Excellent portable WiFi router for my CamperVan, can work remotely or surf internet with a data sim.
I think this M1 is better than the M2 which I also have as the M1 doesn’t have the annoying touch screen which makes the device difficult to shut down and save battery.
It works (in my caravan very well) but is expensive as it doesn’t give me a better boost to my exisisting internet connection (at home) which is very poor.
I got this for my caravan and had nothing but issues with the battery life signal etc, just like the other comments. I bought an external aerial, google UC-DIRHGMI-2X5G-05L-PM. The signal issues improved where by it worked even in remote areas.
The battery was a different issue, I removed the memory card which I suspect drained the battery, this improved the life but it still the battery got HOT HOT HOT.
So I now leave it sat on the screen and the battery in the air. No more issues, no more the device telling me it needs a cooling period as it got a bit hot (yes this did happen) when on charge and in use. Works as one would expect.
I bought this for the aerial connection as I knew I would have reception issues and got lucky on the second attempt at ordering an aerial.
Should have mentioned I required adapter leads for the aerial. Search for: EWC533-1GE
Hope this helps others in the same predicame
Got this for my Motorhome, worked really well all over France Spain and Portugal.not as good around rural Ireland
This router, when plugged into the booster on my van roof seems to be much more reliable than my old Huawei mifi router. I do recommend it.
However I’m not sure I would recommend ordering this item through Amazon, as initially they sent me the wrong item (or maybe it was stolen/replaced by someone before it got to me?) and I am being kept waiting for my 300 refund while they ‘investigate’. Next time I won’t order via such an expensive item through them. Very frustrating.
I was looking for a mobile hotspot. I was burning through my data allocation on my mobile phone very quickly. My network provider recommended a mobile hotspot and unlimited data sim fo 35 per month. The hotspot lasted less than three months and went technical (another word for didn’t work as advertised). After initially refusing to replace or refund I started looking for an alternative. Say hello NETGEAR! Within 2 hours after receiving it, I had upgraded the security, changed the device id and login password, hooked it up and was surfing the web like a pro. I use this when I’m out and about, I down graded my mobile data allowance, saving me 30 per month and I stream movies at home. This device will pay for itself in less than 8 months.
Works perfectly. Like others I have read in these reviews I had problems connecting to the internet via ethernet but was able to overcome this by connecting to the mains via the supplied power supply.
I was a bit confused with researching mobile Sim routers, as I guess some purchasers are not as savvy as others.
(It is a bit like shopping for water containers with a tap. There is a lot of negative feedback from those, with complaints of ” the tap is useless”which you should read: they didn’t loosen the lid to allow air in. User error, or faulty item ?
But, I ‘m delighted to say, I have a 3 x improvement, both in Upload and Downloud, using the same SIM card, same static location, than I had before. And I have done about 30 tests, at different times, before and after.
I bought this from Amazon direct, but from Warehouse, used like new. ( it was like new, still sealed).
Although it seems a huge outlay, if it is important to you in getting connected with better results , I suggest Buy one! ( you can always return it if it doesn’t live up to your expectations! That’s Amazon, a great return policy.
I will add, remember to set up your SIM card to get that communicating with the router. You will find that in the software, under Advanced Setting, Cellular. Click Add. Then you need the info of your SIM provider, APN etc it may be already on your phone if you look hard enough, and just add it to the list.
Highly recommended from me!
The battery lasts about 8 hours, but you can run it with the battery removed, as long as you have a 12v power supply.
And I will add; I wasn’t paid to say this, and the item I paid full price for.
After getting the settings right, this little box gave us a 4g signal in an area where we had previously had none at all.
