Was a little unsure about this to begin with but have used it a few times when camping in the van. Sturdy design. Just watch how you stand up after using it as it’s quite a low desig
This is probably the best 50 I have ever spent. I have a campervan which I use for work. I suffer from IBS, which is irritable bowel syndrome. I can stop anywhere, use this toilet and carry on with my days work.
It’s sturdy and comfortable and folds away to next to nothing.
You don’t need the extras it comes with. Just use bin liners and wet wipes and you’re good to go. Have some carrier bags to hand to disguise the bin liners when taking it to the Doggy waste poo bins or wherever.
Brought this to take fishing, super sturdy, fine for me to use ( probably 16stone, 6ft+) yes it’s a little low but not found it an issue, its also fairly heavy but that’s a trade off for how well made and sturdy it is.
My only slight concern is the outer material, it feels and looks like the type that will crack and split but time will tell!
Money well spent, saved walking in the woods to the toilet in the dead of night . Works perfectly for 1s, 2s etc brilliant piece of equipment would be without it .5*
easy to use very sturdy great for fishing overnight stays
Bivvy loo arrived this afternoon and I am thrilled with it. It’s a lot smaller than I expected (both folded in its bag and set up ready for use) so it takes up hardly any space in the campervan, but it feels incredibly sturdy and comfortable to use. I bought the lid as well and agree with others that the price for a slip of plastic is absurd, but can’t complain because this bit of kit will be a lifesaver. So much better than bulky and disgusting chemical toilets.
This portable toilet was easy to set up and put away. Compostable bags are included, along with some powder which can turn liquid to gel. Wet wipes are also included.
One negative is that there doesn’t appear to be anyway of attaching the bags, meaning you have to be careful with how you sit and get up so as not to disturb the positioning or cause any spillage. When done with your business its easy enough to wrap the bags up and take them to a waste bin.
Keep this in the van when staying away from home to save doing the guy needing a pee trying to get dressed quickly dance. Powder not absorbent at all, tried putting it in before and after peeing and put more in each time I went but still completely liquid in the morning. However bags are liquid tight and so far haven’t leaked.
We have a tiny, lovely old VW with no space for extras and use this so we can stay in more remote campsites and stopovers where there aren’t facilities. Easy to use and sturdy. It fits between the driver and passenger seat out of the way. We got the lid as well. Probably will use 2 sachets next time as 1 didn’t fully absorb one use. But for one night stays it is brilliant. Bags tie off and go in the bin as well, so really easy to keep clean. Packs small (lid fits in the bag as well) and not too heavy. Vety happy with it.
At nearly 60, the Bivvy Loo is not the cheapest camp loo around. However, for me, the quality and convenience of the Bivvy Loo really does make it excellent value for money. I am not a carp angler so hadn’t heard of the brand but, when I mentioned it to a mate, was assured that the brand is ‘quality’. I was proven absolutely right. The Loo comes in a small travel case which zips off and reveals the folded down toilet. A quick pop up of the 4 small springs and it is good to go. The unit is secure and surprisingly comfortable. It comes with absorbant powder and plastic bags so that you can have a midnight tiddle without worrying that you will wake up to a puddle in the tent! It is very lightweight and has made camping much more straightforward! A great investment.
Simple to set up and used. Pity it does not come with a lid and the absorbency is dissapointing. Found had to use at least 2 packets each time.
Great if you camp off-grid, go to festivals or don’t like hiking to campsite loos at night/in the rain.
But rather expensive for what it is… more so when you realise you have to fork out another 13 for the lid!!
(NB: You may not need the lid if you chuck the bags away every time you use it, but the powder included is designed to absorb urine and turn to non smelly gel, so you DON’T have to waste bags!)
Not used for no 2s yet. (Would definitely chuck that bag away each time )
Pros:
+ Compact and easy to store away
+ Easy to put together
+ Sturdy
+ Better than ‘just a bucket’ or a ‘hole in the ground’ because you can actually sit on it comfortably, no squatting required
+ With the lid it doubles as a handy spare seat in our camper.
