About Us
Philips was founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, by Frederik Philips and his son, Gerard. Recognizing the opportunity presented by the mass-market introduction of electricity, and inspired by Gerard’s keen interest in scıence and engineering, the pair soon conceived a bold but timely plan: cost-effective, reliable electric incandescent light bulbs. The 1900s were a time of dramatic social and economic change. During this time, Philips became the largest private employer in the Netherlands.
Recognizing the value of scientific research to product innovation, the Philips research laboratory – known as ‘Philips Nat Lab’ – opened in 1914. Led by Dr Gilles Holst, it aspired to the highest standards of research, embarking on visionary projects, such as investigating emerging lighting technologies to discover new sources of light, while its breakthroughs in X-ray tubes ultimately marked the origin of Philips’ involvement in health technology.

I’ve had a few Philips shavers over the years and they all worked well enough.
This model is definitely the worst in terms of design. The power button is placed badly or of the wrong type, so that in use, you find you’re constantly turning it off!
Also the fact that the beard trimmer is not of the ‘pop out’ type means having to keep pulling off one head to use the other, that of course means it’ll wear out and the heads will become loose.
I shave with it when I don’t have time to use a wet razor. It is not as close a shave but it’s pretty good and does not leave your face sore.
As a life time user of Philips razors this is a excellent upgrade on my favourite shaver. Clean, close, cut, easy use and clean. Quick charge. Shame no compulsive cover for blade end when in travel mode include in the box, along with the cloth bag. My only criticism is the on off button is in a bad position, as during my shave I keep turning it off and have to reposition my grip, but I will get use to it. Overall a very good shaver for beginners and us old boys .
Having been a ‘wet’ shaver for years I was pleasantly surprised at how good a shave this does ! A little weighty but quite wieldy and essy to live with. Simple to clean and charges swiftly and lasts for a few shaves. No complaints.
Great overall quality shaver. Bought this as a replacement for a shaver that was of a similar design, but broke. I gotta say this is the best overall shaver I’ve had in eons. Great 50/50 combination of wet and dry shaving. Feels smooth when shaving and is great value for money. Battery life seems good too. Only downside is that it feels a tad fragile, hence the four out of five stars. That aside, however, the shaver does its job and for that alone, I can’t fault it really. Great value for money shaver and worth the investment.
I always bye Phillps shavers they seam to larst for ever this one is only 1 hour charge not like my old shaver witch was 7 hours to charge very pleased with this one
Bought this to replace my previous Phillips shaver. A more expensive model it gives an improved shave and is easier to clean. Only slight downside is battery life is not a good as my other shaver as it needs charging more often.
This is definitely the best shave I’ve ever had from an electric razor – would recommend- only downside is the charging power cord which terminates in ac13ampPlug and not a shaver plug- if I had known that before I purchased it would have made me look further afield
This is a good shaver for the price. However, the location of the on/off button is right where my thumb would ideally be when holding the shaver so it is easy to inadvertently knock the power off. Bad design.
I tried the 7000 new head model it kept digging in , so bought an up to date version of my old 5000
and problem solved . I’m not sure why Philips changed to the new head but its not as flexible as the 5000
which still had the rounded head . Battery life my old one has lasted 18 years . This one only has a red led when it needs charging and constant white when fully charged which is enough my old one flashed a three led display after every use .
Fast delivery, good price. Gives a very comfortable shave, MUCH better than the Braun I bought just a few months ago. I don’t know if it’s just the newer Braun shavers but those are not as good as they used to be (not a good shave even after several passes and not comfortable) hence a quick purchase of the Philips. This Philips is highly recommended and significantly better than the Braun.
I’m a phillips shaver user for years, but never bought this kind of shaver before.
I tried one with a rotary head from a generic brand and found it horrible, almost have up on them. But then I decided to give a try on a brand that I already know and guess what. Best decision ever!!!! I also bought a good shaving foam and together I have a nice smooth clean quick short shave almost every day and I’m loving it every time!
It is easy to clean, smooth on the skin, shaves really well and comfortably. Very nice value for money
Bought this for my husband. On the box picture you can see various lights lit up. When he switches shaver on it just shows a picture of a tap nothing else. He cannot see how much charge he has left so stopped half way through a shave. Instructions impossible to make out. Can anyone please explain to me how to get the other things lit up on the shaver so that you can see how much charge you have left etc. is there a magic way that we are missing. Aside from that gives a good shave but cleaning the heads very very fiddly with the flimsy plastic things you have to put in place. This is not a complaint just a cry for help.
I’ve owned and used a number of Phillips shavers over the years and this is basically the same as any other. The Design itself for this particular one is to cover a larger area of the face for quickness.
