This is my second flymo like this!! My sister has inherited my old one. Brilliant, reliable machine with a big grass box which means u r not stopping and starting so much. Leaves ur lawn looking amazing!!! Xxxx
Really happy with this product. Came on time and what’s great is the huge grass box. Really saves time on emptying the box. Cuts real smooth and with ease. Really glad I brought this.
Fantastic lawnmower. Easy to fold up and it stands on end ….. Great idea and so convenient for storage. Light weight in use, easy to adjust cutting height and the grass box fills efficiently.
My grass doesn’t do the stripe thing but the roller would give stripes on a better lawn.
Happy with the purchase
Heat space saving, cuts the grass well. Lightweight and easy to move. Metal blades too.
Small, lightweight and cuts well. Easy to fold and store in garden box. Batteries last plenty long enough to get my 50m2 lawn cut. Grass box a bit flimsy and fiddly but ok.
Pro: Height adjustment is easy and offers 5 settings. Grass box is large. Cutting width is better than my old hover. Folds up quite neatly.
Con: Mains cord is very short. Grass box is flimsy. It is significantly heavier than a hover.
My Bosch mower gave up after years service. Bought another Bosch but was awful and a nightmare to assemble. A bit sceptical as had only ever bought Bosch. But this is a great mower. Took about 10 minutes to pit together and away. I only gave it 4 stars, as it was a bit heavier to push than my last one. But tackled my large gardens no probs.
I paid extra for a lawn mower with two batteries…thinking to use one as a spare. However, this unit requires both batteries to be inserted into the mower to be used…so there is no spare
Metal blade cuts well and good sized box for clippings.
My last flymo packed up after nearly thirty years. This is even better with a large grass box and it cuts right to the edge. Would definitely recommend this for a large garden.
Arrived promptly from Amazon Warehouse. Easy to assemble – picture/written instructions perfectly adequate. Cleverly designed for storage. Drops a star as I’m not convinced about potential longevity, seems a bit flimsy in some areas, but time will tell. As a warehouse deal it made it affordable. On trying to charge the batteries one was u/s; apparently an all-too-common fault with this mower. Amazon offered a paltry refund or send it back. To save the faff of a return I took the refund. Obvious now why it was a returned item – why did Amazon describe it as ‘very good condition with only small cosmetic blemishes’? To their credit, Flymo sent a replacement under warranty in 24 hours. Nice one!
Its lightweight to carry ,but cuts the lawn brilliantly. Easy to change cutting height, only two issues with it the lead is not long enough, an extension cable is needed. Also the grass collection box the plastic is no where as durable as out old flymo that lasted 20 + years !
Having used the Hover Flymo lawnmowers over the years where getting harder to cut the grass as I have got older, there absolutely fine if you keep the grass well cut , but still working full time the grass use to be one of the latter jobs that would get done.
So have gone for the push rotary mower 1.600 W bigger motor one ,and is easy to put together and works a dream cutting even long grass with hight adjustment setting lever .
With no problems what so ever , will make cutting the grass in the future so easy.
Instructions a bit cryptic but manageable for a 60yr old seasoned Ikea self assembler . If not used to flat pack might need some help needed an extension lead to reach the far corners which luckily have. Once assembled pretty straightforward to use . Not cut grass myself for 34yrs ( would describe myself as unfit )and this mower made swift work of it . I did one mix on the highest level 5 then repeated on 4. Grass collected without any sill over and east to empty . Folds to stand for storage with a little adjustment. Overall well pleased for the price . Only negative so far iz that you have to be mindful not to run over the cable but I think that makes il for battery versions that frustratingly run out of power way too soon to finish a job in one go .
I have a petrol mower but this year it didn’t start and I don’t have the funds right now to try and sort it out. So as I got this on the 5 monthly payments, it was easier for me to just get an elec as a back up. It’s was easy to put together. I like the basket. It has an extra bit that stops the grass from falling out. Cuts the grass well. It does the job and I’m very happy with it. Also folds up so it easy to store. Glad I chose this mower.
05/05/23 Update – I contacted FLYMO (with the relevant information) via their website and they have sent a replacement battery free of charge with no quibbles at all.
The assembly instructions are easy to follow. I would definitely recommend this mower.
Well balanced lawnmower, on an even lawn stick to the surface, good cutting edges of the lawn. Quiet with 1600W motor, safe saving stacking position it’s very useful.
After using through half the summer I can say it has been easy to use, collects the grass well, folds up nicely for storage and has been a good purchase.
