The product is exactly as described. Soaking the bag over night was a bit tricky since it kept floating the the surface but despite my doubt I did have a decent first mushroom harvest and am now onto round two.
We’ll see, if I can reuse the mycelium for a whole new batch of mushrooms.
This was a gift which greatly pleased the recipient, an interesting change from socks and underpants!
It’s been started off-on Boxing Day- and is doing very well, developing visibly every day. Lots of little mushrooms already. Can’t yet comment on the taste, but it seems to be very easy to grow. And a very prompt delivery, thank you.
We bought these mushroom kits as gifts for our son and son in law. We have had one ourselves and it was great seeing the mushrooms growing and then able to cook and eat them. They are intrigued and pleased with them. Our son is already planning a steak dinner to accompany them!
My kit arrived fast, even though I ordered on a bank holiday weekend! I’m a first time grower, I followed the instructions, but didn’t have any initial success. This is where GroCycle excelled and why I would definitely buy again. I emailed them with photos and they got straight back to me with advice and further instructions should it not work. Well, a few days later I had results with a lovely bunch of tiny pins.
4 days further on and I’m sitting here enjoying some of my first flush in a lovely snack.
I’m so impressed. I will be buying again. Thanks so much GroCycle. The support was amazing and the mushroom are equality amazing!
ot sure if i harvested too soon as they only took 7 days
Followed the instructions and before I knew it mushrooms came bursting out. 1 important tip, you need to cook this type longer than your normal mushrooms or they will be tough to eat.
Instructions were confusing as box and leaflet contradict each other. We’ve had 1 harvest so far and produce meaty mushrooms of various sizes. Our 2nd attempt is taking longer than the first. You can buy cheaper elsewhere but its not a bad kit for the price
These were fun. Couldn’t get a second flush, probably I didn’t soak it enough and I wasn’t consistent with spraying. Happy with the initial yield i got though. I wouldn’t get it again, just because I think it’s more cost effective to make and grow from my own spawn. Although I would consider buying this as a gift.
No complaints at all, fast delivery and great product, so easy to grow
Without a doubt, one of my favourite products i have ever had from Amazon. In fact, I was very disappointed to find this is not currently available as I had planned to give some as Christmas gifts. Hopefully they will be back soon. I’d long been curious about mushroom growing kits, but hadn’t really expected them to be as easy, quick, or rewarding as this one was. Although you are guaranteed a crop and the packaging claims the mushrooms will be ready to eat in two weeks, it still feels like magic to observe the process. The kit comes as a grow bag inside a cardboard box. The white mycelium is already visible throughout the grow bag. The manufacturers suggest that you begin the process of growing within a month. I think I actually took just a little longer than that, but it still worked. You punch out a panel on the cardboard box, remove the grow bag and cut an x – shape in it, then soak it in water for a few hours. After that, you return the bag to the box and simply water it a couple of times a day and keep it out of direct sunlight. Around a week into this process and slavishly following the instructions, I was frustrated by the lack of any signs of life. But I had no sooner started grumbling about this to my nearest and dearest than I found a couple of hard lumps pushing through the bags. To my untrained eye, they bore no resemblance to mushrooms. But within a day or two, they had come out all over in tiny little bristles, each with a grey cap no bigger than the head of a pin. From then on, it was a case of watching them grow and develop every day. I ended up waiting to harvest mine at about 3 weeks, and I’d say I let them go ever so slightly too long, although they were still incredibly tasty and we had enough to generously serve two of us mushrooms on toast as a main course. Now a few days into the process of growing the second crop and although I expect it to be a case of diminishing returns, I am looking forward to watching the process again. This kit would be ideal for any mushroom lover and I particularly wonder why I’ve not seen similar kits marketed for children. The life cycle is absolutely fascinating to watch and yields dramatic results so much more quickly than plants, with the bonus of a tasty edible at the end. The mushrooms change so dramatically in such a short space of time that I found myself checking on them multiple times a day as it seemed they could almost double in size from morning to afternoon. If all you want is the mushrooms, this is a pricey way of getting them. But for a fun and fascinating process with tasty results, these kits are fantastic.
I cannot review the mushroom pack properly as I am giving them for a Christmas present. They arrived on time and well packed.
I’m sure my niece will enjoy growing them as they are her favourite food and look easy to grow.
The GroCycle gormet mushroom grow kit I brought as a gift for my farther. The delivery was excellent and on time, packaged neatly. The grow kit is an excellent interactive gift. The instructions are simple to follow, soaking the mushroom substrate package and allowing to fruit. As with all things in nature the process can take time. This is not an “insta, just add water” and your mushrooms arrive, product. But real live natural process from spawn to fruiting mushrooms and delicious dinner.
