I bought a nice laptop from HP, and even though it had good specs, the one thing that let it down was the Nvme drive. Not exactly the quickest. So when my Mrs had the sudden urge of kindness towards me, I took the chance and got her to order me one of these bad boys.
Yes, it is fast. I got the 2Tb version which I have now installed Linux Mint onto it, as Windows 11 plays up so much you lose the benefit of having good hardware.
Well worth it if your system can handle it.

I installed 1TB 990 on a MSI MEG Ace for windows 11 and everything seems sweet, The only problem i had was intalling windows and getting stuck at the Lets get connected screen that kept on looping because of no drivers!!! so I bypassed it in the console by pressing Shift and F10 then clicking the console box to type oobebypassnro, Then it will reboot and let you carry on installing by entering region and keyboard then by selecting I don’t have internet. On the next screen, you click Continue with limited setup to resume installing windows 11 and alls good.
Had some issues installing windows on this, not sure if it was due to the fact I had 3xnvme m.2 installed, but had another boot drive anyway so got around the issues. Performs very well!
A great drive. Not much to say. I got this to replace my old 500GB main-drive. The speeds are insane but for a gamer and dev I honestly don’t notice the difference between this and my old 2000 MB/S m.2, so if it’s just the speed you are upgrading for I probably wouldn’t recommend it unless you have specific reasons, but if it’s the huge capacity you are upgrading for then I definitely would recommend it.
With the increasing SSD prices I wanted to fill the last M.2 slot on my motherboard and wanted a decent SSD at a decent price and something fast and reliable. When this came up on offer it fitted all those criteria. Easy install which took minutes, at switch on Samsung Magician detected a new firmware was available. After the SSD setup in Disk Management which again took a minute to do and was very easy I updated the firmware and rebooted. I then did a few bench tests in Samsung Magician and getting approx 7439 Read and 6950 Write and temps of 26C and this is without any additional heatsink added. This last slot on my motherboard doesn’t have any compared to the other 2 slots.
These Samsung SSDs offer great performance and reliability overall. The main issue is with how the self encryption works.
From the factory they come with OPALv2 enabled, but not eDrive. So you can use sedutil or the BIOS to encrypt them, but not Bitlocker. To enable Bitlocker support you need to use Samsung Magician. The issue is that you need to run it under Windows, and then re-install Windows because it won’t recognize the drive as eDrive complaint until you do. Arguably more of a flaw in the way that Microsoft does things, but Crucial seem to be able to make both eDrive and OPALv2 available from the factory.
Samsung drives are not cheap, but I expect them to last and have had good results in the past.
Item arrived quickly and was easy to install. Has met the speeds stated and have not noticed any heat issues etc. Would recommend this product if looking to boost your storage size on pc or ps5. If for ps5 just be careful undoing the screws on the ps5 itself as they seem cheaply made. Speed of copying files back and forth seems super quick so not much waiting around and the heatsink seems to be doing an effective job. Item also has an led light installed but admittedly this isn’t something I care to much for but added bonus if you do.
Excellent replacement of my previous 960 EVO. Cloning was dead simple with the Samsung Data Migration software. Really fast drive. Make sure it is correctly set up in PC BIOS to get full benefit.
I bought this to spice up my Asus Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard and because I already had the Samsung Magician software installed. I’m writing this review to help others with this specific motherboard as by far and away the biggest problem I had was getting this thing into the motherboard. Everything else was a breeze – but this frustrated me for weeks.
I knew I would need a standoff to keep the SSD level and a screw to hold it in place. Asus had provided me with a bag of M.2 screws – a silver standoff and 3 golden unusual looking screws. I’m still not sure what I’m meant to do with them. In theory, one of the golden screws should have gone into one of the stand-off nuts on the motherboard – but all three of them are too big and they don’t. The nuts on the motherboard are TINY, like 5mm, I don’t think anything can fit in there other than the tiniest, narrowest screw around. From looking at other peoples videos I think Asus did not provide the correct standoff and screw. When I contacted Asus support, they were useless. I decided the only solution was to remove the nut from the motherboard but finding a spanner tiny enough to grip the nut tightly enough to remove it was a pain.
TLDR: If your Asus Z170 Pro Gaming motherboard is like mine, you will need a tiny spanner to remove a tiny 5mm standoff nut on the motherboard. Then you will find a normal screw can be screwed into the hole and that will hold the SSD in place.
After that, it was all easy. For the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, you will need to shift around some cables if you have anything plugged into the SATA Port 1 as that is needed for the M.2 drive. I had the latest BIOS: 3805 which meant I didn’t even have to go into BIOS to get the drive recognised. Remember, this motherboard only supports PCIe Gen3 so the 990 Pro being Gen4 is somewhat overkill.
Make sure you have inserted the SSD all the way into its slot.
Disk Management – recognise and format.
Then Samsung magician: make sure you’re online, refresh the drives until a firmware update is offered. This is a must! The latest is 4B2QJXD7 and the one I bought was 0B2QJXD7 which means it had a serious bug with the firmware which was reported at the beginning of the year.
