Wanted to be able to record series and pause live TV etc. This freesat box is perfect for this. It will pay for itself in a few months. One feature I was looking forward to use, was the remote record from your phone on the app, but the app dies not work with newer versions of Android software. Complained and they said it was being worked on. It’s not quite as slick as a SKYQ and I only watched one program on the sky channels anyway, so this is ideal for me.
Early problems with this box sometimes failing to connect to satellite dish. Rang Freesat, who answered promptly, and problem soon resolved by helpful and knowledgeable staff who took me through the steps to reset the box and then suggested the optical cable connection to my soundbar. He said this was more reliable than the HDMI cable.Since then it has given no problem , but fingers remain crossed as it’s “early doors”.
4k works well on this box you must have a wide band lnb I bought one from eBay and fitted myself easy to do common sense is required if you do not have one it will work but glitche as I found out the new lnb sorted this it does say on the lnb right up that it’s for sky q and Freesat 4k so far so good good bye sky it’s been 6 years off not getting robbed
A bit glitchy (freeze frame) with frustrating remote. I much preferred the Humax remote, much easier to use.
Set up in less than 5 minutes, this box works with a sky Q dish and LNB …if you’re swapping like for like … Sky Q to freesat this works perfect, picture is perfect and good around.
I bought this to upgrade my old Freesat box, and I must say it’s definitely a big improvement over the old one, picture quality, and now we can record 3 different things and watch another tv program, so fully recommend
I gave up on Freeview when they recently started reducing the service and reception deteriorated due to mobile phone signals getting stronger. The FreeSat 4K PVR box is a saving grace for channel choice with no monthly bill. I had a Humax 1100S for occasional recording and programme saving, however the Freesat 4K is a big improvement, sporting 4 x simultaneous channel recording and faster response times. (You will need a wide-band Dish).
The only features I miss are padding for overrunning shows and no indication that a recording is taking place when you are watching another recording or live show. The remote control is not as easy to use as the old Humax one so I still use the Humax version which is better for my spatula fingers.
Very simple and easy to connect cables to your tv.
We replaced Sky wit this as Sky was getting silly prices, it was a good call we do not miss Sky at all. The Box records fine and picture is pretty good, the main problem is the poor software and the slowness of the response at times. Sometimes it behaves itself, other times it will run very slowly for scrolling the channels or responding to the remote.
A lot can be improved if they improve the software. Eg if you record a channel and there is an HD version, it gives you the option to record that instead however, the option should be the first choice so you can just click “ok” , who would say no? instead you have to scroll to that choice, so annoying. Finding recordings you have started watching is a pain also its not laid out easy to continue where you left off. With some thought behind their software usage and improvements for speed it will be perfec
Works perfect. My initial concern was that the box would be sluggish (a bit like Freeview built into TVs) but relieved to say its pretty nippy. Picture quality is excellent. Setup as easy as pie – I’m not sure what other reviewers are complaining about, the box walks you through it and its hardly rocket science. Also contrary to some reviews it works PERFECT with an existing Sky Q dish.
Only strange thing is the boxes approach to volume control, which is just plain bizarre, and may cause some issues with certain surround sound setups. But that’s a small issue.
Now saving 71 a month v Sky!
This recordable box is amazingly good. I have been paying for Sky Q for far too long to watch programmes that are available on Freesat for….well….FREE!
The picture quality in HD is as good -if not better- than Sky Q UHD.
The features are excellent although the remote can seem a little ‘sensitive’ but we have got used to doing a quicker press to avoid skipping any sub-menus.
We tuned into 180 TV programmes plus multiple radio stations and we can record 4 separate programmes at the same time and the feature of being able to scroll backwards through the TV guide means you can watch what you’ve missed….amazing.
There are features that are a little different but with practice they soon become obviously simple and straight-forward.
I couldn’t buy from Amazon as they had sold out apart from some price+ units; so I had to go direct to Freesat. The folks at Freesat are extremely helpful if you have any questions.
