Absolutely great product. I fully endorse as a brilliant, versatile, clever, auto retractable, one handed, stair-gate. Really smart stuff the way it fits together and really neat looking and unobtrusive when fitted.
They are very robust and I have no issues if the dog jumps at them. I almost tried the mesh ones but reviews about them ripping easily put me off. VERY happy with these.
I needed x2 of these to keep my dachshund either upstairs or downstairs – depending where we were. All other gates we tried were either trip hazards or too painful or difficult to open & close.
You can see from the pictures that the openings/staircase are challenging due to the spindles – but these did the job, top and bottom, due to their versatility.
At the top – although the instructions don’t suggest it – I used the adaptability of one side fitted straight on – but the other using the sideway attach.
Dont be offput by the instructions – they are actually very simple.
My little ones are all older but had to buy a gate for my dog! To stop her going upstairs when we are out or at work. I didn’t want a chunky metal or wooden gate. This was easy to install it’s neat & tidy when folded. Stops my dog from going upstairs! Wish I’d had this when my children were small. My only one gripe is I wish it was a bright bright white. It’s slightly off white.
We needed another gate to stop our Rough Collie from going all over the house when she comes in from the garden when it is wet . we had a baby Dan when she was a puppy and found it worked well and also kept her in the kitchen when visitors come, as a lot of trade personal including plumbers what dogs kept away when they are working. we were going to get a different make but after looking came back to the Baby Dan as it had worked so well for us in the past, it is easy to fit ,also easy to operate and well made. it was seven years old and was starting to look tatty. The new one is just the same in all its features, so we were well pleased. The thing that was misleading was the colour ,as the one on the website looks like a cream, however that is just the website as they are still white. So ,if you are looking for a baby gate then look no further as these Gates are well made and will stand the test of time.
Used at bottom of stairs, had to fix wooden batons to wall either side first then gate fixings. Sits on bottom step & is very firm, no room for kids to step up onto step & can’t get over, neither can dogs!
We hav an edge to stairs so had to adapt to fit but works well. Can be awkward to click in but works 4:5 times. If not can hold bottom edge and hand hold to clip in. Is exactly what I was looking for & although ordered extension it wouldn’t fit so returned.
I wanted a gate that wouldn’t have the metal bar along the bottom to separate our livingrooom and kitchen for our dog and this one has been perfect. I have a 30+kg golden retriever who excitedly jumps onto the gate when visitors arrive and it hads held up very well! I was worried she would break it but it’s been months now with no issues.
This stair gate is very sturdy and super easy to open one handed. The design means that it folds in on itself when open and stays out of the way so you don’t have to worry about the gate swinging around or getting in the way. We now have 3 of these: upstairs, downstairs, and under the stairs with the optional extension kit. Not the cheapest but well worth the price!
Bought to stop little dog going upstairs. First few steps curve round so none of the straight gates worked. This is perfect and no step over to trip over and it fits tidily yo one side.
These gates are absolutely fab for dogs, I have 3 in the house, but they are not so good for children, as my grandson is only turned 3 and he can open them. Now, if they made a cover to go over the handle that might be a good idea
This looks so much neater than the standard metal gates and takes up no space when its open, so once the baby is in bed or down for a nap we don’t have to be opening and closing baby gates to get around the house. It retracts on it’s own as well which is useful. It’s not the easiest to click shut with one hand though, usually need two hands to do it.
Not a bad thing to say about this.
Product arrived, very simple, easy to read and follow instructions, and extremely easy to set up and install on our stairs.
Protects the upstairs from our wondering pup!
Have a 7 month old and this gate is perfect . Easy to use one handed and is a smooth close . Will be purchasing another for upstairs . Also, dont have to worry about tripping over the middle part of a metal gate , no stubbing your toes!
This is very solid and sturdy..I am so glad I bought it.
This works well and is less obstructive than other types.
The only downsides are that it looks a little cheap, is quite loud to use and is a little tricky to unlock. We like it and are keeping it anyway.
Tried everything to stop them going upstairs, this is the only thing that works may need a new carpet soon though
Good product easy to install. Looks good.
