About Us
“What do you think about going into die casting?”
It was September 1943 when this proposition was brought to Ryobi founder Yutaka Urakami.
The proposal came from the manager of Mitsubishi Electric’s Fukuyama Works in Hiroshima . Yutaka, then operating a small trading company, was no technician and, with no knowledge of die casting, had to ask “What’s die casting?” The manager explained and Yutaka immediately set to work reading about the process, learning about it from scratch.
After this momentous conversation and careful consideration, his reply to the manager was decisive: “I’ll do it.” This decision came just one week after Yutaka heard the term “die casting” for the very first time.

I bought this 5 amp battery it was a bit pricey but you get what you pay for it’s good quality build and it seems very sturdy I would recommend this to other people.
This doesn’t come with a battery or a charger but I already had some Ryobi tools so this made sense. It’s a brilliant chainsaw.
I recently had a tree felled but wanted to cut it up into logs for my wood burner.
As you can see, it made light work of it.
Very impressed, capable of cutting back all of the trees in our orchard. Battery life wasn’t a problem. Takes a bit of time to get though really thick branches. Well worth the money. Not having to mess around with petrol is a bonus too.
asy to use just what I needed. Works very well.
Very easy to use, and a suprising amount of power, have used this a lot. You do need more than one 4ah battery for continous use, but thats expected.
Instructions are worthless, fitting chain needs some trial and error but excellent when done right.
Easy to assemble. Very powerful for battery powered. Perfect for small to medium jobs. great for firewood.
I already have a petrol saw for work on thick logs.
The only poor reviews on this seem to be from people who thought they were buying the power of a petrol saw, but driven by battery.
I have a lot of wood that is about as thick as your thigh, or less, from trimming trees, and occasionally thicker.
This is perfect for the job of trimming the trees and then sawing into ca. 16″ lengths.
It cuts half the speed of my petrol saw, and that’s not a bad thing if you’re working in tight quarters or at awkward angles.
Working single handed, I can easily get about an hour and a half work out of an original Ryobi 4Ah battery.
Not sawing all the time, of course, but positioning for cutting, throwing into wheelbarrow etc.
Lighter to use than a petrol saw, but don’t forget helmet, boots and chaps! It’ll still cut your leg off, even it is battery.
Assembly and maintenance is very easy a well. Just check the tension every half hour of cutting, and check the saw oil level. It keeps well lubricated.
Get a file (and handle) for it, and a quick swipe every hour or so at the angle indicated in the chain, and it’ll cut quicker.
Replacement chains and bars very easy to get, and cheap as well, but *do* learn to sharpen your chain!
Happy and safe sawing!
Well this is far better than I expected it to be. I wouldn’t want to use it for heavy work. But for lightish stuff up to about 6″ it’s excellent.
For cutting up bits & bobs it really works a treat, obviously it starts easily (Unlike one of my big petrol ones) & so quiet you can use it on a Sunday without p155ing all the neighbours off.
We have 3 batteries at the moment, if you only have 1 then budget to buy more.
We’ve been buying into the 1+ now for years & nothing disappoints.
I opened the box and my first impression was it looks and feels a bit cheap and nasty but I charged the battery poped it all together and went outdoors and had a quick cut , it’s not as good as petrol but I am very impressed, it cut through a log 10inch round log without any problems, battery will last about 30 minutes so it’s best to have two ,very impressed I will recommend to any light use users
Sturdy, lightweight, easy to manoeuvre. Saves a lot of time around the garden, and will be a godsend when I need to fuel my woodburner during this winter’s blackouts!
Easy to put together. Only quibble was chain arrived kinked and took some time to straighten, it was not damaged in any way. I would wear gloves though when fitting as the blades are quite sharp. Instructions are helpful, but I found it easier to watch a video on YouTube. You do get oil but only the bare minimum, so I would purchase extra if you are going to use it a lot. It does leak oil, mostly from the chain, so I would check the oil level every time before use. I would also spray the chain with wd40 for wood sap. Keep the chain lock and cover on when not in use and you are good to. Always wear proper clothing, gloves and eye protection.
for how often i have to use a chainsaw does the job fine and i do not miss the 2 stroke chansaws
I have had this a while, it has lasted quite a long time without discharging power, I only use it every now and again for small tasks. Bought for use with a circular saw, drill driver and other riobi products if I buy more of the one plus range.
I am a great lover of Ryobi tools and this is no exception. Easy to use and cuts fairly large logs. Highly recommended
Battery life is surprisingly good. You don’t expect the power of a petrol saw, but this works well on 6″ logs.
Light weight but a real heavy weight and works very well easy to handle cuts well, does what it says on the box
Makes tree and shrub pruning a delight. No petrol, no smell, no idling noise, no armwrenching to start, no flooding, no stalling, much lighter in weight, cleaner and your hands don’t end up stinking of 2-stroke. Suggest spare batteries – i get through 2 fully charged in an hour’s clearing.
