I use this monitor for office applications and also photograph editing. The images are bright and crystal clear. When using office apps the document/spreadsheet/presentation readability is much enhanced.
Also 4k video presents very good clarity, with or without HDR.
Setup controls are easy to use. Monitor angle and height manipulation is very easy.
Great for gaming and movies. I also use for software development. The speaker is average but that’s to be expected. Highly recommended.
You can easily adjust the height and turn it around. The look and settings are great too. The colours are also absolutely sharp with contrast. What’s important is that it’s a 4K monitor, which for this price and quality is a very good buy. The refresh rate could be a little more at say 75hz, but it’s still ok. It has a nice look. I recommend this produc
I’m running this monitor an AMD R9 Fury X using DisplayPort 1.2 as the optimum connection for the moment. This means that I do not have access to HDR, the full 144hz (I’m capped at 60), and some other features just yet. Once the AMD RX7900XTX releases, I will be upgrading to that, and will try to remember to revise this review when I can to better cover the full featureset.
With that said, moving from a 27″ 2560×1440~144hz TN monitor has been great because the colours, the viewing angles, and the pixel density (visual clarity) is incredible. Despite being 1″ bigger than my old monitor, it provides approximately 1.5x the pixel density with 2.25x the resolution, and it’s noticed immediately.
The monitor is a true joy to look at and in my personal set-up, and the PPI x distance from my screen (30 inches away) means that it achieves greater than ‘retina’ effect. (for reference, this monitor at 28″ requires 22 inches of distance to be classified as ‘retina’ by Apple trademark standards).
One issue with this monitor is getting the Display Port connection to work properly. I managed to get it working, and then it stopped, and now it works again. Can I explain why this happened and how I fixed it? No, not really. I just had to keep attempting everything I could to get it to connect. Changing the cable, unplugging and replugging, changing the monitor feed to DP1.2 instead of 1.4, rebooting my PC many, many times…
In the end, something clicked and the monitor has worked flawlessly since. Googling it didn’t provide much help other than letting me know it’s not an unheard of issue, but it works now.
Because of this, I don’t turn it off using the power button on the back of the screen, but thankfully it does have an automatic sleep timer where it will go into standby mode if no signal activity is detected (and power up when there IS signal detected) – while also not having any indicator lights.
For some people, there lack of an indicator may be offputting, but for me, I think it’s a plus because it just looks cleaner.
Overall, I’m really loving it, and definitely recommend this monitor so far.
Great value. I just wish it was a bit easier to toggle between inputs. having to reach behind the screen and use the joystick to swap input devices gets rather annoying…
If you don’t use this screen on multiple devices then the above is a moot point.
The ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM gaming monitor is a great choice for gamers who want a fast and responsive IPS display. With a refresh rate of 280Hz, this monitor provides smooth and responsive gameplay. Additionally, the G-SYNC compatibility ensures that your graphics are rendered smoothly and accurately. This monitor also supports DisplayHDR 400, providing you with great image quality. Lastly, the Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync technology reduces motion blur and makes your gaming experience more immersive. Overall, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM gaming monitor is a great choice for gamers who want a fast and responsive IPS display
Crispy clean premium amazing color balanced display for QHD 1440p 170hz 300fps beast monito
Awesome screen well worth the mo ey graphocs are good
Bought this monitor but it came broken, bought the VG27AQZ which is the EXACT same with same specs just is the newer model, also costs 100+ less.
Good crisp clean image the works well for both work, video and gaming applications.
solid monitor for a good price. i bought it when it went on offer and it definitely is a good monitor.
I got this for use on my Xbox Series X, it works great! Such a high quality, sheek design, easily wall mountable.
My only niggle is that when im using Netflix (via Xbox) it seems darker than usual. Picture is still visible but you can see the difference.
I like the range of different angles and heights you can adjust your screen for with the base it has. Good build quality and the blue light filter is excellent to keep your eyes healthy. I think for this range of price this product has no competition in 1080p at the current market.
