Always wanted a dji drone this one is fantastic easy to use and setup great controls with 3 modes takes great video and pictures best purchase I have made.
You need DJI account to fly, but after sorting it out it’s plug and play. Good picture and video quality. Perfect for professional work and personal use.
I am by no means a techno fundi but I found this drone easy to set up and fly. I am absolutely blown away at the quality of my photos recent around the Irish coast and the fact that the drone is so steady in gusts of wind. I have come to trust that when I press the return button, it will always come back to me, even when I cannot see it which is most of the time, Lol. I just love this drone and highly recommend it.
The 3 batteries supplied with the device last less than I expected, depending on usage and weather conditions. The performance of the battery limits the possibility of shooting over long distances.
Very nice product for beginners who like to have some fun .
Perfect size to take with you in a holidays.
Camera resolution it’s nice but you need some practice to know how to operate it.
Good luck
I recommend 90%
Remember beginners this drone have NO SENSORS.
Very easy to fly. Stays very steady in the wind (not too much wind of course). Very well made and the flymore kit contains all the batteries you should need for a days flying.
Put together in a few mins and most times it does not need to be compass calibrated i.e. no twisting round etc. The camera is excellent but do be careful of the gimbel it’s not that robust. I have quite a few drones and this one is one of the easiest to fly. If you are worried about hitting things get the Mini III. But for most folk, especailly with the mixed signals from the CAA, this is probably the best value for money.
Great wee gadget, very light, very easy to control.
If you have a Samsung phone, download the app from the dji website, just type into Google download dji app, this and then when u go into it click on dji fly, this way it works properly don’t know why but it does, I watched a lot of YouTube vids about it all before purchasing
If you are wondering what licence to get with this one for the UK, its the Operator ID.
Make sure you don’t go near trees, also when flying look at the screen more than the drone due to easier to fly, when landing just make sure u can see the drone coming down cause the landing is about 1 meter within the take off.
What a great drone. If you’ve had drones before or thinking of getting into them, then this is the drone for you. So easy to fly great camara so many good things. Around 500 with a couple of extra batteries this is a top quality drone at a very low price, and no catches. Buy one and have some fun. I could say so much more but you only have to go on line to see so many great reviews.
For the past couple of years I had wanted a drone, but couldn’t justify it, and didn’t know if I’d use it.
Before Christmas I’d bought myself a treadmill hoping to get fit. When it was faulty, and I couldn’t get a replacement, I decided to use the money on getting a drone, and I don’t regret it one bit.
I was nervous for my first flight, but took it to a football field, and within minutes, I was flying over the sea filming the coastline.
The quality is pretty impressive. I like photography so I had bought some filters for the camera, which seem to bring out some of the footage more.
I’m well impressed and only flown it for a short time in comparison to most. I highly recommend this drone!
as a pro-commercial drone UAS pilot, operating 2 larger DJI drones (the Matrice 210 and the Mavic 2) I needed a smaller drone to undertake reduced distance inspections but also as a take anywhere drone quad copter. If you reading this you will know DJI are the industry experts and you will know why they are the best, this flymore Como with 3 batteries has been a brilliant addition my drone and UAS options, I would not hesitate to recommend any DJI UAS product. the video and camera options are results are breathtaking, the 4k video revolution as detailed is TV broadcast quality, and put on out home TV its looks superb. you get around 30 mins per battery, there are 3 batteries in this combo. As said I have a lot of dji products, and also cameras, Z30 and Xt2 thermal… never had any issue with DJI, syncs great with apple products and also android/windows. This combo is great for a beginne
This is my first real drone that I have owned and I am very impressed. Flying is a dream, so easy and safe, if you’re careful. The camera is amazing, its incredible how stable the image is while moving. The only time I’ve seen it jerk is traveling full speed forward in sport mode, but I don’t use that mode for filming anyway.
I got 2 years care refresh from the DJI website for 69 which I think is well worth it. That covers 3 replacements if crashed and recovered for a fee of around 45 and 2 replacements if your drone just flies away, but I think the fee is 200 for that, but still, gives a bit of peace of mind when flying.
