Has so many functionalities packed in with openwrt the possibilities are basically endless. Going to be very nifty when travelling to secure your connection and create your own LAN, or even at home since the Wifi 6 performance is great. Connects to Mullvad VPN with a click of a button.
I am running DD-WRT on a WRT3200ACM configured with custom firewalls, multiple WANs + VLANs, and OpenVPN. The Wifi on the WRT3200ACM has always been problematic, to the point that I added two external APs to handle critical Wifi connections. With increasing adoption of AX Wifi and the additional security of WPA3, my existing AC APs were in need of replacement. I couldn’t find a good replacement router that supports DD-WRT and AX wifi, so decided to look into this device as a replacement Wifi AP.
I purchased one of these hoping that I could add multiple AP SSIDs on multiple VLANs and Trunk these connections back to DD-WRT over a single port. The default web interface did not support this directly, but I was able to use the native OpenWRT interface to add multiple VLANs to the eth0 port (as a trunk), add VLAN bridges & interfaces to keep this traffic partitioned, and add multiple SSIDs to these interfaces so each VLAN has separate Wifi SSIDs. I was impressed that I was able to configure a variety of WPA2/WPA3 combinations for each SSID on the same radio so that I can support legacy devices on some VLANs while increasing security with WPA3 wherever possible. Once these additional interfaces/VLANs/SSIDs were set up, I can now manage them using the GL.iNet interface. I am impressed with the overall performance of this product. This one device will allow me to replace multiple AC APs with a single AX capable device and improve/maintain network security.
I received my GL-iNet Travel Router (GL-AXT1800) and spent an evening trying it out. I love it. I got this for it’s WPA3 capabilities. I tried three of the four ways to connect. i.e. I connected it to a PC with a Wi-Fi cable, I connected by Wi-Fi to its SSID, and I tethered it to my phone with USB cable and got internet both from the phones Wi-Fi connection and its cell 5G connection. I powered it from an Anker PowerCore 10000 2.4A , so you don’t need an AC outlet. It did not work with a 2.3A Samsung Phone Charger. The included charger is 4A 20w. I set one 5G radio to medium power. If you had all radios on: 2.4GHz and 5 GHz and their guest networks running, it could pull a lot more power. It was easy to setup AdGuard and NordVPN from the Web Gui. I didn’t setup ipv6 or Tor. I didn’t test the SD card used for network storage/samba, but it looked easy to set up. Everything I did test, worked. There’s a lot of flexibility packed into a small footprint that can be run with one 5V power cord.
I use the mode switch, on the side of the box, to control the VPN. I turn it OFF before I Power-on. The last time it was used, the VPN was ON, so this way the VPN will be turned OFF as soon as the box starts. Then I can connect to an internet source and turn it back on in the Web Gui.
There is a warning in advanced options about using Luci. I am familiar with Luci and went there anyway and clicked on wireless and everything froze up. Then pages were blank. One click! I recycled the power and everything was OK, thankfully. Lesson Learned. This isn’t the sweet Luci I use to know! ymmv and there is that reset button, 10 secs for a factory reset.
I was excited when I discovered this travel router. I now use it as an “extension” of my home network when I travel. I bring my baby cameras, google home, Alexa, etc. when we travel and this router uses the same broadcast SSID as my home network. I can then login/connect to the remote network and it rebroadcasts the internet as my home network. I no longer have to reset up all the devices on the road. Brilliant.
Overall it’s a fun little device. Always hooked up in my RV ready for camping. Only wish, it would intercept prompts and forward them to the browser. It’s just an annoyance to do MAC cloning to achieve prompted connections.
GL-iNet has really made a name for themselves at making great portable routers.
my old one finally gave up the ghost after many years (i think 5). So, I got the new one. it works great. it is faster, and has more VPN options. on the down-side, it is twice as big and takes up a lot more room in my bag. 🙁 (more ram would be nice too.) Overall a great product! I would recommend it to anyone who travels, even just vacation. I just set the wifi name and password to be the same as my home router, and the whole family can connect just like it was at home!
I had the prior version of this router and really liked its ability to be a repeater when I’m in a marina. Also love the ability to add a terabyte usb hard drive to host my movie library. This router is even better. Easy to use app to control it and great performance. This is all the router I use on my boat.
Very comprehensive product, allows power users to configure as they want, for more ‘normal’ users would be great to have an app on the phone/iPad to do quick setup. Have not tried it yet with more finicky public Wi-Fi spots that require several click throughs – for straight forward use all good.
