Attract A Variety Of Insects To Your Garden

The UK has a wide variety of insects and they need your help. A lot of the insect populations are in decline with constant building on land that homed them. They are happy to move to pastures new but they need a source of food and a place to stay safe. Having even a small area of flowers in your garden or balcony will help to attract many insects of a wide variety to your outdoor space. Having insects is good for pollenating plants but it also encourages birds and other wildlife to your garden.

Cute and a nice garden gift for anyone that likes the outside world. At least with this you don’t have to look after it like a plant so that’s good for anyone that isn’t that great with plants. Takes up little room if placed on on wall, fence or where ever it’s placed. Not sure how it will weather come winter months.
Makes a different kind of gift too for someone if not just yourself. Reasonably priced for a gift I think.

This is a cute small bee house/insect home.
It’s designed to be weather resistant with metal roof that rain runs off and prevents rotting.
It also has a hanging bracket.
It’s strong and durable and made from natural wood like pinewood and bamboo.
The instructions say to hand it in a sheltered area five to eight foot above the ground.
There is also a cleaning brush to clean the channels.
I put it next to the sunflowers around 5ft high on a post right behind them and to be honest nothings used it yet but I guess it take time and need to loose its new smell to attract the insects better so within time,I hope to be helping out little friends. The kids love checking i

    As described and as advertised.

Well packaged and presented — this would make a lovely gift for gardeners looking for a little help with the pollinators or for general wildlife enthusiasts.

The beehive/bee house is well made in a relatively simple design but is well made.

Simple to use, good instructions on the back of the box in terms of where to put it, comes with an easy-to-use hanging bracket on the back that is strong enough to hold the hive’s weight without issue.

A nice little cleaning brush is provided. This means you can clean out each of the nesting channels quickly and easily after use.

We think this would’ve been a better gift if it included a little bit more information about bees. This could’ve been links via QR code to websites with general information, how to identify different species, how to tell if the larvae have hatched, et cetera.

Also including a small packet of wildflower seeds would’ve made this even better — Especially if the seeds were for flowers known to be potentially attractive to bees.

Good all-round nice gift idea but we can’t comment on longevity yet we’ll have to how this weathers but we like the metal roof cover that offers better rain protection.

This is a well made insect hotel, the drilled holes and the bamboo tubes give a variety of tunnel sizes which will attract and suit a number of different insects. It does not appear to be treated with any preservatives which is good as it means that the places where the insects will investigate, will be completely safe for them. The metal roof will give the hotel some longevity, however they do suggest that you take it down in the Autumn and put it back up the following Spring.

At the time of my review this insect hotel by The Garden Locker Store would cost you 14.99, which is quite reasonable.

This wood insect home is very well made and very robust, it is easy to fix onto fence etc, there is a small hanging space on the back, could also be used free standing if wished. I am happy to recommend

A very cute little bug hotel. Fairly sturdy and so far I’ve seen a ladybird and a solitary bee using it! Every morning, the kids have been running out to see if we have new visitors.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersReally well made and very cute.

It’s quite small but it is easy to hang up and feels like it would withstand bad weather.

The Holes are different sizes and some of the smaller ones would be really hard to clean, however otherwise it’s perfect for what it’s intended for.

I got this to replace an existing one that had rotted and fell apart after a few years.
This one is well made with the advantage of a metal roof which should help it last longer and keep the rain off.
It comes complete with a “bottle brush” that you can use to clean some of the larger holes, it will not fit the small ones, The only disadvantage is that it unlike my previous one does not dismantle so you can see what is in there.
It fits on the fence etc with a hanger that swings out, I had to use a screwdriver to loosen the hanger so it could be used.

This is a beautiful addition to my garden. So not only an aesthetically pleasing ornament but entirely functional as an insect habitat. I think this will last a long time of many seasons of weathering. It has been manufactured to a high standard and the roof should keep off the rain. The main structure of it is thick and should withstand warping. It hangs up securely and neatly.
    It smells really natural.
I am glad we got this for our garden.

    Well made and looks grea

This little bug house will hopefully encourage more wildlife into my garden – living on a newbuild estate that’s still under construction comes with significantly fewer birds, bees and bugs than I’d like so I’m planting and building as much as I can to turn our garden into a haven for them all!
The construction of this bug hotel is solid. The metal roof is a great addition as I’ve had all wooden ones in the past and the roof often needs replacing due to getting wet all the time.
The installation is very easy and I think I’ll be getting a few more to try and help more little creatures out!