Bought to stop our puppy going upstairs but will also work with new grandson. Opening mechanism a bit fiddly to start with, but once you get used to it it’s ok
Got this to stop our dog constantly going up the stairs and this looked like one of the best stair gate solutions. The gap I was bridging was just over 89cm so I thought it might fit but it didn’t. It was just a little too short so I had to go out and get the extension pack. Luckily I managed to pick up the extension for 7 on offer so once I added that it fit perfectly. Once installed, it works great, it’s super easy to close and opens with the push of a button. I do think that they should include the extension kit as part of the main product as it’s already fairly expensive but that’s the only criticism.
The gate was easily fitted and is very effective if a little noisy when opening or closing
Other than that great produc
Have purchased 7 of these over the last few years but have actually installed them on 10 occasions due to my daughter moving house and removing/refitting. The first one I fitted took a little while to get the knack of adding/removing the fill in pieces depending on the door width. Really secure and not easy to open for a child no matter how smart they are. The only downside is that you need to drill holes into the wall/door frame and it is quite bulky when folded in the open position would definitely recommend even though they are not cheap!
I bought this stair gate as I thought it was much safer at the top of stairs because you don’t have anything to step over. Unfortunately because of our decorative bannister it wasn’t any good but we have fitted it to the kitchen & it’s pretty good. You do have to get used to the one hand opening mechanism, slide the button across then press to open, it’s really secure when closed. When not being used it folds back nicely against the wall. Pretty tough, bought for a doggy household but I imagine would be great to keep kids safe.
Purchased this to keep the dogs inside or outside the kitchen depending on what’s needed.
Was pretty straight forward to work out how to install and appears to be good quality, it is surviving two Jack Russells so So far.
Not been installed long enough to give a review of its durability but so far so good, I’d not be worried about ordering another one if I needed to block off another door.
I love this baby gate. Far easier to work and less noisy (which is important) than the standard metal baby gates. Wasn’t particularly easy to install for us because of our staircase I had to buy some wooden batons to fix on to the stairs then fix the gate to it. But that’s just because of the way our staircase is. I imagine for most it will be straight forward. If you have skirting boards be smart about your measurements and make sure you’re level from floor to bottom of the each of the sides of the gate.
The only gripe I have is that it’s more of a cream colour than white. Would have been better if the colour was true white
Nice idea for a product – fills a need between a traditional swinging gate and a retractable cloth gate, the latter of which isn’t often suitable for pets. This product is great for keeping the dog out of the lounge so the baby can sleep in peace.
Installation is a bit fiddly, but this is due to the flexibility of the product, in that it can be adapted to fit different size gaps. Ours was an edge case where we could have an extra bit slotted in to comfortably bridge the door but it would have been a bit ‘floppy’. We opted instead to go for one fewer meaning it’s tight and not always that easy to close with one hand, but looks better when it’s closed and doesn’t flop about when the puppy jumps up on it.
Opening the mechanism with one hand takes a bit of practice but on the plus side it means it’s not accidentally opened.
Overall pretty happy with this!
Got this to keep my ferrets out of the kitchen and it works perfectly. I have quit large fuzzballs but this can be lowered almost flush to the ground for even the smallest ferret for anyone else looking for a gate to keep their little doots out of rooms. It’s not always easy to push down to open (at least for me) so would keep most toddlers out of dangerous areas of the home, but I’m not too confident it would keep a larger, more determined tot hanging on it contained so wouldn’t recommend at the top of the stairs.
All in all, not a bad gate but could be a bit stronger as it’s intended for children.
I found the gate very useful as there is nothing to trip over once the gate has been pulled back. The gate can be installed forward or sideways facing.
Overall the build quality is quite plastic feeling. It is also not very easy to unlock with just one hand. Make sure when locking you hear the loud click which tells you it’s secured.
You do need an extra piece of wood to place above the skirting board if you want the gate to sit flush against the wall. It’s advisable to have a little DIY experience to install this. The manual isn’t that great but with a little time and patience you can figure it out!
Purchased three of these to replace previous metal bar safety gates.
