We saw some YouTube videos where these specifically were recommended so we tried one. These are worth the money and deserve the reviews and referrals! Best hand-held gardening shears we have or have ever had. Does everything you’d expect shears to do (comfortable, locking, etc.). And more! They are very sharp and the cutting action is smooth. If you need good shears, these will be hard to beat.

I’ve had a lot of pruners in my garden area and these are by far one of the best ones I’ve ever had. They are well made, sturdy, very sharp and cuts like a razor through butter.
I like that it can be adjusted and easily sharpened.
I would be nice to have a few just in case I misplaced or loose it like I do with the others.

I am a fan of both Felco and Corona gardening tools. Both are high quality, Felco being better IMO.
These shears are every bit as good as similar Felco shears, but at a much better price. Japanese steel is strong and stays sharp. These are clean cuts and smooth. I really enjoy their ergonomics and they ease and security of the latching mechanism. Flawless. I’m buying 2 more as gifts for my gardening adult children.
So yeah, I recommend them. 😉

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSuper sharp and very well made. These are my first true “pro quality” shears. I have Fiskars and some nice “pro” stainless, and Corona BP7200. None stack up to these, especially at the price. Never tried a Felco, but I’d find it hard to believe they would be superior to these and at half the price.
Love the SK5 steel. Makes me feel like Doug Marcaida when I use these. I keep saying “it will cut!” In my head when using.
The silver is slightly larger than the red/black handle and has a different spring. They are very comfortable and I have med-large hands.

These are big shears! I am small but can easily handle most shears–so I didn’t pay attention to the size description. I can handle these and like them so much that I am also ordering the smaller size for work in smaller spaces.

I have severe osteoarthritis in my hands and have had a few surgeries on them. I am still compelled to work in and enjoy my garden.
I’ve learned as I developed this hand crippling condition that good tools can help level the playing field. Especially now when hand strength and dexterity is simply not an option.
This tool is one of those. What makes it especially useful is that I can afford to buy it. Since crippled hands have devastated my earning capacity. Thank you very much for an excellent and affordable tool.

Really nice quality, well made pruning shears. I have only been pruning roses, grape vines and shrubs, so not used on really thick wood yet. They are easy to hold and take very little pressure to cut the thicker vines. I feel these will be used a lot for hopefully a lot of years.

Smooth surface helps to keep it clean. Once the release button that opens the scissors is adjusted to the center, it is ready to quick release and operation. Seems rust-proof, which is necessary to keep end of grafting cutting more hygienic. Cuts precisely how you wanted without causing much cracking or damage to scion shaft. Very ergonomic, fits contour of ones palm more naturally, so that there is no need for fingers maneuver uncomfortably during cutting process. Overall pretty comfortable. You should not be dissatisfied with the results.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersMy other more expensive pruning shears had difficulty cutting small branches ranging between a pencil thick and a Sharpie thick. While it can be used to prune other tiny twigs and green stems, my plants are getting bigger and thicker that I should prepare for the more heavy duty tasks as well. So finally I decided to purchase this Made in Japan shears with a very affordable price. Unlike many other reviews that mention about an included spare spring, mine did not come with that.

I ordered a normal size one and it is comfortable to grab, even though my hands are on the smaller side. The shears cut through the small pear tree twigs easily. I daringly tried to cut a bamboo stake (which was a bit too long for my use) and it was a breeze. I am satisfied with its performance.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have been trying to find good quality pruning shears for a while and tried products from several very popular bands but I have been very disappointed in the build quality and usability of their shears. I tried these lesser known Tonma shears because they were made in Japan and seemed high quality. Using them in the garden today, I am very impressed! Very attractive in appearance, they fit well in my hand (a medium male hand), and are very sharp. I had no difficulty in cutting either small or moderate sized branches.

I have some other Japanese made stuff and it’s all wonderful, so I decided to use the same formula and look for “made in Japan” shears. These are much nicer than most hand-held shears I’ve used. The blades are great quality and cut well. The spring is a better style then the usual type and should last much longer. Prunes small branches and twigs with ease and a neat cut.

This is a great set of shears because they close like regular scissors with the handle perpendicular to the ground. It makes it that much easier to clip grass and cut weeds. The blades are very sharp and clean easily. The safety clip is a great bonus.