I bought this for making videos and I’m over the moon at how it performs, and in such a tiny package! Super impressed, would recommend 100%
I was looking to buy my first drone for a bit of fun leisure flying it and also having a go at doing some video and camers work from a different view point to complement my photography hobby. I researched the DJI Mini 2 out on the web and having read up and watched loads of reports and YouTube videos on the Mavic mini 2 drone and I decided it looked to be perfect for everything I was looking for.
Next day delivery of the Mini 2 and I was totally blown away by this device. It turned out that this little drone is way beyond anything I could have wished for in both its quality, features and capabilities and how porfessional it is. it basically flys itself and its just so easy to operate and unlike what I imagined a toy drone would be like, this Mini 2 has all the bult in safety features to make flying it so easy. its really unbelievable in what it can do, it really is so clever and basically fail safe to fly and the 4K video and camera photos from it are amazing. I’m so pleased I paid the extra for the Fly More Kit though as its well worth it for the extra batteries, charging unit extra props and case etc.
I’m so pleased with this purchase and will be having many, many hours of fun with this product. As with any responsible drone pilot, you do have to get the nessessary requirements with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to fly legally and get an official Operators ID. This is easily done online for a 9 registration fee and only takes a couple of minutes on line to register your device and get your Operator ID mailed straight back to you so that you can flying legally.
On the CAA website there is also optional free online test to get a Flyers ID and although this is not needed for a sub 250g drone, its basically a 40 question online test in which you need to get at least 30 correct to pass. Everything you need to pass is there to read before or even at the same time as doing the test, you just have to select the correct choice answer, its certainly not hard and the answers are basically common sense. it is well worth the effort as it also lets you better understand ‘The Drone Code’ and be able to fly resonsibly so I am now fully registered to fly it through the CAA and cant wait to take to the skys 🙂
It was available a little cheaper elsewhere on line but I have always trusted Amazon and had there been any issues its reasuring to have Amazon support there to resolve any concerns without any hassle.
Thank you Amazon.
I had bought this early Jan to fly over my new build and capture stages. My little girl asked to have a go and crashed it in the scaffolding I started it back up to see if it worked and it flew off. I couldn’t control it and it eventually crashed. Find my drone isn’t accurate however I don’t think it’s that far out it’s current location.. flash and beep won’t work as it says it isn’t connected . New replacement is on its way as I couldn’t fault it.
I was impressed with its build quality and the control of it was simple. I need to look further into the settings to limit its distance or even look more into the gps distance proximity of said find my drone location I think this is priority as it can fly away and not come back under its controls
Overall would recommend but need to get to grips more with its settings
Consistently amazed by what this little thing can do.
Pros: reasonably robust – I had a few crashes which were mostly my fault – flying indoors and panicking near a tree but have only needed to replace props so far.
Picture quality is great
Performance in wind is really incredible given it’s size
Auto return to home when you lose signal seems rock solid and inspires confidence.
Cons: the furthest range I’ve managed without loss of signal is about 3k meters at 120meters but found this quite variable with sources of interference and buildings in vicinity of transmitter. 3k plenty for most use cases though!
After lots of research, decided on the DJI mini for my husband for Christmas. Oh my goodness! You will not be disappointed. My husband has been blown away with the quality of this product. He is still getting to grips with it but so far he is absolutely delighted with what this little machine can do! It does everything he wants it to and much much more. Picture quality is incredible as is the stability. He has begun filming, there is so much support and advice on line. He has since taken out the insurance on it, which is worth it considering what you would lose if it broke or you lost it. Definitely recommend.
Excellent Drone. Easy to control. Went far beyond my expectations. And to the reviews that say you are forced to but the care package before you can use the drone – just use your phones back button, or press the little x at the top to continue without the care package.
Another thing, also to the reviews regarding safety features it’s packed with safety features, the only thing it doesn’t have is collision avoidance. Just ensure you set your return home altitude higher than anything around you, and no chance of collision. If it loses signal or battery runs low, it will automatically return to the point from where it took off before it gets to the point of no return! Or a click of a button initialises this too. So long as your rth altitude is set high, it won’t collide with anything!
Highly recommend this drone if you’re looking for a compact drone, easy as pie to control, excellent camera and excellent features.
If there was a way to rotate the gimbal to shoot portrait, this would be the perfect drone. Making use of the wide angle for leading lines (think rivers leading to mountains in the distance) in portrait would be a game changer. I know you can on other drones but they’re more expensive and have drone restrictions.