We have house rabbits and use safety gates to stop them entering protected areas. With the metal bar gates small pets could either pass between or get their heads stuck between the bars so additional protection was required.
With these “BabyDan Gaurd Me” gates no additional protection is required and also those pesky eyes (can include toddlers) can’t see and be tempted by what is on the other side.
If you have and small pets (fancy rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, small kittens, ….. non jumping over 28 inches) then these will be ideal.
One small criticism is that the slide safety latch is not ideal for elderly people with weak fingers/hands and/or arthritis as it is quite difficult to pull back. Ideally requires a raised lip as opposed to a shallow depression for finger locating.
For our purposes (no children about) I just removed the lip that the slide latch has to be withdrawn past. You can then just push the button down which is still requires reasonable pressure so I’m not convinced that small children could actually depress the button. But there is always one!
When looking to purchase a stair gate it had to be a retractable one as I’m a disabled parent, so little lips/bars or steps were a massive no go. I accidently came across the BabyDan when looking for the roller retractable ones, and I’m so glad I did. Yes the price is a tad expensive, but, you 100%get what you pay for. Although it’s plastic, it seems incredibly strong and durable and adding/removing the sections is an absolute doddle and a brilliant idea. I’m 5 foot 10 inches, and the height of the button is just about high enough to not have to bend to press it, which is rather lucky as I can’t bend due to my disability. The instructions can seem a little confusing at the beginning, so we reverted to YouTube so we could get a clearer idea of how to install the gate. Once we had watched the video on installation and looked at the instructions again it was all relatively plain sailing and my partner managed to install it within 15 minutes.
I’ve seen a few reviews about people having difficulties with the two-step button, I can honestly say I have no idea why they found it so difficult. Ours worked perfectly first time and has since.
Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase so far and when the time comes I’ll be ordering a few more of these for other rooms in the flat!
Like many other reviews I purchased the BabyDan Guard Me gate not for a child but for a dog. We already have a more traditional style BabyDan gate at the bottom of the stairs which has worked brilliantly for the last year However we’ve recently opened up a second entrance from our kitchen into a new sunlounge which couldn’t have a door but still needed a method of keeping our pooch from wandering through when we’re out of the house. We didn’t want a gate that had the usual bar across the base that could be a trip hazard so looked at a retractable solution instead.
I looked at a few different styles on Amazon, coming very close to choosing one of fabric/netting construction, however other people’s reviews of dogs being able to push underneath didn’t fill me with confidence. My wife then spotted this Guard Me by
BabyDan and I ordered it on the spot as I have been pleased with the performance of our existing gate.
It arrives in a long but thin box, in which you’ll find a two fixing posts, all screws and spacers necessary, instructions (in English as well as several others) with clear diagrams, and the gate components. The gate will fit quite a range of opening widths so there’s a number of ways that you can put the gate together to give the correct sizing.
Measure between the points that you want the gate to fit, in my case the opening was 765mm between a timber frame. Refer to the instructions and it will tell you which page then to go to for that width and type of fitting. You can choose to fit the gate on the walls either side of your opening if you like as the fixing posts can articulate to be at a 90 degree angle to your door. You’ll be told which panels you need to fit together to provide the right width of gate. It looks a little confusing at first, perhaps because you may need to disassemble the gate provided before you start, but it soon comes together. There are four long screws on the hinge side to mount to your door frame or wall, and three smaller screws on the latch side. There are then two further screws to hang and adjust the gate into the hinged frame. The only tool you’ll definitely need is a Philips screwdriver, but a power screwdriver or drill will be much quicker if you have them. Installation took me a steady half hour.
The plastic that the gate is made from was a little surprising if I’m honest. It felt ever so slightly cheap, but then I suppose it needs to be a little on the lightweight side. That doesn’t detract from the product though. It has provided a solution to a problem and it works well. it’s quick and convenient, and can be operated with one hand. The gate opens with the slide and press of a button with your thumb. Very straightforward.
Overall, I’m very happy with the BabyDan Guard Me, and certainly recommend it for its versatility and easy of use.
