Product is great. Got an email to say item was handed to recipient but I wasn’t at home so was intrigued as to how they managed to do that. Called my neighbour and the item had just been dumped on my lawn for anyone passing by to steal- up your game amazon!!!
I already have the Dr Otek Pinpointer so I knew this detector would work well. I know it is Junior but as a senior I wanted one that is small and light to carry around, and doesn’t look like a large and complicated detector. This one is simple to operate and does the job for me.
Great model for the little ones to get involved in treasure hunting. It is a very basic model, but suits its purpose as it aims at the 3-8 year range. It was easy to setup and use and I would say it is good value for money as it comes with sturdy plastic trowel and sieve and a nice bag to carry it all in. Would recommend!

This metal detector is very easy to setup and will detect to a depth of about 4 inches. It is lightweight and very child friendly. Comes in a nice little bag with trowel and seive. My 8 year old daughter loves it. Also 2 year warranty & battery.
Compact and better quality than expected for the money paid. Quite good penetration into soil (quite clay in my area). Little’en found some stuff, so I expect an activity that will carry on. Nice size & weight for him (5 y/o).
This machine is a great size and price, the extras that come with it are also fantastic.
We can now both go out together and use our machines at the same time.

Went out with my 5yr old who received the metal detector for Christmas and we found a 1907 one penny coin within minutes of using it! Very easy for him to hold by himself and the accessories that come with it are great.

This was a birthday gift for my ten-year-old son. After he opened it, he couldn’t wait to try it out, so we headed to a nearby park with a huge sand-filled play area to try our luck. I wasn’t very hopeful and was trying to manage his expectations. Within a few minutes, however, the green indicator light came on and he started digging. I was expecting a bottle cap, but lo and behold, he found a twenty pence piece (dated 1982)! He was over the moon and as proud of his first treasure as if it had been a gold doubloon. He is looking forward to showing it off at school tomorrow. We are a very pleased Mummy and Daddy!
This has been a great metal detector. Bought for my son for his 7th birthday. I was surprised at just how accurate it is and we have found many metal based items while using it, some of them.buried fairly deep so it has an impressive range on it. Easy to use and fairly lightweight meaning my son can easily use it on his own without any adult help.
My 11 year old was doing a WW2 topic at school and was fascinated with old coins. Although sceptical at first, after much research we opted for this model. I was pleasantly surprised. The unit is so easy to assemble and is lightweight. We have found many old coins. Nothing beats the excitement of digging for treasure! I’d recommend this detector, can’t really think of any negatives.
I purchased this for my 8 yr old son , after the disappointment of a different branded one at Christmas which was useless. Read the reviews on this one and believe them it amazing , He was really excited when it arrived and couldn’t wait to get it out the box , 5 minutes and he was up and running and tried it out in the garden as I didn’t really want my lawn dug up , we later took it to the beach and with in 5 minutes were 1.60 in profit and one amazed happy lad . we also found several bottle caps and tent pegs and a spoon some of which were buried quite deep in the sand , once it detects a metal the 3 different Coloured led lights let you know what you found , then press one button and it will pin point your find to the exact spot , the wire runs inside the tubing so it cant be damaged and the coil is waterproof and also comes with a 9 volt battery clear instructions and set of pirate stickers for younger ones.
Yes its on the pricey side for a child but I think it well worth the money and hours of fun and entertainment.
Bought this for going to the beach with my 11 year old son in the hopes of finding treasure. So far testing it in a privately owned field and it works pretty well. I am 5 foot 7 and it extended long enough for me to use comfortably. I went along with someone with a grown up detector, and it picked up the same signals, the pin point mode is really good, and not often included in kids models. Found a few bits and pieces, the lights are really handy as if you want to avoid digging up old nails, you know to avoid the red flashing lights.
I would say perfect for kids and beginners as it is light and easy to work and understand, very happy with purchase.
This is a great wee piece of kit. I bought for my daughter to use on the beach. We have been testing it in the garden and have found some wee trinkets we thought were long gone! In the house we can follow the pipe work which is interesting.