Since you can’t do that, here’s what I like:
– Given it’s a smaller sense, camera quality is actually really good and pretty sharp
– Dynamic range is a little limited but the HDR function takes care of that in most situations
– Very stable, even in winds, given how small it is
– The controller charges your phone at the same time
For the price and ease of use, can’t really complain!
The Mini 2 is everything I hoped for and more. However, Amazon are a disgrace. I am a Prime member, who chose the amazon Prime delivery day to receiver this item due to work commitments and the necessity to quote a one-time password to the driver.
Having waited in all day Amazon failed to deliver. I then contacted Customer Services and almost had to beg to have the parcel delivered on the following day, the only other day I would be available to take receipt.
After an hour of grovelling to a Customer Services Assistant I managed to persuade her that I needed the parcel delivered the following day.
I live on the second floor of an apartment complex and when the parcel turned up I was contacted via the internal intercom system by the driver who stated “I ‘ave a parcel but I need the code” I furnished him with the code to which he replied “It’s outside the lift” I asked if he could bring it up to which he replied “I’m not coming up man, sorry man”.
He then left 550 quids worth of merchandise in a public thorough-fair which has been known for items to go missing.
I’ve ordered many things from Amazon, all without fanfare but on this occasion Amazon were a disgrace and fell well short of the high levels of service it seems to pride itself on.
I will not risk ordering high-value items from this organisation in the future and I suggest you also think twice about it. Disappointed.
This is my first DJI drone, and I was expecting it to be very good — I wasn’t disappointed. The drone has performed flawlessly everywhere I’ve taken it, and the small size along with the compact case makes it easy to transport. The camera is extremely stable. I’m very glad I got the Fly More Combo.
Two of the three batteries in my package needed the firmware update that corrects a discharge issue, but the update installed quickly, even while out in the field. In case you were unaware, LiPo batteries need to be discharged to the storage level after a week or so, and these smart batteries do this automatically. But the previous version of the battery firmware wouldn’t self-discharge if stored in the bank charger or the drone itself. This firmware update corrects that issue. I expect that all the batteries in the supply chain will be updated soon.
This is a brilliant drone full stop I lost my last drone a ZLL SG906 MAX at arnside Cumbria lost connection and RTH failed so upgraded to mini 2…im not a pedantic critic after all it was a cheaper first outdoor drone but the mini 2 is amazing the picture quality is a big step up the agility is unbelievable it turns on a sixpence the lock between controller and drone is rock solid and it’s behavior when given commands are both instant and intuitive I fly for fun and the footage is a bonus I’m not critical of its camera I know the bigger DJI drones have better camera…oh boy can this drone shift in the air it’s fun personified indeed the stored flight data is amazing all the telemetry recorded I’ve got care refresh toothe app is easy to use and full screen footage is seen…I’ve bought a hard case for it so if at beach will use that… love it’s power in the air despite its small structure I mean it’s fast 16mps my last one was 12…and turned awkwardly this one well it just corners in a second… dont think I will upgrade to the bigger DJI as they more limited due to weight where u can fly them but at 249g the mini has the most scope and freed to fly in short BUY i
I’ve never owned anything like this before and I’ve been blown away by how advanced this thing is! I’ve had “toys” in the past but this is in another league, and to be fair for the price I expected that. It very much lives up to the price tag however. It’s so easy to fly and holds station very well, even in pretty windy conditions. The stablization is fantastic and delivers very steady footage. Everyone I’ve bored with my initial test videos has made the same comment about how smooth it is. Video and picture quality is amazing, and the flight time is really impressive. All in all I couldn’t be happier so far… I just need the time to get out and use it a bit more than I’ve been able to thus far.
I use a Mavic 2 Pro at work and really wanted something to fly and take photos when I was at home too, I can’t afford a Mavic 2 Pro so the Mini 2 was the logical cheaper choice.
There’s another very important reason I chose this drone: its weight. At under 250g it’s light enough that you can pretty much fly it anywhere, including over people! (Not crowds though.)
As long as you’re sensible and consider where you’re flying you don’t need to stay more than 150m away from congested areas, check an app like Drone Assist to make sure you’re not flying in restricted areas.
It handles like a dream, it can still function in quite high winds and it’s really easy to carry and deploy.