The chainsaw cuts very well for my needs , it has gone through some heavy thick branches which i dident think it would, battery life is good , would like to see it come with a bag for storage and carrying, all together a great bit of ki
I had a petrol chainsaw years ago and sold it because I was scared of it. This little gem does everything I need to do (in a garden with over 100 trees) – of course it has to be used with care (protective chaps, jacket, helmet and visor) – but you know that, don’t you? I feel confident in using this saw, and you probably will too, if you use common sense. I reckon a charge only lasts for about thirty cuts (not forty as stated) and the recharge from flat will take about four hours.
I bought this primarily to pollard a few trees. The cost of the unit was much less than a visit by a tree surgeon. I was delighted at how light the saw is and yet powerful and robust. I completed the work all in the same day and even cut the branches up for firewood. Hopefully it will last for many years and can be used for many different jobs around the garden.
I did read that it is important not to let the oil reserve run low on such saws. It seems that the chain and guide will wear out within minutes if dry. I suggest that a litre bottle of “bar and chain oil” be ordered at the same time as the unit, because it comes with only a tiny bottle – it can be obtained from Amazon at little cost.
I do not usually bother with reviews, I expect equipment to perform as described. In this case, however I am making an exception. I have previously owned a mains electric chain saw and a petrol versiion. Both were unsatisfactory in different ways. The mains one gave up and was fiddly with a wire attached. The petrol was difficult to start and eventually wouldn’t. So I opted for this battery-powered item. I was impressed at how straightforward and easy to assemble it was. I was dubious about a battery being powerful enough, but I need not have worried. It easily gave half an hour of work and I suspect would have done over an hour. OK I wasn’t cutting down a forest, but recent storms had brought down a tree in my garden and this tool did the job of cutting it up without any problem. I am impressed and would recommend this saw for any domestic use.
Chain presented a problem at first. But worked it out finally
Absolutely amazing quality and I knew the ryobi saws had great reviews and I was torn between this and a 40v saw, but this is honestly more than enough. Super easy to setup, and within minutes I was bucking logs I have had stored. With one battery (5.0ah) I got 43 cuts on Cypress logs that were ranging 8″-12″ diameter before the battery was flat. At no point did it feel like it was struggling, I had also cut through a well seasoned 8″ oak log I have and very similar speed of cut, just a touch slower as expected being very hard wood in comparison.
My buck saw will only be used for pruning a branch or two now if small, as this is amazingly quick. Highly recommend.
Only thing I would say that as a package could be improved is to include a bottle of bar/chain oil as you obviously need it, but it’s so cheap anyway.
I only buy Ryobi now where power tools are concerned. Delivery is always smooth and if you can’t work things out from the instructions (highly unlikely, as they are clear), there are loads of YouTube videos of ryobi users un-boxing and using the products etc. Chainsaws are always dangerous, so please make sure to have the appropriate kit and make sure you know what you are doing. Having said all that, assembly was easy – I’m not mechanically minded by nature – and this is a really valuable tool in managing a woodland. It makes short work of coppicing small trees. For big trees, I get the tree surgeons in, so I can’t comment on how it would perform for bigger tasks. The reservoir for chain / bar oil is easy to access and the comfort of having a battery operated saw is that you don’t have to be faffing about with fuels and engine oil. It’s a powerful piece of kit and I’d say the strain it puts on the battery charge is fair and more than acceptable.
I bought this to clear the end of our garden that’s very overgrown. So far, so good. It coped with taking down this holly tree which is about 20-25cm in diameter and logged it up ok, albeit slower than a petrol saw. I did a smaller tree yesterday and it clears rhododendron and stuff easily. The only criticism I have is that when it stalls, you have to take the battery out and put it back to reset it it, which is a fairly minor niggle.
For small work around the garden, it’s easy to use and copes well.
Brilliant,
I bought a non gen 6ah last about 18months ago firstly I had to re-solder the contact onto the battery then and from first getting it the charge didn’t seem to last as long as I thought it would.
Then when I got the genuine ryobi battery the charge last at least 4x longer the power output for such as sanders is definitely more.. When I i used it on my belt sander you could here the difference and it never stopped and started like it did on the nongen one
In conclusion don’t buy non gen. There cheap, but so inferior, and only really good for drills (not hammer)
I bought two 5.0Ah batteries to bolster up power for my ryobi collection which is ever growing. They are best used in the more power draining tools like the recip saw and garage vac cleaner, as these both drain smaller batteries really quickly. They are very well made and if they last half as long as my other 1.5Ah, 2.5Ah and 4.0Ah batteries, I will be a happy man. They are definitely overpriced for the UK market, but then what isn’t? They are half this price in the states and if you want a 9.0Ah version you have to shell out 170 sheets. Not a chance!
