Used to automate my garden lights. Sensor isn’t sold for outdoor use but has been outside for weeks now (Sheltered to some extent by guttering on garage) and had some heavy rain and frost but still works fine.
Easy to connect and operate but bear in mind it needs a separate hub to work.
I have a few of these around the home and they are great. They look well with the display and are very accurate. I can see temperature trends in various rooms with the excellent app.
Alerts are also great. Eventually I’ll add some automation, but for now very happy with these.
I own several products from this ecosystem. They’ll work really well together and the features are really useful, and well designed. I would recommend getting other items from the tapo brand
Works really well via Tapo app. I’ve set my lights to motion activation after 8pm. Just remember to buy the Tapo chime hub as well, it won’t work otherwise.
This is great value. It has a long range, is accurate and reliable. it has not dropped the WiFi at all since installation.
Have used this to full effect by connecting it to a TP-Link Hub and Switch that plugs it into our attic fan. I’ve easily programmed it to turn on and off the extractor fan at set temperatures and humidities.
I own many Tapo products and this is a great addition. Don’t forget the hub or it will not connect to the app by itself.
The Tapo T100 motion sensor is cheaper (at 14) than many others but as you would expect from TP-Link is a quality item. It is significantly smaller than many competitors, easy to setup and adjust via the Tapo app and thanks to a ~868MHz connection to the required Smart Hub (H100) provides decent range and battery life. Range is obviously totally dependant on obstacles and interference so will vary significantly.
Whether this motion sensor will work for you will really depend on what you are trying to achieve. Within the Tapo ecosystem automation options are somewhat limited, it is certainly less customisable than other ecosystems. For those using Alexa two operations – motion detected & motion not detected for chosen time period – can be utilised as triggers once the Tapo skill has been installed, which opens up far more possibilities and the capability to control devices across other ecosystems. I tested using this to control some Philips Hue lights and it worked fine, albeit with occasionally a little delay. Perhaps it works more seamlessly with Tapo bulbs which can be setup in the Tapo app without involving Alexa. I did find disabling then reenabling routines triggered by this motion sensor caused them to stop working, I had to delete and recreate them.
Unlike most systems that utilise a hub/bridge/gateway, any sensors (or buttons) connected to the Smart Hub (H100) will entirely cease to function if the internet connection is lost. There is no good reason for this and in my opinion is a very poor decision by TP-Link, local functionality is an absolute necessity for a reliable smart home. Light switches or security sensors not functioning because of a lost internet connection is a really dumb problem to introduce.
The advertised idea of using these in conjunction with the Smart Hub as a burglar alarm is sadly farcical. It is not loud enough to scare off anyone plus can be easily unplugged by a burglar. It is however useful as a means to alert you via your phone and it also keeps a log of triggered times, which is all I wanted it for. If you have any Tapo bulbs or plugs it can of course be used to turn these on/off also.
Do a little research to ensure its capabilities meet your requirements and don’t purchase during one of Amazon’s periodic temporary price hikes and you should be satisfied.
Really good quality and so easy to setup and use. Can be used for automated tasks if wanted. App shows historic data and readings are simple
A++ device with smart plugs if your a reptile owner and keep snakes or dragons etc. cheaper than ones you get from pet stores and no wires in vivariums for your pet to get wrapped up in.
Bought these instead of spending money on a alarm system.
I have one of my brick outhouse that will alert me if the door is opened. Especially helpful when I’m out or at work. It’s a fair way from my router but still works great.
Have one on my bk door and front door also. Have no alarm set but will when I’m away or at work.
It still lets me know when the door is open though.
I put one of this inside my van and the chime alarm inside my house.The sensor shouldn’t be very far away from house though,only good if you have a drive way in front of your house. Try to place the Hub as close as possible to the sensor.
You need a TP-Link Tapo Smart Iot Hub with Chime with it so you get alarms inside your house if someone breaks into hour van/car/shed.