+ GREAT for kids to use!! (I’d take it on any long car journey if I had a small child. )
+ Be great at festivals too (God I hate stinking, disgusting portaloos!!)
Cons:
– Expensive, esp without lid (lost a star for that!)
– It’s a bit low for folks with dodgy knees/hips
Used on a fishing holiday in France. Absolutely awesome piece of kit when the nearest toilet is a 15 min walk away. Packs down well and bags are just sturdy enough.
As much as Amazon would like me to leave a video review, I think I’ll pass on that one!
It is sturdy, compact and feels good quality.
The seat is quite small to sit on, even for an average size human.
Haven’t worked out how to fit the bags without wrapping them over the seat, which means you’re sitting on thin plastic.
The provided sachets claim 2 litres of absorbency – that’s not been the case here – more like 200ml.
Comes in a nice bag, folds down to compact size. Quite heavy, but sturdy so worth it.
Overall this is the best portable loo with had u get bags and this powder that comes with it plus wipes apart from the powder the other 2 items are good the powder only absorbs tiny amount of wee we needed to go buy some cat litter to absorb fully still worth 5 stars but I use cat litter with that powde
Bought this over the RM system which a friend has due purely due to its pack down size.
Just the ticket for fisheries with no facilities.
Very sturdy, on occasions I’ve needed to use it it has coped admirably.
Does have a bit weight to it due to the metal supports but folds neatly down and you can throw it on the barrow no issues.
Supplied bags are a little on the thin side, I use old zip lock food bags from my food to seal them in before disposing of the lot in the bin.
Great for festivals or just out for the day with the dog
Perfect for long journeys and takes up hardly any space. Happy with my purchase.
Great for festivals when you’re tight for space in the car. I do think it’s overly expensive. Especially when the toilet lid has to be purchased separately
The price is high but the product is very good quality. Shame they charge so much for the replacement bags
Got laughed at by a mate but come the morning was begging to use it as he had eaten something that disagreed with him to a point he now wants to buy one and took his weight well
Good item for drying the car after a wash, no smears left at all
Compact, heavier than anticipated but super sturdy. Perfect for a sub zero camp out so didn’t have to trek to loo. Definite car camp accessory but invaluable if like me you need to pee in the night every night. Don’t need to have “waste disposal”, double bagged and took it home. Very sturdy bags.
This was brilliant! Honestly at first I thought it was a bit pricey but it is definitely worth it. Very sturdy, holds a grown mans weight. Very absorbent. And it all folds away nicely in its bag when you’ve disposed of the used liner. Perfect fit our campervan.
Easy to pack in my campervan. I double bag as I have had a wee accident! I also use eco bags and kitty litter to help with absorbency.
It’s a great piece of kit, well worth the money.
Excellent product, super easy to use. We now use thus instead of the porta poti.
I was most worried about this not being robust and hence being nervous to sit on it. However, it’s extremely well designed and sturdily constructed – so no worries about it collapsing, which would be a disaster!
Had this for my camper as I got rid of the chemical toilet I had as at time when wild camping it was hard to dispose off and with this just get rid of the bag in a bin. Bit pricey but their again it is built really well and will last. Beauty of it is that it packs down to nothing. Just use ordinary bin liners and buy the absorbent sheets you can get for commodes works out lot cheaper.
Great product I am a truck driver who suffers with ibs this is great for when I need to use it in an emergency
It’s great in a camper/tent if you’ve nowhere to go and get caught short, though I carry a trowel when I’m on the road or camping. Very solid, very easy, packs flat.
Great bit of kit to pop in the car/van
Easy to use, really sturdy and takes up very little space
I would think it would come with a lid as standard rather than having to purchase separately
Bought for wild camping. This is such a great loo, ideal for kids and was so easy to clear up. Would defgo recommend ordering the optional lid. Not necessary but handy to have and fits in the case. There is a good youtube video to show how to use properly including the need to poor a little water in to make the crystals dissolve properly and form a jell.
With this being so sturdy, this is why it’s quite heavy to carry around. I have yet to use it for it’s intended purpose, but it will double as a sturdy seat wherever you take it, although being a little low. It loses a star on everything in my review due to a few things:
1. it’s quite heavy to carry around with only a carrying handle, a shoulder strap would have learnt the extra star here.