A great monitor overall but there was a dead pixel on it literally not even a month after I have bought it. I’m not sure when it appeared but it’s been a while
I like this monitor and have three of them to use Nvidia Surround. Overall they are great, the do have some backlight bleed in certain scenes but for gaming they are absolutely fine.
I purchased this monitor for the purpose of being a main gameplay screen and it is absolutely worth it. Works with my switch and Xbox one smoothly and handles my graphically intensive pc games like they’re butter smooth
Xmas present for my oldest boy. Now he can immerse himself in gaming even more 🙂 Well packaged and quickly delivered.
Upgraded from a 1080p Asus VG872H (same size) and the difference is staggering. 1440p at 27″ really is the sweet spot, trust me.
Impressed by G-Sync technology, drops in FPS now are far less distracting.
Colours are bright but I leave HDR off because in my opinion it makes things worse.
You’ll need a good card to run it. Im on a 2080Ti, 1080p cards wont cut the mustard.
Bought this monitor for use with PS5 unfortunately due to the PS5 not supporting 1440p and the monitor not supporting 1080p @120Hz I was stuck with 1080p @ 60Hz. If I wanted that kind of performance I could pay a lot less hence I returned the item. That said if you were to use it for a PC setup I’m sure it would be a great monitor.
All round excellent (probably best) hdmi 2.0 monitor for next gen consoles (currently using for PS5). Best selling feature is theh downscale capability from 4k to 2k for the PS5 despite the console not having the capability to play at 1440p (video output displays 2160p).
Would be 10/10 without one issue, very rarely – but frustrating when it occurs – the screen will go black for 2/3 seconds mid game as if resetting and then the picture will return. It ruins the experience especially when you don’t know when it will occur as how rare it happens. The hdmi is tested and works fine along with the PS5. Can not find a solution to this problem.
To note I’ve tried this running from a 1050ti and also a 3080ti and it’s great on both at 280hz
concerned I’d miss the extra screen size. Needn’t have worried though – hardly noticeable if I’m honest and more than made up for by the increase in resolution. Bright and vibrant with hugely improved colours on my last screen, no hints of ghosting or blur, and fine on angles. Rich, deep blacks and darks particularly obvious. GPU (2070 super) runs new games on this at 4K on mainly ultra settings (game issues aside CP 2077 at least look stunning). Set up simple enough, and construction has a solid enough feel though betraying its (relatively) low price a little (to be expected). TUF cosmetics give it a cool vibe visually. Highly recommended overall at the price.
First monitor I’ve owned but going from a 42″ 4K tv this is quite a step up in refresh rate was also lucky to get it on sale, I don’t have a desk but it sits perfect on top of pc and adjustability is grea
There is a fault, when playing xbox series s at 1440p with 120hz and FPS boost, my screen on occasions will go blank for a second or 2, only occasionally. But it is a bit concerning. I’m worried it will start happening more often.
Can anyone tell me why this would be happening and is there a solution.
I’ve tried turning off HDR and FPS boost but the picture quality goes down.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
The panel size is slightly smaller than the area covered by the bezel. This makes the gap when using dual or triple monitor setups annoying large.
That’s the only negative. I love the screen. The colours and refresh rate are superb. I cannot comment on the mount since I wall mounted them with ease.
(Sorry about the camera, couldn’t upload via gmail, messenger only) Was doing a lot of research about these best budget 144hz monitors, I had g24c1 aoc in my list, but I saw this one and it had IPS panel which is great (way better colors, viewing angles and stuff) it is not curved, but let me tell you guys, you don’t need a curved monitor for 24 inches, especially for FPS games. This ASUS has great speakers as well, very good to watch YouTube, listen to music. In overall – 144hz, IPS panel, speakers, great quality and 220-230 that’s gotta be your choice if you are looking for a 144hz budget monitor!