I had bought an older version of this from this manufacturer a long time ago and really liked the simple software built on top of a long time good open source routing software and had a new use case for an offline static website that I wanted to power off batteries. I tried using a raspberry pi zero but it was not performant enough for the JS heavy application so I tried to use a newq file hub but it’s web server kept crashing under rather light and seemingly random reasons. I also tried using an old android phone but that didn’t support exfat external drives so that idea was also out. I got to thinking that a router with decent software and the right ports would work perfectly. I remembered this brand from a previous purchase and saw the hardware specs and thought it would be plenty to host a simple static website off of a usb drive and sure enough it does this extremely well. Now openwrt which is the underlying software has plugins to run a full fledged web server off of it but I figured I would try to just use the http method already built in that is provided from the network storage WebDAV protocol. This worked perfectly and is far more performant than any other solution I tried. With my battery pack showing it can run it for 15 hours I think this solution will work perfectly for my intended use case.
The router is quite simple and about the footprint of my iPhone just a little larger and thicker of course.
The tf card easily supported my 1tb card in exfat and the usb 3.0 port on the back also works much the same way with an adapter.
It includes a power bring but any usb c charger should be able to supply it enough power. It’s about 20 watts or so.
There is a small fan inside but I never heard it.
The repeater function does not appear to work with eero routers after a firmware update so unsure what happened there.
Overall though easy to use and very versatile thanks to its very open source software also performance seems great for the price.
I have been looking for a device like this to solve my problem. There is no Ethernet connection in my home office (too far away from the Internet modem in my living room). I needed an Ethernet drop to connect a “managed network switch” to my network. With this device, I can use the wireless repeater functionality to connect a Windows Server 2019 machine to my network and have the server physically located in my home office.
Due to the heat being generated by the GL.iNet router, I placed a USB-powered fan (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0814YW36D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1) under the router to help with cooling.
I used speedtest.net to run some speed tests to see how the speed is affected using the six different scenarios I could use to connect my main PC workstation to the Internet from my office. Two of the tests don’t have the router included. See the images for details.
Living in Germany has its costs when it comes to internet connection. Not only do you have to wait for someone for 2 months, or sometimes even more, to come and swap 2 cables which enable your internet, but the internet here is also still from the 20th century (AKA DSL). It’s true, it has somewhat improved, but it’s still DSL. However, that’s beyond the scope of this router. The reality is, having internet in Germany means there’s a 90% probability that you will have a Fritzbox. It’s not bad, in fact, it’s a good device. Without it, you wouldn’t even be able to connect, as it also has a DSL modem in it. But the problem lies in its price. Fritzboxes are astronomically expensive. Hence, the ISP will ship you (for 5EUR/mo.) the most basic model they can offer. This model will not only lack a 5Ghz band, it’s also quite slow, and since all of your neighbors will likely have the same router, all the channels are filled with noise, which makes watching a Netflix TV show or a YouTube video on your Apple TV (or any other TV in general) a nightmare.
However, this router is a savior. You just plug it in, do a very basic configuration (like setting a password, SSID and security key for your WiFi) and voila, you can enjoy your maximum speed over WiFi ax on the 5Ghz band, without constant changes of the channel and loss of connection.
Not to mention the multi-WAN feature, which is useful while traveling. It allows you to plug in several or different internet sources, maintaining the same internal network and the same SSIDs wherever you go. It also features a failover system, so if your cable drops, it can use your WiFi-repeater or a mobile phone tethering, or whatever.
Another feature is the VPN. It allows you to connect to a VPN provider (NordVPN is preconfigured and all you have to do is to create a username and password and fill it in) using OpenVPN or WireGuard protocols. It can also act as a VPN Server, so if you want to work from the Maldives and appear as if you’re back home, it’s never been easier. It might be best to have 2 of them. By the way, you can create VPN Policies, like splitting the devices you want to use VPN and the ones you don’t. This way, you can connect your TV to a country where there is no YouTube Premium, for example… But I didn’t tell you this .
There is also an AdGuard app, which filters ads at the DNS level by blocking undesired well-known URLs, which makes your web pages load faster. It doesn’t block everything perfectly though, and sometimes can block something useful, but 99% of the time it is good.
Lastly, you can easily ssh into this device and gain access to the OS at the root level because it has nothing else but a Linux kernel inside. And when you know what you’re doing, you have full access. Yes, there is also a dedicated UI to configure the OpenWRT (which is the base OS for this router).
