only reason I bought these headphones was the sound isolation. And the job is done. I used to use Marshall Monitor Bt headphones for playing my Roland electronic drums. Marshall pair is amazing but you can still hear the hittimg sound on the cymbals. With Vic Firth pair the problem is solved, no sound but the cymbals’ digital sound.
As expecting the sound quality is not that good for listening to music but for playing along they are perfect.
Love them. So happy. Perfect for drummers. I don’t play without them now. They make the drums sound sooo lovely. Thanks vicfirth
Great for sound isolation
Very big though. Similar isolation to my Shure SE 215’s which are more discreet & not as heavy
Using with my electronic kit, sound really good. My previous headphones I was using weren’t giving me enough volume plus bass drum and crash sounds were a bit messy. These cancel external sound really well and allow me to turn the volume up higher, sound quality is really good.
Sound pretty good with guitar aswell.
Very happy

These headphones are great for their noise cancellation properties, they really work. The problem that I’ve had with my e-drums is that I have to play at a lower volume to protect my hearing and also higher volumes cause me severe ear discomfort. In doing this the noise of the sticks on the pads is quite loud and I can hear this as loud or louder than the sound coming from my drum software when wearing other headphones . I’ve tried to reduce the sound of the pads, tried different sticks etc. and nothing has worked so I thought I’d try a different approach and I’m really pleased that I did. These headphone solve that problem very effectively . They are a bit heavy and bulky compared to other headphones I’ve tried and the sound quality is possibly not right up there but these are minor considerations for me as they get the job done so well and for the price they’re a bargain.

I bought these to protect my hearing. I play in a loud band and I’ve used in-ear monitors (Mackie) that were pretty good at blocking the sound, but not good enough to stop my ears from ringing at the end of the night. Then I tried Bose headphones with active noise cancellation and they failed at very loud sounds like rim shots and loud guitar leads. These are the best I’ve tried. They drop the sound levels significantly and without any active noise cancellation. The only 2 complaints are that they are not comfortable on long sets because they have to be tight to block the sound. I understand that and am willing to deal with it. The second thing is I was getting a little “crackle” in the monitor even though I didn’t have it turned up very loud. Wasn’t too bad and could have been an issue with the PA. Overall, these are great at protecting your hearing and sound-wise, not perfect, but not bad.
I’ve had Sennheisers and various studio headphones, but for drumming, these are the best. Lightweight, very snug fit, so even with lots of movement while drumming, they stay put but still very comfy. High level of isolation (25db attenuation). Folding design so can sling them in a bag without worrying about breaking them, good build quality too. 50mm driver, get lovely bass from these too, great sound quality overall. The only drawback is the cable is not detachable. Having a jack and a detachable cable would reduce the chance of cable damage
Sound from the headphone speakers is really good. However as a drummer the the sound from the drums is not cancelled as much as I had hoped and is much more intrusive and “tinny” than when just using my Peltor earmuffs which use the exact same earmuff cup. I suspect there is a little more muffling in the earmuffs than the headphones due to the speakers taking up some space in the cup.
Overall though I am fairly happy with them, they do the job and are good value for money.

The sound quality is amazing perfect noise cancelling headphones perfect for drumming sadly the lead is quite short so if you want to have an extension it’s best if you buy a two female JackAdapter and longer male jack lead. Apart from that absolutely brilliant product sometimes hurts around the head

Definitely work, if you’re having trouble hearing your music or click over the kit then these are for you. I hit hard and I can hear my click fine. I was a bit skeptical before, but they work fine. Bit dear though
Pretty good product but….Cable should be a bit longer, and they pick up some bad resonance from my 10″ tom.

I’ve got severe tinnitus and have to watch out when I’m out and about. Usually I wear ear defenders to help going down the street but with these Vic Firth’s – I can enjoy my music quietly, blocking out external noise, and enjoy some peace and calm whilst listening to heavy metal… (no paradox there I promise!).
Would thoroughly recommend the investment in these, and especially encourage young musicians to consider getting a pair and protecting your ears with them.