  48. KerrieRawson says:

Came incredibly sharp, they handle ” branches easily with a bit of persuasion. The steel is holding up nicely, I’ve not had to sharpen them after a few weeks decent use.
A long session will see them sticking from accumulated sap, but a quick rinse sees them performing nicely again.
    A good value purchase.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersThese are well executed and cut superb. The only issue that will arise sooner or later, is that you will lose the spring in the heat of battle. An extra spring is provided, but so what, you will eventually lose that too. I lost the spring on mine the first day when tossing them into my garden cart and they hit the side and fell to the ground. I simply put a dab of 5 minute epoxy on both ends of the spring and reinserted it. Problem was solved!. I can’t believe this wasn’t done at the factory. Otherwise a nice working (and looking) tool from Japan.

Sharp enough to cut hair. Like the sliding lock instead of cheap metal loop on others. Cuts like butter on most branches within the specified range.

I ordered these bypass garden shears to go along with a new set of gardening tools. The new set included a pair of anvil-type pruning shears, but those I could tell wouldn’t be as sharp or as heavy duty as these bypass-type shears. These shears are definitely a step up; I am so glad I supplemented my new tool set with these.

These shears are more heavy duty, and the scissor-style bypass blades give you cleaner cuts and are less likely to crush or damage your plants’ stems. The blades are Japanese made of steel and are also stronger and will be less prone to bend or break when used on thicker or more woody stems or branches, which is what has happened with some of my old anvil-type shears. I have been limiting my anvil-type shears to tender flower stems and very skinny vines or new growth, while I have been using these bypass shears for bigger jobs such as pruning back small bushes and cutting out woody growth as opposed to tender new growth. Google “anvil pruners vs. bypass pruners” and you will learn a lot about how much better bypass pruners are.

Do keep in mind these are garden pruning shears, not tree trimmers. They will have their size limit. The seller recommends they can cut branches up to one inch in diameter but I have not tried them on anything that large yet. What I have used them on so far, probably as large as about a half inch, they have worked very well, excellent in fact. They also feel great in your hand and are easy to hold and use. The locking mechanism works well and is a good safety feature.

Overall these are a sharp, sturdy and hard-working pair of bypass shears. For the price the seller is offering these as of this review, they are a bargain. Throw away your cheapo anvil-type shears and get some of these, they are such a huge improvement. You will be glad you did.

I’m an avid gardener and have over 20 roses bushes that I spend an entire weekend pruning. I accidentally left my tools out in the open one weekend and didn’t expect rain, but it did and I forgot about my tools. Later in the week when it stopped raining I went out and saw that most of my tools were rusted. I needed a new pruner badly. I’m glad I got this pruner because it is so much more comfortable and sharper than my previous tools. It cuts through my rose branches with ease and I like that the locking mechanism isn’t in the way. With my old pruner, the locking latch was near the spring and often times it would lock up in the midst of pruning which was annoying. With this tool, it feels heavy duty and something professionals would use. Definitely recommend this one.

I really like the spring action of these pruners; they felt very comfortable in my hands and did not add a lot of pressure to my thumb and index finger while using them. The cut was clean and without using much force and effort indicating a sharp blade. They also have a easy to use locking mechanism. I can see these becoming my favorite pruners.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe handles of these pruning shears aren’t metal but a sturdy plastic. After using them, I prefer this style of handle! Trimming back the berry canes is easier once they have gone dormant for the winter, and the plastic handles don’t hold the cold as metal ones would. They are also curved to be comfortable in your hand.
The locking mechanism is also easy to work and feels secure. It won’t pop open by accident in the drawer, and I don’t think my five-year-old will figure out how to undo it, so that makes me feel a little safer.
While these worked well with the berry canes and similar sized branches on the bushes and trees, I don’t know if I’d want to try something 1″ thick.

Good for use on colder days

This is an excellent set of made-in-Japan bypass pruners. They look and feel like a premium product sold at a higher price, with nice details like an easy-to-operate thumb lock and well-curved and comfortable handles, as well as an extra return spring thoughtfully tucked into the packaging. The packaging is Japanese-market and almost entirely Japanese-language; the actual brand of the tool (as opposed to the Amazon reseller) is YKHM, apparently a Yokohama-based producer of scissors that sells into other Asian markets but not the US. I’m looking forward to many years of use from these.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese sheers are high quality. One cutting blade is like a scissor. The other cutting blade has the edge of a knife. Be careful with these! It could go without saying that cutting plant stems is effortless. Due to it’s design, it should remain fairly easy to cut even as the blade dulls. And the blade can always be resharpened. They look slippery and cold to the touch in the pictures, but they’re actually quite comfortable. The handles are painted in silver metal flake with a non-slip soft clear coating. Great shears! I don’t see them wearing out anytime soon.