P.S. It also has tons of other features which are mentioned everywhere. In this review, I tried to respond to the potential questions that I personally had before buying it.
If you need a powerful router, just buy this one, and you will never regret it.
I bought this router so I can connect to my home VPN while in the road. It’s way more convenient than running the VPN on every device and helps with devices I can’t connect to VPNs directly.
The GUI software is easy to use and has many many options to account for most use cases. The signal strength is good and I’ve never had connectivity issues.
The only gripe is that it’s a bit cumbersome when using Wi-Fi’s that have login screens in them such as hotels. You need to log in to the WiFi using a device with a web browser then cloning its IP address on this router. It isn’t hard and the cloning is easy to do with their GUI, however it’d be much easier if the OS had a web browser built in to handle the login to the WiFi.
Amazing product though that allows web browsing in public wifi more secure if you utilize the VPN functions.
There wasn’t much in reviews or information for people doing what I wanted it for so thought I should write it up. I bought this specifically for something small and compact that runs OpenWRT under the hood and supports Wifi 6 for my Meta Quest 2 Airlink needs. I hooked this up, disabled DHCP and router features through Luci (hidden interface for ‘power users’) and basically turned it into a fancy access point to put in the room where I use the quest the most. It worked perfectly. Previously I was trying to use an Ubiquiti AP I had that only did Wifi 5 and it didn’t always quite cut it. This was smooth as butter — even with the quest airlink bitrate turned all the way up. 10/10 would recommend for this use case.
As a travel router? It looks like it would be really nice but I didn’t buy it for that. However I like what I see enough that I may buy a second to keep in my backpack for when I travel for work. It’s got some really nice features for that and it appears to be easy enough to use even if you stick to their customized interface. I’ll certainly come back and update this review if it falls short of my use cases or if I learn more good/bad about it but so far I like it.
I have used Gl-Inet product for my VPN needs. I made this purchase at the last minute because my previous travel was lost. I got bought this one late in the evening and it delivered to my parents in just enough time to be able to sign into work. I use a wire guard VPN to connect back to my house that is running a Flint acting as the server. I use unifi products for my main LAN and Gl-inet products for the VPN. It’s worked flawlessly for my needs and using openWRT makes everything very customizable.
I have used a few Gl.Inet routers previously. Usually in WiFi repeater mode. However, I just found a new to me feature. Network share. I can use a Micro SD card or USB thumb drive and create a share folder between 2 computers. I have started using it between equipment at work and isolating the equipment from the corporate network. Corporate computers require a user name and password to connect to a folder per domain restrictions. This works. Networks windows IOT, 10, and 11.
I originally bought this router to use in my bands digital mixer rack. We required something with a bit more range so I installed this one at my daughter’s house. They are avid gamers and watch a lot of streaming videos. This little guy keeps up with anything they throw at it. It was easy to set up and has been very reliable. I don’t use it for travel but given the size and performance, it would be a great choice for anyone that needs to carry their own WiFi network around with them.
I want to start off by saying I bought the 1200 opal router first and the VPN speeds were around 10% of what my normal speeds are. After looking online, I kept noticing that this was something that is expected as using it with a VPN drags down the speed.
Fast forward 2 weeks, I returned the 1200 and bought this bad boy. It is NEARLY perfect. By that I mean the VPN speeds are at 90% and are more than fast enough to do my work over seas. I love this device as it keeps my network secure through Nord VPN. Installation was easy and configuring my VPN account was almost seamless. Highly recommend for those looking to use a VPN through their travel routers. It is nice and compact.
I should say I made the right decision in buying this little product after carefully analysing several competitor products online. Easy to set up and use, very reliable, very attractive interface, ability to put VPN, Adblock, personal DNS and many security features in this little handy device. You can take this anywhere, especially when using free Wifi in hotels or anywhere; use this as an extender. This will protect you from cyber-attacks and give you a reliable signal, a USB port, and 2 LAN ports for faster internet. Buy this product with confidence. One thing to add, though, is it gets heated up quickly. The fan will run when the temperature reaches 70 F or something. You need to lower it to 60 or less to get the fan kicked in at a lower temperature so the device doesn’t get heated up quickly.
This is a nice travel router/wifi extender. Perhaps a little expensive compared to capable full-size routers that offer the same or more features. If size is important, smaller is better unless you need more than two Ethernet ports. I can see this being the perfect travel router.