Our Sky Q contract doesn’t end for another 4 weeks but I am so pleased after setting-up and testing this 2TB Freesat recordable box that I’ve repacked the Sky equipment ready for sending back.
Brilliant machine and with no on-going subscription to pay each and every month it’s a no-brainer.
This is the first review I’ve written and I’ve chosen to do so because I was quite confused after reading the other reviewers – so I hope this helps you decide.
I’d been with sky for a long time but I found I was only really watching the terrestrial channels so I was paying for a lot I wasn’t watching. I went for the 2tb freesat box and after a couple of months I’ve got used to it. It does feel a bit cheaper than sky. The remote isn’t as good as my old sky+ and I’ve had to reset the box once. The menus are a bit clunky but it’s normally just 1 or 2 more clicks than the same thing on sky. Almost all of the same functionality is there – you just have to get used to it being in different places in the menus. The free stat app is actually very good and so I end up using that more for programming the box and seeing what’s coming up on TV with what they call ” showcase ”
So, I’m pleased I made the change to freesat and in not missing the sky direct debit each month. I’d recommend freesat.
Bye bye Sky. Years of wasted money. Get.all the channels I need for nothing.
I have held off from buying Freesat for a while, as every box I have seen has not met my requirements, but this one does and it does it well.
I can now use Amazon Prime, Netflix and most of the other catch up services alongside having Freesat channels and am able to record.
The remote control has an excellent layout, which is very important, and is much better than the offerings from Humax and others.
The box has two inputs from your satelite dish, if you use a standard LNB you will be able to record / play two channels at once, if you have a wideband LNB you’ll be able to do 4.
All in all i’m pleased that I waited for this box, it does everything that I want and need.
Easy to have fitted. The number channels and flexibility of use is great. Picture quality is lovely, very pleased.
Bought to replace our old Humax Free Sat box (which suddenly stopped recording, but it had given long, good service for many years). This box is much smaller and seems to work well, giving a good signal. The recordings are easier to plan and see and we are pleased with the new Freesat box so far.
Bought this to replace our Sky Q after spending 6 years with Sky and our bills nearing the 100 mark.
Ok, this isn’t as sleek or sexy as Sky Q, but when it costs the same as 2.5 months sky bill we are still looking to save almost 1k a year.
We realised we just weren’t watching any sky channels anymore, and 99% of everything we do watch is on free to air channels. So what are we paying all that money for?
So we made to the jump to Freesat and it’s great. It has worked flawlessly with the Sky Q connections and was a breeze to set up.
The fact I’m nearly 100 a month better off and have hardly lost any functionality is fantastic.
Very happy.
Bought this to replace the overpriced service for Sky Q. Lots of good functionality but the menu system is really slow and clunky in comparison to Sky Q. The box is virtually plug and play if you have had Sky Q and your satellite dish has a wideband launcher.
Ignore the negative comments regarding this box most would have trouble operating a light switch
This is a great replacement for the outdated humax box, easy to set up and use with the added benefit of the freesat app so you can set Reminders or record your favourite programs whilst you are out,it has a good and easy to use TV guide, pause and rewind live tv great on demand content ie netflix prime video YouTube and so much more
Great little package for a great price
it was easy to install was disapointed in movies selection quite ancie
Great piece of kit for the money. So good I now have two.
It does everything the Sky Q box did, except for Sky channels, but without the sky high monthly cost.
I love it!
wife was always running out of space on her old one
There is nothing to complain about for this Freesat recorder/player although it takes a little while to get used to at first.
It is the perfect replacement for those looking to replace the older Humax recorders for those of us with satellite dishes, especially in areas where the reception using a standard antenna is less than reliable for many of the channels like the area I live in.
Picture quality is very good on all available channels in our area, whereas our second television using a conventional antenna is very flaky or even non-existent on a lot of channels.
You may have a shock when you receive it, as it is tiny compared to the Humax ones!
This unit works well, picture quality is good using a 55″ Hisense smart TV. Haven’t used the recording capability yet but will do at some point.