Using this to stop our 10 month old getting up the stairs. I’ve got skirting on one side and spindles on the other so didn’t know what I was going to do for a stair gate but I knew I wanted a retractable one so when the baby is elsewhere we don’t need to keep contending with a gate.
So easy to use, just screw the two posts in and screw the panels to the post. I ended up adding another part of a panel to make it wide enough for my stairs and there is a little tool to help do this – really easy to slide in and out.
I ended up taking a bit out of the skirting board with a multitool and on the other side I’ve screwed it in at the bottom and I’m going to use cable ties at the top which I’ll thread through the screws holes (I’m actually using garden wire at the moment and it’s sturdy enough but want it a bit more tightly bound to the spindle). I was going to put a bit of wood above the skirting to make it level but didn’t have the wood – I’ll regret this when the baby’s grown up and there’s a hole in the skirting board!!
The pictorial instructions are a bit confusing as there are loads of different ways you could configure this gate but it’s so intutive I didn’t really need them. According to the manual there are ‘beautiful’ instructions online, although I have not seen them.
The mechanism to open it is a bit stiff and you need quite a bit of thumb-strength! My wife finds it a bit difficult to open so uses two hands.
I don’t normally write reviews like this but thought I would on this occasion because I was so impressed by how good it is – also on ‘lightning deal at 33.51 so couldn’t be better!
We needed a gate for our 1 year old for the top of the stairs and didn’t want to get a standard gate. Having seen friends with the BabyDan we thought it would be a perfect solution.
Having got it from Amazon and opened the box, upon taking it upstairs I realised that we couldn’t set it up all the way to the floor because we have skirting boards all along the stairs. We could have got some wood to allow us to mount it all the way down, but that would have meant painting the wood and more hassle so we decided to just mount it above the skirting boards.
Installation was simple enough, our walls are brick so we had to drill some holes and put in wall plugs which is a bit of a pain but not that bad. One side needs 4 plugs, the other 3 plugs. I used a 6mm drill/plugs and used the screws that came with the set
Good news is that our daughter still cant get under it so it works perfectly. The gate folds away to almost flat which means it’s really unobtrusive when not in use – just what we wanted. The gate comes with a number of inserts which allow you to extend it if needed. Our hall was pretty much exactly on the maximum cusp of width. As such it means that at 89cms, its impossible to close with only one hand as you need to stretch the bottom to extend it as well. I would probably suggest getting the extension pieces if your hall is close to the max.
Ultimately even having to fix with two hands we are happy that we went with this gate. I also like the fact its from Denmark to be honest, nice to buy something thats not from China for once!

When I opened the box and looked at the numerous pectoral instructions I panicked a bit. In addition our stairs were 92cm wide and this went up to 89cm. Easily fixed with a wooden rail screwed to the wall then fitted the gate to that. Works really well, takes a bit of getting used to and when using the included panels to make it wider you do have quite a bit sticking out when open. Still plenty of room to go through though.
It is tougher to fit that a retracting blind type, and is a little more in your face that them, having so said though you gain by not having it opening onto stairs or outwards. We had a retractable canvas type last time and it was good but often went funny and you’d spend an age sorting it. This one is plain and simple and works well. They should include some blanking grommets to cover the holes up on the catch side when not fitting on the outside.
All in all a good piece of kit with nit picky reservations.
Absolutely love this. We have a small entrance hall and we use this to separate our living room from the hall/stairs. It retracts back so can be easily stored away against the door frame and is so easy to extend and snap into place. Everyone who comes round comments on this and how good it looks. Much better than any of those bulky metal ones that take up so much space.
I’m not sure if this would be good at the top of stairs as it does move and quite flexible so not advised but a definite must to keep in play areas and keep them contained. I feel very safe with it closed and knowing my little one can’t open it easily as it’s a 2 way unlocking system, you have to ouch down quite firmly and pull a tab towards you, so not easy for toddlers to work it.
I’d also advise if you have pets too as when our front door is open our dog would try to get out, not anymore as we can lock this gate and keep our dog contained also. Great piece of mind and will definitely buy more of needed.