They are slightly on the larger side and open a little wider than others but are comfortable to use. I like the colour too. They feel sturdy to use, rugged but precise. However the spring came out once as it’s just held in by opposing force. I popped it back in and will just hope it doesn’t happen again. Still going strong. Best kept clean and oiled (rapeseed).

The only thing I don’t like is the counter-blade tip extends slightly further than the sharp blade tip. This is a little less than ideal when cutting Ivy against a fence for example and I want the tips to cut flush with the surface. (One star off for that otherwise would be five). Other than that I’m happy with my purchase and would buy another.

These are good quality for the price. I would recommend them.

My wife does most of the gardening. Unless there’s an opportunity to use a power tool, I’m not interested. (That’s only a slight exaggeration.)

She reports that these shears are sharp, they cut well, and they are comfortable to hold.

As someone who uses a lot of high-quality hand tools, my impression is that these shears are well-designed and nicely crafted. I expect these will prove durable. The design is such that I will be able to sharpen and otherwise maintain them as needed.

The price is very reasonable for tool of this quality.

Hard to say if the blades are truly made in Japan, but they are extremely sharp and the internal edges oiled right out of the package. They do a really good job on smaller tree limbs and the handles have a nice shape / feel to them. I use these to trim willow trees, so nothing more than about 1/2″ diameter. There’s a good quality safety latch on one side to keep the blades closed when not in use. It comes with a spare return spring as well.

These are good for pruning, cut cleanly, and the handles are very comfortable.

    Problems are:
Safety catch does not guarantee the pruners stay closed. I had the catch on, and squeezed the handles several times (not really intentionally, more of just fiddling while I was standing around). The catch unlatched and the shears popped open. Don’t trust the catch

One ends of the shears is sharp on the non cutting surface. Cut my hand on it.

Packaging’s instructions are in another language (Japanese, I think). There is a confusion, the box is marked “Made in China” and the shears are marked “Made in Japan”. I would have liked to have the care instructions.

With a large veggie garden, orchard, and lots of roses, pruners are essential equipment for me. These are 8-inches long, a good size. I can get all the leverage I need with the comfortable handles. The blades are sharp! That’s important. These cut cleanly through.

You also get a spare spring with this set, easy to replace “if and when.”

    Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese TONMA Pruning Shears are amazing. I have been a small plot, urban gardener for years and these are the best pruners I have ever used. Amazingly comfortable considering the handles are metal. They are beautifully designed in the Japanese style, incredibly well manufactured and finished. It is obvious that these pruners will hold up through years of use. I am so so happy with this item thank you…!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese shears are comfortable although the handles are not padded. The design is ergonomic as advertised, and don’t make your hands sore even with a lot of pruning work. An extra replacement spring was included. So far the safely lock clip has stayed effective. It has a button toggle design. Most pruning shears I have tried have issues with the lock getting sticky, either not closing fully or becoming hard to open, but this design seems like it will be longer lasting. They cut easily through woody stems up to about the 1/2 inch diameter I have used them for (okra stalks, raspberry canes, pepper plant stalks). The action could be smoother, but other than that I am pleased with these pruners. And am hoping the stainless steel will not rust, like other pruners I have tried.

    FYI
The shears had a “made in Japan” sticker on them, but also “made in china” sticker on the box.

Golden Review Award: 55 From Our UsersFor the money, these seem like excellent, sharp, well made pruning shears that look like they should last a long time with proper care. The only possible issue I see is the locking mechanism, which seems to come unlocked too easily and might possibly pose a danger if not handled carefully.
I deducted one star because, as pictured, the product card is printed “MADE IN JAPAN”, but the barcode sticker right above this clearly says “MADE IN CHINA”. Very confusing… perhaps Tonma can clarify???

    Nice shears. Confusing, contradictory packaging.

    Highly recommended.

The shears have a slightly curved handle that’s very comfortable. All metal construction. The spring tension is excellent. The blade is Made in Japan. It’s feels great and cuts clean. There’s a locking mechanism to keep the shears closed.

The packaging is branded for the Japanese market. It comes with an extra spring but I hope I don’t lose it before the first one goes missing.

