Estimated battery life based on testing using a median Pixel user battery usage profile across a mix of talk, data, standby and use of other features. Average battery life during testing was approximately 29 hours. Battery life depends upon many factors and usage of certain features will decrease battery life. Upgraded from a Moterola, and the processing speeds are a night and day difference. Phone looks trendy and google provides useful software tools which I recommend you look up a youtube video to fully utilise them.
Love my Pixel 6a, takes really good photos and not as pricey as buying new. As a Samsung user, took me a couple of days to get used to its settings but very happy with it. Would buy a refurb Pixel phone again.
Amazing phone for the money. Plays all the latest games. Having Google integrated with it, just makes it easier. Android updates for a few years too unlike some other brands that get outdated in two years.
Cons:
Battery life. Something’s draining the battery. It’s a common fault with most of the pixel line. I’m charging the phone twice a day. My old OnePlus 5 used to last over a day on one charge. Also charging speed is slow compared to my old phone that had the fast charge.
The camera. It takes nice HDR images that look good for landscape photography, holiday snaps etc. But it overprocesses shots that you want to just look normal. Example would be, when I photograph my dog. She looks weird and totally unnatural. I have to load up the raw photo and use that, but even that has something done to it. Again my old OnePlus 5 took more natural photos with true looking colours.
firstly I will write some of the pros according to me.
Pro:
1. Camera quality
2. Build quality
3. Size (maybe con for few)
4. Speakers are really good.
Cons:
1. The most annoying thing about this phone is, we cannot turn off shutter sound in camera.
2. 2nd Most is using firefox browser in pixel phone, whenever I use firefox, after few minutes phone gets stuck and automatically reboots.(which works absolutely fine in a very less costly phone)
3. sometimes fingerprint sensor doesnot recognize finger print.
4. Overpriced.
– Fast and well optimised device that results in a snappy experience
– Excellent image processing from Google that makes the most out of the cameras on the device. Clarity, detail, sharpness, and exposure control are all brilliant when taking photos. Video is also excellent.
– Good battery life
– Waterproof
– Speakers have great sound quality
– Screen is nice
Cons:
– That fingerprint really is terrible from a huge tech company like Google. It is actually quite quick when it unlocks upon successful recognition, but there is no point in that if it is not reliable. All’s it takes is either some slight wetness, dryness, wrinkling, or dirt on your finger to give the scanner a really hard time recognising your fingerprint. I own a Samsung galaxy A33 (2022) and a Xiaomi Poco F3 (2021), and they can reliably recognise my fingerprint regardless of any slight change to the finger that I listed just before.
– Like others have mentioned, it does indeed get rather warm when charging or doing something somewhat intensive. This was during usage in winter as well.
– 8MP for a front facing camera is a bit of joke for the price they sell the phone for. I definitely notice the loss of detail and clarity when using the camera. It’s only thanks to Google’s image processing that it is somewhat acceptable.
– Slow charging speed.
Setting it up was really simple, the simplest ever in fact. Connect your phones together and it does it for you BUT (a big but) it wanted to backup photos to Google Drive. That’s fine but you only get 15gb storage and that includes email storage if you use Gmail. It was quickly used up meaning emails couldn’t be sent until reduced (or pay to get additions storage). Didn’t find it that easy to delete files to free up space. Not sure it’s necessarily a pixel 6a thing, its likely because it’s Google.
Should point out, it was Google drive filled up, the phone storage was absolutely fine.
Phone wise it’s very good. Smooth, fast, clear display, good camera…….. here comes another but, there’s no back button! Had to Google how to go back a page without closing the page/app (swipe the page and an arrow appears) . Most will quickly get used to it, but for some technophobe or people of an age less use to technology, it’s a hurdle and a learning curve.
I’ll soon be looking for a new phone for myself and I’m impressed enough with the good points of the 6a that I’ll probably go for a pixel 6 (slightly bigger, better screen and camera). Plus you’re getting a high end phone for a fraction of the price of a Samsung or iPhone.
Sound
I had a pixel 3a and the sound was great but the sound quality on the 6a is not as good. I fixed it by downloading an equalizer app. Maybe we can get an equaliser in the next update.
Camera
The Pixel 6a is almost the same size as the 3a but the screen takes up the whole of the device, so much so that the forward facing camera is at the to of the screen obscuring part of the display. May be an issue for some.
Aside from that a good phone
Display
The screen is certainly sharp enough, but perhaps a little lacking in punch, it can seem dim. If adaptive brightness is enabled, as it is by default out of the box, you’ll typically be looking at brightness in the 30% – 40% range, obviously to conserve battery power, which does not much impress.
A fairly low-grade of gorilla glass is used for the screen so I use a protector, but touch accuracy, responsiveness, and haptic feedback, are all fine.
Battery & Charging
If you routinely exhaust your existing phone’s battery in the course of a day then possibly the Pixel 6A is not for you because it does not have huge battery capacity. But for a light user, as I am, battery life should not be a problem.
I charged the phone to 100% at midnight and left it powered ON overnight. The following day I used it for about 40 minutes navigation, a couple of dozen photos, some web browsing, this and that. At 9.30 in the evening the charge showed as 47%. I connected a power pack, and by 10.00 the charge was 75%, reaching 92% at 10:30. So the battery capacity is not awesome and the charge rate does not dazzle, but honestly? It’s OK for me, and while your milage will most certainly vary, unless you’re a seriously heavy user making and receiving calls all day then you should be fine.
Performance
The phone is zippy enough, I’ve yet to notice any lagging, Apple won’t be fretting, but in its price band the 6A has to count as a powerhouse. I’ve not found it gets noticeably warm, but I’m not a phone gamer.
Camera
You’ll already know the 6A does not have telephoto, and I guess you won’t be buying if that’s a big issue for you. In the vast majority of scenarios the two lens camera is fine for me, producing pretty good shots. My attached photo of pink geraniums was taken on a dull afternoon with 5x zoom.
Fingerprint Unlock
No unlocking method, I’m quite sure, is as plain reliable as Apple’s Face ID, and I’ve never come across a fingerprint recognition system remotely as effective. But you don’t get a new iPhone at the Pixel 6A’s price, sad to say. Initially my 6A finger sensor was plain unreliable to the point it was almost useless, but since I installed the QPR Beta 1 update it has worked very well. Note: You have to register with the Android Beta Program to be offered Beta updates, but the fixes should be rolled out in a public release of Android 13.
My method of maximising fingerprint recognition reliability is:
– [ ] Ideally, don’t use a thumb or index finger, those digits are our most vulnerable to nicks and abrasions etc in daily use. I use my right middle finger, which works fine for me because I usually hold a phone in my left hand and poke at it with my right rather than use it one-handed.
– [ ] Use all the fingerprint enrolment slots, the Pixel 6A has only four, for your chosen finger. This gives the recognition algorithm a vastly greater chance of recognising the print because it has a larger data set to compare with.
Here I should say I have never experienced the widely-reported Pixel 6A problem of the phone unlocking for any old random fingerprint.
Overall
With the fingerprint recognition issue seemingly resolved I am now happy to recommend the Pixel 6A. At the price I don’t think you can buy better.