A nice piece of kit, so easy to install as you just stick it on the wall. It does need the hub to make it work so be aware of this. And no adjustment to not come on when ambient light is bright enough. But still a great produc
I’ve been wanting a couple of sensors to activate the light in each bathroom and decided to bite the bullet due to these being on offer and being already familiar with Tapo due to cameras/bulbs/plugs already installed. Easy to set up with the hub and even easier to set a routine to trigger both generic smart bulbs and Tapo ones using Alexa! My guests no longer have to announce they need the loo for me to voice control the lights for them! Fabulous!
I purchased a few of these and the sensor with the display and I’m overall very happy. This is the sort of sensors I’ve been waiting for a long time. They integrate well with the app and need the hub to connect to the internet. All working well and easy to setup. They have given me some great information including using them to hang from the included lanyard in a wardrobe to understand humidity levels. There are also sticky pads for placing on a wall in each room as required. Handy to know what’s going on through the day and sort out problems in the home. For example, the reason the draft from the hallway to the living when the living room door is open, is because the hallway is 1 degree cooler than the living room. I then adjust the radiators to equalise or higher temperature and now there is no longer a draft.
This has worked well with led lights I’ve put into my kitchen, as with everyone trying to keep Electric bills down I’ve bit the bullet with smart home devices!
So purchased with the Tapo Hub (which you need) set up was very easy and both paired almost instantly with no faffing, my Tapo led lights connected with ease and set up the motion sensor on the Alexa app which was also very easy to do! So the lights are no longer left on all the time by kids! They go off when motion isn’t detected, there’s all kinds of routines you can set up!
The price has now gone up since I purchased and I wish I’d brought more before then as I want one for my landing light to try save money there instead of leaving the light on all night (every little counts right?)
But 30 seems excessive! Leaving the Tapo brand you can pick up two for 5 less…
These door contacts are relatively small as they use a button cell to power them as opposed to the more often used AAA battery. To get over this, Tapo utilised different frequency to Wi-Fi which uses less power. The sensors are supposed to last a year before battery replacement is needed, but I cannot comment on this as I’ve only just purchased and fitted them.
The sensors are small. This aids the fitting in tighter spaces. One of my previous mag sensors I needed to extract the magnet from its casing to fit it all in.
They connect to the Tapo app BUT; you need the Tapo H100 Hub to connect them to it. The reason for this is the low power frequency used cannot directly connect to your Wi-Fi. On a positive note here, the H100 Hub acts as a Hub, a Siren and a Doorbell Sounder (when paired with a Tapo Smart Button) simultaneously. It takes up a mains socket, but is only the size of a Tapo Smart Plug.
Once connected to the H100 Hub, the phone app takes over and you can set Smart Actions and Notifications from it. However, if you have Alexa, the Hub and its various sensors are added automatically to it, and you can use the sensors to activate other items that are part of the Alexa platform.
Fitting the sensors are a breeze. 3M pads are included and seem up to the job. For those with offset doors and windows (those that close ON the frame as opposed to LEVEL with it) are in for a treat as the magnets are capable of closing the contact on an offset door. My doors have a 15mm offset and the sensors easily accommodate this.
I found it better to connect the sensors to the app before fitting them.
Incidentally, any power loss to the Hub will show the sensors as disconnected in the app upon reconnection. They are connected, but need activating once for them to show up in the app.
Range is supposed to be huge due to the lower wireless frequency used, but I find it average. I have a large-ish 250 sq/M house over 2 floors and had to centralise the Hub carefully. The signal strength is either “High”, “Medium” or “Weak”. “Weak” seems to be everything between “On the edge of failing to connect to completely disconnected, so be aware you might need to reposition the Hub to accommodate the Sensor positions if they are wide apart or you have a large house.
It is clear the platform will expand with time, so no doubt more Smart devices will become available as time progresses and the app and functionality will expand too. One thing that Tapo should consider is using geofencing to activate alarm functions. Adding the facility to detect when everyone with the Tapo app has left the building and set the alarm would be a fantastic addition. Similarly when anyone with a registered Tapo app is detected by the Hub, the alarm could be disarmed automatically.
At the moment the overall rating is 5* I have knocked off one star under “Wi-Fi signal” because the “long range’ boasted about is not really forthcoming. Tapo appear to have forgotten that a lot of new houses are basically Faraday cages full of foil-backed plasterboard and insulation stopping all those lovely wireless signals from finding the Hub.
Works like it should.
One thing the instructions miss is that you will need to power cycle the hub you attach it too afterwards as it pairs in the software but doesnt do anything until then. I had mine overnight, set it up, tried to trigger the hallway lights between a certain time when the front door is opened. Wouldnt work. checked all the settings, perfect. Registered the event in the logs but didnt process the automation (which i later realized is a slightly event event message).
Troubleshooted it but until i got a smart button and i had the same issue with that i decided to power cycle the hub. Worked straight after, winner.
Bought this sensor on spec as I already had a Tapo hub connecting my light switches.
It took a long time to arrive but I’m happy so far. Two shaped magnets are provided which can be stuck onto the back of the unit for mounting on ferromagnetic surfaces or you can attach the sticky pads instead for other types of surface or hang it up from its lanyard. The device is extremely light allowing very flexible placement.
The blurb on Amazon claims it updates every 2 seconds. However the graphs and downloaded CSV files I’m getting from the Tapo app suggest that it is logging at no faster than once every fifteen minutes. I’ve not yet determined the frequency at which it is transmitting but given the small battery then even using the low-power radio link to the hub would flatten it if it were transmitting too often.
The device is not suitable for outdoor or in-freezer mounting unless it is protected by a waterproof enclosure but this of course will impair the humitity function.. (I use the smallest in the Ikea Istad double-seal food bags for such purposes.)
The range on this device is incredible, all my smart kit connected easily and speaker is loud .
Having previously been a fan of govee light strips I started to look at other brands as the govee would fail to keep a uniform colour and after a lot of replacements I decided my time is worth more.
So back to this review.
I decided on Tapo LED lights and found them extremely good quality and then added WiFi plugs and then bulbs.
Could not be happier that I did. Far better to have all in one app.
I then had the problem of making my kitchen light Smart as it’s a fluorescent tube light.
I purchased this to use with the S210 switch which is also amazing.
So I had to purchase this hub to make it work with smart speakers.
Since this I’ve purchased the Smart button to use as doorbell and for the money I personally am very happy and wish I’d found tapo before govee and Philips hue.
Sold every Philips hue bulb and hub and still have money left over.