The response times of the XB271HU are noticeably better than the VG27AQ. I reckon the panel is if not identical, very similar. The difference is that the XB271HU has had a lot more effort put into the pixel transition voltage curve tuning, whereas the VG27AQ is a bit slap and dash. You can clearly see this by looking at the pixel transition response curves on various review sites. And it is noticeable in day to day use if they are side by side. If they aren’t side by side, then anybody other than very technical people like myself would be able to tell a difference. Thus, this monitor is great value. Also, the ULMB strobe backlight on the VG27AQ is crap at 165Hz. Very poorly tuned and actually increases motion blur in my opinion. Thus, I would just use it on normal.
Top quality monitor spoiled by quirky interaction with nVidia G-Sync. After a few minutes of seamless operation, the monitor would go into irretrievable standby mode, & could only be re-awakened by rebooting. Quick internet search showed this was not an uncommon occurrence, & there didn’t appear to be a “quick fix” posted online. So, sadly had to return the VG27AQ in favour of an MSI Optix G273QF.
It works fine but it was a pain to get gsync working, they provide you with a standard hdmi cable that doesnt support it. I ended up buying a separate display port cable but it wouldn’t let me use 144hz and i had to mess about to get it to work.
The monitor has some pretty bad backlight bleed on the corners of the display as well, its noticeable in dark scenes. The colors are pretty crips though and the monitor has a lot of options.
Really good monitor however the speakers are AWFUL. I thought “hey maybe they’ll be okay” and I was wrong. The sound out of them is almost unusable so I’d honestly recommend going and getting yourself and equally good monitor without speakers if that’s what you’re looking for. Also to change the volume takes half the day because it’s hidden in the settings which can only be navigated to with 2 buttons on the underside of the screen which is incredibly frustrating.
Picture quality is good though and nice for watching movies or gaming.
Don’t get me wrong it is a GOOD MONITOR just don’t expect the speakers to have any kind of decent sound quality or the settings be easy to navigate.
I upgraded from a 1080p 60fps IPS panel and the difference is substantial. The image itself is a little nicer, a little clearer, but the increased frame rate make a huge difference to my gaming performance.
Like all IPS panels, the display is bright and there is a little light bleed from the corners, especially the bottom right but this is never a problem while actually playing games. If you’re going to be doing work or watching movies, you may be better with a VA panel but for a sharp, clear, blur-free gaming session, this screen is the business.
The hardware sight is a good touch too.
Even if you don’t decide to buy this monitor, I urge you to get a gaming display with high refresh rate, you won’t regret it.
Unfortunately the first unit they sent damage and showed signs of previous use but they replaced it in 2 days.
Great monitor, however it does not raise on it’s own stand as high as the ROG Strix 27 inch equivalent, it stops about 4cm lower. So if like me you wanted to use it as a second monitor to match the ROG, which I use as my main monitor and have it raised, this model might not reach the hight you expect. It also takes some fiddling to match the screens colours as selecting the same setting in the menu does not match the colours, so must be done manually.
Now the bind. I had read about build quality. More exactly the very poor control of items leaving the factory. Dead pixels being the most common. Mine did not have that and it was several hours of use and testing that I noticed the fault. Once noticed it’s too bad to ignore so it’s been returned and replaced. More on the second later….
In the picture above you will hopefully see the fault, it was very tricky to take an accurate picture of it.
The frame around the screen which sits inside the case is warped, BADLY. Down the left hand side you will notice the strip bordering the screen is mostly silver sheen, except for the very middle, it’s darker, near black. This is the bulge, about 3mm+ outwards. This in turn you will see makes a lighter screen distortion reaching towards the middle of the screen. On dark or black frames it’s terrible and there is no way this should have left the factory in this condition. This must have been production damage as the packaging is, was, 100% unmarked even after delivery.
The right hand side bulges out in the exact same way by about 1mm but does not cause screen distortion.