I got this to be a back up for data access on the go, I live in Prestwick in Ayrshire, all the networks CLAIM to have 4G but in reality, non really deliver its always hit n miss, I bought Smarty unlimited data sim at 20, they use “the 3′ network it shows 4G on my device right at the mast but you can see clearly from the speed tests in NO WAY do you get 4G speeds, in London you might, in Manchester you might, in Liverpool you might but rest of UK esp here on Scotland you wont get much at all above the odd 50 mb download so never expect 1gb, its not going to happen. Now we tested several devices connected same time, it was ok to start depending on network, but 4 or more caused lag and often will drop off network totally. The kit itself is small, neat and smart, easy to set up BUT you will really need to delve deep into the best sim or sims to get depending on your network area coverage in my case I bought a Smarty Sim at 20 unlimited data only on The Three network, the same deal on Three actual network web site is 34. EE were around 29 for just 70mb, so it depends on what you think you need data wise and to be fair 20 for unlimited on Smarty was best deal in the UK I can find.
Charge time seems fine at around 2 hrs for full charge and around 8 hrs data time, depending on network access and numbrr of devices connected. A pont to note is that from time to time you do check uour connection as for some odd reason it does disconnect for no reason. Other wise its a neat bit of kit that does work and connects – but do your homework on best network(s) will work for your area.
Fantastic Product, easy to set up at home with no issues, Netgear product data sheets really useful and once connected streamed a live football match with no loss of picture, no delays and no issues. Highly recommended.
Battery if you do not use it with 1 or 2 bar signal too much will last 24 hours.
If you are in a zone with poor signal that time can half.
I managed to get 60mbps speeds on EE in city areas and 2-10mbps on areas with 1 bar signal.
The modem has many useful features but is not perfect.
I own few other models and this one seems to perform best from 4G+ portable class.
After alot of research, I decided to bite the bullet and buy the MR1100 for our motorhome. This has easily been the best decision I have made in a while, we now have fast unlimited WiFi for all our devices with added security and a comprehensive app for complete control. If we go on a vacation without the motorhome our router easily fits in your pocket, making it truly portable. An excellent purchase well worth the money. Go on treat yourself you won’t be disappointed!!!
At first I left a 1 star review because it took so long to get working (a few days) – I think this may have been due to the sim card either not being inserted properly – I literally moved it to the left a tiny bit – then it worked! or it is possible that it wasn’t fully activated yet. Anyway what should have been quite simple was very frustrating. Now that it’s working I feel al is forgiven because it is so simple and convenient. If it had worked easily from the start it would have got 5 stars – the stress I went through has lowered it to 4 though. Maybe I was just unlucky at first.
I use this for our Campervan for work. I’ve previously just tethered my phone to my computer but have stayed in places with minimal or very slow signal. I am delighted at the internet speed this produces for both my equipment but also my wife’s and the way it gets a better reception. My tip to other users is to use a different SIM card provider to their phone (to increase availability of mobile reception) and to place this device as high as possible in the Campervan. I use a payg SIM card from EE which for 50 which gives 120gb over a 12 month period but depends on your use. The speed makes you want to use it even if your mobile does have a decent signal.
I’m sure a number of technically-minded people will point out devices as good/cheaperhowever I was looking for a portable high-speed device to enable connectivity of non-SIM devices (e.g. iPad, laptop) to enable remote-working and streaming of video-content in the car (including as an alternative to the cars own inbuilt hot-spot option) and other non-office / home locations. So far this has lived up to expectations. I have been able to access and download large files remotely with speed and run a Teams call (while also connecting a second device) without lag or interruption from the lower-ground level of a London hotel. This has proved to be a by far more reliable and faster option than the publicly available wifi options (as well as being more secure). It is small, so is easily carried in a bag, or left in the armrest storage of the car, with very good battery life. The small screen is helpful in displaying signal strength, battery strength, number of devices connected as well as the device code to allow other authorised users (e.g. family / colleagues) / devices to connect. Setup was also pretty simple. Overall very pleased.
Got this one to go full-time broadband replacement at home.
Plugged in EE simcard, set-up took about 3 minutes and it is up and flying. On average 4 bars gives us 50 mbps on Wednesday afternoon (I guess this is when network got throttled at its hardest), so will let it play for week or two and see how it is, if not – I will add external antennas, not a big deal.
Solid unit, easy to setup, plenty of settings inside and nice design.