I have quite a few Tapo devices and they are all excellent in build quality, come in sturdy packaging, the ease of use is great, and the Tapo app is great, too. There’s not much to not like.
However, the Tapo brand is the budget brand of TP-Link and coming in at 30 odd quid, I find this expensive for what it is. You will also need to purchase the Tapo H100 Hub as an additional cost, because this motion sensor does not simply connect directly to your Wi-Fi router.
One slight ‘flaw’ (in my opinion), is the fact this motion sensor cannot detect ambient light. So, if you have it controlling the lights in a room, ambient light is not taken into consideration. Therefore your lights will be turned on or off regardless of it being midday or midnight.
It would have been nice for it to detect daylight and therefore prevent certain triggers, but besides the extra electronics which would be involved (and increase in cost), maybe this would have depleted the battery much earlier? I’m sure TP-Link/Tapo must have taken this into consideration at the design stage.
Anyhoo, it’s still five stars because it’s a fantastic little device. Just remember you will also need to purchase the Tapo H100 Hub, as it does not connect directly to your router.

Unlike other smart home hubs I have tried the Tp-Link Tapo Hub connected simply without out any issues. My Tapo light switches were found and work perfectly with it and connecting to Alexa via the Tapo Android app worked perfectly allowing home automation by voice control and remote but also triggering by PIR sensors.
All the Tp-Link devices I have in my home including routers, power line networking, cameras, Kasa and Tapo switches and plugs have never given me an issues or problems setting up and using, this on stark contrast to generic ZigBee devices.
Only slight negative is the instructions supplied with Tapo devices is a little sparse but much better than the almost zero documentation supplied with generic ZigBee devices.

I have an oil filled radiator plugged in to a Tapo P100 plug, and with this sensor, I have set up two automations in the tapo app, between 19:00 – 07:00, if the temp get to under 17c, it turns the plug on and therefore the heater, when the temps gets to 20c, it turns the plug back off, and does this throughout the night keeping the room just right for her.
I just came on to buy another but all sold out at the moment.

This hub is used to talked to various tapo devices but not all
Essentially those that need a battery.
What it does is talk to those battery operated devices. They do not use WiFi which would require a new battery every few weeks if not sooner
Instead it uses a lower frequency than wi fi that transmits through walls well and so will also use much less power
The hub then talks with Alexa but the Alexa integration is near zero other than asking Alexa to say tell you the temperature of the tapo thermometer
Any smart routines have to be set up within the tapo app – which is excellent
And talk to other tapo devices which are growing in number and I think tapo is going to survive and go places
They are cheap on Amazon and work well
Smart plugs because they have access to mains power connect directly to WiFi
They can be controlled through Alexa and/or within the tapo app
If you only have smart plugs or bulbs you do not need this hub
But if you have say a tapi thermometer then you do
I have mine set up within the tapo app to detect when the temperature drops below a certain temperature to activate a mains plug switch that a fan heater is plugged into
And to turn the the switch off when the heater then gets above a temperature
Within Alexa all you can do is ask it to tell you the temperature
You cannot currently set up routines within Alexa
In summary. I think Tapo devices will survive. The software is good. You only need the hub if talking to battery powered devices
And the reason for this is that you would need to replace the batteries every couple of weeks or even less if they connected to wi fi direc