2. It’s quite low as a stool, toilet, a little taller would have learnt the extra star here.
3. Weight, if the folding brackets were made of Aluminium it would be a lot lighter.
However I do recommend this product, especially for keeping in the car on long journeys for little children for when you get the ” I need the toilet call”.
I bought this for myself due to being an IBS sufferer, so when I go for a walk I always have a toilet with me.
Great!! We managed to use it well in a popup toilet tent, as well as in our Honda Jazz with the magic seats folded up. Wrapped the bin bag over the seat so everything was in the bag and the toilet would definitely not need cleaning. Did mean the bin bag stuck to your bottom a bit sometimes, but worth it to avoid any cleaning.
I agree with other reviews that it’s really low down but it is sturdy and a life saver during the night. The only real downside is the power doesn’t take much fluid. However if you add another sachet it’s fine.
As a first time (older) camper, this was a vital part of our equipment!! Not up for trudging to the campsite toilet (always situated miles away!) in the middle of the night, or roughing it in the bushes, this HAD to be on the shopping list even if a little expensive for what it is!
After lot of research, so pleased with this compact size, sturdy bag ,ease of use and cleaning and personally extra purchase of lid essential. Unexpectedly urgently had to use discreetly in car park and hidden from view in VW T5. So simple, practical and easy with swell gel. Highly recommend. Yes extra cost of swell gel , liners etc but worth it when can’t access facilities.
Me and the other half love going camping but there are certain activities that require a walk across a field which if it’s raining buckets or pitch black isnt her favourite part of the camping experience. Anyway for some time I’ve been debating whether or not we needed an alternative. This product appeared to tick all the boxes, it had to be small and compact enough to be easy to transport, easy to use and sturdy.
Now it is worth noting that for the chaps – erm how to put it politely – the circumference of the seat may not be large enough to provide the right angle of attack to multitask if you catch my drift, deposits are best kept one at a time.
Apart from that this is so sturdy, the mechanism that takes this from flat pack to practical commode is seriously heavy duty. I haven’t used the crystals, I fully intend on using cat litter instead.
Perfect for compact camping.
Very low seat height so may be a problem for some.
Powder not very absorbant and replacement bags are expensive, yet to find another small bag that fits over the seat.
Didn’t use it yet but it seems to be very sturdy. Easy to open and fold. A bit low but not too low and a bit to expensive but overall good product.
Extremely sturdy and quick to setup not the cheapest option but certainly the best I have see
brought this loo for my fishing trips, gotta be honest its a game changer, no more baking it until home, now just pop up the bivvy loo and crap away with a lovely view.
also came in hand for a newbuild house i was working on with no toilet facilities .
Not very tall but packs away very neatly, which was important as little space in van.
A very compact and useable toilet solution to lightweight travel needs. No mess or cleaning involved. Very sturdy and easy to use. Recommended for anyone looking for a simple and uncomplicated travel toilet – perfect for our self build basic campervan. Comes in very sturdy and discrete carry case. No one will know why you are disappearing into the bushes. A really excellent product.
Very strong and robust and of course folds flat for easy storage. Easy to clean and replace the disposable bags. Great for the outdoor life. Would highly recommend.
Got this for my Campervan as we are short of space and this is great! After lock down it is sometimes hard to find a toilet so it’s good to have this as a backup without wasting loads of space!
One of the best presents I have ever bought, it has been a god sent for the person I bought it for and have recommended too a number of people.
Great loo, study enough to sit on and feel safe.
You won’t find a more portable toilet! Great innovation and easy to carry for wild camping and expeditions! Must have for me
What can i say.perfect for my needs, fishing a lake with no facility to speak of.very sturdy, the whole kit is supplied bio bags wipes ect.and a carry bag
Just what we were looking for . Our Mazda camper is very compact, the bivvy loo is perfect for storage. Easy to erect . We haven’t yet used the sacks so can’t comment on absorbency. We are. Not big people so find the bivvy loo easy to sit on.