From getting out the drone to getting it in the sky is around 2 minutes as long as you have enough satellites.
The images and video are REALLY good. I would suggest taking some time to get used to the manual settings and play about to get the best out of your drone. I have bought some ND filters and whilst they DO help, they are not necessary. I quite often forget to put one on and the pictures I get are still great.
I am more than happy with my Mini 2.
If you are considering buying one you MUST get the “fly more” version. If you get just the standard version you will regret it as soon as that first battery runs out!
Battery life is around 20-25 minutes most of the time, it depends how far you fly, how strong the wind is etc.
Quick shots – programmable shots that circle a point of interest or fly straight up in the air etc. Fun ways of getting really good video footage that don’t need the dexterity of a Rubik’s cube champion to do.
If you’re on the fence about spending a few hundred quid on a cheaper competitor drone my advice would be to spend the extra and get this. Its superior in every way to the 150-200 “copies”.
The real main issue is the screen dimming on my Samsung galaxy Note 9 when in flight!! Various videos on YouTube regarding this issue!!
The quality of the drone itself feels like cheap plastic and not what I expected. Fine that it has to be light to be under 250g but not the best quality.
The controller on the other hand is solid and well made.
This drone is small and will fit in the palm of your hand. It is rock solid in a bit of wind and easy to fly!!
Don’t get the Fly more combo as its a waste of money. I ended up just putting the drone in a rucksack to take out as the bag is like a Handbag!! Fine if your female!!
You get a lot of flight time from 1 battery and I never used all 3 batteries in one go yet.
My advice is to buy the drone on its own and then buy an extra battery for 50 and save some money and you also won’t look like an idiot carrying that Handbag around!!
One other issue is why have DJI coloured this drone Grey?
I know a lot of companies do but it makes it difficult to see in the Sky.
I have a cheap drone that is Black and much easier to see at the same distance as the mini 2.
In fact a Lot easier to see!!
I use this primarily for weddings….It looks great getting those cinematic establishing shots and literally takes 2 minutes to set up and get in the air. I’ve not had major winds to deal with yet but in normal conditions (England) the stabilisation is perfect even when im 300 ft in the air.
The quality of picture/video is good! There is notable difference between this and the pro. However, for a grand less this is a great alternative especially for wedding videography who will only implement drone footage in….If you’re primarily doing gorgeous drone shot pieces then go for the pro.
It’s so easy to use, it’s under 250g, in the air within two minutes out the bag. the batteries can be used as a charger which is bloody cool (usb-c, usb ports).
Overall, this is a great little piece of kit. It feels quite robust for a small entry-level drone. Picture quality is excellent and the fly more extras, batteries are a brilliant addition.
However, there some things you should know…
The gimbal can be temperamental, as I discovered when a calibration warning persisted, resulting in me having to send it back under the DJIcare warranty. I consider myself a careful owner too. I would wholeheartedly recommend DJIcare after my experience. It was repaired and returned quickly and was updated every step of the way.
ND filters are a must for bright conditions, so prepare yourself for another purchase, and make sure they’re on properly. I’ve lost two already.
Using an iPhone with the controller is really terrible, especially in sunny conditions. The screen is simply not bright enough regardless of any third-party covers or hoods and it’s really hard to see what you’re capturing until post processing. Not ideal for a drone with no crash sensors. A black umbrella can help but it’s still not ideal, so find a shaded area if possible.
Make sure you keep the controller in visible range and pointed in the general direction of the drone during flight. Any buildings or obstacles can cause it to disconnect and that can be quite scary.
What can I say about this tiny drone, well the phrase “size does matter” doesn’t apply to this drone, I’ve previously had a few from the phantom range. And they had nothing on this little drone. The fact it’s so compact means it can be taken with you without the burden of a huge travel case/backpack.
For myself a wheelchair user it’s fantastic as fits on the back of my chair with no noticeable weight change to the chair, which is fantastic. With the added bonus of not needing a CAA licence to fly because it falls under the weight of 250g by 1g.
Great camera, which I’m looking forward to using more in the Summer. And if this is what we have in 2021 whats to come from DJI in the next few years. Keep up the great work DJI.
