It was bought as a present by a friend . He is very happy with i
Got his so i can have radio in the shed. Great radio, good sound quality, can pick up the channels i like with no crackling, like that there is the option for batteries and mains. Looks nice too, not bulky.
A radio is one of those comforting items you can either take on the go or stand in (say) a garage, home office or kitchen to provide entertainment on the day. Whilst many these days at DAB enabled here’s one that gives a more traditional listening experience with the common FM and once common AM bands joined by the less commonly seen Short Wave, or rather two different SW bands. What Short Wave brings to the party is ability to listen to the world-renowned BBC World Service as well as pick up transmissions from across the globe as Short Wave travels for near miraculous distances. Offered for review under the Amazon Vine programme, this Prunus J-15 Portable Radio operates off three D-cell batteries which is ideal if you are a tradesman working outdoors or going camping or caravanning; or alternatively mains operation if the radio is to be positioned in home or office. Those batteries are capable of lasting up to 20 hours. Unusually it includes a fairly powerful torch in the side, operated by a slider switch on the front, showing a novel use if camping.
The bands are:
* FM 87-108 MHz
* AM 520-1710 KHz
* SW1 3.2-10.0 MHz
* SW2 10.0-22.0 MHz
The most useful to me is FM, which has lots of familiar BBC channels as well as many independents, and comes across in great quality. AM similarly features many BBC stations, in particular 5 Live Sport, and popular independents like Absolute Radio. It’s SW that is new to me though and with just a little internet research there are literally hundreds to choose from in many languages, meaning this is particularly suitable for someone missing a taste of home.
There’s an included instruction leaflet in English, German, Spanish, and Italian; but in practice everything is pretty intuitive. Features include
* Inbuilt carrying handle which is fixed, not allowing any swivel.
* Mains cable
* Extendable/stowable aerial
* Large and accurate two part tuning dial with an outer dial for quick movement, an inner dial for fine tuning — a feature I found particularly useful on the tightly packed SW bands
* On/off dial
* Standard 3.5 mm headphone jack
* Auxiliary line in jack, meaning it can work as a speaker box for music played from e.g. a mobile phone
* Torch feature
* Green display light to show strongest station tuning
* Slider knob for band selection
The sound quality is pretty clear, but due to the compact size of 23.5cm x 15.5cm x 4.7cm its best described as transistor radio quality coming from the 3W inbuilt speaker– acceptable, but not what you expect from DAB. It’s also pretty lightweight.
The radio is finished in muted black and silver — very understated, and pretty elegant to my mind. I spent quite a bit of time seeing what was available on short wave. Could it be better? Well, its traditional scale readout, which can mean it’s a bit hit and miss to find the station you want. A digital display would be better, meaning there’s no mistake in tuning. At 30.97 I think it offers reasonable value for money, and should have a long life given the build quality.
This is a standard portable radio not a Dab one so the reception is never going to be as good. It’s also crackly when previously it’s not with Dab.
The radio is very good quality and I’ve got no concerns about durability.
It’s powered by and AC transformer or 3 x D batteries which is exactly like they were years ago.
This one has a flashlight included though so is good for fishing or camping etc. It is also good for bbqs as the sound quality in general is good it’s just the radio station quality that’s worse than Dab.
I also think it’s quite expensive for a standard radio flashlight and I’d be looking around before commiting to this one.
Just loved it. Perfectly designed and works perfectly. Sound quality is very good. Good catching range. Also comes with emergency flashlight. Specially useful in night and for elderly people
This is a radio that is portable and ideal to bring for truck camping.
The radio has a wide range of coverage such as FM: 87-108MHz, AM: 520-1710KHz, SW1: 3.2 -10.0MHz, and SW2: 10.0 – 22.0MHz. Also, it works with a battery and has a built-in powerful DSP chip and 31inch long telescopic antenna. There’s also a built-in flashlight located at the side of the radio, plus the different visible buttons such as an On-Off-Vol wheel, a band switch, a Light On/Off switch, and a knob for tuning. This radio has a dimension of 237 by 158 by 50mm and weighs about 584g.
It is a radio that is well-built and entirely constructed of plastic. The clarity of the sound from this radio surprised me as I didn’t anticipate this kind of good quality. Having a basic radio with nice sound is pretty reviving. It’s just a simple portable radio, nothing fancy. It’s perfect for my tiny workspace.
Overall, it is a great radio in terms of quality and clearness of sound. The level of volume is also just enough for me. I think I would have this every time with me.
This is the perfect companion at home or out and about. I use the electric connection while at home and the battery option when out and about. It will make a good asset when camping next year.
The tuning is simple with different wave lengths to choose from for the best reception. There is an aerial too to help pick up radio station signals.
The sound quality, I feel, is very clear. It didn’t have any problems of the signal loosing a connection. The sound quality and reception stayed clear and constant. To use this outdoors, without an electricity connection you will need 3 D batteries, not supplied. So far I have tried the radio at home and at the park, with the quality of sound being just as good while out and about as at home.
This is a great product. It’s good quality and tough. A standard, old fashioned wireless radio. Simple switches and dials for torch, on/off and volume, and band wave controls. It’s simple and fairly capable. Tuning into the stations is good. The little green light let’s you know you’ve tuned in. The reception and clarity is very good but the speaker has its limitations. There wasn’t much of a volume range, but enough for your tool shed or campsite.
There’s a headphone socket, not that I can see that being used much. There’s also an auxiliary socket, to plug your phone or external device into, again with limited uses. I like the torch. It could be very useful after your beach barbecue or the walk across the campsite after dark.