    Sharp awesome cutting shears

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs far as I think these are good. You can see in the picture random pieces from different materials. The biggest about 7/8ths of an inch in diameter. A real tough woody vine. The others a berry bush branch, and two roots. The biggest root piece was about 3/4ths of an inch. Roots in general are much denser than branches. All of the cuts made even on the bigger pieces were fairly easy. These shears are vey sharp. A good edge. It doesn’t really crush the cuts like some I have used in the past. I like the locking mechanism. It doesn’t get loose like others I have had. It has a nice sort of flat spring to keep the lock it in place. The handles are ergonomic fits nice in the hands. Only thing I would change would be to add more grip to the handles their a smooth finish. As well I found looking in other places nearly identical shears going for over 25$. At the price of 15.97$ I think it is a very fair deal. On a separate note the packaging was all in Japanese writing I think. I would of liked to read some of it. Also the box and packaging smelled like kitty litter or fabric softener. Nothing wrong about that but I just thought it was funny.

I am pleasantly surprised by how much I really like these bypass pruners. The blade and hook (anvil) are of high quality steel, the blade arriving brilliant, with a clean, sharp bevel — these are ready to go right out of the package. They are my new go-to bypass pruners, comparable to pruners twice the price. I’ve used them a few times already, cutting post-harvest cannabis plants up for my compost pile and they have been spectacular.

Replacement parts may be hard to come by, if at all — that would be my only concern worth mentioning. But they do come with an extra spring, so at least there’s that. And the blade can be maintained with a file as needed.

I have hands on the smaller side for a man — I usually wear a men’s medium or, depending on the make, a small leather work glove — and these are entirely comfortable in my hand. The pruners are by no means small, but they don’t open more than is comfortable, while still being able to cut inch without strain (1 inch may be a bit of a stretch in most cases).

These shears are just as sharp as described. They did a fine job on all my gardening trimming and pruning up to large branches, but that’s not what these are for. I wish they had some padding on the handles, but otherwise, they performed well.

I use these as my knock around, have handy set. I have another set of a much better much more ergonomic set but would rather not have those get banged up. This set, I don’t really care and it is handy to have a set around. This cut well, are a bit cold in the hand due to no grips. Time will tell if they are sturdy enough to not spring.

These are beautiful shears that have held up to a good deal of punishment. I was able to easily cut thru limbs of about 1″ in diameter on our Japanese maple trees. We even blasted through much larger branches but it took two hands quite a bit of leverage, but the blades held up.

The TONMA shears remind me of the Will’s Sword shears we purchased about two years ago, and those have been amazing as well.

If you want a basic pair of clippers, that will hold up over time, these are a good choice. However, there are a couple of things that keep them from being excellent.

The first thing that could be improved is the grip. The handles are just metal. While that’s better than cheap plastic, it does leave you wishing it had the grippy, soft rubber that you find on others.

The other issue is the locking mechanism. This one has an odd cylinder that you slide up or down. The spring loaded leaver you find on other models works much better.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersSK5 is a nice Japanese steel for this application, tough, keeps its edge pretty well, and it’s not expensive. It doesn’t have high corrosion resistance, so you do need to make sure it’s kept dry while not in use, with oil for best results.

These came sharp and ready. SK5 can be quite hard, so I don’t know how easy it will be to sharpen these eventually, but it should be possible.

They can cut green wood up to 1″ as advertised, if it’s soft. Dry wood is hopeless at that size, but that’s typical for hand pruners.

They don’t open as much as my Coronas, barely enough to accept the 1″ size branch. The Coronas open almost twice as wide, which makes cutting large pieces easier, as you can get the branch further into the blades for better leverage.

There is one advantage of not opening as wide: the handles don’t get so far apart that I can’t keep both in my hand. That does happen with my Coronas.

These are distinctly lighter than my Corona hand pruners. That means they’re less heavy duty in some ways, but they seem to be as sturdy as I’ll need.

The metal handles are well shaped for comfort, though they’re not as comfortable for high pressure as rubber grips.

The button latch works well and easily with one hand while holding the shears in working fashion. You have to press the handles together just a little to open it, which is how it should be for safety.

They come with a replacement spring, just in case. They didn’t come with a pair of gloves as someone else mentioned.

Just over 8-1/2″ long, a bit under 3″ wide, a little under 1″ thick (counting the main bolt). The cutting surface of the blade is 2-5/16″ measured straight.

    Made in Japan.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese scissors are industrial strength, and really do a job on mature plants and smaller tree limbs. Easy for a woman to handle to get the pruning done. Comfortable to work with, and very satisfying to see how well these work. They’re a bit heavier than other pruning scissors, but make up for it in the job they do. Good choice.
