Loves this alternative to compost. My seeds are grow the best they ever have. Just cut open the top add water until absorbed and tripped in size. So quick and easy and less mess. I add some extra water so it’s quite moist and it’s really worked wonders for me. I’ve brought about 6 as keep coming back. Brilliant product and would highly recommend for growing seeds and repotting seedlings/plug plants. I’ve used to grow seeds – tomatoes, Cucamelon, cucumber, rocket, sweet peppers, chilli, salad leaves.
I added water 1L and waiting the coconut coir going more 3L wow, I am happy for it. Next time I will buy agai
I had not heard of coconut coir before so this is an interesting idea. It turns out it works really well, which is genius. It arrived in small packaging which you have to cut open to make a box and then simply add water and it expands. The instructions are very clear so you can’t go wrong. The only down side is that you don’t get much potting soil for your money so it’s a good and effective idea but expensive, cheaper alternatives are out there. If you are happy to pay the price then you won’t be disappointed.
It’s a great concept – peat free compost which is dry and lightweight for transport, just add water. Here you can use the bag it comes in to rehydrate it. Oddly the instructions specify adding 1L of water, and quite obviously you are not going to get 3L of compost out of 1L of water and a brick of dry compost only a cm or so thick. I managed to add 2L of water before it wouldn’t absorb any more even after fluffing it all up, so 2L is around what you seem to get out of this pack, not 3L. You can, as with many things, get much better value for money with larger packs (you can get ones which go up to 75L when hydrated but with dry weight only 5kg which are a godsend to me having done my back in earlier this year and still recovering, and I don’t want to have to lift any of those great big bags you get from a garden centre). But if you just want enough to fill a windowsill pot or two or plant a small handful of seeds, this is fine.
After adding one litre of water to this block, you get only 3 litres on compost.
A week ago, I used it for seeding sunflower in seeding cell and I already see green tips coming out. So it seems the quality is good but it’s definitely not feasible for general gardening given their high price.
The box is nice, which I used to grow indoor plants for the kitchen window.
I suggest this is only suitable for gifting.
How easy and clever the design is and that the bag then becomes a plant pot all ready to use
No buying heavy bags of compost or loads of plant pots and can sit indoors on a windowsill or be put out in the garden!
I actually cancelled my order of this as i realised i already had the exact same brand, either that or it arrived and one of the teenagers took it in and forgot to tell me!.. (possibly ther case lol).
I thought i would fill out the review anyway as i am pretty impressed with this stuff.
I used mine for houseplants, my Mums yucca/palm type plant that was looking worse for wear. I was very impressed with the amount for the price!, it did the job, the plant is definitely looking not so neglected and i have lots left over for future projects.
I am not an expert on textures of soils but as i said its done my plant good so i am happy to recommend.
This is a review of Coconut Coir Block: 3L Premium Peat Free Coco Coir Brick. At the time of writing the review this was 5.99.
I found the instructions were clear and concise. The water soaked in slowly, so small amounts could be used at a time, exactly as the instructions stated.
It created plenty of compost and the seeds planted therein have all sprouted within 7 days.
One small negative is that a small amount of white fungus has formed on top of the compost in places, however due to how efficient it is, I would not hesitate to recommend it!
Amazing soil, everything what was seeded came out really fast, easy to make it, can be stored for some time as it s dry when it comes. Easy to mix up.
I was really pleased to be able to try this compost making set. It is peat free which is great, and saves having to lug heavy bags of compost back from the garden centre. You get around 3 litres from a very small block. It is not fine enough for seedlings but for established plants it is fine. Very pleased with it and a very neat idea.
This coconut coir block arrives as a compressed block which is ideal for storage
When required one simply opens it up and the bag expands to allow 1 litre of water to be added.
The block swells and produces approx 3litres of peat free potting soil.
This will be ideal for my OH when he plants in the spring, as his seedlings need something light and airy to begin with
Its quite expensive but when something special is required for growing then this would be worth it.
Recommended
Quite convenient package that doesn’t need too much stuff to get ready.
Able to setup in less than few minutes and ready to sow the seeds.
Although it looks a bit expensive when compared to the conventional modes of sowing, it is well worth for the price mainly due to the great convenience it offers.
This coco coir brick ‘fluffed up’ very well with 1lite (measured) of water.
I haven’t used it to mix with growing medium yet. but it looks great for absorbing water.