I was most disappointed to find that the product was delivered with defective batteries (of Chinese manufacture) as they would not take a charge. After some time spent with an electric meter it was found they were totally inert.- but following an approach to Flymo Customer Services I was kindly provided with replacement batteries of Husqvarna (Swedish manufacture) which performed perfectly. Otherwise the lawnmower appears of sound construction, operates well and is good value.
Maybe this particular consignment of lawnmowers should be checked for battery effectiveness.
Ordering and delivery from Amazon was, as usual first class.
Fantastic purchase and much better than the Bosch Mower I had
Very straightforward to assemble, haven’t used it yet, bought it in readiness for the spring
Grass box lifted off and keeping grass from dropping ou
This 38cm mower with a 1600W engine will be suitable for medium sized lawns. It is advertised as a folding model, but the levers to fold the handle down are very stiff. The thickness of the plastic is not convincing, however the weight and maneuverability is good, so is the grass catcher basket.
Lets see whether it will last as long as my previous Bosch mower, 20 years, until the motor bearings go.
I bought this to replace our old hover Flymo which had been very good and which I had had for several years. Some of the reviews mentioned that the grass box was difficult to assemble and this is because of flex in the materials used. I found the best way to assemble it was with the lid on the floor and it didn’t take too long to assemble. the rest of the assembly was quite straight-forward and took little time. As I’m used to a hover mower, I did find it difficult to use a wheeled mower to begin with, once I got used to it, I think it was quicker than the hover!
Used for the first time and found this Flymo perfect for my small garden. Easy to raise/lower the blade and to clean after use. Noise level acceptable. Grass box not used because it was difficult to assemble unlike previous Flymo’s I’ve owned. Worked well without the grass box which is now assembled and ready for use next time grass needs cutting. [Fitting the handles together was not a problem. Printed instructions were useful as diagrams were a little unclear.]
Fairly easy to assemble, cable a little short for garden, and wife finds it heavy, did find that it cuts the lawn very well leaving nice stripes. Was a bit awkward to store away but otherwise pretty good.
I had the size bigger by same manufacturer but it packed in so I got this slightly smaller one. Does the job just as well except having a smaller collection box, but that makes it easier to manoeuvre.
I bought the 1600w, 38cm corded mower and I couldn’t be happier with it. Easy to assemble and store and does an excellent job. The power means it cuts through long, damp areas easily, I no longer have to go back and forth and can instead do a single straight line pass and get an excellent cut. I’ve had no issues with the cutting height adjustment handle – mine locks in place easily. Makes nice stripes even on my imperfect hard-wearing lawn and the large bin collects everything so your shoes don’t turn green.
Overall, I’ve only had it a few weeks but ive already used it several times on different heights and I couldn’t be happier.
Most of the negative reviews seem to be with the cordless version so if you have concerns, buy corded.
UPDATE: It is about 7 months since I originally wrote this review and I’m still just as happy with the mower!
Have now used this to mow the front and back lawns a few times and am pleased with the results. For the price it is great value. It replaces a Flymo 360XC which served me well for many years. The 10-meter cable is too short for my lawns and is permanently attached. So I decided to buy a 25-meter extension reel and can now mow front and back without changing the plug socket which is a plus. The old 360XC had a 15-meter detachable cable with its own reel built into the body of the mower, which is a tidier and more practical solution. The 380R has no facility for wrapping the cable when finished but has a wider 38 cm blade, a more powerful 1600W motor and a slightly bigger grass box (45 litre compared to 40 litre). After the initial cut I have moved from height setting 5 to 2. Have not had any issues with the height setting lever jumping from one setting to another, as reported by other buyers. Not sure the roller adds much value, but it will be a while before my lawns qualify for a striped finish . It folds down neatly and then stands up for easy compact storage. I looked at other similar electric corded mowers, but they were all much dearer without an obvious difference in specification.
Bought to replace our very elderly Pack-a-Mow which we loved. This works on the same principle, folding and stacking to that the mower can be stored upright in a small space.
Now, this mows well but stacks differently and there is slightly more “twiddling of knobs” to pack it up. In addition, whereas the old mower rolled nicely into a sturdy grass box and everything was secured, this one has a light flimsy grass box which hangs precariously from the mower handle to store. The grass box also comes in two pieces which snap together (as long as you have 3 hands). All in all the mower cuts well but is a bit of a faff to put away and I fear that the grass box may have a short life.