Great, but. I have around 10 Ryobi + 1 tools but will probably stop buying for one reason. The batteries are way too expensive. If you compare the cost against the Likes of Makita,Dewalt and Milwaukee Ryobi are by far the most expensive. They are seldom on offer and rarely available in twin packs. I have purchased a couple of third party batteries but these do not have anywhere near the run time of a genuine Ryobi, and when using them with Brushless tools the tool frequently stops for no apparent reason. Was looking at the latest variant, the 9AH but refuse to pay 160 + for a single battery. Am now switching to Makita.
I’ve got a couple of 5Ah batteries and have ordered a couple more. I’ve tried the cheaper alternatives and they don’t work in all tools – pay the extra, get something that works with your Ryobi One+ range properly.
You’ll see plenty of reviews on the different tools that putting in a 5Ah battery “makes it more powerful” – it doesn’t do this, in the same way as putting a bigger fuel tank in a car doesn’t change the motor, it just lets it run for longer.
The 5Ah batteries are quite hefty so for more delicate tools/jobs you might want to cut the weight with a lighter unit and recharge more frequently.
This is great and last a while! i had 2x 1.5Ah batteries that were fine for odd jobs around the house with my power tools (drill etc) then i picked up some outdoor power tools, specifically the leaf blower… and 3-5 mins was not ueful. SO i picked this up and it lasted long enough for me to finish the garden. also using it on my power tools is fine but this obviously adds weight so if using with a drill consider that.
The only downside (and there really is only 1) is its so damn pricey! but once you pick one up, then you only really need the tool from there on in and plug this and go.
Been wanting a chainsaw for a while now and use a lot of ego I tools as seem to suit my needs
The chainsaw is light enough to carry any distance which is good
I used it with a 4ah battery and it cut well and for a long enough time
Cut two trees down that was about 6″at base in diameter and then cut into log sizes for my burner, did approx 60 cuts before felt need to Change battery
Cut was clean and consistent
Shown a nice finish in my log store in garden
Very easy to use
Just let the saw do the work and did not have much of a kick when I used it
Relatively quiet and stops quick which is always good
Only issue I felt was the instructions where not as clear as I would like for assembly of cutting arm
But a simple google to ryobi has a video and roof probably 1minute to complete
Did seem to spray oils slightly which I assume is normal for lubricant of cutting blade
So don’t use on over a surface that’ has a finish, like a stone patio for example
After use strip back down to clean the oil soaked sawdust inside housing for storage
Took about 5 minutes to clean
Certainly would recommend
I have a good selection of ryobi tools so batteries are not an issue and this thing needs good batteries. I did a hours chopping logs of around 4″ to 6″ and it was great creating little waste thanks to the thin blade. The power was adequate and as long as you let the saw do the work and don’t expect petrol power levels or try and push it through the wood you will be please with the results. For those complaining it doesn’t have a brake, yours is broken! Mine will not work without the brake in the correct position so no chance of starting it by accident. Replacement blades are available on amazon. I like ryobi tools but have never purchased ryobi chains, blades etc. Never had any issues with the after market stuff.
Great bit of kit. Would recommend.
I have a number of Ryobi One tools, and they are generally good but some do struggle to cope to the level of their corded or petrol driven equivalents. I was a bit dubious about this chainsaw before purchase as a couple of the reviews said that it would struggle with branches and trees much bigger than 4 inches in diameter, and I thought I might be making a mistake buying it only to end up with a toy chainsaw not much use for anything. I’m happy to say that this is not the case. I’ve been using this to to cut down weed trees on my land, some with trunks of 1ft (30inches in diameter) and its been zipping through them with no trouble (OK a little technique had to be exercised with angle and number of cuts, but it wasn’t difficult). When I consider what I would have paid for a tree surgeon this great little tool has paid for itself already. Battery life seems pretty reasonable too…hard to quantify casually…. but I’d say you could cut down 6-10 trees of 6-12 inch diameter on a single 4.0AH charged battery. Its not a pro forestry saw but for light work don’t hesitate to buy it in my view
Supplier: I bought this via Amazon from a French supplier as it was 15 cheaper than UK suppliers. It was delivered in less than 1 week. I have bought from this supplier before and always had good service.
Batteries: I have 10 Ryobi batteries, up to 5Ah so using the saw for a prolonged period is not an issue. I buy the batteries in Home Depot when I visit the USA, much cheaper than in UK even at the current exchange rate. The 5AHr battery lasts about 45mins of use.
Use: This is NOT a Stihl petrol chain saw so do not expect it to cut fast as the chain runs at 10m/min which is about half the speed of a petrol saw but it cuts fine through dry and wet logs with a SHARP chain. I use a Granberg 12v chain sharpener. You can buy them in the UK but much cheaper in USA. It automatically sets the cutter angle and depth and the height of the raker teeth.
Safety: Obviously, use face guard, ear defenders, safety boots, chainsaw gloves and preferably chaps and hard hat as you would with more powerful petrol saws. Saying that, this is safer to use for a novice and reduces the risk of kick back. As stated above the chain must be kept sharp as using force to cut increases the risk of kick back.
