It is my 2nd time in 3 years purchasing this strimmer.
It did well in light weed.
For anything a tad tougher, I had to advance slowly. Even then it was okay, but not great.
Being able to rotate the head for edging borders is superb (my main reason to purchase).
You cannot use this continuously for hours.
It will fail.
It not that well balanced for a small person to move around.
Cord length is generous
It this ever fails, I’ll buy a petrol
unit.
Pro’s and Cons
Cons, it’s a little heavy on the front and a little fidley to put together
Pro’s This things a beast grass, weeds etc don’t stand a chance it just destroys them infact it destroys everything it comes into contact with vegetation doesn’t stand a chance. I would say it’s defitnetly worth every penny I paid for i
Well made good value item.
Quite powerful
Quite heavy. Really need a shouder sling.
Assembly instructions poor
Could do with a lock for the trigger to stop aching fingers
Overall a good produc
It arrived well packaged and I assembled it OK, I found the guard a little awkward. It is heavier than the B&D strimmer it replaces, but it has a more powerful motor so I would assume that is why. In use it dealt with grass and nettles in short order. I found the edge wheel to work well, previously I edged the lawn using shears because the B&D strimmer didn’t do a good job but the guide wheel meant the cutting line followed the lawn edge.
Pretty good. Edging wheel v useful (& didn’t even buy it for that). Much better power than the cheap options.
Not given 5 stars, as the automatic feed on the line has never worked.
Works fine only used once so only time will tell if it’s a good product. Directions for putting strimmer together were useless I used the picture on the box and common sense, something the person writing the directions lacked.
Brought to replace my old one ,
must admit it feels so cheap and flimsy But it does the Job.. Or rather it Would but the supplied line is crab and so brittle breaking every 20 secs , ended up throwing it away and buying a spool of line from else where (which doesn’t break )
The trigger is awkward and hard to keep pressed in meaning that half way to doing a long sweep the trigger becomes depressed and the motor cuts out
Assembly easy enough but the length adjustment is too stiff to bother with
The wire shrub frame is pointless and just rotates
The balance even with the variable handle is all off, meaning the head instead of being level is pointed down adding to the trigger issues
The line feed is as expected with auto feed strimmers and be prepared to buy a new spool after each use
Apart from that it’s a powerful strimme
Looks so easy to assemble until you try and put the guard on. Tip you need to remove the spool before you try to put the guard on, remove the spool, the guard fits right into place.
I bought this one as it’s more powerful than the other models but im starting to think maybe its too powerful so be careful you people as if you don’t need the powerful one the get the next model dow
Solid build, but it’s quite heavy and the other thing with mine the power button on the handle has to be pressed very hard to stop the power cutting off, which can be a strain on the wris
Having been abroad for 6 weeks my garden lawn needed cutting and I decided to invest in the Flymo strimmer. Quick delivery via Prime, competitively priced and easy to assemble it did exactly as I expected and what I thought would be a time consuming jod was relatively quick thanks to the Flymo strimmer. I would certainly recommend it to family and friends.
I bought this as a replacement for the my old one. Only problem is I can’t pull the trigger up to work it, as I have arthritis in my hand, so my Husband has to do the edging on my lawns. He finds it more powerful than the old one and’s takes a bit of getting used to. Also it is quite a bit heavier.
To be honest it is not as easy to use regarding the trigger I didn’t have a problem with my old one. If I didn’t have arthritis it probably would be fine.
The assembly was simple apart from the Metal m connections between the motor unit and control. This was quite stiff to push in at one end. The unit itself is much quieter than the original Flymo strimmer that it has replaced. The cable storage assembly is good and easy to used and rotating the head release and lock is very quick and simple. The metal plant protection guard I found to be next to useless and I have removed it. The strimmer comes with a good length of cable and as I said it is easy to store and has a button release to ready it for use.
I should have read the reviews before purchasing the strimmer, I assumed that the it would have been very similar to handle as my old 500e Flymo strimmer, but that is not the case.