Update after 2 weeks of use.
I went for external antenna, – getting ~120 mbps depending on weather. Because we use it to connect around 10 devices it was overheating a bit, so after quick Google for solution we took the battery out and sorted more powerful power source for it. End of the story, it does the job behind the computer screen and never been seen again, uptime 1 week and counting.
Increase speed on mobile from 1.6 to 20mb in pretty poor signal area connected to external aerial and more in good signal area, i have had 60mb without aerial IE portable and do believe more to be had. can be Little tricky to set up but anyone could do it and once set up very simple you just connect as with any other WI-FI connection. Even has Ethernet connection. Portable as well and can plug in without using battery which is handy. Overall would recommend this product. Only downside it is a little pricey for what it is and haven’t rated tech support as not used as ye
Firstly, Build quality and feel in the hand are very good. The M1 is a nice looking piece of equipment.
Secondly, Ease of set up is very good. The manual is adequate and the steps can be followed with relative ease.
Thirdly and most importantly, Performance. Early days to have any real information on this aspect of the router really. I am running my the router with an O2 Data Only sim supplied by “Govivo” (Excellent Service) and with a Poynting Antenna, I had good results in a previously very intermittent data download area.
In summary, nice quality, so far good performance But quite a high price tag (260) when you compare with some other routers on the market bearing in mind it is a 4G only route
This is one honest review from a guy who travels a lot and always ends up in the worst dead spots with work ARMY ! . I needed to put an end to no signal with any smart phone, after watching several videos online I began to notice a pattern with the devices people chose, and they all recommended The Netgear Nighthawk M1. So I went ahead and purchased one just last week. I was sceptical as I couldn’t even get 4G on my phone without going outside 20- 30 meters or so , and then it was intermittent. So it arrived and I plugged it in and downloaded the Netgear app and followed the instructions and booooooom I got 4G in my room ! Then it sed 4G+ ? I did a quick speed test on my phone and it was far better than my broadband at home !!!!!! I know this is a bit of a read but hopefully Iv helped someone with there issues of no signal dead spot, I have taken this home and tested it against my internet provider which was around 65MBS NETGEAR – 100MBS !! I have now cancelled my broadband ! Thank you Netgear I don’t know how you don it but your devices are epic and I could talk to my family and steam movies in a dead spot for over 3 months deployment!!!!
I work in IT remotely in the Scottish Highlands with local BT broadband delivering insufficient speeds for both download and (increasingly important for zoom/teams calls) upload. Hence the need for a 4G router.
This unit, in conjunction with a Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0002 directional antenna is making the most of the two bar signal from the nearest mast on the EE network. Typical download speed is 70 mbs but I’ve seen 123 recently! Upload is consistent at about 10mbs. My work colleagues in different cities/towns in the UK can’t believe it when I screenshare the results of a speedtest (and neither can I).
Like some other reviewers it did seem to take a lot more fiddling (and frustration) to setup than I’d expect. It really ought to just be a case of popping in the SIM and away you go, but for some reason it wasn’t straightforward. My top tip, if you’ve just got yourself a new SIM is to put it in your phone and do the initial activation & top up there FIRST to ensure the SIM is fully working. Only once you’re 100% sure that the SIM is working should you then proceed to use that SIM in this device. It’s only a hunch but I think that may have been the cause of some of my initial setup trauma.
The unit itself feels really solid & well made. Being battery powered means it will keep working for a number of hours (I think the claim is 7?) without mains power- handy if used at home with possible power cuts. The app that comes with it (or the website used for config) has all of the features you’d expect.
I use the unit as effectively our full time home router and have it plugged into the mains at all times, without the battery in place. (The battery is fully charged and just left to one side in case of power cuts – pop it in and within a couple of minutes the router is back up again). Batteries are not meant to have power flowing through them constantly and some users have reported the battery getting too hot (causing the device to shut down) and even becoming misshapen/leaking under prolonged constant charging. So if you’re planning on leaving it on all the time, I’d strongly suggest leaving out the battery.