This wee drone is brilliant full 4k camera that records video as well. Its compact and very light weight and will travel a good distance without any connection issues. I am currently using one bought from a reputable dealer as amazon sold me an already registered to a different person drone. I did buy it from the Market place but because it was registered I was unable to use DJIs assist. For as little as 54 you get a 1 years crash replacement policy. Now giving its a drone that flys your going to crash at one point or another so this is a no brainer. Would you buy an electrical good that had no cover? Or perhaps a phone that was registered to a different person and you where unable to register to yourself rendering it usless if you wanted to make a claim against it. I would think not ehh. Well Amazon seem to think its perfectly fine to sell such a thing not only that but when you send it back they to take over a week to refund your money even though the tracked parcel arrived at their depot 2 days later. The flymore comes with 3 batteries and a controller abd a wee bag. But please buy from a reputable dealer and not amazon. You have been warned
Excellent, just excellent! I bought this little drone as the other DJI drones I have are quite large, so wanted something small and compact, yet robust with great camera quality. The mavic mini 2 is it! The footage I have captured with this little fella is epic. 4K crisp video and excellent photos, which are both JPEG and RAW for easy editing. The drone performs well in strong winds, the range is excellent and the flight time is superb. It’s quick aswell, so can zip about all over the place capturing those ad hoc moments. Would 100% recommend the mavic mini 2, epic little drone. I would also purchase some ND filters. I didn’t initially, but have now and the difference is night and day. Buttery smooth motion blur video.
I’ve owned a number of drones over the years ranging from DJI Phantoms to big drones such as the DJI Inspire 2. I bought the Mini 2 to replace my Mavic Pro as I wanted a smaller drone that can fit into other bags when travelling. The size of this thing is insane. It’s so small it fits into my RAB jacket pocket.
Image quality wise, don’t let the small size out you off! This think take lovely images, both stills and videos.
Only negative thing to say which is not an Amazon issue. Was that I was disappointed to not see any drone code leaflets in the box like I’ve seen with previous DJI models. I get the fact that it’s under 250g means it can be flown in more places. But the fact this could be someone’s first drone and there is no literature for them to read and understand the dos and donts was a bit disappointing. But hopefully new drone users will research this before they fly.
Overall very pleased with this tiny drone
Have been using this drone for over three months now. I and others (semi professional photographers) have been impressed with the results. I generally shoot 1080p and up to 60 fps – results are more than adequate for my needs, but 4K is a bonus. Note file size increases accordingly.
For such a tiny size the drones ability in wind is very impressive. You also have to go a long way or behind a hill to have issues with control signal. This drone will fly much further than you can follow it (which is a requirement by the way).
The big big bonus is given it’s small size 1) You can fly over uninvolved people 2) You don’t need a flyer ID (though worth doing the free test for awareness / info). You do need to register it and have an operator ID (GBP 9 per year).
Do go for the fly more combo – once you get going 1 battery is simply not enough.
I have just completed my UK A2 Certificate of Competence, and was looking for anotherf drone to supplement my Mavic Air 1. As C2 category craft are some way off market (if they are ever produced), there was no benefit in buying something that would be so restrictive to fly after 2022, so I looked at the Mini 2. This functions under the A1 category, so can be used for flights over “Uninvolved People”, making flght planning a cinch. I took the plunge and bought the Fly More Combo.
The first thing to say is that the DJI Go app that is needed for the Mini 2 does not work with all phones; certainly not with my Motorola E4+. There was no way to check compatibility ahead of trying to load the app (my MA1 uses DJI Go 4 which works with the E4+). I was about to return the drone to Amazon, as it was not fit for my purpose; paying 550 for a drone which cannot be flown without buying a new phone is hardly attractive.
However, my phone was out of contract, so I looked at a new one, settling on the OnePlus Nord 100, which Three assured me would work. I therefore got the new phone, and kept the drone. A raelly good choice.
The Mini 2 is fantastic, particularly with the Fly More Combo; it all comes in a small case that holds everything; much better thought-out than the MA1. At under 250 grammes, it is not only very portable, but gets into the vital A1 category, so isn’t, and won’t be, limited to the “Legacy” category in 2023. In particular, I can fly it legally from my back garden and over the village (after having cleared it with the control tower of my local RAF airfield; I’m just within the FRZ).
For the size, it flies brilliantly (so long as you do not try to fly when the wind is gusting over 22 knots, Force 5 – quite a breeze). It responds very well to controls, and the video quality is excellent, particularly in Cine mode.
