I’ve had the watch for a month now so thought I’d leave a review because I spent ages trying to research these before buying it. I bought this as a replacement for an Apple watch S5. For me, I got fed up with the stock apple watch faces and tbh was finding the screen increasingly difficult to read given my eyesight and the amount of information the Apple Watch crams on there. I also wasn’t that bothered about being able to run apps on the watch itself.
So its important to recognise that the GTR3 Pro is a fundamentally different proposition to the AW – for me, its essentially a watch that also tracks activity and can notify you. The interactions flow one way, from your phone to watch rather than back and forth as you’d get with an AW. So while, for example, WhatsApp does come through you can’t reply using the watch. Along the same lines, the Zepp app gives you a weather ‘app’ that shows on the watch but you can’t download other apps (e.g Dark Sky) to the watch itself. A lot of the reviews I came across see this as some sort of problem but for me tbh it’s absolutely fine. I just don’t get why you would want to reply to a text using your watch – the screen is tiny and lets be honest Siri is an embarrassment. It is however, really handy actually seeing a text on the watch so you know what’s come in. This is where the GTR excels – for example, you can control the music playing on your phone using the watch (as well as downloading music too it) which is basically where I play music from. I’ve tried the Spotify app on a watch and its terrible so not being able to do that is no great loss. I’d say that the GTR has enough of the smart features to make it a very useful addition to your phone while not being able to replace it. Which is fine for me. One thing I have genuinely missed is apple pay. The GTR doesn’t support NFC so no apple wallet equivalent. I just use my phone instead so while I miss the feature it really is a first world problem.
Where this lack of ‘smart’ functionality gives a definite advantage is in battery life. I’ve given the watch 4 stars purely because I felt that Amazfit over promise what you’ll get. I don’t know why they do this because the battery life is exceptional. My AW lasted less than a day so sleep tracking was a non starter. Plus if I forgot to charge it for at least 2 hours it wouldn’t see the day out. The GTR lasts me 4 to 5 days on a full charge. This is significantly less than the quoted times you read in the adverts though. I tend to use the watch’s GPS a lot (daily walk and run 2 to 3 times a week) so you might get longer but its still a long way short of the 10+ days advertised. Don’t get me wrong though, 4 – 5 days is amazing and means that sleep tracking is entirely possible, as is always on display watch faces along with heavy GPS use with no worries about the watch dying on you.
The screen is fantastic. Its AMOLED so the contrast is great and its very bright. I’ve had no problems seeing it in bright sunlight and the light sensor works well dimming it when required. Its got a theatre mode and you can turn the lift to wake function off at night so overall the screen works well. I’ve had a couple of random notifications when DND has been turned on but these are very rare and I’m not 100% sure its more an issue with my iPhone than with the watch. It has a silent alarm and a torch function so its does the job well. It also gives you the opportunity to download and swap out the watch faces. There are nearly 200 in the Zepp app, all free. I think its very much personal taste so some I really like and some I hate. There’s going to be something for everyone in there. You can also download Amazfaces which currently has about 600 more faces for the GTR3 Pro. That’s loads less than a lot of the other models but again, these are all free and as you’d expect if you want to make your watch look like a Tag or a Rolex you can do. Some of these faces look really crap but some are actually very good, better than the stock ones IMO. Again, I really like being able to tinker and change the look and feel of the watch so this is a real bonus for me. Again, unlike the AW I’d say the focus of most of the watch faces is on telling the time so I would say that faces with complications are not as common. There is less scope because there are less apps installed so it tends to be battery, weather, heart rate, steps and calories that appear most often.
The software on the watch works very well. I haven’t had a crash or lock up at all (better than the AW in that regard) although I do occasionally restart the watch if it gets sluggish. This is a very quick process because the watch isn’t really running any apps as such so it isn’t a big deal. The software is well laid out, it customisable and makes good use of the two physical buttons for navigation. It isn’t without faults though. Nothing serious and more quirks than bugs but there are a few. For example, when you set an exercise going you can’t get back to the main face or other apps. You either keep the session running or you end it … unless you forget to set DND at which point the exercise session is interrupted by the notification. The session is still running in the background so nothing is lost but this behaviour is clearly a bug, albeit a positive one. All in all, the software works really well PLUS you can see pretty much all of the information the watch stores on the watch itself. The screen is big enough to support this as well so you can actually read it and make sense of it.