For my farther this was an enjoyable process to follow. Initially while the mushrooms are spawning, it requires a little patience of 2 to 3 weeks. However, then suddenly the mushrooms begin to appear! This moment is worth the wait and exciting when the mushrooms arrive and begin to develop.
Harvesting the mushrooms to cook up a delicious meal is really rewarding. Furthermore, the multiple fruiting phases of the mushroom block means that the process is repeated multiple times. The feedback from my father has been very positive, and I will definitely gift this mushroom grow kit again. I think I would really like to capture the full fruiting phase of the mushrooms with these kits using a time lapse camera. Time to order a kit for myself now Thank you very much GroCycle!
Thought I’d try this product before buying for a gift and wasn’t disappointed. Simple to follow instructions and really interesting to watch the mushrooms grow. As you can see from the photos you get a bumper harvest of mushrooms which are really tasty. Great idea for Christmas presents for adults and also for children as it teaches them different ways of growing food. Fun and useful – what’s not to like.
Great grow bag. Easy to open. Oysters started to grew after only few days and in a week there were decent size mushrooms. No bad smell and taste great.
I just loved this kit and can’t wait to buy it for someone as a gift. It would be perfect for a family with young children.
It was so simple to use – even for someone who hates reading instructions! Just cut the bag, soak it in water overnight, then pop it back in the box and wait for the magic to happen. It was a real thrill to see the mushroom appear and then grow each day. They were not only beautiful to look at but tasted delicious! I made a Korean rice dish with them and they had a rich, deep flavour.
Highly recommended!
Looked at these for a while now, and I was over the moon when they popped up for review !!
Such an easy kit to use, and even easier to get started growing your own gourmet mushrooms …. all you need is water !!
Kit comes with full easy to follow instructions, and the growing medium and spores have already been prepared for you.
All you need to do is cut a cross in the bag, soak overnight, then spray them with water twice a day…. its that simple !!
Just set mine up, and really looking forward to eating and cooking with the results.
Kit even comes with a code for 15% off your next order too which is a bonus !
Would definitely recommend
I was optimistic but surprised how quick and easy this was. Instructions are simple, although it doesn’t state the obvious which is to remove the bag from the box before soaking. I carefully cut out the panel on the front of the box, then made the two cuts with a sharp knife. I removed the bag from the box and put it face down (with cut facing downwards) in a washing up bowl full of cold tap water. I did that in the early evening and left it there until the next afternoon. I let the bag stand in the garden for 30 minutes to let the outside dry off. I gave it a wipe off and put the bag back into the box, being careful to keep the cuts facing the opening on the front of the box. I placed it onto the lounge floor under the window sill, facing the patio doors at the other end of the lounge. Within just a few days the mushrooms were starting to emerge. You can see the difference in size every day. This makes it great for children to get involved with. I have to admit that I didn’t mist them twice a day as the instructions said to do but fortunately it didn’t seem to have any ill effects on the mushrooms. We had them to eat in a delicious risotto. I’m now letting the box rest for 2 weeks before repeating the process for the second time.
All of the prep work is now done so we are eagerly awaiting out first crop! If they grow as fast as all the toadstools currently popping up in my garden plant pots we will have mushrooms in no time! The instructions are informative and easy to follow, there are also some great videos on the GroCycle website. This kit is a little expensive, when you see how much these mushrooms are at the supermarket, but there really is nothing like growing your own food. I think kids would really enjoy this as a project too
Good quick delivery and such an easy way to grow mushrooms. First tasty crop were consumed within 14 days and the second crop of one giant specimen is shown. Will now turn the inner bag around and start with a new crop from the other side. These growing kits will be extra Christmas presents for all the men in the family.
We bought two kits- one for ourselves and one for our grandsons who live some distance away from us and had a competition to see who could grow the most. Easy to follow instructions and within a week we had our first crop coming through. It was a race to see who could grow the most. It’s neck and neck and we are on our second harvest- literally the gift that keeps on giving. We went with oyster mushrooms and they taste great – had a risotto.
Our grandsons thought these were brilliant and followed the instructions to the letter and learned a lot.
These would make a great gift for anyone (who likes mushrooms), simple to grow and fun too. Would definitely recommend – great customer service and speedy delivery.
Great education gift for the kids, we planted these together and the kids just loved watching them grow in super speed. We bought a book to go with our new micro hobby (planting mushrooms and fungi) and the kids really got into it.