The trigger switch and the safety button on the top of the handle can only be held on for no more than a couple of minutes. After that my hand became too tired to continue holding the switches.(I am a 12stone fairly strong man), other than that the strimmer does a first class job of trimming and edging the Lawns. So can Flymo improve on the trigger switches in the future? otherwise I shall be taking my custom elsewhere!!
PRODUCT DOES WHAT IT SAYS,500W GIVES POWER,IT WONT CUT THROUGH THORN BUSHES
ITS EASY TO ASSEMBLE I PAID 42 BUT ITS GONE UP NOW.FOR CUTTING DOWN ON THORN
BUSHES OR ANYTHING THICKER BUY A HOE.IF LIKE MY BROTHERS GARDEN IF YOU LET IT GO,
AND IT TURNS INTO A FOREST,YOU NEED TO BUY THE TOOLS TO DEFOREST YOUR GARDEN.
Excellent fast delivery. Have used a battery strimmer in recent years which although less powerful did a good job. The Flymo is very powerful and can easily cause a mess with accidental scalping of lawn and edging. A lot is down to getting used to the more aggressive cut it produces, but more care is required. It does work well however.
With all the rain we have had recently the grass was too long for just the mower, so I read a few reviews of various products and went for this one. It’s powerful and very easy to put together. It was a little heavier than I expected, so had to have a little break half way through. It did the job and meant I could mow the lawn after without breaking it!
If like me you haven’t a clue about any sort of strimmer, buy this.
It’s sturdy, easy to assemble and has an auto feed so that you don’t have to worry about stopping to bring the wires out to keep strimming the grass!
It’s great value for money and really handy for those hard to get places under the tress!
2 things however I would say, it’s may be heavy for some, and the button you hold to keep it running does get strenuous sometimes so be aware as I had to stop a few times however its down to the safety feature which is great!
The strimmer arrived in a very small box, so was obviously going to need putting together. Following instructions you really can’t go wrong. I used this to take lawn length down as building works meant it had grown to nearly a foot. It is powerfull. Much more so than I expected. It tackled a small lawn and edges with ease. Flipping the motor on its side allows you to edge the lawn. Only issue was I wasn’t sure where it would actually strim. It actually cut a new edge where I went off line. It did all this without any break in the double line. Having read other comments I was fully expecting it to break, but no. Great bit if kit easily suited to small and medium size gardens and I would say even larger if you have stamina – it’s not the lightest of machines. Probably overpowered for my needs but big is better?
It’s a fairly heavy tool but has a powerful motor, twin lines and is almost silent when running. The wheel was very stiff so I had to put some grease on it which made it run much smoother. I brought this mainly for the grass edge trimming function (the wheel) but didn’t appreciate that it’s really meant for grass/flower boarder edging where there’s a overhang. My lawn is flush with paving so the line kept breaking and then you have to stop an re thread it all – faff! Now I trim the line shorter before I start and that seems to help a lot. It takes a bit of getting used to to gauge where it’s going to cut but I think that will come with practice.
I have “upgraded” from the Contour 500XT which was brilliant to the Contour 500E which is okay.
The 500E strims fine and is easy to use.
What I don’t like is the cable storage facility which only allows the cable to be wrapped around by the handle. The foot pedal can be used but the cable slides off easily. I have to carry the strimmer some way to my grass and it’s a nuisance when the cable unravels! It never did with the 500XT.
The two button release is too flimsy. Again I preferred the one button where you just squeeze the handle. As soon as the handle is released you lose the momentum trying to find the button. I know this is a safety feature but not well designed in my opinion.
I have always used Flymo products and this is the first time I have felt any disappointment.
Spoke with Flymo who confirmed there is a fault and have authorisation to return i
I have for several years been using a battery powered Bosch strimmer but wanted a more powerful mains powered strimmer with no worry of battery going flat halfway through the job. I have owned a lightweight flymo strimmer before which was mains powered but it used to struggle on heavy weeds and grass. The 500e strimmer purchased went together fairly easily. I watched the flymo’s video on flymo web site which also helped.
I had a little problem fitting the main shaft into the upper handle and lower motor housing, it seemed very tight but eventually went together.