I’ve always rated Asus products and have a still working 12 year old motherboard / GPU setup I loved so much it’s now a home hub. This has not dented my trust in Asus as I think they’re allowed one faulty product in what is now thirty plus buys.
But again, this should never have left the factory in this state so be aware. Worth buying every time but might be faulty.
EDIT : Second one arrived perfect. Amazon would not return and replace so I returned then rebought. All handled very quickly. Delivered on a Sunday.
Bumping this from 2 stars to 5 based on the performance of the second monitor.
Pros:
* This monitor is ideal if you know you’re going to be moving around a lot, it’s box and packaging make it super easy to disassemble and move transport. I have been carrying around for the past 3-4 years and it still is one of my favourite screens I’ve ever had.
* The speakers for monitor speakers are just amazing, you can tell they have not just been slapped on. There was thought that went into making them sound good and create a good soundscape
* Lasts a long time (still in use as the secondary monitor)
Cons:
* Controls aren’t amazing – not labelled and slightly unintuitive (took me two years to work out there’s a volume control)
* Not adjustable except for screen tilt up and down.
* Side viewing means that the colours disappear so is only really meant for one person to look at.
* Not 144Hz (although I have a 144Hz monitor and don’t see what all the fuss is about)
Altogether great monitor!
straight out of the box the presets or profiles are not the most colour accurate, a slight green or cyan cast was noticeable. Luckily I have a colour calibrator (i1 pro) and now its looking great. it looks almost identical to how my Asus Pro Art series monitor did but with super quick response time. very happy with it for 450
there is noticeable backlight bleed in the bottom corners but I have kinda got used to it. just dont edit your photos in full screen, use the cleanest part of the panel (the center) and you’ll be fine. its also wider than i thought for some reason, im fairly certain my old monitor was 27″ but this feels wider which is nice. thin bezels. doesnt use one of those big power-supplies and doesnt have VGA input so you need to have a MOBO or GPU with hdmi or displayport. also the hdmi wont run past 60hz so use the displayport cable.
I bought this monitor to use with PC / Consoles. It arrived in just under a day after order, which is pretty impressive in the middle of a pandemic and near christmas. it unfortunately doesnt have great colour definition, so the picture looks washed out, but im sure that can be fixed by fiddling with the settings. It also came with a single dead pixel, but that personally doesnt bother me for the price and speed i got it at.
It is my first ever good monitor, and gamining monitor. The 144hz is absolutely mesmerising. Do your self a favour if you are a gamer, and get a 144hz. Game changer. You can never look back to 60 or 75 after this!
Looks are great, with thin bezels that are not too noticeable. Viewing angles are great, colours are great, resolution is great! Everything is great! It has a small joystic to navigate the menus making a lot easier to work with, and some decent quality speakers for basic functions if you don’t have any other means (manage expectations: significantly worse than a laptop/smartphone/tablet).
It is very light to be mounted on a monitor arm with ease and no troubles at all.
My only issue with the monitor is that it does take a few seconds to boot up and detect my pc (my pc often turns on quicker than the monitor) and there is nothing for cable management at the back.
Even with these issues I would recommend the monitor.
I got the VG27AQ. The difference between a 60hz monitor and this 165hz monitor is night and day.
Pros
Great colours
Sharp images
Fast frames for gaming
Good build quality
Small stand (fit on most desks)
Cons
You will have to enable overclock mode on monitor to get full 165hz and if you don’t have gsycn turn on can cause instability. (For 165hz i recommend having a nvidia gpu)
All in all I cant say much bad about it. Great buy and not badly priced.
This is really good for the price. I bought for use in my home office but with a secondary function of gaming. Specifically, playing SNES mini, Neo Geo Arcade stick pro etc as they all output HDMI.
The picture is really good out of the box and even better with a few small changes.
Also, not sure what other reviewers are talking about but this DOES have speakers. They aren’t fantastic but for gaming they’re fine.
The menu is also not difficult to navigate; you just need to spend a few moments cycling through.