Absolutely fantastic as campers the best thing ever it make the trip so much better instead of walking in the middle of the night to the toilets every camper should have one
Good bivvy loo and fit my camper cupboard perfectly without folding down!! You need to sit on the bag but that’s no hard ship.
Brilliant idea, folds to a compact size. Super helpful in my horse trailer at competitions! It is quite heavy however so no good for carrying anywhere.
Needs a lid ! Love my bivi loo though. While the. Concept might be use and throw, I take two young girls with me and their mother so having it set up at a pitch ready to go is key. Amount of times my kids have amazingly stood in it or it’s filled with rain etc .. could otherwise be a top product . not the only one see others that say they leave there’s out, take out at night and put away in morning. No one wants a open sewerage and no one wants to faff on in middle night with bags and sachets see
Thoroughly impressed with the fold away design which is also strong and comfortable and looks elegant so can be used as storage other times.
Great product we use it with a pop up tent when out in our camper van highly recommended
A sturdy and easy to use product. Have to physically push hinges to snap open but other than that it’s great.
Love this toilet it folds up so small and takes up very little room on the car. We use it for when camping in our tent so we don’t have to walk across the field at night time. Didn’t reorder the bags that came with it just bought my own did the same job.
Excellent product, wish I’d bought one year’s ago. Arrived on time and well packaged. Setup and use very simple and instructions easy to follow it required and video on site also if needed.. My only gripe is that more than half the bags leaked which was less than pleasing so will not be investing in user brand ones in the future will source alternatives from else where otherwise would have given 5 stars.
Amazing buy, made camping so much more enjoyable. This was a lifesaver when our tent was down a steep hill from the nearest toilets. Allowed the kids to use the toilet in the night without a hike. Smallish toilet but very sturdy and we’ll made. Also folds down really small and slots in the smallest space in the car.
Great I have urgency issues at the moment and a small child and this was great for us in the middle of the night for camping especially when I was peeing it down badly with rain almost every night. I wish it did have a lid but I can see why it doesn’t . I would 100% recommended it’s help make camping possible for me when it has been a struggle in the past .
Easy to set up and use but my only gripe is that the granules they give you are not as absorbent as I would’ve expected. Very eco friendly though and a doddle to pack away,as long as you remove the bag first!!
I bought this because i need to keep it in my van, being a female painter and decorator there are times when I’m painting the exterior of properties and unable to access them for any reason, so rather than keep getting in the van to go find a loo I invested in one of these
One of my best purchases ever. Bought it for a festival and it was amazing not to have to trek to portable loos in the middle of the night. Extremly strong and packs away into a small bag.
Didn’t find the sachets of powder as absorbant as i thought they would be.
I bought this for wild camping and emergency use.
i can tell you it is very well made, strong and very easy to put up and take down.
The bag it is stored in is made of tough material and will last a long time.
very happy with this purchase.
Absolutely brilliant for camping. Put a flat bit of wood over it in the tent and use it as a bedside table, and loo for night time. Marvellous. Packs very small.
Great quality item super fast delivery but sent back due to the fact there was no cove
Very useful for over night in tent used campsite toilets in the day time. Needed a lid to cover as got a bit smelly! Used little sachet to no effect. May have used it wrong but surprised to find had to sit on black plastic bag wrapped over the seat not nice white plastic. Bag tends to stick to you. However recommend for great small size and ease of use.
Wow – this has completed changed the camping game! So compact, so light and simple and so easy to put up and down. Bags were a little tricky to fit securely and you only get 12 of them but really any biodegradable bag will do. The absorbent powder works brilliant and removes all traces of any smells – we were able to use the same bag for 2 days and nights. Highly recommend
This bivvy hasn’t been used yet but just taking it out the case its obvious this is quality and quite heavy and will last a very long time definitely recommend.
We used it for the first time this past weekend and have to say what a brilliant product it is. Besides myself, my daughter used it with no difficulty and so did my husband, but I cannot comment on how easy it is for a man to use! For us ladies though, its a must have for anyone who walks, camps etc. It’s so compact it would fit in a rucksack and saves battling with other female urination devices.