I’ve only given it 4 Stars because frustratingly as other reviews have stated I keep turning it off acidently while shaving. It needs a slider switch as opposed to a button press. Washing it under the tap when prompted ( Flashes) to do that after every shave,Leaves a rather unpleasant smell. Least it does on mine. Got this shaver in the sale, so it was a little cheaper than normal.
Been putting off getting electric razor since last foil one gave me constant rashes. This one? Being able to wet shave with foam makes me wish I had bought it a long time ago. Easy to clean, shaves very well and good battery life.
5/5
This the last in a line of Philips electrical shavers I’ve had, over many years – simply the best. The only quibble is that the trimmer is a little too small – but that’s inevitable given the overall dimensions.
The product is a very good one but there aren’t any cleaning brushes to clean it once it has been used. Also there isn’t a storage case/bag to keep it in.
Tge product dies what Zi expected it would and leaves a clean shave.9
I bought this shaver for the conveniance value. It is good but does not give a realy close shave that I get with a blade. That said, I still think it is worth the investment because it is less bother and quicker. One thing that should have been supplied is a brush to clean the shaving head.
For context, this review has been written after about a week of use.
I tend to get razor rash and ingrown hairs super easily, This is the first electric shaver I’ve used, and it has drastically reduced the severity of the rashes I get, Which is super great for me, and I think it works out to being cheaper than buying fusion 5 blades over the long term.
Of course this doesn’t give as close shave as a disposable razor, However this is pretty normal for electric shavers, and is thus unsurprising, but it does get pretty close assuming it’s clean and you use it wet. It also is really great for body hair.
Which brings me a to a second point if it encounters large hair it tends to build up hair underneath the blades that doesn’t get washed out, this means you may need to dismantle the rotor every so often if you use it in a bath where hair has been shed, or because you haven’t shaved in a while. But it’s not incredibly difficult to do.
It’s likely that I’ll still hold on to and use my fusion 5 for certain areas that the rotors don’t exactly catch well as the head of the shaver is quite large, but this is really good and has really reduced the amount of rashes I get, and likely the amount I’ll end up spending on razor blades. So overall it really fulfils my use case but YMMV.
Bought as a gift, husband loves it,said its the best shaver he has ever had,so I am happy with that.
This is the best razor I’ve owned. Excellent smooth shave…even if you have a few days stubble. The battery is great and lasts a v long time without charging. Overall I am delighted with this and would highly recommend.
Bought as a replacement for an older model. This is much better. Quieter long lasting battery charge and sleeker. I love it.
So far has worked well. Have not had it long enough to give much more information.
Nothing to dislike with this shaver. I have moved from a wet shave using a blade to dry shaving using the Philips, so far so good. I changed over for the convenience of not needing to lather up and avoiding the nicks and cuts that can come with blade shaving (not all the time, but occasionally) – and this shaver ticks both boxes for me. The shave is cleaner than I expected, and the shaver is very easy to clean. I haven’t figured out how to attach the attachment but haven’t needed it yet and will figure it out. I’ve used it around half a dozen times and have not needed to recharge it, so that’s also good for me. I got this is the Black Friday deal and have not seen it so cheap since but like it enough that I would pay more. Good shaver!
Battery life good ,not much else to mention ,pleased purchased at reduced price ,would not have been happy paying the full price. I thought item model philishave 5000 would have given a closer cleaner shave but not unfortunately.
Ice close save and more comfortable than the wet razor I used before. Battery life seems good, get about a weeks use out of it before the battery light starts flashing red (good feature)> Easy to clean, just run under the ta. Works well with shaving cream or gel. I find Gillette shaving cream in a tube gives a more comfortable shave than the aerosol type. Trimmer attachment also useful.
It appeared that some items were missing but it was the manufacturer adapting the other models to the one main box.
When they arrived they were smaller than i had imagined but they do a great job, the batteries have lasted a long time. Excellent purchase.
being using shaver for about 1 year, still working great. Charge lead is a three pin plug which is useful as it is easier to charge out of bathroom.
It is exactly announced by the seller. My husband had the old version and exchanged for this new one and according with him it has improved for better.
I bought this as a replacement for my old Philips 5400 Series. I use the shaver to shave my head. The dry shave is great & pretty quick. I usually use it in the shower with shaving foam. All in all it is a good shaver for my needs.
I had a body groom adapter with my old 5 series, it works with this new shaver as well.
Why 4 stars?
As indicated in other reviews, it comes with a 3-pin UK plug. Why? Why on earth it doesn’t come with 2 pin plug? In bathrooms, there is only 2 pin plugs for shavers.
Another downside is, it doesn’t come with a plastic shaving head travel protector. My previous 5 series had it.