It comes (in the UK) with both a three pin UK plug, a two pin EU plug, speaker cable and a VGA cable. If you want to plug into something that inputs a picture and sound you will need an HDMI cable!
After sending back the VA curved panel of this screen the ips is outstanding the colours pop the refresh rate amazing, there is some ghosting in certian games but only badly optomised ones like 7 days to die, but in doom eternal at 165fps the game looks outstanding,
The speakers arnt great but not terrible either ok for light use like watching the news or cartoons, its not very loud,
The hdr just seems to brightern the screen up and over saturates certian colours due to no dimming zones, but it dose look good in games just dont turn it on in desktop, most games still see it as hdr acreen and turns it on,
For the best picture quality i suggests you calibrate the screen colours or just google a screen profile which i did and wow,
My only nag is the ips glow its not bad by any means and can only see it when its dark and watching say netflix but in a full screen game i couldnt even see it,
Great flexibility in the stand bearly any stand wobble,
All round this is a daily driver screen great for gaming, browsing the Internet and media consumption, and id also say light media creatio
Decent monitor but I didn’t notice 280hz as much as I thought I would. Not like there’s many games that run that on an RTX 2070s as older games that could, tend to be limited to 60fps and games that aren’t limited, I can’t reach 280 on my gpu.
The above is my personal experience so far, but the monitor itself is great and so are the features, it does what it says and looks good doing in.
Personally I probably should have gone for lower FPS (144+) and 2k resolution.
Thought 1080p 280hz would be good for competitive gaming like cod, but I’d have been better off with higher resolution with the gpu I have.
Genuinely decent monitor though and one day I’ll see them 280 FPS…
The peak brightness is fine… 350 nits compared to 400 nits is no difference at all. Don’t let the fact that it’s not quite HDR400 bother you, you aren’t missing anything. The HDR quality is quite a cinematic upgrade from SDR video.
The speakers are awful… but nobody uses monitor speakers in 2020. There’s no such thing as good monitor speakers. A monitor with good speakers is called a TV set by my account.
It can display the gaming crosshairs and all that gamer’s mumbo jumbo, but more importantly it has more comfortable menu overlay. And the joystick makes it easy to navigate.
You can adjust brightness and blue light modes and change HDR mode. You can even choose to confine the colour gamut to range of sRGB, where it would approximate the colour space of 100% sRGB (but I don’t know why you would choose to see less colour).
For the price of 350 (which is what I paid), you really can’t beat this monitor as of March 2020. It rotates so you can have the screen vertically aligned. By swivelling it vertically, you can have a phone-like orientation so you can view lists and the length of a word document in 4K. If you have a better monitor than this, then this feature would be good for you. The monitor stand also lets you adjust the height… and I can tell you that the screen moves up pretty high and down pretty low. And you can adjust the angle so that you don’t have to crane your neck or turn your head. The monitor can face you without having to move the stand.
In order to make the most of this monitor, you will need to have an iGPU equalling or bettering the Intel HD 620 series. In terms of dedicated GPUs, I’d recommend the Nvidia GT 1030. For 4K movies running on Windows, an iGPU may struggle with codec and take a massive toll on system performance. A dedicated GPU (recommending the GT 1030) capable of displaying 4K at 60Hz over DisplayPort will be able to run high resolution and frame rate videos without stuttering or lack of responsiveness.
For consoles, I would also say that a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X will make the more of this monitor in YouTube, Netflix and Blu-Ray (provided your internet connection speed is about 3MB/s or faster, and that you actually put a 4K Blu-Ray disc into the Blu-Ray drive).
Other than that… gud monitor, little $.
I bought this monitor for my new obsession with FPS – namely Call of Duty Modern Warfare.
Just to get things out of the way – if you haven’t gamed with >60 Hz monitor (like I did before this buy) you will be flabbergasted as soon as you plug this thing on.. and yes you cannot go back to 60 Hz. I have a 32″ 4K 60hz monitor and while it looks really nice, gaming at 60Hz is now unbearable on it..