So getting the Samsung 990 Pro into my motherboard took 3 weeks and setting it up in Windows took about 15min. Some people say about having to reboot several times to get Windows to recognise it but I didn’t have to.
Hope this is helpful to someone who runs into the same problem with this particular motherboard.

Installation was easy and new drive showed in Disc Manager. After running a disk check on the original ‘c’ drive, closing all programs, switching off the virus checking software and removing the Ethernet (internet) cable, I ran the Samsung Data Migration software and it performed a migration of the original ‘c’ drive to the new Samsung SSD 990 PRO drive in under 10 minutes. After removing the original ‘c’ drive and booting from the new drive, I ran a performance test on Samsung Magician and the results were exemplary for this disk with read and write speeds of 7463 MB/s and 6909 MB/s respectively.
This is arguably the best PCI4.0 NVME M.2 drive you can get right now, but dont over pay. The Cyber Monday “deal” is 30 MORE than the Black Friday price a week ago pushing it to ~150 for the 2tb version.
For that price id get the WD Black SN850X which comes in a very close 2nd and about 50 cheaper.
Shop around.
This is one of the very best PCIe Gen4 drives out there. The one I received is quite a recent batch and firmware so hopefully won’t get any of the issues that Samsung had for a little while with some of their drives.
Been working for a few months 24/7 so far.
I have multiple NVMe Samsung drives which have been on 24/7 for over 4 years, so I expect the same from this one.
I have replaced the existing (factory fitted) Samsung 2242 M2 540mbs SSD with the non heatsink Samsung 990 pro 1tb (which is 2280) on my recently purchased Lenovo 5i pro 16 laptop (running I7-12700H). The laptop has a soft heatsink stuck to the rear surface of the keyboard which covers about half of the new SSD and I am keeping an eye on the SSD temperature (via Samsung Magician) to see if I might need to replace that with a larger one. So far, the hottest time was when I was transferring from the old SSD to the new but it was pretty quick so maybe not a great test. The current working temperature is 30 degrees so well within the limit. I guess the heatsink version might fit if you remove the existing soft heat sink but it would be a very tight. I use the laptop for music production with Cubase 13 pro and Izotope Ozone and RX10 and so far the SSD is showing improvements with rendering times compared to the previous SSD. A better test might be with games but I am not really into those and the built in graphics card would not be the best for that either. But its a good purchase for the overall increase in performance and additional storage capacity.
Another excellent Samsung NVME SSD with 2TB storage. I’ve used Samsung SSDs for years now and never had an issue. Good to know that this is their fastest yet and uses less energy too. It is super fast in a Dell XPS 15, although I can’t tell the difference from the previous version 980 PRO. I always pay a bit more for Samsung because of their reliability.
Bought this for my new build I’m always very happy with Samsung SSDs got it on prime day as it was on a very good deal and I’m getting the advertised speeds.
Please before you buy check which screws and standoffs your motherboard takes. It took a second try of buying a screw and stand-off for it to fit in my case. Nothing wrong with the ssd but do remember it doesn’t come with a screw or stand-off.
According to the Samsung app, the drive is doing 6500 MB/s. The PC benchmark website utility says 3550 MB/s, so I’m not sure. Regardless, I was able to install Win10 64 Pro from a USB stick on the drive 2nd time around without any further issues. The first install failed when I put the drive in the #1 m2 x4 slot and the bios didn’t recognize it. The #2 slot is tied to the X570 chipset also running at x4.
One issue I noticed is that the drive is running at 45-50 deg C which feels hot to me considering my office is under 20 deg C and the CPU is running at 35-45 deg C.
Early days – hope the drive lasts longer than my Corsair Force MP600 which quit working after 4 years.
Combined with the correct enclosure, this is lovely and fast. I’m getting a sustained 2850Mb/s out of it. It does get hot though so make sure you heatsink it.
Running the 1TB 990 PRO in an Asus B650E board with Ryzen 7800X3D. No problems at all and works fine.
This is a high performance drive with good power efficiency that matches the manufacturers claimed performance (see my benchmark screenshot). My drive shipped with an old firmware so make sure you update it to the latest version with Samsung Magician.
Overall a very good drive with a decent 5 year warranty from Samsung.
Blazing fast for small and large files. Big upgrade when transferring from my Sabrent rocket plus to the Samsung 990! The Wd SN770 it replaced was really slow in comparison. Also the 990 has a pseudo cache which really keeps the drive from slowing down. Always by nvme drives with Caches. Speed doesn’t matter if the drives can’t maintain it! Definitely worth the upgrade.
Added this to a laptop that was a year old where it’s existing Intel Octane drive had worn out after running a database server.
Installed this and re-checked performance and IOPS were better in each category when tested with CrystalDiskMark.

Had issues with the one I brought before but this one no issues at all.