It’s sturdy, easy to use and clean and an all round great product. It does feel quite low to use however, so we may need to investigate ways of raising it for longer camping trips but that’s a minor issue…..any taller and it would be a much bigger unit to find space in our van for.
The bags supplied fit well, and we were very surprised at the effectiveness of the wee bags of powder. It coped with 3 people using the bag in close succession, and would have taken more to be honest. We tied up the bags and put them in our waste bin at home and I can safely say there was no odour at all. Love this, so much so that I’ve ordered more bags already to ensure we have a constant supply!
Internal clips click into place making a strong, rigid and very sturdy, stable camping loo which will fold down to just 40x34x5cm fin its carry case or storage or stowage. It could even be carried discreetly in a backpack or even in its own case which is devoid of any branding so observers won’t know what it is (unless they already have one). Lining bags need to be used and further supplies of biodegradable bags are available from the manufacturer once the initial supply have been used – or kitchen bin liners could be used if you have suitable disposal facilities available.
The Bivvy Loo feels low to sit on but can be placed on a step or firm cushion if preferred. It is comfortable although I can understand why a few men have reported some discomfort in the gentlemans department while sitting…
In addition to camping use, it is also handy to keep in a car for day trips with children, the elderly or even for IBS sufferers who need the confidence of knowing they don’t need to reply on public toilets.
Very robust, so feels secure when sitting on it. Folds up into a tiny package, so ideal for our small campervan.
Packs down to a compact size, easily transported and is as described in the on the Web page, good value for money.
Has a bit of weight to it, but that’s a good thing as it’s so sturdy it’s insane that it works so well. An elephant could probably stand on it.
Collapses small and the overall size is small, which is great!
Can’t fault it.
For long fishing stays it is an awesome luxury.
I have used this a few times when camping. It is very sturdy and I love the fact that it packs away flat. You will need 2 sachets for 1 adult and the sachets work well. I have just purchased a tub of the crystals which also work well. I would recommend this potty for any outdoor trip.
I am a mighty 6’5″ and 29 stone in weight
I thought this little loo would stand no chance but it doesn’t even flinch
Superbly built and super strong
I bought it for taking on motorbike rallies as the chemical toilets are usually revolting and piled high above the rim after a day or two
This bivvy loo folds flat and actually fits inside the top box of my touring Honda Bike
So now I can take a dump in my tent with door open and watch the desperate Queing up at the chemical bogs from hell
Good solid loo but one thing I’ve found is its to low down if you are a tall guy like me it’s hard to use can do with a stand to raise it up I have to put it a bucket that is upended to make it easy to use
Having bought various camping type toilets and not liking them for either been too bulky or full of design failings when under closer inspection and testing i thought i would give this one a go. Yes on first looks it seems a little expensive for what it is but in all honesty its worth every penny.
Starting with the bag itself its made of a really good strong material with what appears to be a waterproof backing. From the inside i can see where the handle is sewn on and i doubt that will be tearing off any time soon. The zip while not industrial strength seems fine and adequate for the job. Although it has plastic teeth rather than metal ones which i would have preferred. I chose the dark army green colour rather than the blue mainly because i feel blue reminds me of toilets because when i was a kid every school and house painted the toilets in shades of blue so i thought it wouldn’t be as obvious what was inside. Silly i know but that’s just me. Although if someone looked closely enough at the bag they would see the bivvyloo website address printed in white lettering on one side so would kinda give the game away. It wasn’t a deal breaker for me by a long mile though..
Moving onto the most important part which is the toilet itself. When folded down and in the bag its about 2 inches thick and pretty much the same when taken out. When folded out its around ten inches high so a bit lower than a standard toilet so be aware of that if you have dodgy knees without anything nearby to help you get up and down. After a quick sit test i didn’t find it much of an issue and i think because of its height it would be just as usable for children.
The oval seat is approx 15 inches long and about 12 and a half wide. The opening is around 11 by 8 and a half so really not that much different from a regular toilet seat. The couple of issues are is that it doesn’t have any kind of lid either attached or like a pan lid, if you know what i mean. That means if you use it during the night while camping i think you would need to put a bin bag or something over it if you weren’t going to take the bag out right away and tie a knot in it. Also because the seat doesn’t lift up there is nowhere to attach a bag so it has to be folded over the seat itself. It’s not a huge problem and i can see why they have made the choice to design it this way to help keep it sturdy.
