Honestly, did a lot of homework before buying these, so somewhat knew what we were getting in to.
I was a little reluctant to purchase over the LED strip light system Govee has, which are only a little more expensive, but use an HDMI control box to sync, which I believed would be more responsive than the camera on these lights.
I read some reviews and would like to settle a few things:
– The device works only with 2.4ghz internet. This is not a problem. Devices such as Ring only recently started working with 5ghz internet, so this isn’t unusual and pretty much any router would support both bands currently. However, take note of this, as it is vital to getting the device working. Looking at some pages and reviews on the web, they advise they couldn’t even get the app to talk to the device, but I’m guessing they didn’t read the instructions clearly and connected the app to their 5ghz connection. You also must have Bluetooth switched on, on your phone to connect to these.
– The lights, camera and control box all come with pre-fitted 3M stickers. Again, these are used by other products such as Ring and are one of the strongest and most permeable stickers on the market, being able to stick to many surfaces for a LONG period of time. However, there are some caveats to this. You obviously can’t stick this to any rounded surface, as only a small portion of the tape would be stuck, allowing the other part to collect dust, which will weaken the bond over a short time. You MUST ensure the surface it is being stuck to is clean. If there are dust particles, don’t expect this to stick for long. Plan ahead. Ensure you know exactly where you are sticking the lights and place them firmly in place as soon as the back is off the sticker. They should easily last a year or more in place with these stickers, after which replacement 3M stickers cost a few pounds.
– You have a camera and there are security concerns… This one I don’t understand. The camera is pointing at your screen. When you look in the app, you can only see the TV. Unless you plan on standing directly face to screen with your TV, the camera isn’t going to see much of you!
Now, my review is this:
The device took about an hour to install. This was because i measured everything out and took my time to ensure I fully understood the instructions and what went where. Once everything was in place it took literally 10 minutes to configure. After that, it was just a case of playing with the settings to get the saturation levels perfect.
The device is REALLY responsive. I honestly cannot stress this enough. I had good expectations on the device, but it has far exceeded them to the point I question if I would get much better performance from the HDMI connected solution. To test I watched a scene from the Madagascar firework song, which is fast paced, has a lot of colours and changes the colours frequently. This thing was almost flawless. I may be getting old, but I really couldn’t see any delay with the screen and the colours projected by the LEDs. If I didn’t know any better, I would say the device could foresee the next colour before it arrived! 🙂
This is my first “back light” solution, so I can’t compare with others, so the more expensive solutions may outdo these. However, if you are looking for a fantastic experience on a budget, then I highly recommend this solution. If installed right, taking your time, and prepping the areas right, you will be rewarded with vibrant colours and an enhanced TV viewing experience.
I’m a big fan of mood lighting, led strip etc. They create a cosy atmosphere and look great in rooms. I have a Philips ambilight TV in living room and this does the same job on my bedroom TV. I used to buy the cheaper makes but they fail quickly. I’ll only buy Govee now as its good quality and will get replaced with no issues. I have a Govee led strip on my TV as well so combine the 2 for more colour and affect.
For the money I was somewhat sceptical. However, what a fantastic product. Easy installation and set up. I have a 55″ TV and have mounted on the back, works perfectly.
Integration with Alexa is seamless and the Grovee app is easy enough to use and calibrate the camera. I have also chose to mount the camera on the bottom of the tv and just slightly off centre due to the remote control receiver on the tv, works fine!
This certainly rivals the Phillips Hue bar and at a fraction of the cost I can’t imagine I’d be much more impressed than this product!
Highly recommend!
The lights arrived quickly well packaged.
They are advertised as suitable for 27-45″ monitors or TVs but mine works with a 65″ TV .
The lights kind of work , I have the camera mounted underneath my 65″ TV and it’s displaying the colours correctly when watching TV or playing consoles.
My only issue is that it’s just impossible to calibrate the camera throught the app.
I have connected the light to Bluetooth and my WiFi ( hast to be 2.4Ghz) when I try to calibrate the camera it’s not being detected .
I have tried everything, I watched YouTube reviews and tutorials went through Reddit I have tried for many hours with no luck.
Maybe it’s just my unit that’s kind of defective but at the end of the day its working and still picking up the right colours.
