Purchased for a relative as I already own a similar model and have had brilliant results
I asked her about the frequency of use and she tells me that it’s a weekly thing initially but that tails off over time. She’s using it every 2-3wks now, but she still has hobbit feet so there’s clearly work to do.
I’m not sure how long it takes to de-fuzz because it’s usually done along with a shower and whatever else you female types do when you’re making yourselves look purdy, but I can watch a whole rugby match before she reappears, which is nice.
Be sure to get it on sale, the price fluctuates down to 250
3 attachments and razor which is good for eye brows.
Some points to note:
It says use every two weeks. I used it twice/three times per week initially and didn’t have any problems. I have normal skin tone and used it on the highest setting without any issues.
I don’t find it painful at all, it can feel like a pinch as it heats up. But I just leave it let it cool down and go back to it.
The only downside is it does heat up quite a lot when you’ve been using it for while so I would let it cool down between areas. It says not to pluck in between but I could not leave mine so I plucked the stubborn hairs and kept using it and it really has made a huge difference.
For women out there with hormonal issues, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) buy this, you won’t regret it. It seems like a lot of money but it is worth it. This is an honest review, I am not working for them, being paid etc 😀 I just hope this will help fellow sufferers like it did me.
I usually have VERY hairy legs. The hairs were thick and dark. As soon as I shaved, you could see the dark specs where the top of the hair had been shaved off. The next day, I would be prickly. After 7 days, my legs would be fully hairy! And i mean gorilla hairy! I really wish I’d taken a before pic to show the diffence.
These images are 2 weeks after last shaving! I am just about to do my 4th treatment. I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am with the results. There’s a few darker hairs growing in some very small areas, some areas where the hairs are super fine and you can barely see them, and some areas where no hair has grown back at all.
Safe to say I am over the moon with the results. It’s so easy to use and track with the app. Best decision i have ever made!
I’ll be updating this review periodically. Theoretically, I am the perfect user since I have very pale skin and dark hair.
At first glance this device is well-built, is simple to use, and comes with clear instructions. However, if you intend to follow the safety advice on when never to use this item… you’ll possibly never use it.
To list a few of the never use: dark skin, pregnancy, certain medications, AHAs/BHAs within the last week, poor wound healing history, skin sensitivity to light, a history of skin cancer, diabetes, exzema, wounds or bruises in the ares to be treated, moles, freckles, tattoos, scars, on areas where you use long-lasting deodorants, etc. Personally, my legs are covered in scratches of various ages from my cat and bruises, and I’m slow to heal.
So far I’ve used the device on test areas, and have used it once on my underarms, and have sometimes found it tricky to get the device to be ready to use. As it requires full contact or it will not work it can take a bit of wrangling to get a good angle. It is well worth doing the test patches before you use it as the setting that is comfortable is liable to signficantly vary depending on the body part.
Update #1: I’m using level 4 on my legs (lower elsewhere) and so far this is the only place I’m seeing a difference. The results there are patchy, no doubt in part because there is no way I’m covering the entire leg everytime I use this – it is easy to miss parts, and sometimes I’ve missed parts on purpose due to open wounds or irritated hair folicles – but there is definitely less hair. Elsewhere is not showing anywhere near as good a result, but this is to be expected.
I do not recommend using the device for more than a few minutes at a time. From experience the device gets extremely hot after it has been running long enough to do underarms, stomach, and a leg, and when it gets too hot the zaps start to hurt. Additionally, despite following instructions to clean the device after use, spots have begun to appear on it. Most of these are white, but there are a fleck or two that a black too.
I got this device after having professional lazer shair removal sessions that worked amazingly. But then the hair started to grow back after a time and I didn’t want to spend that kind of money again.
I was skeptical as I have light tan skin that has tanned quite dark this year and its not the same as lazer treatment but it works great. I’ve done two sessions so far and the hair is growing back obviously patchy (my poor technique when using) but it’s very clear where the hair has been treated and isn’t regrowing.
It does work, you can see the improvement, but you have to keep doing it. It hurts as expected, and after using it for a while, around 15 min for the legs, you have to stop because it is too hot but it does work
I didn’t want to spend thousands again for another laser top-up (nor go during a pandemic). And I already had an older incarnation of this Phillips LHR so I was sceptical because it wasn’t effective for me last time.
Well, it is now! I’m really please I purchased this! it’s been two months and this time, I followed the instructions ( wait two weeks after 1st go around) and it really seems to have hindered and slowed the pesky re-growth I’ve been experiencing. I have used it on the highest setting (even on my face) and it is definitely working.
I have pale skin and dark brown hair, so probably the optimum combination for using it. Had previously had salon IPL which had worked very well in just a couple of sessions, but the hairs on my legs had grown back quite a lot and I wanted a higher bikini line than I could afford at the salon!
Did my legs every two weeks for four sessions then again after a month. Now I’m just doing spot zaps when the odd hair pops up, every 2-4 weeks. I no longer need to shave armpits or legs at all, which is pretty good. I just use the little trimmer and then zap, but I’d say there were 10 single hairs total on my legs this week, after 3-4 weeks regrowth.