I was hoping to use this as a true WiFi bridge to connect a couple of Ethernet-only devices in a location where I cannot run cables to my home LAN. It will do that in Extender mode but then these devices are only accessible from devices connected to the GL.iNet router via WiFi. They are not accessible from any devices connected to the main LAN via Ethernet or WiFi. I learned this is how it is supposed to work but does not meet my needs.
As I learned how each mode was supposed to work, I learned the device does what it says it will do but does not meet my needs so I will find another use for it.
To meet my needs, I ended up going with a WiFi access point that happens to have two Ethernet ports from the same manufacturer as the rest of my LAN equipment. This worked as I had hoped.
Just a disclaimer, I’ve owned just about every interation of this device and others like it from GL.iNet and I hold these things in high regard.
Not to echo what everyone is saying already and instead, I want to focus on the biggest drawback.
It overheats!! When this happens, it turns itself off and comes back on after it’s reached an operational temperature level. I own the MT3000 (Beryl AX) which is the counterpart to this device and that unit has met my expectations flawlessly. I have (4) port 2.5gb switches attached to both this Slate AX and the Beryl AX for stable and portable data transfer between hosts. When comparing the two, the Slate AX tends to overheat while running the same applications/plugins and performing the same operations over the network.
Despite having a larger heatsink, the fan doesn’t engage and is still even when it’s throttling. I may tear it down and investigate further however I’ve only owned the device for <1 month, I may repaste the TIM if there's an opportunity to do so.
The Beryl AX runs DDR4 over DDR3 (Slate AX) and has a 2.5gb wan port and seems to transfer at higher speeds over VPNs.
Regardless, your mileage may vary but until I understand the issue with my Slate AX units then I'd probably advise others to pass on this and get the newer Beryl AX for less money.
I’m nowhere near an expert in networking, but what I can say is I have a UDM Pro for my main setup at home. This device has features that I wish my UDM pro had.
VPN: So there is a VPN ‘app’ I guess built in to the device. That’s awesome! What I didn’t expect was how easy it was going to be to set up. I went to my VPN site on my computer, logged in, downloaded my config files for wireguard, put them on a usb, logged into my Slate AX ready to copy across the files and realised I didn’t need to do any of that. The only thing I needed to do was log into the Slate, select VPN and client, log in, and select the servers I wanted to use! Wow.
Next thing is adguard. It’s built in, It works how you would expect it to. I usually run this on a docker at home, seperate to my router, so it’s so good that its built in! It Also has a dashboard for adguard where you can configure more advanced settings like Upstream DNS and extra blocklists.
You can limit individual clients speed.
There is a toggle button on the side, that is configurable. e.g. You can set it to turn VPN on/off or Adguard on/off etc.
There is a an applications page where you can download additional plugins. I haven’t downloaded anything yet. But will eventually.
Above are all things that I like.
Things that I have noticed…
It is pretty warm to touch, I looked in the dashboard and it runs at about 71C with 1 client doing light internet/youtubing with the VPN, Adguard running and Tx set to max. There is a fan setting with it defaulting to come on at 75C. So I assume it’s fine to run at that temperaure for long periods of time. This is also in a non airconditioned room with ambient temperature at 30C. Sooo I assume it will be much better when travelling and staying in 24/7 airconditioned rooms.
The reason I bought this is so that I’d have an easy way to connect my devices (chromecast, laptop, phone and partners phone) to the same network, whilst remaining secure and private using hotel/accomodation wifi. It looks like it is going to do that job perfectly. You can’t segregate local networks like you might want to on a home network, but who needs to do that whilst travelling.
I believe this is worth the money and would buy it again.
I am a fan of this company and usually end up buying their new models.
This router is far better than their previous models. Like other reviewers have mentioned it is a bit bulkier and bigger than previous models but it is very fast when it comes to Wi-Fi speeds and when using it as a WireGuard vpn client it is amazingly fast. In my set up using a fibre broadband connection and without vpn active, the speeds are faster than my bigger Asus router and when using WireGuard vpn client it still gives me speeds in excess of 300mb
I have now got the latest router by gl.inet the MV2500 Brume2 which is without Wi-Fi but has vpn cascading and you can run vpn server and client same time. I am using it as WireGuard server at home.
And I travel with this AXT1800 travel router and use it as vpn client connecting back to my home vpn server. And I have amazingly fast connection
Software and interface is simple and easy.