After my 20+ year old hover Flymo eventually gave up the ghost I was excited to have the opportunity to buy something new that might cut the lawn a bit better. The old hover Flymo never could cut that close. I suspect that many people, like me, do a load of research looking at all the new mower types and the end up in a decision paralysis of which one is best! You find one you like but then see horrific reviews . In the end I committed to this one and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s solidly built. Yes, the grass bin is a bit flexible (it’s supposed to be) but it is still solid and stays together.
My biggest complaint is that the cut is just too good! I now have twice as many cuttings as I had before! The lawn looks amazing with stripes! And I only have to go over it once rather than twice with the old mower, so mowing is quicker. I’ve not gone to the lowest setting – my lawn’s not ready for that yet!
Storage is really compact. It goes very flat as the grass bin separates. It’s nice and light to carry. The old mower was very bulky with the built-in grass bin.
I wish the old mower had died a bit sooner as this one is so much better!
And if you’re confused by the metal blade option, the basic mower has a metal blade, so I’m not sure why they have this other than as a spare.
Only having a small lawn, wasn’t in need of a big mower to replace the small one that just broke, however this was cheaper than a smaller one I was looking at so decided to go for it. Set up wasn’t too hard, but it wasn’t completely straight forward either. It feels quite sturdy when made and can withstand a bit of throwing around. It’s not very light and can be a little clunky to manoeuvre around, but it’s manageable. The cutting area is greater than on the old machine, so less strides of the lawn needed, and the collection box is very generous so I needed half the emptying of my old machine. It’s not cutting as close to my edges as before (I have fences and grass up to them so no edges I can cut over) due to the wheels, so I’ll definitely need to use the strimmer more. The cable length is good, though I still have to use an extension cable due to where my plugs are in the house. The handle is quite high, higher than my previous. Being 5ft6 it’s ok for me, but can see it being a little tall if you’re shorter than that. Biggest minus for me is the adjustable blade height – I was under the impression this would be easy to use, but it’s not! It’s very stiff and I had to ask a friend to adjust it for me. Maybe it will get easier over time. That adjustment lever also doesn’t feel sturdy and I feel that if anything is going to break that’s the bit that will. Was a good deal for me at 90. Not sure I’d want to pay more.
It’s a decent quality mower.
The mechanism to adjust the height is great.
The mechanism for handles is a bit clinky and there must be a better folding system.
The side comb to bring grass under the blades actually works (I had my doubts beforehand).
Grass box adequate. Overall not too bad.
BUT:
What are flymo thinking they ruined the whole thing by providing such a short cable..compared to my Flymo 330 Hover I now have to move the cable almost every run of the lawn (even with an extension cable). What a pain. I’ll have replace the cable myself with a longer one. For literally less than 1 they could have improved the whole thing. Next time I’ll buy a battery operated mower and not from Flymo.
Was close to three stars but perhaps if your lawn is not massive (mine is 360m2) then perhaps the cable is not an issue.
In use, it is light and easy to handle. I like the either-handed power switch/levers as I can take either hand off the controls to manipulate the cable as I go. The grassbox holds a good amount of clippings and attaches quite securely and easily to the mower. It even has a handy little indicator built-in to show when it is getting full. As mowers go, it is also reasonably quiet (probably as there are no gears etc to generate mechanical noise – the blade is simply bolted onto the motor spindle).
There is a 5-position cutting height adjuster, comprising a single lever which raises/lowers all four wheels by an equal amount. I have seen other reviews saying this won’t stay in any of the higher positions and slips back into position 1 (the lowest) in use. I have had no such issues at all – possibly the mechanism is slightly different on some of the other models (mine is a 34cm corded machine).
Cutting results are fine – there is a roller between the rear wheels which does a passable job of creating “stripes” as you mow if that’s your preference. The mower is easy to clean after use – just a quick brush over underneath to remove any accumulated clippings.
All the above mark it in my book as a good mower, but it has another trick up its sleeve – when you have finished mowing the handles are quickly unlatched, laid flat and then relatched. The whole mower can then be simply stood on end (there is even a stowage hook on the grassbox) so it takes up a very small amount of floorspace in your shed or garage.
Negatives? It would be nice to have a slightly longer mains cable. I haven’t measured it but it’s only just long enough to reach to the far end of our not-very-big lawn. Flymo also claim in their bumf that it can easily be wheeled around in the stowed “small footprint” configuration – in my experience this is only partially true – you can indeed wheel it around but the grassbox will fall off its clever stowage hook if you do.
Overall I fully recommend this mower (34cm corded model) for anyone with small-ish lawns.