Far from others commenting on how poor this box is, I find it easy to use and great replacement for Sky who are becoming far too expensive. OK, you can’t get all the sky channels, but for what I watch, it was perfect. Can record radio channels, something not easily available on sky, can transfer on to PC so that I can watch my favourite programs on the go, grea
Got to replace my Humax Freesat box which was still working fine but was replacing TV so decided to change Freesat Box as well at same time as was impressed with the way the Freesat box could record 4 programmes at once.
Outstanding product. Delivered early and very easy to set up.
Migrated from Sky + HD as Sky box gave up the ghost. Sky wanted an arm/leg to sort things despite over 2 decades being a user. Pleasantly surprised (in view of many poor reviews) on the Freesat 2tb box. Fulfilled by Amazon so delivery fast.
Easy to set up (just follow on screen instructions) as well as sign into various apps. I use iPlayer, Netflix, Prime, YouTube. Probably 10 minutes to set up. Setting up recordings easy and intuitive.
Nice being able to back on the EPG by a week and record stuff (obviously via On Demand). Video quality is good (I use a 4k Sony). Main issue is that the Freesat box can, at times, be quite slow to respond to remote instructions which can get confused once the remote instructions catches up with itself.
Speaking of the remote the keys are quite tiny so take care. Also there does not seem replacement remotes available from Freesat or indeed from third party sellers.
Very easy to install. Quite different from the sky box we had but we are very pleased with it once we got used to working it.
Picture quality is far superior to that of sky q even in SD. There does not seem to be a way of installing apps of your choice, however with apps like BBC i player My 5 and Netflix there is lots to watch. Amazon Prime Video app is temperamental and is better used directly from your Smart TV.
We got this to replace our old Humax Freesat box (which is still going strong, but is now in the kitchen). It’s a lot smaller and lighter than the Humax, but seems solid enough. It also starts up more quickly, which was always an annoyance with the Humax, so that’s good. The UI has been refreshed, but works much the same as before. Picture quality is fine, but no-one is broadcasting in 4K so I can’t really judge the 4K part. It seems to upscale ok though. The remote seems to work a bit better, the old Humax sometimes missed button presses.
Love it, simple and straightforward to use. Excellent picture quality.
Switched from sky plus to this box. The interface is a bit clunky compared to sky but the picture is great. Several HD channels. It prompts you when you record to ask if you want to record in HD. It also prompts you if you’re watching live TV in sd when the same channel is available in HD. Very easy to use. We got the 2tb model. Haven’t used more than 10% yet. Possibly because we haven’t been on holiday! We’re saving about 30 a month so it’ll have paid for itself by now. We use it to access all the freesat channels and also on demand and amazon prime. It doesn’t have all4 yet but we can get that on our cheap 20 roku stick if we want. We could use it for Netflix too if we wanted to. Curiously they don’t sell additional remotes so I had to buy a compatible one instead.
Works well and automatically updated firmware once installed. Excellent product if you have satellite dish antenna cables from your previous subscription.
Bought this as a replacement for my previous Humax box.
I’ve had FreeSat since 2009 and have been very happy with the service.
This box, although not perfect is good.
Picture quality is great, it has all the usual streaming services including Netflix, Prime and BritBox, unfortunately no Disney+
It’s easy to connect and set up.
In the first few days box seemed slow and didn’t really work as expected, however, now it is working perfectly I assume it’s had an update.
Only issue I have is the remote, buttons a bit small so easy to touch 2 buttons by mistake.
Other than that, very happy.
I got this because I was fed up of paying extortionate money to Sky. We had SkyQ, which has 2 connectors from the wall and this works perfectly fine with this box. It certainly feels a bit more “clunky” in the interface, but not bad at all. It took a while to go through the update cycle – and you potentially need to be patient and let it “get on with it” if that happens. The glaring issue is lack of Channel 4 on demand services built in. I’m not too disappointed as it may come back and I can get elsewhere (but it was a surprise). In summary, not as slick – if you are used to Sky. But I’d rather be free from the monthly bills that keep going up!
