Absolutely love these. I have very fine hair and they are brilliant for me. Yes they are really pricey, but they were a gift from my children. I get two 10 minute uses out of one charge. The battery is the only let down. If you have thick long hair I wouldn’t advise these. Great for holidays, and the little carry case is fantastic. I bought a silicone plate protector separately which I also use and I love them.
These are a complete game changer. I always hated camping just because of being unable to use my hair straighteners, but these actually work – whether I want to curl or straighten. I can just about curl my full head on one charge. They charge up easily off the leisure battery.
I contemplated getting these for months. I wanted them for camping trips, festivals and for touch ups at work (my hair goes frizzy in damp weather). I did’nt want to pay full price and be disappointed having read some of the reviews. I have naturally wavy, shoulder length, thick hair which I wear poker straight or in twists. These work brilliantly if I blow dry my hair first. I’m not sure how many uses I would get from a single charge as I have recharged them after each use but they certainly last long enough for one go.
Great – very lightweight and portable. Handy to use anywhere. Nice design. Prefer the look and use of this to my corded GHDs.
Cons – runs out of battery after one use, so needs constant charging. You can’t use it while charging.
Summary – Needs to have much longer battery life, then it would be a really great 5 star product.
Love these take them to work / away for quick touch ups. Can do a full style but will need recharging after
As good as mains but more flexible no exercises for a bad hair day now
Bought these as an alternative to my plug in ghd s, as I was attending festivals with no electric hook up! Charged before I went and was able to recharge using battery pack also purchased on Amazon. They work great and straightened my hair with ease. I know they are on the pricey side but you pay for what you get. The ghd brand
Love these, can take out for the day & instantly use to keep hair straight. Must keep charged but love them
Great for travelling- small, light & compact. Having thin rubbish hair these are great. If you have lots of or lovely thick hair they probably wouldn’t be for you as the charged time is fairly short. But for me hair waved or straightened in 10 mins. Love them.
I will use this as a travel straightener and to take places to freshen up my hair if it gets humid and fluffy in summer. I only knocked one star off value because as other reviewers said you don’t get much use time for the amount of time charging. But as it’s not my main straighteners that’s not too bad really. Overall I’m happy ghd have finally made travel straighteners without wire as they’re a good brand.
Very happy, easy to use.plenty of charge time for my mid length bob.
The GHD Unplugged stylers are fundamentally excellent straighteners, as all GHD straighteners are. That is not something I’d dispute at all, but I will compare them to my wired Platinum+ set, as in the photos.
Firstly you can obviously walk around with the Unplugged set which is the main bonus. They take twice as long to heat up as the wired ones though and they are smaller in length and width on the plate, so they take longer to work. I’m not convinced they do as good a job as the Platinum+ set – it took longer and I felt my hair was more staticky afterwards. I prefer the noises the Unplugged set makes as the Platinum+ sounds like a cheap toy.
It took a while to charge the Unplugged set but they lasted for ages before needing a recharge. They are a bit heavier, due to the battery, which is a little annoying for usage but they are not so heavy as to make this matter a lot to anyone but those with arm weakness.
They come in a really nice box and have a great travel pouch to go in – I wasn’t sure if it was obviously heat proof but it survived so it must be! You also get a USB C cable and a plug which has a higher voltage. (My husband tells me this allows for faster charging!)
I do wish that they had a silicon cap to hold the tongs together like other GHD straighteners have but I was able to reuse one on it.
All in all I do prefer my wired straighteners but these are certainly more compact and convenient for travel, and they could go in a larger handbag if you really needed to make sure your hair was A1 at all times. I wouldn’t put the wired ones in a handbag because they would be far too big and a mess of cables, so these definitely win on “neatness”.