It’s important to realise that the supplied USB charger does NOT provide sufficient power to charge the unit if it is also under heavy active use at the same time. This can lead to the device powering off randomly and I suspect is the cause of some of the dissatisfaction from some users. Simply purchase a decent charger (for about 15) to solve that problem. I bought a “Quick Charge 3.0, Anker 18W 3Amp USB Wall Charger (Quick Charge 2.0 Compatible) Powerport+ 1” device from Amazon.
So, ensure you use a SIM that’s already setup, buy a decent charger, and don’t leave the battery in (if you’re leaving it on constantly as a home router) and my experience has been that it’s a cracking little device and worth the extra money over cheaper devices.
I purchased this about three weeks ago as an upgrade to my current mobile hotspot. I chose this one as I already have a Nighthawk router in the house and am very pleased with it.
I found it very easy to set up and get it running. The software upgrade was very simple to do. VERY impressed with the speeds achieved and with its connectivity. At the moment I use it in the car, but when allowed I hope to use it for holidays both here and abroad. No complaints about the functionality of the unit.
There are two annoying things that take a star off.
The first is the battery capacity. I find that with just my phone connected I can only get about 6 hours before it needs charging. I feel that for a supposedly high end bit of kit, and being advertised as lasting all day, this is not acceptable.
The other thing is charging. Using the supplied cable and charger it never achieves full charge when operating. If I turn it off and charge the battery I do get a full charge, but sometimes it switches itself on and Doesn’t fully charge. Also the battery gets very warm.
In conclusion, the MR1100 is a really nice unit sadly let down by battery issues. If those were fixed five stars across the board.
After a house move this device hold load of 35+ different devices (computers, phones, tablets, smart devices). Generally planned to use as temporary/backup internet line for working from home, after house move (for no more than 2 – 3 days), but due to lockdown have to wait engineer visit for more than 1 month to get broadband installation. So use it as a primary internet line for a noticeable period of time. Do not use it as a router, only as a modem with pfSense router / Linksys Velop. Used with external antenna (Poynting 4G-XPOL-A0001 Cross Polarised 4G Omni LTE Antenna). An external antenna is more than recommended if modem stays indoor only as it increases the signal level and total speed. Speed varies during the day from 75Mbps down to 8Mbps on busy time (with external antenna) signal level 2-3 bars and around 10 – 2Mbps without – signal level 1 bar or no bars, so if your primary router support traffic management it really helps split traffic from important to less important during a busy time. The device handles around 30-60 Gb daily. Not always best speed, during the busy time we have to get an agreement which going to use the line as a primary person / who is secondary (kids almost always last) and adjust policies on the router. The device holding load 24/7 for a month for the whole household. If you do not have options, with its own limits can be used as a primary internet line. Consider checking cell map to find best or nearest cell mast. For signal level boost It may be beneficial if you get own mast for external antenna (not tested).
Update: I got 2.5-meter mast for antenna and signal level and speed improved. So I got now 90 – 320Mbps with (3-4 bars Fair or Good signal levels). The web interface on modem provides numeric value/signal level, that you can use to adjust / point antenna close to cell direction. I got an omnidirectional antenna, and my cell not very close to the house and I don’t get a direct view to it. With the directional antenna, you can get better results (not tested, but I believe so). Used it in daily camping outside the city. Kind of nice experience to take the internet with you. Very happy with the purchase.
I purchased this purely for its size and ability to accept Ethernet, I have had no issues with signal or setup which took minutes, battery lasts a 12 hour shift of constant use but I normally keep it plugged in, If you don’t require Ethernet then I can’t help but think a much cheaper option is available, my colleague used a smaller Huawei hotspot that was 30 and I never saw a difference in speed, I have also had no issues with the app for using it which gives a lot of features, if you need a high end router with many options and features then this one is up there, it could be cheaper but it’s a known brand and gives many features for in-depth network control, for context I use it in my converted sleeper van with my desktop computer for gaming online, all in all, could be cheaper but had no issues in 2 months of constant use.