I can believe how good the headphones work with my Sabian sound kit. My drum kit sounds amazing, its a 100% improvement from what I thought were good headphones. Well worth the money.
Great product. My 15yr old son is now drumming his heart out to his favourite music. Rock O
Excellent product. Great noise suppression for drums. Space to wear headphones underneath too for playing along with music. Happy with purchase.
Brilliant product, brought as a present.
My partner is very happy with them.
Great sound quality.
Bought this for my son who is a drummer and he’s really pleased with these headphones. Very good noise isolation but can still hear the drums perfectly.
Every drummer needs these ! They are the best don’t waste time on others.
Allows you to protect your ears from harsh drum sounds in small rooms.
Allows you to get a nice and safe mix of audio in your ears.
My kit sounds so much better I’m my small studio where before it was simply too loud and harmful.
Now I mic the kit and able to control the volume through the mixer out to the headphones.
I bought another pair for my son as we play two kits together and wanted him to benefit form the great mix I had. Also like any Dad I wanted to protect his little ears.
I strongly believe that these headphones will save money because it improves the acoustic sound of cymbals and drums while allowing you to plug the iPhone or whatever in to play along with.
They could only be improved by having a detachable cable so you could just use them as ear defenders if you wanted to without the lead dangling down.
I have tinnitus so I know how important this issue is, I with I had these years ago to look after my ears as they would have allowed me to play Drums safely.
Get these now 🙂

Get these now 🙂
OK, there’s some very mixed reviews on here so I thought I’d share my experience with these headphones.
I’ve been using the VF Mk I headphones for a year or two and was pretty impressed with them as they offered good attenuation and allowed some top end from the cymbals through. The audio quality was a bit lacking on the bottom end but was acceptable. Sadly, they bit the dust at a recent gig so I visited Amazon but was a bit worried to see the Version II headphones advertised. I purchased a pair and used them at a gig last night.
They grip quite tightly so no chance of them falling off. I was concerned that they’d be uncomfortable at the end of the gig but actually they were fine. I don’t like the ‘acoustic’ sound of them quite as much as the old model…it’s a bit flat but the level of attenuation is still good and comfortable.
The in-ear sound quality is certainly different to the older model. I use microphones on my drum kit as well as microphones on my band-mates’ instruments, controlling the sounds and levels with an 8-track mixer. Here’s how the kit sounds:
Kick drum: A little bit more bottom end but not drastically different
Snare: This does sound different…much more middle frequencies making by 6.5″ brass snare sound like a wooden model.
Toms: These sound better I think. More of a studio sound so something of an improvement.
Overheads: Less treble…a bit more middle. Able to compensate with the mixer.
Rather strangely, my cowbell cut through really well as did snare rim-shots. I was never able to hear them with the the old headphones.
So, to conclude, I’m a little bit disappointed overall but these are OK and do the job. Pretty reasonable price. It remains to be seen how long they last.
Hope this helps.