The straighteners arrived well packaged and included a charging lead (type C at both ends), a plug, a storage case, instructions, and of course the straightners. They arrived with some charge so I used them until they went flat then fully charged them to see how long they’d last. You can charge them in the case (handy) & this took about 2 hours. To use, turn on & when heated up (they beep) about 90 seconds later, they’re ready to use. The heat isn’t adjustable but was fine for my short-medium length thick hair. After use, turn off & pop straight back into the storage bag. I was bit worried initially as the charging cable is stored in here too, but it seemed fine so long as it’s tucked into its section & fully behind the heat proof material.
I got 2 1/2 uses (maybe 13 mins) out of the fully charged straighteners before they were completely flat (I turned them on 4 times but turned off once as soon as they were ready without using, and the 4th time on ie the 3rd in use, they ran out pretty soon after hearing up). I guess the battery life depends how long you use them for each time as the heating up when you turn them on obviously uses the battery too.
The plates are quite narrow (perfect for my use) but straightened my hair with ease, leaving it styled and smoothed.
They are ideal for when a cable in use isn’t an option / far from a mirror etc, and for travelling (mediumly weighty to carry but they don’t feel it in use as they’re well balanced). They do need to be charged fairly often though so you will need access to a socket etc (don’t forget the plug unless you’ll be plugging into eg a laptop etc). Great that they can be stored away hot, immediately after use.
Great quality, do a fantastic job, handy, portable, but a bit of a commitment to remember to charge between uses (can’t be used whilst charging).
Background:
In a previous career I was a hairdresser, seeing lots of clients 7 days a week I always worked with the best brand products available – GHD being among those. GHD have always been my hair styler product of choice for the best results despite expense for the last 20 years. Therefore unsurprisingly I could not wait to try these in exchange for an honest review and they did not disappoint!
In the box:
-GHD unplugged styler – the long awaited ON THE GO straightener!
-USB-C lead for charging on the go
-plug wall adapter
-instructions
– heatproof carry case
Out the box: charge for 2hrs before use
Pros:
-unplugged! For touching up hair styles en route
-great for fine hair
-easy to hold
-easy to use
-non-static even heat
-small and portable, fit in my shoulder bag with ease
-heat proof carry case
– 20 mins use with a full charge
– 100% replacement for gas hair straighteners/curlers
– they function just as good as my thin “plugged” GHDs
-switch them on and they work right away, a few flashes and a beep before they’re ready to use – as always with GHD designs
-carry case is totally effective at being heat proof
Cons:
-these do not replace the need for your “plugged” GHDs but this is not a product fault it’s simply not what this product was designed for
-they are a little on the heavy side to carry around for nights out
– no clip to stop the ceramic plates banging together in the carry case in your bag (the reason for 4*)
-price 299 – which I feel is rather expensive but it is a high end product
Verdict: Before you buy this luxury product you need to consider what you’re buying them for – if it’s for a replacement for your “plugged” GHDs then these won’t be for you. If you want some GHDs that are light weight for touching your hair up on the go – after that long meeting or journey or amidst a night out – or weekend get away then these are totally for you. I would absolutely recommend these straighteners for the purpose in which they’re marketed – for ON THE GO use!
The main idea of GHD Unplugged is you can take them anywhere. You can do your hair in the train, in the office or even in a pub. I was sceptical about how portable these really are, after all you can fit a lot in a handbag, especially if the handbag is big!
Price wise these will set you back 299 at time of writing, so they’re not cheap, being approx double the cost of the latest corded models.
I decided to compare them them directly with their corded predecessors.
Size wise they are significantly more compact without compromising on plate size, which is only mm shorter and narrower.
The handle is larger than before, which I did struggle with initially, but after a couple of uses started to feel more natural.
It’s amazing the freedom you have when you’re not restricted by a cord. I’m not yet there with curling using GHD’s- I’m not sure if it’s the length or thickness of my hair, or just inexperience. However, I did manage one curl so they must be easier to use!
Results wise these are what you’d expect- styled hair in minutes!
The biggest negative point for these is the charging. They take two hours to charge for just 20 minutes use- which, for straightening is fine for a couple of uses but curling for me could be a bit risky! The other negative here is you can’t use them whilst charging- so even if you’re using these as home styler you need to stop and recharge if you’re mid styling.