The thumb is drawn to the ‘on/off’ switch during operation. Very poor.
Only used it for a month but up till now does the job I am pleased.
Was bought to replace an older modelAlthough a bit flimsy..good battery life and easy to clean good for the money
Good price battery I have to charge by the end of week gives a good shave
Needed to replace old razor as the battery had reached end of life.
This razor looks impressive but for me seems slightly less effective than the older model it replaced but good enough if you get it at a reduced price.
Replaced my old series 5000 with this, as it needed new cutters. It’s better because it has upgraded cutting heads and integral trimmer. It is certainly a closer smooth shave and seems to follow my face well. It was a Black Friday deal with a genuine saving, and I paid a bit more than I expected to, but it was worth it. There are some mixed reviews but I think that is because some relate to an earlier different model. Look at the small print to check it is the S5588 model they are referring to.
ot a bad shaver for philips only one bad thing blades not as sharp as they said in the advert ,but ive used it for a week now and still not had to re charge it yet .
This feels very cheap and flimsy but gives a good shave, I bought it for arounf 55 and it is better than the SweetLF I bought some years ago.
My previous Philips rotary worked well and then, at the recommended 2 years, i bought a replacement head. What i got was just the blades and foil parts and not a whole new head assembly (yes, it does tell you somewhere in the text but the photo deceives you). This was not as good as the original and one cutter repeatedly kept falling out – so, do you fix it and make yourself late for work or go to work half-shaved?
The new 5000 series I have bought shaves very well. It is the one without the pop-up trimmer but has a separate trimming attachment. I will not be buying a “replacement head” for it in two years’ time – I’d like to be green but they make it so hard for us.
Good product but two things I dislike:
The charger plug is a UK three prong – but most bathrooms provide a two prong 120 – 240 V charging plug.
At the very least Philips should include a simple adapter.
The carry case is too small to accommodate shaver, charger, trimmer and an adapter. The adapter is necessary for travel in the EU or USA.
The best razor of it’s kind I’ve tried. Shaves well, comfortable to hold, easy to clean, battery lasts for ages and shaves well albeit I have to shave every day with it. With a wet shave I can get away with every other day.
In fact, it works better on soapy, rather than dry, skin.
Even then it’s not the closest of shaves, especially on the neck area, so I find the best result is to finish with a wet razor.
Easy to clean, under the tap, and it holds its charge well for several days.
I’m very pleased with my purchase (so far, after about 4 weeks). It’s only getting 4 stars because its predecessor, an earlier Philishave, is a hard act to follow – it did an excellent job for 50 years and I’d still be using it if I could find a replacement for its worn out lead. So I don’t expect to be around to review the current Philishave if my heirs want to give it its 5th star 50 years from now. But in the meantime it’s currently doing an excellent job of shaving me without problems, quite unlike the cheaper non-Philishave (and non-rotary) shaver that I hurriedly bought in the nearest shop when my old Philishave’s lead began sparking after 50 years’ use (the lead had been misbehaving slightly for a few years but this had not been a real problem in practice until the sparks began). That cheaper non-rotary non-Philishave required me to stretch my skin with my fingers where shaving, took ages to properly shave some patches of my face, and came with all sorts of Do’s and Don’ts to avoid damaging the shaver. None of these problems apply to my current Philishave (nor to my earlier Philishave either) which is why I’m very pleased with it. I haven’t yet given any stars for battery life, because it’s too early for me to say (though I’ve had no battery problems so far, after using for about 4 weeks).
does the job. Good battery life so handy when going away because you don’t the charging cable. Supposed to be able to use it in shower although I didn’t feel it did very well there so I just use it normally. If you need a new shaver but don’t want to break the bank it’s worth considering.
Only part i didnt like was that there is no cover for the blades .Happy with everything else.
This is a decent shaver. The rotary heads are larger than the old type philishave and cut cleanly.
It’s easy to lift the shaver head and clean under running water.
I have one small niggle with the positioning of the off switch because when I grip the shaver to hold it in place firmly in order to trim under my chin I find myself switching the thing off. This is because the one-off switch is positioned directly under my thumb.
No doubt I shall find a way around this. But Phillips must have come across this when testing the shaver.
Bad design flaw. Otherwise it’s a good shaver.
My face is too old for comfortable shaving using this unit. Leaves my neck area sore and is not very good with imperfect surfaces. Not very forgiving – works better on my son’s young face – so back to my trusty 5blade Gillette.
Having a sensitive skin I love Philips rotary shavers as they don’t ‘burn’ me. I’ve used them for as long as I can remember for ‘an electric shave’.