Exercise tracking is fantastic. There are loads of exercises and it gives consistent results in terms of HR and calorie burn. I measured it side by side with my AW and it was within a couple of beats for my average HR over a 30 minute run. I find that it is more generous with the calorie burn when exercising (AW would show about 360 calories for a 30 minute HIIT session, this shows about 380) but is a lot less generous with day to day calorie burn. The AW gave you ‘exercise’ calories for just about anything. This doesn’t. Which IMO is a lot better. The stand hours feature is a good example, with the AW you literally just had to be stood up for a minute and it awarded you the hour. This requires a few hundred steps during the hour which again, is a better measure IMO. The PAI system seems to get mixed reviews online. I really, really like it. The AW tries to gamify activity with the constant mantra to close your rings. Zepp looks at your strenuous exercise each day, gives you a points score and then shows the total for the last 7 days on a rolling basis. So you can take a rest day or two and all is still good. No more pressure to fiddle your calories late in the day so you keep your move streak going! I’ve found the HR tracking to work ok for high HR exercise (running, HIIT etc) but was initially a bit erratic for more sedate activities such as walking. You need to wear the watch tight to your wrist or the HR isn’t accurate. To be fair, all of these wearables are like that so I don’t think its fair to criticise this one for this limitation although I got the leather band which isn’t great for wearing tight to your wrist. I swapped for a magnetic band which has solved the problem. It’s a minor annoyance which is only an issue if I’m out for a walk and forget to tighten the band a little. I don’t tend to have a problem when I’m exercising as I’ll do this automatically when I’m getting ready for an exercise session but if its just a walk I tend to forget. There is a reason Apple are obsessed with elastic or magnetic straps and Amazfit would do well to do the same because I think the supplied strap lets the watch down.
The Zepp app is well laid out and everything is in one place. It syncs some of the info to the Apple Health app although I’ve not had cause to look in there. I’m into my exercise and like reviewing my times and HR and Vo2Max etc which I can now do in one place unlike with the AW which required about 5 different apps for HR zones, sleep tracking, weight etc etc.
Overall I am genuinely impressed with the watch. It is intuitive, well made, looks a lot more expensive that it actually was and really can hold its own against the AW. It doesn’t ‘do’ as much as the AW in terms of the onboard apps but I’m not really sure that’s a bad thing. Its got a lovely display, loads of faces that prioritise telling the time rather than giving you loads of complications that you can’t read (!), has stella battery life, great exercise credentials and tracks all of the key health metrics I want. I would definitely recommend this, even over much more expensive rivals.
Moved to this from a Huawei GT2, wanted something that could track indoor soccer and also liked the always on watch faces matching the normal watch face.
Some irritations however:
The speaker is a bit of a gimmick, with the GT2, on a run I’d get regular updates on pace, heartrate and distance – the GTR3P is silent on the run until I reach a goal set in Pace assistant.
Thermometer is pretty useless. currently reading 31.5c – not sure what this is supposed to measure, it’s not my body heat and certainly not the room temperature. I was under the impression it was a sensor for skin temperature and I could monitor when I’m ill etc – nope
Alexa and offline assistant is ok – although pretty limited – not sure I’d ever use either.
Rotating crown is nice – but when you find what you want, the normal reaction would be to press the crown to select the item however this just returns the watch to the watch face
Good points
Battery life is superb
GPS is quick – around 10 seconds to lock on
Zepp app is very good and comprehensive
150+ sports to choose from
Auto run/walk detection works well
PAI overall health score is a nice touch and really motivating.
Beautiful clear screen and quick release easily changed 22mm straps
Notifications work well for all apps, whatsapp etc (you can only read, not respond)
One Touch for all sensors to read you is a great idea and works seemlessly.
Overall it’s a small step up from the GT2 – if I can get the run coach working and work out how to overcome the other quirks I’ll add the extra sta

Alles in allem gute Performance.
Sehr sehr schade
Problme connu, gnral. MAJ 07/2022 a marche enfin……..
The best watch I ever had. Excellent battery life and very comfortable to wear. The firmware needed an upgrade to be stable but now it is perfect 🙂
Many good functions, working well, longtime battery, nice colors in screen, best smartwatch ever 🙂
-bin bisher sehr zufrieden
-Akku hlt bis zu 14 Tagen
-super Display
I quite like the watch, it has a good battery life, for me it lasts to about 10 days. And the display is really sharp for this price point, which is the reason i purchased this device.
Unlike most gadget watches, this one has an audible alarm. And a voice memo feature. And a calendar app that, while unable to sync with any external calendar such as Google Calendar, does allow the possibility of plugging in repeating events/alarms for mundane things such as pill reminders, taking the bins out etc. All of which sounds terribly old fashioned but is genuinely useful.
Less useful are the many gorgeous watch faces you can load on to it with more being added weekly, but boy are they nice to look at. It does all the fitness and health things too which are a bit of fun but not to be taken too seriously, with some of them still in need of firmware tweaking (apparently I was doing 60mph on my bicycle the other day, although the app corrected that down to a more believable 25mph when reviewing the journey later!).
And you can take and initiate calls on it, just like Star Trek.
There are still a few rough edges to the firmware but overall this is a lovely thing which should only get better as updates are rolled out.
Definitely pleased with it 😉