Brilliant Idea. Great to store as they are very lightweight and small. it is just so versatile and easy to use. Unlike traditional compost that come in big bulky bags, this comes in a neat little block that is easily stored and transported. you just add water and it expands. It has got lots of fibers which looks very much like the soil in the bonsai pot which I bought from Aldi. I prefer it to normal compost because it is loose, absorbent and neat. I am not convinced if it has got enough nutrients to feed young plants so planned to mix it with all-purpose compost for outdoor vegetables and fruits.
Coconut Coir Block: 3L Premium Peat Free Coco Coir Brick Potting Soil for Planting — All Purpose Compost Soil — Outdoor and House Plant Soil, Indoor Potting Mix — Coco Brick, Planting Soil by Own Grown.
This arrived basically flat packed in a plastic packaging with the instructions stuck on the out side.
My husband made this this morning so he could get his Seedlings sorted…… It was very easy to do, just add approximately 1 litre of water gradually and then it turns into 3 litre of soil, was very quick and easy.
This soil is the coco type with nutrients, its made of coconut Coir pith and coconut fibre that contain phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.
Hubby impressed by it and says he will be buying more!
Both if us can reccomend and the price is average.
Hard pressed coconut block of soil addictive for growths. Nicely, air tightly, packed. One of many sort of must have if thinking seriously about growing your plants healthy. Recommended.
I was pleased to try this ‘Coconut Coir Block: 3L Premium Peat Free Coco Coir Brick Potting Soil for Planting — All Purpose Compost Soil — Outdoor and House Plant Soil, Indoor Potting Mix — Coco Brick, Planting Soil by OwnGrown’. I do a lot of gardening and was intrigued by this compost block made from coconut coir pith and coconut fibre. I usually use multi purpose compost.
1. You get an 18cm square x about 1.5cm deep solid compost block, sealed within a branded opaque plastic bag – there are instructions on the reverse.
2. You cut off the top strip of the bag and it pulls up into a square open topped cube shape with the block sitting in the base. You add 1 litre of water and after about 20 minutes it has absorbed all the water and about trebled in depth.
3. Then you agitate the compost until it is all separate and friable. I don’t know that my final compost was as far up the sides of the container as the photo on the Amazon product page but definitely a lot more than the compressed block.
4. As regards to the texture of the compost – it is very fibrous; not as fine as my usual multi-purpose type. I have doubts that it would be a great medium to plant seeds in but can’t see any trouble with indoor plants or already grown plantlets.
5. I will do a test in my greenhouse and see how plants thrive as apposed to my usual compost. This soil has ‘sufficient nutrients for a few weeks’, so should be good for growing plants.
6. The current price of 5.95 is expensive, in my opinion for the small amount of compost you get but if you just want a little to repot a plant then it would do a good job. The compressed block is a clever concept and coir is 100% peat free.
Good soil. Packaged nicely and very compact. Works well! A lot of soil for the price. Good value for money. Perfect for for plants.
Compact compost requires rehydration, the slab comes it it’s own bag, slit the top and add water.
It acts a kind of mini grow bag, so hydrated block can be left on a windowsill and seeds planted.
It is a touch expensive however for what you get but really you are paying convenience.
This is perfect to use both indoors especially if you don’t have a garden or are just looking for a growing activity for the kids.
I got this for my 7 year old nephew, who loves planting and growing things. This will be ideal for us to grow a few small vegetable plants in the spring.
My nephew can’t wait till it’s time to start planting. His already planning what his going to be growing!
Super simple and easy to make, my children were amazed. Simply open up the bag and add the appropriate amount of water and watch it growing. My children have planted sweet peas in this for the summer and cannot wait to watch them grow from the soil. So good quality item that will be sure to impress your childre
This arrives in a small very lightweight bag measuring approx 18.5cm x 18.5cm x just under 1.5cm.
It’s very easy to store away until you need it & brilliant for pretty much everything that isn’t an acid loving plant – this is a peat free mix.
When you want to use it, carefully open the bag & it will fold up to being about 16cm high.
Add one litre of water (mix it in bit by bit to rehydrate the coir) & will swell up until once broken up with hands or a hand tool it fills the bag up about halfway.
This is only a very small amount of soil so please pay attention to the measurements & don’t think of big bags of compost etc..
Even the smallest of those tend to be 10 litres but this only makes about 3 litres.
It is enough to pot on a houseplant that’s growing a little big for it’s pot, or a couple of smaller ones.
Nice easy to store product.
Very easy to use. Smells good, feels good.
A bit too much plastic, though.