This unit can be used by adults and children alike as it’s adjustable and reasonably sturdy. It is also quite sensitive especially in the house it picks up all the pipework!
This product was a birthday present for my grandson aged 7 years. It is very light to hold which is a positive as he is only slight in build and small for his age, so he is able to hold it with no problems. The control box looks nice and neat and lights up vividly to show when anything is found. This makes it interesting for him, waiting eagerly for it to flash green continuously.
Overall a really good product , excellent for young children just starting out.
My son was interested in buying a ‘toy’ metal detector, but I suspected that it would not work very well and break pretty quick and end up in land fill!
I’m glad we found this DR.TEK model, as it’s robust enough to give to a 5 year old, but it actually works and should have lasting appeal.

We bought this for our 5 year old. He loves it and it works a treat. We were able to use it on the beach and in the garden over some muddy areas. It is lightweight enough for him to use and easy to operate.
If I could, I’d suggest two improvements; A 2nd handle on the top as it was a little awkward for my little one to sweep across the ground. Another handle over the top would enable more control. Or possibly a carrying strap would help.
The second improvement would be to have a cover over the light up LED. This is the green or blue indicator that tells the user what sort of metal they have found. Unfortunately we found it impossible to see in the bright daylight. Making this LED smaller would make it easier to see I believe.
I bought one of these for each of my children as they are very into finding ‘treasure’. They have just turned 5 and I do think that this is still a bit heavy and big for them to hold and move around properly, but with a bit of help from Mum and Dad they have been great. It is very simple to operate, with an on switch, and then a pinpoint button for when you know you’ve found something.
We have taken it out a few times and had a mixture of success. We have yet to find anything very small with it, but it has found various medium metal objects including an old railways pin.
It has provided a lot of fun and I think when the kids are a bit older and have a little more patience it will be even better.
Great detector that was pretty much usable straight out of the box – even came with a battery (we had purchased one at the same time so as to use as soon as it arrived).
Really easy for them to use and understand the different flashing lights for different metals.
The two modes are useful too – especially when on the beach looking for things.
Lightweight enough but still appears to be strong enough to stand up to a 7 year olds treatment!
Would be great if the sounds were a bit louder but will check to see if we have them on the highest setting, as the waves crashing in at the beach drowned it out but that said the flashing lights were very visible in daylight.

First metal detector for my daughter. Easy to use and light-weight. We took it too the beach and located and dug for metal objects. The LED display can be difficult to see in bright, direct sun.
Purchased this item as well as a similar product from another brand. Ended up sending that one back and keeping this one instead. It’s SO lightweight, literally clipped together and was ready to use in seconds, and works fantastically. We hid some metal objects in the garden for our son to find and try it out.. worked perfectly. Ideal for children to hunt together as it’s more of a sociable activity if they don’t need to wear headphones. Colour coded display is fab, though we just start digging as soon as we hear the continuous alert regardless of what colour it is!! Brill.
Bought this for my sons eighth birthday & he absolutely loves it although I have to take a turn too ! Very lightweight for him to use – he had used one belonging to his older cousin but found it too heavy & difficult to operate easily. The detector folds up to fit in a rucksack – ideal if a farmer is approaching ! Got a feeling this is the start of a long lasting hobby ( for Dad & lad!)
So far so good, after a few dodgy reviews about another kids detector I decided to go for the drotekor. Very simple to use and put together for kids. The main concern I had was how effective the device would be to detect objects but so far this hasn’t let us down. We gave it a trial run over a field and it worked perfectly. Detected buried objects under the earth. Can’t wait to use this on the beach!