Not easy to set up
Would be better to have the full manual
Brilliant piece of kit.Easy to set up and use.
Just replaced faulty Humax box with new Freesat 4K TV box with 2T recordable storage. More storage than you can shake a remote at. Simple to install, just unplug old box and connect satellite cables (2 of) to new box. Plug in HDMI cable and power lead, put supplied batteries into the new Freesat remote and switch on. Enter your postcode and the box searches for all the Freesat channels in your area. The quick start guide that comes with the new box is easy to follow, with simple clear instructions and diagrams. If you want the Freesat App the instructions about registration are clear. Then you can set up recordings via your mobile phone if you forgot to set them up at home. Picture quality and sound excellent. On demand opens the on demand menu which allows you to jump straight to your favourite player. Also BBC iplayer, Itvhub and NetFlix buttons. This is a fantastic piece of kit, very pleased to give it 5 Stars. Thank you Freesat.
freest box is just the job for all you need to watch tv
I bought this to replace an ageing Panasonic Freesat recorder that has served me well for many years. First thing I noticed is how much faster the interface is – the Panasonic took ages to navigate around, and to start up – this is so much better. After a few week’s use I’m happy with the picture quality in HD, the sound and most of the functionality. Where the Panasonic used to track delayed programs (at least on BBC channels), this one starts recording at the published time, but continues up to the broadcast end of the program, in the particular test case it had 30 minutes of football on the front of the whole of the required program. Not sure what it will do if the program is moved to another channel or postponed to another day – probably have to wait for Wimbledon to return to see what happens! Some better documentation of the features would be useful, as I have discovered some things by accident. On the final step of deleting a recording it would be useful to have the program name confirmed. Overall though, very good with loads of storage (2TB version).
This was purchased to replace my Humax 1100 PVR which was fantastic in every way except that the hard disc was prone to crashing and Humax fell out with Freesat and stopped making it. This Freesat box is not as easy to use at the Humax box but the net effect is the sam. Differences are: 1. Menus are annoying and not as easy as Humax. The controller is annoying as the select button often gets pressed along with the menu select ring (Grrr!). The picture is great, however and one thing is better than Humax – you can record four channels at the same time (from two input cables – clever that!). Also annoying is that there is no “current channel” LCD on the front, so you have to use the controller to see what channel you are on. Still – it’s a great buy and I am getting used to it now but given the chance to go back to my Humax box, I would swap it in an instant!
My old freesat box finally decided it had had enough so I replaced it with the new 4k freesat box.
Really pleased with it (once I got the hang of it ) ( was use to the old format). Lots of more features that the old box didn’t have. I’m still discovering different functions that this box has. If your more tech savvy then it will be a walk in the park to use . On the whole though really please with this product and would recommend .
This is potentially a great little piece of tech. There have however been problems. I had to ring customer support to report that the box was not working well. I was advised to factory reset the box. It worked but I lost all my recordings. It also occasionally records using iplayer which necessitates a restart which cures the problem. If these small glitches continue I shall have to get back in touch with freesat customer service. I don’t completely trust it to work always. It is, when working, very useful but it doesn’t always work just 98% or thereabouts of the time. Buy it but beware. The handset is fiddly and a nightmare for me to use.
Bought to replace a Humax box after it’s hard drive no longer functioned. Could not find a current Humax box so went with the Freesat and I am glad I did. It’s neat, easy to install and use plus Amazon Prime is now available in the ‘on demand’ function so I don’t have to keep switching hdmi inputs.
This was perfect the signal better than sky and more programs especially Netflix all free so I have saved over 100 a month
Overall the system works satisfactorily.
Scope for improvement on: – ease of use – process, should not need periodic resetting:
– instructions – clearer, more easily available (e.g. setting tv controls on handset);
– improve list of channels
This is a really good product the only thing not so good for me and a lot of over 80’s is the small buttons on the remote when you have arthritic fingers/hands
Easy to tune in the box and great to have the four recordings. You must ensure that you have a wideband LNB to enable you to use the box to its full capacity. A great buy.