Highly recommended
Love the way it provides a connection for my devices to access and stay secure when on the road.
Powerful little device, huge number of options in config, with even more options via the OpenWRT LUCI interface.
Probably better than most if not all ‘free’ routers provided by ISPs.
From the interface to the connectivity options, this travel router really shines. It even features a usb port offering plug and play wired sharing of your phone’s cell service while keeping the device charged. The interface is very well put together and retains access to the underlying OpenWRT if so desired.
The Slate AX is working great for my home network. Setup was extremely easy, adding VPN client connection simple. Firmware is improved making it simple to change between VPN servers. So many additional features for advanced users. Highly recommend.
This thing is great. It can get hot so make sure to give it proper ventilation. It’s a lifesaver on the road
The travel capability is crazy small. A powerful unit and using to do processing and projections at far distances is awesome… it dies get hot so make sure you don’t put it on something that gets warm or hot….
This is a must have for working traveler. The unit take any internet connection an creates a new network of it own. Turns wifi into landlines and new wifi network. Also turns landlines into wifi.
Awesome.
Love this router. Perfect for my RV and was to power off of the RVs 12v system with a high amperage buck converter.
Works great. Many useful features. Very well fleshed out for a secure traveling network experience. Even supports tailscale to connect to the rest of your networks like they are all one network.
Only concern was using the storage function with an external HDD seemed to cause lockup and throughput issues. May be the configuration. I just offloaded that function to a RPi
if this truly supports over 40 devices at once, it will be a lifesaver on our next family cruise. Works great at home as an extension for spotty wifi in the home office.
I purchased this for two reasons: (1) when I travel internationally, this device gives me the ability to log into my work without being blocked and (2) know that I have a secure internet connection wherever I go. Not only was this easy to set up but it’s super fast. I have NordVPN set up through the device and the speeds are just incredible. Enough to handle multiple devices and stream movies! For anyone linking up an OpenVPN to this device (ie. NordVPN): Make sure you go to the VPN provider’s website to get the login credentials to enter into the device’s admin page. Do NOT enter in the credentials you use to log into the OpenVPN site. Those are two completely different credentials apparently. For example, when I log into the NordVPN website, I enter in my email address and custom password that I created. However, when I link NordVPN to this device via the admin page, I have to go to the NordVPN help page and they will provide you with credentials (login and password) that is specific to devices such as the GL.iNet.
Update: I want to address the hot temperatures that some of the reviews noted and how you can resolve for this (if you’re concerned about the high temps). Most routers are designed to run between 40 degrees Celsius to 65 degrees Celsius (104F to 149F). In the case of this router, you can tell it when to start running the internal fan through the admin panel. However, the lowest temperature it will allow you to run the internal fan is 70c / 158f. In my experience – with an average room temperature of around 22c / 72f – I’m seeing an average device running temperature of 60c / 140f. The admin panel will show you the internal running temperature. I’ve so far had this for a month and at no time did the internal fan ever turned on by itself meaning it’s never reached the 70c / 158f minimum. I do believe the 60c / 140f is totally fine however I do use this router about 8 to 12 hours a day in my office. With that said, I purchased a separate USB-powered small cooling fan (“Wathai Cooling Case Fan for Receiver DVR Xbox TV Box Router 120mm x 25mm”) and I was able to get this router’s running temperature down to 38c / 100f. I do not notice any differences in performance by doing this however I’ve never done any tests related to two different internal device running temps. The device is definitely cooler (still slightly warm but not hot) to the touch with the new addition of an external fan.
Update: When NordVPN is enabled – or I guess any VPN for that matter – my device did reach 70c / 158f. With the internal fan turned on at 70c, the temperature would hover between 69c and 70c where the fan would turn on at 70c, lowering the internal temp to 69c, and the fan would turn off only to turn back on at 70c again. But with the additional of the external fan running, even with VPN enabled, the internal temp is at 38c / 100f. The great thing about this device is it has a usb port in the back so you can connect the usb-based external fan right into it.
I’ve been using a GL-AR750S for years now and the GL-AXT1800 is a very nice and welcomed improvement. It’s way more responsive and allows you to achieve fast internet speeds when connected to a VPN provider. However, the user interface feels like it was “dumbed down” a bit, as some advanced settings were just removed or replaced by others that are not exactly the same. Other settings just won’t work properly, like the one to allow internal services to bypass VPN: It just does not work. Since that’s more of a software issue, I’m sure they’ll release a fix soon. Overall, I absolutely recommend this router.