*EDIT* I bought another one and did not fail to deliver on quality and ease of installatio
The assembly of this product, or at least the instruction on it, are a little bit cryptic. I always appreciate images to explain a process but when theyre not supported with a clear description, it can become a little confusing. This is definitely one of those situations.
As far as the product itself goes, it’s decent but not perfect.
The extender panels don’t seem to fit perfectly flush with the existing ones, and they didn’t really seem to think about skirting boards. This product is fine if you’re just using it in or on a doorway, but if you actually plan to block access to a stairway that doesn’t have a door, there are zero provisions available for mounting to a wall with a skirting board. I solved this using some spacers I had lying around and some longer screws, but would probably opt for a pressure mounted solution if I was going to do it again.
Once installed it is easy to use, looks good and quite safe, especially as there isn’t any bar across the bottom to trip over, although the one I have at the bottom of the stairs has a bar and we never trip over it.
Where to begin on this… this baby gate should really come with a warning. And that is ‘can also keep incompetent adults from getting through too’.
I mean it certainly says everything it says it is and more to be honest! I’ve come home from an early night out with my husband, which doesn’t happen very often, to being told that the baby gate has broken. This baby gate has broken. That my mother in law text my husband she, brace yourself, ACTUALLY HAD TO WEE IN A BOWL BECAUSE SHE COULDN’T OPEN THE BABY GATE, to get through to go to the loo. Aside from the FFS and the WTF and the FML that this baby gate has caused, 1 in 3 people can probably open this gate (she was with her husband, who also couldn’t open the gate). Before this happens to you, please ensure thorough training on opening this baby gate is done before going on a night out to avoid such events happening to you.
Perhaps the purchase of a she wee may be required for emergencies.
Honestly can be used to keep more than just children safe, or at bey or on the other side…
First-class product from BabyDan.
One-handed operation and folds out of the way when not in use.
Instructions on how to alter the gate to fit different widths of door frame are somewhat confusing – also some of the detail in the diagrams is rather small and difficult to see.
Initially, I thought that I would have to fix some wood to the door frame in order to fit the gate where I wanted to (inside the recess of the sliding kitchen door) as the gate only opens from right to left due to the folding mechanism, however with a bit of fiddling, I managed to get it to fit where I wanted.
Now when the gate retracts, it occupies no more space than the original sliding door which protrudes slightly into the doorway (see photos).
Gate is surprisingly sturdy once fixed to block the door. Also very easy to both lock and retract one-handed.
I can wholly recommend this product (once you have got your head around those instructions). Is it really that much more expensive for manufacturers to include WRITTEN instructions for the country that they are selling in??
Ultimately, the gate ”does what it says on the tin” and so I can’t really mark it down from 5 stars because as an easy-to-use safety gate, it is brilliant.
The dog is now quite confused as he can’t see into the kitchen – but he’ll get used to it!
Hope this review helps.
This seemed like the ideal gate to put across doorway to the room in which the little one will be playing. I read the Which report, that rated it very highly in their tests. This is a a safety gate which folds back on itself in a concertina fashion, rather than a standard open-and-shut gate with bars, which can make it look like the cherub is in jail. Note, it is fixed into position by screws, so be prepared to make holes. All the screw are provided, though I actually used my own, as some were bit long, so would have gone through the frame and hit brick.
I found it easy to install the gate. I have a small gap at the bottom. Aligned one side and then using a spirit level ensured that the other side was at the same height. Screwed that side in, attached the appropriate part to the concertina section, popped it in place, screwed it together (there I used the ones provided) and voila, all ready to go in about 5-10 minutes. It is not fabulously robust against adult assaults however I am confident it is more than strong enough for our little one for some years yet.
The gate will fit a gap between 55cm and 89cm, and needs a flat surface to attach it to. An extension is available to buy separately which will increase the gate’s width to 113.5cm. If you are going to be putting it where there are skirting boards, you will either need to pack it above, to make it level, so install it over the skirting board or alternatively, if the skirts are not too high (as they never should be), put it in place above them.
The double lock means you slide the top, then push it down to open the latch and the concertina section springs away. It is an effective way of preventing little ones from opening the gate, though it means for those with weaker wrists / hands / thumbs, it could be tricky. Closing however is a doddle, just pull the gate in to place and it locks in to the opposite side easily.