Top quality upgrade from the previous Humax box. Our old beloved humax freesat is running slow, we love it like an old friend but she’s running outdated software yet still does the Job.
Our new Freesat 4 k 2TB box arrived this week. Findings
Will work with old v3 sky dish running two lnb outputs to provide 2 Recordable and one watchable channel simultaneously. Just like the old freesat. Or use a new wideband Q lnb on v4 sky dish will run to 4 Recordable channels. For me 2 is plenty. The difference now is the picture quality has improved, very clear picture, better colours with progression scan that’s now 1080p compared to 1080i on the old humax it’s very nice on the eyes.
Remote contral direct links to bbc itv you tube and Netflix all work flawlessly. Standby to switch on is 2 seconds. Program guide population 2-3 seconds. Wi-Fi to stream is excellent not a single drop out. I love utube so this is a perfect way to watch.
No fan noise. 1 hdmi that syncs sound via optical output for sound system no need to adjust delay.
When you switch on set up the Wi fi and leave for 10 mins to download new firmware then continue with postcode. Put postcode in separately not one full address eg M27 5YP is correct but not M275YP it won’t find.
The recordings are easy to make and have options to auto delete or archive very handy.
I have has not issues whatsoever with the box but I have read every word of the instruction pdf twice so if you read a bad review on this box don’t always assume it’s correct. 100%recommended.
This is a great product, I have the 2Tb version connected to my Samsung TV and Denon home theater.
It’s easy to set up and use, it does exactly what I wanted it to do. Recording and playback is easy once you get used to the remote.
The on demand things work well too.
Finally decided to leave Sky and its ever increasing costs. Very nervous as do not really understand all the tech info given but decided to give Freesat a go as they seemed to offer the channels we watch and we already had Netflix. The package arrived in a couple of days and was well packed. We had to give 30 days notice to sky so left it until the last minute to change over. The instructions were easy to follow and I would say I had it set up and using within 10 minutes. Love the fact that we can access Netflix from the remote. We are getting used to the remote and it has all the features we used on Sky The only thing Im not happy with is that the screen changes size on some programmes but the quality of the HD more than makes up for it. We are only 24 hours in but extremely happy with this Free box and would not hesitate to recommend.
It’s fantastic and easy to use.it’s well worth buying.1 only problem is that you can’t set recordings while you are watching a recorded program but apart from that it’s really great for free tv.
I bought this Freesat Recorder to avoid paying for a satellite TV subscription as I don’t watch that much TV plus I wanted to be able to record programmes. As I see it these are the pros and areas for development of this Freesat recorder –
Pros
– Slim, compact unit and neutral grey colour blends in.
– Easy setup and connection to Wi-Fi.
– Surprisingly wide range of free channels – my unit picked up over 160 stations.
– Simple interface and easy to master remote which can be programmed to control basic TV functions.
– Easy access to UK support by web, chat or phone.
– Recording is easy to set via the clear programme guide plus there’s a series record feature.
– Picture quality and audio are generally quite good.
– I like the feature where if you select a standard definition channel and the same programme is being transmitted in HD an on-screen prompt appears which can transfer you to the HD version.
– Seems reliable and will record two programmes at a time on a standard LNB and up to 4 with a wideband version.
– Software updates seem well supported.
– A companion app for Apple and Android which allows remote programming etc. is available.
Areas for development
– No obvious indication that recording is taking place on the front of the recorder.
– Some buttons on the remote are are a bit small such as TV on and fast forward/reverse.
– Would like to be able to zoom out programme guide rather than having to scroll along to see anything other than the next programme or two.
– No Dolby sound — only stereo or surround settings.
– No Amazon Prime Video built-in but I hear it’s work in progress.
– You can’t receive Channel 4 HD but that is due to a dispute between satellite TV providers rather than the recorder.