Did a fresh install on this drive and ran into constant screen freezing, then i installed the samsung software and did a firmware update on the drive which fixed the issue and now it runs extremely fast without any issue. So make sure you update the firmware before u install anythinh on i
Managed to grab this for ~68 which was an absolute steal. It’s rediculously fast and very easy to install. It’s worth noting, that if you’re using this for accesing large files (Photoshop, CAD, 4K video) this is absolutely perfect, but if you’re working primarily online, or gaming, you’ll probably not experience the full speed of this beast as it’ll be bottlenecked by internet speeds. Either way, it’s an absolutely perfect drive for booting windows.
Migrating the windows installation from my old drive to the new one was easy with the Samsung Magician software and I just needed to stick the ssd in the ugreen usb c enclosure I purchased along with the drive. Once transfer was complete it was just the case of swapping the drives in my pc which is slightly fiddly due to the small retaining screw in a small space because of the video card but once that was done, everything booted up and worked as it should.

As I was in the process off upgrading my new laptop with memory I thought that I should upgrade the SSD from 516GB to 2TB, this was just as easy as the other memory installation that I have done to this laptop.
I was worried about there not being a heat sink with this product but I need not have worried as it does not seem to over heat, I used CPUID to check the temps etc and everything is as it should be.
The 990pro gives a sizeable bump over the previous Gen 4 980pro and massive gap over any previous Gen 3 SSD. My only gripe is that you can’t get one in a larger 4TB capacity and are limited to 2TB.
Installation is easy as always, however as these Gen 4 SSDs get a lot hotter than previous generations I would definitely recommend buying a heat sink and some thermal pads to keep the temps low under load. Might not be an issue for people with modern Mobos however if you are using a laptop, then a thin copper heat sink is a must in my opinion.
Read and write speeds are best in class for Gen 4 SSDs, however some 990 pros on an early firmware have an issue which could potentially permanently damage the SSDs as such I would highly recommend you install Samsung Magician and upgrade to the newer firmware before doing anything else on it.
Would highly recommend especially at how well these are priced.
I mean it’s a top of the line pcie gen 4 ssd. The random operations are in line with future pcie gen 5 ssds (as yknow, the nand flash and controller can only be so good) and it has very fast sequential reads/writes. Although it’s an awesome ssd along with samsung’s reliability in ssds, i cant recommend it to anyone unless you seriously need the fast storage. For an average consumer you’re better of with a cheaper pcie gen 3 ssd or sata ssd as there’s no real difference in speeds outside of niche applications such as microsoft’s upcoming direct storage or certain other careers. Although it does feel nice having an insanely fast ssd
Well the first bit is yes ! I have it in a PCIe ver 3 – so if you have a newer mobo you might improve slightly on what i am getting – which you can see above – 3363 s/read 3390 s/write – now this compares to 2924 and 1540 for the 970 version on the same motherboard – so a good increase.
So reliability – well I can’t say yet as it’s been running for <3 hrs ! - I will update if anything else happens. Now, as the world and its mum knows the first issues of this ssd were marred by faulty firmware. I can confirm that the version supplied by Amazon (itself not marketplace) in July already has the new firmware installed at purchase. I would suggest downloading the Samsung Magician software to chk when you purchase, if not update.
If you are buying this then I suppose it is to upgrade an existing install or new build. In the former case you should see perhaps a 10% over the 970 or 5% over 980 I think. If its a new build why would you buy anything slower.
Mine came with the updated (3B2QJXD7) firmware already applied. Manufacturing production date was end of May 2023. This was 2 months prior to the purchase date, so these are confirmed new stock not the older drives with bad firmware.
Installation was easy enough. The drive comes in a box a little wider than a phone, with a slip out plastic tray with the drive held in that. No m.2 screw or mini screwdriver is included. Make sure you’ve got the one that came with your motherboard, or order another. You’ll also need a micro screwdriver for the screw as they’re very small. Depending on your motherboard and GPU setup, you may also need to move the GPU to access the m.2 slot to install. Some motherboards (thankfully) are now starting to use clips for the drive rather than screw stand offs.
After installation, the BIOS picked up the drive on power on. If you’re doing a clean install of Windows, you can continue as normal. Otherwise, Samsung do offer two tools to help move your existing Windows install to the new drive. These are Samsung Data Migration and Samsung Magician.
As the name suggests Data Migration will allow you to clone your existing drive to the new one so you can boot from it. It works really well, but may take some time if you’re moving directly from a Harddisk to NVMe M.2.
The Samsung Magician gives you some additional information about the drive and allows you to resize some dead (unused) space on the drive to help prolong the life span of the drive. It’s only really needed if you’re writing a large amount of data constantly to the drive with it near full. But it’s a nice feature never the less.
I’ve got two of these drives and they’re on a 10Gig network and are heavily hit and not had any issues with heat, so you probably don’t need a heat sink. The price of the drive with an heat sink is a little excessive if you do want one. Check other listings on amazon for aftermarket heatsinks that clip on in the same way… but again depending on your motherboard it may already include a heatsink for the m.2 slot.
Overall, a really nice purchase if you want very fast read/write speeds with a large amount of space.