The screen looks amazing and inline with the TUF series.
The onscreen display is easy to navigate and has many option to customize. The only thing missing is the gamma correction function which is not there.
The monitor needs 100% calibrating and you can do that through googling or going to display ninja / rtings/ other website you prefer.
Overall the functions of: overdrive to 165 Hz / Elmb/ ASCR are nice.
It has HDR function but in all honesty it’s non existent. I would describe this as HDR ready rather than true HDR monitor since there is no local dimming function.
I am pleased with the monitor – there are other monitors from Asus some that are better and some that are worse – choose your budget and go for what you can. My opinion is that you need to do your research before you buy one and always keep in mind one question and one question only. What are you going to be using this monitor for?
As a monitor for everyday use I d say that it’s too bright and maybe tiring for your eyes. As a gaming monitor is very good.
Remember to set it up through its OSD and then at Windows / graphics adapter. Also get the color calibration icc profile from Asus and use it with windows.
Happy gaming !
This is a very very good monitor.
It has an outstanding IPS panel with very good factory calibration!
The 144hz refreshh rate is a treat and the overdrive modes are nice withh no overshoot too!
The monitor has freesync which can also be used withh ELMB.
Sadly overdrive cannot be usedd or tweaked while ELMB is on.
This monitor has nice touches like the cheat crosshairs, FPS counters, Timers and more!
Thhe monitors stand may be plastic be it does off height adjust, tilt, pivot and can be turned portrait if needed.
If this monitor is out of your price range i casn highly recommend thhe AOC 24G2U or 27G2U.
The monitor came with two power cables, one for the UK and one for here in ireland which was fine, however the cable for here in ireland isn’t the right cable and it doesn’t fit into the monitor itself. Having to use a cable which came with the second monitor I got so only 1 usuable for the time being.
Lovely monitor but had to return two of them due to bad backlight bleed. The first had terrible bleed especially in the lower left corner that showed even on bright scenes. The 2nd I’m having to return as it has terrible bleed but in 3 corners which is so off putting. Such a shame as it’s a lovely looking monitor and has beautiful colours but the backlight bleed lets it down.
Edit: Decided to keep the second Monitor as overnight the backlight bleed got a lot better, most of it went which was surprising. So will up my star rating as like i said it’s a lovely looking monitor with great picture quality.
One issue i did not like. It has DP1.2 version port (it does not support HDR)
HDMI port does not support GSync, but support HDR.
So you cant use GSync and HDR at same time.
Had to return monitor. Looking towards 27GL850 or 27GL83A now.
So I bought this monitor for my gaming setup and I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I’ve had some bad experiences in the past so I was hoping that I hadn’t wasted my money. So a few days later the monitor arrived, earlier then what I expected the box that the monitor came in was very well wrapped and well protected it took me about 5 minutes if that to set it up and I was very pleased the picture was very clear the speaker was louder then what I expected as I read some reviews some comments said that it wasn’t that loud but that wasn’t the case, All in all, I gave this product a 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend to anyone wanting a budget monitor
Pros
Clear picture
Decent speakers
very good for consoles and computers
Price compared to some monitors
Cons
Non!
This is a high-resolution display that has zero dead pixels (I was worried about this) it is sharp and crisp and happily runs at 2560 x 1440 @ 165Hz, this is higher than advertised and it is flicker-free.
I found a company on the internet that had carried out an in-depth and very extensive review and calibration using “Blur Busters TestUFO Motion Tests and the Data Color Spyder5ELITE Display Calibration System”.
I contacted them via email prior to purchasing this monitor and they were happy to send me the ICC Profile that they had created, this was set as the default within Windows 10 Pro and the result is superb.
I am highly delighted with this monitor as the build quality is far superior to what I was expecting and the ease of setting up and operation makes this an absolute bargain in my opinion.
