A great watch,l was very pleasantly surprised with how it all went down. Its the first time that l have an automatic watch,a new toy to play with.,Thank you.Agreat buy.
Citizen Promaster – Been looking for a reasonably priced automatic watch for a while and this one came up on sale for 160 and i’m so glad i got it. Love the dark blue face and black bezel. Its a bit smaller than i thought it would be which is good as i don’t like bulky watches. Build quality is excellent, hasn’t lost any time since i got it. Seen some negative comments about the strap but to be honest i don’t mind it; for the money its fine and looks ok. I’ve ordered some nato straps anyway as i prefer them – for a tenner a strap it transforms the look of the watch. Bezel movement is firm and requires effort to turn, again this is good i don’t want it turning every time my sleeve catches it or i knock it; i don’t sit there spinning it like a fidget toy and if i need to measure time i’m confident it wont move. Overall i love the look of it, the crown at the 8 position is a nice feature too, more comfortable and you don’t catch it on your wrist. Lume is good as far as i’m concerned ive had no issue reading the time in any light. Automatic movement is also great; nice and quiet and hasn’t stopped or lost time since i got it. Overall this is a great watch that looks the part and doesn’t break the bank. Even at over 230 i’d still consider it.
Rugged looks and still keeps good time after 14 years of ownership.
Purchased this watch back in 2009 from a jewellers and its never given me a moments bother.
Bright lume, and a reassuring click to the bezel this watch looks good with a tshirt or dress shirt.
I upgraded the strap to a silicone zuludiver but other than that it’s a good looking diver for just about any situation that should give you years of faithful service.
My first ever Citizen watch and what a beauty it is, I wanted a reasonably priced Automatic watch, I was looking to buy a Seiko, but wanted to buy from Amazon themselves not a third party, but could not see anything I really liked from Amazon’s lineup, then someone suggested I check out this Citizen Prodiver watch, and im very glad I did its a beautiful watch, plus it comes with a six year warrenty, well happy once I changed the strap for a Nato type.
I saw this watch reviewed and had no intention of buying until I looked on Amazon and saw the Navy sunburst dial version. Then I pulled the trigger. The why is because I only own Citizen eco drives not those with Miyota movements. This has a mechanical Miyota movement. It’s automatic and keeps very accurate time. I just loved the design compared to the Seiko SKX which has been discontinued and the fact that the Italian forces had used it was a clincher. I thought that I might suffer from buyer’s remorse because it’s rise from zero to hero was so fast, but I still love the watch. It has its fans, it’s price and build quality remain stable, whilst the SKX skyrockets due to alleged “rarity” and scarcity. Rubbish. Get one of these and don’t get ripped off.
I have a few watches in my collection but no automatics. Mine are all quartz, I have three ‘God Tier’ Casio watches one of those is a G Shock, and I have a Timex Expedition that is pretty bulletproof.
For my birthday a few months ago I wanted to buy myself my first automatic dive watch. I looked at Citizen, Seiko and Orient I really like all three brands but couldn’t workout what I wanted. I don’t have a huge amount of disposable income so wanted something really nice.
I kept coming back to the Citizen Promaster, because I really liked the look of the bezel grip and the crown at the eight.
I looked at the NY0086-16LE which is the Pepsi bezel and the NY0040-09W which is the yellow lume face. Sadly at the time on Amazon there were none of these available, then I saw the NY0040-17LE and I discovered I could do instalments on the payments. So, I decided that’s the one.
When I opened the box and looked at the metallic dark blue dial, I was really happy with my choice, it is a really lovely watch. The blue rubber strap also was a factor in my choice and loved that too. Unfortunately, my eczema reacted to the rubber strap after a couple of weeks, but that’s not a huge problem as all my watches are on Nato straps anyway and I have loads in the draw so swapped out for a grey Nato and it looked really good. Then I looked at what straps work with the watch and nearly all the colours I have work, at the moment I have an army green strap and it looks fantastic with the blue face and yellow lumes.
I have one gripe with this watch which isn’t a deal breaker but is just a bit annoying is the day-date window. Its white text on a black background which makes it a bit hard to read. I have a Casio MTD-1079D-1AVEF that I love and it has a black on white day-date window so
I am really pleased with my watch. This looks great, is comfortable the accuracy is very good too. Plus, I get a lot of compliments about it. When I had it on the Bond black and grey strap people really noticed it.