T. viel teurere Konkurrenz (Asus: Max. 25Mbps). NordVPN-Software ist vorinstalliert. Ich bin zufrieden. Mal sehen, wie lange der Router hlt.
Product works as expected. Gave 4 stars because it came scratched.
Well not much to say besides the fact this is probably gl best product. The repeater mode works amazingly. I got the cheaper GL router but I just couldn’t even get this feature to work at all. The the VPN part with the axt1800 is a lot easier to configure your nordVPN. All you have to do is login and pick a country. It will download the needed certificates.
This is a powerful flexible wifi 6 router. It is a tad bigger and heavier than its predecessor (the Slate) but not too much; the bigger issue is that its power brick is big and relatively heavy, and because it uses a non-standard voltage/current combination of its not possible to replace it with a standard USB charger.
I have been using the old Slate as a travel router for some time and it has fit the bill. It’s a bit too slow and has narrow wifi coverage, but very compact and lightweight.
When I saw the old Slate has an AX successor I was thrilled and it turned out this is for a reason. SlateAX is not as compact and lightweight, but it’s fast and furious in regards to wifi coverage and openvpn. Power requirements are reasonable and a good quality phone charger 5v 2A or more can feed it so you don’t need to carry around the bulky power brick that came with it. It gets a bit too warm and the fan didn’t turn on automatically but since this is running openwrt there are multiple ways to push the fan sooner and keep it cool. On that note I don’t know if the fan is quiet enough so if it isn’t I would come back and drop a star.
An excellent portable wifi 6 router extender/repeater with
(A) built in and configurated WireGuard VPN,
(B) AdGuard application for blocking ads and tracking, and
(C) best of all the Drop-In Gateway Mode which is a SIMPLE way to connect the GL-iNet router to my current local area network. In this mode, I do not need to modify my current network topology but be able take advantage of all the functions on the GL-iNet router (VPN, AdGuard etc.)
I give this GL-iNet portable router three thumbs up ! A great versatile product.
This is an early / initial review after only a day of testing out of the box.
The initial 4.0.0 firmware that was pre-loaded was terrible. Every time I tried to connect to my WiFi for testing the WiFi would totally crash and I’d be forced to fully reset it. I found in the patch notes that issue is due to 160M channel width and it was fixed. I ended up using an Ethernet cable to connect to the internet and update to 4.0.4 and it seems to have resolved all the initial issues I experienced.
Since updating it seems to work pretty well so far. Tested wireguard client and routing multiple devices through my home wireguard server and it’s been working so far. I’ll be out of country for a couple months and using this on the daily soon so I’ll update with how that goes. If this had come with the updated firmware out of the box it’d likely have 5 stars in this initial review.
I wish I’d known about GL.iNet stuff sooner. This little router does a lot of stuff that a much larger and more expensive router I have just won’t do.
– WireGuard client, works great; I can put my whole network behind a VPN!
– WiFi repeater mode; great for traveling in hotels or places where you want to private network
– AdGuard
– USB C power
– Snappy and intuitive interface with regular updates PLUS it’s OpenWrt under the hood
– Tethering and cellular modem support (just plugin your phone or modem)
I can’t think of a single downside. The only thing I _might_ recommend would be a battery pack so you can use it more easily on-the-go.
I bought this current top of the line travel router to accompany me during my travels. For slightly more than $120 you get a feature rich and speedy firewall/router to protect your internet connections from preying eyes. Setup with the web based interface is easy, if you are a techie, then you can micro manage this router till you hearts content. $120 maybe a lot, but I get the peace of mind that I can have full protection between me and any public wifi or public internet connections.
I’m using this unit in my RV in combination with a Weboost cell repeater and my Samsung phone hotspot utilizing T-Mobile unlimited data plan. I USB connect my phone to the GL-iNet unit and use USB tethering from my phone to the GL-iNet unit. The GL-iNet unit is at the core of my RV’s inet solution allowing me to connect an ethernet cable to my RV TV as well as allowing another ethernet connection to my laptop, etc WITHOUT having to utilize wifi. The wifi thru the GL-iNet is available for other devices as well. A lot of flexibility with this unit.
I’ve been using GL.iNet products including the Mango, USB MicroRouter and Slate 750S for some years now. The open architecture and ability to add functionality via the underpinning of the Linux O/S is invaluable. Due to a cat related incident, one of my Slate 750S’s bit the dust so I bought the Slate AX as a replacement.