There are quite a few very cheap Chinese metal detectors that seem suitable for kids. After quite a bit of research and videos I came across the Dr Otek brand. The videos helped convince me this was the right one for my kids. Its lovely quality, works great, probably even works a bit deeper than its stated 8 inches and is very simple to use. I am very happy with my purchase and its great to get the kids outside to see what we can detect!!
Bought this for 7 year old daughter and she loves it. The prospect of finding cash on the beach and gold trinkets in the fields holds a strange attraction for her.
The detector has found a variety of metals from small ringpulls to large bits of old farm machinery. Sadly we’re unlikely to retire on the scrap value but it’s still interesting.
It seems capable of detecting larger items which are over 30cm deep in sand or soil. It does struggle with very wet ground but this may apply to all detectors.
While you can adjust the volume of the beeps it would have been nice to have a headphone jack, but that’s a vague wish more than a criticism.
I was very surprised how light it is and the fact it runs on a single 9 volt battery is frankly hard to believe. I thought we had bought a mere toy but it has proved quite capable.
It is so adjustable so it can be made short for a child or just about long enough for a 6 foot 2 big kid 🙂
A definite bargain for an introduction to metal detectors.
Santa brought this for my 8 year daughter I was a bit sceptic when i seen it on the Santa list I did a bit of research found this to be middle ground of the kids metal detectors available not to cheap not to dear
It turned out to be a good bit of kit she loves went to the beach found lots of pipes cans spoons but no gold but we are still looking the deepest item was at least 6 inches down , the different metal indicators are good make sure you have a good trowel for digging
And patience unfortunately there is not a lot of lost gold and silver out there to my daughters disbelief she thought she be rich instantly
To sum it up great bit of kit for kids to start of with and if they the use it more and more look at buying a more accurate one

The build quality seems sturdy and the sensativity is outstanding. It is very clear when there is a find with no false readings.
I found it very simple to put together and use.
I would say it is a perfect for not just kids but adult beginners as well as it is such a good piece of kit.
I am looking forward to getting out on the beach with it with my son.
Bought this for my 6 year old son to use when out and about. Easy to assemble and once set up it is easy enough for him to use, he especially liked customising it with the pirate stickers that came with it. I shallow buried a selection of coins and metal objects in our garden…he managed to find them all (even though i forgot where half of them were!), so it does work! I’m sure he’ll enjoy using it for some time and it’ll come in handy if i ever loose stuff myself.
This detector is well built, light to hold, and extremly sensative. My 7 year old son loves treasure hunting at the beach or anywhere else he feels could be laden with treasure!
Comes with the required 9 volt battery, which makes a nice change as most things that require batteries rarely do these days.
Very impressed with the ease of use, and assembly, and although plastic in construction, it feels more than solid enough for the job.
I would be more than happy to recommend this to anyone who is looking for a detector for their child or any other explorer they are looking to buy for.
The detector was a Christmas present for my 6 year old grandson, who was very excited on opening it. He finds it a little heavy, and needed a little help, but I suspect a support strap would make things easier. The instructions were easy to follow and the detector simple to use. One setting for general detection and the other to pinpoint the find. It appears to work well. The LEDs glowing green for a 5p piece and red for a rusty Allen key on it’s first treasure hunt in the woods. My grandson was thrilled by the discoveries, and looking forward to the next expedition. Recommended
Simple set up, robust feel and appears to be constructed from quality components. Good packaging with clear instructions. Have used now on two occasions with results as expected. Can not compare to any other similar items, as have not used a child metal detector previously, however does provide a comparable experience to those used professionally. Ideal for the young learner in my opinion. A fifth star may be deserved following further trials!

Great product and super easy to use! My 8 year old daughter put it together herself and figured out how it worked!it is very lightweight and great for young children as well as adults. We had hours of endless fun on the beach searching for treasure and have also used it all around the house looking for money. We purchased this for our daughter, it was really easy to put together and light enough for our 5 year old to use easily. It also extends so we could use it too. We’ve had a few plays with it at the beach, when it detects metal its lights up either red or green indicating iron or nickel i think. Overall we have been really pleased with the metal detector, we are no experts but feel it is a really good start for a child/beginner.

Instant feedback and interactivity in terms of sound and indicator lights that children from the age of 4 or 5 could interpret effectively.
Detection depth is surprisingly very good, at least 6 inches and the pinpoint setting is impressive.
I have 2 children and bought this as a joint gift to share, but I am already considering getting another as the product is perfect.
All in all, this not only gets us out the house for longer periods, but makes it all very adventurous and unpredictable, which is great for young exploring minds.

Purchased this for my grandson for Christmas, but had to test it myself first. It’s a great little piece of kit and would recommend it for any children 8+ .. It comes with a battery supplied, which is a great plus in my book, it’s does what it says, it’s not bulky and folds for storage. Above all it will get him out in the fresh air and not glued to his switch.
My only criticism is the packaging, a nice box is always nicer and more attractive than the plain cardboard box it comes in. I thought it was the transport packaging and would find a nice box inside to wrap as a present.