The Citizen Men’s Analogue Automatic Watch offers style, accuracy and superb value for the price that I paid off the Amazon Warehouse Deals. In fact the only thing that I can fault it on, and I knew this when I purchased it, is the plastic strap which I swapped for a Nato style tan leather one as suggested by another reviewer. Overall this is a quality watch that looks good and keeps time extremely well. I’m very, very pleased with my purchase and therefore have no hesitation in recommending it to others.
a great watch – I have an omega divers watch which is too bulky and as I find a right side of dial crown really causes me wrist issues when the crown inevitably digs in, the left side crown on this watch works brilliantly. The build quality is great and timekeeping is fine. and its a real watch with an excellent automatic movement. I really don’t need to track my day to the microsecond and have other digital watches for those needs. The strap is fine too. I have small wrists and this is subtle in terms of size for a real diver’s watch. recommended.
OK, to be short, this is a proper automatic watch with a very nice finishing, amazing classic look and very good overall quality for the price.
Mine is quite precise and accuracy is usually around less than 5s per day, at this price range it is really difficult to find anything better.
The bezel is perfectly aligned. The dial has a really wonderful colour. The lumen is not amazing but quite decent.
The only downside to me is the blue strap, I think it steals the colour in the dial, and that’s why I changed it to a black one.
One cannot go wrong with this watch. I just like it more each day!
I have been coming back to look at this watch on Amazon time and time again for the best part of a year and now as it’s coming up to Christmas I thought I would treat myself and take the plunge! (No diving watch pun intended)
I’ve had this watch just over a week now and during that time it has not missed a beat. Since taking it out of the box and setting up the date and time, I’ve not had to ‘hack’ the hands once – this thing really does keep time remarkably well. I’ve read online that the later iterations of the NY0040 model have an upgraded hand movement so this is probably to thank for that. The hands themselves are chunky and purposeful and they sit perfectly against the bold hour markers on the face. I recently learnt that the NY0040 has been used by the Italian Military for a number of years and found that to be a really interesting piece of trivia and also a solid endorsement.
The watch is slightly smaller than I expected but this suits my smaller wrists really well and if anything just makes it easier to fit under jacket sleeves and coats. The lug width is on the smaller side at 20mm but it just makes the face the focal point and it totally works. I’ve paired mine with a brown leather strap (as inspired by Tommy’s review further up the page – thanks Tommy!) and it really does the business. The brown compliments the blue face perfectly and really makes the detail pop. I will often sit and stare at the face and get lost in the bluey hue. This is definitely a looker!
The watch is light and comfortable and that alternate crown position (to the left hand side) really does make sense when you’re constantly moving around and using your hands as I often do. The crown itself is quite chunky but just be careful to thread it properly to avoid a compromised seal. Easy to operate and easy to live with, I haven’t had any comfort issues since it’s been on my wrist and I can’t see it becoming an issue at any point. What’s more, the belly has a lovely radial edge to it so that there are no sharp edges against your skin.
There are one or two minor niggles which should be mentioned however, but these are only minor and to be expected from a watch at this price point. Firstly, the combination of free running bezel rotation and deeply scalloped bezel grip means that you can knock the bezel out of alignment with 12 o’clock fairly easily. If you catch the bezel on a hard edge or corner then it can shift the bezel round almost a quarter turn. The bezel clicks, operation and alignment are all spot on though and I think I can probably let this slide – perhaps I’m just not used to it yet. Secondly, the lume is a little disappointing. While impressive at the first sign of darkness, the lume does not seem to last very long and I’m not sure it even performs as well as my Orient Ray II. Even after a full day of sunlight exposure the lume’s effectiveness reduces significantly within 5-10 minutes of darkness.
Again these are minor flaws but important to note I think. For the positive aspects this watch has to offer and at this price point, overall this is still a great timepiece and I’m looking forward to the next few weeks as it establishes itself as my new daily beater.
Pros:
Timekeeping and hacking
Aesthetics and style
Comfort
Cons:
Bezel susceptible to knocks
Lume effectiveness
Overall a great looking timekeeper for under 200 quid
4/5
Amazing watch and amazing quality.. This is the enhanced watch with the new 8204 mechanism which is hackable (the second hand stops when you pull the crown out)
This watch is used by the Italian navy, so you can be assured its a good watch
It’s a great looking watch. The bezel is firm with no back play. The lume is bright and lasts a long time and it feels great. on the wrist. The strap is nice and supple and looks good with the watch. The Myota movement has the uni directional counter weight inside and it does make some noise when it whirring round. The odd thing is, it’s say it has the 8203 movement on the bottom of the dial but the case back says 8204. This movement has hacking so when you pull the crown out to adjust the time the second hand stops so you can synchronise properly. I’m not sure they all now come with this movement but I’m happy this one did. Excellent watch, very happy.