My last one, a series 3000, was very weak (3 or 4 days stubble a definite no no) and didn’t give me a close shave. I was glad when it stopped holding a charge. This series 5000 is absolutely great! 4 days stubble is no problem and it shaves almost as close as using a blade. I have been using it for two weeks now and have not needed to re-charge it yet.
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the smooth & hard casing makes it slippery to hold when wet; and the on/off button is exactly where you put your thumb to hold it when shaving, making it almost impossible to avoid switching it off occasionally.
Comfortable and close shave, good battery life, get up to two weeks from one charge.
Others have commented that the on/off button is easy to catch whilst shaving, also found this but not a great issue.
The major downside is that this shaver uses a bespoke charger so when travelling have to take both the shaver and charger which is annoying. The shaver should have been engineered to charge from a standard 5V USB supply thus saving the need to take both a phone and shaver charger hence only 4 stars.
Had this shaver been powered from a standard 5V USB supply then I would have given 5 star rating.
I am not sure how long the shaver head clip will last, seems a bit fragile to me. The power button is quite sensitive and I find myself accidentally switching it off all the time, I need to hold it in a different position in order to keep the shaver going. I am not sure about the sideburn trimmer either, the fact that it is an add on instead of being integral is a bit of a pain.
It does give a reasonable shave, I don’t think that it is as good as my old Phillips of 15 years ago, I bought this one because of the wet and dry facility. It is quick to charge and battery lasts a long time. You cannot use it whilst it is plugged in has to be disconnected from mains in order to use., ( I presume a safety feature) however It does come with a UK 3 pin plug. What would have been nice would be a plastic cover for the head when not in use. the bag is OK but doesn’t give much protection.
*edited – find at the end about battery *
In the photos I compare my previous AT797 (on the right) with the just bought S3233 (on the left). The S3233 is slightly longer, but slimmer. It feels lighter too. I suppose the S3233 is the model that supersedes the AT797. The AT797 lasted 4 years and started malfunctioning all too sudden, I believe due to the damage in the sealents. However, if I compare with a razor blade, and considering the former model was bought for round about the same price as the new one, it made me save more than 100 GBP over these 4 years. If I consider I was shaving every other day before I bought the AT797 and that a blade was used 7 times on average, then I would have used a new blade every fortnight, which means 26*4=104 over a 4 year period. If we now take the price of Wilkinson Quattro blades sold at Tesco for 1.5 GBP each or Gillette Fusion sold at Tesco for no less than 2.5 GBP per blade, which are the type of blades I was using by then, then over the 4-year period a Philips shaver in this range made me save between 100 and 200 GBP. I never replaced the shaver heads either.
I have read some negative comments that the shaving doesn’t compare to the one from a razor blade. I am afraid this happens with all electric shavers: they will never give “that clean” shaving. However, I don’t have any cuts and my skin feels far less irritated than with a razor blade, even when I am comparing with the expensive ones above. It is important to note I always shave with warm water and shaving foam, even with this electric shaver.
Performance is as equally good as with the former model. My problem always is at the bottom of the neck where my hair is softer, but I got used to it. Other than that, provides me with excellent shaving. I was considering buying the more expensive and slick 5000 series with turbo +, but I don’t like the fact the trimmer is not in-built (more loose parts and assembling-disassembling means more damage happening sooner). The position of the on/off button is also not ergonomic on the 5000. I also think the end result is probably the same (didn’t have an opportunity to test) and most of it is just marketing playing our heads for a premium.
Compared to the AT797 it charges much quicker. The charger is the same, by the way, with a kind of EU plug (10 amp pins or electrodes, the chubby ones). It now brings a battery level indicator.
I am very happy with this one, and provided it gives me another 4 years of shaving, can’t really complain. If you use with warm water and shaving foam, it does give a smooth feeling, so I am quite pleased with Philips.
I decided to write this extensive review because I had to read many before I could make a final decision. I hope this can help others like me, who do not want to spend a lot of money in an electric shaver, but don’t want to risk going for less established brands just to save 20GBP (which, as shown and in the long run, is not a significant save). Brand loyalty? Maybe. But at least I have a decent shaver and I know exactly what to count from it.
*edited – about the battery*
I thought it might be useful to report how long a full charge lasted. I’ve been using the shaver every other day. First shave was on 10th of October. On the 7th November, the battery level indicator was flashing red since the minute I started it. It was sufficient for a full clean shave, without having to rush. When I finished, it still had some battery left, but I plugged it to the recharger. Therefore, a full charge allowed me to have a total of 15 clean shaves. I believe it is advertised the battery should last for 60 minutes, which is about right if not a bit better (I’d reckon it takes me 4 to 5 minutes for a full clean shave).