Now, I had used the original Slate in a number of environments, it was truly pocket sized, USB as low as 5V 1A could power it and it was a very capable bit of kit, once you added OpenSSH server, TOR, Wireguard etc to it… 😎
The new Slate AX however is, no matter what the title says, NOT pocket sized, unless you have trousers that have a very roomy, bellowed cargo pocket.
In addition, unless you have a USB-C charger that is AT LEAST 20W output, forget about using it.
20W will get it up and running, 18W …. not powering up. Not a graceful, lower power output, runs a bit slower, it won’t power up at all, so be aware that you can’t run this off a laptop or desktop USB-C port or any adapter without 20W or above output.
My biggest bugbear, on security, with the default admin password being “goodlife” across, pretty much all the range has finally been changed to a longer, random alpha string so better than before. The setup is clean and in general intuitive, no issues with connecting to either an ethernet connection or Wi-Fi.
The DDR3L 512MB / NAND Flash 128MB means you have a lot of headroom for installing apps to extend its use and the preset, built in support for various VPN’s makes life a lot easier for non tech folks.
I see this as a home/home office bit of kit not a throw it in your bag when you are travelling bit of kit.
The range of features is good, don’t get me wrong and I am using it to good effect at home ….. but the size and power limitations means I’ll be keeping it firmly in the home and travel with the 750S.
I bought this for “tethering”: use the 5G signal on my phone to provide local WiFi (beyond the limited “personal hotspot” capabilities of the iPhone) in locations without a landline (or, possibly, as a backup). Although a few other brands claim to have such tethering capabilities, the discussion forums are full of failed attempts.
It worked like a dream: the world of routers and similar communications equipment is rarely as trouble-free as this. I plugged the USB-Lightning cable to join the two (the router also provides power to the phone) and, in literally a couple of minutes, I was seeing 100 Mbps download speeds, which is near to what I get directly anyway.
The power adaptor comes with both UK and European plugs, which was nice.
All-in-all, a great device and kudos to GL.iNet.
I’m very happy with the performance of this router. I had the Slate model for years. This is very similar but bigger and better. I was starting to have trouble with the Slate not being able to connect to every wifi network and decided to upgrade. I’m glad I did. The AX has no problem with the newest wifi6 networks when acting as a repeater. It also provides a much stronger and faster connection for clients. The software is very similar to the Slate. I use the built in WireGuard VPN software to connect to my home network. The Slate would top out at about 10 Mbps, but this one maxes out my home connections speed at about 25 Mbps. According to the specs, it should be capable of much faster, but I just haven’t had it connected to a fast enough source to test this yet. It does everything I need, and I’m very happy with it, but I do have a few criticisms. It is substantially bigger than the Slate. It still fits the bill of a travel router, but definitely takes a lot more room in the luggage. It also has substantially higher power requirements and I’m not thrilled with how it’s delivered. This unit takes 20 watts and delivers that with a 5 volt 4 amp adapter. The Slate could run off just about any USB adapter. Try to find an adapter that delivers 4 amps though, or a cable that can handle it. The adapter is big with a thick wire. So, on top of the AX being bigger than the Slate, the power adapter is huge compared to the Slate. I’d say the power adapter alone takes up as much room at the old Slate router. I feel like they should have increased the voltage rather than letting this thing draw 4 amps. That’s what the fast cell phone chargers do. They jump up to 9 volts to reduce the current requirement. That approach doesn’t require a heavy power brick and thick wire. I attached some images with the old Slate and new Slate AX side by side.
I installed this very easily using it in ‘Repeater’ mode connected to my Vodafone 5G mobile hotspot. It works like a charm with better, more reliable, speeds than my landline. I’ve dumped my home landline.
It doesn’t come configured to use the USB port with a printer; but, I just hopped into Luci and installed the software modules kmod-usb-printer, luci-app-p910nd; I then just added a printer using the Luci menu service ‘P910nd-printer service’. Support suggested ‘cups’ but p610nd worked for me with no hassle at all.
My next task is to try nginx/rtmp with my security cameras.
Keeping this review simple……
It’s a great device overall.
– Excellent range/signal strength
– Super fast when running it in vpn mode
– Decent size but their devices are slowly getting larger with every major release. Any larger and it will become noticeable in a travel bag.
