We have tried all the DIY method to make it work without buying the shims adaptors, carboard, rubber, plastic but at the end these shim is the perfect solution.
The metal is coated with ridges on the outer surface, once pinched against the handlebar it forms a really strong grip, I have not needed to adjust or tighten after a day of riding in the woods.