I ordered these headphones after trying various other headphones from Bose, Sony, and Beats for my ALESIS SURGE DRUM KIT. I had an issue with volume coming out of the headphone jack of the Alesis module. I was ready to return the drum kit due to the low volume. I could hear the hits on the surfaces almost as much as the drum sounds coming out of the headphones. I tried these headphones as a last ditch effort and to my surprise, they worked!! No problems, the volume is nice and loud when playing the drums and it does a great job isolating external noise. The only complain I could have is that they are a little tight on the ears, but I understand that it is needed to provide the sound insolation. It is not really an issue unless I use them for more than two hours. After two hours, I take a little break and I can use them all over again with no problems. Highly recommended to use for drum kits. I cannot say anything about using them for other devices like stereos or phones since I am exclusively using them for drumming.
my Son
Amazing. Its just what a drummer needs. Its isolated by 25 dB which is amazing for drums so you can really hear the song/click.
I was very surprised at how well the ambient sound was reduced. I am a drummer and I have tintinous. I really wanted custom in ear monitors (AT6 64audio) but can’t afford them right now. So this was my last shot before giving up 40 plus years of playing. I also bought a Berringer personal headphone stereo amplifier. ( I consider Berringer cheap and definately not pro equipment, but was very surprised by how well it worked and the quality). I used a monitor send from my mixer hard wired into the headphone amp. The music was clear with no distortion. I actually had to add my drums into the mix to hear them cleanly. When playing, I had no problem hearing the music at a reasonable volume (half of max volume) along with my drums. Definately no ear fatigue and it will protect my ears from addition hearing loss. I wish I had these when I first started playing in grade school. I added live vocals into the mix and they were clear and on top of the mix perfectly. So bottom line I really like them. The only down side is they are hot around your ears. (From sweating while playing) Small price to save your hearing!
Ordered these for my husband, who’s a drummer as he wanted these for a Christmas present. He’s reported back that they perform really well while he’s playing.
I have been using Vic Firth SIH1 for quite some time and have always been impressed by its performance in a studio setting. I chose these for my little one (3,5 years old) for protection, over other brands mainly because of my appreciation to the SIH1. They did not disappoint. Highly recommended.
Our grandson has started to learn the drums and we were concerned that his ears may be harmed. The blue model are trendy enough for him to wear and are perfect for him .
Amazing sound quality and really good at cancelling outside noise. I have these for my electric drum kit. Highly recommend, you will not regret it!
I’m a drummer, and I’ve tried several different types of ear bud (iem) and headphone solutions trying to listen to my monitor mix while playing the drums.
These headphones are some of the best I’ve tried to accomplish that, and do an excellent job of cutting out the sound of the drums and listening to the mix without cranking the mix volume up too high. I also own a pair of Direct Sound EX-29, and would prefer the Vic Firth to those every time.
The sound is good, but I wouldn’t say incredible. I’m no audio expert, but to me, the sound feels just a tad shallow, focusing more on mid range and into the highs, and lacking a little in the low end. You won’t feel the thud of your kicks that rattle your brain, but alternatively, your mix is going to be clean and clear and not muddied by too much bass. I enjoy having my mix at a lower volume and not having the mix encroached upon by the acoustic volume of the kit. This is something I’ve struggled with while jamming with others — one of us is always too loud to compensate.
I enjoyed these vic firth so much, I had to come on here and give my suggestion, as I’ve had some difficulty finding something that worked well, and I was personally worried that the lower price point of these would make them inferior.
Brilliant ear defenders. Bought as a gift for my son who received a drum kit for Christmas…these really are a must for any budding drummer. Should really of bought a set for the rest of the household!!!
Seriously good sound insulation for an acoustic drum set. Significantly better than just wearing a pair of full ear headphones. Would recommend
son likes product although may block out a little too much noise as he needs to be able to here other instruments
Theyre fairly good my teenager happy with them. They’re fairly tight when you put them on around the head but still comfortable to use. Currently used mainly for drum practise sessions at home and studio.
hi bought these for my special needs daughter who is very sensitive to noise but since wearing these she is much more happy and going out is less stressful they fit nice and tight leave no marks around her ears i have tried them on myself and they feel ok nice color would recommended to any one who wants to block out noise
I purchased these headphones for my four-year-old. He finds them very comfortable, and will even wear them when he doesn’t need to do so. They don’t cancel out noise completely, which is actually what we wanted. They serve to decrease noise, while still allowing the child to hear someone speaking to him/her. The headphones are also adjustable, so he will be able to use them for years. He currently uses them at their smallest. They are good quality, affordable, and easy for a child to put on and take off.
I bought these headphones to shield myself from a noisy colleague at work. At first they felt tight and hurt a little, but now they sit really well. The sounds my colleague make (burps, sneezes, talking, singing) don’t fully disappear, but they are a lot less present and I no longer get distracted.
I bought these to use at practise in a Samba band and it cuts down the noise level very well.
Needed some ear protection for my son who is learning the drums. Read a few reviews that said that this not very comfortable to be worn. However, he’s now been using this for about 1 month now and there has been no complains. I’ve also tried it on and it fits my head too. All in all, no complaints. It does seem to cut out the high pitch sounds and my son actually prefers playing the drums witht this on as it gives the bass drum a deeper sound.
If you are a drummer who wants to practice covers or use in ear monitors at a gig but don’t want to damage your hearing these are perfect.
It says something like a 20db cut within the headphones, and if you don’t know what thats like. It doesn’t matter.
Basically it condenses the sound. It feels like the sound from your drums have been mixed to sound really crisp and reduced in volume.
Im sure if you’re recording these would be great too.
I brought the ear defenders as I find loud music hurts my ears. Now I can enjoy being in loud place’s without pain, with the added bonus that I can hear everything at a decent sound level. I find them much more comfortable than the ear plugs Which I had been using. the parcel was well packaged and delivery was within the time stated.
My son has found these much more comfortable for practice sessions than the in ear variants, they are also easier to see as they are bigger! Construction is solid and good value for the price, if I needed another pair I would not hesitate to buy these again. So why 4 stars? These do not have options for adjusting the size of the headband as you would find on more expensive headphones, at this price and for this job it feels like a minor niggle which could only be fixed at significantly greater cost.
These Are Awesome they really do lower all the frequencies to allow you to play drums, I have always used Ear Plugs Normally But These Are Far Greater I wish I got them sooner, you can just pop them on and play or you can ear phones under them and play to music. their absolutely Perfect!!
I was advised by a drummer that ear defenders were sensible – especially for children. These were designed with that in mind, and my 8 year old daughter likes these for her drumming. She thinks that they are comfortable.