Sometimes it does not take much to get the kids away from the computers when you have a set ready like this that is able to demonstrate the value of planting our own food, this was also a great opportunity to talk about the benefits and dangers of fungi.
At first I was skeptical of this, but then mushrooms started coming though in 4 days!
It’s a pretty easy kit, and fun for kids. Simply take out the block from the box, cut an x in it, soak it in water over night (I used the washing up bowl) and place back in the cardboard box holder. Sunlight, occasional spraying with water, and watch them appear! The growth rate was incredible.
After about 7 days they went soggy – so definitely harvest when they’re looking big and plump, and let the next lot come through.
A great eco set and good practical science for kids. If buying as a gift remember this is a live product and will need to be used within 4 weeks.
This mushroom growing kit seems to arrive in good condition. It’s important to recognise that it’s alive spores, so the box states the kit needs to be used within 4 weeks.
I’ve had button mushroom kits before but I’ve not tried any other varieties. The kit is easy to do: pop the perforated opening and cut a cross into the outer film. The lid can be opened to slide the bag out which then needs to be soaked overnight. The box needs to be kept in a dark place — I’ve got mine in the garage.
There were already signs of growth when I got this: the compost is full of spores and looks good quality. No harvestable mushrooms yet, but they’re growing.
his was so much fun to do and grow watching them grow and then harvesting your own mushrooms.
great as a gift for some or as an activity to show kids the life cycle where mushrooms break down plant waste.
i would recommed sitting this on a tray or somehting as the box gets a bit damp and this way it will save some mess
These mushrooms are fascinating to grow, I still can’t believe that these have grown on my kitchen side!
To activate the mushroom mixture, you soak the contents of the box in water overnight and then remove and leave to rest back in the box. Within a few days some little sprouts started appearing, one week later I have an army of mushrooms bulging out of the box! They are growing bigger each day, I can’t wait to see how big they actually get before it’s time to harvest them. Once harvested apparently you can soak the bag again and then get an additional harvest from them.
This is a fun little activity for anyone of any age, very easy to do and its fascinating watching them grow!
This is my second batch and I have enjoyed growing my own. Easy to set up and get results fairly quickly but I wonder about the price, whether it’s cost effective to get mushrooms this way. I think it’s great as an experiment especially for kids and would highly recommend them having the experience of growing them. But as a culinary stable? A bit on the pricey side.
This is an expensive (and somewhat haphazard) way to buy mushrooms, but that’s not the point. Assuming you manage to get the mushrooms to grow (this is my third experience of them and none have failed — yet!), you will derive enjoyment from growing them, have something with which to impress visitors, an item that is decorative, and in the end enjoy several servings of mushrooms.
Having slashed the poly-bag as indicated, I soaked it for 12 hours and then set the re-boxed bag with compost and mushroom spore upright in a coolish place in my scullery that received daylight, but never direct sunlight (ambient temperature mostly 14-17C).
That temperature seemed to be fine for them (I read somewhere that it should always be above 10C). After a couple of days, slight smudges on the surface of the growing medium became definite pinheads and, a day or so after that, recognizable mushrooms. They continued to grow apace — the claim that they double in size every day is not an overstatement — and well inside the forecast fortnight I had a crop of mushrooms.
I took a series of photographs, but am not mounting them here, impressive as they are, because the timelapse video provided by the seller at the top of this page beats all. That really is exactly how they grow.
And so to the culinary side of things. Would they taste of anything, and, if so, would it be pleasant? I’m not wild about oyster mushrooms — they take more cooking and don’t taste as good as the standard supermarket mushrooms or those that — yes! — I pick from the wild. These are a bit leathery and in cooking they take up a lot of liquid. The latter is fine, though, and when sauting I soon learned to add water to the pan as well as olive oil (or other cooking oil or margarine).
Boil off the water that isn’t taken up by the mushrooms and your mushrooms are ready to eat. What do they taste of? Really only the fried oil and any seasoning you added — salt/pepper.
So, out of consideration of both the cost and the eating properties of the end-product, you won’t be making these a regular addition to your Delia Smith activities (as you might a pot of parsley), but they make a super present for anyone with basic indoor gardening skills (or just capable of following simple instructions) and for whom seeing mushrooms develop and grow is likely to be a novelty.
I will attempt a second crop from the same bag of compost and spores. That will be a bonus if it works out, and I won’t complain if it doesn’t.
Extremely easy to grow by just a couple sprays of water each day, yield is amazing and thames taste amazing when cooked. Would advise people to give it a go atleast once as it is very rewarding
Nice product. the more products like this the better.
I would not mind having a little farm of different easy-to-grow and fast-to-grow vegetables. I would love to take care of them and then use them for whatever meal.