Just had this arrive for my sons birthday. Hes not tried it yes as it’s a gift for a few weeks time however I just put it together to check it was ok and it seems great. The display screen is easy to understand. It’s nice and light and extended for me to use it and I’m 5ft 4. It goes very small too so will be perfect for him and will grow with him. Sounds are a good volume. Only downside is no headphone socket but you can turn volume off if it’s really annoying and then just use visual. Cant wait for him to try it out soon.

Okay, enough of that. We bought this metal detector for my youngest (8yr). Very straightforward to assemble right out of the box.
The controls are nice and clear. It only took the kids a couple of minutes before they were comfortable scanning and homing in on some test items.
On the beach it seemed to work very well, we found something within 5 minutes of scanning and in a half hour walk we had a selection of metal bits and bobs that had been discovered (no jewellery or pirates treasure though, unfortunately).
All in all, I can’t fault it.
It’s good value, and stood up to being enthusiastically bumped around, and dipped in the sea with no issues.
Bought for my boy and he loves it! It works really well and we have found things burried at least 5 inches under the ground or in sand.
His grandfather was very impressed by it also (I think that he wanted one himself!!!)
Accuracy in the pinpoint mode is not 100%; it gets you in the region, but you might have to dig around a bit – however, for what it is and the cost of it, it is very good.
Plenty light enough for kids and easy to use but I guess most units are designed to be light. Distinguishes between metal types with three diff tones and coloured lights.
Red = Iron Alloy
Green = Copper Aluminium Silver
Blue = Nickel Zinc Alloy Palladium
Volume control levels off or 1 or 2. Detection depth seems to be about 15cm through air, I guess less through ground but still enough to find plenty of treasures in our back garden. Found a half penny! Pin point function works well with an increasingly rapid beep like parking sensors as you centre right over the metal. This is needed because when you dig it’s actually v hard to find small pieces, coins etc.
IMO Worth the extra money over some of the unbranded junk out there for the added functionality. Well built.
Bought for 6 yr old and it was a big hit. It seems to work well and he found most of the buried ‘treasure’ (coins) as well as a previously lost item – impressed!
Had difficulty seeing the green light outdoors but there is a beep.
I’ve been promising myself a metal detector for a while as I couldn’t see any more nails but I was sure there must be some.
Delivery:
The MT9s arrived very promptly in perfect condition and once the battery was inserted I was detectoring within minutes.
Using it:
It took a couple of trials to get used to the Disc Mode and PinPoint mode and the various noises. I’ve never used a metal detector before. But very soon I was finding all sorts of things and started to second guess what I was looking for due to the lights/sound feedback. The photo shows the hauls from three 15 minute periods, none of these items were visible to the naked eye because they were hiding in the gravel (on the left of the picture). And I found an unexpected penny!