Well made, strong and heavy (779g). Can be hung or just stand alone. At the time of this review 14.99 which I feel is a fair price, my only niggle is mine didn’t come with a cleaning brush, its meant to so maybe this one just got missed along the production line. Not a big issue but handy to have. Overall good.

This is a fairly simple build for a bee hotel, with a chunky wooden three-sided frame that has had a selection of cylindrical wooden pieces firmly glued into it. It has a mass-manufactured feel, and while the layout we got doesn’t exactly match the product photos, it’s very close. There are quite a few gaps between some of the sticks too, offering a variety of different shapes and sizes to any insects that might be able to reach it.

Because everything is fixed rigidly in place, there’s not a lot of monitoring available, nor maintenance- and the cleaning brush feels like a somewhat brutal approach, especially if you’re not sure what’s down any one particular hole. If you’re keen to monitor what’s going on in your bug hotel, then one of the fold-up hotels which can be opened up like a vertical bug will be much more educational. But if you’re happy to just put it in your garden and leave it alone, and hope that it’s helping, then you won’t mind.

The metal roof seems like a good idea in principle, for the British weather. I’m not very keen on the look of it though. Compared to the product photo, the roof on the one we received is very shiny, almost like an aluminium sink, and if you’re unlucky with angles it will end up bouncing a lot of sunlight off the metal roof and in through your window. With the obvious rivet holes t’s rather ugly, and where the metal has been bent at the top of the roof, there’s a conspicuous gap which rain could potentially drip through, a tiny gap in what is otherwise fairly reasonable roof protection. So while I think the metal roof is a good idea, aesthetically it ends up being a down point.

A few more options at the back of the hotel for different ways to hang or mount it would have been nice. For weaker mounting points, hanging what is quite a heavy lump of wood from a single susceptible metal hook hole seems just a little optimistic- I think in a year or two it may end up needing extra support or repositioning.

It’s a reasonably good bug house, on a par with one we’ve bought before, but a bit lumpy and the metal roof is a bit ugly. It’s still a good idea to get one though.

This is a great little bug hotel. It’s got a waterproof roof and has a tag for hanging that’s easily accessible. You get a brush for cleaning at the end of the year, which fits nicely in the holes.

Suitable for a variety of bugs, I’ve had bees and ladybirds staying in a similar one I’ve had for a few years, so I’m hoping this will be just as good. They seem to prefer ones in slightly warmer locations, but not necessarily in windy areas.

Really good quality of manufacture and made from thick wood with a full metal covering to the roof. Plenty of different shaped cut-outs and nooks and crannies in this bee/insect house so should be good for many species. Comes in a box covered in bees and instructions for placement on the back of it. Cannot tell if the bees are happy with it yet but the glut of ladybugs we are having certain appreciate it. I have been fortunate enough to try two bee/insect houses from the same company and they are both the same excellent quality. I have included a picture of them both together so you can choose which you prefer as they are both the same price at 14.99 each. Each of them also includes a small cleaning brush.

    Sturdy Quality & Decent Weigh

This is a cute little insect house and it looks great from the front with it’s little hidey holes for bugs and critters. It feels sturdy and well built, with a hook on the back for easy attaching to a fence or shed. At 14.99 it seems reasonable value too. The biggest gripe is the finish – the metal roof had writing/scribbles on, as if part of the manufacturing and it hadn’t been cleaned or brushed off. It would be a shame to receive it in that condition if it was intended as a gift. Luckily it scrubbed off with a bit of elbow grease, but still looks a bit scruffy after.

Sturdy but not the best finish

This Insect Hotel from the Garden Locker Store is well-constructed and of a superior design that offers safe living accommodation to all manner of insects, bees and butterflies, and has an overhanging metal roof to keep them dry and sheltered during wet weather. There’s a metal hook at the back for attaching it to a fence post. A small brush is provided for cleaning out the 30+ bamboo tubes when summer is over and the insects have vacated their living quarters prior to the hotel being put away for protection during the winter. The hotel itself measures 16.5cm to the apex, is 13cm wide and 9.9cm deep/12cm including the overhanging roof. I really like this smashing little insect hotel with its strong metal roof and I can definitely recommend it. I can’t wait to see insects using it.

    Perfect for attracting insects!

This cute insect hotel for solitary bees/other bugs seemed like a nice addition to our garden. I like the idea that the metal roof might help to delay the wood rotting, and this is bent round rather than joined pieces.

This is designed to be attached via screw/nail to a hard feature rather than used as a hanging item and has a flip-up metal mounting plate, but doesn’t include any fixings.

