I enjoyed nearly everything in this game except the performance. Running it in performance mode I ended up having so many bad framerate moments across the game, especially in towns. It was never unplayable but it still annoyed me, as the graphics are not even that amazing honestly. Story, characters, world and gameplay was very good though.
This is my first Star Ocean game and I enjoyed it quite a bit. In terms of JRPGs, I mostly play FF games and older PS1/2 JRPGs because I don’t really like anime and find the voice acting and visual style off-putting, but I really liked the combat and had a great time exploring the world and destroying random NPCs at Es’owa.
The story was okay, but nothing too special, and the characters were a bit dull and simple. I did cringe at some of the dialogue in the game, but overall I didn’t have a hard time getting into it. Some of the characters even grew on me eventually, even if they’re as deep as a puddle.
The flying mechanic was pretty cool too, both in combat and outside of it, but I wish there were more upgrades available for it to extend flight duration.
Look, I find anime really cringe and their overused tropes really annoying, especially whiny children characters, insecure healers with lines like “I hope I’m good enough…” and the low iq, immature protagonist who’s also some sort of ultra powerful demigod who’s unaware of his true potential. But I’ve played through my first Star Ocean game this year, and my first Tales game last year (or whenever ToA came out). I powered through the cringe and I came out of these experiences feeling stronger. Why? Because the gameplay and combat looked pretty cool, and because it’s nice to try new things from time to time, even if they make your toes curl.
Solid game overall, enjoyable even for someone like me, and I’ll be definitely keeping an eye out for future SO games.
very good game plays well just a couple of flaws sometimes if you jump into certain areas you get stuck for a bit although do get out just a bit annoying also feel shops in game should have been better as when you buy item you have to come out of conversation with N.P.C then put items on then go back in and sell surely should have been able to put item on then sell without having to leave but otherwise really enjoy this game
A fun continuation of the series, an interesting storyline with a diverse party.
The game play is enjoyable, similar to the previous titles. The character designs are slightly questionable at times but once you play the game it’s not noticeable
Originally watched the review IGN did as I haven’t played Star Ocean in ages but generally I’d rate it higher than they did,
Story is pretty decent, different but good, fighting is pretty fun the flying around is pretty addictive as well & grinding certain bits defo ends up being worth it, individual characters are pretty cool as well
Chose frame rate over graphics on the settings but tbh it still feels like a next gen game the scenery in the free roam looks so stunning even more so when you look up to space
Played on PS5 & Samsung UE65AU8000KXXU
If you like JRPGs then this should be added to your collection. Not perfect by any means and not AAA quality, and maybe not as polished story wise compared to previous entries in the series, however it’s enjoyable and well worth playing. Main issue is the camera angles at times, frustrating when in battle and lots going on, otherwise gameplay is decent enough