It has also worked really well on bikini line and above lip. I’ve done my bikini every week, which is not strictly in line with instructions, but has been effective. It works on whole area, even darker skin, although the hairs are a little more stubborn so it’s taken quite a few sessions.
You have to be prepared to spend about an hour a week on this. I did lower legs, armpits and bikini one week, then upper legs, lip and bikini the next. It keeps the sessions shorter. But I’d say I’ve done 8 sessions max and now I’m pretty much just doing upkeep.
My legs feel smooth and lovely and I’ll never have to be worried about impromptu swimming again
I only find it a little painful and warm in intimate bikini area and armpits, where I turn it down to 3 and 4 respectively. otherwise I’d genuinely say it’s painless, even on highest setting 5.
I’m so pleased with this. I hate shaving and waxing and this is a piece of cake compared with those and considerably longer lasting.
I wish I’d bought one years ago.
I was tempted to go over the area again at first, as it seemed to be less intense a feeling than the clinic treatments I’d had in the past (I’m using the second highest-highest setting as suggested by the skin tone test). But having waited a week I’m glad I’ve stuck to the instructions, I did cause myself some pigment discolouration with the laser kit years ago by doing this so I would suggest following the instructions fully with this.
My hair is quite thick and I honestly wasn’t expecting to see results like that straight away, and of course it’s early days and I’ll have to see how the regrow things is affected, but I think the result so far is a promising sign that the device is doing what it’s meant to. I’m only one week after my first treatment so I’ll come back and update this review in a few weeks once more results are clear, but if you’re like me and wanting to get rid of or at least find a better way to manage unwanted facial hair, this could be a great option… as long as you have the right skin tone and hair colour etc.
So far I would recommend this as a good option for people looking to reduce hair growth. I don’t expect to completely get rid of it for good, but even professional treatment won’t do that. And at the half the price of 1 course of treatment this looks like it could be a much more cost effective option too!
UPDATE:
2 weeks after my second treatment, most of the hair on my chin area has gone completely! I’m really quite surprised and impressed by the effectiveness of this device, I was expecting to have to wait longer for these kind of results. So far I’m very happy with it and would recommend it for those with similar problem facial hair, with the right colour and skin tone of course.
I have dark hair and pale skin which is ideal and I think I’m 4 treatments in now, and about 90% of hair is gone on my legs. I’ve also tried underarms but with low success.
I use setting 5 which doesn’t hurt me at all or leave any burns.
The process is easy, but I find it incredibly boring. It takes quite a long time to do both legs thoroughly.
Would recommend – expensive but worth it.
However, I am so pleased I decided to treat myself!!!
I’m on my 5th treatment now, and my hair has been reduced hugely!
It’s so easy to use, painless and super quick and convenient.
Hair doesn’t really grow much at all between treatments.
Not quite a five, because armpits aren’t as good, and still having to shave one a week or so – but saying that, that is still a huge improvement!
(For reference I have black hair and very pale skin)

Before you start, read the user manual and do a skin test.
The manual is a comprehensive, rather dry but easy read. You’ll find helpful diagrams, skin tone and hair colour charts, information on how IPL works, what to expect from your Lumea, instruction for your skin test, how to use it and aftercare guidance.
What does it feel like?
You’ll hear the whirring of the fan and a soft popping sound with each flash.
I found it pain-free with just a slight, occasional sting. But it’s no way as painful as waxing, epilating or threading!
The flashes mostly feel warm against your skin. But some areas, like thighs, bikini line and underarms can smart more because they’re more sensitive. And you may feel increased heat on your bikini line and underarms where your hair is thicker and denser.
After the patch test the recommended treatment schedule is that the first 4 to 5 times you uses Lumea have to be done bi-weekly. I started seeing some results after the 2nd use, after the 4th, there was very little to no hair regrowth. After the initial phase there should be a touch-up every 4 to 8 weeks. As I have light skin but dark hair for me the touch-ups easily last 8 weeks, 8 weeks of absolutely no hair.
I find it very easy to use the Philips Lumea, it is quick and painless (if it hurts you are doing something wrong), there is no mess and nothing sticky to clean afterwards.
I’ve used this for about 12 weeks now and definitely see a reduction in hair on areas I’ve used it. The hair grows back very slowly now and comes through in patches, with some areas being apparently completely bald.
Some cons:
The device overheats and will stop working after extended use. If I try to do my legs all in one go after completing one leg the device will need to be switched off for several minutes until it has cooled down and can be used for my other leg. Not the biggest issue but a minor annoyance.
Secondly it would be nice if it had an additional smaller lens as I have some troublesome hairs on my fingers which are basically impossible to zap with this as you need complete coverage of the lens before it lets you do the zappy.
3 sessions (about to do my fourth) I’m really seeing the impact it is making. My hair growth is starting to get really patchy, with areas that have already stopped growing anything! I’m using it on leg, stomach, bum, face, chest, underarm and arms and so far I’m super impressed and I’m so hopeful I might finally be getting on top of this growth. Next step with be to get the precision bikini head so I can do that! Fingers crossed it keeps going well, but I genuinely couldn’t recommend this product enough.
🙂
My hair is very dark and very thick, I have always dreamed of being completely hair free and thanks to Philips Lumea I am now achieving this goal!
Would definitely recommend, the app is also incredibly handy & helpful.