This is a garden item, and the finish of the wooden sides isn’t completely smooth. The edges are all a little rough. When new the metal roof is shiny, but presumably this will age/oxidise and recolour.

I like the design of the holes for occupants. Some of these are varying widths of bamboo pole section, but there’s also a 6cm wide round cross-section piece of wood (the end of which has been painted to match the outside of the bee house) into which several smaller holes have been drilled, as well as two half-circles of the same construction.

Being a bit fussy, the bamboo strips could have been fitted better (the bee hotel I received has a lot of gaps in it), and one of the drilled holes in the wooden circle has been mis-drilled and is two holes pretty much on top of one another.

This came boxed, in a plain brown box with a lot of tape sealing it.

This little bee hotel is cute and compact and I love it. We have many many bees in our garden and they have made their home in one or the other of our bird nesting boxes over the years so this is ideal. I love the idea that they have their own little resting place. Until I actually started watching the bees in the garden I did not realise how hard they work collecting the pollen so I am happy they have a little resting place of their own.

Well made with an upgraded metal roof this little hotel is fabulous and we have put it near the flower beds where the bees frequent the most. Five stars for a beautiful little bee hotel. I love it!

This bee / big house is perfect for any compact garden area. It takes up little space on a fence or wall and only requires one screw to mount it (not included).

This looks great and also makes a nice feature for the wall, in addition to the practical side of it. I’m really looking forward to bees or other insects making their home there.

The materials used to make this are good and the metal roof is a really good choice as it should keep the bees dry and stop the wood underneath rotting over time.

This is definitely recommended. Just a case of waiting for the bees now.

This bee or other insect house is well made.

The holes are the right size. The construction of the hole compatments is nicely varied so it looks interesting.

The metal roof provides good protection and the metal hanging strip provides a secure means of attaching the house to a wall or wooden post etc.

    Good value for money.

    Ideal bee / insect house

I’ve often wondered where the bees go after eating my lavender. Now I’ll be able to find out once I put this bee house outside. I also have a wildlife camera to watch them.

It’s well made with plenty of holes for anything really. I like it a lot and it should last years if looked after.

Got to give it 5-5. It’s a quality bee house with a metal roof. Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA very sturdy standard looking bug hotel, measurements, including the overhanging roof, are 17cm high, 17cm wide and 12cm deep. The hotel has been well made, and it’s a solid construction.
Suitable for solitary bees and other bugs . I place these around my fruit trees and bushes, I get a much better crop since I’ve been doing it. Leave some wet sand near the hotel, so the bugs can seal up the holes, I use flower pot dishes around the garden.
Position your bug hotel about waist or chest height, on a fence or wall. Its important to place it facing south, in a sunny position, near your flowers and shrubs, or in my case fruit trees.
This bug hotel has the added advantage of a metal roof, which extends out to keep the bug rooms dry. I’m always having to replace the wooden roofs on my hotels every couple of years or so, as they warp in the hot summers and wet winters. Having a metal covering is a good idea, and one I might use on my others.
The holes and bamboo tubes are of various sizes, for the different size bugs that will use them.
There is a strong metal hook on the back for securing it to a fence or wall.
It also comes with a pipe brush, so you can clear out the debris, I leave mine for the bees and bugs to clean out and reuse.
I might have to drill out a couple of the bamboos, as they seem blocked already and I think there is room for another tube.
You cannot have enough bug hotels around the garden, and this one is well made and the best I have seen, so I’m happy to recommend.

A well made and solidly constructed bug hotel 🐝 🐞 🦋

I love my mead (honey wine) and without bees there would bee (pardon the pun) no honey and no pollination of flowers and new plants. So anything that helps the bees is a good thing.

These little houses make good homes for solitary bees as well as other insects. The types of bees that will nest won’t produce honey but they will produce babies that will help polinate flowers in the garden and help for next season.

We have fruit trees in our garden and one of the biggest factors for fruit yealds is pollination by bees. So we’ll be setting this up to help.

The little house is a good size, not too small or big. So it can easily be hung in the garden without being bulky or getting in the way. It’s made of pine with hollowed bamboo tubes and drilled pine sections inserted. It also has a galvanised metal roof to protect from the rain and a little bracket for attaching by a screw. The wood is not waxed or varnished (which is a good thing) because it allows the bees and insects to scrape the wood and make a home easier for their offspring.

It’s best to hang this off the ground to avoid rot and a bit sheltered from the wind. Depending when you put this up you may want to have it facing the sun to help it warm up or in the shade if its warm enough already.

This is a good product that will hopefully help the bees to help our fruit trees. Highly recommended

Help the bees and help your garde