They conveniently beep when hot enough (like corded ones) and give you a series of beeps when low- 2 beeps is low and a further one beep signified they have run out of charge. There is also a LED indicator to match the charge level. Note they come with enough charge for about 5 mins styling, so charging before first use is recommended.
To summarise,
Positive:
* Lightweight and compact
* Can be used anywhere
* No cord getting in the way
* Expected GHD quality- fast and long lasting styling
Negative points:
* Short usage time- only 20 mins
* Cannot use whilst charging
* 2 hour full charging time
* Expensive when compared with corded models
Overall, for me the price tag does put me off as I don’t really tend to need to do my hair on the move, but I can definitely see they would be worthwhile for some!
So, I love GHD hair products and have ised their straighteners for years – but nothing as expensive as this product.
It works great as a straightener to take away on special occasions where you want to fix your hair without carrying a full size straightener with you. Would be perfect for holidays, weddings etc.
I love the design of the straightener, very sleek and feels of great quality. Its comes with a carry pouch. I just wish it had a silicone protector to use on the end of the straightener once you are done like my full size ones have as they can prevent burns to skin and furniture/carpet if the straightener were to fall whilst turned off for cooling.
In terms of function, there is no heat settings, you just turn it on, wait for the beep and flashing to stop that lets you know it is ready for use. It straightened my wavy hair very quickly, in about 2 good strokes I got poker straight hair.
There is a display that shows you how much battery life is left, whilst I was using it, the bar went from 2 to 1 bars remaining and within 5 minutes of charging was back upto 2 bars. You cannot use the product whilst it is charging. It comes with charging adaptor and cable (type c – type c ) but easily replaceable as most of us have such cables around the home.
It is a beautifully packaged product and will come in very handy. I will use it on holidays, weekends away and can easily fit into a handbag or just left in your car glove compartment to use on nights out or to freshen up after work. I would be delighted to receive this as a gift.
The con of this item is that it needs a full charge to enable 20 minutes of use and it takes a fee hours to fully charge. As I am writing this it has been on charge for 10 minutes and still on 2/4 bars so a full charge will take near an hour. I love the I have had the opportunity to review this product but would I pay 299not sure yet. But I must say, for a small product, it leaves quick and lasting results.
I’m between 4 and 5 stars rating for this product. But I rather remove 1 star just because:
– huge price tag
– battery lasts only for 15-20 minutes from one charge
– no temperature settings to control it ourselves.
– takes a bit longer time to achieve straight hair style, due to lower temperature, usually wife uses 200 or 210
– lack of locking mechanism to keep both heat plates closed like in other straightener wife has.
The other features which makes me to give it 4 strong stars are:
– beautiful, sleek design
– heats up very quickly
– lightweight
– portable, inside lovely leather storage pouch which is also heat proof
– its small and doesnt take much space, perfect for travelling, hair styling on the go
– it comes with not only type C two sided charging wire but also UK plug for type C wire (not usb type A).
– it has luxurious look and feels high quality when using (wife straightened her hair with it today)
– it doesnt heats up crazily hot, just enough to use it safely without burning hair or risk of burning fingers. Wife said that after the use, she didnt feel like hair ends were burned so that’s a good thing.
I’m sure in the near future we will see on the market upgraded versions with longer battery life or temperature settings. This product can be used once or max twice in one charge so it’s good enough but for the price tag, this should be higher tech at that point.
Yes, it looks amazing, feels fantastic when using, much safer than corded, hotter hair stylers. Its very easy to use. The sound notifications helps to know when it’s ready to use or when battery is very low (light on, flashing, and levels of the light). Styler came beautifully presented, could make perfect gift for people who expect more from life.
Personally, I wouldnt pay 300 for hair styler as can do with much cheaper one. By the way, this is first ever product from GHD brand we have so it’s really nice to experience something above the standards.