I like the adjustment know is on the left not right .I presume its to prevent it sticking in your wrist when you bend your hand back. The face could be a bit bigger and not impressed by the luminous hands. They don’t really illuminate or glow even when being exposed to light all day. It would be useless in dark mirky water. As divers watches go this is a poor example yes it can keep water out at depth yes it doesn’t need batteries and yes it has a screw down bezel. But with all that not a divers watch . It would be tought to see the face as its so small .little or no luminosity unless held to a bright light then it will only shine for about twenty minutes tops. And the strap is not long enough to go over a wet or dry suit. As a watch for gardening the reason I bought it ok but if your after a true divers watch you want to dive with look elsewhere this is not for you.
Comfortable watch to wear. Great for left handers with the crown being in the 8 position. Like the day and date complications & the dial glows bright after some sunlight.
Good value watch
I might still be in the honeymoon phase but I felt compelled to write about my experience with what must be the best value mechanical diving watch currently available. With its rival the Seiko SKX’s availability dropping and prices rising, the Citizen gives a comparable, sometimes superior experience for a very good price – it has a distinguished history having been adopted by the Italian Navy in the late 90’s. The movement has proved very stable and accurate, generally good fit and finish. There’s a little bezel play but not enough to quibble over — alignment is spot on. This one of these watches that looks so much better in person than in pictures. On the blue version, which I have, the dial is wonderful. It is a subtle blue/grey sunburst and I can find myself staring at it as I move my wrist to catch the light! I didn’t care for the rubber strap so have changed it out for a chocolate leather NATO which I think suits it down to the ground. With the blue of the dial being quite subtle you could pair this with any colour NATO. The lume is excellent and who can resist that ‘underpants’ 12 o’clock marker! In short, buy with confidence, it’s a phenomenal deal.
In almost every review of one of the most respected and reviewed watches in the world namely the Seiko SKX007, this Citizen NY0400 is mentioned as its closest competitor. I own the 007 and thought I’d pull the trigger on this one to see what the fuss was all about……after all nothing could beat the 007 could it? Well………what a nice surprise, in my humble opinion this Citizen is fantastic, it is more pleasing to the eye, it looks more sophisticated, the movement is better and more accurate and it just oozes class. If you are on the fence buy it, you will be able to sell it for more than you paid in a year or two, put it on a stainless steel bracelet and watch the transformation. I sold my Marathon Tsar after receiving this watch, its that good, and I pocketed about 400 plus got in my opinion a far far better made watch.
The Citizen NY0040-17LE is a classy auto diver, just ask the Italian Navy, better than the SKX.One very minor gripe, the instruction manual is written in German but who reads them anyway.Delivery was very fast, top marks.
I had to return the first watch as the bezel had too much play and wasn’t aligned properly. Chapter ring was misaligned too. Replacement watch had no issues. The watch itself looks great and runs +5 seconds/day which is not bad at all at this price point. The lume is bright and charges very quickly however, it disappears almost as quick which is disappointing. The blue starburst effect dial looks amazing in sunlight. Overall a great watch for the price which is much better now that I’ve removed the rubber strap and put it on a Bond style Nato. Cheaper than an SKX too which isn’t as well made in my opinion.
Amazing watch from Citizen. A true SKX competitor but without the quality control issues that plague seiko (misaligned chapter rings etc)
True military watch used by professional divers and tested to a depth of 500m despite 200 being on the dial.
Isolation certification and wears like a 38 or 40mm even though it’s not.
Get the blue version. They are discontinued so will be rare soon.
Love this watch! It cost a fraction of my Speedy Pro but this is getting more wear at the moment as my daily beater. Strap would be great if diving over neoprene but for day to day wear I couldn’t get on with it as my wrists are small so have swapped it out. Lume is mega. Runs about 20-30s a day fast which is impressive considering the whole thing is built by robots and has not been regulated. Love it!
I am at this moment in awe of this watch. It looks amazing so much that I am considering buying another one to mod up by placing a red & blue nato strap on it. I was also considering buying the SEIKO SKX007 but glad with this magnificent timepiece even on the blue resin strap. Great value for money as well.
This is a great watch, I have a black version that needs a clean now but after nearly 15 years I would expect that. Sadly it has been discontinued now so get one whilst you can.
Perfect classic design. Absolutely reliable, never have to worry about batteries and also a great diving and snorkeling watch. I love that it is always reliably a little fast – even though I know this it still keeps me from missing trains and buses, something that happened much more often when I had a quartz watch. Psychology in action… The only thing I would change would be to make the day/date display a little bigger.