This gate’s wipe-clean surface is easy to keep clean and the non-pinch hinges help stop fingers from getting caught.
The things we like most are:
1) It folds almost completely out of the way when open.
2) There is no trip hazard, as with all the pressure fitting gates. Something we definitely do not want when carrying our most precious cargo.
2) It is wipe clean, for when our cherub inevitably decides to add something to its aesthetic.
3) It was easy to install.
4) It does not make it look like the little one is in jail.
5) It seems to be robust enough.
6) It does not get in the way, don’t need to step around it when it is opened.
7) It springs out of the way when released.
8) It is easy to close.
Things we don’t like as much:
1) The double action opening can be tough on weak thumbs
2) It will leave holes
3) It is more expensive than the fixed swing style gates.
On balance, the negatives are minimal when one considers why you have the gate in the first place. Holes can be filled easily, it isn’t so pricey as to be silly and it is a lot better than being hit by a swinging gate or tripping over the bar when carrying your baby.
Please give this review a like if you find it helpful, thank you for reading.
My opinion of this is divided, depending on where you are planning on using it.
I bought this to use on the stairs, because I didn’t like the idea of having a gate with a bar along the bottom (trip hazard), but on receiving and checking the instructions, realised it doesn’t come with any fixings for brickwork/plasterboard. In fact, if you’re not using in a door frame, they recommend you fix a wooden baton to the wall before screwing in the gate – something that isn’t clear from the product description or photos. I wasn’t particularly happy with that and have since decided to get a pressure-mounted gate for the bottom of the stairs and am using this in a door frame instead. For the price I was pretty disappointed by that.
The gate came mostly assembled, with additional sections that could be added if being used across a wide space. It was so easy to add new sections or remove them – the gate comes with a little clip that allows you to quickly slide out unnecessary sections, and additional sections just slide straight in and click once secure. The same clip is used to measure where to screw in the two sides – you rest the bottom of the side fixing on the clip, screw it in then slide the clip out and repeat for the other side. Then you just screw the centre part in, clip it into place and go. REALLY easy to fit, so long as you’re fitting it to a doorframe.
Once fitted, the gate can be opened and closed with one hand – easily, unlike some of the pressure-mounted gates I’ve tried. You use your thumb to pull out the white tab, the same thumb to push down the clip, then use the handle to open. It retracts automatically and folds up against the wall, so is great if you don’t need it all the time. I was considering an auto-close gate, but this is so much more convenient – when baby is in bed or in another room, I don’t have to faff opening the gate all the time.
It would be really handy to use in awkward spaces too, where you’re stuck with dodgy angles or wider-than-average openings, because you can practically close it around a corner thanks to the concertina-style gate.
I would NOT recommend this be used at the top of the stairs. Most HVs recommend against this anyway, because they prove more dangerous than beneficial, and recommend you use a gate on your child’s bedroom instead, but this could be even worse than a normal gate. Because of the concertina design, there is a risk of baby being able to push the gate out and slide underneath the gap. The instructions show that you should have the gate taught at the top of the stairs, but it is INCREDIBLY difficult to close when pulled taught as it gets very stiff. I struggled to close it with two hands, and ended up loosening it.
The instructions could be better – they try to be like IKEA instructions, without any words, but they also try to be concise which lead to me being a little confused about a few things. I figured it out in the end but the instructions could definitely be more cohesive.
I do think the gate deserves four stars despite my issues – it’s so different to anything else out there and the design is fantastic. So long as you’re using it in doorways it’s fabulous. I’d imagine it would be fine at the bottom of the stairs too, so long as you’re confident about drilling into your walls securely. I wouldn’t recommend this at the top of the stairs though, under any circumstances. If you need to use it to protect your child from falling down the stairs and don’t want it on their bedroom door for whatever reason, you would be MUCH better off installing it a little way away from the stairs, maybe across the landing instead.
Definitely worth the price, although I did get this on sale for about 27 – it’s just so much more convenient, attractive and versatile than other gates.