Reading some of the negative reviews here I had this unit in and out of my basket several times before finally pulling the trigger and ordering. I’d have to say that my experience of the unit has been positive. It replaces a Humax which had given up the ghost and suffers by comparison only in the absence of a ‘skip forward by x amount’ button (ff works fine). I tinkered with remote record via app and can’t even remember if I got it working, it’s a pretty inconsequential thing to me, especially with so much available on catch up.
This was bought to replace our aging Humax which had become unstable after many years of service. This smaller, and lighter unit is remarkably capable. The picture quality in HD is very good and the remote, although different and a tad confusing at times works OK. I would have preferred it if it was backlit, as the dedicate BBC i-player and Netflix buttons etc. are a joy to use. Though it was easy enough to set it up on our Harmony remote, which is backlit.
Time will tell if it works out to be a good buy, but so far, so good.
Replacement box because my old box had died.Easy to set upbut has an annoying “connected to wifi” message that pops up every half hour or so when you are watching programmes@
Apartfrom this a good box.
very discreet and durable. worth the money if you want everything.
Easy to set up, app is a little bit clunky but works. Only slight niggle is no channel4 in HD available.
Had for a few days now and have had no glitches. Seems easy to use. Easy to record. If you pick on something in SD it even asks you if you want to record in HD. Only gave 4 stars because of price. Changed over from Virgin as was spending loads every month for only watching 5 or 6 channels. Liked the buttons on the control for iPlayer, itv hub, Netflix and on demand. Nice touch and works quicker than virgin. Control well layed out and feels comfortable in your hand. When your in the TV guide you can still see the program on in the top right corner as you do in virgin.
All in all very impressed up to now and would recommend
Wow the worst remote control EVER, who designed this thing. Really easy to hit the wrong button then you have to start all over again, you must have a bright light on when using THIS THING. Shame because the box works well. Would recommend looking at other makes
An easy to use recordable Freesat TV box. I bought this to replace my broken Humax and have been pleased with it. Clear user interface and simple to install/set up, I’d recommend Arris as a manufacturer and Amazon as a market place.
Cancelled my SkyQ TV Package got too expensive and replaced it with this freesat box. As the dish is still in place with a quad LNB just had to connect the two cables, HDMI Lead and power, following a few on screen instructions, installation completed in just a few minutes. Great picture and recording is easy.
Currently got EE TV box which is freeview with some apps on it, it ends in March 2021. Got a freesat LG TV recently, never had it before, easily better than freeview. Have bought this recorder, arrives tomorrow.
Bought for my father, he loves it, 4 simultaneous recordings and the HD stuff looks great.
It seems well constructed and very easy to set up.Tje best bit is you can record upto 4 channels at once and pause and rewind live TV like sky but without any subscription charge .
The box is well packaged and comes with all you need to get going.
I read several reviews. Many commented on glithes with recording / playback, but I have not experienced any yet. The recorder is easy to use, the playback works ok and the tv side works fine, but, some of the menu navigation seems to take a step or two more than expected, but you do get used to it.
It is frustrating that you cannot set the channel view to a time-line view without having to press the navigation keys each time.
I have now lived with this for a while – the general feel is good. The record and playback is fine – I have not had any recording hicups yet, however, when the machine is in standby, there is a constant purring from the machine as if the hard drive is spinning – it is only a small noise, but it is there nonetheless.
It is disappointing that there is no slow motion available. All HDRs I have previously used allow the pause and super-slow-motion playback, this unit does not and it is frustrating as hell, as is the need to use the navigation keys to clear the playback info from the screen whenever you do hit pause.
The playback of recordings works ok, however, to stop viewing and delete is a multi-input task, there should be a single step deletion, again, frustrating as not necessary on other HDRs.
However, it does do what it says it will do, and does so as a neat little unit.
Very easy to set up and worked perfectly, easy to use with intuitive remote control.
Compact size , in use for 1 Week now and very happy with i
Excellent Freesat recordable box very easy to setup and being able to record multiple programs at the same time is extremely useful. Highly recommend this .