The walls of the toilet look like they are made out of a different material than the bag because its darker in colour and shinier but its just as strong feeling to me. There is an inner bucket made out of the same material as the walls. It looks waterproof but I’m sure it isn’t meant to be used without a bag. I feel because it zips off its more for in case there is an accident and it can be taken out and easily cleaned. Around the top of the inside is a a couple of centimeters or so deep of much softer and probably not waterproof material. I think they have used it so it makes using the zip much easier because it is sewn onto to the top half of the zip. It does make me think even more so that this toilet always needs to be used with a bag.
Handily CarpLife have included a supply of 12 Bivvyloo branded black bags (the packaging is branded not the bags themselves) and 12 sachets of absorbent powder. The powder apparently is good for treating up to 2 litres of waste and controlling odours. But as i stated earlier there is no lid so i think maybe for pee will be its only use to make it easier to take to a disposal point. They have also supplied a packet of 50 Whoopie Doo wipes which are biodegradable and dermatologically tested. So won’t kill badgers etc. Yeah you now also have that image in your head of a badger eating these just like i have so we will just have to deal with it the best we can.
I took out the bowl to see what the mechanism to stop it collapsing looked like. There are four wide spring loaded push out hinges made out of metal and not plastic so i reckon they are very much up to the rigors of the use it will get. These hinges are locked into place with a satisfying click by pressing down on the bottom of the bucket from the inside and are screwed securely to both the base and the seat. To collapse them again they need to be pushed in from the outside walls.
As i said earlier in my review i tried a sit test to see if it would take my weight and where many other toilets have failed in the past in one way or another i have no fears over this one having problems at the wrong time. The hinges creaked a little bit when i did the side to side lean over test but i think that’s just down to them been very new and unused. I’m not the smallest bloke in the world but i have no worries at all that it would collapse on me.
If i could offer any design change it would be to the bottom of the toilet itself. I feel that on uneven ground the flat base might be an issue, not a big one but still. The bottom seems to be made of the same type of material as the seat and while strong and solid it is just mainly flat. There are some token feet on it but they are pretty useless because while wide enough they are only a couple of millimeters deep. Maybe they are to help stop it from sliding around on the floor. I think it would be great if they kept the same solid base for strength and kept the placement and floor space size of the meager depth feet that are already there but just made them an inch or so longer to help compensate for any stones or tree roots etc.
One thing i haven’t mentioned is the weight of it. Despite its compact size when folded, and even though i have no scales to weigh it with, i would consider it to not be the lightest out there so i’m not sure if it would be suitable for hiking with. Although saying that this was designed around those people who like to go fishing so if they can easily cart it around maybe i am just feeling lazy today. I will be keeping it in the back of the car so its not an issue for me and the weight makes me think of quality.
I think because of its ease and speed of unfolding it could also be very useful for people who suffer with IBS or other bowel problems for those road side emergencies when you have to go and right now. Paired with a popup toilet tent i really do believe it will save the stress of trying to find a public toilet and praying its open, clean and there is an empty cubicle. Even been able to plan longer journeys without having to plan it around public toilets would be less stressful and give you more freedom. Also diving behind a bush is rarely a good idea no matter how secluded you think it is. We love our pets and so the last thing you want is a dog walker stumbling upon you in your moment of privacy behind said bush. Nobody will bother you in a lay-by or that far corner of a car park that nobody uses. Just something to think about.
Well boys and girls i think i have just about covered everything so we have come to the end of my review and i hope it has helped you make a decision either way. I wasn’t paid for this or offered any discount or given it for free to write a glowing report and i also have absolutely no affiliation with the makers and sellers CarpLife. I have used my own hard cash to buy this because it looked very compact and discreet when folded and in its bag so it’s easy to store in the boot of my car. Only time will tell if it is really up to the job long term but i have no doubts at all that for myself it is money well spent.
Peace