Even without the penny, the MT9s has probably paid for itself within the first day of use 🙂
It is very light and folds up so it won’t be difficult to store. The shaft is quite short but it is designed for children. I’m only 5’1″ and I’m not using it at full length.
Slight criticism:
My only slight criticism is that there is no earphone socket. I hadn’t realised how annoying the sound is, to me and my neighbours, even when the volume is at the lowest setting. I guess this is because I am finding so much! I can’t see it’s very usable in silent mode because I’m focussing on the ground, not the lights.
I hope this helps a couple of people. I’m very pleased with the purchase and am enjoying using it – I have to stop myself going out for “just another short session”
We gave this as a gift for my grandsons 9th birthday. It was quick and easy to set up and very lightweight which in turn allowed him to use it for a prolonged period. He was so excited to discover his first ‘treasure’, a ball point pen. This gave him the incentive to keep going and he now uses it every weekend at our local beach. He has kept a shoe box with all his finds and his metal detector is his favourite pass time. The detector is exactly what we were looking for. The instructions are easy to understand which is important for young children. Also being light weight and accurate has contributed to his box of treasures. It’s great to see him out doors all the time and participating in such a educational pastime. I would highly recommend for your young enthusiasts.
This is a pretty good quality piece of equipment. We have used it and tested it in our backyard and it worked perfectly. A little heavy for a 5 year old but our 8 year old uses it with ease. The excitement of digging up any find is worth the price alone. I was surprised that it detected items over a foot in depth. The 18cm range seems to be legit. The control box is easy to operate and gives clear indication of hits and noise level and handle simple to adjust. It’s light bit sturdy. I’m glad we went with this over the cheaper options available.
Setting the detector up for first use takes mere seconds with the included 9V battery. Make sure you have a posi screwdriver handy for the battery compartment. Once the battery is in it’s just a case of turning it on and away you go. There’s no manual tuning to do, it’s all automatic.
We were gobsmacked at the amount of targets this thing found in our back garden. Fortunately I have a small patch of ground that I didn’t mind the kids digging up so I let my 6 year old daughter loose on it to give this detector a proper test.
Three hours later, she’s got over 20 finds. She wasn’t even bothered they were all rusty bolts and screws. There’s always the possibility of finding treasure!
The feature that make’s this detector a winner for the kids is the different sounds and lights it puts out depending on what metal you’re swinging over. If you’ve found some old iron junk it will flash red with a low tone. Find some nickel, have a green light and a higher pitch tone. Silver? Blue light and an even higher pitch tone. This is a concept kids will grasp quickly and takes the frustration out of digging up junk (unless they’re anything like my daughter!)
One thing that may catch you out is the inductive switches/buttons on the control unit. The Disc/PP button on our unit has a sweet spot that’s slightly below the printed graphic. Make sure you show your kids exactly where to touch on the unit otherwise this could be a problem.
I’ll revisit this review to comment on durability. I have no concerns though. There’s a 2 year warranty that takes a couple of minutes to set up on their website.
I have absolutely no regrets choosing this detector for my kids and am considering buying one of the bigger models for myself once I bag a few land permissions!
Like many others, my wife and I are HUGE fans of the BBC’s DETECTORISTS. She has just surprised me with this amazing little detector for my birthday, and I COMPLETELY love it. As total novice noobs we couldn’t justify spending a fortune on a “grown-up” detector, plus we have kids, so this is a perfect option for us to play around and have some fun, without going all in.
It’s designed for children, but it’s not a toy, it really really works, we’ve just spent 20 mins in our garden and have dug up half a dozen old nails, and by total fluke, as we dug for one rusty old nail, we unearthed a (pretty early I think!?) clay pipe bowl! A genuine piece of archeology, literally in our back yard! We never would have found it if we hadn’t been detecting with our new machine!
Ideal for my 8 year old as well as fun for us adults! Fairly easy to use and very light weight. The colour system makes it easy to read. The only thing I would say is that it uses the batteries fairly quickly. Make sure you have a good supply of energizers or Duracell! Lots of fun though and very addictive!
Purchase for a 6 year old boy. Perfect starting detector for him. Light and easy to operate without an adult. It doesn’t come with a cover/case but I think for an additional cost this would be a welcome extra. Lights on the detector are not always easy to see in the daylight, hence the 4*, however I’m not sure whether other detectors do this any better.
It was easy to set up and ready to go in minutes. Simple to use, my two children and got the hang of using it really quickly and have already found a selection of treasures in the back garden (the lawn might take a bit of a hammering from this, but it’s all good fun).
Like how this compacts down for storage and also for day trips out. Its very lightweight too.
It has the capability of more grown-up detectors, yet it’s been simplified enough for children to understand. It has colour-coded discrimination to make it easy to distinguish between potentially good targets and bad ones, and it seems to detect coins really well up to a depth of about 6 inches, which is AMAZING! There’s a pinpoint function too, which helps to locate the exact position of the target. Functionality wise, this is a way better kids detector that most of the others on the market, in my opinion.
The only fault I can find is that it’s designed for single-handed use but most children would probably prefer to use 2 hands (hockey stick style). That said, it can easily be used with one hand on the handle and a second hand further down the stem so it’s not really an issue.
The bottom line is, I absolutely love this detector as it’s perfect for my kids and well worth the money. You should buy it!