I’m looking forward to taking it on my travels at home and abroad when lockdown finishes; it is so easy to pack in with my camera equipment.
My recommendation? If you’re in the UK, and want a drone that won’t become obsolete in 18 months get a Mini 2; you won’t be disappointed!
Bought this combo pack from Amazon UK in March 2021 & I’ve been delighted with it. The included DJI bag is invaluable for keeping it all together in a neat package & the three batteries in a charging box with a single USB-C port is invaluable – labelled them 1, 2 & 3 for easy rotation.
There is no collision avoidance, but it feels like most accidents come mainly from showing off – feels like a worthwhile trade to me to be under 250g & able to fly almost anywhere within reason.
Drone itself is easy to fly & stable in wind / gusts *below* 25mph & more than fast enough for a beginner. If you’re sensible & fly above trees & rooftops (but below 120M) it’s fairly easy to get good video results & I’ve had a lot of fun with it already, looking forward to getting out further afield.
Strongly recommend ‘UAV Forecast’ app for checking the weather today / tomorrow (free) or 7-days ahead (paid) – too many drones are lost / crashed when over-powered by gusts, or trying to return home back into the wind with a failing battery … I’ve learned my lesson the hard way already & was lucky to get away with it!
I’ve owned serveral drones before and they’ve been great but they’ve all been toys.
I decided to move to a DJI mini 2 for a few reasons and I’m glad I did.
It’s sub 250g so falls under all current and future legislation meaning you have more freedom
It has a 3 axis gimbal which I’ve learned is a must if you want to have stable video
It has a great quality 4k camera
There are a lot of improvements over the first mini and I’m sure anyone reading this will have done some research but having seen both fly I can say that the improvements are notable, especially in the wind where the more powerful motors come into their it own.
It also weighs less than the first mini. Not by much but mine came in at 239g so you can add small modifications onto the mini 2 without it going over the 249g such as the wrap shown in my picture which only weighs 4g leaving me 5g left to play with for a camera filter or small strobe.
I’ve only encountered 1 problem and hopefully this can help at least one person.
I flew my drone in some light wind. Well within the drones capabilities but there was wind. I pointed the camera straight down at 90 and the drone started to drift backwards. I tried to bring the drone back but couldn’t. I then raised the camera back up and the drone instantly stopped drifting.
I found out that this is due to a reduced power mode that the drone is placed into when the camera is pointing down. Its supposed to be to protect the gimbal but should disable in high winds. Mine did not and it almost cost me my drone. Be Mindful of this and you should be fine.
This is my first drone. So if you are looking for reviews from experienced owners then perhaps you should skip this one.
I was very nearly put off buying this model, largely because of other reviews telling nightmare stories of loss of control leading to loss of the aircraft. There are also reviews implying that even a light breeze can cause the drone to be lost. Since I wanted to use this to take stunning, swooping footage of coastal views in Cornwall (much like those shots that make up 60% of Rick Stein’s Cornwall TV series) I was particularly concerned about the wind thing, particularly over water. However I decided to do some of my own research when I realised that there must be a wealth of material on this subject on YouTube. And there is.
If you are in two minds as to the reliability and suitability of the Mini 2, and wonder what it’s like to operate one, I suggest you simply search for “DJI Mini 2” on YouTube. You’ll be surprised by the number of videos in form of tutorials and guidance that will result. You’ll have to be picky in which ones you watch because many of them are posted by inarticulate individuals with baseball caps on backwards, some of whom (particularly if they are West Coast Americans) are incomprehensible with their machine-gun delivery of sentences almost entirely devoid of consonants. But there is some good material there.
What I learned is that, contrary to some negative reviews, this drone is extremely reliable, and if set up correctly, will give you no cause for anxiety. There is even a video demonstrating this drone flying in a greater than 20mph cross wind, hovering and flying over the sea around a lighthouse. OK, it wasn’t rock steady in that wind but it didn’t fall out of the sky.
So I bought one and I am blown away by how good it is. I decided to blue the extra money on the Fly More Combo, and am very glad that I did. It gives you, inter alia, three batteries not one, and a storage protector like a little dog’s coat that holds the rotor blades in place against damage. With this, you can literally drop it into your pocket and not run the risk of damaging it. If you are going to buy one of these drones, you’ll need more than one battery. The official flying duration is 31 minutes, but that’s in ideal conditions indoors. In reality it’s around 20. The three-battery charger is almost a must unless you’re just using the drone in your back garden.