– Seems to have stability problems, I have to reboot it every 2-3 days so far. If this continues, I’ll return.
After being thoroughly frustrated in my attempts to make best use of my mobile phone “all inclusive” package via the hotspot function, I discovered this product after watching a YouTube review of the older model.
Now I can connect my phone to this device (either directly using “USB tethering” or by WiFi to the phone hotspot) and then my whole house and all my devices (both dual band and 2.4ghz only) can benefit by connecting to the network broadcast by the GL-AXT1800.
Customer/technical support (whilst not immediate, no doubt due to time zones) is excellent.
I can honestly say that this is my favourite and most useful gadget purchase for quite some time!
Zusammenfassend gefllt mir der Slate AX gut. Im Preis-/ Leistungsverhltnis hat er mich berzeugt.
Positiv:
– Sehr vielfltig einsetzbar
– Gute Geschwindigkeiten
– Einstellungsmglichkeiten fr ungebte und fr gebte Anwender
– gute Verarbeitung
I use mine as an extension of my existing home network to provide VPN connectivity to my TV so I can watch Netflix from other countries or use the popular bay occupied by pirates! Arrrrgh! Geared for advanced users this operates on OpenWRT and is highly customisable. You can install plugins and communicate with the device over SSH. I am currently getting around 130mbps connected to OpenVPN with Nord VPN.
I like this device. It may not be for everyone as WebUI not necessarily allow you to unlock full potential. But if you are open to use OpenWRT Luci interface and maybe a little of remote tweaking with this device – you will find it to be very rewarding. They claim OpenVPN speed to be over 120 Mbps and I have seen numbers even more than 150 Mbps – it depends on protocol, device tweaks and your ISP.
My only concern that this device is running hot and it has fixed configuration to start internal cooling fan for CPU temperature of over 85 degree C. I would love to have option to set it lover when I do not mind a little noise. Potential workaround is to use external USB cooling fan or maybe not to worry about temperature at all, but configuration option will be nice to have.
Only had this a few days and have already used a ‘Mango’ and a ‘mv-1000 Brume W’ which this router was destined to replace, the Brume was fast, reliable, but ran extremely hot but had weak and slow 2.4Ghz wifi hence the purchase of the Slate AX.
The good. The Slate is fast, stable, runs VPN even faster than the Brume and wifi is relatively strong, stronger than the that of the Huawei 4G router I am currently using attached via ethernet to. Fan is silent or not running yet despite case being very warm.
The Bad: This is probably just me but the new firmware from GL.iNet really annoys me, if one goes into the VPN settings then ‘OpenVPN Client’ Nord VPN is hard coded into the firmware as the first option with no way (AFAIK) to remove it and even after setting up an alternative it remains there written in bold. Presumably GL.iNet have taken money from Nord VPN to promote the VPN provider in this way but it still winds me up to see it and gives me some doubts regarding the company in general.
Otherwise great router and good value.
While I admits that I am a massive fan of Gl.iNet (have been lucky enough to acquire most of their products with time and they deserve all customer support) I totally agree with other reviewer that this is not a completely flawless device at this stage (I am yet to see a router that actually is) but I have no doubt that this will go on to become one of the (if not the) best travel and quite likely home routers out there. I have been running it now constantly at home on the latest beta firmware for 2 days and it has been handling 70+ clients with 2 access points with a WiFi signal out of this world and running NextDNS, Wireguard client with VPN policy, remote access…etc. I have not needed to use AdGuard on it yet and I haven’t tried VLAN functionality. The developers are working on this incredibly actively and I cannot wait for Dual LAN functionalities to be added to the UI (and do not get me started on the drop-in gateway magic) as been promised by the developers. It looks like the one I’ve got will be staying at home and I am just getting a second on order from Amazon to use for travel. With all the punch that this carries in such a small package and with the ongoing work to fine tune and polish the software and functionalities, I think that anyone would be able to forgive the minor blemishes at this stage.
I bought this one as an upgrade of the GL Inet Slate, as it supports DFS channels (a lot of hotels use them) and it can run Adguard Home out of the box. It works as a charm, but it is slightly bigger than I expected, not too big though to use as a travel router.
This item is fantastic! I pre-ordered from gl.inet last month before it hit the UK and it is fast fast fast! Comes with adguard home no more pop ups and ads, and also has parental control over content etc. VPN is great, with Open VPN I’m getting around 150mb which is great. Definitely get this product!