These oyster mushrooms came exactly after two weeks as “prescribed”.
There is a lot of fun in this, even for adults. Great for sharing this experience with kids or your partner too.
The mushrooms tasted really well.
One may find this mushroom kit expensive and frankly speaking, it comes pricey as there is still a long way to democratize in price this kind of indoor farming mushroom product. But at this time, it is not about the price, it is about the experience, putting yourself in the shoes of a farmer, and connecting with nature. This product, if buying for yourself is definitely for mushrooms’ fanatics. That being said, the price would not be an issue for you.
Very well-thought product with interesting characteristics and lots of fun.
If you have a camera with plenty of memory you can even record your experience in real time and keep it for yourself or share it with others.
Not sure if someone noticed this but it is quite an important message, but one box can produce between 2-3 crops. Read the text on the side where the big circle is, at the bottom. This great. X2 or x3 more fun and fancy mushroom eating.
I bought this product hoping to show my grandchildren the growing cycle and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We have had a lovely crop of mushrooms, very tasty and we are looking forward to our next crop. Easy to grow and amazing to see them develop. I would have no hesitation in recommending
This is a great idea. I’ve used home grown mushroom kits before, with mixed success. This one is simple and although the crop isn’t quite ready, I’m impressed with how quickly they’ve grown.
The outer box is card and the only thing to watch is where you p,ace it. The base can become a little soggy. Mine is on a porcelain tiled floor, so any wet or damp is easy to wipe and dry off. If you put it on a wooden cupboard or shelf, you might want to put some protection under the box to make sure there’s no damage to furniture.
It’s a great and unusual gift idea and has excellent novelty value. And with the orice of exotic oyster mushrooms, it’s good value too. Very happy to recommend.
This was such a great family activity! This kit had really clear instructions and online help videos too; not that we really needed extra help but we found them interesting and helped capture our toddler’s imagination straight away. We had a first yield of very tasty mushrooms within a few days and I think we will have another yield soon. They’re delicious and the whole family had fun checking how much they’d grown each morning!
We have been talking about autumn, life cycles and where food comes from, so this kit was a simple way to make this part of our day even in our upstairs city flat.
Great kit! Looking forward to giving some as presents! Thanks!
These gourmet mushrooms are amazing!
Just cant get over how it just grown in a week. They are not ready yet but getting there.
The box is very simple to use, just cut out the plastic and spray it twice a day. And magic happens!
Perfect gift for someone who loves mushrooms.
O absolutely do recommend it!
Fairly simple to use.
This is what you do
First cut a square in the front of the box (perforations tell you where to cut)
Then carefully cut a cross in the bag, this is where the mushrooms will grow from.
Then soak the bag in water overnight, cut side down, I used a washing up bowl.
Not sure mine was soaked enough as it was still floating in the morning, I put the bag sideways for a bit to get some water in, we’ll see how it goes.
Next drain the bag a bit and put it back in the box with the part where you cut showing through the cut out square.
Put it in a light place but out of direct sunlight, spray or dribble water onto the open part twice a day and wait for the magic.
I put mine on my windowsill even though it’s South facing as we don’t get that much sun at this time of year, not in the hills of Lancashire anyway. If it gets very warm and sunny I will move the box.
I put an old towel under it initially to catch any drips, I’ll remove it later.
I’m hoping to grow a nice crop of mushrooms, until then I’m giving four stars for ease of setup, if I get a nice crop then I’ll update and post photos.
This was a gift for my husband. He loves it. Hes already picked mushrooms and only had it approximately two weeks. Now waiting for next picking. Would definitely recommend. A gift with a difference.
First crop grew very quickly and seems to be superb now waiting for the second crop! It’s amazing watching these oyster mushrooms grow, now hooked on this as a hobby so will be buying more and looking to grow larger quantities..
It so simple to set up open the box and water mist daily in 14 days you have your own mushrooms to crop yourself. I have mine in the kitchen.
Makes a perfect gif
Update 21st Oct: Well 7 days after I started the kit the mushrooms have started to grow. Only thing I have found so far is that the carboard box you keep the kit in gets very wet at the bottom as the water you spray on the mushrooms runs down I don’t think it will last very long. I will have to be more careful with the watering.
This looks to be a great grow your own mushroom kit. It will take around 14 days before I can harvest them and apparently nothing much happens in the first 7 so once something starts growing I will post back with the results. The instructions are for the most part clear but their web site has some far clearer instructional videos on what to do and I recommend watching them before you start. So provisionally I’ll give it a thumbs up. UK company.