The design of the aircraft is very pleasing, with the legs folding away neatly, and with a built-in strobe light, that doubles as a status light for the various stages of power-up and self-test. It’s tiny! As you know, it weighs less than 250g (actually it’s 237g) and sits easily in the palm of an adult’s hand. Unfortunately it sounds like an angry wasp when it’s flying, but that’s unavoidable. It’s stable in flight and a doddle to fly. When you let go of the controls the craft stops where it is and hovers in place until it receives further control commands.
A particular concern that some negative reviews raised is that of loss of control resulting in loss of the aircraft. This drone, like the more expensive ones, is programmed to return to its launch point if it loses communication with the controller, or if its battery charge level drops too far. As part of your flight you need to give it the minimum safe height at which it can fly directly home (to avoid trees, power lines, etc) and it will simply climb to that height, return to the location at which it was launched and then gently land.
The picture quality from the camera is stunningly good, particularly bearing in mind the tiny lens and CCD chip it has. The gimbal (the rotating mount that allows you remotely to point the lens up or down once the drone is in flight) is accurate and steady even in a breeze. It’s not hard to obtain impressive footage from your flight (you control the camera from the mobile app on your phone or tablet) and you have complete control over colour balance, exposure value and (for video) pixel resolution and frame rate. The footage in good light at 1080p is more than enough for most people, but if you want cinematographic quality you can obtain 4K quality too (but the clips are going to be huge).
I have had enormous fun learning to fly this drone, and am greatly looking forward to using it in in picturesque locations, and from my friend’s cabin cruiser on the river, where all sorts of cinematography will be possible.
So, why only four stars? Well, this drone is missing two features, one of which is understandable but the other is not. The one that’s understandable is the lack of anti-collision sensors. These, on bigger drones, will automatically stop itself from flying into objects and is missing on the Mini 2 because it would probably increase the weight above the magic 249g. The other is less understandable, and that’s a ‘follow-me’ setting that instructs the drone to fly alongside – or above you – as you run or cycle, thus removing the necessity for someone to control it during that time. This is almost certainly a software feature, and I don’t understand why DJI haven’t provided it, unless it’s to encourage those who really want it to buy a much more expensive drone.
A note about the magic 250g weight limit. From January 2021 new legislation governing the operation of drones was introduced. You will need to register your drone with the Civil Aviation Authority with an Operator ID, which costs 9 pa. But the really important thing is that, since your drone weighs less than 250g, you are much less constrained about where you can fly it. So whereas the advice from experience owners has been “spend a bit more and get a better-featured aircraft”, now it’s “buy a DJI Mini 2 because you can fly it over people” (yes, if it’s heavier than 249g you can’t fly over people).
One piece of advice: DJI offer a sort of insurance and warranty product called Care Refresh. It costs 45 for the year and I recommend that you buy it. It covers you for loss of your drone (up to two replacements in a year) if it is lost as a result of technical failure. If you are unfortunate enough to fly it into a tree or a brick wall, I don’t think they’ll cover you for that. But this addresses any question of the danger of losing the drone because of loss of contact or control. To me it’s a no-brainer. If I’m ponying up 550 quid for the drone, 45 quid for peace of mind is very reasonable. But if you do do this, you have only 48 hours after activating the drone to opt for it. So sign up immediately you receive the drone.
My first ever drone, and wow it’s an excellent little thing! It’s amazing how it just sits in the sky and hovers, the signal is great and the Dji app feels so easy to navigate for a beginner. Being so light, with the new legislation coming in the Mini 2 has the most freedom being able to fly in the most place. I’m truly shocked how something so small can withstand wind and create amazing footage, so happy I went through and made the purchase. The fly more combo is a must have, those extra batteries are necessary, especially if you are like me and become addicted to flying, you’ll want the maximum flight time when the weather is finally good! Tekzone pulled through and next day delivery was achieved so i could get flying right away.
Before you buy perhaps take a look at Dji refresh or insurance to familiarise yourself with the options available.