All said, I really like this radio. It makes me feel nostalgic. It’s simple and it works. When there is no Internet, you have the original wireless. Its just a little too pricey.
A cute and neat radio gets all the stations you could want
It also has light when held sideways
All 3 bands for your listening
It has an antenna attached too
Really nice looking radio
Can receive any channel, the radio effect is good, recommended
I really enjoyed using this radio, it is quite basic when it comes to features but it has fantastic sound quality and is very easy to use.
I found the radio easy to tune and it picks up the station quickly. The sound it produce is extremely clear and I like how the radio can get very loud. It can be powered via main or via batteries which is great as it is extremely portable and easy to carry around Great if you want a standard basic radio.
Hope you found my review helpful.
-Unboxing-
Packaging for this was very small and simple, no unnecessary extra cardboard and everything inside was packaged well and securely. Everything on the cover tell you everything you need to know and was (as far as boxes go) really nice. Inside was:
1 x Radio with LED Light
1 x 3 Pin UK Mains plug
1 x Manual
-Product-
This little radio is perfect for just something to have set up whilst working in the background. I do a lot of stuff outside and although its not waterproof (Not that I expected it to be) it does have a very clear sound which did take me by surprise!
The feel of the material is very 80s plastic sort of vibe, but I quite liked it. Being made of plastic was also nice and light instead of lugging a massive weighted radio around. It was small so can tuck out the way whilst I am working, and tuning was super simple giving you range of 4 different wave lengths. AM, FM and 2 x SM.
Turning on just plug into the mains or insert 3 x D size batteries if you wish to have it wireless and turn the volume knob till you hear the click. Then to tune select your wavelength and twist the dial on the side until you get a green light on the front. I had to move it super slowly to get a real fine tuning but its not the end of the world.
The LED light on the side is not like a floodlight however it was a lot brighter than I was expecting! A great feature I never would have thought to place on a radio but as the sun went down it was actually really useful and like this idea.
-Good points-
– Easy to setup
– Easy to use
– Good brightness
– Battery and Mains Powered
– Clear sound
– Loud
– Lightweight
-Bad Points-
– Cheap feel ( but I think that was deliberate)
Nice simple radio, great for camping or working outdoors.
Nice change to disconnect from the Internet and just listen to what’s on and roll with it.
Feels sturdy and a cool old school look
Seems fairly solid, this prunus radio is basic the sound when you find a decent station is good, it’s FM, AM, S1 and S2, it does not have radio 1, radio 2 markers etc, it’s just numbers, I do like a radio that you can turn the dial to the station you want, with this unless you know the frequency it’s a bit of a hit and miss, it’s ideal for me to use in the garden, you might have trouble getting batteries out as there is no ribbon underneath but it’s not too bad, it comes with the lead, the handle is set so doesn’t fold down but it’s not too high so it’s all fairly compact, all knobs etc easy to use, the torch is a nice plus the light is good, you can plug your computer or phone in to play music so the radio becomes a speaker via an aux plug lead, which is not supplied. It comes with a simple but informative instruction booklet with a number of languages, the width excluding the knobs is about 22cm, the height including handle is 16cm and the depth is about 4.5cm, it’s a nice two toned grey and although lightweight is still weighty enough to feel solid, 4 stars as not sure I would pay quite so much.
According to the box this radio arrives in, PRUNUS was the top-selling radio brand on Amazon worldwide in 2021 — visit the Amazon PRUNUS store to learn the story of the brand (why it is named for the Prunus tree) and to view the wide range of radios it currently has on offer. This J-15 model is a traditional analogue radio that covers FM, MW & SW — but as it uses an American DSP chip there is sadly no Long Wave. It is ideal for everyday use on mains power, and on batteries in emergencies when the mains may be off for a while — it also features a useful LED torch. The radio section has a simple AM/FM tuner with no DAB — you wouldn’t expect DAB on this type of analogue model — and the batteries required are three of the large D type more commonly used in torches rather than radios these days. FM is really good on this radio, AM works well, but you do notice the difference in sound quality after listening to FM, and there is not really much left to listen to on SW any more since many broadcasters have moved their International services online only. Currently around thirty-three pounds from Amazon this PRUNUS J-15 portable radio is a perfect for use as a kitchen radio, and the battery option makes it really portable when taking it out-and-about with you. This J-15 model offers good value for money and is well-designed for it’s purpose — personally I would rather have had LW than SW but that is not an option and you will probably need to look at Roberts radios if you want a UK LW model. However, this PRUNUS J-15 portable analogue radio deserves five stars for features and value at the price.
The radio coms in a cardboard box together with a fitted power flex with a 3Amp, 3-pin UK plug, an a user manual. The radio is rated for 220V/50Hz AC electricity.
The radio is well-made and of all plastic construction. The handle does not rotate or fold down. The long aerial can be moved within a single plane, parallel to the radio. It does not rotate 360′.
On/off is via the volume control. Click on, turn up the volume; turn down and click off. Tuning is done with the rotating knob. The single knob has two grip points, the outside edge and smaller centre. Rotating the knob moves the line indicator along the wavelengths chart. When the best reception is reached, a green light shows.
Choosing which waveband to search for is done by a four-stop sliding switch on the front of the radio. The other sliding switch turns the end torch on and off. The radio can be powered by mains electricity or by three D cell batteries.
This is a true retro style radio in that it does not support DAB and neither do I. The bands covered are FM, AM, SW (2-10MHz) and SW (10-20MHz). I was surprised by how clear the sound is from this radio. I wasn’t expecting this quality.
It’s quite refreshing to have a simple radio with good sound. No bells and whistles, just a straightforward portable radio. It’s ideal for your small work space or for your shed.