The day after putting it together I put it to the test on a long stretch of grass and weeds which I have at the front of my house about 25 metres in all. The flymo did a great job. I did however have to stop several times as I found the flymo on off trigger difficult to keep a grip on for prolonged periods. Also this strimmer is heavy, much heavier than I thought it would be. Overall I am happy with it but think for some it would prove too heavy if using for long periods. In my opinion if flymo had made the handle easier to grip and made the on off switch a one finger trigger type switch I would have given it five stars. Overall a very good piece of garden equipment which hopefully will last for years.
My 18 year-old Flymo grass trimmer recently gave up the ghost. The plastic joint on the shaft had snapped and whilst the motor was running as well as ever, it was rendered unusable. I did my usual research and decided upon this particular 300W version as a like-for-like replacement.
The main selling point for me was its lawn edging ability and in particular, the design of the edging wheel. Many trimmers seem to have only one or two small rollers which I though may not last the test of time whereas this one has a large central wheel – much sturdier and more practical looking. It’s performance on paper is slightly higher than my old one with 50 extra watts of power and a 2cm larger cutting diameter. It doesn’t seem like much of a difference but in practice, is very noticeable.
If I had reviewed this strimmer immediately after using it for the first time, I’d have said it was horrible and wouldn’t have recommended it. It was a bit of a faff to build (mainly because I found the instructions to be poor due to the lack of text) and I ended up just looking at the photo of the trimmer on the box to see what it should look like once assembled. It’s a wee bit heavier than my old trimmer – probably because its bigger but is still pretty light. However, the shaft flexes at the plastic joint and this means that it wobbles about a bit when you’re using the trimmer to cut tall grass. I’m not entirely convinced of its longevity but we’ll see.
The main issue I had when I first used it was that when used as an edger, you have to strim from right to left. With my old one, I did the edges from left to right so found it quite difficult to control and had to work out an entirely new route around the garden instead of the one I’d followed for 18 years. This meant that some plant leaves met with an untimely end and the lawn edges looked ‘less than linear’ (a mess!) in some places. With my old trimmer, you only had to flip the entire thing over to swap between edging and long grass trimming but with this, you have to push a button and flip only the trimmer head over; a case of slightly pointless ‘progress.’ However, with an open mind, I thought that I’d gradually get used to this new approach and I certainly have. I’m 5ft 10in and find that the overall length of the trimmer is just fine and I don’t have to stoop at all, especially when using it as an edger as most of the weight is over the large wheel.
I mentioned the slight step up in specification compared to my old Flymo trimmer. The extra 50 watts makes this trimmer feel significantly more powerful than my old one to the degree that wearing PPE is a must. Even a stray bit of strimmer line pinging off can feel like you’ve been shot with a BB gun and will leave a 5p-sized red, painful lump on uncovered legs. It’ll easily kick up small stones when you’re trimming around gravel beds and generates enough dust in dry conditions to make me appear as if I’ve served a shift down t’pit. I’m exaggerating about that but a shower is definitely in order after using this! The extra 2cm cutting diameter means that the trimmer will do a better job of edging further down the sides of the lawn where grass can grow outwards. I’m not finding the rather flimsy-feeling leaf protector to be much use though and just take a bit of extra care around tree trunks and overhanging plants instead.
I’ve had no issues whatsoever with the twine breaking during use. I’ve always found that the trick with auto-feed systems is to stop completely every 45 seconds or so and allow the trimmer to spool out more line, thereby preventing it from getting shorter and shorter then eventually becoming unclipped from the reel and having to be re-loaded. It’s certainly cut through everything I’ve asked it to – and then some!
I have about 300 linear meters of lawn edge to trim each week during the growing season and (now!) find that this trimmer is well up to the job. It’s a mixture of straight and curved edges against soil beds, patio and gravel, with a couple of tree trunks thrown in too. I’ve included some photos showing the type of edging I do and the results I’ve achieved. This is a good trimmer, especially for lawn edging. It’s more than powerful enough for general domestic use and with a bit of practice, gives excellent results. My only reservation is that plastic joint in the shaft and if that was sturdier and of a better design, the trimmer would be worthy of five stars.