Would have been 5 stars if “Active Track” had been included. However, I do also have a Mavic Pro which has this feature but this is a much heavier drone and so is subject to stricter regulations. The class that the Mini belongs to allows flights where there are people but not crowds and so would have enabled me to get low level tracking shots that would only otherwise be possible with very expensive SteadyCam equipment (Osmo Pocket not good enough unless able to perfect the ‘crab’ walk). So although disappointed at this I still think what it can do is incredible for such a tiny drone. So stable even in quite strong winds. Looks like a toy but is anything but! Even indoors with the low light warning on it is still very stable. DJI Please Please add ‘Active Track’.
The main thing to take into consideration is the new legislation regarding drones. The Mini 2 gives you so much more freedom for flying and, in that respect, it delivers, Wow! I know the Mavic Air 2 is highly rated overall by just about all reviews you’ll see but, there’s added restrictions involved, not to mention the added cost.
Obviously, it depends on your individual requirements and whether you intend to take the courses to qualify for more advanced flying and/or heavier drones.
Anyway, back to the Mini 2. It is definitely worth investing in the fly more combo. It provides you with all you need in the amateur/hobbyist sense. I couldn’t be more happy with this purchase, all things considered. The app. works with no problems at all (I have it installed on Galaxy S10 and the older S7 which I’m using as a dedicated monitor with the controller, that way I can keep the S10 free for checking NATS Drone Assist or Flight Radar 24 if need be).
The Mini 2 is a magical little machine. You can’t be disappointed with it, not at this price and with the results it gives you. Sure, it doesn’t have some of the features you might like to have i.e. all round sensors for collision avoidance but, it all comes back to The Drone Code and regulations which in my mind makes this a no-brainer as a choice.
Due to the current ongoing lockdown situation, I’ve only been able to fly from my back garden which I can do legally with this drone, following the D.C. of course. So far, I’ve just tried out 4K and 1080 res. and both are impressive, to say the least. There’s plenty of manual settings for iso etc. should the situation require adjustment. I’m so looking forward to be able to get out and about with this dream machine. The stability of the image from the gimbal is brilliant. I could go on and on.
I will post a short clip here once I purposefully film a short clip for including in a review like this. I only occasionally post reviews on Amazon but, after 3 weeks of ownership, I felt compelled to give the Mini 2 a shout out about.
This clip isn’t especially for the review itself as I haven’t done any aimed for adding to the review on here. It’s obviously not edited but, it does show off some of the quality you can get at this price/spec. bracket. This was the first time I had been out further afield to practice with it, last Sept. 2021. Needless to say, I wouldn’t look at anything else as an alternative in it’s class after a year of ownership. A ridiculously great drone!!
This is the best 570 I have spent. Why only 4 stars? They deliberately left out active tracking so there is a reason to buy mavic air. You might say it add weight and it might push it over 250 grams. But it can be done with a software tweak that would not have added any weight. Another thing missing is obstacle avoidance. But I’m sure if they added that it would be over 250 gram. In case you don’t know they try to keep it under 250 gram because in most countries the rules won’t be as strict. It’s still a amazing drone. It flies like a dream and very easy to get the hang of. The quality is top notch. If only it has active tracking it would have ticked all boxes and got a 5 stars from me
First off, there are people complaining about lack of collision sensors. If you are flying safely and professionally you don’t need them. I have been filming with the phantom 4 Pro for a couple of years and phantom 3 before that. I never needed the sensors. Quite often for various reasons I would turn them off before a flight. for example over water at low level where moving surfaces can cause issues or when flying through a close gap.
The mini 2 is designed to be under 250g for a reason, look up the new CAA drone categories for 2021 and you will soon realise why.
First flight out today with a moderate sea breeze. Nd filter fitted. Wow very impressive.
Footage is very nice. Very little noise in the image at base iso.
2x zoom is noisier but very very handy and a bit of denoise during the edit should help.
The mini 2 was very stable and no gimble issues even with the ND filter fitted.
Didn’t test the range for legal reasons but being small it’s hard to maintain VLOS at any real distance.
Secondly people complain about the lack of a real follow me mode. not an issue. Learn to fly and fly it yourself.
All in all a great drone. Not as good as phantom 4 Pro obviously but far more portable and further more will be amazing when the new drone categories come in in Jan 2021 All in all super impressive.
